There are many things to do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife , which is the city where we stayed while we explored northern Tenerife . In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, you’ll find just about everything: historical monuments, beautiful beaches, and various recreational activities.

Also, Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the island’s capital city, so don’t worry if you’ll be here without a car. Some of the best excursions in Tenerife depart from here, so you can see the entire island without having to drive.

As soon as we arrived, we did this free tour , which I recommend if you want to get to know the city quickly before touring it on your own. Once you’re ready to explore, here is a list of the 15 top attractions in Santa Cruz de Tenerife .

1. Adán Martín Tenerife Auditorium, a popular attraction in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Also known as the Tenerife Auditorium , this is one of the top places to visit in Santa Cruz de Tenerife . The modern building is one of the most iconic structures in Tenerife and all the Canary Islands.

Its avant-garde architecture makes it one of my favorite attractions in Santa Cruz de Tenerife . Designed by the well-known (and controversial) architect Santiago Calatrava, the auditorium’s suggestive structure is instantly recognizable and one of the main points of interest in Santa Cruz de Tenerife .

The auditorium serves as the headquarters for the prestigious Tenerife Symphony Orchestra and hosts events such as Tenerife Dance, Atlantic Jazz, World Music, and Great Interpreters. You can check out the program listings here to see if something interesting coincides with your visit.

2. Palmetum, another place to visit in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Visiting the Palmetum is among the best things to do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife . It has the most pristine palm tree collection in Europe, and maybe even the world. It’s hard to believe that this 30-acre botanical garden was once a garbage dump, especially since this unique place is one of the top attractions in Santa Cruz de Tenerife .

Here, you’ll find over 200 tropical and subtropical plant species. Also, if you like ornithology, you should know that the park serves as a habitat for the blackbird, blue tit, hoopoe, and other aviary species. Plus, admission is super cheap if you book it online!

3. Castle of San Cristóbal, one of the places of interest in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

The Castle of San Cristóbal Interpretation Center is a historical attraction in Santa Cruz de Tenerife that you should see. Here, you can explore the remains of the castle wall and learn more about the defensive structures and systems on the island. Best of all, admission is free!

Once inside, you’ll see the legendary bronze cannon, El Tigre. This 18th-century artillery piece measures nearly 10 feet long and weighs over 4,000 lbs. Legend has it that it was the one that wounded the famous English Admiral, Horacio Nelson when he tried to invade the city in 1797.

Nelson lost his arm after one of El Tigre’s musketballs hit him, which is why this cannon and castle remain an important attraction.

4. Our Lady of Africa Market, the best place to visit in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

If you like traditional marketplaces, visiting Our Lady of Africa Market is one of the best things to do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife . More popularly known as La Recova, this Neo-Colonial style market was named one of the Top 10 markets in the world by The Guardian newspaper.

The building itself is beautiful and surrounded by flowers and statues. However, what makes it one of the top attractions in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the incredible array of fruits, vegetables, and seafood.

Moreover, the market serves as a symbol of resistance since it almost closed in the 80s and 90s, when supermarkets and mass-produced junk food were brought to the island. While several merchants abandoned their stalls, many others resisted and formed a cooperative. In this way, they sustained the marketplace and increased its popularity.

In 2018, Our Lady of Africa received a gold medal from the Government of the Canary Islands, cementing its reputation as a Santa Cruz de Tenerife tourist site . If you come here during one of the tasting nights, I’m sure this marketplace will become one of your favorite places in the city.

5. Playa de Las Teresitas, one of the best beaches in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Playa de las Teresitas is one of the best beaches in Tenerife , so it should be a must-see during your trip to Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It’s in the town of San Andrés, about 4 miles from the city center.

Curiously, this is one of the few white sand beaches you’ll find in northern Tenerife. Originally, the beach was characterized by black sand, volcanic rocks, and strong waves that made swimming difficult. In the 70s, the City Council installed a large breakwater and white sand from the old Spanish Sahara.

As a result, Playa de Las Teresitas is among the best beaches in Santa Cruz de Tenerife . It’s especially popular with families, so you can’t miss it if you’re visiting with kids. Among its facilities are showers, toilets, changing rooms, accessible walkways, boat rentals, umbrellas, and hammocks.

6. Visit Anaga Rural Park, the best thing to do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

One of the best things to see near Santa Cruz de Tenerife is Anaga Rural Park . It’s just a few minutes from the city and boasts one of the most magnificent laurel forests in the Canary Islands. Its natural fairytale landscape encompasses over 37,000 acres.

If you’re not sure what to do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife , I highly recommend adding this park to your itinerary. This place fascinated us, as I shared in our guide to Anaga Rural Park . There are several hiking trails here, although the Trail of the Senses is one of the most popular hikes in Tenerife .

7. Plaza de España, another cool thing to see in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Another awesome place to visit in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is Plaza de España, the largest square in the city. It was built in 1929 at the Castle de San Cristóbal, although it was renovated years later to include a seawater lake and pavilions.

The highlight of the square is the Monument to the Fallen , a cross-shaped tower with a viewpoint on top. It was built after the Civil War and is a bit controversial today since some say it violates the Historical Memory Law of Spain.

In any case, if you visit Santa Cruz de Tenerife, you should visit this plaza, as it’s quiet, beautiful, and a great portrait of everyday life in the city.

8. Museum of Nature and Archeology, another place of interest in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Visiting the Museum of Nature and Archeology (MUNA) is one of the best things to do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife . It’s in the Old Civil Hospital of Our Lady of the Forsaken, which dates back to 1745 and exemplifies the neoclassical architecture of the island.

Nearly three centuries later, the building is now a modern museum and one of the top places in Santa Cruz de Tenerife to learn about the archaeological heritage of the Canary Islands.

If you go, you can discover Tenerife’s natural wealth and the largest collection of Guanche culture, representing the aboriginal people who inhabited the island before the first European conquerors arrived.

9. García Sanabria Park, another tourist site in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

One of the most popular things to see in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is García Sanabria Park . Built in 1926, the park was meant to provide more green space to the city.

Today, the park covers 17 acres and includes plant species from many different countries. Among its collection are tropical and subtropical plants like peacock flowers, bougainvillea, Mediterranean species like the olive tree, and, of course, Canarian palm trees.

So, if you’re not sure what to do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife , you can always take a pleasant walk through García Sanabria Park. Furthermore, the park is a declared Asset of Cultural Interest of the Canary Islands , so it’s worth visiting.

10. Castle of San Juan Bautista, a historical place to visit in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Also known as Castillo Negro, the Castle of San Juan Bautista is one of the most popular points of interest in Santa Cruz de Tenerife .

It was built in the first half of the 17th century, although the fortification facing the sea underwent renovations in the past to fix some water damage. Today, it’s the best-preserved castle on the island and considered a National Heritage Site.

Every July 25th, the Recreation Gesta takes place to commemorate the failed attempt by British Admiral Horacio Nelson to invade the city. The event is a great thing to see in Santa Cruz de Tenerife if you’re visiting during this time.

11. Àngel Guimerá Theater, one of the best tourist sites in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

The Àngel Guimerá Theater is another attraction in Santa Cruz de Tenerife with a lot of history. Inaugurated in January 1851 under the reign of Elizabeth II, the theater is an Asset of Cultural Interest in the Canary Islands.

Its name pays tribute to the writer, poet, and playwright Àngel Guimerá Jorge, who is also commemorated in a bronze statue out front. If you like theater, this is one of the best things to see in Santa Cruz de Tenerife . Esteemed actors such as Margarita Xirgú and María Guerrero, among others, have graced its stage.

The theater has also hosted ballets, orchestras, musical companies, and lyrical Spanish dramas called zarzuelas . Furthermore, it has been a centerpiece for the famous Santa Cruz Carnival, a declared Festival of International Tourist Interest .

12. Church of La Concepción, another Santa Cruz de Tenerife point of interest

In 1500, Father Juan Guerra founded a church and dedicated it to Santa Cruz. It was named Church of Our Lady of the Conception in 1638 and remains one of the most impressive churches to visit in the city.

The church was rebuilt after a fire destroyed it in 1652, and its current tower was constructed in 1786. Even so, the church is one of the most beautiful attractions in Santa Cruz de Tenerife , thanks to its artistic heritage.

13. Visit César Manrique Maritime Park, a fun thing to do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

César Manrique Maritime Park is a 236,000ft² recreation area and one of the best places to visit in Santa Cruz de Tenerife with kids. The park has three seawater pools, a jacuzzi, a gym, restaurants, sports facilities, children’s areas, and a small beach.

