Make the Most of Late Harvest Season in the New England States

Ah, November in New England... you want an honest opinion, right?  It's not the best month.

Leaves have faded and fallen in all but the southern and coastal parts of the region, leaving a stark landscape of skeletal trees. It's cold but usually not cold enough to ski New England's slopes until  maybe  the end of the month. It can be damp and horribly dreary. New Englanders head into November thankful to gain an hour when they turn the clocks back to Eastern Standard Time at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday of the month... but they lament how early darkness falls for the remainder of the year.

But wait! November  does  have some redeeming qualities. After all, it's the month when Americans feast and give thanks. Thanksgiving traditions originated in New England with the Pilgrims in 1621, although some, like making mincemeat , traveled here from across the Atlantic. Throughout the region, the harvest is celebrated, and restaurant menus are loaded with comfort foods. Newport, Rhode Island—one of New England's best cities for dining—even hosts Restaurant Week  in November, and the deals make meals even more pleasurable.

As with any in-between season, November is also a time for lodging bargains in New England. Give yourselves the early holiday gift of a romantic getaway at one of these  10 New England B&Bs that have fireplaces in every room , and you won't mind November's chill at all.

New England Weather in November

Average November Temperatures (Low / High):

Hartford, CT: 35º / 52º Fahrenheit (2º / 11º Celsius) Providence, RI: 36º / 53º Fahrenheit (2º / 12º Celsius) Boston, MA: 38º / 52º Fahrenheit (3º / 11º Celsius) Hyannis, MA: 37º / 53º Fahrenheit (3º / 12º Celsius) Burlington, VT: 31º / 46º Fahrenheit (-1º / 8º Celsius) Concord, NH: 28º / 48º Fahrenheit (-2º / 9º Celsius) Portland, ME: 31º / 48º Fahrenheit (-1º / 9º Celsius)

New England is known for its tough-to-predict weather, but November holds fewer surprises than most months. Typically, as the days march on, they grow gradually more frigid and somber. The season's first dusting of snow is often in November, and it's actually a lovely sight. But it's also a harbinger of heftier storms to come. On average, Boston sees 4 inches of rain and 1 inch of snow in November. The farther north you travel in the region, the better your chances of seeing white stuff at some point in the month.

What to Pack

Warm layers are necessary in November, and a winter jacket is likely a must by the end of the month. The farther north you venture, the colder temperatures will be particularly after dark. Pack an umbrella, too, because freezing cold rain is actually the worst. Snow boots might be worth packing, especially if you plan to spend time outdoors.

Best Destinations for November in New England

New England's number one place to visit in November is Plymouth, Massachusetts, of course! There was no "New England" until the Pilgrims arrived aboard the  Mayflower  in 1620 and established the first permanent English settlement on the northern Atlantic coast. You may not know this, but... the Pilgrims did not  mean  to land here! They were bound for Virginia but blew off course. Plymouth is a place  you  should  intend  to visit, though, at least once in your lifetime. Attractions like Plimoth Plantation ,  Plymouth Rock  and  Mayflower II  (returning to Plymouth in 2020) tell the story of the founding of New England and of American traditions that have endured for centuries. If you make reservations in advance, you can even  dine with Pilgrim reenactors on Thanksgiving .

By mid-November, Newport, Rhode Island, is one of the best places in the region for a getaway. Summer's crowds have vanished, so it's easy to get a table at Newport's hottest restaurants. Newport has the densest concentration of B&Bs in all of New England, so you're sure to find a cozy room where you can hide from the elements if November days turn gray. The ocean helps to moderate temperatures, so you may actually find the weather surprisingly tolerable, and a brisk stroll along the  Cliff Walk  may be a highlight of your stay. Best of all, starting November 23, Newport's famed mansions show off their  over-the-top holiday decorations .

If holiday shopping is on your mind, another ideal November destination is the compact coastal city of  Portsmouth, New Hampshire . Here, the shops, galleries and boutiques are all unique, and your holiday budget goes farther because there's no sales tax in New Hampshire. Visit a state-run  New Hampshire Liquor & Wine Outlet , too, to stock up and save on liquid supplies for all of your holiday festivities.

Touring Seasons

You can enjoy a trip to New England any time of year if you prepare for the weather and are wary of the busy times such as Memorial Day (late May), July 4th , Labor Day (early September), Columbus/Indigenous Peoples' Day (mid-October), and Thanksgiving (late November) when hotels , inns, restaurants , and transportation are filled to capacity.

There are also special local holidays such as Patriots Day (April 19th) in Massachusetts and Maine, Hallowe'en (October 31st) in Salem MA, and Christmas (December 25th) in Newport RI.

Early summer and early autumn are less crowded than high summer for a trip to New England . Autumn foliage season and Indian summer are New England's glory times, but winter has its own pleasures: skiing & snowboarding , concerts, First Night & more.

Summer High Season

Without doubt, the most popular times to travel in New England are the summer travel season from Memorial Day to Labor Day (late May, June, July and August) and the autumn foliage season (mid-September through October) centered on Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples' Day , unless you're coming for New England skiing .

Coming late and staying only briefly, spring in New England is often a disappointment . The week or two of spring days in April or May are a delight, with cool temperatures in the evening and just the perfect degree of warmth during the day, in bright, clear sun—just the thing for making maple syrup . But the delight of spring may be so brief that New Englanders joke "Oh, spring...yeah, last year it was on a Tuesday."

Late spring (April, early May), after ski season but before beach time , is traditionally called mud time , when the land thaws and runs to mud. It's the slowest season for tourist facilities, coming after ski season and before summer warmth and school vacations bring out the city folk. Some New England country inns take the opportunity to close , often for a week in April, to take a rest or make repairs. It's not the best time for outdoor activities, but cultural New England thrives.

Foliage Season

Vibrant reds, briliant yellows and muted tans and browns cover the branches. Countryside panoramas become blazing sweeps of color. Individual trees are like huge sun-lanterns . A single leaf can be a marvel.

The leaves die and fall to earth in a blizzard of fall foliage color that is one of earth's finest natural phenomena. The ground is covered in color, and you walk through it, scuffing the leaves about you, as though in a field of gold.

Harvest Weather

Throughout fall foliage season , days are still warm and pleasant , nights a bit chilly but not uncomfortably so. City people load their bikes into the car and head for the country, picking up fresh apple cider , pumpkins , and squash from farm stands on the way home.

Fresh cranberries are on sale in the markets all autumn, and although the blueberry -picking season is past, many apple orchards open so you can " pick-your-own " apples and get the freshest fruit possible at a low price. Many pick-your-own orchards feature fresh-squeezed apple cider for sale, along with apple pies , apple doughnuts and other fruit treats.

Color North to South

The cold touches the northern New England states of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine first, and the color change starts there in September and moves southward and eastward through the region, with the peak of color in the northern states usually in late September and early October .

The peak comes a bit later in the southern states of Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts , often climaxing in mid-October— Columbus Day weekend is often thought to be the "peak," but there is little truth in this as peak color depends on the weather in a specific year, and your location in New England. There's usually plentiful color all the way through the end of October and the celebration of Hallowe'en .

In many years, fall foliage color extends well into November with some of the deepest, most glowing reds on maple, gum and oak trees coming then. You may not see whole forests in bright colors, and by mid- to late November some trees will be bare of leaves, but others will be at their blazing best. If severe wind and rain doesn't bring the leaves down, you may enjoy pockets of brilliant color in protected valleys right through Thanksgiving .

Indian Summer

After a period of chilly weather in October, and perhaps even a touch of frost , New England usually gets a respite, with a short period of warm weather known as Indian summer that can occur in late October or November.

Late summer returns and beckons New Englanders out of their houses to enjoy the chill heavy dew of dawn, the last blaze of color in the trees, the scent of leaf-mold and woodsmoke in the air, the gentle rustle of falling leaves, the crackle of dry leaves underfoot, and the quiet retirement of the natural year.

The sweetest of all New England Indian summers are those that come late in November around Thanksgiving . In rare years, the third week of November can have shirt-sleeve weather , with warm, abundant sun and the grateful feeling that we had received a priceless gift from nature.

Skiing and snowboarding usually begins at northern New England's loftiest ski resorts in early December, but the shopping and partying frenzy leading up to Christmas and New Year's often distracts all but the most resolute skiers.

After the holidays, outdoor winter sports boom until mid- to late-March, with the February Dr Martin Luther King Jr Day holiday weekend being the height of the season—you'll need reservations for everything at your chosen ski resort on " MLK ."

New England Weather & Climate

Temperatures are always cooler in northern New England ( Vermont , New Hampshire , Maine ), than in the south ( Massachusetts , Connecticut , Rhode Island ).

The greatest contrast in temperatures is between the higher elevations in the north (such as Mount Washington ), and the southern coasts (such as the Connecticut Shoreline ).

Spring brings maple syrup , summer means beaches , boating, hiking , biking , camping , canoeing and kayaking , fishing, and windjammer cruises along the Maine coast .

Autumn is New England's glory with its blazing fall foliage . Winter means skiing and snowboarding , concerts, theater, art and celebrations.

Federal & State Holidays

Federal holidays are observed in all 50 US states. I've included New England state holidays here as well.

January 1 - New Year's Day

January, 3rd Monday - Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

February, 3rd Monday - Presidents' Day, commemorating the birthday of George Washington (February 22).

April 19, nearest Monday - Patriots Day, in Massachusetts and Maine, commemorating the battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775 that began the American War of Independence.

May 4 - Rhode Island Independence Day, a state holiday in Rhode Island.

May 17 - Evacuation Day, a public holiday in Suffolk County, Massachusetts (including Boston), celebrating the withdrawal (evacuation) of British troops from Boston in 1776. Rumor has it that the holiday is really in honor of Saint Patrick's Day because of Boston's considerable Irish immigrant heritage.

May, last Monday - Memorial Day, commemorating all who have served in the military for the USA.

June 17 - Bunker Hill Day, a public holiday in Suffolk County, Massachusetts (including Boston), celebrating the victory of American forces at the battle of Bunker (or Breed's) Hill, June 17, 1775.

July 4 - Independence Day, also called the Fourth of July, celebrating the publication of the Declaration of Independence (from Great Britain) on July 4, 1776.

August 8 - Victory Day, a state holiday in Rhode Island, first celebrated as "VJ Day," for the Allied victory over Japan in World War II.

August 16 - Bennington Battle Day, a state holiday in Vermont, commemorating the Battle of Bennington (August 16, 1777), an important victory for American forces in the War of Independence.

September, 1st Monday - Labor Day, celebrating working men and women and their organizations (unions).

October, 2nd Monday - Columbus Day, commemorating the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas (October 12, 1492). Not celebrated in Vermont.

November 11 - Veterans Day is a federal holiday honoring those who have served in the US armed forces. If the 11th is a mid-week day, commemoration ceremonies may be held on the Friday or Monday nearest the day. If the 11th is a Saturday, US government offices close on Friday. If it's a Sunday, they close on Monday.

November, 4th Thursday - Thanksgiving Day, celebrating the harvest, especially that of the Pilgrims in Plymouth Colony in 1621 after a terrible winter when many died.

December 25 - Christmas Day, celebrating the birth of Jesus, and for some people a mid-winter solstice celebration.

Cold and probably snowy, with some days of brilliant sunshine. The January sales bring out the shoppers, and the long Martin Luther King Day weekend brings out the skiers .

Except for the national holidays of New Year's Day and Martin Luther King Day , January is quiet—but not the ski resorts .

New Year's Eve & Day

New Year's Eve in New England is First Night , with elaborate celebrations in some cities and towns.

First Night Parade, Boston MA

New Year's Day (January 1) is a holiday, and transportation services can be busy on December 31st and January 2nd.

After New Year's, the first two weeks of January are not a busy time in New England, travel services are unburdened, and prices are lower.

January Weather

In January the weather is cold in New England, probably with snow , sleet or freezing rain, but also days of brilliant sunshine . High temperatures may be about 30° to 40°F (-1.1° to 4.4°C), but are often lower. Low temperatures may be 10° to 20°F (-12° to -7°C), but may be below 0°F (-18°C) during multi-day "cold snaps."

In the mountains temperatures may drop to -10°F (-23°C). Nobody in their right mind climbs to the summit of Mount Washington except the people who have to work there.

Mid-Winter Thaw

Everyone hopes for a mid-winter thaw , a period of several days when unseasonably warm weather moves in and temperatures rise to 50° or even 60°F (10° to 15.5°C), but it does not always happen.

January Shopping

The post-Christmas discount sales start right after Christmas in December, and carry into January as stores seek to extend the holiday shopping season (if at lower prices ), and also to clear out inventory to prepare for the spring product lines.

Martin Luther King Day

Martin Luther King Day (" MLK "), a national holiday commemorating the life, work and tragic death of civil rights crusader Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr., is the third Monday in January , making for a long weekend that many people look upon as the beginning of the ski season (even though the slopes usually open in December). The slopes are always busy on "MLK."

Ski lodges and country inns offer money-saving package deals , especially if you stay on weekdays rather than weekends.

Stowe Winter Carnival , Stowe VT, with ski races, parties and other festivities, many of them outdoors, is held in January.

The weather continues cold (like January) in New England, probably with snow and ice. The numerous cold, brilliant sunny days are great for outdoor activities if you dress warmly.

Winter at Walden Pond, Concord, Massachusetts

With luck, New England enjoys a brief mid-winter thaw in January or early February.

Ski season continues, though many New Englanders fly to the Caribbean or Mexico for a few weeks of warmth and to get away from the need to bundle up in lots of clothing whenever they go outside.

Presidents Day

The third Monday in February is Presidents Day , a national holiday honoring the birthdays of George Washington (February 22) and Abraham Lincoln (February 12). Some museums remain open, but most offices are closed.

School Vacation Week

Many schools take a one-week winter vacation (often in the week of Presidents Day), and airports may be crowded on the weekends before and after the vacation week as families escape to warmer climates.

The holiday weekend is particularly busy in ski country .

Last big snows, lots of skiing, St Patrick's Day , then " mud time " and tapping maple trees of sap to make maple syrup .

Old-fashioned maple sap pails, Brattleboro, Vermont

Traditional wisdom holds that after St. Patrick's Day (March 17) there will be no more big snowstorms in the southern New England states ( Massachusetts , Connecticut , Rhode Island )—but traditional wisdom is occasionally wrong.

In any case, the weather is still cold, and ski resorts in the northern New England states ( Vermont , New Hampshire , Maine ) have plenty of snow until April .

Saint Patrick's Day

Celebrated on March 17th as an Irish heritage day for all Americans, St Patrick's Day is not a holiday—except in Massachusetts' Suffolk County , which includes the City of Boston .

In Suffolk County, March 17th is officially commemorated as Evacuation Day , the date in 1776 on which British forces in Boston, under siege by the Continental Army, decided to withdraw ("evacuate") to Nova Scotia. This signal victory of the Revolutionary War was celebrated in 1902 with the completion of the Dorchester Heights Monument on the hill where the Continentals positioned the cannons that convinced the British to withdraw.

Irish influence having been powerful in Boston during the first half of the 20th century, the proclamation of March 17th as a local patriotic holiday allowed the celebration of St Patrick as well.

Some local government offices are closed on Evacuation Day, but most businesses, museums, etc. are open. A St Patrick's Day parade is held in South Boston , historic home of Boston's Irish-American community.

Mud Time & Maple Sugar

Late March and early April are " mud time " in much of New England, when warming days and chill nights produce partial thaw in the fields and on the hiking trails.

Farmers take advantage of the warming weather and rising sap for " sugaring off ," tapping their maple trees for sap and boiling it down to make maple syrup .

Patriots Day , Easter and universities' spring break are important as the weather warms and blossoms appear.

Redcoats at Lexington Green, Massachusetts

Ski season is winding down and spring has not really arrived, so many country inns close for all or part of April.

Diehard skiers head for the late-season thrills of Tuckerman Ravine i n New Hampshire 's White Mountains .

School Vacation & Spring Break

Easter falls in April in years in 2025, (Aptil 20th), 2026 (April 5th) and 2028 (April 16th), and New England's hundreds of colleges and universities empty out for Easter vacation (or spring break ), complicating travel on the weekends before and after the vacation.

Good Friday , preceding Easter, is not an official holiday though some businesses close and many people travel. Most public schools also have a week's vacation following Easter, which may crowd airports.

Patriots Day

Lexington Minutemen, Lexington, Massachusetts

Patriots Day (April 19) is a state holiday in Massachusetts , and Maine, celebrated on the third Monday in April. The day commemorates the first battles of the Revolutionary War , fought on April 19, 1775 in Lexington and Concord .

All Massachusetts state government offices and many local businesses close, though federal government offices and offices of large interstate and international companies remain open. Most museums are open, with the exception of some state-funded museums.

The headline events are the battle re-enactments in Lexington and Concord, and the Boston Marathon from Hopkinton MA to Boston . These are the events for which you must plan : transportation, parking, crowds.

Among the better-known commemorative events on Patriots Day is the Boston Marathon , which has been run now for over a century.

The re-enactment of the battle on Lexington Green starts at dawn (about 5:30am), but crowds of spectators begin to gather by 4 am, or even earlier. If you don't get there at least two hours early , you won't be able to find any good vantage point for the "battle."

Some people believe that to get the best views, you must stake out your spot three, four or even five hours before. (In other words, you spend the night there .)

About 5:30 am you will hear the redcoats marching along Battle Road as they approach Lexington Green.

Patriots Day events in nearby Concord are a bit nicer to your sleep-time. At 8:30 am the parade with lots of fife-and-drum bands and groups of Minutemen from surrounding towns and as far away as Michigan is followed by a re-enactment of the battle at Old North Bridge, commemorative ceremonies, and the repeated firing of brass cannons by the Concord Independent Battery .

Several church halls open to provide pancake breakfasts to the multitude.

Patriots Day is also the name of a movie (2016) about the Boston Marathon of April 15, 2013, and the terrorist bombings at the finish line.

Boothbay Harbor, Maine

The Boothbay Harbor Fishermen's Festival , Boothbay Harbor ME, is on the second weekend in April, with seafood feasts, exhibits and games.

New England weather trends toward milder and more pleasant—but always unpredictable. A last snowfall is not unheard of, particularly in the mountains of northern New England; but Memorial Day , a national holiday, signals the official start of the summer tourism season . Many seasonal tourist services open for business, and are busy, at least on weekends, through June .

