Take a wander through the Fort Charles Museum , which showcases artifacts like pottery and weaponry and the impact of the infamous earthquake of 1692 that destroyed the city.

Plus there’s no shortage of nightly activities here at any of the street’s numerous entertainment spots.

11. Portland

Best place to explore natural attractions

Portland, Jamaica, boasts an abundance of breathtaking natural attractions. Somerset Falls is a popular waterfall that's much more secluded than Reach Falls. Visitors can take guided boat tours (less than five minutes) through the rainforest to reach the main waterfall, passing through caves and grottos along the way. The entry fee is US$20 and includes the boat ride.

Portland is also home to tons of beaches, including Frenchman's Cove , Winnifred Beach  and Boston Bay Beach , which is popular among surfers. And let's not forget about bamboo rafting along the Rio Grande River, and the beautiful Blue Lagoon, made famous by the 1980-film of the same name starring Brooke Shields.

12. Dunn’s River Falls

Best place to explore a water attraction

Dunn's River Falls , standing at 55m-high (180ft), is among Jamaica's most stunning natural attractions. What sets Dunn's River Falls apart is its incredible natural staircase-like formation, where water rushes over terraced limestone rocks, creating a series of cascading pools and small waterfalls.

The climb to the top can be tiring, but it's worth it to see the views of the entire falls and the surrounding rainforest from the peak.

Planning tip: The entry fee is $25 per adult and $17 per child. There’s no separate cost to have a licensed falls guide to accompany you on your climb to the top. If you plan to climb, be sure to bring water shoes as the rocks are slippery.

The mixture of spring water and seawater at the Blue Lagoon is what makes it so special, giving a distinctive azure hue that changes in intensity throughout the day. The clarity of the water is unmatched, allowing swimmers to see straight to the bottom of the 55m-deep (180ft) lagoon, where colorful marine life and submerged rock formations can be spotted.

Local tip: Boat captains offer rides from Blue Lagoon to Monkey Island, or Pellew Island, a small uninhabited island off the coast with great snorkeling opportunities.

14. Lime Cay

Best place for a secluded beach day

Most beaches across the island will be populated with locals and tourists on any day of the week. But this isn’t the case at Lime Cay , an uninhabited island off the coast of Port Royal, with a pristine white sand beach and clear turquoise waters.

As well-known as Lime Cay is, on an average day, you’ll only run into a handful of other visitors to the island. During the week, its laid-back atmosphere makes it feel like your own private paradise.

Planning tip: It’s only accessible by boat — fishers at the dock at Port Royal do charters to the island costing between US$20–25 roundtrip per group (negotiate if it’s a solo trip). The best time to enjoy the serenity of Lime Cay is during the week. On weekends, particularly on Sundays, it turns into a hot spot for party and boat enthusiasts. Bring your own food and drinks.

15. South Coast and Treasure Beach

Best place for seafood

The numerous top-rated seafood restaurants on Jamaica’s South Coast make it the island's best dining destination.

Every Jamaican will give rave reviews of Little Ochie , a rustic open-air restaurant in the fishing village of Alligator Pond, renowned for its jerk fish that’s cooked over open pimento wood and seasoned with green onions, garlic, and a mixture of herbs and spices.

Another popular fishing village is Treasure Beach, home to the Jack Sprat restaurant at Jakes Hotel, where the curry snapper and jerk crab draw visitors from all across the island. Fresh lobster, shrimp and conch, are also served when in season.

18 Best Things To Do in Jamaica

Jamaica is a picturesque destination with sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters and breathtaking mountain views surrounded by an abundance of flora and fauna. But, there is more to this Caribbean destination than meets the eye.

The island has an

Dunn's River Falls and Park (Ocho Rios) Dunn's River Falls and Park (Ocho Rios)

If you're staying in Ocho Rios or just visiting Jamaica for the day from a cruise ship , travelers insist you allot a couple of hours to climb the Dunn's River Falls. You can take a guided climb of the waterfall, hike a trail alongside it or just recline and relax at the base of the falls.

