‘An extraordinarily good impression of being completely assured and at ease’ … Nick Cave performing at All Points East, 28 August 2022.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds review – Cave lures adoring crowd into his arms

All Points East festival, Victoria Park, London A commanding, impressively flexible Cave plucks elegiac and storming songs from across his catalogue in a career-best, virtuoso performance

“W e’re very happy,” announces Nick Cave as the Bad Seeds arrive on stage. You think he’s going to say something standard about being back in London, but no. “Because it’s our last gig for fucking months,” he says. It’s also the first time Cave has performed in the UK with his most celebrated backing band in more than four years. Coronavirus is partly to blame, although Covid did nothing to stem Cave’s famously torrential work rate.

In the interim, he has produced two albums, two books and a handful of singles. There was a film soundtrack and a libretto for an opera. He toured the world with a solo show which interspersed songs with questions from the audience that ranged from his thoughts on the existence of God to more prosaic matters. “I live in your old flat in Hove – do you know where the stopcock is?” asked one punter in his adopted hometown of Brighton. There was also a striking lockdown livestream from Alexandra Palace, and gigs with Warren Ellis that centred around last year’s collaborative Carnage and its extraordinary predecessor Ghosteen .

Those albums saw Cave continue a process of unravelling his sound into something more abstract: he began picking at its threads on 2013’s Push the Sky Away and the subsequent Skeleton Tree , but here they arrived at a largely beat-less drift, songs that moved – as one track on Carnage put it – “like a raincloud that keeps circling overhead”. They could be impossibly beautiful, they could be strafed with dive-bombing noise, but they never sounded much like the Bad Seeds of old.

It’s a surprise how neatly they slot among the more straightforwardly muscular songs from Cave’s back catalogue, which are rendered weightier than ever by the addition of a trio of backing vocalists whose contributions include underlining the T-Rex-y qualities of Get Ready for Love , and providing a startling visual accompaniment during From Her to Eternity . As Cave prowls the front of the stage, screaming and snarling about sexual obsession – “the desire to possess her is a wound!” – they sway gently, performing synchronised dance moves in sequinned outfits. But fit they do.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

There’s a certain bravery about playing Ghosteen’s Bright Horses in the middle of a headlining festival set – it abandons any standard verse-chorus structure amid a wash of floating electronics and high, keening backing vocals courtesy of Ellis – but it’s a song with such emotional heft that it feels entirely of a piece with The Mercy Seat , or an extended Tupelo that broods even more forcefully than the recorded version, or an amended take on Red Right Hand that suggests the titular villain’s dark skills include dealing with a fan in the front row’s choice of clothing: “You hate that shitty Wilco T-shirt you’re wearing, brother? He’ll get you a new one.”

Then again, on stage, Cave is a master of contrasts. His performances are compellingly intense, involving much plunging into the audience, grabbing their hands and singing lyrics directly into their faces. Between songs, he’s reliably hilarious: “What are you doing woman?” he demands of a particularly ardent female fan. “This is sexual harassment in the workplace!” His ability to go straight from something as potent and wrenching as his delivery of Skeleton Tree’s piano ballad I Need You to playing his performance for laughs is a hugely impressive skill: for an artist who’s talked about being beset by stage fright and insecurity, Cave does an extraordinarily good impression of being completely assured and at ease.

His band, meanwhile, are equally accomplished at juxtaposition: they can sound stately and majestic, or conjure up broiling masses of noise, often within the space of the same song. A lot of the broiling masses of noise are conjured up by Ellis, who has devised a way of creating a racket that sounds like the end of the world by frantically waving his violin in the air. He cuts almost as compelling a figure on stage as Cave, reflected in the fact that the audience start chanting his name.

It ends with an encore that pairs Into My Arms and The Weeping Song with the fragile, haunted Ghosteen Speaks . It’s a powerful ending to a show that highlights the remarkable position that Cave has carved out for himself over recent years. Forty-something years into his career, he could easily be coasting on his reputation and back catalogue: instead he keeps pushing forward, with startling results.

Nick Cave & Warren Ellis live in London: Minimal elements for maximum impact

Fairfield Halls, Croydon, September 4: The Bad Seeds duo bring ‘CARNAGE’ to life at breathtaking warm-up show

Nick Cave, live. Credit: WENN Rights Ltd / Alamy Stock Photo

“Hello Croydon,” says Nick Cave with a sort-of smile from beneath the spotlight of Fairfield Halls, a titter of laughter rippling through the crowd. It’s not the easiest thing to say without coming off a bit Spinal Tap, but Cave knows it, having presumedly chosen this spot a little off London’s standard beaten gig track to warm-up for this new and modestly ambitious new live spectacle.

A show with his usual outfit The Bad Seeds is a religiously raucous affair – a full-gamut circus of rock, roll, blues, soul, murder, sex, love, hellfire and redemption, with Cave playing the manic lothario ringleader. This time, it’s a lot more pared back. To take their masterful 2021 lockdown album ‘CARNAGE ’ on the road, Cave and regular Bad Seed and go-to collaborator Warren Ellis present the bare-boned elements of some of their most spectral work – largely drawing from their most recent records ‘CARNAGE’, ‘ Ghosteen’ and ‘Skeleton Tree ’ – to really draw on that feeling of intimacy. If you didn’t get the memo about the lack of ‘hits’, the duo makes no apologies. “They didn’t last long,” snarks Cave as a couple scuttles across the front row to the bar early on the set. “‘Oh no, they’re going to play that fucking ‘Ghosteen’ shit!’”

