Concert Review: Muse Makes a Statement in Portland

Lights, lasers, strobes, a confetti shower and one giant stage-sized masked face rotating back and forth looking eerily at the crowd. Let’s see, what else, what else? Oh yes. Fire. Lots of fire.

All in a night’s work for Muse as the English rockers brought their Will of the People Tour to the Moda Center on Sunday in Portland. The band played 22 songs with videos in between and a couple of shorter song cuts, in a nearly two-hour long set featuring all the stage theatrics that define the Muse live show.

Though the visual element always accompanies the band, this time it seemed as if Muse let the music do more of the talking, or at least playing. It was all business, too, for the official trio of singer and guitarist Matt Bellamy, bassist Chris Wolstenhome and drummer Dominic Howard who brought along a fourth musician to contribute on keyboards, some extra drums and guitar when Bellamy was doing other things. The stage located on one end of the arena in amphitheater style with a long catwalk down the middle. Bellamy yelled out infrequent “thanks yous,” introduced one song and the longest conversation of the evening when he recognized more people showed up than the last time they came through on the Drones Tour.

Indeed, Muse pretty much sold-out the arena from top-to-bottom. Ten years ago for the 2 nd Law Tour , the 300 level was curtained off. Muse entered the stage wearing full apocalyptic-like masks plowing right into the title track off the new album. A rather poignant, yet somewhat subtle messaging on the band’s feelings about what occurred during the coronavirus lockdowns , short dystopian videos occasionally played in between songs serving as the introduction to the next and supplementary visuals for the evening’s theme.

Muse played seven off Will of the People , interspersed with their popular hits and a couple of deeper cuts. At times very loud (I pulled out an earplug just to hear and quickly popped it back in), Muse found their cadence from the start and really never let up except for the video segments allowing them to change attire or put the masks back on.

The short track “Interlude” accompanied “Hysteria” just as it does on 2004’s Absolution, followed by “ Psycho ” and “Bliss” an excellent selection off 2001’s Origin of Symmetry, the band’s second album. The heavy “Won’t Stand Down” flooded in the decibels then one of the videos took your eyes off the stage so the giant masked figure would emerge when the band returned to the stage for “Compliance.” That guy stuck around for much of the show.

Bellamy’s vocals drove the slower “Thought Contagion” and the contemplative “Verona.” Howard gave his bandmates a bit of a break as he walked out to the secondary platform to lead the instrumental “The 2 nd Law: Isolated Systems.” Bellamy took his turn in the spotlight by playing a slide guitar solo while sitting on the shoulder of the giant masked figure for his take on “The Dark Side” and later playing “Behold, The Glove” off his solo album Cryosleep where he played much of the 80s like keyboard sounds off an electronic gadget, behold a glove!, attached to his arm. While very Muse-y, this resulted in the only hiccup of the evening as his soaring guitar was mostly sidelined for “Uprising” and the start of “Starlight.” Both songs failed to measure up to their potential greatness.

But not so with the Depeche Mode sounding “Undisclosed Desires,” and “You Make me Feel Like It’s Halloween” which bested the album version. Even the scales song, what I call “Plug In Baby” (another off their sophomore album) because the primary riff sounds like practice scales had some magic.  Bellamy let the crowd sing a little too much on “Madness” but the crescendo that culminates midway always delivers. Wolstenhome brought out the double-neck bass for that one instead of the digital version he used last time.  A quick encore included “Kill or Be Killed” off their latest and the popular “Knights of Cydonia” started with Wolstenhome playing a harmonica.

Muse played well and when factoring in the rhythm and beats of the lights and other effects, extraordinarily well. Perhaps this explains the dialed-in nature of their craft to stay on point with the timing of everything.

they have some great songs, but I’ve never dived in to their albums. Their concert sounds like a blast.

Muse Announce 2023 North American Tour With Evanescence

Muse  bring their "Will of the People Tour" to stateside fans when the English rock band visits venues in the U.S. and Canada for a North American tour in early 2023. Evanescence  provide support on the bill.

Will of the People is Muse's latest album. The futuristically anthemic rockers' ninth studio effort, it emerged last month. It contains the singles "Won't Stand Down," "Compliance," "Kill or Be Killed," "You Make Me Feel Like It's Halloween" and the title track.

Muse singer  Matt Bellamy said that  Slipknot influenced the album, thanks to his son's love of the metal band .

Muse Announce Winter 2023 Tour With Evanescence

Muse  are going through a bit of a heavy phase. Earlier this summer, the prog-rock Brits covered  part of Slipknot's "Duality" at a big festival, and there was a song on their new album called "Kill or Be Killed" that actually has a double-bass section and even a stray death growl. Early next year, they'll be coming across the pond to tour North America in support of their new record Will of the People , and they'll be bringing along gothic hard-rock vets,  Evanescence , for the ride. 

The tour begins February 25th in Chicago and will hit many cities throughout the U.S. and in Canada throughout the next couple months, wrapping up April 20th in Salt Lake City. Muse and Evanescence are pretty different bands in a lot of ways, but there's definitely enough crossover between their fanbases to make the pairing work, and surely both acts will benefit from each other's audiences getting acquainted with one another.

"We always like to use the modern technology in our shows, the latest video screens or light shows, lasers, whatever is out there," said Bellamy. "Drones are obviously an interesting thing to try to bring into the live show so we're going to try and do that.

