Tourism in India’s heart: MP
November 6, 2018 In-the-Issue , STATES
Steered by the theme ‘Business. Leisure. Knowledge. Life.’, the fifth edition of Madhya Pradesh Travel Mart 2018 attracted some 75 foreign and 125 Indian buyers, 70 sellers, and media from around the world.
Inder Raj Ahluwalia
The Madhya Pradesh Travel Mart 2018 brought two aspects into sharp focus — the sustained hard work of the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board (MPTB) and the private sector has yielded positive results, and secondly, this is just the beginning of a march to a strong tourism progression.
Hari Ranjan Rao , Managing Director, MPTB put things into perspective by declaring, “Madhya Pradesh takes tourism seriously. Quick decisions are taken because of a special dedicated cell that acts as a ‘tourism cabinet’.”
Rao further stated that the state has all the tourist attractions visitors could wish for. A third of the state being under forest cover makes wildlife in general, and tigers in particular, a huge attraction. “There are nine national parks, 25 wildlife sanctuaries and six tiger parks. The UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Khajuraho, Sanchi and Bhimbekhta are also gaining in popularity, as is religious tourism,” he informed.
The increased participation of Madhya Pradesh in overseas roadshows has received an overwhelming response
The increased participation of Madhya Pradesh in overseas roadshows has received good response. And a large number of brands are coming to the state. As part of their ‘opening up’, the state has a policy of giving heritage properties to private players.
According to Bhavana Walimbe , Additional MD, MPTB, several new tourism products have been introduced. “City walks are organised across the state to enlighten participants about local history, heritage and cuisine. Tourism quiz programmes are conducted to educate school children. ‘Cycle safaris’ and ‘heritage runs’ have been started. Several large water bodies have been opened up for tourism. A ‘museum of music’ is also in the offing. The state is gaining ground as a film shooting locale. We have also taken a lead in promoting adventure tourism and are ready to host the high-potential AdventureNext from December 10-12, 2018,” he revealed.
Capt Swadesh Kumar , President, Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI), stated that AdventureNext would provide a big boost to the state and get international adventure tour operators coming to India for the first time. Apart from the Indian adventure segment, the state would also benefit from the event.
PP Khanna , President, Association of Domestic Tour Operators of India (ADTOI), stated that there were now daily additions to the group of travel players, and events like the MP Travel Mart provided an opportunity to meet everyone. He felt that domestic tourism has to be further promoted in India, and MP Tourism deserves credit for this. The state is now among the top states in promoting tourism into India. Khanna further advocated the concept of holding domestic travel marts.
All indications suggest that Madhya Pradesh is making strong progression in the field of tourism, and the future appears bright.

Foreigners prefer to visit national parks in MP, say travel agencies
The third MP Travel Mart was inaugurated by chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan at Hotel Ashoka Lake View on Saturday. As many as 70 international buyers, including individuals and organisations, are participating in the event.
Several delegates and representatives of Indian Association of Tour Operators, Travel Agents Association of India, Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Association and Adventure Tour Operators Association and travel enthusiasts from across the world are attending the mart.
“There are visitors from Poland, Zimbabwe, Spain, South Africa, the UK and South-East Asia. This is the third edition of the mart and we observe that people and organisations working towards any kind of tourism are interested in knowing what Madhya Pradesh has to offer,” said Ritu Makhija, a PR professional.
The mart features 50 sellers from MP, and 175 domestic buyers are also participating in the event.
The mart features international brands such as Marriott, Lalit etc. It also has information kiosks by several private and state tourism jungle resorts.
Madhya Pradesh is well known abroad for its national parks.
“Over half of the enquiries that we get from foreign nationals are about wildlife. Recently, when the film on Mowgli was about to release, we had planned an itinerary of seven days in the national parks of Madhya Pradesh and that was a huge hit among foreigners,” said Manik Kaur of an international travel agency.
Manisha, a sale coordinator of Tiger Resorts, says, “Foreigners mainly come to explore the wildlife and greenery. Most of them prefer staying in jungle resorts. Most of them want to indulge in safaris and experience the real taste of wildlife, rather than staying in a far away hotel of an international repute and coming to national parks in the morning and leaving by the evening.”
Faiza, marketing head, Rare India said the trend of people staying in boutique hotel is on the rise in India, including in Madhya Pradesh.
Foreign nationals’ fondness for handloom products
The Madhya Pradesh Handloom kiosk sold products worth Rs 30,000 in less than two hours of the mart’s opening. The kiosk, when visited, was abuzz with delegates from Japan and Spain.
“The response is incredible. Foreign women enquiring about dupattas and buying them is a big surprise. They value and are very fond of Indian wear. Foreigners have got sarees and kurtas and even curtains with bagh prints from here,” says Manisha Jain, sales person, Madhya Pradesh Handloom and Handicrafts Corporation.

