A great Day on the steam train and Hotel Stay

My Wife and i given a Virgin Experience Day by our children, The Steam Train experience in Spa Valley Railway was great. The Documents needs were down loaded so no queuing up for tickets, you could stay on the train back and forth all day. The staff was great, talking to them they were very knowledgeable. The hotel was warm, room was great - The food was good as service by one of the waiters was very good, nothing was to much, The only item was the desert was cold and should have been warm

Josie-anne Heneghan

Brilliant time. Friendly staff, although it was originally cancelled due to the weather they did their best to get it up and running and tbh he did! Was amazing and relaxing! We got extras too! Thank you so much we will definitely be coming back!

Amanda Morgan

Wonderful people great location

Stayed at the Mercure Hotel Tunbridge Wells. It was a beautiful hotel which was well maintained and extremely comfortable. All the staff were friendly. The Spa Valley Railway was amazing. We were able to get off and on all day and explore different locations.

Husbands 80th birthday

This was for my husbands 80th birthday brought for him by his family.lovely hotel Mercure Tonbridge Wells

Good day out

Enjoyed the experience of getting on a steam train again. The smell of the smoke and the sounds from the engine brought back many memories of my childhood.

Train was a bit disappointing no ones fault not enough volunteers to do service advertised, OK though. Hotel was fantastic, very clean, great friendly staff. Lovely food, good choice, nice atmosphere in dining room. Very comfortable bed, enough tea, coffee, biscuits and a chocolate, water too. Would definitely stay again

Andrew Lamb

Great little trip away with a ride on a steam train to a few lovely stops.

Fab trip to Tunbridge Wells & steam train

We had a lovely time doing this Virgin Experience. The weather was perfect. Really enjoyed the steam train. The Mercure hotel facilities were really good. The dinner and breakfast were delicious. I would totally recommend.

Amanda Dixon

Fantastic experience

Lovely day out , The train ride was amazing and very relaxing.

What a treat!

Bought as s gift from our children. Lovely little journey on the steam railway, takes about ½ hour each way with two short stops,(can go up and down the track as often as you want). The Mercure Hotel is about a 10 minute drive from the Railway with lots of parking spaces. Lovely big, clean, comfortable room with all the usual amenities, tea/coffee, shampoo/shower gel etc. Evening meal was nice, more like pub choices, but tasty. Choice of breakfast, as you would expect.

A very enjoyable day out

The Spa Valley Railway is fun to travel on but the journey does not take very long so you need to plan in something else to do, such as a walk or pub visit around the timetable. The Mercure Tunbridge Wells Hotel hotel was fine but being out of the town centre meant there was nothing much to do after dinner

It was a fabulous

Stayed at the mercure in Tondridge Wells staff where excellent and the food was exceptional . The next day went to the spa valley railway this was a lot of fun looking around a riding the trains up and down the line there was a buffet car so hot and cold drinks were available. All in all a great time.

Anne Barnett

Fabulous experience

This experience was a gift for my birthday. Loved the experience. Unfortunately weather was not good but but it didn’t dampen our spirits. Stayed at Mecure Hotel in Tunbridge Well. Great hotel, fantastic staff. Would definitely visit again.

Good experience

Fantastic 👍

Excellent, well worth the money we both had a lovely break. The spa Valley Railway was really good and the hotel was amazing. Definitely recommend

Ian Wildish

Well Chuffed !

Great experience, loved the train ride, just a pity that there is nothing to do when you arrive at Eridge. Perhaps a coffee shop at this stop might be a good idea as the only pub was closed for the day due to a wedding. Some information advising that there is nothing at the stop would also be helpful.

Weekend @Tunbridge Wells

Great hotel and location

Absolutely fabulous day out

The hotel was lovely and the staff so friendly and helpful. The steam train was just out of this world we lived every minute of the experience

Steam Train and Hotel dinner, bed & breakfast Deal

Great experience - steam train was relaxing as you could hop on and off or stay on train as it goes up and down the line. Lots of interesting information at the stations. Mercury Hotel in Tunbridge Wells had a comfortable room and both dinner and breakfast in particular had plenty of good choice. All staff were friendly and helpful. Are hoping to book again and definitely recommend.