Students will have the opportunity to work in both a large ensemble(Jazz Big Band) and small combos playing jazz, latin jazz, and rock jazz styles. Student are actively involved in organizing their own arrangements of songs in their small combo groups assisted by instructors (who are professional jazz players). Jazz Improvisation is taught using “Jazz Vocabulary” that can be easily read and then implemented into the students own solos. Students will have the opportunity to work with instructors who play Jazz Professionally around the Portland area.  On our final day of camp, students will perform a concert for family and friends. There are no auditions. Students will be placed in classes according to their age and experience. Our Summer Jazz Camp Staff:

Camp Coordinator Bryant Allard is a local Portland Jazz and Salsa trumpeter/educator and the Director of M.U.S.E. Instrumental Programs Bryant moved to Portland in 1994 where he currently resides and continues to play with some of the best world class, local musicians. His Jazz and Latin compositions are recorded on several CD’s which have received great reviews. You can catch Bryant around town performing with his own groups and with Nick Gefroh’s Salsa Band Pa’Lante in many of the local clubs, restaurants, and summer festivals. His most recent CD project, recorded August 2023 with his group The Powerhouse Jazz Quintet, is now steaming online and on his   YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/@PowerhouseJazzQuintet-xb6wt . 

Allan Mair has been in music education for over 30 years. He was a teacher and administrator in the Reynolds school district and is now retired but continues to work as an instructor and adjudicator. He is also a professional woodwind player in Portland playing many styles of music including Jazz and Salsa. He performs regularly with the Art Abrams  Jazz “Swing Machine” Big Band as well as the latin Band, Conjunto Alegre. He has been a great addition to our staff and we are so glad to have him working with our students.

Catarina New Martin

With a Master’s degree in Music education and further education at New School of Jazz, N.Y. and University of Southern California, Catarina has worked as a Music teacher in both Sweden & USA from Kindergarten up to college students. Catarina has been teaching for over 25 years and has been on the M.U.S.E. staff for 11 years teaching band as well as piano classes. She also is a free lance jazz saxophonist and a leader of her own Brazilian Band. She also co-leads the latin jazz group “Picante” with Director Bryant Allard. She’s with young students and is very encouraging. “To see a child’s excitement for playing and learning music is the best reward a teacher can get”  says Catarina.

“My daughter always wanted to learn how to improvise and take solos but never had the opportunity before now. She didn’t feel forced into having to take solos but wanted to because of the unique way you taught them using Mr. Allards Jazz Vocabulary Method. The small combos were a great opportunity that they don’t usually get at school. Thank you for inspiring her.”    Jim Salsman

We offer classes in Band, and in some schools Piano, and Guitar/Ukulele. You’ll find us in Portland, the Bay Area, and Los Angeles. We feel learning an instrument is complimentary to a child’s academic studies including discipline, time management, teamwork, organizational skills, and perseverance and commitment. From New York-style boiled bagels to Montreal-inspired wood-fired ones, there’s lots of great bagels in southern Maine and several shops have the accolades to back that up.

In 2023, Bon Appetit named bagels from Rose Foods and Rover Bagel among the best in the country.

Two years before that,  Food & Wine Magazine put Rover, Forage and Scratch Baking Co. on its list of best bagels in the U.S.

Dutchman’s opened in 2022 as a pop-up housed at Nomad pizza in Brunswick’s Fort Andross building. It’s since become a permanent fixture there and uses the pizzeria’s wood-fired ovens to bake its bagels. The hand-shaped, honey-boiled bagels come in plain, roasted garlic, poppy and a bagel-of-the-day flavor.

FORAGE MARKET

Making bagels at Forage Market involves a two-day aging process. The bagels are naturally leavened with wild yeast starter and baked next to a hardwood fire. MISTER BAGEL

There are 10 or so Mister Bagel locations in Maine, including South Portland and Falmouth. It all began with the Portland location, which was the first bagel shop to open in Maine. The late Rick Hartglass started Mister Bagel in 1977, and it is still a family business. Music fans will appreciate the breakfast sandwich menu, which includes The David Bowie (bacon, egg and American cheese), the Jimmy Buffett (egg with roast beef and cheddar) and The Lady Gaga (avocado, salt and pepper, with or without egg).

At Rose Foods, the menu varies depending on the day, but there are usually six to eight flavors available. For example, should you pop in on a Friday, you’ll find a poppy and onion bialy (a cousin of the bagel that is not boiled). SCRATCH BAKING CO.

You haven’t lived until you’ve experienced the line of devoted fans waiting for Scratch Baking Co. to open, especially on weekend mornings. Along with the popular Maine sea salt, plain and other everyday flavors, Scratch has a daily special bagel. There’s honeyed rosemary on Wednesday and jalapeno cheddar on Thursday. Scratch is also famous, at least to locals, for its P-Cheese spread. It’s a pimento cheese recipe made with cheddar, mayo, roasted red peppers and seasoning and was passed down to co-owner and head baker Allison Reid by her grandmother, Mern.

THE MAINE BAGEL

The Maine Bagel is a drive-thru with several breakfast and other kinds of sandwiches available. With a bagel list that features egg and bialy among the standards, the family-owned spot is the perfect place to stop on your way to Pine Point Beach. The Maine Bagel really shines with a dozen kinds of cream cheese spreads, including raisin-walnut, lox, strawberry, cranberry-nut and bacon-chive.

THE WORKS CAFE

The Works Cafe is an institution on the edge of the Portland’s Old Port. It opened in 1990 as Bagel Works before it changed its name in 2002. The original shop in this regional chain opened in Manchester, Vermont, in 1988, and there are 11 locations around New England, though just the one in Maine. Gone are the ’90s-era banana-walnut bagels and cold pizza cream cheese, but The Works Cafe is still a reliable place to grab a salt, multigrain or cinnamon raisin bagel, among others. The menu also has bowls, sandwiches and smoothies.
