about the lodge

On the edge of one of the most beautiful national parks in Uganda… Our latest and most remote property of Nature Lodges, Kidepo Savannah Lodge does justice to this wildlife gem which has received several international awards as one of the greatest Parks of Africa. Being just 500 mt away from Kalokudo gate, the lodge is literally on a stone’s throw from the park. It offers unparalled vistas of the expansive Narus Valley, Mount Morungole and the distant mountain ranges which form the border with Southern Sudan.

The lodge is inspired by the savannah surroundings, the grasslands, rocky outcrops, and … by the karamajong, the tribe with their typical manyattas and colorful blankets.

The lodge had to blend in rather than stick out, so we opted for a choice between the more luxurious self-contained safari tents and comfortable lazy camping tents.

ACCOMMODATION

Safari tent.

Kidepo Savannah Lodge boasts twelve beautifully appointed safari tents on raised decks. Each of the spacious tents have a private verandah offering splendid views of the mighty savannah. Comfortably furnished with 1 double or 2 single beds, all safari tents have an ensuite bathroom with 24 hours hot showers, running water for hand-basins and a flushing toilet.

rinnomoe kidepo valley safari lodge

As a budget option, Kidepo Savannah Lodge offers 9 non-self-contained tents. These are comfortably furnished with 2 single or 1 double bed, a bedside table and a power outlet for charging your electrical equipment. The views into the park are vast and magnificent with an occasional herd of elephants or buffaloes passing by. The tents share a communal ablution block with hot showers and flushing toilets. No need to worry about linen as all bedding and towels are provided.

Restaurant & Bar

The thatched dining and bar area offer one of the finest views over the Park. The vistas stretching up to southern Sudan are just breathtaking but so are the starry skies. Away from the lightpollution that comes with civilization, you will be amazed of what is above us. From the wooden deck in front of our restaurant one can often witness the milky way like only National Geographics is able to catch.

Dinners are 4 course meals while during lunch 2 courses are served. Because everything on site runs off solar, including the fridges and freezers, we work with a fixed menu but if you have any dietary requirement we will be happy to cater for your request. Kindly let us know in time.

You are on your holiday so… breakfast, lunch and dinner have flexible times. We will adapt us to your time schedule, nothing too early; nothing too late.

Kidepo Valley National Park is one of those out of the ordinary places in East Africa.  A place as you might imagine Africa would be, but only better. Raw, remote, unspoiled and almost unvisited. The perfect place for your African adventure.

Kidepo Valley National park is located in the northeastern corner of Uganda. It is Uganda’s most isolated national park, but the few who make the long journey north through the wild frontier region of Karamoja would agree that it is also the most magnificent, for Kidepo ranks among Africa’s finest wildernesses.

There is nothing like taking a walk on the wild side. Explore the savannah by foot, accompanied by an armed guide you will venture along dry river beds, over rocky outcrops and through bush land to track the resident wildlife. Lamoj Mountains: Most of the hiking is conducted on Lamoj Mountains only a couple of kilometers from the Headquarters of the Park. This area is in the Narus Valley, a prime game viewing area Kidepo River Valley: Visitors may as well go to see the marvelous Kidepo River Valley. The river is dried out through the biggest part of the year. A stroll on its wide bed of white sand or in the barassus palm forest which feels like an oasis in the sahara, is a fascinating attraction.

A unique insight into the warrior tribe’s way of life. The name Karamojong is derived from a phrase meaning ‘the old men can walk no further’. Originally from Ethiopia, this tribe settled in the north east of Uganda. Related to the Maasai, this is a warrior nomad tribe for who, for generations, pride and status were cattle and for who cattle raids were the rule of the day. Since the disarmament however, things have calmed down. Cattle is still king, but subsistence farming has become a lot more common. A cultural visit to their manyatta, will give you an insight into this fascinating community, its culture and tradition.