Madhya Pradesh Travel Mart 2017
I recently had the opportunity to participate in Madhya Pradesh Travel Mart , the 4th annual such event, in Bhopal, India, the regional capital of Madhya Pradesh.
This is a two-day event, bringing travel agents in to learn more about regional and national destination management companies, resort properties, and other travel services. 50 Foreign Tour Operators visited the event to research and connect with potential partners in Madhya Pradesh, a large state in central India, home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites and six Tiger Reserves. One-third of the state is forest. My mission was to discover the best of what Madhya Pradesh had to offer and to see the magnificent tiger in the wild.
Minister of Tourism, Mr. Surendra Patwa spoke to the media at the event. MP Tourism had made good progress in the last year, winning several awards, in fact, but the mission was to build upon that. “If satisfaction is there, then progress will stop,” said Patwa. Tiger populations continue to decline in the world — except here in India. The successful implementation of tiger reserves and the subsequent tourist demand to come see them has actually led to population growth among the tigers.
Secretary of Tourism, Mr. Hari Ranjan Rao held a lengthy talk and Q&A with journalists. Pench Tiger Reserve has over 50 tigers, while Kanha Tiger Reserve may have as many as 100 adults, plus the uncounted cubs. But Bandhavgarh National Park has one of the highest densities of tigers in the world. The authorities rolled out a list of wildlife rules, restricting park access – allowing tours only along the roads of 20% of a park, thus preserving the bulk of the land for the animals to avoid any stress of visitors – and limiting the numbers of tour vehicles in a day as well.
Officials credit the success of tiger watching to better park management, buffer zones around each reserve, and a drastic drop in poaching. At this point the biggest challenge to tigers is a need for greater space. Tigers need wider territories or the biggest threat becomes other tigers defending their own territory.
Another area of progress for Madhya Pradesh is the preservation of historical palaces. Several of these have been restored and repurposed as hotels, while many more are in line to also be so developed. While on a Bhopal city walking tour, organized by Madhya Pradesh Tourism, we saw two such palaces only in the beginning stages of renovation. In fact, my stay that weekend was at heritage-hotel Jehan Numa Palace , just steps from the Travel Mart event.
This combination of opening new lands to national parks and bringing to market historical palaces as inns will keep the positive momentum so far established by the tourism authority. While management of the tourists in the form of well thought out rules and limitations for park visits will maintain the safety of the wildlife population going forward.
After the event, I joined a weeklong tour of four tiger reserves on a long circuitous drive through beautiful Madhya Pradesh. Watch here for more posts and photo galleries from my travels in Madhya Pradesh .

ETW Staff – Mumbai
The third edition of Madhya Pradesh Travel Mart, to be held from October 14-16, 2016 in capital city Bhopal, will have a special focus on promoting domestic and inbound tourism into the state to reaffirm its position as a preferred global tourist destination. Alongside, Madhya Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation (MPSTDC) also aims to market Madhya Pradesh as a year-round destination.
Hari Ranjan Rao, managing director, Madhya Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation (MPSTDC), commented, “MP Tourism will also be launching some of its own activities along with the private companies. The policy will also include development of way side amenities in association with private companies. The state has incredible potential in terms of heritage properties with Madhavgarh Fort, Govindgarh Fort and Fort Orchha at its disposal.”
MP Travel Mart promises to provide an opportunity to tap into this market by bringing a forum of effective one-to-one business meetings. MP Travel Mart aims to create a platform that will offer the perfect environment for like-minded people from the travel trade to interact and do business together. The goal is to ensure each participant, whether its the exhibitor, buyer or visitor, gets value for their investment and time spent.
The state has also launched a new tourism policy on September 20, 2016, that include some changes in the rules and aid involvement of private players. A special tourism cabinet has been formed which will entirely focus on promoting tourism in the state. The new forest recreational rules will allow development in good quality forest, which was not accessible earlier. This forest area does not fall under wildlife sanctuaries or wildlife parks. The forest department has pointed out 15-16 areas that can be transformed around Indira Sagar Dam, Indore etc. A permit will allow private companies to buy land and start adventure activities. MP tourism will also be launching some of its own activities along with the private companies. The policy also includes development of way side amenities in association with private companies.
Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh was adjudged the best state for comprehensive development of tourism, followed by Gujarat and Karnataka respectively, at the National Tourism Awards for the year 2014-2015. Additionally, Monuments of Amarkantak in Madhya Pradesh were declared the best maintained and disable-friendly monument.

