Modifying cars is a hobby and lifestyle that provides owners with an opportunity to improve and personalize their vehicles. While modifications can be fun, there is no doubt that some mods can sacrifice a car’s reliability; a risk which many enthusiasts choose to accept.

Some are fortunate enough to have a designated daily driver, but many enthusiasts only have one vehicle and rely upon it for everything from commuting to track days to road trips to Grandma’s. Unless you truly lack faith in your car’s reliability, it is important to remember that extensive highway miles and long operating hours are generally less strenuous on an engine than short drives and hard launches. There is no reason why a modified car cannot be trusted on a long journey.

The following are my top ten suggestions for preparing a modified car for a road trip.

Avoid turning wrenches within one week of departure.  A lot can go into preparing a modified car for a road trip. Perhaps you need to flash a more versatile tune, maybe it is time to rotate the tires, or maybe you simply procrastinated with installing those last few parts. Do not make your road trip the maiden voyage on an untested vehicle. Budget your time to complete your car to-do list at least one week prior to departure, providing sufficient time to break in new parts and ensure there are no problems.

Drive before you leave.  Have you ever wondered why a daily driven car so often proves to be more reliable than a similar car that is reserved for the weekends? No, I am not comparing a Honda Accord daily to a once-a-month driven Porsche 911. I am comparing a tuner Miata daily versus a tuner Miata weekend toy.

Vehicles that are used frequently have fluids flowing, bearings turning, and suspensions compressing. They are not sitting, rotting, and seizing up. Therefore, you should drive your car in the days leading up to departure to ready it for the road and test for potential problems.

Chuck your lug nuts/bolts torque.  It should not matter if you just came from a trusted tire shop or you personally rotated your tires last week, always check your lug torque before you depart on a road trip.

Checking wheel lugs should be a routine habit in daily life. I would strongly encourage bringing a torque wrench with you to not only check your lugs at rest stops, but also be prepared for an emergency wheel change.

Inspect tire tread, condition, and air pressure.  Similar to lug nuts, checking your tires’ air pressure and wear should be a routine habit. Make sure your tires are properly inflated, especially before adding an extensive number of miles. Check that there are no punctures, dry rot, or damage to the tires that may become problematic on the highway. Lastly, measure the remaining tread life of your tires and consider how many more miles they are about to endure. Will you be driving through rain or snow? Are your tires equipped for those conditions?

Do not forget about the spare! If you have the resources and cargo space, bringing a full size wheel in lieu of the factory donut may be a better option.

Pack tools, parts, and an OBDII scanner.  You pack snacks and clothes for yourself. Why not do the same for your car?

It is always advisable to travel with a few tools. You will not need your entire tool arsenal, just the basics should suffice in an emergency breakdown situation. I like to pack a small ratchet set, a few adjustable wrenches, a rubber mallet, a torque wrench, a jack, and an adjustable screwdriver with varying bits.

I also suggest packing some miscellaneous parts: Zip ties, duct tape, some spare hoses, hose clamps, electrical wire, light bulbs, fuses, and string. Even if your car is perfect and has never required an emergency fix, rough roads, varying weather and climate conditions, and changes in elevation can stress your car in new ways. Carrying a few resources could help you Mcguyver your way out of trouble.

Lastly, pack a portable OBDII scan tool. You can find a dongle to pair with a phone app for as cheap as $10. While this might not give you detailed code readings, it can at least help you decipher the difference between an inconvenient engine light or a serious problem.

Top off fluids.  A week before your trip, top off all of your vehicle’s fluids: oil, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, washer fluid, etc. Check the level of these fluids the day before departure and top off any if necessary.

Pack any additional fluids that you know your car might need. Does it burn oil? Bring more. Are you traveling to a performance driving event? Bring some brake fluid and coolant. Also consider packing some distilled water for your trip. Not only can this be an emergency supply of drinking water, but it can also be used as coolant without risking mineral buildup in your engine.

Check and test your wipers.  Depending on where you are traveling, you may need to be prepared for extensive rain and snow. Make sure your front and rear wipers are ready for use.

Wash your car. You read that right, wash your car BEFORE you leave.

When you are about to travel hundreds or thousands of miles, things are going to get dirty. Washing your car before you leave, and possibly applying some polish or wax, will help protect the paint from this inevitable dirt and make it easier to hose off once you return home.

Familiarize yourself with local laws.  When traveling across country or state boards, be certain to familiarize yourself with local laws.

Virginia does not allow radar detectors; a costly ticket that I paid for within one mile of entering the state. Oregon and New Jersey do not allow you to pump your own fuel. Georgia is a hands free state; you can even be fined if a mobile device is sitting loose on a passenger seat or cupholder.

Maryland is especially strict on camber and ride height laws. Are you traveling with a firearm? Some states require weapons to be unloaded and/or out of reach from the driver’s seat.

Be prepared that state troopers may pull you over for local violations of tint, exhaust decibels, or lacking a front license plate, regardless of your home-state laws. You cannot be ticketed for something that is actually legal where your car is registered, but do not give law enforcement another reason to write you up. Know the laws for where you are traveling and always be respectful in the event that you are pulled over.