Vacationers say that climbing along the rocks to the top of the falls isn't rigorous, but it can be slippery. Recent visitors said you can keep your footing by wearing water shoes. Given that you'll be splashed, then soaked by the cascading water on the ascent – and some say it's a bit dangerous – it's best if you leave your young kids (or any vacation buddies who aren't strong swimmers) at the foot of the falls. The attraction recommends allotting about 60 minutes to climb the falls.

Seven Mile Beach (Negril) Seven Mile Beach (Negril) free

Crystal-blue waters and coral sands await you at this western beach in Negril. As its name suggests, Seven Mile has plenty of space for you to find a spot, but you'll share the area with a few adults-only resorts and those who like to sunbathe in the nude. The sandy spread becomes a popular party spot when the sun goes down.

Recent travelers said Seven Mile features the clearest water they've ever seen, with others calling it perfect. Still, similar to a lot of Jamaican beaches, Seven Mile sometimes has vendors who can often be persistent in hopes of selling everything from crafts to beer to fresh lobster. A simple "no, thank you" will often suffice, but don't be surprised if a vendor is unrelenting.

Blue Hole (Ocho Rios) Blue Hole (Ocho Rios)

Named for its deep turquoise, crystal-clear water, the Blue Hole is located a little over a mile from the heart of Ocho Rios. Past visitors have said a trip to this natural wonder is a must-do experience.

Nature lovers may enjoy the breathtaking views or the hikes to visit the various waterfalls found throughout the site. Travelers who want to get their adrenaline pumping can swing like Tarzan into the waters below or cliff dive.

Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park

Along Jamaica's eastern edge, you'll find the majestic Blue and John Crow Mountains, the fountainhead of the fragrant Blue Mountain Coffee and a scenic masterpiece for nature lovers. In fact, in 2015 it was named a UNESCO World Heritage site. Most vacationers' experience with the Blue Mountains is limited to sipping the coffee, but if you have the time and the stamina, journey to the area to behold the mountains or to hike through them.

Hiking and camping in Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park is strenuous and not for the faint of heart. Most hikers prefer to climb the mountain early to catch the sunrise. The most challenging part of the trail to the top, known as Jacob's Ladder, is the narrowest and steepest of the hike. The peak of the range rises to an altitude of 7,402 feet, and the higher you climb, the craggier the terrain and the cooler and more humid the weather. Remember to dress in layers for your hike, and bring plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Green Grotto Caves Green Grotto Caves

Named for the green algae that covers its walls, the Green Grotto is a natural wonder. Located between Ocho Rios and Montego Bay near Discovery Bay, the caves are filled with stalactites and stalagmites.

The caves are believed to be the dwellings of the first inhabitants of the island – Arawak Indians also known as the Tainos. The grounds also served as a hiding place for colonial-era Spaniards, runaway enslaved people and smugglers. In recent years, the caves were even a nightclub.

Boston Beach (Port Antonio) Boston Beach (Port Antonio)

Sitting less than 10 miles east of Port Antonio's town center, Boston Beach is known for its clear waters' surfer-friendly waves and the shore's soft, powder-white sands. But even more prominently, Boston Beach is renowned for its delicious Jamaican eats. This beach claims to be the birthplace of jerk seasoning, so come hungry and ready to taste-test at nearby eateries, which feature jerk foods.

The water here can get a bit rough, which is why it's a favored spot among surfers. But for that reason, it's not the best beach for young children.

The lagoon is temporarily closed for rehabilitation. It is expected to reopen June 1.

Travelers recommend this central Port Antonio lagoon for its breathtaking water and surrounding gardens. Like its name suggests, the Blue Lagoon is a vibrant cobalt color that's worth snapping a few pictures and swimming a few laps around. The water is cool, very deep (approximately 200 feet, according to some reports) and a mix of saltwater and freshwater fed by a nearby mineral spring. Throughout the day as the angle of the sun changes, the water appears to be different shades of blue. You'll find the lagoon about 5 miles east of Port Antonio.

Located on the southern coast of Jamaica, Treasure Beach provides a photogenic backdrop featuring serene crystal-clear waters, rocky shorelines and fresh seafood. Past beachgoers say it's a hidden treasure.