We had a lovely time. Everyone was friendly and helpful, the food was very good - what more could we ask for. A very enjoyable weekend. Thank you

Wonderful experience

Can highly recommend. The hotel was clean and well presented. Staff were very welcoming. Dinner was really nice and breakfast had an excellent choice of hot and cold food. Really enjoyed the Spa Valley Railway experience. Whilst in Tunbridge Wells we visited The Pantiles which has a wide range of food and drink bars/cafes and also a convenient car park for tbe SVR (3 minute walk). This is a highly recommended experience.

Very good experience. Hotel was very good, as was the train rides.

Birthday and Father’s Day treat from my children

Thoroughly enjoyable steam train ride. Comfortable hotel in pleasant grounds.

Steam Train

SPA Steam Train and hotel stay Tunbridge Wells. Could not fault the steam excursion. The staff (all volunteers) were superb. Overall the hotel and service was very good but the restaurant service for dinner was questionable but the breakfast was really good. All in all a great weekend.

Excellent experience lovely staff and also the other passengers also hotel was nice

Steam train and overnight hotel.

Excellent day and evening Good experience. Steam train and overnight hotel Tunbridge wells

A Perfect Experience!

The Virgin Experience Days gift was from our family to celebrate our Ruby Wedding Anniversary. The Spa Valley Railway trip on the stream train from Tunbridge Wells West, through the High Weald countryside, to Eridge was spectacular. A pleasant stroll from Groombridge Railway Station for a delicious lunch at the Crown Inn on the Green was most enjoyable. Dinner and bed and breakfast at the Mercure Royal Tunbridge Hotel was outstanding. We thoroughly recommend the complete experience to others.

Overnight stay

A great time was had by us both. The hotel was first class and the food good. Staff very helpful and polite. Did not do the steam train as was not running the day we went but had a good day around tonbridge . All in all great.

Birthday Treat

Great day on the Spa Valley Railway, weather was good, lovely scenery, got to stop off at a local pub, great birthday present. The hotel was a few miles away from the railway, needed a car to get there. The hotel was comfortable, lovely setting. There was a wedding on that day so a bit upset that they changed the booking in the restaurant without advising me.

Christine and Michael

Best Christmas present ever!

Trip on Spa Valley Steam railway most enjoyable and interesting with great scenery. The welcome at the Mercure hotel, Tunbridge Wells from Receptionist Elena was first class and all the other staff could not be faulted. Comfortable room, great location. Lovely dinner and breakfast in the attractive dining room. First class experience.

Great experience

Given as a gift and thoroughly enjoyed

Spa Valley Railway

One of the most. enjoyable days we have had for quite some time,High Rocks was superb and a lovely pub/restaurant to take a break afterwards.

Brilliant time

We had a brilliant time on the Spa railway. Totally run by volunteers all very helpful. Love the steam train 🚂 chuffing along with the wonderful smell. At one stop was a pub called The Junction Inn well worth a visit. Lovely pub with friendly staff. You can get on and off the train at any station and have a wander round. Then on to Mercure hotel beautiful hotel that was clean and welcoming. They had a wedding on so kindly gave us a room in a quiet area. All in all a brilliant gift.

Charles Spencer

Virgin staff very helpful and friendly

A Christmas gift two years late

A lovely weekend break. We enjoyed the train trip and the hotel was comfortable and good food

Great weekend

Fun day out on the Spa Valley railway. Nice overnight stay at the Mecure Tunbridge.

Val'nBill

A Good day out

We really enjoyed the day on the Spa Valley Railway.

Very relaxing birthday experience

My wife and I really enjoyed our trip on the steam train on the Spa Valley railway; getting off and on at different stops gave us chance to explore. We would recommend Groombridge Place gardens in Summer. We had chance to stand in the cab and visit the heritage line's workshop. After difficulties actually booking our night at the Mercure Hotel Tunbridge Wells, we had a comfortable room and the staff were helpful. Our dinner was well cooked but breakfast items needed replenishing more efficiently

The Mercure Hotel in Pembury was clean, nice room, friendly staff. Plenty of choice of food, wine was expensive. Got the bus to Tunbridge Wells, the trip was a diesel not steam, depends on the day, was a lovely journey. Little museum, lots of history.

Had a really lovely day at the Spa Steam Railway. Totally relaxing and thoroughly enjoyable. Staff welcoming and knowledgeable.

Day of steam!

