Hi all I'm going thru a dilemna - I want to buy a Ti-L and I want to do the harder club trips into the high country as well as towing and touring. I know others are buying the ST-L so they can be lifted. My thoughts - the Ti-L has a 283mm ground clearance and together with 35's fitted should give a reasonable lift for offroad duties. In my web trauling, I've found the following comparisons to come to that conclusion, and maybe helpful to others in my position deciding on the Y62 of choice. Using the OE tyres (on all vehicles) and stock ground clearance of the GU/Y61 (210mm) as a reference point, calling it zero - the Y62 Ti-L has a +73mm better clearance, the LR Disco 3 with 50mm rise on the air suspension using a Llams kit (my previous vehicle) has +25mm, the LC 200 which has +15mm and a Jeep Trailhawk with a 50mm air lift (my sons vehicle, Llams kit available) +60mm Using 35's (34.4) on the Y62 will add another 25mm to the equation. Y62 Ti and Ti-L +98mm (Y62 ST-L +98mm) GU zero Disco 3 +25mm LC 200 +15mm Trail Hawk +60mm The Y62 Ti and Ti-L with 35's are now at their maximum at 98mm (The Y62 ST-L with a 50mm lift and 35's = 148mm) The GU allowing for a 50mm lift and 33's = +75mm The Disco can be fitted with 265/70/17 add 20mm = +45mm The LC allowing a 50mm lift and 35's is = +102mm The Trail Hawk can be fitted with 265/70/18 add 25mm = +85mm Ground clearances. Y62 Ti and Ti-L - 308mm (Y62 ST-L 358mm) Gu - 285mm Disco 3 - 255mm LC 200 - 327mm Trail hawk - 293mm From previous experience in the Disco (255mm) and a mates GU (285mm) there isn't too many places these vehicles couldn't get to. The Ti-L has 53mm more than the Disco and 20mm more than the GU - I'm pretty happy with my decision to go the Ti-L way. Of course in real life these are only numbers - in reality I'm expecting a lot more ability from the Ti-L. Your thoughts as always would be appreciated - and no Disco rantings please:anger:  

We used to have the Mercedes gl500(2006) which also had the air suspension. Max height on standard rims was 307mm. Only issue was durability as when they go it is expensive. Hence why I didn't bother with the Ti-L. Only feature I miss is the better cruise control you get plus the sat nav which is not an option on the ST-L Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk  

You have made a good choice, the kinetic suspension is terrific and maybe after 5 years may need a $ spent on it, has not been around long enough to get an idea how long they will last. For towing the air bag option works OK for us, easy to inflate and deflate. For real off road work I would buy a cheap trayback something or other, these vehicles are pure luxury for little old me. cheers!!

Spring lift doesn't affect ground clearance at all on live axle vehicles. You've made a mistake with the GU. And if you're fitting 35's on a Y62 it'd only be fair to fit the same on the GU. All you need to do is remove the mudguards. But the numbers are interesting never the less.

What about diff clearance? The most I've been hung up anywhere is on the diffs. Rock sliders sort the sill problem out and I'd assume you're getting a winch? Surely the Y62 with 35" tyres would win the diff clearance battle  

I never get hung up on my diffs but I always drag on my sliders. You need the clearance under the sills especially if you've only got independent flex.  

But like in the thread about the KO2s, horses for courses. I don't drive slow rock like you, I drive the Vic high country rutted tracks where diff clearances is better than ramp over. Sliders reduce clearance, but its millimetres well spent as far as I'm concerned  

I've mainly bottomed out on my side steps, independent cars tend to have the diffs tucked up a little better, can't wait to go off roading with the 35s on .

Still the standard ones, they're actually holding up pretty well, they're quite obviously out of shape and I've has to jump on them a few times to bend them back down, but they've never moved enough so far to touch the sills, regardless I'll still be upgrading to the superior ones when I can afford to .

Are the superior sliders air bag compatible???  

Do the standard ones have a sticker on them saying they're airbag compatible?  

