How does Rakuten work?

You may wonder how this is even possible — earning extra cash back for shopping online seems too good to be true. In its simplest form, Rakuten forms marketing agreements with individual retailers, which then pay the site commissions on purchases that begin there. Rakuten then passes some of those commissions on to you, the customer.

The retailer gets additional business, and you and Rakuten enjoy a cut of those purchases, essentially a win-win-win for all parties.

How to sign up for Rakuten

To earn bonus cash back or Amex points for your online purchases, visit Rakuten.com . Choose how you want to sign up for an account:

The site will auto-fill any matching retailers as you start typing in the store's name. I've typed in "Eti" as I start searching for Etihad Airways.

From that list, select your desired retailer, and you'll be redirected to its earning page. This will provide the earning rate(s) and any applicable restrictions.

To begin the online purchase process, click the "Shop Without Adding" or "Add to Chrome" (or your browser) if you want to add the plug-in button. If you already have the browser extension, simply click Shop Now.

A new window or tab will open, indicating you're being redirected to the merchant's website.

Rakuten automatically creates a shopping trip, and the merchant's website will load after a few seconds. Do not close that window . Shop as you normally would, and Rakuten will track your spending. You'll receive the bonus rewards in your account, generally within a day or two after completing the purchase.

You can review all account activity by clicking on My Account from the drop-down menu at the top-right corner. This includes all of your individual shopping trips and your earnings balance from transactions posted to your account.

Does everything count toward earning cash back?

Generally speaking, Rakuten will award cash back based on the subtotal of your purchase. This excludes shipping, taxes and other fees that aren't tied to the items or services you're buying.

Many merchants, however, will prevent you from earning rewards when you use discount codes not listed on Rakuten. We've even seen TPG readers miss out on thousands of bonus miles . You risk losing out on any earnings if you receive a targeted mailer or email offer and use that code when shopping through Rakuten. You may still get cash back — but be aware that you may not.

How do I get my rewards?

Every quarter, Rakuten will distribute your earnings based on the following schedule:

As you can see, receiving your payment will take roughly 45 days from the end of the quarter. However, if your balance at the end of these periods is $5 or less, it will roll into the next quarter. You'll never lose the rewards you've earned; they just won't be paid until your cumulative balance surpasses $5.

You can receive a check in the mail or a deposit into a PayPal account, whichever is more convenient.

Or, if travel is on your mind as you look ahead, you can opt to earn Membership Rewards points instead.

Changing your earning preference

In 2019, Rakuten added the ability for all members to select between two earning types : cash back or American Express Membership Rewards points.

Many online shoppers initially prefer to receive a check or automatic PayPal deposit, but more advanced travelers may want to switch to Amex points. This option is available to anyone with a Membership Rewards-earning card, including The Platinum Card® from American Express or the American Express® Gold Card .

Once you've made this change, your earning rate will shift from a set cash-back percentage to a set number of Amex points per dollar spent. In other words, a merchant offering 2% cash back will now offer 2 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent — so a $100 purchase would earn 200 Amex points rather than $2 cash back.

Note that new members are automatically enrolled with the cash-back option enabled. It would be best to proactively change your earning preference before shopping trips to take home Amex points on the purchases (though your initial bonus for signing up will remain in the form of cash back).

Here's how to change your earning preference with Rakuten:

• Log in to your account.
• Hover over your name at the top right, then select "Account Settings."
• Scroll down to the "How would you like to get paid?" section.
• Temporarily select "PayPal" or "Big Fat Check."
• Find the American Express section, click "Switch to Membership Rewards® points," and follow the on-screen prompts to link your Amex account.

Once you have made the switch, all future earnings through Rakuten will be deposited into your Membership Rewards account using the schedule detailed above. However, any existing cash-back rewards will remain in cash and be sent via check or PayPal based on the above payment schedule.

This selection is irreversible, and the option for earning Membership Rewards points will disappear entirely from your account settings page.

Once you've started using Rakuten to earn cash back or bonus Amex points for your online shopping, there are some additional ways that you can maximize the site.

Activate in-store offers

The vast majority of earning opportunities through Rakuten apply to online shopping. But when you log in to your account, you'll notice an "In-Store Cash Back" link at the top.

This allows you to earn bonus rewards when you shop in select brick-and-mortar stores. That being said, you must do two things to be eligible:

• Add your card(s) : When you go to the in-store cash-back page, you should see a "Add a New Card" link near the top. To be eligible for these offers, you must add the credit card numbers for any cards you plan to use at participating stores.
• Link the offer : After adding your card, you must activate every individual offer you want to use. This is simple but essential. Visit the in-store offer page, find the merchant where you plan to shop, then click "Link Offer" underneath it.

When someone creates a Rakuten account based on your referral and spends at least $30 within 90 days of joining, you'll typically earn a one-time bonus of $30 (they will get a welcome bonus of $30 if those purchases are within the first 90 days).

And, if your account is set to earn Amex Membership Rewards, this will be 3,000 Amex points, worth $60 based on TPG's most recent valuations .

To refer others to Rakuten, log in to your account and look for the "Refer and Earn" link at the top of the homepage.

From there, you can send emails directly to friends or family members or share via Facebook or Twitter. You also have the option to copy your referral link and send it via text message or with another mode of communication.

Once someone signs up, they are listed in "Your Referral Activity" at the bottom of the refer-a-friend page. And once they've hit the required spending, they'll shift to the "Qualified" section. Your account balance will then jump by the bonus in effect at the time of enrollment, which will be paid out roughly 45 days after the end of the quarter.