We’re all here for it. This is the first chance we’ve had to hear much of their latter work live. ‘Ghosteen’ tender cuts ‘Spinning Song’, ‘Bright Horses’ and ‘Night Raid’ bloom and fill the venue having previously felt quite delicate and gossamer on record, while the blind love of ‘Waiting For You’ holds the room together in a manner that makes 18 months of being apart feel ultimately worth the wait. ‘CARNAGE’ tracks really pack a punch too, not least for capturing our collective spirit. “ We won’t get to anywhere anytime this year, darling…unless you take me there ,” he pines on the aching ‘Albuquerque’, resonating the importance of togetherness during lockdown, while ‘White Elephant’ replays the real-life horror show of recent newsreels in a typically grand Cave style.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Warren Ellis (@thewarrenellis)

The apocalyptic trance of show highlight ‘Hand Of God’ feels all the more vital live, while the stage outing of ‘Shattered To The Ground’ cuts straight to the track’s devastating sentimental heart. The impact is owed to the power of this setup. Cave’s on piano and vocals, standing regularly to prowl the stage in his sermon-like manner, Ellis remains mostly sat down on synths, guitar and violin, while Jehnny Beth ’s partner and collaborator Johnny Hostile stands at the back providing fittingly doom-y loops, guitar and percussion. They’re flanked by three heavenly backing singers Wendi Rose, Janet Rasmus and TJae Cole, with all these minimal elements ultimately acting to maximise the impact of Cave and Ellis’ rich chemistry.

Their bromance shines too. “Fuck, you look cool,” a stone-faced Cave says across the stage as Ellis cuts a sharp silhouette. He’s not wrong. “We love you Warren,” a fan later hollers from the stalls, before Cave quickly replies: “See, I told you”.

Other treats come in the form of a feather-light cover of the T Rex classic ‘Cosmic Dancer’, ‘Push The Sky Away’s towering apex ‘Higgs Boson Blues’, a predictable but comforting outing of the gorgeous lighters-up moment ‘Into My Arms’ and the underrated Grinderman number ‘Palaces Of Montezuma’. It seems these fans have been waiting all too long to throw their arms to the sky and howl back the unlikely sing-along: “ The spinal cord of JFK, wrapped in Marilyn Monroe’s negligee, I give to you ”, but here we are, at a show like no other from a true once-in-a-generation songwriting partnership. They’ll rearrange your heart and soul so many times you’ll leave like the human equivalent of Trigger’s broom.

This ‘CARNAGE’ UK tour continues into October – including two nights at London’s Royal Albert Hall – before the biblical bluster of the Bad Seeds returns to the road in 2022 . For now, enjoy Cave and Ellis in their absolute purest and classiest form; armed with just the songs, the love, and a whole lot of feeling.

Lenny kravitz to kick-off uefa champions league final, trending on billboard.

“I never think about how a record is going to go live, it never, ever occurs to me,” explains Cave in a statement. “The lyric writing process is way too hard to take ideas like that into consideration. But, when I listen to Wild God now, I think we can really do something epic with these songs live. We’re really excited about that – the record just feels like it was made for the stage.”

Wild God  will drop Aug. 30 through Cave’s own label Bad Seed, via a new, exclusive  worldwide licensing agreement  with Play It Again Sam, an imprint of the independent [ PIAS ] label group.

Earlier, the ARIA Hall of Fame-inducted bandleader said of Wild God , “there’s no f—ing around with this record. When it hits, it hits. It lifts you. It moves you. I love that about it.”

Led by Cave, the current Bad Seeds lineup consists of Thomas Wydler, Martyn Casey, Jim Sclavunos, George Vjestica and longtime collaborator Warren Ellis, who produces the forthcoming album with Cave.

Wild God stretches across 10 tracks and was cut at Miraval Studios in Provence, France and Soundtree Studios in London, England, featuring contributions from Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood (bass) and Luis Almau (nylon string guitar, acoustic guitar).

It’s the followup to  Ghosteen , the critically-lauded two-disc longplay from 2019, which explored Cave’s exposure to grief and pain, following the sudden death of his son Arthur in 2015.

Recent tour reviews

The show was very good although there were sometimes uninteresting questions being asked about ‘other’ people who of course may have been important to him but if you have Nick Cave on the stage you should try to catch as much as you can from this wonderful artist. He is brilliant, funny and - surprisingly to me - a very open person who does not have any taboos and can talk about anything. It’s amazing how easily he can find the right beautiful words to describe the most complicated emotions and states of mind.

Looking forward to going to the exhibition in Copenhagen.

Nick’s performance was more accurately an experience. He built a relationship with the audience that was at times funny, compassionate, moving. At one point, after playing “Into My Arms,” he spoke with an audience member about the loss of a loved one that moved me to tears. I go to many concerts and there have been great ones, but rarely am I sobbing with deep emotions. He was gracious, generous, honest. Few like him.

Great artist and musician, conversation with Nick Cave , not the greatest show to be fair. I just really went for the music , he sang about 10 numbers , so at over £90 per ticket (that's what I paid ) so about £9 per song. I've been to better . Sorry wasn't worth the expense