Very enjoyable day of on and off steam /diesel trains at Spa Valley Railway. Easy to book and lots to see during the day - even time for a quick wander through The Pantiles. Friendly and helpful staff. Then the experience continued with dinner, bed and breakfast at Mercure hotel. Large room, good food and a late check out made for a very relaxing couple of days.

Excellent birthday gift.

The over night stay at Mercury Tunbridge Wells Hotel was first class and I would highly recommend it. The Spa Valley Steam Railway trip could it be faulted, all personnel were very helpful and friendly.

The Dinner & Steam Train Experience

Lovely weather for the trip took the steam train to Eridge and then the diesel back to Groombridge. Visited Groombridge Place for the afternoon and then returned to Tunbridge Wells to the Hotel and Dinner. No complaints and a Thoroughly enjoable day.

A great weekend for my 70th birthday

Cannot fault this experience, Hotel Mercure, Tunbridge Wells was excellent, staff very friendly and helpful. Dining was excellent, plenty of choice. Very clean and plenty of open space in the gardens to enjoy a drink The Spa Valley railway was brilliant, great scenery, and staff were very friendly and didn't mind discussing their roles within the railway. I would recommend this experience to anyone.

If you’ve ever expressed a wish to see more of the British countryside, then now is your chance. As the new year blows its whistle and starts to leave the station, you can get yourself on board to see the UK like never before – from the comfort of an old-fashioned steam train.

Steam train experiences are smoking hot right now as more and more Brits are looking for luxury, with a hint of the Victorian era, in their days out. And whether you’re a train enthusiast or just fancy chugging through green fields, this list of experiences is the way to go.

A key British invention, the first steam locomotive debuted in 1804, created by inventor Richard Trevithick. By 1825, the first passenger train was up and running, carrying 450 people from Darlington to Stockton at 24kmh.

Nowadays, we rely on bullet trains and electric train travel - but even so, there’s something about the beauty and pace of the steam engine that we can’t quite leave behind. Last year, hundreds of people came out to see the iconic Flying Scotsman journey around the country, and of course, every September people head to King’s Cross and imagine themselves boarding the Hogwarts Express.

This list, put together by the RadioTimes.com team, includes steam train experiences from all over the country, from the rolling hills of the Lake District to the sea views of the Jurassic Coast. We’ve also included trips with added bonuses like afternoon tea or a full English breakfast, just to complete the patriotic experience.

The cabins have new lightings, a USB charging point, and a wardrobe and a disabled accessible room. Sleeper berth passengers use the fast class lounge waiting for facilities at Paddington. All passengers wake up to an in-room breakfast of your choice. The sleeper café has snacks and other alcoholic drinks.  The sleeper train has single-bed cabins, twin-bed cabins, and reclining seats. The Caledonian Sleeper Train

The highland sleeper leaves London and stops at Watford, Crewe, and Preston for passengers to board and arrives at Edinburgh six hours after leaving London. The highland routes have great scenery on the Scottish side, especially the London- Fort William route which has been voted the most scenic train ride severally. The lowland sleeper leaves London stopping at Watford for pickup and Carlisle where passengers can alight.

The Caledonian sleeper has three accommodation levels. The first class or single room is air-conditioned. Passengers travelling in first class have priority access to the lounge car if you want a drink or a meal. They offer breakfast in bed if you want. There is an in-room washbasin, complimentary toiletries, and towel. The twin room for the standard class provides accommodation for two people. It is ideal when you have a travel companion. The amenities include in-room washbasin and towels, complimentary sleep pack and an adjoining room for families. The sleeper seat is an economical way to travel, and you can work until late in the night and drift off to sleep. You will have personal reading lights and counter service for meals and drinks. Sleeper trains are becoming an endangered species especially with the introduction of high-speed trains. The two trains have held on strong by introducing modern amenities.

The flexible ticket is fully refundable before the train leaves. Most tickets are one way, and you may need to take a day train on your return.

Romantic overnight train trips: UK based journeys to swoon over!

Can you imagine having a romantic meal in London, perhaps then seeing a show and then whisking away your partner to another part of the UK on a gorgeous overnight train? Swoon!

I love train travel in the UK and find the slow, meandering pace romantic in its own right. But overnight trains are something else. Transporting you to a magical place while you sleep? I’m sold!

These journeys would make a fabulous honeymoon, engagement or anniversary trip. Or if you’re reading this around Valentines Day and planning an even better one next year – you can book this romantic break in advance!