The park is a posthumous work by the famous Lanzarote artist César Manrique and was inaugurated in 1995. It includes the architect’s signature designs that incorporate natural elements like volcanic rocks, palm trees, and ornamental plants. There are even several of Manrique’s famous wind mobiles in the park

Without a doubt, this is one of the coolest attractions in Santa Cruz de Tenerife . It’s open year-round, although I recommend avoiding weekends and holidays because it gets very crowded.

14. El Chicharro, another famous attraction in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

El Chicharro is a bronze sculpture that’s become a local symbol of Tenerife. Going to see this work of art is one of the best things to do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife .

The sculpture is in the Plaza del Chicharro and is a 1,320-lb replica of the original, which was created by students at the Caracas School of Industrialists.

Unfortunately, the original piece was vandalized, so a replica was created. That said, the new sculpture is just as gorgeous, so be sure to check out this famous bronze horse mackerel!

15. Parish of San Francisco de Asís, another point of interest in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Another lovely church to visit in this city is the Parish of San Francisco de Asís . It’s in the Plaza del Príncipe and was originally in the church of the Franciscan Convent of San Pedro de Alcántara.

The ecclesiastical confiscations closed most of the convents, including this church, in 1823. It reopened 25 years later and, today, it’s a grand historical and artistic monument. As you visit this place in Santa Cruz de Tenerife , you’ll see the influence of the island’s 17th and 18th-century baroque style.

Where to stay in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

We spent one night at the Iberostar Heritage Grand Mence , which was an amazing hotel. It’s not the cheapest hotel in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, but we were celebrating our anniversary and wanted something special. The colonial-style hotel has a spa and a restaurant serving breakfast and dinner.

For the rest of our trip, we stayed at the Silken Atlántida Santa Cruz . While it was cheaper, it was almost as elegant as the Iberostar. I loved this hotel’s rooftop terrace because it offered incredible ocean views. Also, our room had a hydromassage shower, and the gastro-bar served local wines and tapas.

If you’re on a budget, the Príncipe Paz Hotel is one of the best hotels in Santa Cruz de Tenerife . It’s right in the historic center, so you’ll be able to easily walk to most of Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s points of interest . The hotel also has a restaurant with magnificent views of the plaza and a varied menu of tapas, sandwiches, and salads.

The best restaurants in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

This city has great food, and one of the best places to eat is Etéreo by Pedro Nel . This is considered one of the best restaurants in Tenerife and serves original, high-quality dishes.

Another good option is El Porrón Tasca Andaluza , which offers good food, nice service, and a lovely atmosphere. Likewise, D’Tapas, 26 is a great choice and, while it looks unassuming on the outside, its menu is out of this world. Finally, if you want to enjoy an impressive dinner with friends, check out Guannabí ‘s excellent food and ambiance.

How to get to Santa Cruz de Tenerife

If you’re flying into the Tenerife North Airport, you have a few ways to get to the capital city.

By public transportation:

• Bus 20 towards the Santa Cruz Interchange will take you to the city center in less than 30 minutes.

By car rentals in Tenerife North Airport :

• Take TF-5 towards Avenida Reyes Católicos in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

You may also prefer to book a transfer from the airport to your accommodation. Cars for 4 people and mini-buses for 10-15 people are available.

Located in the northeast of the island , getting to Santa Cruz is simplicity itself. The island’s main motorway runs from the rear of the southern resorts, past the island’s biggest airport (Reina Sofía) and through into Santa Cruz.

On the motorway, you will notice the landscape changing from the barren, dry and desert-like terrain of the south to the lush, greener scenery of pine, palms and tropical foliage as you head further north.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is an affluent port city and home to around half the island’s population .

1. Stroll the old town area of Santa Cruz de Tenerife

If you’ve parked the car or left the bus opposite the port area, stroll across the colourfully planted Plaza de España (opposite the port), and you are at the beginning of the old town. Plaza de Candelaria, Plaza de Weyler and Calle La Noria Street make up the boundaries of this atmospheric old town quarter.

Not as obvious as some old town districts in other European cities, old Santa Cruz is full of historical buildings , narrow flagstone streets and plazas that entice you to linger a little and soak up the atmosphere.

You will find shops and boutiques offering everything from the latest fashion to homeware and must-have electronic gadgets. And café-bars and restaurants serving the best of Spanish and Canarian cuisine. 

Best of all, most of the best things to do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife are just a pleasant stroll from the old town district.

2. Learn the history of the Guanches at the Museum of Nature and Archaeology

Located at C. Fuente Morales, s/n, 38003 Santa Cruz, the neoclassical building housing this interesting collection was once a hospital. 

The collection, one of the best to see in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, comprises fossils, preserved plants, algae, insects and various land and marine vertebrates.

 It combines with the Natural Sciences of Tenerife Museum and the Museum of Nature and Man – a history of the original Aboriginal population, and houses several Guanche mummies.

3. Explore the Plaza de España

You walked across this square heading to the old town area, but it is best visited towards the end of your day , when you could do with resting those weary legs.

It is the main plaza in the city. Constructed in 1929 and recently refurbished by the renowned Swiss architects of Herzog & de Meuron. 

The square has a large artificial lake with fountains, and is bordered by the Palacio del Cabildo de Tenerife , the Palacio de la Carta and the Plaza de la Candelaria. 

There are several sculptures around the park, seating, and a street food stall where you can feed the hunger pangs.

If you enjoy romantic strolls when the sun sets, after your evening meal head back to the Plaza de España. As dusk falls, hundreds of lights, many of them shaped like water drops, illuminate the square and the whole provides a picturesque, intimate area where you can sit and gaze across the water to the port.

4. How many varieties can you find at the Santa Cruz Palmetum

Located on a one-time rubbish tip at Avenida Marítima, 5 38003 Santa Cruz, the beautiful Santa Cruz Palmetum is a large park dedicated to the palm tree . 

The garden has over 2,000 species of tropical and sub-tropical palms and their related families, all grouped in their geographical areas. Walking through the park, you could be passing palm species from Australia, Africa, the Caribbean or Madagascar.

Work began on the conversion in 1995, and it wasn’t until 2014 that it was finally opened to the public. 

In the years since it opened, it has attracted increasing numbers of birds , and is a favourite destination with local bird watchers searching for new species to see in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. 

The top of the park also provides excellent views across the city and out to sea.

5. Soak up the atmosphere at the Cooperativa Mercado Nuestra Señora De África

Translated to Our Lady of Africa Market Cooperative, it is located at Av. de San Sebastián, 51, 38003 Santa Cruz. You may be wondering why anyone looking for things to do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife would want to visit a food market , but it’s the atmosphere.

As you walk through the old colonial arch into the market area, you can feel the pulse rising and adrenal starting to flow. 

Much like typical markets and bazaars in many African countries, the market is a bustling, throbbing mass of stallholders shouting out their wares and hundreds of residents and hoteliers bartering over the cost of the fruit, veg, meat, fish and other goods. 

With food stalls dotted around the market, you can stop and sample some of the many local delicacies. 

On Sunday, it becomes a well-known local antiques market. The market is closed on Mondays and open from 9.00am to 14.30pm the rest of the week.

6. Marvel at the modern architecture of the Auditorio de Tenerife Adán Martín

On your journey into the capital, you probably noticed this modern building sitting on the cliff top on the Avenue of the Constitution between Marine Park and the port.

Designed by Santiago Calatrava, it is an 1800-seat auditorium with a 400-seat chamber music hall. Construction of this futuristic building began in 1997 and was completed and opened in September 2003.

Considered one of the finest contemporary structures in the Canaries and mainland Spain, it has featured on Spanish postal stamps and a limited edition release of commemorative 5-euro coins.

It is also one of the top attractions with visitors looking for things to do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Besides numerous conferences, the auditorium runs various cultural activities throughout the year, is one of the venues for the Canary Islands Music Festival, held annually, and is home to the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra.

7. Relax in García Sanabria Park

Located at Calle Méndez Núñez, 38004 Santa Cruz, García Sanabria is the largest urban park in the Canaries. Created in 1926, it is over 67-thousand square metres of pristinely manicured lawns, borders, flower beds, water features, statues and colourful archways.

The name comes from the mayor of the time, who approved and overlooked its construction. It is a park listed as a site of cultural interest by the Tenerife Cabildo (council).

More than just a park, it is the venue of many cultural presentations, exhibitions and food fairs. And one of the favourite meeting points for local singles, couples, friends and families during their free time. The park is open all day, every day.

8. Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción. The city’s foremost church

The original Catholic Church of our Lady of the Conception was built in 1498 , shortly after Spanish Conquistadors conquered the island. The building you see today, on the same site, was constructed during the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

Inside the church is a silver altar , a portrait of Don Matías Carta, a wealthy benefactor of the church and painted after his death, and the Holy Cross of the Conquest circa 1494 , from where the Santa Cruz name came from. The church organ was sourced in London and fitted in the church in 1862.

It is the only church in the Canaries that has five naves. Although considered the main church to see in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, i t is not a cathedral. That honour goes to the Cathedral of La Laguna.

9. The Historical Military Museum of the Canary Islands

For anyone interested in museums, especially military museums, this one should fly to the top of your things to see and do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife list.

The museum is located in a rough triangle between Rambla General Franco and Avenida Francisco La Roche, with the entrance found on Calle San Isidro.

A coastal military fort from 1854 it was known at the time as Almeyda Fort. For many years including through the Spanish Civil War, it was the main barracks of the Tenerife Artillery Regiment before becoming a museum in 1940.

Outside exhibits include American tanks, field artillery pieces, helicopters and other military vehicles. Different rooms within the museum house collections of small arms, rifles, lances, swords, cutlasses and much more. 

Another room is given over to the Battle of Santa Cruz against the British, with a couple of authentic flags captured from the Brits and the cannon said to have fired the fateful shot that took Nelson’s arm.

If models and modelling are your interest, one room holds a scale model of the city and port as it was in 1797, with the British fleet positions around the port and the positions of those defending it.

It also contains a flag room . A room with models of all the forts built to defend the city. And a space dedicated to the indigenous Guanches.

10. Demolished, buried and found again – the Castillo de San Cristobal

Two years in the building, in 1577, t he castle of San Cristobal stood proud at the entrance to Santa Cruz harbour, guarding the port and city against all comers right up to 1928.

Its partial demolition in that year was to allow the construction of the Plaza de España, and the remains of the castle were buried under soil , sand, gravel and flagstones. 

Some 70 years later, in 2006, major works to refurbish the square were in progress when parts of the castle were (re)discovered. The plaza refurb was halted while further exploration was carried out underground, with the outcome of sections of the old castle’s walls being uncovered.

Today there is an entrance to a tunnel on the seaward side of Plaza de España , where you can walk underground to a small military museum in the castle’s walls and view some of the recovered artefacts.

11. Parroquia de San Francisco de Asís – Church of St. Francis of Assisi

Located at Plaza San Francisco, 13, 38002 Santa Cruz, the Parroquia de San Francisco is the second most important Catholic church in Santa Cruz.

Originally built as a Franciscan convent , the current building was built in 1680, in the Canary Island’s popular Baroque style, with the interior housing three knaves and various artefacts from the 17th and 18th centuries.

The church came to prominence during a Cholera episode in 1893, when a small image representing Jesus Christ was carried at the head of a procession through the city streets. Miraculously, shortly after the procession, the outbreak stopped.

Since then, the image became known as Señor de Santa Cruz, protector of the city, and the church is a highly regarded place of worship by the faithful.

12. Re-enact the Battle of Santa Cruz at the Castle of St John the Baptist

For those who prefer castles over churches, the Castle of St John the Baptist sits on the clifftop near the César Manrique Maritime Park and just behind the Auditorium .

Known as the Black Castle due to the colour of its stone, it was one of the principal forts for the defence of the port and city of Santa Cruz. The castle was built between 1641 and 1644 , but was severely damaged through the decades and rebuilt in 1765, with a circular turret added to improve defence capabilities.

It remained a defensive fort until 1924, when the garrison moved out. Empty for 24 years, it was opened as a military museum in 1948 and is a popular attraction with visitors looking for things to see in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Every year in the castle grounds, on the 25th of July, the Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is re-enacted. On this date in 1797, the British fleet, under the command of Admiral Lord Nelson, tried unsuccessfully to invade Santa Cruz, and the enactment is carried out using full historical costumes and equipment.

13. Tenerife Espacio de las Artes – The Museum of Modern Art

Known as Tenerife Arts Space, or TEA, and dedicated to the arts and local culture , it is located on the Avenida San Sebastian. It is located in a large building of over 20,000 square metres..

The permanent collection is primarily from the Canarian surrealist painter Óscar Domínguez. With other acquisitions from the Tenerife Cabildo and public and private collectors.

Since its inauguration, TEA has also held temporary exhibitions from numerous modern artists, i ncluding Roland Penrose, Juan Hidalgo, Juan Hidalgo, Angèle Etoundi Essamba, Thomas Ruff, Pablo Picasso, Fernando Álamo, Clemente Bernad and many more too numerous to mention here.

It also has an exhibition of work by Canarian artists through the 20th century, and works post-1975 by local artists that have made an impression on the international art world.

The Photographic Centre includes works from international photographers, although much focuses on the landscape and topography of Tenerife and the Canary Isles. An extensive library is open to all, and the complex has a large square where you will find seating and a pleasant café/bar.

14. Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes – National Museum of Fine Arts

Constructed in 1929 by architect Eladio Laredo, the building was first used to store historical artefacts in 1840. In the 1930s, it was converted to hold art exhibitions, and became The National Museum of Fine Arts.

Located at C. José Murphy, 12, 38002 Santa Cruz, the museum has fourteen rooms dedicated to exhibiting fine art from the 16th to the 20th century.

The exterior is decorated with ten busts of prominent Tenerifian writers, poets, musicians, composers, playwrights, historians, engineers and painters.

Today, the museum exhibits works by leading European artists of their time and numerous pieces by well-known Canarian artists. The museum also holds book signings, lectures and recitals. 

Opening times are Tuesday through Friday, 10.00 to 20.00 and Saturday and Sunday, 10.00 to 15.00.

15. Let the kids get wet at Parque Marítimo César Manrique

Not every visitor looking for things to see and do in Tenerife wants to pass their time in museums and churches. Many just want to soak up the atmosphere, stroll the city streets, do a little shopping, stop at a pavement café – and find things to keep the kids happy.

Parque Marítimo, designed by lauded Canarian architect César Manrique before his untimely death, was opened in 1995. This magnificent saltwater park covers over 60,000 square metres. 

Close to the auditorium, well sign-posted and with a large car park, it will allow the whole family to cool off and give the kids a welcome break.

Decorated with palm trees and local flora, you won’t find any flumes or water slides here. Just plenty of space to lay your towels, three swimming pools , terraces, solariums, restaurants and changing rooms.

Open seven days a week, the park is highly popular with residents and can get very busy on weekends and bank holidays.

16. Break out the plastic at some of the best shopping areas in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Forget the souvenir shops and cut-price look-alike electronic stores of the south. Here is where the residents do their serious shopping.

Whether it’s just a little window shopping or some serious bend-the-plastic shopping, Santa Cruz has some excellent stores and malls, where you can get an idea of what the locals are queueing up for.

El Corte Ingles – Spain’s equivalent to the UK’s John Lewis or Debenhams.

With stores across the mainland and the islands, El Corte Ingles is one of Spain’s most prominent department chains.

Stepping off the bus at the main terminal, you can see the store as you look up the hill. El Corte Ingles sells everything from foodstuffs to DIY items, homeware to cosmetics and electronics to clothing.

A few of the major brands available in El Corte Ingles include Armani, Adolfo Domínguez, Calvin Klein, Diesel, DKYN, Hugo Boss, Karen Millen, Fred Perry, Lacoste, Reebok, Guess and many others. The chain also offers discounted items, which you can benefit from by producing your passport.

Tres de Mayo Shopping Mall – Next door to Corte Ingles, Tres de Mayo is numerous retail outlets under one roof, including Puruficación García and Adolfo Domínguez, both high-rollers in luxury goods such as clothing, shoes, bags and accessories.

If you’re interested in the latest high-quality electronics, there is also a Media Market on site.

Calle Castillo – for those who prefer to walk and browse. Calle Castillo is a popular street with a good mix of normal Spanish high-street brands and a selection of international designer stores . 

You will also find plenty of cafes and bars where you can stop, grab a bite, and take in the scenery.

17. Spend some time at picture-perfect Playa de Las Teresitas

If you thought pristinely clean beaches of fine golden sand and swaying palm trees were only in the realm of the island’s south, think again.

Just outside the city boundary lies the small village of San Andrés and the picturesque Las Teresitas Beach. Considered by many beach-loving locals to be the prettiest beach anywhere on the island, Las Teresitas stretches for a mile along the coast.

With palm trees growing on the sand, shops, bars and restaurants running along the rear of the beach and in the village, you can spend a whole day just relaxing and recharging the batteries.

You will find plenty of space through the weekdays , but beware, at weekends and bank holidays, the place gets very busy with locals arriving from all over the island.