The six-mile stretch of land comprises of five bays (Billy's, Frenchman's, Calabash, Fort Charles and Great Bay) and four public beaches (Calabash Bay, Old Wharf, Great Bay and Frenchman's). While the area may not be plentiful in amenities as other beaches in Jamaica, the area is ideal for swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing. There are plenty of eateries located around the area.

Doctor's Cave Beach (Montego Bay) Doctor's Cave Beach (Montego Bay)

Doctor's Cave is one of the most visited beaches in Montego Bay. It does charge an entry fee, which can serve as a deterrent for some. Many, however, are willing to fork over the dollars to enter Doctor's Cave, play in the quiet waves, appreciate the safety of lifeguards and have ready access to the available water sports, changing rooms and beach bars. The beach's popularity means that you're likely to encounter crowds (especially on days when cruise ships are in Montego Bay's port) and high food prices.

A trip to Doctor's Cave means you'll have the opportunity to rent equipment for snorkeling, kayaking, riding water scooters and other aquatic activities. Umbrellas, towels and beach chairs are also available for rent. Some travelers were upset by all the nickeling and diming, even though they admit to having a great experience.

White Witch Golf Course (Montego Bay) White Witch Golf Course (Montego Bay)

The 18 holes of the White Witch Golf Course sprawl across 200 acres of the Rose Hall Estate . Designed by revered course architects Robert von Hagge and Rick Baril, White Witch is praised for its stunning landscape and helpful staff. In fact, 16 of its holes feature ocean views. If you're a beginner or moderate golfer, White Witch will likely be challenging for you -- its hilly terrain has been described as a "roller coaster" by some travelers.

Some golfers recommend scheduling early tee times to beat the heat. The golf course does not normally have tee times beyond 1 p.m. Travelers should note the Rose Hall golf courses (White Witch Golf Course and Cinnamon Hill Golf Course) switch annually on seasonal closures. Check the website to learn more.

Croydon in the Mountains Croydon in the Mountains

Located on the foothills of the Catadupa Mountains, the Croydon Plantation is surrounded by breathtaking views of the Jamaican countryside and an abundance of fruit and coffee beans grow on the land.

The plantation was also the birthplace of one of Jamaica's heroes: Samuel Sharpe. Sharpe led the 1831 Slave Rebellion. This revolt eventually led to the 1834 Abolition Bill, passed by the British Parliament. Slavery was abolished in 1838.

Take some time out of your sunning and swimming to pay homage to a musical legend. Located in Kingston, this museum occupies the former home of Bob Marley. Inside, you'll see personal artifacts, Marley's personal recording studio and his bedroom, among other highlights. Be sure to snap a few photos by the surrounding fence, decked out in Rastafarian "ice, gold and green" (or, red, yellow and green).

Keep in mind that this site can get very busy, which made the experience disappointing for some. Still, others said their tour guides made Marley and his music come alive.

This course is an 18-hole, par-71 championship green designed by architect Ralph Plummer. Recent travelers recognize it for its beauty alongside the Caribbean Sea. Some also highlight the fantastic golf clinics that the course offers.

As evidence of the green's notable landscape and challenging holes, Tryall has been host to several golf championships, including The Johnnie Walker World Championship and the Mazda Championship.

YS Falls YS Falls

YS Falls is a scenic natural attraction located in southwest Jamaica. The area touts a seven-tiered waterfall surrounded by lush gardens and natural swimming pools. The estate where the falls are located on was once a working sugarcane farm. When sugar production dwindled, the land was turned into a stud farm – raising and breeding thoroughbreds, which remains today.

In 1992, the estate opened the falls as a tourist attraction. Guests can climb the stone staircase to the main waterfall or rope swing into one of the natural pools created by the cascading waters. YS suggests travelers bring water shoes because the rocks can be slippery. For adventure-seekers, explore the YS Falls by zip lining 40 feet above the area.

Rose Hall Great House Rose Hall Great House

The Rose Hall Great House is a restored 18th-century historic dwelling located in Montego Bay. The house is just one of the many attractions sprawled across the nearly 6,660-acre former plantation. It's here you'll also find the White Witch Golf Course .