I will make the assumption that the standard Nissan side steps are air bag compatible and would be held on with flimsy brackets attached to the body and not the chassis. The superior ones look like a solid piece of kit and don't look like they are designed to fold up in the event of a side impact. They have a ridged chassis mount... In saying this what would happen if the side airbags don't go off due to the sliders???? I think they look the goods and would consider them if and when I get a Y62 but only if they are airbag complaint.  

If they don't have airbag compatible stickers on them, then there is no need to have any compliance on aftermarket ones  

Will have to have a look at this when I am next at Nissan in relation to the sticker.. But in saying that I know the front bumper does not have and airbag compatible sticker on it and you have to ensure that the bullbar you install is airbag compatible...... I know this is open to interpretation but I wouldn't want to be debating this with an insurance company after the fact....I build sliders as well as a hobby and I get heaps of people asking for sliders for BT50, DMAX's etc etc with side airbags as the likes of ARB and TJM dont build for these cars due to side air bags.  

I could be wrong but there is specific ADR requirements for bullbars including airbag compliance, I don't think that extends to any other accessory  

As others have said, just looking at clearance specs is very different to actual off road where sill clearance is usually more important. The diffs receive clearance as the wheels ride up over things, but the sills need the ramp over clearance.  

I dont think ive ever got stuck on the sliders or the chassis. Number one reason for getting stuck is the diffs. I guess it depends on terrain but Victoria doesnt have a lot of rocks but tons of slippery ruts.  

I've driven mine with and without lift and have never diffed out. If this is your concern, you won't have a problem. Most of my driving is in sand and mud, creek crossings etc. My front and rear bar have really been hammered, and the side steps have been folded up to the point where I can't open the door. If you want to invest in your truck, go for bar work and do the lift last. This way you can also taylor the springs to the new weight of the vehcile. I go wheelin with clubs regularly and find the stock Y62 more than capable in comparison to other trucks. In saying this, Y62s, even with great ground clearance look very stock due to its size. A little bit more lift will never hurt. Hope this helps?

Hey Preacher, I think bullo meant he has installed poly air bags of some description (I have on mine) and that allows for the inflating/deflating!!

Nissan Patrol Super Safari 2022: upgrades announced for the off-road stalwart

It was tough before, but now the uae favourite has had a series of enhancements that have taken it to the next level.

Never one to let the blowing dust settle around the wheels of its most popular vehicles, Nissan has announced a series of upgrades and adjustments for the 2022 Super Safari, the most hardcore of the Patrol breed .

This offshoot of the UAE’s most popular car is easily distinguishable from the standard version, standing higher and looking just a little bit more high-spirited.

The latest Super Safari comes with a 4.8-litre in-line six-cylinder engine that produces 280 horsepower and 451Nm of torque. You can get the car in a five-speed automatic or manual transmission version.

The 2022 car has greater ground clearance, allowing it to tackle harsh gradients with more ease. It also has a heavy-duty coil spring suspension, with telescopic shock absorbers and a torsion bar, which should make the ride smoother.

In addition to the usual electronic power steering, the Super Safari is also equipped with a range of Nissan’s intelligent mobility features.

These include cruise control, tyre-pressure monitoring, anti-lock braking, airbags, and a system that prevents understeer and oversteer by reducing engine speed and applying the brakes individually on specific wheels when entering or exiting a corner. Not a feature those into drifting would approve of.

Inside, drivers can opt to have the seats and cabin decked out in PVC, fabric, or tan leather, with the latter being adorned with a special Super Safari emboss.

The new vehicle now comes in three colours — black, white, or gold — with a choice of grey or gold flourishes across the roof, front and rear bumpers, wheel arches and spare tyre cover. That is all set off, of course, with the bold Super Safari decal along the side, just to drive the point home.

The Patrol is now in its 70th year of production , with a special edition being unveiled at Expo 2020 . The Super Safari, introduced in 2016, is a trim line specific to the Middle East.

