Two Dudes, One Car

A review of the road-trip comedy due date, with optional spoilers..

Due Date (Warner Bros.) is a movie that’s been made countless times before, from It Happened One Night to Planes, Trains and Automobiles to The Sure Thing : a pair of completely dissimilar people, forced by circumstance to travel a long distance in one another’s company, get in and out of a series of comic scrapes before falling in love. Or becoming the best of friends, which, by the homosocial logic of the buddy comedy, amounts to the same thing. It’s not that a reworking of this familiar material couldn’t be made funny again, but it would take a lot more imagination than this movie, directed by dude-comedy auteur Todd Phillips ( Road Trip , Old School , The Hangover ), seems willing to put in.

The chemistry between these two mismatched leads, played by Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis, seems inspired by the relationship between Steve Martin and John Candy in the classic Planes, Trains and Automobiles (which, if you haven’t seen already, you should rent sometime before Thanksgiving). Downey’s character, Peter Highman, is a Type-A architect trying to get from Atlanta to L.A. in time for his wife’s (Michelle Monaghan) scheduled C-section. Galifianakis plays Ethan Tremblay, an aspiring actor with a perm, a French bulldog, a coffee can containing his dead father’s ashes, and a lot of irritating mannerisms. (As a character, Ethan doesn’t make a lot of sense; one minute he’s a fat stoner slob in the Old School mode, the next minute he’s almost like a mincing gay stereotype, though his sexual valence is never quite clear.)

After these two strangers board the same plane, Ethan manages to get them both kicked off—and placed on a no-fly list—by loudly discussing bombs within earshot of the flight crew. Peter, with his wallet and all his I.D. left behind on the plane, is forced to rely on Ethan to rent a car and make the trip cross-country. And then they make excellent time, arrive safely, and part with a firm handshake, the end. Kidding!

Of course our heroes encounter obstacles (a car crash, a declined credit card, a wrong turn that takes them over the Mexican border) and oddball characters (a spacey pot dealer played by Juliette Lewis, a paraplegic Western Union employee played by Danny McBride). Of course they get on each other’s last nerves, with Peter at one point abandoning Ethan at a rest stop in the middle of nowhere. And of course the tightly wound Peter gradually learns to let his guard down, and the scattered, narcissistic Ethan begins to get at least an inkling of how incredibly annoying he is to be around.

But that’s the thing: Neither of the two main characters in Due Date really changes, or changes in an emotionally plausible enough way, to hit the heartwarming note Phillips seems to be aiming for. I’ve written before about the remorse deficit in recent buddy comedies. In Superbad , Drillbit Taylor , Hot Tub Time Machine and other films about male friendship, there’s been a tendency for protagonists to treat each other truly shittily, in ways that a real-life friendship might never recover from, then forgive each other far too easily just in time for a jerry-rigged happy ending.

A few scenes before the end of Due Date , as the two men peer down into the gulf of the Grand Canyon, it’s revealed that Ethan did something really terrible to Peter near the beginning of the movie and has been lying about it ever since. (Spoiler: Place your mouse here if you want to know what Ethan said.)   If a real-life friend—especially one you’d known for 36 hours and trusted for about 12—did something like this to you, you’d not only end the friendship then and there but fight the urge to push him off the cliff. Instead, after a brief outburst, Peter swallows his anger, invites Ethan back into the car, and never mentions the infraction again. We’re supposed to accept this as a generous gesture of friendship, but it reads as a pure narrative contrivance. If the goodwill that’s developed between the two men isn’t contingent upon some basic code of ethics (that Ethan has violated), why should we believe in or care about their friendship?

Phillips, who’s always enjoyed pushing gross-out taboos just to the R-rating point, tries to wring laughs from the following situations: masturbating while sitting a few feet away from a stranger in a parked car; spitting on someone else’s dog; spitting on a glass partition that separates you from an office clerk; watching a dog masturbate. Basically, as many situations as possible that combine spitting, masturbation, and dogs, plus a moment when one man throws up on another’s gunshot wound. But the most offensive bodily fluid being hurled around in Due Date are the tears that Phillips dishonestly tries to wrest from the audience’s eyes.

Special Features

Due date: action mash-up, due date: too many questions, the complete “two and a half men” scene, deleted scenes, rotten tomatoes® score.

Due Date is a big step down, like fall-down-an-escalator down.

Like most of Phillips’ comedies, the movie’s half-life is brief, leaving the viewer only temporarily diverted until the moment it’s over.