Blossom-covered tree, Woodstock VT

May brings spring to most of New England, with flowers abounding and trees in blossom and early leaf.

Many seasonal tourist services (small museums, campgrounds , summer-schedule flights, etc.) begin operating in May, at least on the weekends.

Days and hours of operation for summer seasonal attractions may be limited, but prices may also be lower.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day , officially May 30th, is celebrated on the last Monday in May, and the long weekend signals the official start of the summer tourism season .

Civil War Re-enactors, Concord MA

" Decoration Day " began on May 30, 1868, when relatives, friends and comrades-in-arms of Civil War dead decorated the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery with flowers.

After World War I, the day became one to commemorate those who had served in the US military in any war.

Many towns organize parades or commemoration ceremonies on the last Monday in May , which was renamed Memorial Day .

The Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of the summer travel and vacation season . On this weekend, highways are busy, buses, trains and planes may run near capacity, and reservations for transportation and lodgings are strongly advised.

The weather is unpredictable . Although it's often very pleasant, it can be cold and raw, chilly but sunny, warm and sunny, or hot and humid. You won't know until it arrives.

The summer tourism season ends unofficially on Labor Day , the first Monday in September.

Rooms at country inns and resort hotels are in great demand on the Memorial Day weekend, and on weekends through Labor Day (in September), but demand may be lower during the week especially in June and early July as New England children are still in school.

In June there are no national holidays , and New England's weather is at its most unpredictable .

Though the weather is changeable , it is usually fine for travel if you're adaptable. Lobsters are in season and cheaper than in the cold months.

Early June is not very busy in New England's vacation areas because most children are still in school .

But when school ends in mid-June , many families head out for their summer vacations at the beach in Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts, or in the mountains of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.

Accommodations , campgrounds , and other services are fairly well occupied on weekends in early June, but are busy most days of the week by late June.

Tourists High Season

Early July sees the tourist season in full swing . The seven weeks from July 4th through Labor Day are the busiest time of the year . The beach resorts and islands are often filled to capacity. Reservations for lodgings, flights, ferryboats, etc. are essential.

The Fourth of July

The Independence Day holiday ( July 4th ), always celebrted on the day itself, is very busy. If it falls on a Friday or a Monday, travel is even busier, as New Englanders have a long weekend for a vacation .

America's War of Independence began at L>exington and Concord in 1775, so New Englanders know something about patriotism.

Independence Day , the Fourth of July, is celebrated on the day itself (not the nearest weekend), with parades, fireworks displays, speeches, picnics (especially at the beach), and cookouts everywhere.

The weather is usually hot, the beer cold, and the food plentiful. Lobster is plentiful, at the lowest prices of the year.

Almost every city and town organizes a patriotic parade , various civic groups sponsor picnics and fairs, and everyone celebrates independence and summertime.

Boston puts on a particularly spectacular display, with an elaborate fireworks show over the Charles River coordinated with a Boston Symphony Orchestra concert at the Hatch Memorial Shell on the Esplanade.

The traditional finale is the playing of Tchaikowsky's pyrotechnical 1812 Overture , complete with the firing of real brass cannons , all computer-coordinated with the fireworks display.

Tourist High Season

All tourist services are filled to capacity , and advance reservations are advised for most everything, and essential for many things such as inn and resort hotel rooms, car ferries , and tables at the most popular vacation restaurants . Lobsters are in season and cheaper than in the cold months.

Travel smart and enjoy smaller crowds and lower hotel prices: visit cities on weekends , and the countryside on weekdays .

Labor Day , the first Monday after the first Sunday in September, is the end of the summer vacation season , though most attractions, including beaches , are open through September, and some into October. Children are back in school, so attractions are less crowded on weekdays. Good month to visit! Foliage season begins at the end of September and gets better and better into October.

Labor Day Weekend

The 3-day Labor Day holiday weekend at the beginning of September is the unofficial end of the busy summer tourist season.

America's September salute to workers began in 1882, and thus predates the celebration of May Day (May 1). Labor groups demanded an 8-hour workday in 1884, to begin on May 1, 1886. The general strike and disastrous Haymarket riots that started on that date in Chicago, the Bread and Roses Strike in Lawrence MA in 1912, and the May Day labor riots of 1919, may be why the USA celebrates labor and workers' contributions in September rather than on the day that the rest of the world—and particularly the socialist and communist parties—now celebrate.

Although there are commemoration ceremonies, Labor Day is overwhelmingly a three-day-weekend national holiday. In New England, many people head to the beaches for a last swim before the weather turns cold, or to the mountains for a hike.

Highways and transportation are busy on Friday afternoon, Saturday morning, and Monday afternoon.

Labor Day weekend is busy, but the two weeks following are a good time to travel since children are back in school, few families travel, services are uncrowded, and some price reductions are offered.

The weather is usually excellent : moderate temperatures, little of the heat of August or of the chill of October. Lobsters are still abundant and reasonably priced, though most will be hard-shelled now. More...

Weekends in September tend to be almost as busy as in August, but on mid-week days (Sunday through Thursday nights), those beach resorts and mountain villages that were so crowded just a few weeks before in August are now pleasantly low-key.

Fall Foliage Season

New England's fall foliage season begins in mid-September in northern New England ( Vermont , New Hampshire , Maine ) and spreads southward.

By late September good foliage color begins to appear in the southern New England states ( Massachusetts , Connecticut , Rhode Island ).

The countryside and seacoasts can be crowded on weekends as city-dwellers enjoy the fine fall weather and go hiking, biking and apple-picking. More...

Visit the cities on weekends , and the countryside during the week , if you can—smaller crowds, lower prices.

On October weekends , travel services are in high demand .

New England's glory : fall foliage season at its best, culminating on Columbus Day . Every inn, motel and B&B room in the countryside is reserved well in advance. The last day of the month is Hallowe'en .

Pumpkin field, New England

In October , New England is a world-class tourist attraction because of the brilliant, varied colors of its autumn foliage .

The weather is usually wonderful : cool to warmish days, cool to chill evenings with lots of bright sun (if we're lucky). You can still have a fine lobster dinner at a reasonable price. More...

In northern New England ( Vermont , New Hampshire and Maine ) there will be some frosty nights, and perhaps a bit of snow.

Bright yellow beeches , flame-red and yellow maples , russet oaks and many other trees turn the countryside into a vast brilliantly-colored painter's canvas.

The blazing crescendo in foliage season is traditionally thought to be the weekend of Columbus Day , a holiday in most US states. Beautiful foliage color lasts well into November.

First celebrated in New York City on October 12, 1792, Columbus Day commemorates Captain Christopher Columbus 's landfall in the New World at the Bahamas in 1492. In recent years, New Englanders have also commemorated the indigeonous people who lived on this continent before the advent of Europeans and Africans.

Columbus/Indigenous Peoples' Day

In New England, Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples' Day , is a national holiday celebrated on the second Monday in October , makes a long weekend that is traditionally considered the height of New England's fall foliage season.

New Englanders pour out of the cities, visitors come from around the world, and special excursion trains and buses packed with " leaf peepers " cruise through the countryside to enjoy the brilliant reds, oranges, yellows and browns of the region's forests of maple, beech, birch and other deciduous trees.

Along with August and Labor Day, foliage season and Columbus Day are the busiest tourism times in New England .

Make Reservations!

If you plan to travel here from early to late October—and especially on Columbus Day weekend — m ake your lodging and transportation reservations as early as possible!

If you have no reservations, you may still be able to find a place to stay, but it may not be of the type, or in the location, that you prefer.

Columbus Day is not the end of foliage season—and may not even be at the " peak color " of the season. Don't think that you must be in New England on Columbus Day weekend to enjoy good foliage color.

Peak color usually begins first in the relatively colder climate of mountainous northern New England and slowly spreads southward, coming much later to the warm shores of Long Island Sound .

It may begin in the north in mid- or late September, and the wave of color finally fade from the southern New England shores of Connecticut and Rhode Island by mid-November.

In Boston , hotels are often filled by conventioneers since October is also a popular month for meetings and conferences.

In the countryside, every hote l, motel , country inn and guest house room is reserved well in advance.

Check room rates and availability here...

Some inns and seasonal services close for the winter after the Columbus Day weekend, and late October is fairly quiet in the countryside , though busy in the cities.

If you plan to tour at this time, however, there will be plenty of services for you, you'll enjoy lower prices , no crowds , and pockets of late-maturing fall color in many places, especially in the southern New England states.

The last evening of the month, October 31st, is celebrated as Hallowe'en, America's version of All Saints' Day.

Halloween Jack-o-Lantern, Concord MA

Hallowe'en started out spooky and malevolent, but has been transformed by jaunty American commercialism into a fun kids' festival of sweet consumption. Children dress in costumes ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous, teenagers pull pranks....especially in Salem , Massachusetts.

A Bit of History

All Saints Day (November 1) is a principal feast of the Roman Catholic and Anglican churches, probably following the medieval custom of commemorating "saints known and unknown" on this day, sometimes known as Allhallows or Hallowmass .

In countries with Celtic influence the vigil on the night before All Saints, the evening of October 31st, incorporated old customs of the Celtic and British Isles, including lighting bonfires , fortune-telling , masquerading and mummery (masked performers in a folk play or mime).

These customs probably had more to do with the onset of winter (the "dead season"), traditionally commemorated on November 1st in pagan societies, than with the celebration of Christian saints.

Trick-or-Treating

In America today the saints have no part to play on October 31st. Hallowe'en is a masquerade festival when children dress in costume and go door to door ("trick-or-treating") asking for sweet treats .

Traditional costumes echo the theme of death and monstrosity: witches, ghosts, goblins, monsters, but in fact any fantasy costume is acceptable, from fairies and spacemen to fruits, vegetables, playing cards and roadkill.

" Trick or Treat ," the door-to-door custom, used to be a jocular, minor shake-down routine: "give me a treat or I'll play a trick on you."

Although vandalism and pranks (occasionally vicious) are still in evidence, the "trick" part of the holiday has little part anymore, at least among the throngs of small children who fill the streets on Hallowe'en evening, going from house to decorated house asking for treats.

The symbol of welcome for trick-or-treaters is having the house's porch light on, and/or a lighted jack-o-lantern and perhaps other Hallowe'en-theme decorations: ghosts, witches, black cats and harvest symbols.

Adults may attend Hallowe'en-themed parties, often in costume.

Hallowe'en in Salem MA

Unfortunately, the noble city of Salem MA is inundated with Hallowe'en revellers every year because of a mistaken belief in its link to witchcraft . More...

The unfortunate martyred souls persecuted by superstitious colonial officials and religious bigots in Salem during the Salem witch trials of 1692 must turn in their graves at the sight of thoughtless romantics dizzy with ditzy visions who turn Salem into an absurd carnival of bizarre pseudo-mystical claptrap every October 31st—but it's good for business.

The Maine Cheese Guild holds its Open Creamery Day in October, the day on which you can visit its member artisanal cheesemakers and see how their tasty cheeses are made.

Many inns and seasonal attractions close after Columbus Day (mid-October), so November is a slow month for travel. The foliage crowds have departed and the ski crowds have not yet arrived. With luck, we may get Indian summer . Then, Thanksgiving , a national holiday, is the busiest travel time of the entire year .

Mount Washington, White Mountains, New Hampshire

Fall foliage season usually extends well into November, particularly in the southern New England states, and even late in the month you'll come across protected valleys still aflame with color.

Veterans' Day

Grave of Louisa May Alcott in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord MA

Veterans Day , November 11th, is a US national holiday commemorating those who have served in the US military forces.

The holiday extends to three days the early- or mid-month weekend nearest November 11th. Businesses and government offices are closed for the day, as are some shops and stores.

All cities and towns remember the day with patriotic decorations, flags, parades and speeches . Often there are ceremonies and prayers in cemeteries where war veterans are buried.

Veterans Day is especially important in New England, as this region of the country has sent its young men and women off to war for longer than any other part of the USA.

The graves of Revolutionary War Minutemen in Lexington and Concord MA are especially commemorated, as these were the first to risk their lives in their country's service.

Veterans Day celebrates the service not just of soldiers, but also of those who brought mercy and comfort to the afflicted of war, such as Concord's Louisa May Alcott.

Ms Alcott served as a nurses' aid in a hospital near Washington during the Civil War. She suffered from illness contracted during her service, never fully regained robust health, and her illness may have contributed to her early death.

With luck, New England's fall foliage season lingers until mid-November, at least in a few places, and New Englanders feel especially lucky if Indian summer brings warm days and not-too-cold nights.

By mid-month the snow has usually arrived in the mountains of the northern New England states, ski resorts begin to open a few lifts and trails, and there may be some flurries or fast-melting snow in the south, especially later in the month around Thanksgiving .

Thanksgiving

The fourth Thursday in November celebrates the arrival of English Calvinist Pilgrims in Plymouth MA, and their establishment, with Wampanoag (Native American) aid, of a successful colony.

Pilgrim Commemoration

Thanksgiving commemorates the first successful year (1621) of the Pilgrim colony at Plymouth MA.

After the first terrible winter, when half of the Pilgrims died, came a summer of abundant crops and successfully hunted game. After the harvest was gathered, the Pilgrims reportedly held a feast of thanksgiving and invited their Wampanoag neighbors who had aided their survival.

President George Washington designated November 26, 1789 as a day of thanksgiving for the new US Constitution, but it was President Abraham Lincoln who, in the midst of the Civil War, declared Thanksgiving to be an annual federal holiday.

Every November, the original Thanksgiving celebration is re-enacted at Plimoth Patuxet Museums i n Plymouth MA.

A Family Holiday

Everyone wants to be with family at Thanksgiving. If this is not possible, they want to be with friends .

Traditional foods served at the Thursday dinner include roast stuffed turkey with cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes (yams), sweet corn, green beans, lima beans, salads, and of course sweet pumpkin pie for dessert.

Strangers and foreigners are invited to join in the feast and join a group of friends or family. No one wants to be alone, or for others to be alone, on the day of national thanksgiving.

If you're visiting New England at Thanksgiving, strike up an acquaintance and you'll probably be invited to join the feast.

Travel Nightmare

This means that the week of Thanksgiving is also the busiest travel time of the entire year in the USA as everyone heads home to be with family: 40 million travelers , 31 million on the highways, 29,000 flights. Flights are fully booked months in advance, highways are clogged, trains and buses are packed to capacity. Transport is slow everywhere.

Wednesday , the day before Thanksgiving, is usually the busiest day, next is the Sunday following Thanksgiving. Tuesday and Saturday of that week also see heavy travel.

The Weather

With a bit of luck, New England's Indian summer may coincide with the Thanksgiving holiday. Fall foliage season and its colorful trees have passed, making a few days of warmth even more welcome.

The Mini-Low-Season

By the way, the weeks in November before Thanksgiving, and the weeks after Thanksgiving until mid-December (that is, before the ramp-up to the Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year's holidays), are excellent times to travel in New England. Transport is uncrowded and fares are lower, although summer businesses are closed off-season.

Some inns also close in November, reopening in December with the advent of ski season .

Get Ready for Skiing!

New England's ski resorts begin to make their own snow if nature has not provided the traditional cover, and some eager skiers take advantage of the Veterans Day holiday (November 11th) for a first schuss down the slopes. By the end of the month most of the large resorts are in action.

Early December travel is easy and inexpensive, but after December 15th, airfares rise, roads become more crowded, everything—especially shopping —is busier right up to Christmas and New Year's Day .

Lighting the holiday tree, Concord MA

Winter comes to northern New England ( Maine , New Hampshire and Vermont ) in November, but by December the entire region is in its thrall.

High temperatures may be about 30° to 40°F (-1.1° to 4.4°C), but are often lower. Low temperatures may be 10° to 20°F (-12° to -7°C).

Usually there is some snow , although in a snowless winter December is best for ice skating on New England's thousands of glacial lakes and ponds. Once snow arrives in quantity after the ponds freeze, degrading the ice surface, the skating season may be over for the winter (barring a January thaw and re-freeze.)

New England ski resorts are open in December, and though they may be fairly busy on weekends , innkeepers offer special low prices on weekdays to lure vacationers.

The Holidays

Christmas at The Breakers, Newport RI

Until the national holidays of Christmas (December 25th) and New Year's Day (January 1), this is not a busy month for tourism. Travel is heavy on the day or two preceding the 25th and the day or two following, then there is a lull until New Year 's, when travel intensifies again.

The holidays are a time of tradition, and as New England is a traditional place, Christmas fits right in. Government offices, banks, most businesses and many public facilities such as museums and libraries are open on Christmas Eve (December 24th), but closed on December 25th.

Colleges and universities tend to close for vacation from just before the 25th until after New Year's Day.

In Boston , a towering Nova Scotia white spruce is erected on Boston Common, a gift of the people of Halifax, perpetually thankful for the aid Boston gave to Halifax after the terrifying munitions explosion of December 6, 1917—the largest man-made explosion in history until that time—leveled most of the city.

In Newport RI , several of the city's sumptuous mansions are decorated for the holidays and opened to visitors for tours, concerts, mulled cider and cookies. The holidays are a great time to visit Newport.

Mystic Seaport in Mystic CT has a special program of holiday festivities.

Nantucket MA features carolers in Victorian garb , art exhibits, and tours of historic houses.

The Interim

The week between Christmas and New Year's Day is one long festival in New England.

On December 26th, the day after the Christmas holiday, the shops and stores re-open to mobs of bargain-hunters eager to get their hands on the heavily-discounted merchandise left over from the frenetic post-Thanksgiving shopping season.

Colleges, universities and schools are on vacation, so young people are everywhere, and especially in the cinemas.

In the holiday interim, many New Englanders go skiing and snowboarding , or take short vacations to New York City , which is very busy then.

First Night/New Year's Eve

As in most of the world, the last day of the year, December 31st , is a perfectly good excuse for a party—in this case, New Year's Eve and First Night .

Ice Sculpture, Boston MA

First Night varies from place to place, but the common theme is good clean fun despite the cold. Arts are prominent, including music, sculpture (ice sculptures are a favorite), exhibitions, costumes, and even parades with decorations and floats. Some cities in the region, especially Boston , organize special amusements and entertainments.

Enjoy the music, performances, shows, parades and processions, lights, noise and winter merriment to drive away the cold and the dark.