The IK people are one of the original tribes and were here long before the Karamojong arrived. Initially they used to occupy areas of the current Kidepo Valley National Park but when their original home was declared a national park they were forced to move northwards to Mount Morungule. This brought extreme famine and the IK people had to adapt new practices and skills to forge their way of survival. They used subsistence farming, hunting and fruit gathering to overcome famine but were continuously raided by neighbours. Today, they are one of the smallest and most marginalized tribe in the country with an estimated total of 10,000 people. There are fears that this tribe might be on the verge to extinction but mere resistance has led to their continuous survival. Today, visitors are availed with an opportunity to visit Ik. This all day venture up and down steep mountains in some of the most stunning scenery, will give you a rare insight in the tribe, adds a bit of income to Ik’s community and helps to create some awareness.

Getting there

A bit of trouble or cost to get there but totally worth it. In the past, tribal warfare, cattle raids and very bad roads, have kept Kidepo Valley National Park isolated and unvisited. Fortunately, today, tables have turned. The park, however, remains a Lost Eden, a place everyone recommends but where few have been.

LODGE LOCATION Being just 500 mt away from Kalokudo gate, the lodge is literally on a stone’s throw from the Park and can be reached without paying park fees.

Latitude:  3.713723° //  Longitude: 33.669861°

BY ROAD The road network in Northern Uganda drastically improved since few years.

The best and most direct route from Kampala passes through Gulu and Kitgum to Lokumoit Gate. Set of early to avoid the Kampala traffic jam and take a packed lunch for this 520 km or 10 hours long journey.

Longer but very rewarding alternative roads pass through Karamoja subregion.

The Lodge is well indicated from Katurum gate (lokumoit gate) onwards.

BY AIR

The easier but more costly option is to fly in by a scheduled or chartered flight. Our open roofed land cruiser can pick you up from Kidepo airport and be used for game drives during your visit

Apoka Lodge

Apoka Lodge is our favorite property in the remote northeastern corner of Uganda, in the Kidepo Valley National Park . Located atop of a picturesque kopje overlooking the Narus River Valley, Apoka is frequented by zebra, waterbuck, warthog, jackals, and buffalo. Kidepo boasts a healthy population of lion and elephant as well, making for exciting game drives and night drives. Birding is also a popular activity at Apoka.

The lodge itself consists of 10 cottages equipped with showers, outdoor baths, and private verandahs. We recommend staying at least 3 nights (if not longer) as it’s a remote location and there are enough activities to keep you well occupied. With a longer stay, you’ll have time to visit the Karamojong villages and take a guided hike in the canyons or on the savannah. There is also a lovely pool and the lodge is a great for just lounging about.

Kidepo Valley National Park Guide

Nestled in the rugged, semi-arid valleys of Karamoja province in northeastern Uganda, Kidepo Valley National Park, spanning a sprawling 1,442 square kilometers, offers visitors a unique and truly immersive safari experience. This isolated park is characterized by its breathtaking savannah landscapes, framed by jagged mountain horizons, and is home to an astonishing array of wildlife and bird species. Despite its remote location, or perhaps because of it, the park provides a natural sanctuary teeming with life, untouched and undisturbed.

Kidepo Valley National Park was officially designated a national park by the Ugandan government in 1962, with the aim of preserving the area’s unique ecosystem and the diverse species it harbors. Prior to its designation as a national park, the area was inhabited by the indigenous Karamojong and Ik people, who practiced pastoralism and small-scale agriculture.

The establishment of the park brought with it increased conservation efforts, including initiatives aimed at protecting and promoting the park’s rich biodiversity and ensuring the continued coexistence of the local communities and wildlife. Despite challenges over the years, including periods of civil unrest and limited infrastructure development, the park has remained a critical conservation area in Uganda and a must-visit destination for nature and wildlife enthusiasts.