Consider a rental car.  As devastating as not driving your personal car may be, consider when a rental car might be the wiser decision. You know your car and its limitations, do not take risks.

Does your vehicle require premium fuel or E85? Availability at your destination could be scarce.

Are you running R compound tires? Is your engine a gas guzzler? Does your transmission gear ratio cruise at high RPMs? Compute the per-mile operating cost of your personal car. You may discover that renting a car could be the cheaper method of travel.

Of course, even rental cars should be run through a checklist prior to departure. Complete a full walkaround with the rental car personnel before leaving and be certain to check for loose body panels or low fluids that may cause problems.

Road trip issues can often be unavoidable, but taking a few simple precautions will make you better prepared. Stay safe, drive alert, and enjoy the journey on the open road.

Just bought a 23 KLR 650 Adventure. What are your essential mods?

Hey y'all, just got a 23! I'm planning on taking it on a cross country trip pretty much right after the break in. So far the below is my list of mods I'm purchasing, wanted to see what anyone else would recommend as well! I have no plans on getting any performance mods for the bike, I've got other bikes if I want to go fast. Doohickey mod Quadlock mount some type of new set, recommendations welcome! 16t sprocket Rear lowering links Top luggage case  

Low profile oil drain plug. Skid plate. Lubrication of steering stem bearing, suspension bearings and bolts.  

Good to know. I'll add low profile drain plug to the list. Skid plate is in the plans but probably not until after the trip unfortunately

Cozy my man, you got a ‘23. Just fill it up and ride it as is, enjoy the ride, weather and scenery. You can deal with all those farkles/mods later, as you like. Just enjoy the bike stock for now, its new enough to take you anywhere you want and back. Those japs didn’t sell you a lemon.  

If you plan to do much trail/off road then I would suggest soft luggage. Your ankles and lower legs will thank you if you get pinned between luggage and the side of a deep rut. That happened to a buddy on a trip recently. If you can get the fork brace in time for the first trip, I hear it helps with the KLR’s road manners at higher speeds. It’s next on my list after the skid plate.  

I wouldn't do any mod that voids your warranty. I would just ride it as is. Cosmetic and compfort changes sure. Crash bars coupled with skid plate were first on my list.  

I'll second taking it on your trip as is mechanically. Your trip will give you plenty of time to figure out what is truly needed and not merely wanted. If your warranty means anything to you, I would not crack that motor open. If something internal fails, it's on Kawasaki to make it right.  

I just got the same bike. I have a clip on windshield spoiler and a phone mount. I have heated grips and a thermo-bob with tach and coolant guage. I'll likely order a 14 and 16 tooth front pulley as well. But the stock gearing is a pretty good medium. The windshield spoiler is a must for me. Even with the windshield in the higher slot it send the air directly at my nose/mouth area. Lol . Im 6 foot 2 ish. I could stand up or duck 5 inches and it was reasonably quiet but sitting normal it was loud .

You should be fine to go as-is. If you know it will not include off-road, and lots of highway, I would consider putting a 16T front sprocket on it. That will make the highway cruising easier.  

+1 for just riding it as is. If you enjoy doing the mods, then go for it, but these bikes are ready to go as is. All you need is a bungie to strap on some gear. I went classy with 2 bungies and a milk crate, but even that was a bit excessive on the wallet for what was actually needed. I'd take every second I can to ride and not mod the bike. I just love to ride.  

Solid mounted foot pegs. Those factory ones are downright dangerous for mounting/dismounting bike, especially when wet.  

My bike has some improvements. I don't consider any of them to be Essential Modifications! Essentially my bike only needs normal maintenance and wear able items. Oil, gas, tires, chains, sprockets and Go.  

+1 on ride more worry less  

To some people the worrying is most of the fun. I had buddies that would buy a super sportbike and swap out plastics with carbon fiber, fuel caps, tag mount deletes, integrated signals, seat covers, tank stickers.... etc etc etc. And never really ride. Same for their cars. Driving trucks sitting on 44 inch swampers but would park a mile away to avoid getting on gravel. Lol.

Road tripping around Iceland: A summer adventure in the land of fire and ice

Midnight sun, thundering waterfalls and awe-inspiring scenery await on the wild and rugged island.

Sailing through thousand-year-old icebergs, scuba diving between tectonic plates and hiking volcanoes are everyday activities in Iceland. Home to more than 260 glaciers and 130 volcanoes, the untamed Nordic nation holds surprises around almost every corner.

Since shooting to pop-culture fame as the backdrop for much of the hit HBO series Game of Thrones , the country has become inundated with winter visitors who marvel at its northern lights and spectacular snow-capped mountains. But, since winter also brings minus temperatures and only five hours of daylight, sightseeing opportunities are limited.

That is why I decided to make a summer visit instead. Opting to tackle the country on a spectacular road trip around Highway 1, I made light work of the country's 1,200km ring road, completing it in just one week thanks to 20 hours of daylight. From galloping horses, vast glaciers and thundering waterfalls to awe-inspiring landscapes, there is no shortage of places to go and see when exploring Iceland at a time of year when the sun barely sets.