18. Rambla de Santa Cruz – Santa Cruz Avenue

Probably one of the most serenely attractive city walks you will find to do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Rambla de Santa Cruz, formally Rambla de Tenerife, is nearly two kilometres of wide avenue stretching from the Plaza de la Paz to the Avenida de Anaga.

Constructed in 1661, it remains to this day one of the major streets in the city. Grand 18th and 19th-century townhouses, mansions and villas stand alongside big chain stores, independent shops, bars, hotels and restaurants.

You will find numerous statues along the way , gloriously colourful raised borders and tall trees. There are benches to rest awhile, kiosks selling magazines and prepacked snacks, and street food vendors for those wanting a little more.

19. Plaza el Príncipe de Asturias – a beautiful city centre park

Right in the heart of the city, at Villalba Hervás, 19, 27, 38002 Santa Cruz, this pretty park was constructed on the grounds of an old Franciscan Convent during the late 1800s.

Designed by architects Manuel de Oraá and Arcocha, in honour of Alfonso XII, it has two statues at the entrance depicting Spring and Summer, and a third statue by sculptor Hanneke Beaumont in the park called Courage.

The cooling sound of water can be heard from the nearby fountain, and there is a pleasant rotunda built in 1929 and surrounded by birch figs, where you can relax and discuss the day’s events.

20. Carnival time in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Surpassed only by the Rio de Janeiro carnival in Brazil, Carnival Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a spectacular costume, dancing, and musical extravaganza, that normally begins in the last week of January, and rocks through until the end of the first week in March.

If there is only one day that you can get up to Santa Cruz, make it the day of the opening parade and street carnival . Get the first bus from the south to Santa Cruz (leave the car at home), and you’re ready to party.

One of the best things to do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, join the thousands of others from around the world and party. Everywhere will be closed (except for the bars and eateries). 

People will be lining the carnival route, or strolling the streets eating, drinking, taking photographs and listening to the street musicians and buskers. All will be having a great time.

The Best Time to Visit

Santa Cruz, like the rest of Tenerife, has a sub-tropical climate, with hot summers and very mild winters. Usually, there is year-round sunshine. If you’d like to spend time at Las Teresitas beach, then ideally plan to visit between June and November. You can sunbathe there all year long, though.

If beaches are not so important to you, then you can visit Santa Cruz at any time. Having said that, it’s best to expect colder weather and more rainfall during the months of December, January and February . Even during these winter months, you’re still likely to experience plenty of sunshine.

February can also be a great time to visit Santa Cruz because of its famous carnival. You can find out more about this further down the page.

Things to do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

If you’ll be in Santa Cruz during February, then experiencing the famous carnival is an absolute must. On a worldwide scale, only the carnival in Rio de Janeiro is bigger. The extravaganza takes place over a fifteen day period, when the streets of the resort become an exciting spectacle of colour, sound, movement and socialising.

Explore the Historic Old Town

Santa Cruz de Tenerife old town comprises a historic, triangle-shaped tangle of streets including Plaza de Candelaria, Plaza de España, Plaza de Weyler and Calle La Noria. Iglesia La Concepción ( location ) is an attractive church with impressive architecture, while Calle del Castillo is named for the remains of San Cristóbal castle at the start of the street.

Calle del Castillo is lined with interesting shops, including a selection of clothing, camera and electrical retailers. The long street commences at Plaza de la Candelaria. Calle de la Noria, meanwhile, tends to be the haunt of the island’s carnival musicians.

Traditional Spanish bars, cafes and restaurants can also be found in the Old Town area, so it’s a great place for tourists to try tapas or seek out authentic local cuisine.

With a vast collection of palm trees, the botanical garden in Santa Cruz – or the Palmetum – is a popular local attraction. Astonishingly, the site was once a rubbish dump. Now, the palm trees here comprise the widest range in Europe, if not the entire planet.

In our humble opinion, Palmetum is the best place to visit in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. We were fascinated by the variety of palm trees and other gorgeous tropical plants from all around the world. The location on the hill provides great views over the city and the ocean. Priced at 5 euros, it’s a very good value for money.

Admire Adán Martín Auditorium

This iconic Auditorio de Tenerife in Santa Cruz is famed for the curved, tapering roof that was designed to represent a solar eclipse. The Tenerife auditorium can be found on the Avenida de la Constitución, close to the port.

Discover the Museum of Nature and Archaeology

The Museo de la Naturaleza y Arqueología (MUNA) showcases important archaeological items, many of which date back to the time before the Canary Islands belonged to Spain. The 18th century neoclassical building was once the Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados Civilian Hospital, and is located in the Old Town.

Visit San Cristóbal de la Laguna

Santa Cruz and La Laguna aren’t far apart at all and it’s easy to travel to this destination via public transport. Bus route 15 will whisk you to La Laguna in about 15 minutes, and a ticket costs EUR €1.45.

You can also reach San Cristóbal de la Laguna via tram Line 1 which links two places. Check out a tram map and timetables here . Purchase your ticket at a MTSA office, or from one of the machines located at the tram stops. A standard single ticket costs EUR €1.35, and you must validate this when boarding the tram.

Take a Hike at Anaga Rural Park

Anaga Rural Park is close to Tenerife’s capital and a favourite among hikers. This sizable part of the island is home to a vast laurel forest, so it’s easy to find a shady trail to follow. We actually have a detailed guide on this magnificent park on our website.

You can either visit the park with your rental car or pick one of the tours with a pickup option in Santa Cruz.

We highly recommend this private Anaga Rural Park tour . It’s not cheap but you get what you pay for: a small group, duration 8 hours, away from mass tourism and a very knowledgeable guide. The pick up is available from any accommodation in Northern Tenerife or you can also choose the option to be picked up from the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife if you arrive by cruise.

There is also a cheaper option , with a duration of 5 hours.

Book a Day Trip to Tour the Island

Guided tours are great for a couple of reasons. First, they come in handy if you don’t have a rental car but still want to visit places not accessible by bus. Second, booking a tour is your best option if you are staying in Santa Cruz or nearby for a short period of time but want to see more of Tenerife (a cruise can be a perfect example). Third, a knowledgeable guide will tell you more about each place you visit.

Teide Volcano and North of Tenerife VIP Tour

This small group tour includes a visit to UNESCO-listed La Laguna, the historic capital of Tenerife. You’ll also get up close to Teide volcano , the highest peak in Spain, and see Garachico and the oldest dragon tree in Icod de los Vinos .

Alternatively, you can opt for a private Teide and Teno Rural Park tour , which is more expensive but really concentrates on Teide and Teno national parks. It’s all about pure nature in this one. You can choose either a pick up option from any accommodation in Tenerife North or South or from the Santa Cruz port for cruise passengers when booking.

The Tour Around the Island

This day trip from Santa Cruz will bring you around the whole island. During the day you’ll visit La Laguna, Candelaria, where you can find a statue of the Candelaria Virgin, the hip town of El Médano , Garachico, La Orotava and even Los Gigantes . A very nice option if you want to see it all in 1 day!

Santa Cruz de Tenerife Shopping

This mall is located in the heart of Santa Cruz, close to the popular department store El Corte Inglés. It has tons of shops, plus 11 movie theatres, restaurants, leisure facilities, a ten-pin bowling alley and a large Carrefour hypermarket.

El Corte Inglés

This department store is situated at 7 Avenida Tres de Mayo number 7, just a few metres from the Auditorio and the Parque Marítimo.

Shops Around Calle de Castillo

Pedestrianised Calle de Castillo is Santa Cruz’s most vibrant shopping avenue , and is popular with both locals and tourists. You can buy almost anything somewhere along this 10-block street, including fashion, sportswear, cameras, perfumes, electricals and much more.

Grocery Shopping

As mentioned above, Mercado Nuestra Señora de Africa (Our Lady of Africa Market) in Santa Cruz is a must-visit when in Tenerife. This famous market can be found on the Avenida de San Sebastián. There are numerous shops and stalls here selling very fresh and competitively priced fruit, vegetables, meat, and bread, plus good quality local cheese and wine.

Other supermarkets in the city include Lidl near DISA Cuevas Blancas, Mercadona, Hiperdino on Avenida Tres de Mayo, and Supermercados Tu Alteza on Calle De El Pilar.

Where to Stay

We recommend staying in the historic centre of town, between Plaza de España and Plaza Weyler. This is a lively area, where there’s always lots going on.

If enjoying the sands and sea of Playa de Las Teresitas is your main focus, you could alternatively stay in the small town of San Andrés. You can reach the beach on foot from here. This peaceful spot has a scattering of pleasant restaurants and a lovely, local feel. From San Andrés you can reach Santa Cruz in just 15 minutes, either by car or via bus route 910.