There are two general areas of the country that provide overnight sleeper trains and both of them go from (or to) London. The main one that people think about is Scotland but you can also get a romantic sleeper train to Cornwall as well!

Read on to find out more about each of these romantic overnight train trips and more importantly how to book!

Waverley Station in edinburgh is the destination of many romantic overnight train trips from London

Useful booking info

Book early – It’s really important to book your sleeper train journeys early. While booking platforms might show availability when you’re in the planning stage remember that they might be just showing the upright seats as available. Not quite so romantic as the cabins!

You can book 12 months in advance for Scotland and 3 months for Cornwall.

Where to book

I recommend booking direct where possible – you can use the Trainline website , but sometimes it will just send you direct, especially if you want the upgraded sleeping options.

Caledonian Sleeper – for traveling overnight to Scotland

Great Western Railway – for Cornwall on the Night Riviera

Trainline – Good if you’re returning by a regular day train or if you just want to book standard seats

Romantic overnight train trips in the UK

What makes these trips special, I think, is that you wake up in a completely different place from London. Watching the sunrise from the comfort of a luxury sleeping cabin is an experience to cherish!

I’ve concentrated here on taking the trains from London, but of course you can do the journey the other way allowing you to spend some time with the bright city lights of London as your destination!

Romantic sleeper train to Scotland – The Caledonian Sleeper

This is the one that most people think of when looking into sleeper trains from London. The difference in the starting point to the end destination is striking and there’s nothing more romantic than watching the sun rise around the brooding Scottish landscape.

You actually have a few different destinations that you can choose from when planning a romantic train trip to Scotland so no matter your plans, your romantic ideas or your likes there’ll be a destination for you.

The Caledonian Sleeper will take you to any of the following places (plus more stops available on each route):

hotels overlooking edinburgh castle

Leave London at 11.50pm Arrive in Edinburgh at 7.30am

The capital of Edinburgh and while it’s busy, it’s still a lot less so than London. Perfect for finding some romantic spots or enjoying a hotel with a view of Edinburgh castle .

Romantic spots to take your partner include exploring the side streets off the Royal Mile , Dean Village or perhaps even taking a picnic to Princes Street Gardens.

Leave London at 9.15pm, arrive in Aberdeen at 7.50am

Probably not on many people’s radars as a place to whisk someone off to for a romantic break but if you’re looking to stay away from midges in the summer then a trip to Scotland’s east coast is a good idea! The Granite city has lots of romantic dining spots and places to enjoy on a night out.

There’s lots of romantic ideas nearby to explore as well including Balmoral castle, the Speyside whisky trail or Dunnotar castle.

Leave London at 11.50pm, arrive in Glasgow at 7.22am

Glasgow is a city with so much to do and see so you’ll never be short of ideas here. You have theatre shows, romantic restaurants and plenty of museums to explore too.

Leave London at 9.15pm, arrive in Inverness at 8.42am

Inverness is just one gorgeous Highland option available and great for exploring the wonderful Loch Ness or maybe taking your partner around some of the Outlander locations up here.

You could even choose to hire a car and explore the remote and stunning NC500 road !

bridge and hills on Isle of Skye

Fort William

Leave London at 9.15pm, arrive in Fort William at 9.57am

Another highland option and a great place to enjoy walks near Ben Nevis and many of the adventure sports that take place around there. It’s a good jumping off point for many of Scotland’s islands too, including the Isle of Skye .

Harry Potter fans will love to get on the real life steam train at Fort William which goes over the viaduct at Glenfinnan – yup the one from the films! The Harry Potter train in Scotland is another romantic journey in itself!

Recommended sleeping options for a romantic Scotland train trip

cshow

You have a number of options for sleeping on the Caledonian Sleeper train – the ones I recommend for a special trip are the Caledonian Double or the Club Room. These are the premium options and come with a host of extras such as en suite toilet, breakfast and lounge access.

Here are some points to note about the overnight train from London to Scotland:

  • The train leaves London from Euston station
  • The times are slightly different on Fridays and Sundays. There’s no Saturday service.
  • They have a double cabin – perfect for the romantic overnight train trip!
  • You get lounge access at the stations where available with club room and double cabins.
  • Breakfast is available – included with club room and double cabins.
  • Cheaper options are available, including seat only

Booking tips:

You can buy tickets direct at Caledonian Sleeper or at Trainline.com

Train tickets and the rooms can be booked up to 12 months in advance – you may find that it’s cheaper to buy well in advance too.