Biodiversity

Kidepo Valley National Park is renowned for its remarkable biodiversity. Home to over 80 species of mammals, including elephants, giraffes, cheetahs, leopards, buffalos, and zebras, it also harbors some of the rarest and most sought-after carnivores like the striped hyena, caracal, and aardwolf. Moreover, the park provides shelter to a range of primate species such as baboons and vervet monkeys.

In addition to its rich mammalian diversity, the park is also a haven for bird watchers, boasting over 475 bird species. This makes it the second highest in Uganda in terms of bird species diversity. Some of the notable bird species found here include the Abyssinian Roller, Fox Kestrel, and the Karamoja Apalis.

The park’s geographical terrain is as diverse as its wildlife. It encompasses a blend of acacia woodland, expansive savannah, and montane forests, providing varied habitats for its rich flora and fauna. The two main rivers that cross the park, the Kidepo and Narus, play an important role in the park’s ecosystem. During the dry season, the Narus Valley becomes a critical water source for wildlife.

The park is surrounded by mountain ranges, with the southern boundary defined by the Morungole range reaching heights of 2,750 meters above sea level. The northern boundary, in contrast, is characterized by rugged savannah, dominated by the towering Kidepo Mountain.

Kidepo Valley National Park is located in the northeastern corner of Uganda, bordering South Sudan to the north and Kenya to the east. Despite its remote location, the park is accessible by both road and air. By road, it’s approximately a 10-hour drive from the capital city, Kampala. Alternatively, chartered flights from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield can get you to the park in about 2 hours.

Kidepo Valley National Park is a place of rugged beauty, teeming with a diverse range of wildlife. Its remote and pristine wilderness provides visitors with a chance to witness nature in its raw, unfiltered form. Whether you’re a wildlife enthusiast, a birdwatcher, or simply someone looking to experience the extraordinary landscapes of Africa, Kidepo Valley National Park will undoubtedly leave you enchanted.

A Guide to Reaching Kidepo Valley National Park

Kidepo Valley National Park, although set in the farthest corner of Uganda, is more accessible than you might think. Its remote location is part of its charm, allowing visitors to experience unspoiled nature away from the hustle and bustle of modern civilization. There are two primary ways to reach Kidepo: by road and by air. Each method offers its own unique experience and considerations.

The road journey to Kidepo Valley National Park is an adventure in itself, offering an opportunity to witness the diverse landscapes of Uganda. The park is approximately 700 kilometers from Uganda’s capital city, Kampala. Depending on road conditions and the type of vehicle used, the journey can take between 10 to 12 hours.

There are two main routes from Kampala to Kidepo. The first route takes you through Karuma, Gulu, and Kitgum, while the second route goes through Mbale, Soroti, and Moroto. Both routes have their own unique attractions. The first route is usually faster and traverses past the stunning Karuma Falls on the Victoria Nile. The second route, albeit longer, offers striking views of Mount Elgon and the vast plains of Karamoja.

It’s worth noting that although the majority of the journey is on tarmac roads, the last stretch of about 150 kilometers is on murram roads which can be challenging during the rainy season. It is advisable to use a 4×4 vehicle for this journey and, if possible, hire an experienced local driver familiar with the routes and conditions.

If you’re short on time or prefer to avoid the long drive, flying is an excellent alternative. There are scheduled and chartered flights available from Entebbe International Airport and Kajjansi Airfield near Kampala to Kidepo. The flight duration is approximately 2 hours.

Charter companies such as Aerolink Uganda, Eagle Air, and Fly Uganda operate regular flights to Kidepo. The planes land at Lomej airstrip, located a short 3 kilometers from the park headquarters.

Although more expensive than the road trip, the flight offers a unique aerial view of Uganda’s breathtaking landscapes, and for many, it’s a highlight of the trip.

Once at the park, private vehicle hires, guided tours, and safari drives are readily available to help you navigate the vast landscapes of Kidepo Valley National Park. There are several accommodation options within and near the park, ranging from luxury lodges to budget-friendly campsites, most of which offer transport services within the park.