Caleta de Negros beach, which is a mile away, is the closest to this three star hotel. Light meals such as sandwiches, tapas and salads are available in the on-site eatery. Hotel Principe Paz also has a bar.

BUDGET – Hotel Nautico

Two star Hotel Nautico is located near the harbour, and is ten minutes’ walk from the centre of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Rooms here come equipped with WiFi access, flatscreen TV and air conditioning.

These Santa Cruz de Tenerife apartments with private balconies provide guests with a relaxing outdoor space. There’s a range of local eateries close by, and the hotel also has a cafe bar and a restaurant.

BUDGET – Hotel Horizonte

While Hotel Nautico offers a better standard of accommodation, Hotel Horizonte boasts a more convenient location. It’s just 100 metres from Plaza del Principe and is also just five minutes’ walk from both García Sanabria Park and the harbour of Santa Cruz.

One star Hotel Horizonte has no pool or restaurant, but you can dine out locally at a range of eateries in the resort.

Getting Around

Flights to Santa Cruz de Tenerife may arrive at either of the island’s two airports. If you’ll be going directly to Santa Cruz straight from Tenerife North or Tenerife South, you can either take a taxi or travel by bus. If you plan to use buses throughout your stay, we recommend getting a ten+ card. Tickets are cheaper this way than paying the bus driver as you board.

The ten+ card costs 2 euros, and can be bought from TITSA offices, vending machines, tram stations and other authorised outlets such as souvenir shops. There are also vending machines in both airports that sell ten+ cards. A full map of the outlets can be seen here , and there is more information about buying various types of tickets in the bus guide on this site.

Once you’ve the ten+ card, it can then be topped up. The sum must be between 5 euros and 100 euros, rising in €5 increments. This will then be valid for a full 12 months, beginning with the first usage. After a year, the top-up expires.

Tenerife South Airport to Santa Cruz

To travel from Tenerife South airport to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the direct options are bus numbers 111 and 711 (the night bus). Bus 111 runs daily, and the journey takes about 50 minutes. Bus 711 runs every night and also takes about 50 minutes. Tickets for buses 111 or 711 cost about €9.35 each.

The taxi trip from Tenerife South airport to Santa Cruz takes about 40 minutes, and costs around 100€.

Tenerife North Airport to Santa Cruz

To travel from Tenerife North airport to Santa Cruz de Tenerife you can use bus route 20 . The trip takes about 25 minutes. A ticket for this costs 2.65€.

Santa Cruz to Playa de las Teresitas

There is a daily bus service operating between Santa Cruz and Las Teresitas. You want bus number 910 , and the journey takes just 20 minutes at a cost of around 1.25€. The first bus departs at 05:10 and the last returns to Santa Cruz by 23:25.

Santa Cruz to Teide

There is no direct bus going from Santa Cruz to Teide. The best way to get there is to book an organised trip . A tour that ends during the evening tour is ideal as you then experience the daytime views and the night stars.

Santa Cruz to Loro Parque

You can travel to Loro Parque from Santa Cruz by using bus number 103 . This takes about 45 minutes and costs 5.25€.

Getting Around Town

Buses are also a great way to travel within Santa Cruz. You can plan your journey by using the official Tenerife bus website Titsa on a computer (under Plan a Journey or via the map ) or on a mobile device (change the language to English and select Getting There). Choose your starting point and destination and it will show you which buses to take.

There are also two tram lines operating in Santa Cruz. You can see the map of both tram routes here .

You can use your ten+ card on trams, or buy a ticket from any of the machines at the stops or in MTSA offices. These are located at both line terminals. Then validate your ticket in the machine inside the tram carriage. Each single ticket costs €1.35.

The key difference, when using trams rather than buses, is that you need to validate your ten+ card ONLY when you board the tram. Here’s a list of the best things to do in Santa Cruz Tenerife, for a fun getaway!

So here I am again: back to   travel Tenerife ! This time, I am staying in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, north of the island.

If everything goes according to plan, we’ll start our trip to South America from the Canarian Islands.

But first, I put together this guide with the best things to do in Santa Cruz Tenerife .

So far, things are going a bit differently than planned, and so we are “forced” to stay longer in Santa Cruz than initially planned.

After spending more than a month in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the island’s capital, I want to share with you some of my favorite things to do and places to see in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

1. The Auditorio De Tenerife

The Auditorio quickly became one of Santa Cruz’ most emblematic sights.

The building, designed by Santiago de Calatrava, is famous for its curvy lines. Indeed, the roof seems to float in the air!

The building hosts the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra and has a rich cultural program throughout the year. Assisting an opera must be a truly unique experience!

I recommend walking around the Auditorio as you’ll love to spot the painted VIP portraits on the rocks.

2. Santa Cruz de Tenerife Old Town and Concepción Church

Whereas the Auditorio Adán Martín is emblematic of avant-garde architecture, the old town around Concepción church makes you feel like you are in a colonial city in South America.

Indeed, this is one of the most picturesque areas in Santa Cruz. The pastel-colored streets are inviting you for long walks and make the perfect photo backdrop.

You shouldn’t miss the oldest church in town, the Concepción Church, with its characteristic bell tower. The origins of this church go back to 1516.

Exploring the old city center of Tenerife’s capital is definitely one of the best things to do in Santa Cruz Tenerife.

3. Mercado de Africa

My favorite part is the Mercado de Africa, the local market of Tenerife.

I loved to indulge in fresh seafood accompanied by a glass of cava. Here, you’ll discover tropical fruits and an unimaginable variety of potatoes ( papas ), the quintessence of Canarian gastronomy.

It is really the perfect place to absorb the local vibe and get a feeling for the daily grind in Santa Cruz de Tenerife .

During weekends, people love to meet up in the market and have an  aperitivo  with some tapas.

4. Sanabria Park

Against my expectations, Santa Cruz de Tenerife has a large green lung!

Sanabria Park, with its “Flower Watch,” is a true gem. It is the place where couples and young families meet up for a walk.

You’ll find several water fountains and exotic plants all over the park.

I really enjoyed having my ice cream here at the small food stall and watching the daily grind. The long walks in Sanabria Park were one of the best things to do in Santa Cruz Tenerife.

5. Tapas Time in Santa Cruz

The terraces in  Calle S. Francisco  were one of my favorite places to enjoy the finest Canarian cuisine.

From here, it’s only a stone’s throw to the romantic Plaza del Príncipe , where you’ll end up having endless philosophical talks. Indeed the square is one of the prettiest in town.

Piazza del Lago has a VIP view of Plaza España and serves the best pizzas in town. 

6. Cesar Manrique Park

Cesar Manrique is the star architect of the Canary Islands. Some of his most famous designs can be found in Lanzarote, Puerto de la Cruz, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife!

Located next to the white Auditorio de Tenerife , the park comes with many water features and invites to relax.

There are beautiful palm trees and terraces to spend time next to the swimming pools. I even saw some people doing SUP-yoga in those pools!

The amusement park is definitely one of the things you should visit in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

7. Las Teresitas Beach

Unfortunately, Santa Cruz de Tenerife has no direct beaches.

Therefore, one of the island’s largest sandy beaches and one of the best beaches in Tenerife , Las Teresitas, is only a 20-minute drive away.

On Sundays, the beach bars will get you in a Caribbean-inspired mood.

They are playing loud Salsa and rumba music, and you’ll have a blast if you love to mingle with people.

8. Excursion to Anaga Park

Santa Cruz is also the best starting point to discover Tenerife’s wild north:  Anaga .

It holds some of the best beaches on the island, and some of the  top hikes in Tenerife .

Playa Punta Santiago and Benijo are the most spectacular ones, and the restaurants like Casa Africa will serve you the freshest seafood.

The reason for Tenerife’s landscape variety is only one of some astonishing random facts about this unique island.

Compared to other capitals, Santa Cruz is really easygoing, and its many parks and plazas invite you to relax.

As much as I enjoy this slow-paced urban life, I can’t wait for our big adventure to start: crossing the Atlantic Ocean.

9. Discover Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre

So, let me tell you about this awesome spot in Santa Cruz, Tenerife – the Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre . 

It’s a gem if you’re into learning about the cool stuff that makes the Canary Islands unique.

When you step into this museum, get ready for a journey through time and culture.  

What are the things to do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife ?

The exhibits! Oh, they’re absolutely fascinating! You’ll find everything from ancient fossils and volcanic rocks to artifacts that tell the stories of the island’s indigenous peoples. 

You can take your time wandering around, soaking up all the knowledge, and maybe even strike up a conversation with one of the friendly staff members. 