Boston's First Night features indoor and outdoor concerts , an ice sculpture show and competition on Boston Common, fireworks over the river, and a dozen other activities.

Burlington VT also has elaborate First Night activities and entertainments.

New Year's Day

New Year's Day is a national holiday. Virtually everything is closed for the holiday: offices, businesses, museums, attractions—all closed.

AWOL Massachusetts

1. Enjoy Provincetown all to yourself

While everyone’s out leaf peeping across the New England mainland, consider escaping to Provincetown . You’ll have the tip of Cape Cod —and its wealth of historic lighthouses, sand dunes, humpback whales, and seaside charm—all to yourself. Yes, the summer crowds thin out at this time of year, but there is still lots to explore in town, thanks to a bustling lineup of festivals which, since the pandemic, basically extends until the holiday season: from Women’s Week, to TransWeek, Spooky Bear, Provincetown Food & Wine Festival, and Holly Folly. . Base yourself in the center of the action at the lovely Gifford House Inn , which just underwent a renovation this year,or opt for something a little removed from the action such as AWOL Provincetown, which overlooks the serene moors at the far West End of downtown. Amble through the boutique-lined “downtown,” bike or walk one of the surrounding nature trails, explore the uninhabited sand dunes of the northern Cape with Art’s Dune Tours (bookings until November 15, 2023), or set sail on a highly rewarding whale watch with eco-conscious company Dolphin Fleet (sailings run through October 29, 2023t).

2. Drive the Vermont Cheese Trail

Many destinations love to organize themselves with wine trails, street art walks, public art districts, and so forth–but did you know that Vermont has its very own Cheese Trail? The Vermont Cheese Council has done all of us the very important public service of putting together a circuit of the state’s top cheesemakers, which makes for an excellent diversion no matter where you find yourself in the state. Some stops are small, family-owned dairy farms on sleepy country roads; others are larger institutions with museums and formal tours. Check out the Vermont Cheese Council’s website for an interactive map with all the stops.

3. Sharpen your kitchen skills at a hotel

There’s no shortage of charming inns and hotels in New England, many of which have really upped their culinary game in recent years—and several of which now invite guests to do the same. The intimate 22-room Relais & Chateaux property The Inn at Hastings Park , located in historic Lexington 30 minutes outside of Boston, offers immersive culinary instructional workshops and supper clubs taught by inn owner and chef Trisha Pérez Kennealy. Down along the coast in sleepy Watch Hill, Rhode Island, summer hotspot Ocean House makes a compelling case for visiting during the off-season with its Center for Wine and Culinary Arts, which offers an educational lineup of classes and wine tasting dinners each fall. A full listing of available classes (some of which are open to the public, not just hotel guests, as single sessions for a fee) is available here .

4. Visit a Trustees of Reservations Property

New Englanders wear their history proudly, and few organizations in the region–or perhaps the country–can compete with Massachusetts’ Trustees of Reservations in terms of historic preservation and land conservation. This non-profit, first established by the Massachusetts Legislature over 130 years ago, owns and cares for over 100 sites of historic or natural significance around the state, from historic estates to sculpture museums to working farms. If you’re coming from Boston, the World’s End Reservation in Hingham or the Harold Parker State Forest in Andover are just about half an hour’s drive from the city proper. If you have time to venture further afield, the Naumkeag Pumpkin Show uses over 1500 jack-o-lanterns to bring a historic Berkshires estate to life. .

5. Soak up some culture and history

If it’s looking like more of an indoor kind of day, turn your attention to the multitude of museums and historic sites New England has to offer, many of which are located in Boston—or as a convenient day trip away. There are the institutional biggies like the classic Museum of Fine Arts Boston (which this fall welcomes “Fashioned by Sargent,” an exhibition about the role of fashion in Sargent’s portraiture), the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston (catch the new exhibit Forecast Form, about art of the Caribbean Diaspora), the intimate Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum , and the great-for-kids Museum of Science . Or turn your eye outside of the city limits where more options abound. Drive out to the Berkshires and visit The Clark for impressionism and old masters, or Mass MoCA , a sprawling contemporary art museum set in a former mill complex. The nine-installation James Turrell: Into the Light exhibit (note that advanced reservations are required), is now accompanied by C.A.V.U .—Turrell's largest free-standing circular Skyspace that was three decades in the making, and opened earlier last year.

Lodge at Spruce Peak

6. See the leaves via zip line

There's driving through autumnal foliage from the comfort of your car. But then there's getting a thrilling bird’s-eye view via a zip line. Many of New England’s ski areas offer zip line activities during the summer and fall months, such as Gunstock Mountain Resort in the heart of New Hampshire’s Lakes Region (go there for epic water views over Lake Winnipesaukee), or at Catamout Mountain Resort in the Berkshires (the longest zip line in New England, at over 5,500 feet long).

Contessa

7. Get to know Boston’s rising farm-to-table scene

With new regional developments in year-round farming and hydroponics, there's been a rise in popularity for seasonal, locally-sourced farm-to-table cuisine—and fall is the best time to try it all. In Boston, head over to the Seaport District for dinner at Woods Hill Pier 4 , or to Puritan & Company in Cambridge, where Robert Downey, Jr. and Scarlett Johanssen were recently spotted dining. Rooftop apertivo bar Contessa (pictured) has also maintained its appeal (think inventive Northern Italian menu and Public Garden-view) since Carbone-famous Major Food Group opened it in 2021 atop the Newbury Hotel —a perfect urban leaf-peeping spot. Outside of the city, consider a stop by Gilson’s farm in Groton, about forty minutes west of Boston where the suburbs quickly give way to bucolic, rolling hillsides. Chef Will Gilson’s popular “Herb Lyceum” dinner series returns this year on select Fridays and Saturdays throughout the season. These dinners feature five courses of Gilson’s seasonal produce, starting with passed appetizers in the gardens and then moving inside to an open air carriage house for a communal dining experience capped at just 30 guests.Keep an eye on Herb Lyceum’s website for updated dates and ticket info. And if your travels bring you to Cape Cod, the Chatham Bars Inn’s popular Fall Greenhouse Dinner Series returns this year with four unique culinary experiences held at the hotel’s Farm in Brewster.

Boston Harbor City Cruises

8. Go whale watching

Between Cape Ann and Cape Cod in Massachusetts, the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary is one of the top spots for whale watching in the country, where you’ll typically end up on organized trips from the Cape, the North Shore, or even Boston . Most don’t realize that the best time to whale watch is October through early November, when the boat crowds have thinned and the humpbacks are out in full-force—it’s a great time of year to get breaching photos. Boston Harbor Cruises offers its whale watching trips through mid-November this year.

The Witch Memorial in Salem Massachusetts

9. Explore modern-day Salem

The history of Salem, Massachusetts, may be steeped in witchcraft, but its modern-day magic is hard to miss. Base yourself at The Merchant , a 200-year-old home that once belonged to sea merchant Joshua Ward and is now a colorful and creative boutique hotel in close proximity to the Salem Witch Trials Memorial and the Salem Witch Museum. Then browse the American decorative art collections at the oldest continuously operating and collecting museum in the U.S., the Peabody Essex Museum (catch the new exhibit The Salem Witch Trials: Restoring Justice, which wraps November 26th). Book a spooky, lantern-lit walking tour to learn more about Salem’s nefarious past, then dine at one of the city’s buzzy restaurants like Ledger , which serves dishes like spaghetti alle vongole made with Duxbury clams in the spectacular setting of a former bank.

Colorful cranberry bog in the Shouth Shore region of Massachusetts. The cranberry is Massachusetts' number one...

10. Experience cranberry season

Live the Ocean Spray dream and sign up for a tour at A.D. Makepeace Company in Wareham —the world’s largest cranberry grower. In non-pandemic times, guests are invited to throw on a pair of overalls and wade through the bogs, but this year, they've linked up with the Cape Cod Cranberry Growers’ Association for an industry-wide bus tour.

Castle Hill Inn

11. Discover a different side of Rhode Island

Since it’s more about the coast than the forest in America’s smallest state, Rhode Island may not be an obvious choice for fall—but it's prime time to experience the "locals' summer." Split your days between walks on vast, near-empty beaches, and drives along colorful, canopied country roads. Head down oceanfront Scenic Route 1A from Westerly to Wickford—it’s about 40 miles, a long distance in Rhode Island terms—for the ultimate juxtaposition of seaside backdrops and changing leaves, and base yourself in tony Newport, which has a markedly low-key vibe this time of year. For overnights, book a room at the adorable new Gardiner House , nestled on a quiet waterfront street, or at the Brenton Hotel, which overlooks the iconic Bowen’s Wharf Marina and sits across the street from buzzy new Mother Pizzeria.

Mount Katahdin near Baxter State Park in Maine

12. Go hiking

Take advantage of the crisp fall weather to work up a sweat in New England’s wilder regions. For something truly rugged, head up north to Maine, where Baxter State park, the Nahmakanta Public Reserved Land and the Appalachian Mountain Club 100-Mile Wilderness Conservation Area offer a truly unspoiled outdoors experience. There are enough hiking trails—lined with brightly colored trees and towering evergreens, punctuated by boulder-strewn streams, lakes, and ponds—to keep all skill levels busy and happy.

Closer to Boston, the World’s End Reservation in Hingham or the Harold Parker State Forest in Andover are just about half an hour’s drive from the city proper. If the weather is clear and you’re still up for a mountainous challenge, the Tuckerman’s Ravine Trail on Mount Washington in New Hampshire offers some of the best alpine hiking on the east coast.

Image may contain Building Architecture Tower Lighthouse and Beacon

13. Explore Maine’s many lighthouses

If some Coastal Grandma vibes are up your alley this fall, consider a choose-your-own-adventure road trip up and down the Maine coast (or down and up, or whichever way you please). The state offers an astonishing 65 historic lighthouses, many of which are open to the public, and some of which even allow access to the keeper’s quarters, for an up-close view of how these iconic structures work. Many of them are still, today, actively used for offshore navigation. Check out the Maine Office of Tourism’s website for an interactive map of where you can find each lighthouse.

The Glen House hotel

14. Go apple (and pumpkin) picking

Nothing says fall in New England like pumpkin patches and apple orchards (and the cider doughnuts produced therein). At family-run Shelburne Orchards in northern Vermont, pick your own apples, feast on crispy cider doughnuts, sip fresh-pressed cider, and sample seven-year-old cask-aged Apple Brandy made on the premises. (Don't miss the Pommeau, a fortified cider, either.) In Loudon, New Hampshire, savor piping-hot cider doughnuts at Meadow Ledge Farm (so good they often command a 45-minute line), and in Meredith, New Hampshire, get lost in a mega-corn maze, pick your own pumpkins, and try cider doughnuts with a twist (think chocolate drizzle and sprinkles) at Moulton Farm . And while pick-your-own apples are common across much of New England, there seems to be a slightly higher concentration of these farms down in Connecticut–like at the tenth-generation family owned Averill Farm in Washington Depot, operating since 1746.

15. Treat yourself to a five-star spa day

Autumn tends to bring plenty of mild weather, but it also requires plans for the occasional rainy day. Book some time at the glamorous new Guerlain Spa inside Raffles Boston for some time at the city’s buzziest new urban spa sanctuary (it’s scheduled to open in late October). . On Massachusetts’ South Shore, locals love the Mirbeau Inn & Spa for its luxurious spa treatments, as well as year-round Acqua Terrace, an outdoor space with a waterfall, fireplace, relaxing oversized whirlpool tubs, and drinks service.

And don’t make the mistake of assuming the Encore Boston Harbor only offers its rowdy nightlife and casino scenes–this enormous property, located in Everett just beyond Boston proper, is also home to one of New England’s largest, most glorious spas. Facials, in particular, are a strong suit here, with offerings from HydraFacial, Biologique Recherche and Dr. Babor. You’ll leave positively glowing—and perhaps with a little more luck on your side, too.

16. Plan a leaf-peeping road trip

Yes, it's the worst phrase ever, but there's nothing cringe-inducing about New England's highways in October—there's even a handy fall foliage map to help you plan the ideal weekend away. Make sure your road trip includes one of the following: New Hampshire’s Kancamagus Highway, a 34.5-mile National Scenic Byway through the state’s White Mountain National Forest, an itinerary through Vermont’s Green Mountain National Forest, or the famed 63-mile Mohawk Trail through Massachusetts’s Berkshire Mountains. Each showcases the region’s most dramatic colors.

7 Fun Things To Do In New England in November

Vanessa | New England + Places

While it may not be the most beautiful time of the year to visit New England, November brings cooler weather, naked trees and fewer tourists. New England in November is, well, unpredictable. Since moving here 5 years ago we have had snow on Thanksgiving, leaves until the middle of the month, and bitter cold. I don’t know that there is a “normal” for New England in November (or in any month, for that matter) but have no fear, there are still some great things to do if you decide to visit New England in November.

1.Go to a fun Harvest Festival

Franklin County Cider Days Nov 2-4, 2018 this is an annual celebration of all things apple in Franklin County, Massachusetts

The Maine Harvest Festival Nov 17-18, 2018 (10 am to 4 pm) this festival is located in Bangor, Maine and offers cooking demos, wine and spirit tastings, and local music.

2.Check out America’s Hometown Thanksgiving Day Parade on Nov 17. Plymouth, Massachusetts hosts this festive event that includes historical reenactments, patriotic concerts, and a food festival. Apparently, the floats in this parade are really something to see!

3. Plimouth Plantation : The most popular option, and to be honest the reason most people visit in the month of November. Now I have yet to visit Plimouth Plantation for their Thanksgiving Feast but I am trying to convince Corey that it’s a great idea for this year (check back to see if I was actually able to convince him.)

You see, every autumn, according to their website, Plimouth Plantation offers an “immensely popular Thanksgiving dining programs. Fresh ingredients, mouthwatering flavors, festive surroundings, and a sense of history that can be found nowhere else in the world.” Doesn’t that sound awesome?!? Maybe it’s the history nerd in me, but I love the idea of having a Thanksgiving meal with Pilgrim role-players and native interpreters.

Unfortunately, you have to book early because slots for Thanksgiving Day fill up fast. It’s the beginning of November and there is only 1 time slot left for Thanksgiving Day this year. In case you don’t want to be out on the day of thanksgiving, they also offer a time slot on Friday, Nov 23. For more information on visiting Plimouth Plantation, check out their website here .

If you want to read more about Plymouth, Massachusetts click here and for more information on the first Thanksgiving, check out my history nuggets here .

4. Old Sturbridge Village : in Massachusetts for if you want to get that historical feel but don’t feel like dealing with the crowds at Plimouth Plantation! Go back to the 1830’s and experience Thanksgiving in New England at Old Sturbridge Village. Every Wednesday – Sunday from 9:30 am – 4 pm in November experience Bounty: Thanksgiving. On weekends, you can enjoy a delicious bountiful harvest buffet in the Bullard Tavern from 11:30 am – 2:30 pm for $21.95 for adults.

5. Stratton Mountain Resort : in Vermont offers Stratton Village Stroll starting Nov 23 rd (yep the day after Thanksgiving). The tree lighting is at 5:30 pm complete with carolers from 5:30 to 8 pm. This event also marks the start of ski season at Stratton!

6. Lighting of the Nubble : if you are in New England for Thanksgiving you can’t miss the lighting of Nubble Lighthouse (Cape Neddick Lighthouse) on November 24 th from 5pm5 pm – 7 pm. Santa will be there with music, cookies and yummy hot chocolate.

new england travel in november

7. Bright Night in Forest Park : Springfield, MA – If you want to get into the Christmas spirit you can’t miss Bright Nights at 300 Sumner Avenue, Springfield, MA 01108. Running from November 21 – January 1 (with the exception of Nov 26 and 27). Mon – Fri from 5 pm to 9 pm. Sat – Sun from 5 pm to 11 pm. The rates may vary based on vehicle type but will be somewhere between $18-$21 per vehicle. All major credit cards are accepted. This Christmas light extravaganza has been rated as one of the top ten holiday attractions in North America and has welcomed over 3.8 million visitors.

And seriously how is it that time of year already? Don’t get me wrong, Christmas is my favorite, BUT this year really flew by!

Fall in new england: when & where to go in 2023.

Time your New England fall getaway with prime leaf peeping.

Fall in New England

Explore vivid fall colors at a variety of New England destinations, such as along Kancamagus Highway in New Hampshire.

New England is a popular destination for fall getaways, with its crisp, cool weather; the pick-your-own produce and fresh-pressed cider at family-owned farms; some of the country's best harvest festivals ; and – the main attraction – stunning foliage.

Perhaps the only challenge of visiting New England (or any destination known for its fall foliage ) this time of year is figuring out exactly when to go for prime leaf peeping. Visit too soon and the fall colors may not have peaked; visit too late and the trees may be bare. So when (and where) should you go?

The Best Time to Visit New England in the Fall

Camden and Penobscot Bay viewed from Mount Battie, Maine, in the fall.

For peak (or close to peak) fall foliage in 2023, plan to visit New England the first week of October.

"With El Niño possibly impacting our autumn, I think we may see a little bit of a 'slow-burn,' which means the fall colors are slow to develop," explains Jeff "Foliage" Folger, a New England resident, photographer and former fall foliage blogger for Yankee Magazine. "I suspect if we get enough rain during the summer, there may not be a big impact, but I would slide a few days later into October from the usual dates (in late September) for the best colors."

He also notes that prime leaf-peeping times vary by location. "The best time to be in New England is in October but remember it does not change all at once. It starts up north near Canada and over the next 30-plus days (into November) it will flow to the South and West until all the fall colors have drained out of New England into New York and points west."

On his website, jeff-foliage.com , where he shares fall predictions, photo tips and New England travel ideas, he notes that it wasn't until about the second week of October (specifically Oct. 6 to 10) that the fall colors made their appearance last fall – and this was under "normal" conditions, with New England seeing average rainfall throughout the summer. But summer 2023 is predicted to be especially dry and hot across the U.S.

6 Scenic Places to See New England Fall Foliage

Montgomery, vermont.

Waterville, Vermont, Montgomery Covered Bridge with fall foliage.

Folger prefers going off the beaten path in Vermont. "A drive on Route 58 in Hazen's Notch near Montgomery means you will almost be alone (usually)," he says. You'll also spot as many as seven covered bridges – the perfect backdrop for fall foliage photos – as Montgomery is considered the "Covered Bridge Capital" of Vermont.