…Due Date isn’t a particularly substantial film, but top talent in front of the camera make it watchable middlebrow fare…

The hangover from The Hangover...

The dialogue is essentially the most original and entertaining aspect of the adventure.

Downey feels like he's digging out from the bottom of a well and never quite able to reach the surface of Peter's humanity.

You know what's funny? Masturbating dogs. Masturbating dogs are funny. At least the folks behind "Due Date" think so.

There are a few laugh-out-loud lines, but the situations prompt more curiosity about what will happen and/or how they'll get out of it than actual amusement.

A fairly unoriginal movie which exasperates any opportunities for comedy, with the end results being run of the mill and slightly contrived.

Oscar-nominated actor Robert Downey Jr. usually has a knack for picking good movies. But Due Date is not one of them.

Due Date is a 2010 American comedy film directed by Todd Phillips and starring Robert Downey Jr., Zach Galifianakis, and Michelle Monaghan. The film follows the story of Peter Highman (Downey Jr.), an architect who is trying to get back to Los Angeles from Atlanta to be present for the birth of his first child. However, when he is mistakenly placed on the "no-fly" list, he is forced to take a road trip with a slightly off-kilter, aspiring actor named Ethan Tremblay (Galifianakis). The movie is a classic buddy comedy that explores themes of friendship, loyalty, and perseverance.

The story begins with Peter Highman, an uptight architect who is in Atlanta to meet with a client. He just wants to finish his business and get back home to his pregnant wife, Sarah, but things take a drastic turn when he has a chance encounter with Ethan, a wannabe actor, at the airport. Ethan causes a commotion and both men are kicked off the plane, which results in Peter getting placed on the "no-fly" list. With no other options to get back to Los Angeles for the birth of his child, Peter is forced to take a cross-country road trip with Ethan.

The two men could not be more different. Peter is anxious, organized, and in control of his life, while Ethan is eccentric, careless, and unpredictable. These differences are the source of many conflicts and comedic moments along the way. Ethan's antics, such as accidentally purchasing a dog from a gas station, refusing to take his medication, and befriending a drug dealer, lead to many wacky adventures on their journey. Despite their differences and arguments, they both learn to bond over their shared experiences and form an unlikely friendship.

Along the way, Peter and Ethan meet a variety of characters that add to the overall hilarity of the movie. These characters include Sarah's ex-boyfriend (Jamie Foxx), who makes a brief but memorable appearance, and a marijuana-smoking, aspiring Hollywood actor (Danny McBride). They also come across a number of obstacles, such as getting their rental car impounded and getting stuck in the desert, which further tests the strength of their relationship.

As the two men make their way across the country, they also confront their own personal demons. Peter is struggling with impending fatherhood and a strained relationship with his own father, while Ethan is dealing with the loss of his father and his own disappointment in his acting career. These issues come to a head during a climactic moment when the two men finally make it to Los Angeles.

Due Date is a road trip comedy that stands out due to the strength of its cast. Robert Downey Jr. delivers a solid performance as the straight man to Zach Galifianakis' over-the-top characterization of Ethan. The two actors have great chemistry together and play off of each other's strengths throughout the film. Michelle Monaghan, in a relatively small role as Sarah, also adds a good amount of emotional weight to the story. The movie is directed by Todd Phillips, who also directed The Hangover, and it shares similarities in its humor and pacing.

Overall, Due Date is a lighthearted and entertaining comedy that delivers plenty of laughs. While it may not be the most original story, the chemistry between Downey Jr. and Galifianakis, along with the talented supporting cast, make it worth watching. The movie is a perfect pick for a night in with friends, with its mix of humor and heartwarming moments.

Due Date is a 2010 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 35 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.5 and a MetaScore of 51.

“Is this going to be in theaters?”  Zach Galifianakis finds out the answer is “no” in a meta moment in the first trailer for  Between Two Ferns : The Movie , which Netflix released Tuesday.

Based on what began as a popular Funny or Die web series, the film follows Between Two Ferns host Galifianakis (playing a character created by the actor) and his oddball crew as they take a road trip to complete a series of high-profile celebrity interviews to save his and the talk show’s reputation after a near-death experience on set with Matthew McConaughey.

At the orders of Funny or Die co-founder Will Ferrell, Galifianakis sets out on a road trip to nab 10 more episodes. The synopsis from Netflix says Galifianakis dreamed of becoming a star. But when Ferrell discovered his public access TV show Between Two Ferns and uploaded it to Funny or Die, he became a viral laughing stock. The McConaughey mishap, it seems, creates even more tension between the pair.