Whether you choose the scenic drive or the breathtaking flight, reaching Kidepo Valley National Park is part of the adventure. The journey, regardless of how it’s undertaken, leads to an untouched wilderness that offers an authentic, immersive African safari experience like no other.

Entrance/Gate to Access The Mainland of Kidepo

Kidepo Valley National Park, Uganda’s remote wilderness gem, has two primary entrances, each with its own charm and unique offerings for visitors. Each entrance is a gateway to a different experience within the park, from wildlife viewing to cultural immersion.

Katurum Gate

Located on the western side of Kidepo Valley National Park, the Katurum Gate is the main entry point for most visitors. It provides convenient access from the regional towns of Kitgum and Gulu, which are often pit stops for travelers making the long drive from Kampala.

Upon arrival at Katurum Gate, visitors are welcomed by friendly park rangers ready to provide information about the park’s wildlife, bird species, and various activities. From this point, you will enter the heart of the park, which boasts a plethora of game-viewing opportunities, including elephants, lions, cheetahs, giraffes, and a variety of antelope species.

Just a short drive from Katurum Gate, you’ll find the park headquarters and the Apoka Tourism Centre, which is a hub of activity within the park. Here, you can plan your activities, get up-to-date wildlife sighting information, hire local guides, and arrange for accommodations within the park.

Katurum Gate’s location also offers the advantage of close proximity to the Narus Valley – Kidepo’s primary game viewing area. Narus Valley has permanent water sources, making it a magnet for wildlife, especially during the dry season.

Lokutumo Gate

Situated on the northern side of the park, the lesser-known Lokutumo Gate is the gateway to the more remote and less frequented areas of the park. This gate is typically used by visitors coming in from South Sudan or those who have chosen to explore the wild northern sector of the park.

Lokutumo Gate offers direct access to the Kidepo Valley, the second major valley within the park.

This part of Kidepo is generally drier and more arid but equally captivating with its vast savannah landscapes and imposing mountain backdrops. The valley is intersected by the seasonal Kidepo River, which, during the wet season, transforms the valley into a lush, wildlife-rich oasis.

The Kidepo Valley is also home to a number of hot springs, notably the Kanangorok Hot Springs, which are easily accessible from the Lokutumo Gate. The springs offer a unique experience for visitors, with local folklore adding a layer of cultural intrigue to the natural spectacle.

Near the Lokutumo Gate, visitors can also explore the Lomej Hills, perfect for a guided nature walk or hike, offering stunning panoramic views of the park. This gate is also the starting point for cultural visits to the Karamojong communities that live in the northeastern region of the park.

Different Sections of Kidepo Valley National Park

Stretching across 1,442 square kilometers of unspoiled wilderness in the northeastern corner of Uganda, Kidepo Valley National Park is segmented into distinct regions, each offering unique natural features and wildlife experiences. The park is primarily divided into two significant valleys: the Narus Valley and Kidepo Valley, with each area having its unique landscape and biodiversity.

Narus Valley

The Narus Valley is the southern part of the park, renowned as the primary wildlife viewing area. This region is characterized by verdant grasslands and acacia woodland, interspersed with borassus palm trees, creating a picturesque African savannah landscape.

The lifeblood of Narus Valley is the Narus River, a seasonal river whose banks are a critical source of water, attracting a high concentration of wildlife, particularly in the dry season. It is not uncommon to spot herds of elephants, buffalos, and antelopes quenching their thirst, while predators like lions and cheetahs take advantage of the guaranteed prey availability.

The Narus Valley is also home to the park’s primary tourist facilities, including the park headquarters and the Apoka Tourism Centre, situated near the Katurum Gate. Several game drive routes traverse the valley, offering excellent wildlife viewing opportunities.

Kidepo Valley

Located on the northeastern boundary of the park, the Kidepo Valley presents a contrasting landscape to the Narus Valley. This part of the park is characterized by semi-arid plains intersected by the sandy Kidepo River. Despite its arid nature, the valley is dotted with unique vegetation, including sausage trees and desert date trees, providing a fascinating spectacle.