Railcards can make some journeys cheaper. Not all rooms attract discounts but some do on the more basic rooms and seated options.

tamar bridge overnight sleeper train cornwall

Romantic overnight train to Cornwall from London – The Night Riviera

The other option for an overnight train trip, with a romantic edge, is to go to Cornwall in the far south west of the country. Think romantic coves, bracing coastal walks and intimate restaurants in Cornwall’s historic fishing villages. There are loads of romantic things to do in Cornwall !

After leaving the bright lights of London you’ll wake up and see some of the most beautiful landscapes and coastline of Devon before crossing the Tamar river at the historic Royal Albert bridge, built by Brunel in the 1800s, and going into Cornwall. You’ll travel through the rolling countryside and hills of Cornwall before seeing the magnificent St Michael’s Mount as you pull up in Penzance.

St Michael's Mount is what you'll see when you arrive on an overnight train from London

The train offers two different kinds of cabin – a single occupancy and a twin occupancy. There are also airline style seats that you can book. These aren’t very comfortable though and not recommended for a special trip!

Here are some points to note about the overnight train from London to Cornwall:

  • The train leaves London from Paddington station
  • If you have booked a cabin you can use the first class lounge in Paddington from 9pm. Penzance and Truro also have lounges open an hour before departure. All have showers.
  • It departs from London at 11.45pm on Monday to Fridays and 11.50pm on Sunday. Arriving in Penzance at 8am.
  • Return journeys leave Penzance at 9.45pm and arrive in London at 5.04am. If you have a cabin you can stay on board until 6.45am
  • If you have booked a cabin you’ll also get a light breakfast.
  • There is no Saturday service.

You can buy tickets on Great Western Railway (GWR) direct or at Trainline.com

Train tickets aren’t released too far in advance, around 3 months – the website states what dates you can book up to. It’s advisable to book as soon as you can to get the twin occupancy cabins.

If the website only asks you what direction of seas you want then you’ll know that there are no cabins available – try another night.

There is often a choice of 2 sleeper trains. One of them will have a change and is probably not what you want in the middle of the night/morning! Be sure to choose the one with no changes.

Railcards will often make the journey a lot cheaper. A Two Together railcard is what we use and perfect for romantic trips.

8 Most Scenic Train Rides in the U.K.

From the countryside to charming seaside towns, these U.K. trains offer beautiful views along the way.

overnight steam train trips uk

From adventurous cross-country journeys to luxurious rides in the world's most beautiful destinations , there's something truly romantic about train travel. It transports passengers to a simpler time, highlighting the joys of slow travel and, of course, showcasing beautiful views along the way.

Luckily, exciting train trips exist around the world, including the U.K., which is home to some of the best, grandest, and most scenic railways. So, if you're seeking a memorable getaway with stunning countryside, seaside town, and city vistas, check out one of these amazing train trips in the U.K.

British Pullman, A Belmond Train, London

Perhaps the most indulgent way to explore England's quaint countryside , Belmond's British Pullman transports passengers back to the Roaring '20s in its storied art deco carriages. A round-trip day trip, the train loops from London Victoria to the historic Chatsworth House , Highclere Castle (of Downton Abbey fame), and Belmond's Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons . The food is delicious and includes seasonal meats, vegetables, and indulgent desserts. For design fans, the Wes Anderson carriage blends art nouveau style, symmetrical lines, and pastel and jewel tones.

Coleraine to Londonderry

If you're pressed for time, the route from Coleraine to Londonderry (or vice versa) takes just 40 minutes. A bog-standard commuter line, the train — once dubbed "one of the most beautiful rail journeys in the world" by avid train lover Michael Palin — passes through some of Northern Ireland's loveliest spots . On one side, idyllic pastures and the deep blue sea fill nature's canvas, and on the other, the River Bann roars as far as the eye can see alongside emerald mountains. Tunnels are aplenty, as are period homes, churches, and seaside towns . Castlerock is well worth exploring for its pretty village, and if it isn't too windy, a picnic on the beach. As for what to do in Coleraine, the town itself is steeped in history — the Mountsandel Fort is home to Ireland's most ancient human settlement — but we recommend hopping on a bus and continuing on to Causeway Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage site with wonders like the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge and Game of Thrones- famous Giant's Causeway.