Stowe, Vermont

The community church of Stowe, Vermont, among the autumn landscape.

Before the first snowfall descends upon this famous ski town , Stowe touts another reason to visit: the stunning fall foliage. Nicknamed "Fall's Color Capital," Stowe offers a plethora of outdoor activities, from biking and zip lining amid the changing leaves to strolling through downtown Stowe, a quintessential Vermont experience .

There's no shortage of scenic drives, either. Folger recommends heading north on state Route 108 (also known as the Smugglers' Notch Pass Scenic Highway) toward Smugglers' Notch. For the ultimate experience, book a stay at the dog-friendly Topnotch Resort , located in the foothills of Mount Mansfield, the highest mountain in Vermont.

Kancamagus Highway, New Hampshire

Aerial of Kancamagus Highway, New Hampshire, surrounded by trees in the fall.

One of the most scenic drives in New England, the Kancamagus Highway bursts with color in the fall. The roughly 35-mile remote route takes travelers through White Mountain National Forest, with views of the White Mountains in the distance and the smell of fresh pine up close.

"The Kanc" is also convenient for another epic experience in New Hampshire : the Mount Washington Cog Railway. Opened in 1869, it is the world's first mountain-climbing cog railway.

Visit NH recommends starting your journey in Lincoln. Drive along the Kancamagus Highway (state Route 112) to Conway, then take state Route 16 north through North Conway. From there, you'll carry on along U.S. Route 302 through Crawford Notch to the Mount Washington Cog Railway. Then, from the Cog, you can take U.S. Route 3 to Interstate 93 through Franconia Notch State Park back to Lincoln. Or, you might consider spending the night at the famous Omni Mount Washington Resort – the perfect spot for a romantic New Hampshire getaway .

Camden, Maine

Camden Harbor, Maine, on a fall morning.

Courtesy of Maine Office of Tourism

While Acadia National Park and the neighboring town of Bar Harbor are undeniably stunning (and particularly popular) in the fall, don't overlook the charming town of Camden, about 80 miles southwest.

One of the best places to visit in Maine , this coastal village offers more than 30 miles of hiking trails – including plenty of easy-to-moderate paths – at Camden Hills State Park. If you're up for a challenge, take the famous Mount Battie Trail, which rewards hikers with stunning views of Penobscot Bay. Afterward, head into town for a bite to eat by the water and some shopping.

Lenox, Massachusetts

Autumn in the small village of Lenox, Massachusetts.

A stunning rural region in the mountains of western Massachusetts, the Berkshires are known for breathtaking scenery, especially in the fall. Leaf peeping experiences include hiking, scenic drives, hot air balloon rides and the Hoosac Valley Train Rides in Adams.

Ashley Rossi, managing editor at Roadpass Digital and a New England native, particularly likes the town of Lenox. "Lenox is home to historic museums, world-class spas, farms, and of course, incredible mountainous landscapes come fall," she says. After you see the foliage up close on foot at October Mountain State Forest, Rossi recommends heading to Edith Wharton's estate (The Mount) or the Ventfort Hall Mansion and Gilded Age Museum for a history lesson. You can also tour the grounds of Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. For unique, luxury accommodations, check into the Wheatleigh or Life House, Berkshires.

Vacations by Rail

Railroad tracks through a forest in the fall.

For the ultimate New England fall experience, you can book a trip with Vacations by Rail, which offers two fall foliage-inspired itineraries:

Autumn Tour in New England: This eight-day experience includes three different rail journeys, including the Cape Cod Dinner Train. It makes stops in Boston ; Newport, Rhode Island ; Mystic, Connecticut; North Conway, New Hampshire; and more.

Fall Colors, Scenic Trains & Martha's Vineyard: A 10-day journey, this tour also covers three different rail journeys plus lake and river cruises and a variety of towns and attractions. Stops include Martha's Vineyard and Old Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts.

Best November-December Getaways in New England

Halloween might be over, but that doesn’t mean that fall is! Just ignore that holiday decor that’s now available in your favorite stores. There’s still plenty left to savor when it comes to the fall season, right up until December. Football on TV, the last bit of the fall foliage, cozy bonfires and hot chocolate, prepping for the big Thanksgiving meal — it all still awaits, and there’s no better place to enjoy it all than New England.

                                                       Explore Fall Getaways

This region of the country is perfect for a fall - early winter weekend getaway. You get to take in the last bits of the season before the holiday hustle hits and no matter who you travel with you’re sure to enjoy yourself. Couples young and old can enjoy a little alone time before welcoming family far and wide for Thanksgiving and Christmas events. Groups of girlfriends or friends of all types can relax and rejuvenate and not think about the kids being off for two weeks during the winter, or all the Christmas shopping that’s coming up. Even multigenerational travel groups will enjoy a fun fall getaway in New England — maybe this is even the perfect time to start a little Thanksgiving tradition, a fall weekend away with the fam versus cramming everyone into one tiny dining room.

Whatever your reason for seeking the seasonal fun that a November-December weekend in New England can provide, here are a few destinations and activities to consider as you start planning.

1. Outdoor Fun at White Mountain Hotel and Resort, New Hampshire

In North Conway, New Hampshire, escape to the mountains while you enjoy a stay in luxury at The White Mountain Hotel & Resort . This property has something for everyone you’re traveling with, plus spaces that bring together the whole group. Your crew can split off to enjoy the outdoor fun, such as hiking or going for a swim in the outdoor heated pool, before coming back together at the fire pit or the jacuzzi.

The property’s Fall Escape and Ski packages   makes a getaway even easier. It includes two nights of accommodations, dinner at Ledges Restaurant, two breakfasts and use of all the resort’s facilities.

2. Seasonal Eats at Dan’l Webster Inn and Spa, Massachusetts

If there’s one great thing about fall in New England, it’s the food. This region of the country, all up and down the coast, boasts such great fall bites, from fresh baked goods to all things apple, hard cider galore to bountiful seafood harvests. Experience the best of Massachusetts’s fall harvest when you stay at Dan’l Webster Inn and Spa .

The elegant inn’s Fall Frolic Package is perfect for a couple of foodies looking for a quick getaway. The stay bundle includes one night of accommodations at a discounted rate, a great fit if you want to drive in on a Saturday afternoon and stay through a lazy Sunday morning; a meal allowance for breakfast, lunch or dinner at the on-site restaurant or tavern; a bottle of sparkling cider; a jar of locally-made, seasonal jam; and a box of chocolates.

3. A Thanksgiving to Remember at Meadowmere Resort, Maine

If you do want to start a new Thanksgiving tradition by getting the whole family away for the holiday, then look no further than Meadowmere Resort in Ogunquit, Maine. This wonderful resort is a large family’s dream. There’s something for every age group and every interest and it’s all at your fingertips.

So, this year, forget those crowded family functions and the ever-looming possibility of burning the turkey, much to your mother-in-law’s dismay. Spend Thanksgiving at Meadowmere instead.

The resort offers what it calls a Thanksgiving Holiday Survival Kit, but we assure you that you’ll do much more than just survive when you spend the day or weekend here — you’ll positively thrive.

In addition to enjoying Thanksgiving in your own private guestroom (goodbye to sharing a bedroom with your little brother!), you’ll indulge in a full breakfast every morning, a traditional Thanksgiving dinner (no dirty dishes included), shopping deals at the nearby outlets (hello, Black Friday!) and access to all the resort’s amenities, like the hot tubs, game room and indoor pool.

4. Shoulder Season in Newport, Rhode Island, Courtesy of Hotel Viking

Newport, Rhode Island, is such a picturesque little New England community. Everyone should visit at least once, but this ritzy vacation destination can get majorly crowded during the summer months. Things tend to cool off a bit in the fall, though, making Newport a great pick for a November-December weekend getaway in New England.

The luxurious and posh Hotel Viking offers its Fall in New England special to easily cater to your needs. In addition to discounted parking, you’ll get a $50 gas card, just what you’ll need for exploring the town, and a picnic for two. Definitely take the basket of scrumptious goodies out to Ocean Drive, for lovely views of the water and Newport’s historic mansions.

5. Rekindle the Romance at Interlaken Inn, Connecticut

Perhaps you and your sweetie really need to recharge the batteries before you head into the holidays as a united front against all the stress that can pop up this time of year. If so, maybe consider a getaway for just the two of you this fall. Interlaken Inn in Lakeville, Connecticut, has just the ticket. The inn’s Instant Romance package comes with one night of accommodations, great for getting away from the kids for just a minimal amount of time; chocolate-covered strawberries and Champagne, delivered straight to your guestroom, for some classic romance; a three-course dinner for two; a picnic lunch with a picnic hamper that you get to take home as a souvenir; and then breakfast for two afterward. It’s everything you could need!

6. Hike Your Way Through the White Mountains, Starting at Snowvillage Inn, New Hampshire

Hiking in New England in the fall and early winter is arguably much better than hiking in New England during the summer. The foliage is vibrant, the bugs are at a minimum and there’s no sweat! Planning a trip to the northeast and wondering what the best places to visit in New England are? Well, I’m happy to say that you’ve come to the right place 😊 I live locally in the northeast, and have been exploring the New England region for over 15 years now. I’ve been all over this area, scouting out the most beautiful towns, finding the most exciting cities, have taken tons of road trips, and set sail to visit the islands off the coast. This post is a compilation of my absolute favorite places in New England that I’ve visited over the years that I think are worth your time.

Ready to explore this beautiful region with me? Great! I’m happy to show you around 😊 Under each destination, I’ll share why I love it, and what I think the top things to do are.

On this list, you’ll find a mix of popular places you’ve likely heard of because well, they’re popular for a very good reason! And then I’ve also included some off-the-beaten-path gems that you may not have come across that I think are so beautiful.

Best Places To Visit In New England

1. mount desert island & acadia national park.

Views from the top of Cadillac Mountain, which should definitely be on your Boston to Bar Harbor road trip itinerary.

Acadia National Park always tops everyone’s list of things to see in New England, and as someone who’s been there tons of times, I can say that it lives up to its reputation. This is where you’ll find that postcard-worthy, dramatic coastline Maine is famous for, and if you’re looking for the most iconic views in the state, Acadia is very much worth your time.

Acadia is located on Mount Desert Island, which is actually home to a lot of other beautiful places in New England to see, including the closest town to the park – Bar Harbor. This charming little coastal town is where most people stay when visiting the park, and it’s a worthy destination on its own.

On Mount Desert Island, you’ll also find Southwest Harbor, Tremont, and Somesville, all of which have their own fun things to do, and gorgeous scenery to enjoy.

Be sure to look for little overlooks during your walk on Ocean Path, which is a must-do when planning your Acadia National Park itinerary!

Inside the park, I recommend driving Park Loop Road, walking Ocean Path for the best views for the the least amount of effort, having lunch at Jordan Pond House, enjoying sunrise (or sunset!) at the top of Cadillac Mountain, and taking on a few hikes – Great Head, Beehive, Gorham, and Bubble Rock are some of my favorites.

Psst! I have some guides on visiting Acadia and Bar Harbor, which go into more detail on how to plan your trip, including:

2. Whale Watching In Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary

A whale fluke off the coast of Cape Cod, which is one of the best places to visit in New England for wildlife.

Did you know that New England is home to some of the best whale watching in the world? Yep, that’s right! Off the coast of this region is the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary , which is known for its very active marine life, including different kinds of whales ranging from humpback to minke. In fact, it’s quite common to have a humpback sighting in this region, so make sure to have your camera ready 😉

And what’s even better is that you can hop on a whale watch tour that heads out to Stellwagen from a few different places around New England. My favorite is Dolphin Fleet , which sails out of Provincetown on Cape Cod, MA. Another great option is Cape Anne Whale Watch , which departs from Gloucester, MA.

3. The Cape Cod National Seashore

Nauset Lighthouse Beach in Eastham, MA along the Cape Cod National Seashore, which is one of the best places to visit in New England.

Cape Cod is known as one of the best places for a beach vacation in New England, and while a lot of that has to do with the charming coastal towns, amazing seafood, and beautiful scenery, I think it’s a special place because of the Cape Cod National Seashore.

This area on Cape Cod is so picturesque and undeveloped, that it was designated as protected land by President John F. Kennedy in 1961. It’s home to some of the most beautiful beaches in New England, lighthouses, scenic trails, and lots more. In fact, this is the top thing I suggest to everyone visiting Cape Cod.

Within the national seashore, my favorite things to do are walk the Nauset Marsh trail to Coast Guard Beach (my favorite beach on Cape Cod), see Nauset Lighthouse, and hike out to Race Point Lighthouse.

Psst! I have a detailed guide all about the 6 Cape Cod National Seashore beaches , including a breakdown of each one, and my tips on which you should visit on your trip.

4. The Brewster Flats, Cape Cod

The Brewster Flats on Cape Cod at low tide, with me walking on the exposed ocean floor.

Most people haven’t heard of the Brewster Flats on Cape Cod, but they’re actually the largest tidal flats in North America! And honestly, it’s such a cool thing and unique thing to experience that a lot of people don’t know about when they visit.

So, what are the flats, exactly? Well, every day at low tide, the tide goes so far out that you can walk on the ocean floor for about a mile. Not only does it feel like you’re at the end of the world, it’s great for spotting marine wildlife and getting a first-hand look at what lives at the bottom of the ocean floor in this region.

The Brewster Flats, despite their name, expand further past the town of Brewster along the Cape Cod Bay side of the peninsula, and you can find them at beaches between Dennis and Eastham.

Pro Tip : There are times when low tide coincides with sunset, and since the sun will set over Cape Cod Bay, this is an even more special time to visit!

5. Provincetown, MA

Me walking my dog in front of a cottage in Provincetown, MA, which is one of the most beautiful places to visit in New England.

I’ve already mentioned Provincetown as a great launching point for a whale watch tour, but it’s such a cool destination on its own that it’s very much worthy of its own spot on this list.

Provincetown is located at the very trip of the Cape Cod peninsula, and honestly, there’s no other place quite like it. It’s both a lively and peaceful beach town, packed with character, and you’ll find picturesque scenery at every turn.

Provincetown has long been known as a haven for artists and the LGBTQI+ community, and the welcoming nature of the town can be felt once you arrive. The main street that runs through town is called Commercial Street, and it’s filled with art galleries, independent shops, restaurants, and cabaret clubs. And honestly, everyone is always in such a good mood while here!

I have to spend time in Provincetown every time I visit Cape Cod, and it’s almost indescribable, so definitely go experience it for yourself 😊

6. Chatham, MA

A house in Chatham, MA with its blooming hydrangeas in July.

Known as the most idyllic and charming town on Cape Cod, Chatham is also one you don’t want to miss while visiting the region. Home to a lovely Main Street with great shopping and dining, the side streets are filled with gorgeous houses, and perfectly manicured gardens bursting with hydrangeas in the summer.

In Chatham, you’ll also have beaches to explore, a lighthouse to see, and this is also one of the best places to spot seals on Cape Cod . The Chatham Fish Pier and Market is where many of the local fisherman dock, and well … the seals know what’s on those boats 😂 So, they hang out there waiting for some treats, and they get so close to the pier, allowing you to enjoy their cuteness up close.

Psst! I have lots of guides about Cape Cod, and here my guides on Provincetown and Chatham as mentioned above, as well as some of my most popular ones:

7. Nantucket, MA

Old North Wharf cottages on Nantucket Island in late June.

As one of my all-time favorite places in New England to visit, Nantucket is one I always recommend to people looking for one of the most idyllic places in the country. This island off the coast of Cape Cod is just so charming that it’ll be tough to not snap pictures of it your entire visit.

Once you step off the ferry onto the cobblestoned streets of downtown, you’re greeted with storefronts covered in traditional Cape Cod shingles, and you’ll start to wonder if you’ve been transported into a Hallmark movie.

View from the top of Steps Beach on Nantucket island, MA.

But in addition to the gorgeous downtown area, Nantucket is also home to some of the best beaches on the East Coast, as well as charming rose-covered cottages, beautiful lighthouses, and impressive hydrangeas in the summer.

Nantucket is one of the most expensive destinations on this list, and unfortunately, hotel prices can be prohibitive for a lot of people. However, spring and fall offers some savings in that area, and day trips are always a great way to experience the island (and are easy to do from Cape Cod).

I have a few guides about visiting Nantucket if you need more information, including:

8. Aquinnah Cliffs – Martha’s Vineyard

The cliffs in Aquinnah is one of the absolute best things to do on Martha's Vineyard.

The other Cape Cod island is no less special, and a bit different than Nantucket in some ways – but also very beautiful! One of the best places to visit in New England is absolutely Martha’s Vineyard, and one of the prettiest places on the island to experience is the Aquinnah Cliffs.

The famous Aquinnah Cliffs offer dramatic coastline views with towering bluffs and a beautiful lighthouse. The beach below the cliffs, Moshup Beach, is also open to the public, and includes a short scenic trail that leads down to the shoreline, making the entire experience worth the effort to get to this part of the island.

But that isn’t the only reason Martha’s Vineyard is worth visiting. It’s also known for its gorgeous gingerbread cottages in Oak Bluffs, the stunning South Beach, lovely lighthouses, charming towns, Jaws Bridge (yep, from the movie!), and amazing rural scenery (and as a result, awesome farm stands!).

South Beach on Martha's Vineyard is one of the best places to visit when you come to the island.

  • How To See Martha’s Vineyard Without A Car

9. Newport, RI

Goat Island Lighthouse with the Newport Bridge in the background.

Heading over to Rhode Island, Newport is definitely a destination to have on your radar as you plan your trip to New England.

This “City by the Sea,” as it’s often called, doesn’t really feel like a city at all, and more like a charming town on the water. Known for its Gilded Age mansions, incredible culinary scene, beautiful scenery, amazing coastal walks and drives, and awesome shopping, there’s something to do here for just about anyone.

Of course, The Breakers mansion is one thing you don’t want to miss during your visit. This mansion served as a “summer cottage” for the Vanderbilt family, and the entire estate is just one impressive, opulent room after another, including a gorgeous veranda overlooking the ocean.

The Cliff Walk in Newport, RI is one of the best things to do in New England.

During your trip, I also recommend doing the Cliff Walk, which a pedestrian path along the coast that offers some of the best views in Newport. And if you have time after exploring downtown, definitely cruise along Ocean Drive for more coastal views, and visit the beaches in nearby Middletown.