It’s mind-blowing to see how nature and humans have shaped each other’s destinies here.

10. Explore Castillo de San Juan Bautista

Hey, let me share with you one of the coolest spots in Santa Cruz, Tenerife – the Castillo de San Juan Bautista , one of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife hidden gems. 

It’s like something out of a fairy tale, with its towering walls and ancient architecture. As you step inside, you can practically feel the history swirling around you.

What to see in Santa Cruz? This castle isn’t just a relic of the past. Nope, it’s been given a new lease on life as the Military Museum of the Canary Islands.

From ancient weapons and armor to fascinating displays about battles and conquests, there’s so much to see and learn here. 

And the best part? It’s all presented in such a dynamic and engaging way that even if you’re not a history buff, you’ll still find yourself totally captivated.

11. Take a day trip to La Laguna

Head to La Laguna! It’s seriously one of my favorite places to explore near Santa Cruz, and I think you’re going to love it too.

As you arrive, you’ll be greeted by this charming UNESCO World Heritage town that’s just bursting with character.

What to do in Santa Cruz? The first thing you’ll notice is the architecture – it’s like stepping into a postcard from another era. 

The streets are lined with colorful buildings, cobblestone pathways, and beautiful old churches. 

But it’s not just about the looks – La Laguna has this lively atmosphere that’s just infectious. 

The streets are bustling with locals going about their day, and there’s this energy in the air that’s hard to describe. 

And let’s not forget about the food! La Laguna is known for its amazing culinary scene, so you’ll definitely want to indulge in some local delicacies while you’re here. 

From traditional Canarian dishes to international cuisine, there’s something to satisfy every craving.

13. Visit the Tenerife Espacio de las Artes (TEA)

The Tenerife Espacio de las Artes , or TEA for short is like stepping into a whole new world of art and culture, and trust me, you’re going to love every minute of it.

It is one of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife landmarks. As you walk through the doors of TEA, get ready to be blown away by the amazing contemporary art that’s on display.

What is there to do in Santa Cruz Tenerife? I’m talking about mind-bending installations, thought-provoking sculptures, and vibrant paintings that will leave you in awe. 

It’s like a feast for the senses, and you’ll find yourself totally immersed in the creativity all around you.

But TEA isn’t just about admiring art from afar – oh no, it’s so much more than that. This place is like a cultural hub where you can really dive deep into the world of contemporary art and culture. 

There are workshops, lectures, and even live performances that will give you a whole new perspective on the art world.

Everybody should have lived the madness of Santa Cruz’ Carnival . During almost one week in February, the city is out of control. Be sure that your costume is original… the Canarians take months to get theirs tailor-made.

Indeed, I was planning to  hitchhike the Atlantic by boat , and we are having a hard time finding a boat.

This gives us time enough to discover hidden jewels of Santa Cruz that not many tourists get to see but which are some of the very  best things to do in Tenerife .

Primark  and  KFC  are often the main reason why tourists from the south visit Santa Cruz.

But there’s much more than that! It’s the contrast between futuristic design and colonial architecture that gives the city a unique touch.

I highly recommend renting a car. Whereas public transportation is more or less reliable in the southern part of the island. It can take a long time to get from South Tenerife to Northern Tenerife.

Northern Tenerife is a gem itself and particularly if you want to do  trips to Mount Teide , a rental car is the best way to go.

Where to stay in Tenerife

The question should rather be, where not to stay in Tenerife? Every part of the island has its very own particular charm.

During our visit to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, we stayed in several AirBnBs and hostels and even tried Couchsurfing.

You’ll find fantastic  spa hotels in Tenerife  and great  family hotels in Tenerife , so it depends on what you’re looking for.

Roughly said, the northern part of Tenerife is great for hikers,  outdoor activities in Tenerife , and pristine nature lovers.

I recommend the south of the island such as Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos, or  Los Gigantes  for those who are looking for beach holidays and all the facilities of a tourist hub.

There are many  amazing things to do in Costa Adeje  and the surrounding area.

The starting point to tour the rest of the island

Santa Cruz de Tenerife , capital of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, is perfect to enjoy at any time of the year thanks to its pleasant climate. If you have organised a multi-day trip to tour the island, you must stop in this coastal city for at least 24 hours with its gardens, squares and terraces that are perfect for a drink. It is also known world-wide for its Carnival . You could even use Santa Cruz as your base and explore the rest of Tenerife by car. Here are some ideas for you.

Why not spend the first part of the day on the beach.

In the Canary Islands the weather is always pleasant, with the temperatures during the coldest months ranging between 16ºC and 24ºC. As soon as you wake up you could go for a swim, sunbathe or go for a stroll along its best-known beach, Las Teresitas . It is alive with palm trees and, although it belongs to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, it is located in the town of San Andrés. Its calm waters and great facilities are ideal if you are travelling with children. A little further from the city lie the beaches of Taganana and Benijo. The council has installed a series of webcams so that you can check them out in real time. 

Other places to take a dip The César Manrique Maritime Park , a complex of several swimming pools with artificial waterfalls and beautiful views. If instead of relaxing you are looking for a bit of “action”, try diving, snorkelling, surfing, sailing or paddle-surfing. You will find a whole range of activities at the Marine Sports Centre .

Time to leave San Andrés and return to Santa Cruz. We recommend a spot of shopping and some food in the iconic Nuestra Señora de África market.

Before you leave the coast make sure you take some snaps for your memories, either on the Las Teresitas beach or in the marina, of the dozens of anchored yachts. Afterwards, you could take a leisurely stroll through the city's shopping streets and pick up a few souvenirs. You've probably worked up an appetite by now, and you've got several options. Treat yourself and book a table at one of the restaurants recommended by the Michelin Guide. A treat for any palate.

Another safe bet is the iconic Nuestra Señora de África market , where you will find different varieties of cheeses, wines, freshly made food and endless flavours, to eat in or take away. It only opens in the morning and is perfect if you're looking for an authentic taste of Santa Cruz.

Many of the city's tourist hot spots can be discovered on foot.

You could start by visiting some of the most famous squares, for example Plaza de la Candelaria, Plaza Weyler, Plaza del Príncipe de Asturias and Plaza de España . Hidden underneath the latter, in an underground gallery, are the remains of San Cristóbal castle, which was the first important fortification on the island in the 16th century. However, the best preserved castle in the city is San Juan Bautista. One of the best things about walking around Santa Cruz de Tenerife is that it has a large permanent outdoor exhibition. As you stroll along its avenues and parks, for example, García Sanabria , you will come across works by renowned artists such as Henry Moore, Martín Chirino, Joan Miró and Óscar Domínguez.

Before you leave Santa Cruz, make sure to visit the La Concepción church or the San Francisco church . And if you feel like visiting a museum, the Nature and Archeology (MUNA) houses the famous Guanche mummies. The most popular museum in the city is the modern Tenerife Espacio de las Artes (TEA) which has showcased works by artists such as Warhol, Ansel Adams, Patti Smith, Carlos Schwartz, Dorothea Lange and Henry Moore. If you're travelling with the little ones, you'll love the Palmetum Botanical Garden and its impressive collection of palm trees (the best in Europe).

Santa Cruz is teeming with bars, restaurants, taverns and charming terraces where you can go for tapas, try tasting menus or sip a glass of wine.

Relax while nibbling on some “papas arrugadas” (wrinkled potatoes) with spicy mojo sauce, grilled cheese, “almogrote” (a kind of cheese paté), “ropa vieja” (a typical dish made with shredded beef and chicken)... In this page you can choose from the different beach clubs, roof tops, gastrobars and restaurants the city has to offer.

The best way to end your visit is a show, either before or after dinner. The impressive and iconic white building of the Tenerife Auditorium , designed by Santiago Calatrava, offers an impressive repertoire of music, dance and opera shows. Check the schedule, because you won't want to miss out on one of these performances.

To fly to the island, there are two international airports: Tenerife South and Tenerife North (the latter just 10 minutes by car from the city). There is a tourist bus and train that connects the main points of interest in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, such as the Plaza de España or the Auditorium. This map shows the different stops and timetables. Some of the most recommended trips from the city are: - The Anaga Rural Park, declared a Biosphere Reserve. You can explore different paths and bathe in the coves of fine black sand, for example Benijo. - Teide National Park, where you can find a volcano (its summit is highest point in Spain), which you can visit by cable car. - The nearby world heritage city: San Cristóbal de La Laguna. - Boat trip to the neighbouring island of La Gomera. - Whale watching by sailing boat.