Royal Scotsman, A Belmond Train, Scotland

Say hello to Scotland's luxury sleeper train . With space for only 24 passengers, the vibe on board feels intimate and luxurious. En-suite cabins, tasty food (expect lots of Scottish salmon), spa treatments with some of the U.K.'s chicest independent brands, and an observation car with a veranda are just a few standout features. Passengers will see landmarks like the Kyle of Lochalsh and beautiful Cairngorms National Park , a favorite of Queen Elizabeth II. Daydreaming on board once the afternoon tea service hits is mandatory as you snake through Fort William, with spellbinding panoramas of Ben Nevis (the U.K.'s highest mountain) and Arisaig coastline. Luxury amenities aside, there are plenty of opportunities for adventure, too: hiking the gorges of Aviemore, enjoying windy walks on the Isle of Bute, canoeing on the famous Loch Ness; and clay pigeon shooting at the Rothiemurchus estate.

Jacobite Steam Train

It's no surprise that this now-iconic Scottish train is an Instagram favorite — the route from Fort William to Mallaig showcases an otherworldly mix of breathtaking U.K. views (think: craggy mountains, giant lakes, and the photogenic, 21-arch Glenfinnan Viaduct, famous for its starring role in the Harry Potter films). What you see depends on the time of year. Come summer, expect fields of green and the most luminous of sunsets, while winter brings frozen rivers and giant trees glistening with dagger-like icicles. Tip: Book a seat in advance as they can sell out fast.

Settle—Carlisle Railway

RORY FULLER/TRAVEL + LEISURE

Often overlooked by Brits, the Settle-Carlisle Railway runs through 73 miles of glorious countryside, showcasing ruggedly beautiful and remote spots along the way. The highlights come courtesy of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, home to fragrant heather, wildflowers, dry stone walls, and rolling hills. The stations here are just as beautiful (imagine charming pit stops flecked with hanging, posy-stuffed baskets), and the surroundings include green fields dotted with sheep. Another reason to hop aboard? This route, which launched in 1876, is one of England's last great Victorian journeys.

St. Ives Bay Line

Rory Fuller/Travel + Leisure

This one might only last 10 minutes, but it's still worth it, and you can ride it back and forth as many times as you'd like to make a day of it. Opened in 1877, this stretch of track zooms along the beauteous Cornish coast, a treasure trove of coves, azure seas, white-sand beaches, and beautiful coastal towns once adored by the likes of novelist Virginia Woolf, the odd celebrity, and more. Tip: Sit on the right side of the train for the best views, including a glimpse of the wispy sand dunes that eventually blend into the sparkly waters.

Snowdon Mountain Railway

Although it's more a tourist attraction and necessity for hikers in need of a little help scaling the beautiful Snowdon mountain, this Victorian narrow-gauge railway is still worth a ride, if just for the breezy views. The train departs every 30 minutes from Llanberis station, and it takes roughly one hour to reach the summit. Along the way, have your cameras ready to capture centuries-old farmhouses, ancient walls, the odd goat, and the towering Ceunant Mawr waterfall, which plunges more than 100 feet into a cavernous gorge. As it's pretty old, part of the way is blocked off, so the train currently only runs as far as Clogwyn. There, you'll be able to jump off and walk the rest of the way to Hafod Eryri (closed until 2023) to take in the panoramic vistas. If you're lucky, a clear day will allow you to see all the way to the coast of Ireland.

Caledonian Sleeper

Believe it or not, this is one of only two sleeper train services left in the U.K., connecting London to Edinburgh via the scenic Lowlander and Highlander routes that weave through Scotland . But this is no ordinary ride. Thanks to a 2019 makeover, this train is more like a hotel on rails: There are cabins with snuggly double beds, swish en-suite bathrooms, and for a dose of extra atmosphere, dimmable lights. A rather fancy dining cart ensures bellies are fed for the 500-mile, eight-hour journey. Choose from all the usual contenders, plus Scottish delicacies such as haggis and tatties (potatoes) served with a whiskey cream sauce. It's also worth waking up early to catch dawn breaking over the Northumbria countryside.