To sign up for Rakuten, all you need to do is create an account with an email address and a password on their website . Once you do that, you can download the Rakuten browser extension — this will come in handy for quick activation when you're about to checkout online. Keep in mind that the brand must be part of Rakuten's network for you to receive cash back, and you must activate the browser extension every time you place an online order to receive the cash back. Alternatively, you can search for your preferred store on Rakuten's website and then click through to the retailers website, this activates tracking to ensure you get cash back once you make an eligible purchase.

You can easily double check to see if the brand is part of the network by typing it into the Rakuten homepage, or keeping an eye out for the Rakuten cash back banner that will automatically pop up on the brand's page to remind you that you can receive cash back from the brand.

You can also download the Rakuten app for your phone and add your credit cards and debit cards to your Rakuten wallet so any in-store purchases you make with those cards will be eligible for cash back offers .

When it comes to actually receiving your cash back earnings, you'll need to provide either PayPal information so they can digitally send your cash back or a mailing address so they can mail you a check.

Cash-back earnings

You can browse various cash back offers on the Rakuten homepage. For the most part, the amount of cash back you receive will depend on the brand you're ordering from; cash back can be as low as 1% and as much as around 20% — and there's no limit to how much money you can cash out.

For example, when clicking through Rakuten you might typically earn 3% cash back from purchases made at Ulta Beauty, 2.5% cash back from GameStop, 3% from JCPenney and 1.5% from Nike. So let's say you spend $100 at Ulta Beauty; you'll earn $3 for that purchase.

More popular retailers, like Walmart and Amazon, have more restrictions on what you can earn cash back for. You can currently receive 1% cash back from purchasing certain items from Walmart — Rakuten cash back is not available for purchases on furniture, health, camping gear and Apple products, to name a few. Purchases from Amazon are not currently eligible to receive cash back.

You'll receive your total cash back earnings on a quarterly basis through either PayPal or a physical check mailed to your address (depending on which option you chose). You can go into your account to view your cash back earnings history at any time, and it will also tell you on what date you can expect to receive your next payment.

If for some reason you notice that you are missing cash back from a recent shopping trip or online order, it's easy to submit a support ticket to make sure you receive those earnings. You'll need to log in to Rakuten, navigate to the Help page, click on the "Missing Cash Back" option and fill out the details of your order, including the date you placed the order and the amount you paid.

And if you're an American Express cardholder with a card that earns Amex Membership Rewards® points , you can choose to earn Amex rewards points instead of cash back for purchases you make through Rakuten. In this case, the cash back you earn from Rakuten will be converted to rewards points and transferred to your Amex account. Occasionally, some of the stores and brands on Rakuten's network will have what's called double cash back offers. So let's say H&M usually offers 2% cash back on orders through Rakuten — with double cash back, you can now receive 4% back on your order. It's a great way for you to earn even more for items you have to order anyway.

Similar to the PayPal Honey browser extension, Rakuten also offers some discount codes for select shops (though, Rakuten's discount codes are not as expansive as Honey's). It's a nice way to pay a little less and receive cash back at the same time, especially since you cannot have Rakuten activated while also using another browser extension to save on your orders.

And to help put even more money back in your wallet, Rakuten even offers a credit card: the Rakuten Cash Back Visa® Credit Card . The card lets you earn an extra 3% when you shop through Rakuten (on top of the cash back you'd normally earn for having the browser extension activated). And for purchases from brands that aren't part of Rakuten's network, you can still earn 1% cash back when you pay with the card. And to top it all off, the card doesn't carry an annual fee.

For a credit card option with a slightly higher cash-back potential, though, you might consider the Citi Double Cash® Card since it earns 2% cash back on all purchases; 1% on purchases and 1% after you pay your bill. Popular retailers with Rakuten include Walmart, eBay, Macy's, Target, and Temu. When you first launch the app, you can find cash-back offers across these shops, and there are specific products cataloged in the "categories" section. Tapping on any retailer will activate the cash-back offer automatically, and you will be redirected to the respective online store. You can access your savings through the app, and get paid either through PayPal or a bank check. Overall, the app is relatively clean, well-designed and easy to use.

Among the best QR scanner apps for Android , ShopSavvy is an underrated tool that helps users compare prices. If you're ever at a store and see a product you find interesting, you can scan its barcode using ShopSavvy . The app will display a list of other retailers with the same product at comparable prices. Unlike other coupon apps, you'll notice ShopSavvy is incredibly barebones in design. You can add items to your wishlist, and the app will continuously search for the best deals across retailers online and bring the best prices to you.

ShopSavvy has a load of one-star reviews claiming the app is packed with advertisements and crashes often. In testing it, the app seemed to fulfill its purpose, albeit with sluggish performance and a rough aesthetic. You can upgrade to a premium version of the app, which strips all ads away, and surprisingly, we were able to get it for completely free as a welcome offer — so it is worth trying to see if you can grab the same offer as well.

Google Opinion Rewards

This app may seem a bit unconventional, but  Google Opinion Rewards is not a coupon or savings app, however, it is one you should be using. The app occasionally offers you simple surveys about the stores you've visited or restaurants where you've had meals. In return, you get an instant reward as a credit to your Google account. This money can be used to buy apps and games, or to pay for subscriptions within your apps. 

The surveys are usually short and involve selecting answers about your most recent outings  — things like confirming if you purchased an item at a specific store and what method you used for its payment.
