- Switzerland Tourism, Occitanie Regional Tourism and Leisure Board, Vienna Tourist Board, Renfe and Turismo de Galicia are among the 2023 winners.
On the evening of the 3 rd of October, the European Travel Commission (ETC) and Eurail revealed the winners of the third edition of the Rail Tourism Awards . The ceremony took place during the ‘Austrian Night’ Welcome Reception of the World Passenger Festival in Vienna, the first event of the annual, two-day public transportation forum, hosted by ÖBB Austrian Federal Railways and Wiener Linien.
Launched in 2021, the Rail Tourism Awards aim to acknowledge the most outstanding marketing campaigns showcasing the thrill, freedom and sustainability of travelling Europe by train. This year’s awards were organised with the support of the Austrian National Tourist Office (ANTO).
The Rail Tourism Awards has grown year-on-year, with the third edition receiving a record 31 entries submitted by a diverse array of participants in the European travel sector, including rail operators, tourism organisations and marketing agencies. The three winners and honourable mention were ultimately decided by a distinguished jury, composed of Elke Dens of The Travel Foundation, Mischa Schreuder of Fitzroy, Nicky Gardner and Susanne Kries of hidden europe, Marit Ruuda of the European Commission, and ‘The Man in Seat 61,’ Mark Smith.
Austria’s State Secretary for Tourism, Susanne Kraus-Winkler , was delighted to be present at the award ceremony and to congratulate the winners. She said of the event “The Rail Tourism Awards is the best platform to promote existing mobility offers and their advantages. More and more guests want to travel sustainably. A well developed and managed public transport network is key for our guests to move freely to and in their chosen destination. Receiving the Rail Tourism Award is an important acknowledgement of the industry’s efforts. I am particularly pleased that the Vienna Tourist Board is among the winners of the Rail Tourism Awards. Congratulations to all award winners!”
Switzerland Tourism captivates the judges with its Ride of a Lifetime
Grand Train Tour of Switzerland: The Ride of a Lifetime by Switzerland Tourism was awarded Best Rail Tourism Campaign. This captivating short film starring Roger Federer and Trevor Noah masterfully showcases Switzerland’s breathtaking scenery and outstanding rail infrastructure. Through this campaign, Switzerland Tourism demonstrates the joys of in-country travel with wit, precision and mesmerising cinematography showing the beauty of Swiss rail journeys.
The jury praised the film’s storytelling and creative brilliance, as well as the impressive reach of the campaign, with 82 million views on YouTube. In addition, the 99% positive comment rate serves as a testament to Switzerland Tourism’s ability to capture the public’s enthusiasm for sustainable travel and engage a broad spectrum of potential holidaymakers.
Occitanie Rail Tourism triumphs for innovative multi-media approach
Occitanie Rail Tour by Occitanie Regional Tourism and Leisure Board was awarded Best Regional Campaign for its innovative and inclusive approach to connecting with a wide spectrum of travellers. Through the combination of several promotional channels, including TV and social media advertising, a collaboration with a cycling app and tailor-made Michelin Guides, the Occitanie Regional Tourism and Leisure Board successfully demonstrated to each demographic the allure of a rail tour of Occitanie.
The judges praised how this campaign managed to respond to the challenge that environmentally-conscious tourists often encounter when looking for sustainable transportation options for the final leg of their journey. The campaign presents rail travel as the solution to traversing ‘the last mile’, demonstrating how this sustainable mode of transport can seamlessly connect tourists to breathtaking natural landscapes and authentic cultural experiences without the need for a car.
Vienna Tourist Board champions cross-border rail tourism
Vienna by Train – Uniting Cities by Vienna Tourist Board was awarded Best Cross-Border Campaign for championing rail tourism by connecting cities across borders and promoting inter-cultural exchange between tourists and locals. This campaign, which is comprised of various promotional initiatives, is led by a video illustrating how city trips by rail can provide vital support to local businesses, foster rich cultural encounters, and breathe new life into a community, all while delighting viewers with the distinctive Austrian sense of humour.
The judges commended the ingenuity, imagination and wit of the campaign. They praised the portrayal of rail tourism as a means of promoting solidarity across borders and between cities and enhancing the quality of life for local residents. They were particularly impressed by the campaign’s remarkable reach, amassing not only 143 million impressions but also gaining the attention of leading media outlets such as Zeit, Süddeutsche Zeitung, and La Repubblica.
Galician enthusiasm for slow travel wins over the jury
Trenes turísticos en Galicia (Galicia region tourist trains) by Renfe and Turismo de Galicia received an Honourable Mention from the jury for providing tourists with an engaging, slow travel experience of Galicia via 14 tourist rail lines. This initiative introduces travellers to the unique gastronomy, landscapes and history of Galicia, promoting slow, sustainable tourism through the promise of more authentic experiences and the opportunity to discover the hidden gems of the region.
The jury was impressed by how this campaign promotes the symbiotic relationship between travellers and locals. The itineraries connect tourists with the independent businesses and attractions that rely on them to thrive, in turn preserving regional traditions and crafts. By achieving a remarkable 90% seat occupancy and experiencing significant growth in the past year, this campaign has undeniably made a substantial impact on a region that typically sees fewer tourists.