Led by Galifianakis, the sprawling cast of stars who make cameos as heightened versions of themselves includes Ferrell, Peter Dinklage, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Rudd, Tiffany Haddish, Brie Larson, Keanu Reeves, Jon Hamm, David Letterman, Jason Schwartzman, Adam Scott, John Cho, Chance the Rapper, Rashida Jones, Hailee Steinfeld, John Legend, Chrissy Teigen and Tessa Thompson.

The trailer opens with Galifianakis interviewing McConaughey, whose name is spelled as “McConnogay” in the lower thirds. The interviewer asks McConaughey how surprised he was to win an Oscar for acting before McConaughey points out that there is a leak in the ceiling. Galifianakis tries to fix the leak, but instead sets off the fire alarm and sprinklers. The room soon becomes flooded with water, which causes the actor to nearly drown.

Ferrell, who accuses Galifianakis of temporarily killing McConaughey, tells him that the only way to save his reputation is to travel around the country and interview a number of reputable stars. Following Ferrell’s suggestion, Galifianakis asks if he can help him get the show on network television. “I’m a white man and I’m straight,” he says. “I deserve it.”

The trailer continues with clips of Galifianakis’ interviews, including him mispronouncing Cumberbatch’s name and asking Larson how old she was when she had her first period. The interviewer and his crew get into unusual situations on their road trip, including a car accident and being taken out by a flood in a hallway.

Lauren Lapkus, Ryan Gaul and Jiavani Linayo star along with Galifianakis, who co-wrote the script with director Scott Aukerman. Aukerman, Galifianakis, and Funny or Die’s Mike Farah and Caitlin Daley produce.

Between Two Ferns: The Movie  will debut on Netflix on Sept. 20.

Parents need to know that this odd-couple roadtrip comedy from the director of The Hangover -- which stars Hangover break-out Zach Galifianakis -- isn't as raunchy as its predecessor but comes from the same irreverent, test-the-boundaries school of humor. Expect plenty of swearing (including "f--k" and …

Positive Messages

All of the characters behave badly at times -- and there are plenty of mean-spirited jokes -- but in the end, the two leads find a way to appreciate each other's uniqueness and eccentricities. There's also some exploration of the way that fathers influence sons and how sons can either follow in their father's footsteps or forge their own way.

Though he does undergo a transformation in the end, Peter has a quick temper, which sometimes leads him to lash out verbally and physically. Ethan stretches the truth and is prone to wild mood shifts, but he does have a big heart.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that this odd-couple roadtrip comedy from the director of The Hangover -- which stars Hangover break-out Zach Galifianakis -- isn't as raunchy as its predecessor but comes from the same irreverent, test-the-boundaries school of humor. Expect plenty of swearing (including "f--k" and "s--t"), a somewhat explicit masturbation gag (nothing is shown, but sounds are audible), and a fair helping of mean-spirited jokes. One character uses marijuana (ostensibly to treat his glaucoma), once while driving. In the end, the salty humor comes with a helping of heart, but this is still most age-appropriate for older teens and up. Funny Movie, But Not As Good As Hangover

What's the story.

Wound as tight as a sharp-edged top, Peter Highman ( Robert Downey Jr. ) has a big deadline to make: His wife ( Michelle Monaghan ) is scheduled for a C-section soon. But his scheduled flight home to Los Angeles out of Atlanta, where he's been sent on business, has been scuttled, leaving him and the kooky passenger that he clashed with -- Ethan Tremblay ( Zach Galifianakis ) -- on the no-fly list. With his wallet and ID nowhere to be found and nothing but a BlackBerry to get him cross-country, Peter has no choice but to accept an offer of a ride from Ethan, who's toting around his recently deceased father's ashes in a coffee can. The pair take to the road, with very mixed -- and sometimes combustible -- results.

Is It Any Good?

Simultaneously as imperfect and as maddeningly funny as director Todd Phillips ' previous comedy, The Hangover , DUE DATE is a coup. That is, if you can ignore the fact that the basic premise -- two polar opposites take to the road -- has been done before, and some would say better. ( Planes, Trains and Automobiles , anyone?) While it's true that the movie is uneven -- some jokes play better than others (the ones that have Ethan needing to be reminded to go to the bathroom are grating) -- and exhibits a mean streak (Peter borders on scary), this road-trip comedy benefits from two elements: Zach Galifianakis and Robert Downey Jr.