Kidepo Valley is also known for its hot springs, namely Kanangorok Hot Springs, which are a popular spot among visitors. The sight of the springs with the backdrop of the Morungole range offers a captivating panorama. The area is also an excellent bird-watching spot with species not found elsewhere in the park.

Morungole Mountain Range

Defining the park’s southern boundary, the Morungole Mountain Range is an integral part of Kidepo. Rising to heights of 2,750 meters, this montane landscape offers a refreshing contrast to the plains. The slopes are home to the Ik people, one of the smallest ethnic groups in Uganda. A hike up the mountains not only offers scenic views but also a chance to interact with the Ik community and learn about their unique culture and traditional ways of life.

Karamoja Plains

Surrounding the park to the east is the expansive Karamoja Plains. Although technically outside the park’s boundaries, they form an essential part of the broader ecosystem. The plains are home to the Karamojong people, known for their pastoralist lifestyle. Wildlife often spills over to these plains from the park, particularly during the rainy season when the Kidepo and Narus rivers flood.

Lomej Hills

To the north of the park, near the Lokutumo Gate, the Lomej Hills rise majestically, offering another dimension to Kidepo’s diverse topography. A guided hike to these hills provides a rewarding bird-watching experience and the chance to spot some of the park’s smaller mammal species.

Each section of Kidepo Valley National Park offers unique experiences, diverse landscapes, and an array of wildlife. The Narus Valley’s abundant game life, Kidepo Valley’s arid beauty, the cultural significance of the Morungole Mountains, the stunning vistas of the Lomej Hills, and the vastness of the Karamoja Plains all combine to offer visitors an unforgettable safari experience. The park’s biodiversity and stunning natural beauty make it a must-visit destination for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.

Best Times to Explore Kidepo Valley National Park

Choosing the best time to visit Kidepo Valley National Park in Uganda depends largely on what you’re hoping to see and experience during your safari adventure. As with many African wildlife destinations, Kidepo’s climate can broadly be divided into the dry season and the wet season, each offering unique experiences and considerations.

Dry Season (September to March)

The dry season is generally considered the best time to visit Kidepo Valley National Park for wildlife viewing. As the park becomes arid, particularly from November to February, animals congregate around the few remaining water sources, making them easier to spot. The Narus Valley, with its perennial water supply, becomes a hub of activity, attracting a wide array of animals from elephants to lions, giraffes, and various antelope species.

The dry season also offers the best conditions for game drives. The roads are easier to navigate, and the thin vegetation improves visibility, allowing for excellent photographic opportunities. Additionally, the risk of malaria is lower during the dry months, contributing to a more comfortable and worry-free safari experience.

Wet Season (April to August)

The wet season in Kidepo Valley National Park comes with its own set of advantages and attractions. The park transforms into a lush, green paradise, offering stunning landscapes. The wet season is also the calving period for

While the dry season is typically the best time for wildlife viewing, Kidepo Valley National Park offers worthwhile experiences all year round. The park’s diverse landscapes, abundant wildlife, and cultural offerings remain accessible irrespective of the season.

If you’re looking to combine wildlife viewing with cultural experiences, any time of the year is suitable. The indigenous Karamojong and Ik communities offer fascinating cultural interactions throughout the year.

Lastly, the best time to visit also depends on your preference for safari crowd sizes. The dry season attracts more visitors, so for a more secluded experience, the wet season might be the best choice.

Whether you choose to visit in the dry or wet season, Kidepo Valley National Park offers an unforgettable experience. It’s always advisable to check with travel experts or tour operators about the specific conditions expected during your travel period to plan your visit accordingly. Regardless of when you choose to explore this remarkable park, Kidepo’s allure is ever-present and ready to be discovered.