Bucks County Hospitality Destinations Recognized With Tourism Awards
B UCKS COUNTY, PA — In celebration of National Travel & Tourism Week, Visit Bucks County (VBC) recognized individuals and organizations during an awards celebration at The Inn at Fox Briar Farm earlier this month.
Honorees were nominated by their peers in the local hospitality industry. Each year, the U.S. Travel Association spearheads National Travel & Tourism Week to raise awareness of the benefits of travel to well-being and the economy.
During the awards portion of the event, Bucks County Commissioners Diane M. Ellis-Marseglia and Robert J. Harvie were on hand to recognize individuals for excellence in guest services, hospitality, innovation, and promoting local tourism and to proclaim National Travel & Tourism Week in the county.
“We are pleased to present Visit Bucks County with a proclamation recognizing May 19-25 as National Travel & Tourism Week throughout the County of Bucks,” said Marseglia, “We thank the Visit Bucks County staff and Board of Directors and all of you for the hard work to market and support the industry.”
This year's award winners with Bucks County Commissioners Bob Harvie and Diane Ellis-Marseglia, left, and Visit Bucks County President/COO Paul Bencivengo.
Each May Visit Bucks County recognizes the achievements of the tourism and hospitality workforce in Bucks County by presenting employees and organizations awards in five categories.
The 2024 Visit Bucks County Travel & Tourism Week Award honorees are:
- Guest Service Excellence Award: Dennis Brislin, Sesame Place Philadelphia. This award goes to a frontline staff member with a positive attitude who is willing to go the extra mile to help visitors and interact with customers on a daily basis.
- Hospitality Leadership Award: Alicia Singh, Holiday Inn Express Bensalem. This award honors an individual who has made significant contributions to the tourism and hospitality industry, ultimately increasing visitation to Bucks County.
- Rising Star Award: Ahmani Taylor, Hiltons of Warrington. This award is presented to a young professional aspiring to a long career in the tourism and hospitality industry.
- Tourism Innovation Award: Christopher Marano, Bucks County Joyrides. This award honors a business/organization who implements new and creative ways to bring visitors to Bucks County.
- Visit Bucks County Award: Justin Seery, Peddler’s Village; Jennifer Martin, Washington Crossing Historic Park and Ryan Seiz and Tim Tabor, Warwick Farm Brewing.
Key Tourism Growth
During the event, Visit Bucks County President/COO Paul Bencivengo also shared some key tourism statistics that highlighted industry growth over the past year.
“In 2023, Bucks County welcomed 8.2 million visitors. This was a 2.5 percent increase over visitation in 2022. Those 8.2 million visitors generated $1.2 billion in economic impact which represents a 2.2 percent increase over 2022. In 2023, the total hospitality workforce also grew to 28,675 jobs,” reported Bencivengo.
Growth in visitation also continued into quarter one of 2024, he continued.
"Bucks County has achieved an average increase of +3.5 percent in lodging occupancy as compared to the same period in 2023," he said. "This significant upward trend in lodging occupancy in 2024 is happening as lodging room rates have softened, making it more affordable to stay overnight in Bucks County."
Bencivengo also shared that VisitBucksCounty.com saw record traffic last year with more than five million pageviews to the site and more than 406 million impressions across digital and social media channels. “We attribute this record engagement to our focus on quality content creation. Our short-term video content performs extremely well across all demographics," he said.
“Visit Bucks County also has brand campaigns currently in-market with static and digital billboards in New York and Northern New Jersey markets,” reported Bencivengo. “Broadcast and streaming commercials will also enter the market this month and will run through July attracting visitors to the area.”
Visit Bucks County promotes Bucks County for visitors to explore the trails, plan outdoor adventure, family-friendly getaways, romantic escapes and to visit the many towns and attractions throughout all the seasons.

European Railway Award
The railway sector is full of bright ideas, ingenious innovation and bold policy initiatives devised to enhance, grow and strengthen the rail mode today and for the future. The European Railway Award, jointly organised by the Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies (CER) and the Association of the European Rail Supply Industry (UNIFE), celebrates these achievements by recognising the inspired individuals behind them.