The 2022 Patrol Super Safari is now available in the UAE at Al Masaood Automobiles in Abu Dhabi and Arabian Automobiles in Dubai. It has a starting price of Dh153,000 ($41,654).

Nissan patrol super safari: enduring off-road icon’s encore run.

First introduced in 1997 and resurrected again seven years after its ostensible retirement, the fifth “Y61” generation Nissan Patrol’s 2017 Middle East comeback marks a welcome return of a rugged and authentic off-road icon.

Now dubbed the Nissan Patrol Super Safari and beloved by Gulf motorists in particular for its near-legendary durability, extensive off-road ability and high comfort levels, the Y61 has since been sold concurrent with the more modern and refined, if perhaps more softer-edged, “Y62” sixth generation Patrol, circa 2010 onwards.

Reliable reputation

A favourite family car and lifestyle off-roader, the Y61 Patrol’s position as an icon of the Gulf automotive scene is rooted in its extreme durability. 

This is perhaps best exemplified by its popular use as the basis for highly modified uphill sand dune drag racing, where its proverbially “bullet-proof” engine is routinely tuned to in excess of 2,000BHP. 

Playing to such a reputation, the revived Patrol Super Safari has since also spawned more off-road capable factory modified Middle East market Falcon and Gazelle editions. 

If pitched as a resurrection in response market demands in its return for private use, the Y61 has, however, never truly been retired, and remained available for fleet sales to non-governmental international agencies. 

In regular service for use in inhospitable terrain and demanding conditions by such organizations during its 2010-2017 “hiatus”, such vehicles were more basic and utilitarian variants, whereas the revived Super Safari is a more sportily styled and better-equipped variant with extensive and more up-to-date comfort, convenience and tech features.

Refreshingly uncomplicated

Boxy, chunky and upright, the Super Safari’s ruggedly utilitarian styling is virtually unchanged for it revival run, bar for the addition of more muscularly defined wheel arches, slightly redesigned light elements and the addition of two-tone paint, tailgate spoiler and new alloy wheel design. 

With a big glasshouse and low, level waistline allowing for good visibility, the Super Safari’s design is refreshingly uncomplicated and easier on the eye with its horizontal emphasis, airy cabin and low wheel-arch to bonnet height, than more complicated and vertically-oriented modern SUVs.

Renowned for its durability, the Super safari’s thoroughly proven naturally-aspirated large displacement 4.8-litre in-line 6-cylinder engine carries over. Capable of handling huge power upgrades at the hands of aftermarket tuners, the Super Safari’s engine is relatively unstressed in its stock factory state. 

Developing 280BHP at a low-revving 4,800rpm and a more substantial 332lb/ft torque at 3,600rpm on the more generous “gross” rating, as advertised, the Patrol’s engine is, however, estimated to produce perhaps around 248BHP and 310lb/ft by the more widely used ‘net’ rating system.

Ruggedly smooth

A silky smooth “straight six” with a responsive yet relaxed demeanour, the Super Safari’s engine is progressively linear in delivery. 

Pulling well from tick-over to redline, it is confident and capable, if not excessive, but delivers good low-end response, a versatile mid-range and an eager, if low-revving, top-end. 

Driving the rear wheels — under normal conditions — through a smooth shifting 5-speed automatic gearbox, the Super Safari’s engine is perhaps thirsty compared to more modern engines, but nevertheless carries its significant 2.5-tonne estimated heft through 0-100km/h in approximately 10-seconds.

Built on a rugged ladder-frame chassis and riding on multi-link coil spring suspension with good articulation, the Super Safari is designed with off-road ability and durability in mind, and even features an electric-driven winch embedded in the front bumper. 

For traversing rough terrain, the Super Safari features good 215mm ground clearance and 47° side slope and 38.7° grade capability, while short overhangs allow generous 37° approach, 27° ramp and 31° departure angles.

Its off-road abilities are meanwhile underpinned by its tough four-wheel-drive system that includes low range gears and a locking rear differential for more demanding conditions.