When to go on the route

Any time of the year is a good time to visit Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the island in general, but the Carnival at the end of February should be on your bucket list. It is considered one of the best in the world. In this case you must book accommodation in advance though. At Casa del Carnaval you will find a permanent exhibition with traditional carnival costumes, posters and a sensory space with coloured lights and sounds that are typical of this celebration.

Visit Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the capital of Tenerife. It is on the north-east coast of the island. Santa Cruz de Tenerife was named one of the best five places to live in the world by 'The Guardian' newpaper in 2012.

Explore Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the island's capital and shared capital of the Canary Island. Its deep natural harbour has historically led to a period of wealth and many fine historic buildings can be seen in the city. Even today the harbour is one of the busiest in Spain and is also an important harbour for the cruise ships which visit Tenerife from around the world.

Santa Cruz's main beach is 'Las Teresitas' which is a fine golden beach courtesy of millions of tonnes of sand from the Sahara desert. With palm trees and a back-drop of the Anaga mountains it is consisdered the most beautiful beach on Tenerife.

In the town itself head for Plaza de Espana near the harbour. Between here and Plaza de Candelaria is an excellent shopping area and Calle de Castillo is the main shopping street. If you are looking for some lively nightlife then head down to Avenida Anaga on the waterfront.

The Plaza de Espana is the heart of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and is the biggest Plaza on the Canary Islands.  The square has a large artificial lake and is very attractive and a great place to pass some time.

Nearby is the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife which is home to the Auditorio, the most iconic building of Tenerife. The Auditorio de Tenerife is Tenerife's modern auditorium designed by Santiago Calatrava and has a style reminiscent of the Sydney Opera House. Its distinctive shape has been designed to look like the sails of a yacht. It is now one of Tenerife's most famous buildings.

Also by the port is one of Tenerife's water parks, the Parque Maritimo Cesar Manrique. This is an area of about 22000 square meters of saltwater pools and associated facilities designed by Canaries architect Cezar Manrique.

Next to this is the Palmetum of Tenerife which is a large botanical garden and contains one of the biggest collections of palm trees in the world. From here you also get some lovely views of the sea. There is also another excellent park in Santa Cruz, the Parque Garcia Sanabria with gardens and fountains and it is a pleasant place to relax.

One of Santa Cruz de Tenerife's main monuments is the Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de la Concepcion, a church which dates back to the 16th century and was one of the first churches to be built on Tenerife. It is sometimes referred to as the Cathedral of Santa Cruz but it is not a cathedral. The only cathedral on Tenerife is the Cathedral of La Laguna.

The Iglesia de San Fransisco contains a number of artworks and is considered to be the best example of Baroque architecture in the Canary Islands.

Also worth visiting is the Mercado de Nuestra Senora de Africa which is a lively bazaar and food market and worth heading for in the mornings.

If you're not sure when to visit Santa Cruz then consider carnival time in February. The Carnival of Santa Cruz is the biggest in Spain and the second biggest in the world after that of Rio de Janiero. The carnival is such a popular and important one that it is being considered for UNESCO World Heritage status. It is already a 'Fiesta of International Tourist Interest'.

The Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre contains the cannon which shot off the arm of Admiral Nelson! The museum houses collections of archeology and biology and is famous for its Guanche mummies.

Culturally, geographically, and spiritually, Tenerife is a one-off. There is nowhere else in Europe where you swing from cliff-clasped, black-sand beaches battered by Atlantic waves to whale-visited bays, mountain wineries, and time-lost villages that are every bit as lovely as when the Spanish rocked up 500 years ago.

You might bring a tick-list of places you want to visit, but some of your best moments are bound to be the serendipitous ones: Wandering through vineyards and banana plantations that stagger down to the sea; grabbing lunch with locals at an offbeat guachinche (rural pop-up restaurant); or eating boat-fresh fish on an old-town plaza in the blue dusk.

Tenerife’s reputation as a package-vacation party island precedes it, but venture away from the built-up southern resorts and you’ll be surprised. The farther you reach into the wild mountains and fairytale laurel forests of the north, the more you realize this isn’t an island that’s too well-known – rather a place still ripe for discovery.

Best for historic strolls

La Laguna is a knockout. The former Tenerife capital has a staggeringly well-preserved, Unesco-listed historic center that brims with churches, convents, and pastel-painted colonial mansions that pop in bright shades of blue, lemon, green, violet, and orange – all topped off by a fine cathedral . A deliriously colorful and festive city, with one of the island's hottest marcha (nightlife) scenes, La Laguna is like the Havana of the Canaries.

This is no fluke. Founded in 1496, the 16th- to 18th-century Canarian mansions that wrap around courtyards, featuring delicately-carved wooden balconies and oriel windows, were the model for many towns in the Americas. On Calle San Agustín , they line up as if for a permanent photo shoot, including the most fabulous of the lot, Casa del Montañés . Down the same street is the Museo de la Historia de Tenerife , a gloriously rambling, creaky-floored 16th-century mansion that spells out the past in artifacts. For slow Canarian food prepared with organic produce, tapas, and sustainably-brewed island beers, grab a table at Tasca 61 .

Parque Nacional del Teide

Best for volcanic landscapes.

All eyes are on Teide from the moment you fly into the island. Seen from the plane, this perfectly-etched volcano – Spain’s highest peak at 3715m (12,180ft) – seems to swallow the island whole. The pop-up effect is not lessened when you get closer to its dark summit, which is often wreathed in clouds.

The volcano is the icing on the cake of the 189-sq-km (73-sq-mile), Unesco-listed Parque Nacional del Teide, bang in the heart of the island. The journey up is breathtaking, with Canarian pine and laurel forests giving way to an arid, desert-like moonscape of surreal, rust-red rock formations that blaze in the light of the setting sun. The park’s cinematic backdrops haven’t gone unnoticed: It has appeared in films like Clash of the Titans (2010). Scientists are mad about its Martian landscapes. NASA’s Perseverance Rover, which searched for extraterrestrial life on Mars, was trained here because the climate and landscape were so similar.

The national park is sensational hiking country, whether for a gentle walk around the twisted lava pinnacles of Roques de García , a tough hike up the frozen lava flows of Pico Viejo , or tackling the big one – the full-day climb to Pico del Teide ( online reservations only). Hoof it up and you’ll better appreciate the views of La Gomera , La Palma , and El Hierro bubbling up from the Atlantic, but you can also take the cable car.

But as astronomers say, it's by night that the park really shines, and when you cast your eyes to the heavens, this Starlight Destination has some of the darkest, starriest skies in the northern hemisphere with 83 of the 88 recognized constellations visible on crystal-clear nights. Even with the naked eye, you can see the misty band of the Milky Way, but you’ll see more peeking through one of the gigantic telescopes at the Observatorio del Teide or on one of the tours run by Volcano Teide Experience .

Best for Canarian tradition and wine tasting

Winging you back to the early days of Spanish colonization, 16th-century La Orotava sits pretty in a lush valley to the island’s mountainous north, with Teide looming on the horizon. Its tangle of cobbled streets and flower-dotted plazas are instantly endearing and the atmosphere is wholly Canarian (no tourist tat here).

For a true flavor of the town, kick off with a wander along architecturally striking Calle San Francisco, where beautifully preserved 17th-century mansions are festooned with ornately carved balconies. Top billing goes to the Casa de los Balcones , with a lovely courtyard cafe where you can grab a coffee before continuing to nearby Casa Lercaro , with its baroque wooden gallery and palm-filled courtyard.

La Orotava is less about randomly ticking off sights and more about getting a slice of local life. Hang out at one of the old-fashioned tascas (bars) for drinks, tapas, and dominoes or buy hand-milled gofio (flour made from toasted grains) at La Maquina . Visitors can also arrange a vineyard tour and tasting (try Bodegas Tajinaste ) and then pin down a nearby guachinche for a simple, dirt-cheap feast with local wine. For a charming boutique sleep in a 17th-century mansion, book into Hotel Victoria .

The Orotava Valley is Tenerife’s fruit basket, with banana plantations and vineyards clambering up its slopes. The wines here are largely refreshing whites, made with the Listán Blanco grape, and vines are braided the traditional way (a technique known as cordón trenzado ). It’s gorgeous hiking country, with a web of trails dipping into fragrant Canarian pinewoods and views sweeping down to the coast.

Best for old-school Canary charm

Ask locals for a slice of genuine Canarian life and they will likely direct you toward Garachico on the north coast. Everyone has a soft spot for the historic streets of this charismatic town, battered by the fizzing surf of the Atlantic – but boy has it been through the wars. In the 17th century, it boomed as the home of wealthy merchants exporting Malmsey wine, but a huge volcanic eruption in 1706 wiped out its port and buried the town in lava. Freak floods, storms, fires, and a plague of locusts – real Old Testament stuff – have also ravaged Garachico over the centuries.