The historic property has an intriguing backstory. Rose Hall was once the home of Annee Palmer, given the nickname "White Witch of Rose Hall." Local lore rumors Palmer killed three of her husbands and took several enslaved lovers, one of which may have betrayed and ultimately killed her. The fabricated story was enshrined in Herbert Delisser's book "White Witch of Rose Hall," but it hasn't deterred tourgoers from learning more about the great house. In fact, past visitors say the tour is intriguing and educational.

Appleton Estate Appleton Estate

Jamaican rum production began in the 1650s when the English fermented sugar cane to create the versatile liquor. Appleton Estate began distilling rum about 100 years after the first rum production. Located in Siloah, the company chose the Nassau Valley area for production because of its karst landscape, which includes limestone hill formations, caves and underground water sources. What does the landscape have to do with rum production? Everything. The water that flows through this area is filtered by limestone, which helps to soften the liquid. The filtered water plus molasses used in fermentation helps create the unique flavor found in Jamaican rum. Today, the company produces about 10 million liters of rum annually.

Travelers can tour the distillery through the Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience. Named after Joy Spence – Appleton's master blender and the first female master blender in the spirits industry – the 75- to 90-minute tour takes guests through the rum-making process. There is also a rum tasting included during the visit. A restaurant and gift shop are also on-site. Past guests said the tour was informative and fun.

Trench Town Culture Yard Trench Town Culture Yard

"Bob Marley did not make Trench Town, Trench Town made Bob Marley." That is the motto of the community of Trench Town, located in Kingston. The more than seven-block area is considered the birthplace of reggae music.

To deal with the rise in squatter settlements around Kingston, Trench Town was built as a public housing project in the 1940s by the British as a way to solve the problem, but that wasn't the case. The poor living conditions of the neighborhood helped birth the sounds of reggae and ska, as musicians who lived in the community (including Marley, Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh) wrote and sang about these circumstances. Music lovers will recognize the area mentioned in the songs "Trench Town Rock" and "No Woman, No Cry."

Luminous Lagoon Luminous Lagoon

The Luminous Lagoon is a one-of-a-kind natural phenomenon. Located in Falmouth (home to one of the island's cruise ports ), the lagoon once served as a dock for English ships carrying Jamaican exports such as sugar and rum.

Today, the marshlands are famous for millions of dinoflagellates: microscopic organisms that glow in its waters. The saltwater from the Caribbean Sea and the freshwater from the Martha Brae River combine in the lagoon to create an environment where the dinoflagellates thrive to produce a spectacular nighttime light show. It is one of four places in the world where this bioluminescence occurs in the water and is reported to be the largest of them all.

Caribbean Uncovered

Ecotourism in Jamaica: Sustainable Caribbean Travel in 2024

Caribbean Uncovered Privacy Policy

From its 14 majestic waterfalls to its historic cave system, Jamaica is a hub for eco-tourism in the Caribbean.

Jamaica holds the title of the largest island in the Caribbean  – this means endless options for sustainable, outdoor adventures . Along with its famous waterfalls and unique nature preserves, you’ll also find 100,000 acres of National Park land across the country.

In fact, Jamaica has multiple government-led organizations with a mission of improving the long-term sustainability of the island and its protected lands.

As an avid Caribbean traveler, I’m passionate about protecting and preserving each island’s ecosystems – that starts with us, the visitors! We are in their home and should treat it as such.

This article contains everything you need to know about ecotourism in Jamaica – lodging to activities and transportation and best practices – and how to have an exceptionally sustainable trip!

What is sustainable tourism in Jamaica?

Sustainable tourism can look different in a lot of places depending on the environment, culture, and climate . But at its core, it’s about finding ways to balance tourism with environmental conservation and local community involvement.

We’ve all seen what mass tourism can do and the awful side effects it can bring when the government doesn’t regulate activities and the locals don’t benefit from their land. Thankfully, Jamaica is aware – and they’re doing something about it.

Sustainable tourism in Jamaica has been in the works for the past few years, with the country’s government taking steps to promote responsible travel practices while also making sure Jamaicans are benefiting from so many tourists making their way to the island.

The island itself is full of natural beauty and breathtaking scenery. It’s so important to keep the jungles, forests, and beaches thriving for future generations of locals and travelers to enjoy. I’m so happy to hear you’re considering your impact as you travel to Jamaica, and so I’ve gathered the best natural attractions that are simultaneously perfect ecotourism activities.