48 hours in Reykjavik

The obvious starting point for any road trip is Reykjavik, Iceland's capital, although it feels more like a fishing village than a bustling commercial hub. A few days here gives me plenty of time to explore its charming colourful wooden houses, the austere concrete Hallgrimskirkja church, and the Icelandic nature-inspired exhibitions of the Perlan museum, which also has a rooftop restaurant with epic views.

Best of the Golden Circle

Taking roughly three hours, the Golden Circle is a spectacular drive that encompasses exploding 30-metre-tall geysers, stunning blue crater lakes and the incredible wonders of Thingvellir National Park, the only place in the world where you can walk (and scuba dive) between two tectonic plates.

Even on a cold day, stopping for a home-made treat at the Efstidalur Farm ice cream barn seems like a good idea. The rustic cafe is also a farm and hotel and has a genuine country vibe. Huge wide windows in the cafe allow visitors to gaze in on the very cows that the ice cream comes from.

I save the best for last, the formidable Gullfoss waterfall is the star of this part of the trip. Dramatic, powerful and slightly terrifying, I hear its deafening roar well before I see it.

Escaping the world in Siglufjorour

Most of the Netflix thriller series Trapped was filmed in Siglufjorour, so the fishing town in northern Iceland might feel familiar to anyone that's seen the show.

In winter the destination is largely cut off from the rest of the country by snowdrifts, but in summer it is reachable via a picturesque three-hour detour from the ring road. With green mountains and fields of purple lupin flowers on one side, and the wild ocean on the other, it is a quintessential idyllic coastal village.

The Herring Era Museum is the top attraction in town and also a great place to while away an hour or two enjoying a cold drink and an Icelandic rye bread sandwich as I look out over the boats and the paintbox harbour buildings.

Majesty of Studlagil canyon

Found in the most remote corner of western Iceland, Studlagil is a place visited by only the most intrepid travellers. There's not a shop for miles around here, so I pack snacks and fill up on petrol beforehand.

Part of Jokuldalur Glacier Valley, the canyon is a few kilometres down a narrow farm track and is home to the largest number of basalt rock columns in the country. It also has a vibrant blue-green river, which I tower over on a suspended mesh-bottomed platform for a better view. A meander along the bottom of the canyon is an equally impressive way to view the beauty spot.

Sailing around Jokulsarlon glacier lake

An icy expanse littered with floating icebergs and bobbing seals, Jokulsarlon is a large glacial lake and one of the most mesmerising sites in Iceland. Just across the road is Diamond Beach, so named because of the huge ice chunks that congregate on its black sands, and named by Banana Boat as one of the world’s most beautiful beaches . Marking the point where Jokulsarlon meets the dark and choppy sea, the otherworldly landmark seems almost unreal.

Venturing to the Westman Islands

The Westman Islands, or Vestmannaeyjar, are almost completely uninhabited and most tourists miss them off their itinerary altogether. But it is summer, I have time to venture over and the waters are calmer than in winter. A majestic group of rocky outcrops and soaring cliffs, the islands are home to the largest Atlantic puffin colony in the world.

Heimaey, the biggest island in the archipelago, is a 40-minute ferry ride from the mainland. Pufflings can be spotted from its cliff top footpaths in August and September and a tour of the world’s first beluga whale sanctuary is on offer here. It is home to two white whales that were rescued from a Chinese theme park and starred in the UK TV show John Bishop’s Great Whale Rescue .

With lots of cosy pubs and puffin-themed shops and cafes to explore, the island makes for a great day trip for nature lovers. Golfers will also be impressed by the unique layout and scenery of the 18-hole course inside the Herjolfsdalur valley, which is like no other course in the world.

Natural hot springs and casual bites

About 90 per cent of Iceland’s hot water is heated by geothermal sources. Littered with hot springs, the most famous is the Blue Lagoon. A striking azure pool surrounded by black volcanic rock, the surreal experience has swim up bars and a natural face mask station. Tickets start at Dh350 ($95) and need to be booked in advance.

Sky Lagoon offers a more serene and less crowded experience, while Reykjadalur thermal river, found up in the mountains about an hour south of Reykjavik, allows me to sink into nature. It is at the top of a picturesque, 3km climb. The lack of changing rooms might concern luxury travellers, but for hardy Icelanders and adventure seekers it is all part of the challenge.

Lying on the warm, stony stream bed with dozens of other hikers is one of my favourite Iceland moments. Afterwards, I enjoy a cheese toastie from the car park cafe. It turns out that, eating out in a country that is often thought of as expensive doesn't have to be ludicrously so. It's all about keeping it casual.

Icelanders love hot dogs and, while the Bill Clinton-approved Baejarins Beztu in Reykjavik are something of a rite of passage for every visitor, even the ones I find at the petrol station are surprisingly good. The country is also renowned for its fishing industry, so fish and chips are available in every village.

A wild and rugged break from the ordinary, Iceland is every bit the summer adventure that I'd been dreaming of.