ABOUT THE PARK

The park contains two rivers – Kidepo and Narus – which disappear in the dry season, leaving just pools for the wildlife.

The local communities around the park include pastoral Karamojong people, similar to the Maasai of Kenya, and the IK, a hunter-gatherer tribe whose survival is threatened.

Kidepo Valley National Park lies in the rugged, semi arid valleys between Uganda’s borders with south Sudan in the north west and only 5km from the eastern border of Kenya, some 700km from Kampala. Gazetted as a national park in 1962, it has a profusion of big game and hosts over 77 mammal species.

Kidepo is Uganda’s most isolated national park, but the few who make the long journey north through the wild frontier region of Karamoja would agree that it is also the most magnificent, for Kidepo ranks among Africa’s finest wildernesses. From Apoka, in the heart of the park, a savannah landscape extends far beyond the gazetted area, towards horizons outlined by distant mountain ranges.

During the dry season, the only permanent water in the park is found in wetlands and remnant pools in the broad Narus Valley near Apoka. These seasonal oases, combined with the open, savannah terrain, make the Narus Valley the park’s prime game viewing location especially with its dense populations of Lion,Buffalos,Elephant and many similar angulates.

Kidepo’s elephant population has surged from around 200 in the mid 1990’s to between 650 and 1000 today. The African Buffalo population is now estimated at 10,000-15,000.The Rothschild Giraffe is very notable ,breeding more than 50 individuals from the bottleneck of the mid 1990’s population of three and supplemented  several from translocation.

The bird checklist of over 476 species with the common Ostrich, secretary bird, northern carmine bee eater, little green bee eater, Abyssinian scimitar bill and many more colorful and visible species.

HOW TO GET TO THE PARK?

The best way to get to Kidepo Valley NP is by a scheduled or chartered flight.

It is also possible to drive to Kidepo. There are several routes. The most direct route, through Gulu to Lokumoit Gate, takes about 10 hours. The trip can be broken up with an overnight stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, Gulu or Kitgum. Two longer routes pass through the remote Karamoja subregion, arriving at Nataba Gate. Karamoja was subject to banditry in the past, but it has been considered safe for several years and is a growing center of community-based tourism focused on the small town of Moroto.

Flights between parks are usually scheduled by your tour operator. They will also arrange for your pick-up from the airport or your hotel in most cases. You will enter Uganda by way of  Entebbe International Airport (EBB) , which is near the town of Entebbe and 46km/29mi from Kampala, Uganda’s capital.

Kidepo Valley National Park is in northeast Uganda . It covers 1436 km² and borders onto South Sudan . Less discovered by tourists, Kidepo Valley protects unique flora and fauna that is quite different from other Ugandan national parks.

Understand [ edit ]

The park contains unusual, not often sighted predators such as the aardwolf, bat-eared fox, caracal, cheetah, hunting dog and striped hyena. the park also contains the usual plains animals such as lions, leopards, giraffe and other common herbivores. Small cats are also found within the park.

Before the area was gazetted as a national park, there lived the Dodoth pastoralist and Ik people who used their own land communally for keeping cattle, farming, and at the same time their hunting grounds. Later, the area was gazetted as a game reserve (Kidepo valley Game reserve) by the British colonial government in 1958. This was to aim to protect and conserve the animal life from hunters and control tsetse flies in the area. In 1962, the newly independent government of Uganda under the late Milton Obote declared Kidepo valley game reserve a national park to become the present-day Kidepo Valley National Park. The first chief warden of the national park was Ian Ross who was later replaced in 1972 by Paul Ssali.

Kidepo is remote area with little infrastructure and many hazards. Roads are poor - many routes may have sand, mud, washboards, stream crossings and deep ruts that require vehicles with 4-wheel drive and or significant ground clearance. During the rainy season expert off-road driving skills are required to navigate the deep, slick "black cotton" mud of all but the main tracks. Localized heavy tsetse infestations make closed vehicles with sealable windows preferable.