Ecotourism Natural Attractions in Jamaica

1. river tubing from ochos rios .

People tubing down a river in Jamaica.

While some tourism boards have been building waterparks and fake rapids, Jamaica has instead chosen to invest in one of its beautiful rivers, the Rio Bueno. Where you can join a tour for river tubing down the rapids. It’s one of the most popular things to do in Jamaica.

You’ll be given an innertube with a life jacket and helmet before you start making your way down the river. Your guide will stop and point out wildlife along the way and stop for a swim at one of the many natural pools.

Eventually, you’ll cruise up to the Bengal Bay shores for a dip in the Caribbean. This is one of the most popular river attractions in Jamaica so don’t miss out 🙂

2. Swim in Jamaica’s Natural Springs

Mayfield Falls spilling over a rock wall.

Jamaica is seriously a nature lovers’ playground, as soon as you get out of the resorts, the island is full of so much nature and wildlife. The natural springs around the island are a great way to connect with the island and swim in crystal-clear waters.

My favorite is the Mayfield Falls in the west of Jamaica . This is perfect if you’re staying in Negril and want to do a half-day tour. Loads of waterfalls empty out into gorgeous natural pools that you’ll be able to swim in – the perfect way to take in all of the greenery around you.

The Blue Hole is also a really popular natural pool, but I’ll talk more about that later on!

3. Mystic Mountain Ziplining

A person ziplining through the forest in Jamaica on an ecotourism trip.

Ziplining and Jamaica go hand in hand.  You can’t visit Jamaica and not go ziplining – it’s just one of those things that you have to do. And, it’s freaking fun, so why not?!

There are a few different zipline tours in Jamaica, but I think the best is Mystic Mountain. And while at first glance, you might think, how is this eco-friendly?

Well, Mystic Mountain is all about environmental conservation. They use solar panels to power the Sky Explorer chairlift, and they hold a bunch of eco-friendly tours on the mountain. The park was able to bring a whole lot of fun to the jungle without tearing it down, making swinging from tree to tree all the more enjoyable.

4. Waterfall Hiking: Dunn River Falls, Blue Hole, and more

A waterfall flowing into Blue Hole in the jungle of Jamaica.

Waterfall hiking is one of my favorite activities in Jamaica. And, there is none better than Dunn River Falls. It’s the most popular waterfall to climb on the island, and for good reason.

The waters are absolutely stunning as they pour down the rocks, and you can climb to the top for some amazing views. But woof, the crowds can be insane.

But if you want to escape the crowds and didn’t book a joint tour, check out the Blue Hole. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still popular, but you won’t be waiting in line to climb any rocks.

The Blue Hole mineral spring is a gorgeous natural pool with a waterfall and rope swings to Tarzan your way into the water. I wouldn’t call this one of the best hidden treasures in Jamaica , but it is a good escape.

5. Blue Mountain Peak Hike – Highest Point in Jamaica (7,402 ft)

Jamaica's Blue Mountain, covered in bright green trees and woods on a sunny day.

If you’re an avid hiker or just like to get out in nature, you’ll absolutely love the Blue Mountains in Jamaica. It’s a stark difference to the white sandy beaches and brings a little bit of a challenge to your vacation. But let me tell you, the views are worth it.

The Blue Mountain Peak hike is about 7 miles round trip and can take anywhere from three to five hours , depending on your pace. There are a few different trails if you are looking for something easier where you’ll still get some epic views.

You can support the local Jamaicans by stopping at one of the local shops on the way to pick up some water and snacks.

This can be a challenging hike so be sure to have plenty of water and sunscreen for your trip.

A woman cooking using traditional Jamaican methods in cast iron pots and pans.

6. Experience a Retreat with Go Natural Jamaica

Immerse yourself in the way of local life by joining one of the retreats at Go Natural Jamaica. What started out as a yoga retreat center has turned into an amazing opportunity to get involved with the sustainability project and make your time at the retreat what you wish.

You can still enjoy your yoga classes, but you can also get out and explore Jamaica’s nature and wildlife at places like Treasure Beach and Frenchmans Cove. You can also visit their permaculture farm, where all your meals will be farm-to-table.