Psst! I have a detailed guide on planning a Newport, RI day trip , which includes top things to do!

10. Block Island, RI

North Lighthouse on Block Island is one of the reasons this is one of the best places to visit in New England.

Off the coast of Narragansett in Rhode Island is the beautiful little Block Island. This is one that can often get over-shadowed by Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, but I really love exploring this little beautiful destination.

The island is very small, which either makes it easy to see in a day, or offers a relaxing vacation if you have more time to spend here. Built around the main town that has cute shops and dining options, you’ll also find gorgeous beaches that are free to visit, great hiking trails, lots of impressive coastal scenery, awesome sunsets, lighthouses, and even the Block Island National Wildlife Refuge .

Be sure to swing by Mansion Beach during your Block Island day trip, even if you just walk along the shore.

My favorite places to see on the island are the Clay Head Trail, Mansion Beach, lunch at The Oar overlooking the water, the Mohegan Bluffs, and North Lighthouse.

Psst! I have a detailed guide on taking a Block Island day trip , if you’re looking for more information 😉

11. Westerly & Watch Hill, RI

The viewpoint at the top of the entrance to Napatree Point Beach in Watch Hill, RI.

Lastly for Rhode Island, it’s hard to not include Westerly and its village of Watch Hill on this list. While it’s one of the most expensive and exclusive places to visit along New England’s coast, it makes for a gorgeous vacation if you have the budget for one of the hotels in the area. Or, even a fun day trip!

In my opinion, this is where you’ll find the best beaches in Rhode Island outside of Block Island, and combine that with cute downtowns and luxury hotels, and you’ve got a recipe for a wonderful New England beach vacation. In fact, Taylor Swift loved it so much, she bought a mansion in Watch Hill, so I’m definitely not the only one who loves it here!

A view of the outside of the famous Ocean House luxury resort in Watch Hill, RI, which is one of the best places to visit in New England.

My favorite beaches in Westerly are Misquamicut State Beach, which is the easier one to visit, and Napatree Point in Watch Hill, which has more limited parking. And if your budget allows, definitely book a room at the famous Ocean House resort in Watch Hill, which has its own private beach, incredible rooms, and is home to one of the world’s best waterfront restaurants, as chosen by CNN Traveler .

I also recommend you visit both downtowns in Watch Hill and Westerly, and head over to Grey Sail Brewing for a unique atmosphere and local craft beers.

Psst! I have a detailed guide on the best things to do in Westerly and Watch Hill, RI , if you’re looking for more ideas 😉

12. Boston, MA

An aerial view of the Boston skyline from the harbor at sunset.

New England’s largest city is also one of the top places to visit when exploring the area, and for so many wonderful reasons: the history, the charming character, beautiful parks, waterfront scenery, amazing hotels, and incredible food are just a few!

Even though I’m not a big city person, it’s hard to deny what an amazing destination Boston is, and the best part is that it feels very New England . There’s lots of historic architecture to enjoy, and the quaint neighborhoods with cobblestone streets just add to the ambience.

Acorn Street in Boston, which is one of the best places to visit in New England for history.

During your visit, I highly recommend visiting the Public Gardens (which were the first in the U.S.!), walking around Beacon Hill (my favorite neighborhood), exploring the Freedom Trail, walking the Charles River Esplanade, and making reservations at some of the top-rated restaurants.

I have a few guides all about Boston, including:

  • Boston In The Fall
  • Best Boston Food Tours
  • Best Boston Hotels Near The Aquarium

13. Rockport, MA

View of Motif 1 fishing shack in Rockport, MA's harbor.

Heading north of Boston, the next few places will all be located along the Massachusetts North Shore, which is one of my favorite places in New England to visit. The charming fishing town of Rockport is one you should definitely have on your radar.

Rockport is small, but what it lacks in size, it makes up in picturesque and unique scenery. Home to Motif 1, which many say is the most painted building in the country (some say the world), this red fishing shack stands guard over the town in the harbor, and is one of the most idyllic New England moments to photograph.

Along the harbor, you’ll find Bearskin Neck, which sounds a bit alarming 😂, but it’s really just a street where you’ll find the colorful storefronts and art galleries – all of which are independently owned, and feature all kinds of unique pieces.

Outside of the main town area, you can also admire the town’s impressive rock quarry landscapes, and one of the best places to do that is at Halibut Point State Park.

Psst! I have a detailed guide on the best things to do in Rockport, MA , if you’re looking for more ideas 😉

14. Crane Estate & Crane Beach, MA

Me at Crane Beach in Ipswich, MA in November.

There are quite a few mansions and castles around New England, and the Crane Estate is one of my absolute favorites. Located along the North Shore in Ipswich, this Tutor-revival mansion was built in 1928, and sits on 2,100 acres of beautifully manicured lawns.

The grounds and mansion are open to the public, and most people choose to visit the grounds to explore the gardens and walking trails around the property. However, the interior of the mansion is open for guided tours at certain times throughout the year, too, but it does require the purchase of a separate ticket.

In addition to the immensely impressive grounds, the Crane estate is also home to Crane Beach, which I think is the most beautiful beach on the North Shore. This 4-mile long sandy beach seems to stretch on forever, and there are also over 5 miles of scenic trails to enjoy here.

15. Newburyport, MA

The shops in Market Square are one of the best things to see in Newburyport!

A lesser-visited destination along the North Shore is Newburyport, and here, you’ll find an incredibly charming downtown, beaches and parks on Plum Island, and some of the best shopping in New England. When I first visited Newburyport, I immediately fell in love with it, and I’m so surprised more people don’t recommend visiting.

The town center of Newburyport sits along the Merrimack River, and you’ll find a beautiful waterfront park where you can enjoy the views. From there, you’re steps away from town center and all the incredible shops, most of which are independently owned. I always describe the scenery as a movie set, because everything from the brick-lined streets to the beautiful window displays in the shops just feels so cozy and charming.

A view of the waterfront park in Newburyport, MA, which is one of the best places to visit in New England.

From Newburyport, you can also head out on a whale watch to Stellwagan Bank (although, sometimes from here, they cruise out to Jeffreys Ledge, depending on what the experts think is the best option that day).

Psst! I have a detailed guide on the best things to do in Newburyport, MA , if you’re looking for more ideas 😉

16. Salem, MA

The famous Witch House in October, which is the best time to visit Salem, MA for Halloween fun.

Known as one of the top Halloween towns in the entire U.S., Salem is undoubtedly a popular fall destination in New England, and rightfully so. With its Haunted Happenings event that takes place all throughout October, as well as being home to several Hocus Pocus filming locations, and it’s very haunted past, it checks all the boxes for a perfect spooky, fall getaway.

However, Salem is incredible year-round, too! While the witch trial attractions and haunted tours are definitely worthy of your time, the town is also filled with gorgeous and historic New England architecture, picturesque streets, fantastic museums, lighthouses, and tons of charm.

Winter Island Lighthouse in Salem, MA.

One off-the-beaten-path location in Salem I love to share with people is Winter Island Park, which has a cute little lighthouse and some trails to enjoy. During your visit to Salem, be sure to also see the House of Seven Gables, where Nathaniel Hawthorne was born (and where he pulled inspiration from when he wrote the book of the same name), explore the Peabody Essex Museum, and enjoy the views from the Salem Maritime National Historic Site.

Oh, and if you can squeeze in a lobster martini from the Lobster Shanty, I definitely recommend that, too 😉

Psst! I have some extra guides on Salem, including the best time to visit Salem, MA , and how to plan a day trip to Salem!

17. The Berkshires, MA

A view of the mountain ranges in The Berkshires at sunset, taken in early fall just as the leaves began to turn.

Located in the northwest corner of the state, The Berkshires is a region comprised of 30 towns, mountain ranges, and beautiful rural scenery. It’s also home to fantastic museums, amazing dining options, cozy inns, and endless outdoor activities, making this a wonderful region to see on your trip to connect with nature. I especially love it in the fall season to enjoy all the incredible foliage color.

One of the most famous towns in The Berkshires is Stockbridge, which was put on the map when artist Normal Rockwell painted his Stockbridge Main Street at Christmas piece. And while a few things have changed since then, most of Main Street feels very much the same, so you can feel as though you’re stepping into a real-life painting during your visit.

Some of my favorite things to do in this region are drive the auto road (or hike! I’ve done both) to the top of Mount Greylock, drive the scenic Mohawk Trail, visit the incredible farm stands, explore the beautiful Naumkeag Estate (which often puts on seasonal events like a pumpkin display in the fall), and meander through the charming towns like Lenox and Great Barrington.

18. Kennebunkport, ME

Shopping in Dock Square in Kennebunkport, Maine.

Moving into Maine, Kennebunkport is one of the best places in New England to visit to enjoy picturesque coastal scenery, beaches, and a charming downtown. Kennebunkport has long been a big vacation spot for New Englanders, but President Bush made it even more famous with his summer vacation house and compound, which is still there for you to admire from a distance.

I’ve been to Kennebunkport more times than I can count, and it just never disappoints. Built around Dock Square, the main part of town, you’ll find colorful store fronts, idyllic waterfront scenery, and beautiful side streets filled with traditional colonial houses.

A view of a beach shack on Cape Porpoise in Kennebunkport, Maine, which is one of the best places to see in New England.

If you venture a bit outside of town center, you’ll find the beaches, as well as a scenic, coastal walking trail called Parsons Way. There’s also the option to visit Cape Porpoise, which is packed with postcard-worthy moments at every turn, as well as one of the best places to get a lobster dinner – Langsford Road Lobster & Fish House.

One of the best parts of Kennebunkport, too, is that it had tons of fantastic hotel options, including historic colonial homes-turned-cozy-inns, luxury resorts, cottages, beach resorts, and upscale escapes in the woods.

19. Ogunquit, ME

An aerial view of Ogunquit Beach in Maine at sunset.

Very close to Kennebunkport is another fantastic coastal town – Ogunquit. This town is known for having one of the best beaches in Maine, but it’s also home to a very charming downtown, and gorgeous scenery. My very first visit to Ogunquit made me fall immediately in love with it, and because it offers so much to do, it’s definitely one of the best places to visit in New England. I keep going back because I love it that much.

The star of the show here is definitely the beach, and one of the best features of the beach is that it’s walkable for most places in town. Since Ogunquit is rather small, it makes getting around on foot very easy, and therefore, offers a truly relaxing vacation.

My absolute favorite thing to do in Ogunquit, and even all of New England, is the Marginal Way pedestrian coastal walk. This path hugs the coastline and stretches for over a mile one-way, and connects Ogunquit town center with a cute little harbor called Perkins Cove. I also love to meander through the shops downtown, visit the art galleries, and spend most of my time at the gorgeous beach.

Psst! I have a detailed guide on visiting Ogunquit, Maine , if you’re looking for more information 😉

20. Lubec, ME

Me at West Quoddy Lighthouse in Lubec, Maine, which is such a fantastic destination in New England to experience.

Located in the northeastern most corner of Maine, Lubec is such an underrated destination in New England. This small, authentic fishing village is just minutes from the Canadian border, and offers incredible hiking and nature trails, an awesome lighthouse, beautiful coastal scenery, and easy access to Campobello Island, where you can find President Franklin Roosevelt Eleanor’s summer home (as well as a lighthouse and some beaches).

Lubec is also where you can see the very first sunrise in the country, but only at certain times of the year (usually in mid to late March, and mid to late September).

Now, Lubec isn’t for everyone. The town is very small, and there’s not a ton to do, but it’s one of my favorite places in New England to visit to get away from everyday life, and not plan to do a whole lot. That said, I find it incredibly charming, and I always get excited to visit.

My favorite things to do here are visit West Quoddy Head State Park to see the lighthouse, tackle the scenic coastal trails, visit the brewery, and take afternoon excursions to Campobello Island.

Psst! I have an entire guide on visiting Lubec, Maine , if you’re looking for more info and tips 😉

21. Boothbay Harbor, ME

Views from the footbridge, which is one of the best things to see and do in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, and one of the reasons it makes for a wonderful day trip in New England.

Along Maine’s Midcoast region is the wonderful town of Boothbay Harbor, and as the name suggests, it’s built around a beautiful harbor, making this an ideal destination to enjoy the rugged coastline Maine is known for.

Boothbay Harbor is also very small, so the downtown is entirely walkable, making it a great place for a relaxing getaway. The colorful storefronts that line the streets downtown add to the overall charm, and both sides of the harbor are connected by a footbridge, which just makes it even more picturesque.

I always love to recommend that you get out on the water as much as you can when you visit Boothbay to enjoy the surrounding natural beauty, and there are tons of wonderful tours you can take here, including puffin tours, sailing cruises, and lighthouse excursions.

Lastly, Boothbay Harbor is minutes away from the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, which is such a treat to visit.

Psst! I have an entire guide on the best things to do in Boothbay Harbor, Maine , if you need more ideas!

22. Camden, ME

A view of Camden Maine's harbor in the fall season.

Also along Maine’s Midcoast is gorgeous Camden, and this town almost always ranks at the top of every list of the best places to visit in New England, and the hype is justified. Much like Boothbay Harbor, Camden is built around the harbor, creating an idyllic coastal escape, and you’ll find a wonderful downtown with great shops and restaurants, cozy places to stay, and opportunities for amazing sailing tours.

The tall sailboats docked in Camden, Maine's harbor at sunrise.

Nearby is also Camden Hills State Park, and one of the best things to do is drive up the auto road, or hike to the top of Mount Battie, and enjoy a birds-eye view of the harbor.

23. Portland, ME

Portland Head Light is the oldest lighthouse in Maine, and one of the best to see on your road trip. It's also one of the best things to do in New England!

Portland is another one of my favorites cities in New England, and much of that has to do with the lighthouses. In fact, it’s home to one of the most photographed lighthouses in the northeast – Portland Head Lighthouse. Located in South Portland, just a few minutes from downtown, you’ll find this incredible lighthouse park with trails that offer different viewpoints of the lighthouse, and stunning, dramatic coastline to admire.

Nearby are also two smaller lighthouses that are worth visiting – Spring Point Ledge Light, and Bug Light.

That said, Portland is so much more than its lighthouses. Once an old port city (as the name suggests!), part of the city has maintained its charm and authenticity, and you’ll find lots of fishing boats and lobster traps in picturesque alleyways in the Old Port district.

But Portland is also an incredible culinary destination, and there are so many up and coming chefs and restaurants making names for themselves here, too. Taking a food tour is a great way to introduce yourself to the city, and don’t forget to get some of the famous donuts, too!

24. St. George Peninsula, ME

At Marshall Point Lighthouse in Port Clyde, Maine, which is one of the most beautiful places to see in New England.

An under-the-radar destination in Maine, the St. George peninsula is a stunningly beautiful area of the state. While it does have one famous landmark, Marshall Point Lighthouse, many people overlook the rest of it, but it’s actually a wonderful place for a getaway, and to explore. Especially if you’re looking to get off the beaten path, and enjoy a quieter side of Maine.

Marshall Point Lighthouse is one of the top things to see in this area, and you don’t want to miss it. Located at the very end of the peninsula, the lighthouse was featured in the movie Forrest Gump , and it’s one of my favorites in the region.

Driving around the area, you’ll see fishing boats bobbing in the water backdropped by pine-tree covered islands, quaint seafood shacks, and quiet town centers. But if you’re looking for more things to do, Rockland and Camden are just a short drive away, as is the beautiful Owls Head State Park and lighthouse.

25. The White Mountains In New Hampshire

On the Frankenstein Cliff Trail in the White Mountains during fall foliage season.

One of the absolute best places to visit in New England for fall foliage is the White Mountains region, but because of its impressive scenery, it truly is wonderful year-round. Home to the White Mountains National Forest, incredible hiking, fun attractions, and cute little towns, it’s easy to see why so many people visit each year. It’s also where you can find New England’s highest peak – Mount Washington.

During your visit, you’ll definitely want to cruise along the Kancamagus Highway, which is known as being one of the most scenic drives in New England – and I couldn’t agree more. This is especially beautiful in the fall, but the road goes through the heart of the White Mountains forest, making the views during the drive memorable.

Some other wonderful things to do in the area are visit the cute town of Littleton, hike the Artist Bluff Trail, visit Flume Gorge, ride the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway, and also take a ride on The Cog to the top of Mount Washington for an incredibly unique experience.

26. Portsmouth, NH

View of downtown Portsmouth, NH from Pierce Island in the fall.

In southern New Hampshire, Portsmouth is one of the most charming places to see in New England. While the White Mountains have more of a cabin/alpine atmosphere, the New England charm is alive and well in Portsmouth!

This coastal city also feels more like a quaint town, and most of it is very walkable. Streets are lined with traditional New England colonial architecture, the downtown area is filled with amazing shops and picturesque streets, and there are tons of wonderful restaurants to choose from.

I like to start my trips to Portsmouth with a walk along the waterfront at Prescott Park, and be sure to head over to Pierce Island for awesome views of the city. Then, walk over to the Strawbery Banke museum to see history come to life (open seasonally), and admire all the historic houses. Finally, head over to Market Square downtown, where you’ll find all the shops and restaurants, and be sure to pick up a cup of coffee and a pastry from Elephantine Bakery in Commercial Alley!

27. Woodstock, VT

Middle covered bridge in Woodstock, VT is one of the best sites to see when visiting.

It’s continually named the prettiest town in Vermont, and I have to agree. Woodstock is where you want to go in Vermont to feel like you’re in a Hallmark movie because it has all the ingredients: a town green, covered bridges, independent shops, idyllic side streets, and cozy places to eat. It really does live up to all the hype!

On the outskirts of town, you’ll also find postcard-worthy rural landscapes, as well as the gorgeous Billings Farm & Museum, and Sugarbush Farms.

Psst! I have an entire guide on the best things to do in Woodstock, VT , if you need more ideas!

28. Stowe, VT

An aerial view of the fall foliage surrounding Stowe, VT's village and Main Street.

A very close second when it comes to my favorite places in Vermont is Stowe, which is known as being a top town for fall foliage, and skiing in the winter. This is one of the most popular places to visit in Vermont, but I really do think it’s worth braving the crowds for because the scenery really is that beautiful.

Stowe is home to Vermont’s highest peak, Mount Mansfield, and is also surrounded by mountain ranges. In the fall during peak foliage season, seeing the mountains dripping in autumnal color is really something special.