The Charm Of UK Railways

The beauty of train travel in the UK owes much to the diversity of its landscapes and destinations. As your train meanders through the country, scenes shift from vivid green hills dotted with sheep to craggy coastal cliffs to quaint villages and towns. Even the shortest routes promise discoveries and photo opportunities around each bend.

Adding to the allure is the rich railway history that echoes at grand stations in London, Edinburgh, and beyond. Generations of travelers have hopped on iconic lines like the West Highland Line and Settle-Carlisle Railway. The Jacobite Steam Train, a historic locomotive, furthers the old-world ambiance with its vintage style. Yet contemporary comforts and flexibility aren’t forgotten either. Rail ticketing sites like Split My Fare or a similar reputable one make snagging affordable. Now, embrace getting lost in each of these destinations thanks to an extensive rail network that can efficiently whisk you around this compact yet endlessly enchanting island.

The Jacobite Steam Train (Fort William to Mallaig, Scotland)

All aboard for an authentic taste of retro rail travel on the Jacobite Steam Train. This historical locomotive transports you on an 84-mile journey along one of Scotland’s most dramatically beautiful lines – the West Highland Railway from Fort William to Mallaig. Romantic countryside, mysterious lochs, and the striking Scottish coast unfurl outside your window on this unforgettable trip into nostalgia.

As its pistons churn and whistle blows, the Jacobite Steam Train conjures images of early 20th-century travel. This antiquated train has starred as the Hogwarts Express in numerous Harry Potter films, adding to its mythical allure. The train, packed with railway enthusiasts and Potterheads, passes verdant valleys and across the 21-arched Glenfinnan Viaduct overlooking lovely Loch Shiel. Look out too for the remote “Hogwarts” railway station stop used for filming.

The endpoint at Mallaig is a lively harbor town where you can sample fresh seafood before catching the return steam train or ferry along the turbulent Road to the Isles. Between the locomotive’s billowing smoke and distinct scenery, the Jacobite’s mix of retro magic and Celtic wilderness cast a memorable spell.

The Caledonian Sleeper (Various routes in Scotland)

For comfortable overnight rail travel through the Scottish Highlands, step aboard the Caledonian Sleeper. These handsome trainsets whisk you to northern destinations like Inverness, Aberdeen, and Fort William while you sleep in your berth. Routes typically depart around midnight from London’s Euston Station. Relax in the lounge car with a nightcap before retiring to your cabin. Wake up to a hot breakfast and mountain views as the train reaches destinations like foodie hub Inverness or the gateway to the Isle of Skye at Fort William/Mallaig. Disembark refreshed and ready to explore after your scenic overnight journey courtesy of Caledonian Sleeper trains.

The West Highland Line (Glasgow to Mallaig, Scotland)

The West Highland Line is considered one of the world’s most epic railway routes, transporting travelers on a 156-mile journey through the majestic Scottish Highlands. As the train winds its way from Glasgow up to the remote fishing town of Mallaig on Scotland’s dramatic west coast, it passes by tranquil lochs, towering mountains, gorgeous beaches, and abundant wildlife. Throughout its winding path, the West Highland Line allows passengers to experience ever-changing vistas of the region’s awe-inspiring natural beauty.

Leaving behind Glasgow’s urban bustle, the West Highland Line soon steers you into the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. Look out for Ben Lomond’s peak rising majestically as you curve along sparkling Loch Lomond, Britain’s largest lake. The train then heads north via Crianlarich into Rannoch Moor’s wild, wind-swept expanse dotted with Highland cattle. Your journey concludes amid salty sea air as fishing boats bob in Mallaig harbor and ferries stand ready to continue westward to Skye.

The North Wales Coast Line (Crewe to Holyhead, Wales)

Hugging the Irish Sea, the North Wales Coast Line offers a scenic train voyage along one of Britain’s most stunning shorelines. The 130-mile route connects English towns and cities to the port town of Holyhead, where ferries continue the journey onward to Ireland.

Leaving behind the English countryside around Crewe, the railway soon enters Wales, offering sweeping views of mudflats and coastal marshes. As the train threads through seaside resort towns like Llandudno Junction, the Great Orme peninsula juts out majestically into the ocean ahead. Further along, foaming surf crashes against the base of towering limestone cliffs, creating postcard-perfect vistas.