Driving off-track is prohibited and hazardous. Driving anywhere North of the reintroduction boma, including into the Kidepo valley, requires a ranger escort.

The presence of dangerous game dictates that most travel within the park is by vehicle. Walking tours are possible with an armed ranger escort. Escorts can be arranged through the lodges or UWA offices.

wildlife safaris in Kidepo Valley National Park

Wildlife Safaris in Kidepo Valley National Park

Kidepo Valley National Park is blessed by one annual wet season. If you visit the park during the long hot, dry season, you'll find the most consistent game viewing in the south of the park , in Narus Valley. During the hot, dry season, animals migrate south from the semi-arid Kidepo Valley to find greenery in the swamps and residue pools along the seasonal Narus channel. Game viewing in this region is richly rewarding.

The best game tracks in Kidepo include the Kakine, Katurum, and Nagusokopire game circuits , which meander around the Narus Valley, allowing tourists to explore the wildlife-rich areas of the valley. Kidepo Valley tracks are less rewarding than the Narus, but the Kidepo River is worth visiting.

The Kidepo River is a mysterious beauty fashioned with a seductive Borassus palm forest worth a drive-through. Here, you may see dry country species like the jackal, ostrich, secretary bird, and kudu. The river is completely dry most of the year, with a fifty-meter-wide course and a swathe of white sand.

About 18 mi north of Apoka on the Sudanese border, the Kanatarok hot springs are a common attraction among visitors. Although the low-key springs are worth visiting, they don't compare with the hot springs in Semliki National Park in western Uganda.

Best Time To Visit Kidepo Valley National Park cheetahs and big cats

Best Time To Visit Kidepo Valley

The best time to visit Kidepo Valley National Park is immediately after the rainy season in September, October, and November and through the long dry season from December to April . Kidepo has one rainy season between March and April and does not share the same weather conditions as the rest of Uganda; therefore, you'll likely find very few visitors any time of the year.

Uganda has two peak travel periods falling between December to February and June to August. If you're visiting Uganda during the peak season, the best time to add Kidepo to your Uganda safari would be during the driest months between December to February.

However, the seasons of April and August offer a mixture of dry and wet periods with a moderate number of visitors to Kidepo. Although spotting animals may be easier in the dry season, you'll still see a decent number of animals during these months.

Also, it's the best time for birding—easy to spot migratory birds. The wet season offers lush, green scenery and crisp air. Otherwise, the dry periods are very dusty on the game tracks.

Ike people - Immersive Cultural Encounters Around Kidepo Valley National Park

Immersive Cultural Encounters Around Kidepo Valley National Park

Uganda's northeast is home to two minor ethnic groups in Africa: the Ik and the Karamojong nomadic pastoralists , whose obsessive love for cattle rivals the Maasai in Tanzania and Kenya .

The Karamojong community is divided into six groups, each with its own dialect of the Nilotic Karamoja language. Two of these groups, the Napore and Nyangia, have forsaken mainly their traditional ways for an agriculture-based lifestyle, while a third, the Tueso, are hunter-gatherers who have moved from the dry plains into the mountains.

Don't miss the opportunity to explore the Karimojong clan villages within Kidepo Valley National Park, where you can witness fascinating cultural practices infused with dance and folklore. A short stopover at Nakapelimoru, the largest traditional village in East Africa, on the way from Moroto to Kidepo, provides a glimpse into the living culture and an opportunity to visit the largest cattle auction market in the region.

Nearby, the Ik people, with a population of about 10,000 people, struggles to preserve their unique culture and language. Hiking into the Morungole Mountains reveals the semi-arid valleys where Ik villages sprout like mushrooms. This remote community of subsistence farmers has kept to their traditional way of life, only traveling to the lowlands to trade grain.

So why not immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of Kidepo Valley National Park and discover the unique traditions and practices of the local communities? It's an experience that will stay with you long after you return home from your African adventure.