The winners were announced on 29 January at the 17th edition of the European Railway Award, held in Brussels. Congratulations to our winners and warm thanks to all our speakers and guests.
Read more here about this year's ceremony marking the European Year of Skills.
More photos available soon.
First presented in 2007, the European Railway Award attracts more than 500 guests from all over Europe, including high-level politicians and transport stakeholders.
The award comes with prize money, donated to a charity organisation of the laureate’s choice.
The jury for the European Railway Award consists of railway and rail industry CEOs, EU-level political decision makers, past winners and selected journalists. They consider the nominees and select a winner through a vote.
In previous years, the European Railway Award was divided into a technical category and a political category. These were combined in 2018 to award a single outstanding winner, now our 'Rail Trailblazer'. Alongside this prize, the European Railway Award's 'Rail Champion' title is an honorary recognition jointly bestowed by the organisers.

The new air terminal opened in November 2023 and is part of the airport’s plan to increase its passenger traffic in line with the country’s wider growth plans, along with projects such as the rail network being built by Etihad Rail.
Sorlini, who previously worked at Emirati sovereign wealth fund ADQ, confirmed the connections between ADA and Etihad Rail, both part of ADQ’s portfolio, as an area of potential growth.

Construction of the Etihad Rail network began in 2016 and has seen 900km of track laid across the country, with the project marking the end of its second building stage in February 2023 .
Despite this, the network has yet to begin full passenger operations though the first service between Abu Dhabi and Al Dhannah was conducted earlier this year.
In addition to spanning the UAE’s seven emirates, the network will also link to Saudi Arabia and Oman, connections that Sorlini said are key to improving the reputation of the entire Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.
She said: “We’re also talking about Saudi opening up to tourism and Oman has big plans there. The important thing is that all of the GCC region becomes a tourist destination.”
During Airport Technology ‘s trip to Abu Dhabi it also spoke to Etihad’s Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer about the airline’s focus on fleet efficiency as part of its sustainability efforts.

Europe’s Rail Tourism Champion Unveiled at World Passenger Festival 2023
On the evening of the 3rd of October, the European Travel Commission (ETC) and Eurail revealed the winners of the third edition of the Rail Tourism Awards
On the evening of the 3 rd of October, the European Travel Commission (ETC) and Eurail revealed the winners of the third edition of the Rail Tourism Awards.
Austria’s State Secretary for Tourism, Susanne Kraus-Winkler, was delighted to be present at the award ceremony and to congratulate the winners.
Grand Train Tour of Switzerland: The Ride of a Lifetime by Switzerland Tourism was awarded Best Rail Tourism Campaign .

Western Australia sees rise in women-only tourism experiences
Western Australia has been witnessing a rising trend in women-only tourism in the past six to 12 months. The development echoes a broader global movement towards creating safer, more inclusive travel opportunities tailored specifically for women.
“This year marked the launch of four innovative women-only travel products, reflecting a strong demand for experiences that allow women to connect deeply with both themselves and nature,” said Sueanne McCumstie, acting lead public relations manager, Tourism Western Australia.
“It aligns with the global trend of inclusivity and accessible tourism for all – including LGBTI, people living with accessibility needs and people seeking exclusive experiences,” she added.
Among the new offerings is a Bardi and Jawi Cultural Experience, on the Dampier Peninsula north of Broome. It invites women to explore the ‘secret women’s business’ of local indigenous women through activities like fishing, oystering, and bush tucker gathering. The four-night experience provides an immersive look into the roles and skills of indigenous women.
Another product is the Reddell Beach Walk and Talk Experiences by a local elder from Jarndu Ngaank Tours. Guests are introduced to significant cultural ceremonies, including a Welcome to Country, Smoking Ceremony, and Water Ceremony designed to blend education with personal healing and well-being through cultural insights.
In Margaret River, Swimming Women has expanded its offerings with a tour that takes participants through scenic swims in rock pools, rivers, and the Indian Ocean, exploring unique aquatic spots with regional stories and nourishing food.
The fourth tour is a Yorgars basket-weaving workshop which also promotes female empowerment through artistic expression through understanding the matriarchal legacies of the indigenous Nyungar people.
These developments were highlighted at a media event where nearly 80 international media members were updated on the latest tourism developments across Australia, before the launch of the Australian Tourism Exchange 2024 in Melbourne today (May 20).
This year’s event has attracted over 1,500 seller delegates and 700 global buyers, marking a 10 per cent increase in buyer participation from last year.

Password reminder, my japan railway, shortlist / art direction / integrated / 2024.
Railways are integral to life in Japan, but they tend to be taken for granted. To address this problem, we tried to restore a sense of human connection with railways. We designed hundreds of stamps for stations across Japan. And we made an app for collecting the stamp at each station on-site, a special book, a poster and more. As a result, we transformed everyday commuting into adventure. Our designs have a warm, handcrafted, traditional Japanese woodblock printing look — we used only six Japan Railway Signature Colors — that emotionally evoked a sense of human connection with railways.