Sturdy and spacious

An unassailable off-road beast, the Super Safari nevertheless avails itself well on-road. Tough but comfortably compliant, its suspension and tall tyres provide a cushioned and settled ride quality, making short shrift of big and sudden bumps and potholes. 

In handling and manoeuvrability, the Patrol certainly isn’t a corner carving road racer, but isn’t particularly unwieldy either. It is instead confident, balanced and predictable through corners, and comparatively well contains body roll, while steering is light and user-friendly, if not layered with nuance and feedback.

Confidently planted and stable on highway, the Super Safari has an impregnably sturdy sense of insulated refinement, which extends to cabin quality. 

Airy and spacious, it comfortably seats front and middle row passengers, and features twin side folding third row seats to accommodate a total complement of seven. 

Styling is meanwhile elegantly uncomplicated, with user-friendly controls and instruments, and plenty of storage space. Updated in presentation and materials, the Patrol’s cabin incorporates more contemporary amenities including an infotainment screen system, reversing camera, and automatic climate control.

2021 Nissan Patrol “Super Safari” Is The New SUV You Really Want

We have lamented the Nissan Patrol SUV not being available in the US. Instead, we are stuck with the overpriced, bloated, overstuffed Armada. The 2021 Nissan Patrol “Super Safari” is the new SUV you really want. This is a full-size SUV 4×4 available in the Middle East and the Philippines. They’re rugged, dependable, and as capable as any stripped-down Toyota Land Cruiser. 

The 2021 Patrol Super Safari has seen limited changes which is probably good

Nissan has chosen 1) not to change it since the late-1990s, and 2) not to make it available anywhere else but the aforementioned countries. For 2021 Nissan has added some great features and upgrades making us want it even more. The change you’ll notice first is that black has been added to the very limited pallet of Patrol colors. So now paint colors have really expanded with black added to either gold or white. No, we’re not kidding.

The other noticeable changes include 17-inch alloy wheels, now finished in black. Also, the Super Safari decal on the quarters has been updated. Nissan doesn’t hesitate to pull out all of the stops for some exciting and dynamic changes from 2020 to 2021 models. Not. 

Inside the center stack is housed an eight-inch infotainment screen and includes Apple CarPlay. New cloth upholstery along with tan leather are two new features. An option is the addition of Super Safari embossing in the seats. 

The Middle East get the Patrol-both as a two- or four-door

So why does the Middle East get the Patrol-both as a two- or four-door, and the rest of the world doesn’t? Thierry Sabbagh, Nissan’s Managing Director in the Middle East, told Carbuzz that Super Safari’s longevity in the Middle East is due to its “deep-rooted heritage.” He continues that the Patrol “adds a modern look to the powerful performance and durability of the SUV – maintaining its credibility to be the ideal partner for an off-road driving adventure across the region.” In other words, he doesn’t have a clue why. 

We suppose if he knew why he’d be head of marketing or he’d be a VP at Nissan. Instead, he is tasked with providing no reason for the reason the Patrol is popular there and why it is not sold here. But we digress.

One reason we can readily see why the Patrol is so popular in the Middle East is price

One reason we can readily see is because of the price . The 2021 Patrol Super Safari lists for 171k AED, which translates to $47k in the US. Some may find that a bit high considering the Nissan Armada starts at just $1,500 more. But let’s get real; most Armadas are loaded up to the $65,000 to $80,000 price. That is getting close to twice the price of a Patrol.

We can lament further but instead look to the immediate future for a new Nissan Titan and its SUV offshoot Armada. Nissan has a lot of catching up to do as it has let its catalog of vehicles somewhat die on the vine. That in turn has caused a cash crunch that puts the future of the company in question. There is hope that Nissan can get its act together and start a product cadence of new, competitive vehicles that match feature to feature the best in each class.