Today it’s a delightfully low-key base for exploring the north coast, with cobbled lanes, beautifully preserved 16th- and 17th-century colonial mansions, convents, monasteries, and churches to explore. Wander the waterfront where fishers cast their lines to the sea-gazing fortress of Castillo de San Miguel , whose museum throws you in at the deep end of Garachico’s history. Framed by lofty palms and Indian laurel trees, nearby Plaza Libertad buzzes with kids playing, couples strolling, and old men in cafes whiling away afternoons over drinks and dominoes. If you want to swim, head for the natural lava pools at El Caletón .

High above it all, Mirador de Garachico cracks open the view along the coast and has a bar serving local wine and putting creative riffs on Canarian ingredients. Back in town, you’ll sleep sweetly in the lovingly-restored, 16th-century mansion Hotel La Quinta Roja .

Los Gigantes

Best for diving and cliff drama.

Hugging Tenerife’s western shores, where the island’s highest cliffs drop abruptly into the wave-lashed, blue Atlantic, Los Gigantes delivers plenty of drama, but far fewer crowds than you’ll find swarming around south coast resorts. Indeed, this low-rise, white-washed town is nicely chilled with a seafront promenade, the dusky volcanic sands of Playa de la Arena , and fiery sunsets that backlight La Gomera.

You’re here, of course, for the giants: The basalt cliffs of Acantilados de los Gigantes , which punch 600m (1960ft) above the frothing ocean. For the best views from above, walk to the end of Calle Tabaiba to a natural lookout point .

For the full-on effect of the cliffs looming above you, nothing beats heading out on the water by kayak or stand-up paddleboard with Teno Activo . The submerged base of the cliffs teems with marine life, making this one of the island’s diving hotspots. Los Gigantes Diving Centre plunges into the deep blue to find stingrays, barracuda, and turtles swirling between the volcanic arches and caverns.

In 2021, Tenerife’s west coast was declared Europe’s first Unesco Whale Heritage Site. Its mild climate makes it one of the world’s best places for whale watching. Conservation-focused tours, such as those led by CB Marítima Acantilados , practically guarantee sightings of pilot whales at close quarters, as well as dolphins, porpoises, and – if you are incredibly lucky – a blue whale or an orca.

Puerto de la Cruz

Best for black-sand bays and botanical gardens.

Strung along a rocky shoreline and necklaced with volcanic bays, Puerto de la Cruz is one of Tenerife’s most liveable and loveable resorts, thanks to its easygoing charm, buzzing cafe scene, plazas, and parks. The Victorians raved about its spas, and there’s still a dash of that languor in the air today, thanks to a boardwalk for strolling, a luxurious spa enveloped in tropical gardens at Hotel Botánico , and the remarkable Jardín Botánico , with its jungle of Canarian plants and flowers, one-off palm collection, and 200-year-old Australian Moreton Bay fig.

A dive into the town’s historic center should begin at the bronze statue of the fisherwoman at Playa del Muelle, where La Cofradía de Pescadores dishes up fresh seafood. It’s paces away from the grand, palm-rimmed central square Plaza Charco (“Puddle Plaza”), so named because it used to flood every time a storm blew in. From here, lose yourself in the tangle of lanes in the old fishing district of La Ranilla, now a hip-and-happening quarter, where cottages have been reborn as artsy-cool bars and restaurants, like Agora , with a pretty terrace out front for vinos and tapas.

Beach-wise, Playa Martiánez wins, with its arc of dark sand and gentle waves ideal for getting to grips with surfing. But if you prefer your swims with a dash more style, check out the vast saltwater pools at Lago Martiánez , the volcanic rock vision of late Spanish artist, sculptor, and architect César Manrique.

Parque Rural del Teno

Best for mountain highs.

Shaggy mountains thrust up above orchards, terraces, and valleys on the island’s northwestern tip, where the volcanic cliffs of Parque Rural de Teno rear up above the raging ocean like a dragon’s backbone. It’s a corner of the island that is still deliciously off the radar, with a dawn-of-creation beauty about it. The area is spectacularly biodiverse, carpeted with laurel and beech forests and strawberry trees that the endangered laurel pigeon and spotted lizard both love.

On the rocky headland at Punta de Teno , where a lonely lighthouse stands, you can feel the full force of nature, with Atlantic waves battering a black-sand beach and jagged mountains rippling into the distance. The sunsets are worth lingering for. The road is restricted (no private cars during daylight hours or on the weekends), but you can get here by taxi, bike, or taking bus 369 from Buenavista del Norte.

The TF-436 road that corkscrews dizzyingly up to Masca acts as a drumroll for the insanely photogenic village, clinging to a mountaintop for dear life and with a great fang of rock protruding above it. Grab a bowl of cactus-flavored ice cream with palm honey at one of the local cafes before embarking on one of Tenerife’s most phenomenal hikes down the Barranco de Masca ravine to the ocean – providing you have a permit , that is.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Best for carnival and culture.

Though often overlooked by travelers in the mad dash to the coast, the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife really is the island’s beating heart. If you need proof, visit during February’s Carnaval, a feast of all-night fiestas, parades of sparkly costumes, and Latino-style hip-wiggling second only to Rio de Janeiro.

Culturally, Santa Cruz has the edge. It has some unmissable historic sights like Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción , originally built in 1498 just after the city was conquered, with its intricately wrought wooden Mudéjar (Islamic-style architecture) ceilings. But the city’s real showstoppers are more contemporary. The strikingly angular, light-flooded Tenerife Espacio de las Artes (TEA) , bearing the minimalist hallmark of Pritzker Prize-winning architects Herzog & de Meuron, presents an exciting roster of exhibitions of up-and-coming Spanish art. The city has its own Sydney Opera House in the form of Auditorio de Tenerife , a crashing white wave of an auditorium, famed for both Santiago Calatrava’s architecture and its acoustics. If you can’t catch a concert, join a guided tour of the building or go for a drink in the lobby cafe.

It’s a joy to also just wander the city’s parks, plazas, and streets, where you might happen upon a sculpture by Henry Moore or Joan Miró, hang out on a cafe terraza (terrace) on Plaza Candelaria or find picnic fixings at Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África . With its Islamic-style arches and patios, and stalls heaving with fresh fruit and vegetables, fish, wine, and local cheese, the market is your backstage pass to local life, especially in the morning as people wake up over churros and coffee.

This is a central street with a pedestrian zone which is always a lovely place for a stroll, especially if you stop and contemplate the abundant vegetation, including jacarandas, Indian laurels and the characteristic Canary Island palm trees.

Another unmissable attraction in Santa Cruz is the new, modern Tenerife Auditorium , renamed the Auditorio Adán Martín in 2011. Work of the Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava, it’s a spectacular building that’s similar to the Sydney Opera House, thanks to the structure of its outer shell. This shell rests upon a central base, freeing up one of its sides to spread out like a wing, defying the laws of gravity. Its appeal is down to its cutting-edge architecture, and the fact that it is one of the leading cultural spaces in the Canary Islands. Dance, theatre, circus and concerts all form part of its varied line-up.

Fiesta in Tenerife is all about Carnival . The colour, the fantasy, the joy and the spectacular costumes flood every single one of the streets of the city with an extraordinary festive atmosphere for days on end. It lasts until Ash Wednesday, with the Entierro de la Sardina [Burial of the Sardine] ceremony, and then returns the following weekend (the weekend of the piñata ). It’s one of the most important carnivals in the world and has been declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest.

Also worth mentioning are the festivities celebrated in May and July, the latter of which are dedicated to Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of sailors. They both provide a unique opportunity to discover the city’s popular traditions, folklore and culture.

Beaches in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

With the crystal-clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean as a backdrop, the beaches of Santa Cruz de Tenerife offer spectacularly contrasting scenery. The closest one to the capital, and the most popular with tourists, is the Playa de las Teresitas beach , with its golden sand and surfeit of palm trees. A good tip is the Playa de las Gaviotas beach , although it’s a bit of an effort, as it is 13 kilometres away from Santa Cruz. It has black volcanic sand and sits at the feet of dramatic cliffs. And if you want to enjoy spectacular nature at its purest, you can’t beat Playa de Benijo beach , which is 26 kilometres from Santa Cruz. It’s worth the journey, as you’ll be greeted by a unique landscape and views that will take your breath away. Not far from here is Playa del Roque de las Bodegas beach , where you can enjoy a magnificent sunset in the Anaga Rural Park , a Biosphere Reserve since 2015, which stands out for the valleys and ravines that lead down to the ocean.
