Rebel City Distillery launches Distillery Tour and Ireland’s Only Absinthe on the Cork Docklands

Rebel City Distillery, makers of the multi-award-winning Maharani Gin, have officially opened to the public as they launched the Rebel City Distillery Tour in their historic dockland’s location, in the repurposed former Ford Car Factory at the Marina. 

Founders Robert and Bhagya Barrett combine long-standing craft with a splash of cultural creativity in an iconic setting with the launch of the distillery tours as the next part of the long-term plans for the first distillery in the city in 50 years. 

Located in the repurposed Ford Car Factory, a Cork Landmark that has lain dormant for decades, the tour gives visitors insight into the distilling and blending processes that created the brands first offering, Maharani Gin, and the soon to be released, Ireland’s only publicly available Absinthe.

The founders were joined by the Deputy Lord Mayor Damian Boylan to officially launch the tours.

Local media, influencers and friends and family of the distillery were treated to a preview while sipping Maharani G&T’s, before being treated to an exclusive taste of the brand-new Absinthe, the first of its kind in Ireland, which they also launched at the event. 

Councillor Damian Boylan, Deputy Lord Mayor of Cork said:

“I was delighted to officially open the Rebel City Distillery Tours. The docklands in Cork are steeped in history, and it brings me great joy to see new life here, and that visitors from near and far will be able to get a taste of the fusion of old and new that I have seen here today.”

Robert Barrett, Master Distiller and Co-Founder of Rebel City Distillery shares:

“Opening our distillery to the public with our tours, and our soon to come Spirits School has always been our plan from the moment we found the location. We want to share the scientific and creative process behind the brand, we can’t wait to show what we have been doing – and how we have been doing it.” 

Bhagya Barrett, Co-Founder of Rebel Distillery added: 

“The concept for Rebel City Distillery has always been to do things a little different, while still connecting with the heritage of the spirits and of the world around us. We have been innovating since we first launched Maharani in 2020, and we are incredibly proud and excited to be producing our next product, Rebel City Distillery Absinthe which will be the only Irish absinthe available.”

The Absinthe, which is distilled on site in small batches and has handwritten, authentic labels, was created using a base recipe that Rebel City discovered in a French book dated 1871 and given the unique Rebel City twist. 

Blended with grande wormwood, green anise, and florence fennel, the Rebel City Absinthe pours clear, unlike previous bottles and the signature serve of Absinthe and iced water transforms it from crystal clear to a semi opaque white. 

Tours will run each Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Rebel City Distillery Unit P6 Marina Commercial Park Marina Commercial Park, Centre Park Rd, Cork, T12 XHP7. Tickets cost €25 and are available to purchase here.  

Bottles from the first batch of Absinthe (ABV 55%) will be available to purchase soon on the Rebel City Distillery website.

Smashing Pumpkins Unveil New Bourbon, Cut With Tea From Billy Corgan's Emporium

The Smashing Pumpkins are giving fans a new release to (ava) adore, with the launch of a new bourbon whiskey, inspired by the band's iconic discography and iconography.

Dubbed the "FEW Smashing Pumpkins Bourbon," the new 93-proof bottling is a collaboration between the band and U.S. distillery FEW Spirits, with a flavor cut with black tea from Madame Zuzu's Emporium, the boutique tea shop run by Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan and wife, Chloé Mendel Corgan. The accompanying bottle is designed by artist Katelan Foisy, who designed interior album art for Corgan's solo album, Ogilala , and has worked with the Pumpkins on stage backdrops for previous tours. Etched on the back of the label is the lyric, "Time is never time at all," taken from the band's hit single, "Tonight, Tonight", from 1996's  Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness .

The accompanying liquid starts with a straight bourbon that's aged for four years, that's then cut to bottling strength using "Midnight Rose" black tea from Corgan's tea shop. The finished product offers familiar bourbon notes of vanilla and caramel, balanced by hints of rose water, sandalwood and the black tea. Perhaps inspired by the band's diamond-selling Mellon Collie album, the tasting notes say to expect "bright aromas" of "ripe honeydew melon" as well.

Aside from paying tribute to the band's catalog, the new bourbon release also honors the shared Chicago roots of Corgan and FEW Spirits' founder and master distiller Paul Hletko.

"Whether you're making music, painting, blending tea, or distilling spirits, you're making art," Hletko says, in a release. "As a Chicagoan, I felt a personal responsibility to match the raw, primal energy of the Pumpkins."

Adds the longtime Pumpkins fan: "Songs like ‘I Am One', the opening track of the band's first album,  Gish , provided a ton of inspiration. Press ‘play' and you're immediately struck by these thumping, propulsive drums, joined seconds later by a tight bassline groove before crunching guitars kick in to round out what, for me, is such a signature sound. That's the driving, yet symphonic quality we wanted to bring to this liquid."

The FEW Smashing Pumpkins Bourbon is available to purchase now at select retailers across the U.S. and online . You can find out more at fewspirits.com . This is the latest musician collaboration from the distillery, which released a " Motor Oil Whiskey " with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in 2022.

As for the Smashing Pumpkins, the band is set to hit the road with Green Day and Rancid this month. The " Saviors Tour " kicks off June 29 at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. and wraps up Sept. 28 at Petco Park in San Diego.

This is a fully functioning distillery nested in Old Ford electrical transformer building . The building was built in 1920’s and have laid dormant since 1984 -2020 . The building can be cold during winters as the building was  built to not to retain heat . Advice to wear warm clothing .