TMC MP Saket Gokhale writes to Sebi for investigation into alleged stock market manipulation through exit polls 2024
The tmc leader has asked sebi to investigate if there were entities that booked profits through selling on 3rd june and made even more profits on 4th june by short selling and whether any of these entities have direct or indirect links with the bjp or with pollsters like axis myindia..
Calls for regulatory investigation into alleged stock market manipulation through exit polls have got louder. Rajya Sabha MP Saket Gokhale has written to Securities & Exchange Board of India (SEBI) demanding an investigation into the exit polls, specifically by Axis MyIndia.
In his letter to Sebi Chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch, Gokhale alleged that Axis MyIndia massively inflated the seat numbers for BJP-NDA in its exit polls, which subsequently triggered a rally in the Indian stock market. However, a substantial discrepancy emerged between the actual election results and the exit poll predictions, resulting in a significant stock market crash the following day.
Gokhale is a Member of Parliament in the upper house from All India Trinamool Congress (TMC).

“I've written to SEBI demanding an investigation into the exit polls (specifically Axis MyIndia) which massively inflated the seat numbers for BJP-NDA. In Bengal, they predicted 26-31 seats for BJP which actually got just 12 seats. That's an exaggeration of a whooping 116-158%. This is way beyond any standard margin of error," Gokhale wrote in a post on X.
On the back of exit polls, stock markets spiked massively on Monday. And after the results, the stock market crashed to an unprecedented level on Tuesday, he noted.
The TMC leader has asked SEBI to investigate if there were entities that booked profits through selling on 3rd June and made even more profits on 4th June by short selling. He has also asked the regulator to investigate whether any of these entities have direct or indirect links with the BJP or with pollsters like Axis MyIndia.
Also Read: Lok Sabha Elections Results 2024: Modi failed to equal THIS Nehru record as he sets for 3rd term as PM
“The exit polls were clearly manipulated to rally the stock market. Lakhs of crores of investors' money was later wiped off yesterday after the markets crashed. There must be an investigation to determine if pollsters like Axis MyIndia intentionally inflated the exit polls for the BJP. This is important because Axis MyIndia also had BJP as a client," Gokhale said.
He further added that the investigation must also determine whether the BJP and any poll agencies have made crores by manipulating the stock markets through exit polls.
The India Today-Axis MyIndia poll predicted 361- 401 seats for the BJP-led NDA. However, the actual final results show the BJP-led NDA leading/winning on 292 seats, a discrepancy of 23 - 37%. Moreover, the same poll also predicted BJP to bag 26-31 seats in West Bengal.
However, the election results 2024 show the BJP winning only 12 seats in the state, a discrepancy of a whopping 116 - 158%.
Also Read: Election Results 2024: Satta Bazaar trumps ‘smart’ pollsters, says Harsh Goenka, ‘believe in people who…’
“A margin of error can be expected in the range of even 10-15% but a discrepancy of 116-158% is unfathomable. Moreover, it has been noticed that such glaring discrepancy between predictions and results was seen not only in West Bengal but also in several other states," Gokhale’s letter to Sebi said.
Driven by these exit poll predictions, the Indian stock market saw a sharp rally on Monday, 3rd June, as the Sensex and Nifty 50 both soared over 3% each. Subsequently, on the next day i.e. election results day on June 4, the stock markets witnessed a massive crash and the Sensex and Nifty 50 tanked nearly 6% each.
“A spike of almost 3.5% on Monday after exit polls followed just the next day with a crash of about 5.8% after announcement of election results is unnatural and is an indication of how inflated and off-the-mark the exit polls were. Again, of specific concern here is the most popular & most watched India Today - Axis MyIndia exit poll which was found to have been completely incorrect and inflated in favor of the BJP-led NDA," the Rajya Sabha MP’s letter read.

Moreover, Gokhale also pointed out that the Axis MyIndia was hired by BHP to conduct election surveys for the party and alleged a clear conflict of interest on part of the agency to be working for the BJP while also participating in exit polls without a clear and unequivocal disclosure of a glaring conflict of interest.
Investors made massive profits on 03.06.2024 after the markets rose on the back of exit poll results. However, on 04.06.2024, investors have suffered losses of over ₹ 31 lakh crore, he said.
In the letter, Gohkhale requested Sebi to initiate an urgent enquiry focused on 3 crucial aspects, namely:
(a) Whether there was intentional inflation of exit poll numbers by India Today Axis Mylndia
(b) Whether the entities that booked profits on 3rd June are linked to the BJP, India Today, or Axis My India and
(c) Whether the same entities indulged in any short selling on 4th June when the stock markets crashed on announcement of election results.
Earlier, Srinivas BV, the National President of the Indian Youth Congress, also alleged a conspiracy behind the exit polls 2024. He shared a series of videos from interviews with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah during the Lok Sabha elections, in which they predicted a significant stock market rally on June 4.
Srinivas claimed that the exit polls were fabricated and suggested a vast conspiracy, calling for an investigation by the Sebi.
Veteran investor Basant Maheshwari echoed these concerns, alleging that Indian stock market investors were misled by the exit polls and questioned who should be held accountable.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.
Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.
Belfry and Neighbouring Churches
Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.
To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.
Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.
Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.
Tsaritsa's Chambers
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.
At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.
Palace of Tsar Alexis
The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