Go Natural is set on making all of its operations sustainable so you can feel good about your stay and know that you are supporting a local business with ethical practices.

7. Kayak through the Blue Lagoon in Port Antonio

Over the past few years, my Instagram feed has become flooded with gorgeous pictures of travelers on bamboo rafts through the iconic Blue Lagoon in Port Antonio.

So naturally, I had to give it a try! I had the best time, and it also felt really good to be able to hire one of the local guides and learn from them as they guided me through the lagoon.

You can also rent out a kayak and paddle around yourself, but for the ultimate experience, I highly recommend grabbing a bamboo raft. I had no idea they could float that well or maneuver around the mangroves on the side.

8. Go Camping in Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park

Most people only think of resorts on the beach when they think of where to stay in Jamaica, but I promise a night or two in the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park will show you a completely different side of the island.

Not only is this park home to some of the most breathtaking views on the island, but it’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a designated Important Bird Area. Plus, camping in the mountains surrounded by lush greenery and fresh air is an experience like no other. It’s also a nice break from the hot and humid weather down on the coast.

9. Snorkeling in Montego Bay Marine Park

People relaxing on the sandy beach near the Montego Bay Marine Park.

Montego Bay is a popular tourist destination in Jamaica, and unfortunately, the marine life has suffered from over-tourism in the past. However, efforts have been made to protect and preserve the marine ecosystem through the establishment of Montego Bay Marine Park.

The Montego Bay Marine Park is an area spanning nearly 16 square kilometers. With over 20 kilometers of shoreline, including coral reefs, mangrove ecosystems, and seagrass beds, which means it’s also an ideal snorkeling spot.

By choosing to snorkel in this designated protected area, you not only get to experience the vibrant underwater world but also contribute to its preservation and conservation.

Don’t forget to wear your reef-safe sunscreen anytime you’re swimming in the Caribbean .

A sign that reads 'Jamaica' in the country's flag colors with a beach in the background.

Sustainable Accommodations in Jamaica

When choosing where to stay in Jamaica, picking an eco-friendly accommodation doesn’t mean giving up your comfort or luxury. I’ve picked out four different accommodations that you’re going to love that have all implemented sustainable practices.

Mel’s Botanical Retreat Jamaica West Indies

Mel’s is the perfect place to stay if you love supportive boss babes in your life. The retreat is Jamaican woman-owned and operated. The community takes pride in small farming, as they have a coffee and banana farm on site. You’ll enjoy Organic meals, eco-friendly tours, and beach hikes, to name a few.

Rockhouse Hotel

If boujee is in your vocabulary, the RocHouse Hotel in Negril is taking it up a notch by offering five-star luxury while staying committed to sustainability. The property is out of this world gorgeous, located right on the shores of Negrils West End. I’m talking about walking out of your room and diving into crystal-clear waters. They have been Green Globe certified for over 20 years and continue to put Jamaica on the map for sustainable travel.

Geejam Hotel Jamaica

If the coast isn’t your thing, but you still want all the glamour of it. Stay in the foothills of the Blue Mountains at Geejam. This hotel is surrounded by lush vegetation and is so green that around every corner, you’ll be amazed. Instead of clearing out the land for a major hotel, Geejam has worked within the mountains and built alongside it to inspire travelers to connect with the land.

Camp Cabarita Eco Resort

Camp Cabarita is perfect for eco-travelers on a budget, and it’s honestly one of my favorite places to stay on the island. Everything has been built to bring you back to nature and to show you the Jamaican roots. Every tour they offer is eco-friendly, and when you’re not out and about, you can enjoy the solace of the jungle around you. Head to the river or hang out in a hammock and read a book while you breathe the fresh air.

Jamaica’s Eco-Tourism Efforts

There are some serious benefits of ecotourism in Jamaica! Here are a few ways Jamaica is working to converse and provide for its land and locals.

Initiatives and Agencies

In 2017, the minister of tourism announced the “Five Pillars of Tourism Growth,” which includes an emphasis on sustainable tourism . The Jamaica Tourist Board also partners with various other organizations like the JCDT , JPAT, and JET.