E ver “softer” and car-like, more luxurious and exponentially complicated, modern SUVs have become more popular, but less capable, more fragile and have largely lost the authenticity and extensively rugged abilities the segment was previously known for. However, the breed is not completely extinct, with some manufacturers maintaining tough old school SUVs, including legacy models like the UAZ Hunter, and previous generation Nissan Patrol and Toyota Land Cruiser variants, alongside more modern successors.

UAZ’s second best known vehicle, the Hunter is essentially a civilian version of the iconic Russian 469 military off-roader first introduced in 1972. Developed and improved incrementally since, the Hunter is powered by a more modern 2.7-litre petrol four-cylinder engine, mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Producing 133BHP at 4,600rpm and 160lb/ft at 2,500rpm, it yields 90 per cent of maximum torque over an accessibly wide 2,000-4,500rpm band, and achieves a 130km/h top speed.

A highly capable and uncompromising off-roader with stiff body-on-chassis construction and tough all-round live axle suspension with front coil springs for improved ride and wheel travel in front, and rugged rear leaf springs, the Hunter operates rear wheels on-road, but can engage four-wheel-drive and low gear ratios for difficult low traction off-road conditions. Riding with 210mm ground clearance, it boasts excellent off-road angles including a 50° approach, and 500mm water fording capability.

A practical and utilitarian 5-door SUV with 1,830-litre cargo capacity and a functional and un-pretentious cabin, the Hunter’s compact dimensions make it something of a mountain goat that easily negotiates narrow and demanding routes and trails. Available in hard- or soft-top versions, the Hunter range includes a more capable Expedition version with improved 241mm clearance, 235/85R16 off-road tyres, electric winch, bull-bar, bottom-hinged tailgate, modified wheel-arches, reinforced bumpers and running boards with two crossbeams.

However, the Y61 never truly went away, and was available for fleet sales and in some markets throughout its 2010-2017 “wilderness years”. Utilitarian yet indulgent in character, the Y61’s chunky and upright design, tough build quality and off-road ability go unchanged, but its spacious and homely cabin receives modern infotainment features. Also unchanged is its metaphorically “bullet proof” 4.8-litre naturally-aspirated straight six-cylinder engine and 5-speed automatic gearbox. Smooth and progressive in operation and low-revving and abundant in delivery, it develops 276BHP at 4,800rpm and 332lb/ft torque at 3,600rpm, in the generous “gross” rating system.

Carrying its estimated 2.5-tonne mass at a reasonably brisk pace, the Y61 is a comfortable and relaxed on-road cruiser, dispatching long distances with a planted stability, forgiving ride, bank vault-like solidity and velvety refinement. In its element through inhospitable terrain, it rides with 215mm ground clearance and generous off-road angles, and benefits from a tough construction, while low gear ratios and a locking rear differential ensure progress over more extreme conditions.

Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Wagon GXL

Largely unchanged and in continuous production since 1984, the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 was mildly revised for a then more contemporary look in 2007, and again recently for the 2024 model year. Its latest aesthetic refresh includes notably a chunkier style, with a squared off bonnet and grille, and circular headlights with LED elements for a somewhat retro-inspired aesthetic, akin to the Toyota FJ Cruiser, rather than just being evolutionary in character.

That said, the Land Cruiser 70 remains a bona fide legacy model with the same tough body-on-frame construction and engineering, and rugged live-axle suspension design with front coil springs for comfort and long wheel-travel, and rear leaf springs for durability and authentic workhorse duties. Under its more stylized bonnet, the latest 70 retains its powerhouse 4.5-litre turbo-diesel V8 engine and 5-speed manual gearbox, but is available with 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder with automatic transmission.

Developing 202BHP at 3,400rpm and huge 317lb/ft torque throughout a low-revving 1,200-3,200rpm band, the Land Cruiser 70 normally drives its rear wheels, but can engage four-wheel-drive, low gear ratios and an optional differential lock for difficult off-road driving. Available in single and double cab pick-up, 3- and 5-door wagon or long wheelbase high roof 3-door “troop carrier” variants, it also receives a more modern, retro-styled and well-equipped cabin, and safety and infotainment tech.