One highlight is bouncing along the coast above picture-perfect sandy beaches backing snow-capped Snowdonia peaks. Historic castle towns like Conwy, Harlech, and Caernarfon slide by, allowing glimpses of imposing medieval fortifications. The line threads across the Menai Strait on the epic Britannia Bridge before reaching the journey’s end at Holyhead with its blend of small-town charm and Irish Sea ferry activity.

Passing over the rugged backbone of northern England, the 72-mile Settle-Carlisle railway is considered one of the UK’s most stunning historic rail routes. Opening in 1876 to connect Yorkshire with Scotland, this railway transports travelers through the dramatic Yorkshire Dales and North Pennines landscapes today.

Your journey begins in the quaint market town of Settle, nestled in the Ribble Valley. Soon, the train starts its challenging climb into the Pennine hills, snaking through green valleys and across ancient stone viaducts. Marvel at the 24 lofty arches of Ribblehead Viaduct towering above rough highland terrain grazed by sheep.

Further highlights are stopping at remote “request stop” stations like Dent, England’s highest mainline station perched at 1,150 feet. As the train winds its way northwest through Northumberland National Park, the historic city of Carlisle emerges with its imposing 12th-century castle that once guarded the English-Scottish border.

With its postcard-perfect countryside and heritage appeal, the Settle-Carlisle railway promises a quintessential train trip into the heart of rural England.

Practical Tips For Epic Train Adventures

Going aboard an iconic UK train journey is an incredible way to experience the history, landscape, and culture of Britain. But a bit of planning goes a long way to ensure your rail adventures run smoothly. Follow these practical tips when booking your epic ride on the rails:

  • The extensive rail network connecting England, Scotland, and Wales can get confusing, especially for first-timers. Doing some research ahead of time helps guarantee you catch suitable trains between destinations.
  • Get oriented with train route maps and plan your itinerary. Knowing essentials like departure stations, connections, and arrival times avoids headaches.
  • Check train company websites for current schedules and book tickets early, even if non-refundable. Snagging cheap fares often requires booking 12 weeks or more prior to travel.
  • Consider purchasing Brit Rail passes, which allow flexible travel on consecutive or non-consecutive days, making hopping on and off trains a breeze.
  • Download the National Rail app and sign up for updates from train operators to stay current with schedules or delay notices.

With stunning landscapes whooshing by your window, you’ll want to capture incredible photos without reflections and glare spoiling the shot.

  • Choose a window seat facing the direction of travel for the best angle on that perfect click as the train rounds a bend.
  • Carry polarized sunglasses to cut window glare and a microfiber cloth to wipe away smudges.

London Paddington trains to be disrupted on Sunday

Roger Smith avatar

Early morning services from London Padding station on Sunday, 12 May will be cancelled or delayed as overnight engineering work will extend beyond the usual finishing time.

Overnight engineering work will be taking place between London Paddington and Reading , and work to renew tracks on the approach to London Paddington will continue until 08:00 to provide sufficient time for the work to be completed.

The signalling outside London Paddington

Throughout this week, work has been taking place overnight on improvements to the track that enhance reliability and performance.

However, to complete the work, a number of sleepers require replacing to avoid the imposition of a temporary speed restriction.

The additional engineering work will affect the following Great Western Railway and Elizabeth Line services:

  • 06:20 Reading to London Paddington will not run.
  • 07:36 London Paddington to Great Malvern starts at Oxford
  • 07:38 London Paddington to Didcot Parkway will start at Reading
  • 07:51 London Paddington to Penzance will be delayed by about ten minutes
  • 08:00 London Paddington to Exeter St. Davids will be delayed by about three minutes
  • Elizabeth Line services between London Paddington and Ealing Broadway will not run until 09:00.

Anyone intending to travel before 08:00 should plan to use London Underground or bus services. Information on alternative routes can be found using Transport for London;s which can be found online at https://tfl.gov.uk/plan-a-journey/

For those passengers using mainline services, journeys can be checked in advance a https://www.gwr.com or with National Rail Enquiries at https://www.nationalrail.co.uk .

During the recent Bank Holiday, services out of London Euston station and St. Pancras International were both severely affected by engineering work

We're sorry for the inconvenience this work may cause passengers on Sunday morning. The need for this additional work was identified whilst our teams were carrying out planned track renewals overnight this week as part of our £140m Thames Valley Performance Improvement Plan and has to be completed before services can operate. As services will start later and may be subject to change, it's important that those planning to travel via London Paddington on Sunday morning plan their journey in advance.