The Jamaica Protected Areas Trust Limited (JPAT) is a government agency that works to protect and manage Jamaica’s natural resources. They work closely with local communities to promote sustainable livelihoods and eco-tourism in protected areas such as the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park.

On the other side of the government coin is The Jamaica Environment Trust ( JET ), which is a nonprofit nongovernment organization that works to educate the public on environmental issues and advocate for sustainable practices.

Land and Water Conservation

Jamaica has the 5th largest concentration of endemic species in the Caribbean and has developed a national biodiversity conservation strategy with North America to reach the goal of protecting at least 30% of its land area by 2030.

Since 1995, Jamaica has joined the CBD, which is all about protecting the land and nature, using its resources wisely to conserve water, and sharing the good things that come from using genetic materials.

Cultural Heritage Protection

Jamaica’s commitment to sustainable tourism goes beyond just protecting the environment, as they also prioritize preserving their cultural heritage . If you’ve ever been to Jamaica, you’ll know how beautiful and important their culture is.

The Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT) is responsible for safeguarding and promoting the island’s rich cultural legacy through conservation and education programs.

Jamaica’s tourist arrivals continue to grow despite headwinds – Seiveright

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Senior Advisor and Strategist in the Ministry of Tourism, Delano Seiveright says official tourist arrival numbers as at the first week of May are ahead of the same period in 2023, which was a major growth year for the sector.

Seiveright noted that Jamaica recorded just over 1.7 million tourist arrivals up to the first week of May with just more than one million stopover arrivals and more than 700,000 cruise passengers.

“This represents a remarkable 4.6 per cent increase for stopover arrivals and a whopping 23 per cent increase for cruise passengers,” said Seiveright.

“The still strong numbers also reinforce the continued success of efforts and strategies piloted by Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett and his team since the devastating impact of the COVID -19 pandemic,” added Seiveright.

He pointed out that despite the decelerating effect of headwinds created by growing global economic uncertainties, relatively high inflation and interest rates in primary markets, and the negative effects of recent travel advisories, the Ministry of Tourism and its agencies continue to effect multipronged initiatives and actions to bolster growth.

Seiveright also noted that the world’s largest online travel agency, Expedia, recently cut 1,500 employees or nine per cent of its global staff due in part to slowing travel demand.

As it relates to most recent Level 3 US Travel advisory, Seiveright noted that Government at the very highest levels, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Kamina Johnson-Smith, Jamaica’s Ambassador to the United States, Audrey Marks and several other Government officials, private sector leaders and influential US citizens  have and continue to treat this very seriously.

“There have been multiple engagements with high ranking US officials across the State Department, Congress and so on. Several other countries impacted by similar negative travel advisories have raised concerns too.

“The Jamaica Tourist Board also continues to work around the clock with its global team including its public relations and advertising teams and international partners like airlines, tour operators, travel agents, hotels and other critical stakeholders to drive Jamaica’s tourism growth efforts despite the odds,” said Seiveright.

In Jamaica, the Travel Boom Continues

A tourism renaissance that began largely in the summer of 2021 in Jamaica is showing no signs of abating. That’s what the latest numbers show about the high-profile Caribbean destination.

So faro this year, Jamaica has welcomed 1.7 million visitors, including 1.016 million stopover arrivals and more than 700,000 cruise passengers.

For stopover arrivals, that represents a 4.6 percent increase in stopover visits; it also means a 23 percent jump in cruise arrivals compared to the first four months of 2023.

“We are grateful to see continued growth in our arrivals and earnings, which speaks to the confidence our tourism partners and visitors have in the destination,” said Jamaica Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett. “To hit the 1.7 million arrivals mark is an outstanding feat.”

Jamaica “remains a premier destination that is highly sought after for its authentic experiences,” said Jamaica Tourism Director Donovan White.

“Whether it’s our food, music or entertainment, there is a vibe that only comes alive in Jamaica,” he said.

The bigger goal is to reach 5 million visitors, a milestone that is not farfetched, Bartlett said.

“We are in a good position to make it happen,” he said.