One of the best things to do in Stowe, VT any time of the year is stroll down the quaint main Street.

But the actual town itself is incredibly charming, and you’ll find covered bridges, a quaint Main Street with great shops and country stores, scenic walking trails, and awesome hiking and nature walks nearby at Smugglers Notch.

Psst! I have an entire guide on the best things to do in Stowe, VT if you need more information!

29. Lake Willoughby, Vermont

View of the mountains around Lake Willoughby from South Beach in the fall season.

An under-the-radar destination in Vermont in Lake Willoughby, which offers incredible scenery of the surrounding mountains, and is another impressive fall foliage destination. Located in the Northeast Kingdom of the state, the actual lake itself is gorgeous, and stretches for over 2 square miles.

For a quiet getaway in Vermont, it’s really hart to beat. The main town along the lake, Westmore, offers tons of cabins to rent for a relaxing vacation, and the area also has awesome hiking nearby in Willoughby State Forest that offers fantastic views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

But even if you visit just for the day, the drive around the lake is really amazing, and there are some fun places to eat nearby, including The Gap Pub and the Parker Pie Company.

30. Mystic, CT

A view of Mystic's downtown from the river at sunset.

Heading into Connecticut, Mystic is such a wonderful place to visit in New England! Most people know it from movies like Mystic Pizza and Mystic River , but it has so much to offer, making it worthy destination to experience when you visit the area.

Built around the actual Mystic River, the small town offers beautiful waterfront scenery as you explore. It’s also home to a charming Main Street for shopping and dining, and a cute little shopping village called Olde Mistick Village, where you can find all kinds of unique stores and tons of charm.

Some of the bigger attractions in Mystic, like the Mystic Seaport Museum and the Mystic Aquarium, add to the appeal, too. In fact, the Mystic Seaport Museum is the largest maritimes museum in the U.S., and is mostly an outdoor exhibit along the river. It features historic tall ships that you can climb into before walking through an authentic New England maritimes village from the 19th century.

Inside the Mystic Seaport Museum's 19th century maritimes village.

Driving a bit outside of town, you can also visit part of the Connecticut wine trail in Stonington, which includes Saltwater Farm Vineyard, and Stonington Vineyard.

Psst! I have an entire guide on the best things to do in Mystic, CT , if you need more ideas!

31. Litchfield Hills, CT

The Litchfield Hills in CT are some of the most beautiful countryside landscapes, and a drive through this region is one of the best things to do in New England in the fall.

Last on my list is perfect for any Gilmore Girls fans out there because it’s the region that Amy Sherman-Palladino based Stars Hollow on. But even if you have no idea what I’m talking about, the Litchfield Hills region of the Connecticut countryside is filled with idyllic rural scenery, beautiful drives, state parks, and lots of quaint, picturesque towns.

Towns in this region like Kent, Litchfield, and New Milford all feel like they could have inspired Stars Hollow, but many claim the beloved TV show town was modeled after Washington Depot (which oddly enough, isn’t my favorite town in the region!). You’ll find cozy cafés, bookshops, town greens with gazebos, and lovely scenery at every turn.

This region is also small and can easily be visited in a weekend, and if you’re ambitious, a day. The drive from one town to the next is scenic, and with stops to make on the way at places like Kent Falls State Park, Lover’s Leap Bridge, and Mount Tom, it’s not hard to see why someone would have based an entire show on this area.

Visiting New England FAQ

At the start of the Bluff Walk in 'Sconset, Nantucket.

Is New England Worth Visiting?

As I’m sure you’ve gathered from this list, there are so many incredibly picturesque places to see in New England, which very much makes it worth visiting.

Between exciting cities, historic towns, quaint fishing villages, Acadia National Park, lighthouses, and charming destinations, there’s truly something for everyone, and there’s a reason why this region is a bucket list place for lots of people.

What’s The Best Way To Get Around New England?

Unless you just plan to visit a big city, you really need to have a car to explore New England.

I wish the U.S. in general had a better transportation infrastructure, but it just doesn’t, and New England is no exception. Getting to a lot of these places requires a car, but this will allow you the most freedom to stick to your own schedule.

What’s The Best Airport To Fly Into In New England?

Boston Logan is the best airport for most people, especially if you’re flying in internationally. This airport is the biggest in New England, and usually offers the cheapest flights, most options, and is centrally-located to many destinations in the region.

There are also some smaller airports around New England that may work best for you, including Portland, Providence, and Portsmouth. However, Boston Logan is usually the best option.

What’s The Best Season To Visit New England?

The great thing about New England is that all four seasons offer a different vibe, so this really depends on what kind of trip you’re hoping for. Here’s a very general breakdown for you:

→ The first two weeks of October for fall foliage.

→ July and August for a coastal or beach trip (but this is peak season for these areas, so prices and crowds will be at their highest). This is when you’ll get the best weather, and all seasonal businesses along the coast will be open.

→ June and September for shoulder season along the coast. You’ll experience fewer crowds, but the weather is generally still very nice.

→ May is a great option if you’re looking for a cheaper and less crowded time to visit, and don’t mind weather that’s a bit rainy.

→ January and February for a winter wonderland or ski vacation.

I do have a very detailed post on the best time to visit New England , if you’re looking for more info 😉

Is New England Expensive?

Unfortunately, yes. This area tends to be more expensive than many other parts of the U.S., so expect to pay a bit more for everything, including hotels, tours, and food. “Budget-friendly” will also likely run a bit more than average, too. However, you can still cut costs by staying in motels with efficiency kitchens to prepare your own meals, camping, or visiting at a cheap time, like April.

Planning A New England Road Trip

Oh boy, do I have some great suggestions for you! I’ve done a lot of road trips around this region, and continue to do them because it’s one of my favorite ways to explore. My top road trips I’ve ever done are a Boston to Bar Harbor, Maine road trip, as well as a beautiful fall foliage road trip.

I’ve created a few different road trip itineraries for this website, which you can find here:

My Top Tips For Visiting New England

Doubling Point light is a bit more off-the-beat-path, but absolutely worth seeing.

→ Know that weather can change … a lot 😂 New England is known for moody weather, and while it’s not quite as bad as places like Iceland or Scotland, it does change a lot. July and August are known as the driest months, but rain is still likely at least a few days of each summer month. And the spring and fall season can bring a wide variety of weather, so definitely check the forecast a few days before your trip.

→ The highways have paid tolls . If you’re planning a road trip, or even a longer drive to a different location, it’s good to know you’ll have to pay tolls on many of the highways. However, they’ve all recently switched over to electronic, contactless tolling. If you’re renting a car, or are driving in from out of state, you’ll get a bill in the mail to pay, so you don’t need to worry about stopping to pay tolls each time.

→ Expect a lot of crowds and book well in advance if you visit during peak season . Hotels and tours fill up months in advance if you plan a visit during a peak time, so you’ll want to book as soon as you can. For example, the first two weeks in October in New Hampshire, Vermont and The Berkshires, or in July and August on Cape Cod.

→ You can dress casually for the most part . Despite its reputation for being upscale and preppy, most people dress very casually in New England. Unless you plan to go out to eat at a nicer place, you don’t really need to dress up.

→ Have some cash on you, depending on where you go . Most places will take cards, but a surprising number of smaller seafood shacks and ice cream places will still be cash only. Many will have an ATM on-site if that’s the case, but to avoid pricey fees, it’s good to just have some cash on you.

Best Places to Visit in New England: Vermont

Burlington, vermont.

an image of an empty shopping street on a sunny day. colorful banners cross over the blue sky and a long bricked walkway leads to a distant church

One of the best places to visit in New England is Burlington, Vermont, a place I lived for several years!

Do you like the outdoors, craft beer, and progressive-minded folk? You will love the hip city of Burlington and the many fun things to do here . Set on the shores of Lake Champlain, Burlington has a small-town vibe but plenty going on.

The greater Burlington area is a must-visit mecca for foodies and craft beer lovers . There are tons of breweries around here and an explosion of farm-to-table cuisine that is well worth the trip. Hard cider is making a strong showing in New England , too, and Foam Brewers is a great place to try it in Burlington. They’re located near the Lake Champlain waterfront, making it a great place to be on a summer afternoon.

A placard reading

From cool coffee shops to great places to stay to fun, free things to see and do , Burlington is one of the best places for a New England vacation!

Church Street Marketplace is one of the most popular places to go in Burlington, with great shopping, restaurants, and a whole lotta entertainment, both on the streets and in the businesses surrounding.

The lake is the focus of much of the Burlington’s outdoor activities. The Burlington Bike Path skirts the edges for several miles, providing an ideal route for a bike ride or a run. There’s lots of great hiking nearby , too.

Getting out on the water is a must, whether you want to try sailing, stand up paddle boarding or kayaking. You can also hop aboard one of the bigger boats, the scenic ferries. These will take you across to the other side (NY state) or around for a scenic cruise of this miniature “Great” lake. Check out some of the best ways to get out on Lake Champlain here!

Stowe, Vermont

Aerial view of the mountains with fall leaves and a white church with steeple in the midst of them at a New England vacation destination

Stowe, Vermont, renowned as a skiing paradise, is a year-round New England gem. In winter, the town truly shines.

Stowe Mountain Resort beckons with top-tier skiing and snowboarding, while the town, illuminated with holiday lights, offers a warm welcome with its quaint streets. Cozy up in local cafes or glide across the Stowe Ice Rink.

For a unique experience, embrace the Austrian charm of the Trapp Family Lodge, famous for its connections to “The Sound of Music.” I stayed here myself last spring and absolutely adored its classic, rustic vibe.

Autumn in Stowe is equally enchanting. The area boasts some of the most spectacular fall foliage, creating a vivid backdrop for seasonal activities.

A short drive to Waterbury brings you to the Cold Hollow Cider Mill, one of my favorite New England places to visit for its renowned apple cider donuts and a glimpse into traditional cider-making processes.

Stowe has miles of fantastic hiking trails, and in fall, the views are particularly exquisite. Not into hiking? View the colors from above via the Stowe Gondola Skyride, which will carry you to the top of Mount Mansfield, Vermont’s highest peak.

Woodstock, Vermont

Another place to visit in New England I recommend is the town of Woodstock, VT. This scenic New England destination is a breath of fresh air and absolutely one of my favorite New England towns to visit.

Its picturesque downtown area, complete with its own historic covered bridge, captures the region’s essence. Explore the unique shops and cozy cafes, all set within historic buildings, and each offering a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

The Billings Farm & Museum is another highlight, showcasing Vermont’s agricultural history in an engaging way. You can meet the cows and see how an actual working farm is run. My little family had a blast here!

For nature enthusiasts, the stunning views at Quechee Gorge – Vermont’s ‘Little Grand Canyon’ – are essential. This spot offers impressive vistas and is perfect for photography and nature exploration.

Annually, thousands visit Woodstock to enjoy its seasonal beauty, from summer’s lush greenery to autumn’s foliage. It’s also known as a fabulous Christmas town , with its Victorian-style Wassail Weekend taking center stage.

Best Places to Visit in New England: New Hampshire

Portsmouth, new hampshire.

New Hampshire has a very small stretch of coastline and Portsmouth is a small city located here. Portsmouth is very historic, which is great for visitors to New England.  Settled in 1623, it is actually the third oldest city in the nation, and one of my favorite places to visit.

To explore some of this history, check out Strawbery Banke, an outdoor history museum with more than 30 restored buildings built between the 17th and 19th centuries. This is a living history museum, too, with actors portraying historic residents of the town and what life may have been like.

In Portsmouth, you can also wander along the waterfront. For shopping and dining (Portsmouth has a very lively food scene) Market Square is the center of things. There are some pretty cool bars and breweries in Portsmouth, too!

North Conway, New Hampshire

New Hampshire’s White Mountains are impressive, exciting, and draw thousands of outdoorsy folk each year. These mountains, the tallest in New England, offer spectacular hiking and more.

North Conway is one of my favorite places for a New England vacation , providing the perfect gateway to the attractions of the White Mountain National Forest.

Conway is a mountain town providing a great mix of shopping, restaurants , and outdoor activities. The Saco River runs nearby, so Conway is a good jumping-off point for tubing or paddling in the river, with lots of cool places to stay .

Pop up to the towns of Bartlett and Jackson if you want to head even more into the mountains. Both are very nice areas with lots to do and see. Near Bartlett you can stop by Diana’s Baths, a beautiful area of cascading waterfalls and gentle pools. On a hot summer’s day, it’s the perfect place to cool off.

Got extra time in NH? Check out the town of Lincoln, too.

Plymouth, Massachusetts

Of course, you’ll want to have America’s Hometown on your list of places to visit in New England!

One of the most charming historic towns in the region, Plymouth is full of historical sites like Plymouth Rock and Mayflower II , a scale replica of the historic vessel that carried the Pilgrims across the sea in 1620!

Also in Plymouth are a variety of fantastic restaurants and places to stay, including Mirbeau Inn and Spa. History, culture, and a little spa-cation? Why not?

The Lakes Region, New Hampshire

If you’re looking for a place to spend summer in New England , we can’t recommend enough the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. Here you’ll find lakes on lakes on lakes.

In the summertime, these alluring bodies of water are refreshing and calm. They are perfect for swimming with family and friends, boating, or even as a backdrop to your barbecue.

The Lakes Region of NH includes the area surrounding Lake Winnipesaukee , Winnisquam Lake, Squam Lake, and Newfound Lake, among other smaller lakes and ponds (there are 273 in total!).

Some of the towns not to miss include adorable Meredith (right on Lake Winnipesaukee), fun Laconia, and pretty Center Harbor.

Best Places to Visit in New England: Massachusetts

Martha’s vineyard, massachusetts.

A body of water with a lighthouse and houses in the distance in New England

This island off the coast of Massachusetts is one of the most beautiful New England spots, especially for a summer trip.

Martha’s Vineyard is a fun getaway . While you’re not coming here for the nightlife, you’re coming here for relaxation and luxury (and delicious restaurants, beautiful inns and hotels, and cool vacation rentals !) Oak Bluffs is an especially cool town to explore.

One of the best things to do on the island is simply to rent a bike and go for a ride. Explore lighthouses as well as the six towns that make up the island. Shopping and art are also things you’ll find on Martha’s Vineyard in abundance.

The Berkshires, Massachusetts

In Western Massachusetts is the region known as the Berkshires. This area is worlds away from Boston, but it’s not very far as the crow flies. If you’re looking for a bit of country living in MA, this is the region to visit.

This area is a popular destination for travelers, especially in the warmer months.

Culture abounds in the Berkshires, from spots like Mass MoCA and other museums to venue Tanglewood , where you can enjoy concerts from leading symphonies and folk artists like James Taylor to theatre productions put on by the well-known, professional Shakespeare & Company .

A tree with fall leaves next to a yellow two-story house in New England

In addition to culture, you will find plenty of history. In Lenox, visit the Ventfort Hall Mansion and Gilded Age Museum , an 1890s home that’s open for tours. If you have literary interest, you may also wish to stop by The Mount , Edith Wharton’s turn-of-the-century estate.

There are many opportunities for outdoor adventuring in the Berkshires. Plenty of hiking trails snake the region, bike routes, and even some ski resorts, plus plenty of cool vacation rentals , cute cabins , and great places to eat .

It’s a great place to visit in the winter , too!

Boston, Massachusetts

Aerial view of tall buildings in a vacation destination in New England

Some of the best New England vacations start in Boston, and many stay there! It’s one of my favorite places for a wonderful New England vacay.

Boston has so much to do for locals and visitors alike. Sports fans, history lovers, culture snobs? Whatever your pleasure, Boston has a site, walking tour, attraction, or event you’ll be psyched about.

Walking the Freedom Trail is a Boston bucket list item , whether you’re a history buff or not. This 2.5-mile path takes you past 16 historic sites, each a chapter in the story of America’s fight for independence, and it’s a super easy walk.

As you walk the trail, you’ll encounter iconic colonial sites like Boston Common, the Paul Revere House, Old North Church, and Bunker Hill Monument.

Nantucket, Massachusetts

Nantucket, an idyllic island off the coast of Massachusetts, stands as one of New England’s premier vacation destinations. Known for its pristine beaches, Nantucket offers a serene escape with its vast stretches of sand and crystal-clear waters, perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and sailing. The island’s rich history is woven into the cobbled streets of Nantucket Town, where visitors can explore unique museums, charming boutiques, and dine in exquisite seafood restaurants.

The iconic Brant Point Lighthouse provides a picturesque backdrop for sunset viewing. Nantucket’s natural beauty extends beyond its beaches to the conservation lands, offering miles of biking and hiking trails. With its blend of natural splendor, historical charm, and a relaxed, upscale atmosphere, Nantucket truly captures the essence of a quintessential New England retreat!

While Nantucket is a lovely New England summer destination, it has its off season charm, too! Consider a winter trip to Nantucket , a unique experience which gives you the opportunity to have one of New England’s most popular islands feel like it’s all yours.

Salem, Massachusetts

A woman stands in front of a Hocus Pocus filming site in Salem, Massachusetts

Salem is one of my all time favorite New England vacation destinations, for many reasons! For one, I’m a child of the 90s and thus, Hocus Pocus was a part of my early Halloween experience. Being able to explore the filming sites and see places in person for Halloween is a BLAST.

Secondly, it’s just a very cool seaside town to visit. There are a ton of excellent restaurants , neat shops, informative tours (including spooky ghost tours !), historical sites, and more.

I recommend everyone add Salem MA to their New England bucket list!

Best Places to Visit in New England: Maine

Acadia national park, maine.

Maine is home to some of the best vacation spots in New England and Acadia has to be near the top of that list. Acadia National Park is unlike any other part of New England. Midcoast Maine

Many boats in a harbor with buildings in the background in a popular New England getaway spot

One of the best New England vacation destinations has to be the coast of Maine. But with hundreds of miles of coastline, where do you start? We recommend Maine’s Midcoast.

Generally speaking, this region runs from Brunswick (just north of Portland) up to around Belfast, just south of Mt. Desert Island. This whole area is beautiful and, as you can imagine, very coastal-focused.

In addition to museums, art, history, and food, MidCoast Maine is home to many exciting events and festivals.