Tourism has become a source of income and a point of pride for the people of Jalapão in Tocantins, Brazil

The World Bank

"Golden grass lifted us from extreme poverty," says Railane Ribeiro da Silva

Mariana Ceratti/World Bank

A tiny community in central Brazil has made a name for itself in tourism and design, all thanks to a native plant known as golden grass, which is used to craft accessories and decorative items. This natural resource now stands for both the earnings and the pride of Mumbuca's quilombola community in Tocantins, particularly for the Village's Association of Artisans and Extractors, who greet global visitors with music and tales.

"My golden grass, my golden grass that sprouted in the field unplanted

It was my beloved who said to me that the field's flower is my golden grass

It was Grandma Miúda who showed us how to weave

Golden grass with great affection

It was in Mumbuca that this craft began with much love”

"When you buy golden grass, you're not just purchasing a product; you're preserving a tradition that's over two centuries old and still standing strong," explains 28-year-old artisan Railane Ribeiro da Silva. "Golden grass lifted us from extreme poverty, which used to make us fearful of outsiders. If tourists came by, the locals would scatter," she adds.

Railane is the granddaughter of Grandma Miúda (Guilhermina Ribeiro da Silva, 1928-2010), who learned the art of braiding golden grass from her mother, an indigenous descendant, and passed on the skill to other women. Grandma Miúda played a crucial role in popularizing this craft nationwide and bringing progress to the region.

The World Bank joined this narrative by funding the golden grass supply chain through the Integrated and Sustainable Regional Development Project of Tocantins (PDRIS), carried out over nine years in partnership with the state government. This initiative poured $282 million into seven sectors: transportation, education, agriculture, the environment, tourism, water resources, and public management enhancement.

In tourism alone, $3 million was allocated for various projects. In Mumbuca, the project helped establish a modest museum, the Memorial House of Culture, where visitors can delve into Grandma Miúda's history, view golden grass cultivation and harvesting photos, and admire crafted items. "We managed to get cabinets, a printer, GPS, a fully equipped office," Railane rejoices.

The project also enabled sustainable harvesting training, attracting a new wave of artisans. "The training sessions made it easier to develop products from golden grass," remembers Fatima Amazonas, who co-managed the project for five years. "The women needed a proper place to sell their goods, as the previous setup was quite makeshift. They gained empowerment through sheer determination and joy," she continues.

The World Bank

Meanwhile, in Prata Community in São Félix do Tocantins, the project funded a plaza that's now a central hub for locals. Just four decades ago, this quilombola community was cut off from the world.

"We had no transportation back then. Our lives were very basic," teacher Osirene Francisca de Souza reminisces. "Electricity didn't arrive until the 2000s," she adds.

Now, with solar panels and internet access, the plaza symbolizes progress for Osirene. "It's even become a venue for school events," she notes. On weekends, the plaza is a lively spot where adults can unwind at food stalls while kids play in the playground.

Other project-supported initiatives include:

• The establishment of the Tocantins Tourism Observatory in partnership with local educational and commerce institutes for sector research and planning

• The creation of an adventure park in Cantão State Park with zip lines and acrobatic paths

• The formulation of a strategic plan to enhance sport fishing in several municipalities

• The commissioning of a bird-watching guide for Tocantins and training for bird guides

• The installation of tourist signs in the Serras Gerais region.

The tourism boom necessitated visitor-friendly infrastructure. At Tri Agro Farm, the gateway to Cachoeira da Velha, new restrooms and a rest area kiosk were constructed. Similarly, a shelter kiosk was built at the entrance to Jalapão State Park, famed for its dunes.

These enhancements have improved the visitor experience, as noted by 26-year-old advertiser Beatriz Fróes and 25-year-old food engineer Maria Julia Rossi from São Paulo. "The beauty, the cuisine, our guide, and the reasonable prices made our visit delightful," they commend. "Some services and signs could be better, but that's to be expected in an emerging tourist destination."

The charm and untouched nature of Jalapão also captivated Kàllyta Queiroz, 28, and Josias Rodrigues, 38, from Redenção in Pará. After a 500 km drive, they found the journey worthwhile. "We plan to bring our daughters when they're older," says Kàllyta, a mother of three. Traveling with young children is not advisable due to the lengthy dirt road drives.

For adults and youth alike, however, a trip to Jalapão promises an unforgettable blend of natural beauty, culture, and hospitality in a Brazilian region ripe for exploration.