As Visit Maine says: “Speaking of festivals, catch Weinerfest (that’s all things Dachshund) in Belfast, the  Maine Lobster Festival  in Rockland , and Damariscotta’s  Pumpkinfest . And let the good times and big cheese roll at the  Highland Games & Scottish Festival in Topsham.”

Most of all, you’ll want to get out on the water. Our favorite way is to head out on an overnight, multi-day schooner adventure ; it’s a very unique New England vacation idea!

Next up is Mystic, Connecticut: one of the best vacation spots in New England. This is a classic New England seaside destination, known for its marine trade legacy and shipbuilding. Today it is a charming waterfront village on the Mystic River. Prior to its fame from the 1988 film “Mystic Pizza,” the Mystic region was renowned for constructing wooden clipper ships. The Mystic Seaport Museum, a top maritime museum in the nation, is the place to go to learn more about this. Here you can discover more about New England’s maritime history, see historic ships, enjoy interactive exhibits, and wander through the recreated 19th-century village and historical trade shops.

Downtown Mystic features quaint buildings and the 1922 Mystic River Bascule Bridge, which raises every hour in the summer months to allow boats to pass beneath. You can visit boutique shops, restaurants, and the original Mystic Pizza shop.

That’s not all there is to do in Mystic either . The Mystic Aquarium is a must; it’s the only New England aquarium with beluga whales (my personal favorite) as well as just one of two aquariums in the U.S. featuring Steller sea lions.

Mystic is also just a hop, skip, and jump from other Connecticut attractions. It’s a very small state, after all! Plus, you’ll find plenty of great places to eat and stay in this cool coastal New England vacation destination.

Whether you’re interested in historical tours in vibrant cities or relaxing on sandy beaches in quaint seaside towns, these New England places to visit have all that and more!

20 Best Weekend Getaways in New England

From charming small towns to mountain escapes, these are the best places in New England for a weekend trip.

Anne Olivia Bauso is a travel writer and hotel expert based in New York City. She has written hundreds of hotel reviews, from 5-star Ritz-Carlton properties to treehouse eco-resorts in the jungle.

new england travel in november

With prettier-than-a-picture countrysides, cliff-lined coasts under the watchful beams of centuries-old lighthouses, and countless small towns to stumble upon, New England is a region that merits a lifetime of getaways, weekend or otherwise. Whether you’re looking for a quick escape from the city or a romantic trip, here are 20 of the best weekend getaways in New England.

Block Island, Rhode Island

wakr10/Getty Images

With its towering bluffs, plains filled with native shrubs, and grand Victorian-style hotel , Block Island looks like it could really be in England. The cedar-shingled saltbox houses are what clue you back to the fact that we’re in New England, not some wind-swept corner of the U.K. Located 13 miles off the coast of Rhode Island, this quintessential seaside getaway is just as much about cruising down country lanes and walking through open heathland as it is visiting the beach.

Mad River Valley, Vermont

capecodphoto/Getty Images

Below the famous Sugarbush and Mad River Glen ski areas, the Mad River Valley is a particularly pretty nook of Vermont. And that’s on top of a surprisingly glam history (Sugarbush was once dubbed “Mascara Mountain” by Vogue due to all the fashionable model types frequenting its slopes). The skiing’s still good around these parts, but there’s also fun off-the-slopes stuff like mountain biking, farm stand shopping, and summer concerts.

Nantucket, Massachusetts

Atlantide Phototravel/Getty Images

Reverence for this 50-square-mile fleck off the coast of Massachusetts runs deep, especially when it comes to summer getaways. But forget the cars and chain restaurants that clog your typical beach scene. Instead, hop on a bike or island shuttle to visit historic lighthouses (the still-in-use Brant Point dates back to 1746!), grand homes built for whaling captains, and laid-back beaches. Refuel every few hours with a lobster roll or perfectly prepared bay scallops before spending the night at a waterfront resort like the White Elephant Nantucket .

Newport, Rhode Island

nikon401/Getty Images

Fans of HBO’s Gilded Age owe themselves a trip to Newport, the summer vacay spot of choice for the late-19th-century elite. Take a stroll down the Cliff Walk to see Newport’s lavish mansions on one side and the Atlantic Ocean crashing against rocks on the other. The 3.5-mile path works up an appetite, so you’ll be ready to feast like a Vanderbilt: do the (BYOB!) brunch at Cru Cafe or go big with lobster mac ‘n’ cheese at local landmark, Brick Alley Pub.

Sugar Hill, New Hampshire

Thomas H. Mitchell/Getty Images

City folk looking for a slow pace and gorgeous scenic views find lots (and lots) to love in Sugar Hill. The sight of brilliant fall colors or fields blanketed in deep purple lupines — set against New Hampshire’s rugged White Mountains — is like a massage for your optic nerves. At Harman’s Cheese & Country Store, scoop up crackers and a hunk of aged cheddar to stash in your pack before hiking to Bridal Veil Falls (via the family-friendly Coppermine Trail) or summiting Mount Lafayette (Skookumchuck Trail is a toughie, but it’s well rated by hikers).

Camden, Maine

DenisTangneyJr/Getty Images

Often called one of the most beautiful small towns in the U.S. , Camden is a popular filming location for TV shows and Hollywood films. After enjoying a big bowl of haddock chowder on the harbor, peep the handsome Queen Anne-style houses in the historic district or make your way up to the top of Mount Battie, where the view inspired Maine native Edna St. Vincent Millay to write one of her finest poems. And remember, it’s not a trip to Maine without some quality antiquing: peruse the treasures inside Antiques at 10 Mechanic.

Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts

Christopher Seufert Photography/Getty Images

Think of it this way: getting there is half the fun. Sure, the ferry to Martha’s Vineyard, sister island to Nantucket, can be a bit of a test for landlubbers, but once you disembark, you’ll find a treasure trove of seaside villages, bike paths, and A+ lobster rolls. First stop: Waterside Market, where yummy breakfast sandwiches are served all day (or opt for lobster salad on brioche straight out of the gate), then grab a cab or bike over to Oak Bluffs for beach time and frozen drinks at Nancy’s. Spend a day in pristine little Edgartown, with its indie shops (Edgartown Books is a real treat, as is the hidden cafe behind it), raw bars, Greek Revival mansions, and charming boutique hotels like Faraway Martha's Vineyard .

Lakes Region, New Hampshire

Walter Bibikow/Getty Images

Woods, rocky summits, and hundreds of lakes and ponds set the scene for this ridiculously pretty area surrounding Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire's largest lake. Set in the White Mountain foothills, the region seduces leaf-peepers, walkers, boaters, cyclists, and off-roaders in search of abundant outdoor activities.

It’d be a shame not to get on the water in the warmer months, so hop aboard one of M/S Mount Washington ’s daily scenic cruises for a mimosa and postcard-worthy views of the surrounding mountains. Hikers have 28 miles of trails to explore at Castle in the Clouds and boundless views to enjoy at the top of Belknap Mountain, the highest peak in the area.

Woodstock, Vermont

jonathansloane/Getty Images

Dotted with old covered bridges, quaint cafes, and Victorian homes, Woodstock is the epitome of an idyllic New England town. At Billings Farm and Museum, say hi to the Jersey cows and draft horses, enjoy a maple sundae, and grab some smoked cheddar to go (it’ll make a tasty trail snack). Prue and Paul fans: Hop over to the neighboring town of Norwich to channel your inner Great British Baking Show contestant with a pie- and-tart-making class at King Arthur Baking Company.

Great Barrington, Massachusetts

Barry Winiker/Getty Images

Part of the Berkshires, Great Barrington looks straight out of a Louisa May Alcott novel. Everywhere you look are storybook old buildings now housing bakeries, upscale grocers, and farm-to-fork restaurants. (During the holidays, the town looks like the real-life version of a snow globe.) See what’s going on at Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center, a 1905 theater hosting everything from classic flicks to big-name bands.

Bar Harbor, Maine

Paul Souders/Getty Images

Once upon a time (in the late 1800s), Bar Harbor was a summer oasis for the Vanderbilts, Rockefellers, Astors, and other VIP members of society looking to beat the heat. The appeal of this place takes no imagination; Bar Harbor is a quaint small town on Frenchman Bay and a gateway to Acadia National Park. Take a warm-up stroll along Bar Harbor’s shore path before diving into moody Acadia, where rocky shores and 150 miles of hiking trails await.

Portsmouth, New Hampshire

Drive about an hour north of Boston, and you’ll find the darling town of Portsmouth. Kick off a walking tour at Market Square, hit the Portsmouth Harbor Trail, and dedicate a couple of hours to Strawbery Banke Museum — an outdoor museum with historic structures and costumed actors bringing three centuries of history to life. Reward yourself with the oyster happy hour and a cold local Smuttynose at Row 34 before moving on to dinner at Black Trumpet, a bistro and wine bar.

North Adams, Massachusetts

John Greim/Getty Images

Art lovers have streamed into North Adams since 1999 when Mass MoCA opened in a previously abandoned 19th-century mill. Bed down at the art-filled Hotel Downstreet or The Porches Inn, a series of Victorian homes that once housed textile workers. The draws of this small Berkshires city don’t end with Sol Lewitt’s wall drawings and Michael Oatman’s installation art, on view at Mass MoCA. Outdoor options include seeing the continent’s only natural white marble arch at Natural Bridge State Park and hiking Mount Greylock, the highest mountain in Massachusetts.

Westerly, Rhode Island

Westerly may not have quite the vacay clout as Newport or the Vineyard, yet the coastal town balloons in the summer with beachgoers looking to hit Narragansett Bay and Misquamicut State Beach. For a quintessential New England weekend getaway, spend at least an afternoon in the ocean-view neighborhood of Watch Hill, visiting its 1850s lighthouse and walking along the pristine beach at the Napatree Point Conservation Area.

Provincetown, Massachusetts

Journey to the farthest-flung tip of Cape Cod, and you’ll be rewarded with some of the area’s best stretches of sand, cool boutiques and art galleries, and an enchantingly funky and bohemian vibe. This LGBTQ-friendly town has something for every mood, whether it’s drag karaoke, dance parties, and pub crawls that strike your fancy or catching the sunset on Herring Cove Beach.

Jackson and North Conway, New Hampshire

Peter Unger/Getty Images

These sister towns in New Hampshire’s pretty Mount Washington Valley make a popular getaway, thanks to their waterfall hikes, scenic drives, small-town shopping scene (Schartner Farms has a drive-up, honor-system jam stand — how cute is that?), and big-box outlets.

On the highway between the two towns is Sunrise Shack, an old-school drive-in restaurant that's now a roadside staple for truly enormous breakfasts. After a summer swim at Echo Lake State Park or a challenging hike on Mount Chocorua, indulge in the biggest cone you’ve ever seen at Trails End Ice Cream.

Mystic, Connecticut

Tessa Desjardins/Travel + Leisure

History lovers looking for a fun-filled weekend getaway in New England will likely love this former shipbuilding hub. The Mystic Seaport Museum is a fascinating jumping-off point, with its million-plus artifacts depicting the town’s nautical life — you can even test out your sea legs on vessels like the Charles W. Morgan, the last wooden whaling ship that remains in the world today.

Appreciate the Long Island Sound and Fisher’s Island views at Bluff Point State Park and feast on some of the best seafood around at Oyster Club. Our perfect meal? Smoky Rhode Island clam chowder, dashi-buttery roasted oysters, and the homemade bucatini.

Montpelier, Vermont

Nestled in the foothills of the Green Mountains, the country’s smallest state capital by population brims with opportunities for nature activities, from hiking up the 4,000-foot peak of Camel’s Hump to whitewater rafting on the Winooski River. Of course, no trip to this neck of the woods is complete without a taste of what it does best. At Morse Farm's and Bragg Farms' maple sugar houses, you can sample the Vermont specialty in the form of maple cookies, kettle corn, or “creemee” (Vermontese for soft serve).

Kennebunkport, Maine

JOSEPH PREZIOSO/Getty Images

Like Mystic, Kennebunkport boomed as a shipbuilding hub during New England’s maritime heyday. The coastal town’s nautical vibe lives on, with glossy Italian-built yachts bobbing in the harbor and authentic schooners sailing toward the Atlantic. Kennebunkport swells in the summertime with New Englanders flocking to its beaches, but the town’s boutiques, cafes, and art galleries have year-round appeal.

Litchfield, Connecticut

Buyenlarge/Getty Images

Litchfield is a small town that more than carries its weight on the history, charm, and scenic beauty fronts. This picture-book spot in rural western Connecticut (birthplace of Revolutionary leader Ethan Allen and abolitionist Harriet Beecher Stowe) has an oak-shaded town green and hundreds of historic buildings. The vast Topsmead State Forest is a favorite area for hiking and picnicking and was originally the summer estate (complete with a Cotswold-style cottage and formal gardens) of banking heiress Edith Morton Chase.

When is the best time to visit New England?

  • Month-by-month

The best time to visit New England depends on what you want to do while you’re there. There are four distinct seasons, each one bringing its own touch to the region.

We particularly recommend visiting during spring. The thawing spring temperatures bring wildflowers, and baseball when Boston’s Fenway Park opens. Many beaches also open for the season.

The summer months are ideal for a family trip. From June to August, you can expect temperatures exceeding 30°C, ideal for sailing and island-hopping in Cape Cod.

Inland, in the mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire, the New England autumn blankets the landscape in rich, warm tones as the leaves change. Harvest time happens in September and October, when farms produce apple cider. These months also offer the best whale watching off the Massachusetts coast.

Month-by-month guide for travelling in New England

Winter in Vermont

Visiting New England in January - March

The harsh winter months see many coastal resorts shut down entirely, but the mountainous areas of New England attract visitors with a host of winter sports. Vermont is the best-known state for skiing and is home to a wide variety of resorts, from the powdery snow of Jay Peak to the family-friendly Okemo Mountain. New Hampshire also draws in many East Coast skiers.

Events & Festivals

  • Saint Patrick’s Day on 17th March is a public holiday that can take over Boston — some 20% of its residents claim Irish heritage. A parade is the focal point of the celebrations.

Springtime in Connecticut

Visiting New England in April - May

Spring breathes new life into New England, with wildflowers blossoming in the mountains and warming temperatures brightening up the coastline. New Hampshire and Vermont are the main beneficiaries of springtime: alongside the flowering landscape, the maple trees enter their sugaring season. In Boston , baseball fever sparks into life in April as the city’s beloved Red Sox begin their gruelling 162-game season.

  • The Boston Marathon, which has been running since the late 1800s, takes place on Patriots' Day (the third Monday in April). Now attracting half a million visitors, the event’s recent history has tightened the city’s bond with the race and made it a poignant reminder of Boston’s resilience.

Lobster Buoys, Maine

Visiting New England in June - August

The summer months are one of the two peak seasons in New England, when the entire region is in its element as temperatures soar. Visitors can enjoy fully the area’s scenery, from glacial lakes and mountains to the coast and its pristine beaches. Summer is a great time for families to visit, with a plethora of activities to choose from, although this is one of the busiest times of year. For more seclusion, Bar Harbor in Maine is the launch point for the Acadia National Park, where the majority of the state’s 75,000 moose live along with 40 other wildlife species.

  • Tanglewood — every summer, the Boston Symphony Orchestra relocates to the countryside of the Berkshires and holds a series of concerts on the Tanglewood Estate. One of the best-known classical music festivals in the USA, it typically begins in mid-June.

Vermont in Autumn

Visiting New England in September - October

New England’s second peak season is autumn, when the shift to cooler temperatures sets off the glorious fall displays. From mid-September to October, the blanket of reds and golds descends from Canada and falls across New England like a curtain, drawing a huge number of ‘leaf peeper’ tourists. The window for seeing the foliage is quite narrow, and New England’s small inns book up many months in advance. The cooler temperatures lend themselves to walking and hiking, and you can also head to Provincetown for whale watching as the cooling Atlantic Ocean pushes whales closer to the shoreline.

Old State House at night, Boston

Visiting New England in November - December

The end of October signals the end of the travel season in New England, and many hotels and inns close up until the end of the year. Thanksgiving typically signals the start of ski season in Vermont and New Hampshire, though the snowfall can be patchy.

  • Thanksgiving Day, taking place on the fourth Thursday in November, is the busiest travel day in the USA as the majority of the country heads home for this public holiday.

T he restaurants serving up “unforgettable” dining experiences across America have style as well as great food, and People magazine recently named six of them in New England.

“These super-stylish stunners deliver unforgettable dining experiences,” wrote People about the restaurants on its list.

At Wusong Road in Cambridge, People wrote: “Maximalism reigns at this tiki restaurant, with thatched overhangs, 1970s-era peacock chairs, and tropical wallpaper.”

Nature is on display at Maine’s Earth at Hidden Pond, wrote the publication, where its log walls and rough-hewn chairs bring a “cozy vibe.”

Diners can choose from three “ultra-cozy” rooms at New Hampshire’s historic Three Chimneys Inn, where traditional New England fare is served, according to People .

At Rhode Island’s Cara, “A gorgeous former mansion in Newport Beach is the intimate setting for this fine-dining restaurant with Atlantic Ocean views.”

How Trump's conviction could change the dynamics of the 2024 race

By Olivia Rinaldi , Jacob Rosen , Katrina Kaufman

Updated on: May 31, 2024 / 11:57 AM EDT / CBS News

Former President Donald Trump has been found guilty of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in his Manhattan criminal trial, adding another layer of uncertainty to an already unprecedented campaign.

As a c onvicted felon , Trump is not prevented from continuing to campaign for president , since the Constitution does not prohibit candidates from running for president even if they are convicted of a crime. In fact, there is precedent for a candidate running from behind bars: In 1920, Socialist Party candidate Eugene V. Debs ran for president from a federal penitentiary in Atlanta.

Trump is the first former U.S. president to be found guilty of felonies, and the first major party candidate to run for office after being found guilty of a crime. Here's how his conviction could change the 2024 campaign:

How Trump can campaign after his conviction

Now that he's convicted, Trump is all but certain to appeal the decision handed down by the jury, and he is likely to be able to return to the campaign trail as the process plays out.

The next development in the case will come at sentencing, currently scheduled for July 11. Justice Juan Merchan has wide discretion over when sentencing occurs and what the punishment looks like. Trump faces a maximum of up to four years in prison and a $5,000 fine for each of the 34 felony charges of falsification of business records. The sentencing options available to Merchan include prison, probation, conditional discharge, fines or house arrest.

The judge could put limitations on his travel, such as restricting Trump from leaving the state and taking his passport, but Merchan has said he doesn't want to interfere with his ability to campaign.

"I would think that the judge wouldn't dare interfere with his right to speak to the American public because it's the right of the voters to be informed as well," said John Coffee, a professor at Columbia Law School and an expert on corporate governance and white collar crime.

In a recent survey of dozens of cases brought by Manhattan District Attorney's Office in which falsifying business records was the most serious charge at arraignment, attorney and author Norm Eisen found that roughly one in 10 of those cases resulted in a sentence of incarceration.

"I think that is fascinating," said Caroline Polisi, a criminal defense attorney and professor at Columbia Law School. "A lot of commentators say the reason he won't be incarcerated is because the logistics of it with respect to the Secret Service would be too much. On the other hand, if you're saying he should be treated like any other defendant, we have a lot of data saying that 90% of other defendants would not get jail time in this situation."

The impact of the conviction on Trump's ability to campaign could largely hinge on what sentence Merchan ultimately hands down, and when Trump would serve it.

"In the context in which he is found guilty and then sentenced to no jail time, I don't think it's going to cause a bit of difference," added Polisi. "There might be some minor issues. He might not be able to vote for himself. But other than that, I don't think it's going to cause any problems."

When determining Trump's sentence, the judge could take into account his numerous gag order violations — which led Merchan to threaten him with jail time if the violations continued — and his lack of demonstrated remorse or respect for the legal system. Throughout the trial, Trump referred to Merchan as "conflicted" and "corrupt" and to the case itself as a "sham."

"In New York, a 78-year-old defendant, who's a first time offender, committed a non-violent offense, and has an otherwise, well, distinguished record — in some regards being an ex-president is distinguished. In that kind of world, there'd be no chance of an incarceration sentence," said Coffee. Trump turns 78 on June 14. "They can use probation, they can use fines. But there may be a view of many judges that you have to show that no one's above the law, and even the future president should have a taste of prison."

Even if Merchan does order Trump to serve time behind bars, the sentence could be deferred until his appeal has run its course.

"In other cases, when you don't have someone running for the White House, it would be more or acceptable to put him immediately into incarceration," said Coffee. "You certainly could put special conditions on what he could do or put him under house arrest, but I think until we get to the actual election, we're going to have to let Donald Trump run around and campaign."

The conviction's possible impact on Trump's poll numbers and support

Trump has predicted that a conviction in this trial could boost his poll numbers.

"Even if convicted, I think that it has absolutely no impact. It may drive the numbers up, but we don't want that. We want to have a fair verdict," Trump told CBS Pittsburgh in an interview earlier this month.

Trump's support among his Republican base has been remarkably resilient in the face of his various criminal cases. In the months following his four indictments last year, Trump maintained his commanding lead in the Republican primary, capturing the nomination despite the dozens of criminal charges he faced.

Many Trump supporters who CBS News has interviewed since the trial began have said a guilty conviction will not change how they vote in November, adopting the former president's grievances as their own.

"Stormy Daniels has already been reviewed and stuff. It's kind of coincidental," Michigan resident Lori Beyer said at a recent rally in Freeland, Michigan, adding she would vote for Trump regardless of the conviction. "I don't think it's going to impact it, as far as I'm concerned."

Whether a conviction changes the minds of voters who are not committed to the former president remains to be seen. A recent CBS News poll found that the majority of Americans believed Trump is "definitely or probably" guilty of the charges he faced in New York. The overwhelming majority of Democrats — 93% — believed Trump was guilty, while 78% Republicans said he was not. Independents were split, with 53% believing he was guilty and 47% saying he wasn't.

Opinions about whether Trump was guilty or not were already highly partisan, according to Kabir Khanna, deputy director of elections and data analytics for CBS News. Most people who believed Trump was guilty also thought the jury would convict him, and vice versa.

Additionally, Khanna said people who followed the trial closely were the most polarized in their views.

"Together, these factors could blunt the impact of the verdict on the views of an already divided public," Khanna said. "Some voters may be swayed by the news, but I wouldn't expect a sea change."

Other polling supports that notion. A NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist survey released Thursday found that 67% of registered voters nationwide said a Trump conviction would not make a difference in how they vote. Among independents, just 11% said a guilty verdict would make them less likely to vote for Trump.

The conviction also gives the Biden campaign a potentially potent new weapon in their arsenal: the ability to label Trump a convicted felon. Mr. Biden remained largely silent about the Trump trial while it was ongoing, but NBC News reported last week that he planned to become more aggressive about Trump's legal woes after the trial concluded, while acknowledging that Trump would be on the ballot regardless of how his legal cases played out.

Trump has used the trial to help boost his fundraising, and will likely look to capitalize on the conviction. The Trump campaign and Republican National Committee saw an influx of donations after jury selection began, with the two entities raising $76 million in April. His campaign had about $50 million cash on hand at the beginning of May as he prepared to get back out on the campaign trail after the trial.

The former president repeatedly used the developments in the trial to raise money, including when he was held in contempt for violating the gag order against him.

"I'd get arrested ONE MILLION TIMES before I'd let those filthy dogs get their hands on you," one typical fundraising appeal read.

Trump's other criminal cases

The New York case might be the only one of Trump's four criminal prosecutions to reach a conclusion before voters cast their ballots in the fall, giving the guilty verdict added weight.

The two federal cases brought by special counsel Jack Smith remain in limbo.

In Washington, D.C., Trump faces charges related to his actions to remain in power after the 2016 election. Trump has argued that he is immune from prosecution, and the Supreme Court is currently weighing his claim.

The high court heard arguments in the immunity dispute on April 26 and is expected to issue a decision on the matter before the end of the court's term, likely in June. If the case is allowed to move forward, there is a slim possibility that the district court could schedule the trial before November. If the justices side with Trump and find him immune from prosecution, the charges would be dropped.

In Florida, Trump faces federal charges stemming from his retention of classified documents after he left the White House. Judge Aileen Cannon, who was appointed by Trump, has indefinitely postponed the trial. She ruled in early May that picking a trial date would be "imprudent and inconsistent with the court's duty to fully and fairly consider" numerous unresolved pre-trial motions. Those motions include Trump's efforts to dismiss the case altogether, as well as issues related to what classified information can be revealed at trial.

In the third case that remains outstanding, Trump faces state charges related to the 2020 election in Fulton County, Georgia. The trial in that matter is also on hold as Trump seeks to have District Attorney Fani Willis removed from the case. Georgia's Court of Appeals recently granted Trump's appeal of a decision that had allowed her to remain, bringing the trial to a temporary halt.

Trump's two federal cases could largely be in voters' hands if they are not resolved by November, a fact that raises his personal stake in the outcome. If he wins and returns to the White House in January 2025, Trump could order the Justice Department to seek to drop the charges altogether.

Trump has pleaded not guilty in all of the criminal cases against him.

England’s final Euro 2024 warm-up match vs Iceland: When, where and what time?

England have one more warm-up friendly left on home soil, against Iceland, before they travel to Germany for this summer’s Euro 2024 tournament.

On Monday night, they eventually found their goal-scoring form to beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 3-0 at St James’ Park, with goals coming from Cole Palmer , Trent Alexander-Arnold and Harry Kane.

This week’s second match will be the last chance for players to impress Gareth Southgate as he prepares to submit his final England squad for the Euros.

When do England play Iceland and where?

England’s final Euro 2024 warm-up match will be against Iceland on Friday, June 7, at Wembley Stadium.

What time does England vs Iceland start?

The match with Iceland will start at 7.45pm.

What channel is the match on TV?

England’s Euro 2024 warm-up matches are being shown live on Channel 4. Alternatively, you can bookmark this page and return to follow Friday’s game via our live blog, which will include commentary and analysis from our team of reporters at the grounds.

When it comes to the actual Euros, England matches will be spread across BBC and ITV.

England vs Iceland head-to-head

The two teams have faced off five times before, with the last coming in Nov 2020 for a behind-closed-doors Nations League match at Wembley. England won 4-0 with Declan Rice and Phil Foden (2) scoring for their country for the first time. Mason Mount got the other goal. England also won their other Nations League match two months previous, thanks to Raheem Sterling ’s penalty.

Before that came one of Iceland’s most memorable results to date, beating the Three Lions 2-1 to knock them out of Euro 2016, in what was Roy Hodgson’s last match as England manager.

It was Iceland’s first and only victory over England, after the Three Lions also won 6-1 in 2004 and drew 1-1 in a 1982 friendly.

What is the latest England news?

England captain Harry Kane is confident he will be fit and firing for the start of Euro 2024.

The former Tottenham striker missed the end of his domestic campaign with Bayern Munich due to a back injury but came off the bench to score in Monday’s 3-0 friendly victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in Newcastle.

Kane told Channel 4: “I am feeling good. A lot of the end of season was precaution, of course there is a big summer coming up.

“We didn’t want to take risks with it. In the end it was a good chance to take a good break after a tough season.

“It has almost worked in my favour, missing the back end of the season. It gave me a chance to get a bit more rest than I was going to get.

“I’m not one who takes too long to get sharp and it was nice to get a goal there to get that feeling back again.”

When do the Euros start?

Euro 2024 starts on Friday, June 14, with hosts Germany playing Scotland. England play their first match two days later, on the Sunday, against Serbia . Euro 2024 fixtures take place from June 14-July 14.

Guilty but unashamed, Trump says he will see Biden in November

WASHINGTON — Donald Trump is guilty but not ashamed. The question now is whether he will suffer politically for his crimes.

The first former American president convicted at trial — found guilty Thursday on all 34 counts of scheming to help his 2016 campaign by covering up an alleged sexual encounter — Trump rallied quickly to raise money and votes from the verdict.

He blasted out a fundraising message to donors just minutes after the jury finished its work, and he vowed in the courthouse that "the real verdict is going to be Nov. 5 by the people" when he faces President Joe Biden in a rematch of their 2020 election.

Biden agreed.

"There’s only one way to keep Donald Trump out of the Oval Office: At the ballot box," he said in a statement posted to X along with a link to donate to his campaign. He took no victory lap, uttered no insult and offered no prediction of Trump's political demise.

Trump also called himself a “ political prisoner ” in another fundraising appeal shortly after the verdict, even though he is not in prison.

There is simply no precedent for a convicted candidate's carrying a major party's banner into a general election. Many political experts say it is too early to tell whether the outcome will add fuel to Trump's campaign or make it toxic to persuadable voters.

"What no one knows yet is what independent and swing voters are going to do," said Chris Kofinis, a Democratic strategist who has worked on multiple presidential campaigns.

Democrats who spoke to NBC News on Thursday were split on whether Biden might get a bump from the verdict, with some seeing genuine upside to Trump's troubles and others expressing more doubt.

"This is the result we wanted and is another talking point against Trump but doesn’t mean a lot for actual votes," said a Biden campaign official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to give an assessment without fear of retribution.

On the other side of the political divide, Republicans followed Trump's lead, voicing confidence that the jury's decision would create a powerful backlash in his favor.

James Blair, political director for the Trump campaign and the Republican National Committee, conducted a conference call with GOP state party chairs shortly after the result was made public, according to two people who were on the call.

"There's a clear message they want us to convey," a participant said of Trump's political apparatus. "It is an unjust witch hunt. We will appeal, and we will win the appeal. Guys, we just elected the next president of the United States."

If anyone has a playbook for this moment, it is Trump. He rode Republican outrage over his indictments in two federal and two state cases to a political rebound that helped him secure a third straight Republican nomination this year.

Lacking evidence of any coordination between Biden and the New York prosecutors who tried the case — much less the dozen jurors who voted unanimously to convict him on all counts — Trump nonetheless accused the president of abusing his power to harm a rival.

"This was done by the Biden administration in order to wound, to hurt a political opponent,” Trump said at the courthouse.

His son Donald Trump Jr., reviving a controversial fram ing from Trump's presidency , said in a social media post that the U.S. is now a "s---hole" country.

While Biden took a more subdued approach to the verdict Thursday, some Democrats said it should help him sway voters.

"The jury verdict affirms that former President Donald J. Trump is an unprecedented criminal who occupied the Oval Office and seeks to do so again," said Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas. "Joe Biden needs to remind all Americans of good conscience that such a person is completely unfit to serve as president. He's clearly a danger to democracy."

A longtime Democratic operative said the trial is “all upside for Biden,” in part because it will remind voters of “the chaos of [Trump’s] presidency.”

To the extent that undecided voters are dissatisfied with Biden, the operative said, “I don’t think this helps Trump become more appealing with that group.”

Trump runs the risk of blowing a political opportunity if he leans too heavily into his personal animus against Biden, Republican strategist Brad Todd said.

"Alvin Bragg and 12 New Yorkers just elected Donald Trump — if he plays his cards right," Todd said, referring to the Manhattan prosecutor whose office tried the case. To do that, Todd said, Trump has to make sure that his response is aimed at voters: "not about him, but about them."

That is already taking the form of Trump and his campaign arguing that Democrats are trying to use the court system to deny the public a choice in the election.

"This is outrageous," said Brian Ballard, a Florida lobbyist who raises money for Trump. "It’s going to help not just with small-dollar donors but with everything. The intensity both from a fundraising standpoint and from just a political energy standpoint is going to be huge. Whatever Democrats hoped to get out of this has backfired.”

It is not clear that Republicans would have portrayed any verdict — conviction, acquittal or a hung jury — as a political defeat for Trump. And there can be little doubt that he would prefer to have avoided the criminal label.

News that the jury had reached a verdict circulated through the Trump and Biden camps in the minutes before the convictions were returned.

Biden's camp scrambled to send messaging guidance to operatives once Trump had been pronounced guilty — but not before — according to a person familiar with internal deliberations.

In Trump's orbit, there were signs that a conviction would not be seen as the full victory that some in the party were quick to claim.

"The quickness of this decision is probably not a good sign,” a senior Trump campaign official said just before the jury rendered its judgment.

Massport offers CEO job to Rich Davey, longtime Boston-area transportation leader

Davey currently leads nyc transit.

Rich Davey speaks at Boston City Hall on March 6, 2015.

The Massachusetts Port Authority board on Wednesday picked longtime Boston-area transportation leader Rich Davey to be its next CEO, wrapping up a monthslong search involving dozens of candidates.

Davey, currently the president of New York City Transit , won out over Eulois Cleckley, the other finalist and the CEO of the Miami-Dade transportation department in Florida. Although Davey has held a highly visible role in New York for the past two years, he has a long track record in Boston including a stint as chairman of the Massport board when he served as transportation secretary under then-governor Deval Patrick.

Assuming he takes the job, Davey would replace Lisa Wieland, who left Massport in November to become the New England president for National Grid. Since that time, Massport has been run on an interim basis by the authority’s aviation director, Ed Freni, who was not interested in being a candidate for the CEO position. Davey is being offered a base salary of $420,000 a year, essentially the same as Wieland’s pay when she left, with a five year-contract beginning no later than Sept. 9.

Davey got his start in transportation nearly two decades ago working for the company that ran Greater Boston’s commuter rail system, working his way up to general manager. He then spent nearly two years as general manager of the MBTA in 2010 and 2011 before becoming state transportation secretary, a job he held through 2014. After Charlie Baker replaced Patrick in the governor’s office in 2015, Davey served as the top staff person for the business-backed organization behind Boston’s failed bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympics. In the time between the Olympics effort and joining NYC Transit, the nation’s largest public transit agency, Davey primarily worked at Boston Consulting Group specializing in transportation issues.

The Massport board’s choice was not unanimous, although everyone on the board ultimately approved of Davey in the formal vote. Board members Laura Sen and Warren Fields said they preferred Cleckley, citing his transportation leadership experience in several major metro areas — Miami, Houston, and Denver.

To some extent, the debate among the board members centered around whether it made more sense to hire an insider who knows the parochial world of Boston politics, or someone with more outside perspective.

John Nucci, a board member who represents Massport’s community advisory committee, noted that he began the search process hoping that a top candidate would emerge who was familiar with the city and the region.

“I was hoping that the best person would be somebody with roots in the area, that could ... hit the ground running,” Nucci said. “We have found that person, and it’s Mr. Davey.”

Logan Airport is one of several major entities overseen by the Massachusetts Port Authority.

And board member Monica Tibbits-Nutt, Governor Maura Healey’s transportation secretary, said she was impressed with how Davey helped the New York transit system rebound from the COVID-19 pandemic, saying his accomplishments there are “nothing short of amazing.”

But Fields offered a counterargument that favored Cleckley, saying his preferred candidate would inject “new blood” into the authority and send a positive message about it.

“We have an opportunity to bring somebody in who has a wealth of knowledge in other markets,” Fields said. “You have the opportunity to bring somebody who has run large organizations and multiple big cities ... and to bring that knowledge into our organization to help make us better. I would be jumping at that opportunity.”

Sen then added: “We do need that outside perspective and energy.”

Only one of the board members who voted on Wednesday — International Brotherhood of Teamsters president Sean O’Brien — served on the Massport board during the time Davey chaired it. The board’s search committee — consisting of board chair Patricia Jacobs, O’Brien, and Fields — worked with search firm Isaacson, Miller to screen dozens of candidates earlier this year, narrowing the list down to 10 candidates who were invited for interviews in late March. Davey and Cleckley were named as finalists two weeks ago.

Massport is the state’s largest quasi-public authority, with oversight of three airports: Logan International Airport in East Boston, Hanscom Field in Bedford, and Worcester Regional Airport. The authority also oversees cargo and cruise ship terminals in South Boston along with several nearby development parcels. About 1,300 people work directly for Massport, with as many 20,000 others employed by tenants at Massport’s various facilities.

It’s a world Davey knows well.

“Here we’ve got a guy who has not only an understanding of Massport, he knows the players, he [has] great faith in the Massport team,” said board member Lew Evangelidis, the Worcester County Sheriff. “He doesn’t see the need to come in and shake up the place.”

Jim Rooney, chief executive of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, said that while Davey is well respected nationally for his transportation expertise, understanding the local political climate is also an important element of the Massport CEO job.

“I think what he brings to the table is not just the technical knowledge but also political savvy, especially in the context of a Boston/Massachusetts position like this, where the ability to navigate the politics of the State House [and] the city are very important,” Rooney said. “Success in positions like this is often defined by one’s ability to navigate the politics, and Rich has that capacity.”