Galifianakis plays Ethan like a made-to-order eccentric of a type found in many ensemble comedies, complete with weirdnesses that feel random and excessive. But the actor is skilled enough to make Ethan sympathetic, even likable. That's doubly true for Downey. Despite playing a character who borders on dangerously enraged, his performance is so grounded in the now, in what's real, that we're willing to ride along on this outrageous adventure. Combined, the two make a disarmingly appealing pair.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about the movie's boundary-pushing humor involving sex , drugs, etc. Is the film condoning or glorifying this kind of behavior?

Why do you think opposites-attract storylines are so popular, especially in roadtrip comedies? How does this film compare to others in the genre?

What do Peter and Ethan learn from each other? Does the film ultimately have a positive message?

‘Between Two Ferns: The Movie’ Trailer: Zach Galifianakis Hits the Road for Netflix

Click here to read the full article.

Only someone as funny and weird as Zach Galifianakis could jump the line from web series to TV show and go straight to making a movie. Well, a Netflix movie, at least. For his next project, the actor and comedian has adapted his hit Funny or Die interview series “ Between Two Ferns ” into a feature-length movie. “Between Two Ferns: The Movie” will hit Netflix later this month, and the first official trailer promises a wild ride full of celebrity cameos, Galifianakis asking famous people uncomfortable questions that have been thoroughly vetted, washed out lighting and physical comedy.

While the trailer doesn’t offer much in the way of a plot set-up, there does appear to be some semblance of one. The Netflix synopsis offers: “Zach Galifianakis and his oddball crew take a road trip to complete a series of high-profile celebrity interviews and restore his reputation.”

'Between Two Ferns' Movie: Zach Galifianakis and Co-Star David Letterman Reveal Details

That otherwise sparkling reputation is in danger due to a burst water pipe incident that inadvertently kills Matthew Mcconaughey, at least momentarily, as Will Ferrell admonishes Galifianakis. Ferrell promises Galifianakis a real TV talk show if he can clean up his mess. After all — he is a straight white man, he deserves it, he quips. He then embarks on a road trip with his small misfit crew, an eclectic band of comedians that includes “Crashing” star Lauren Lapkus, in search of grander interview subjects.

Along the way, he encounters fellow famous people such as Peter Dinklage, Benedict Cumberbatch (whose name he can’t pronounce), Paul Rudd, Tiffany Haddish, Brie Larson (who doesn’t answer his question about her first period), Keanu Reeves, Jon Hamm (whom he calls a “hot idiot”), David Letterman, Jason Schwartzman, Adam Scott, John Cho, Chance the Rapper, Rashida Jones, Hailee Steinfeld, John Legend, Chrissy Teigen (who propositions him), and Tessa Thompson.

Galifianakis is best know for his breakout role in “The Hangover” franchise, and has since become one of the most beloved comedic actors of his generation. He co-created the FX series, “Baskets,” a critical darling that just concluded this summer after four seasons.

“Between Two Ferns: The Movie” will become available to stream on Netflix on September 20. Check out the highly entertaining first trailer below.

It Was Supposed To Be the Crowning Brat Pack Movie — Then the Critics Came

If you love 'parasite,' you need to check out bong joon-ho’s epic creature feature, gerard butler had to give up one crucial thing to get cast in '300'.

Back in 2010, Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis were riding high on newfound fame and fortune. The world was having a love affair with Downey, who had suddenly become Hollywood’s biggest A-list star after he stepped into the role of Marvel's Iron Man , effectively kicking off what would become the Marvel Cinematic Universe . After that was his Oscar-nominated performance in Tropic Thunder , followed by his leading role as the great detective , Sherlock Holmes. Meanwhile, comedian Galifianakis finally hit it big with his role as Alan in the global smash hit, The Hangover . But do you remember when both actors starred opposite each other in a road trip buddy comedy?

It was the 2010 film, Due Date . Somewhat of a spiritual successor to the Steve Martin and John Candy comedy, Planes, Trains and Automobiles , Downey and Galifianakis are an oddball pairing in a raucous comedy. Due Date was fairly successful for its time and featured an A-list cast, but it's rarely discussed these days. Oh, and it was directed by Todd Phillips , a filmmaker who is likely best known to moviegoers and comic book fans for a little movie called Joker . With Downey returning to theaters this summer in Christopher Nolan ’s historical drama, Oppenheimer , his first movie since 2020’s Dolittle , and Phillips hard at work on Joker: Folie à Deux , it’s time to revisit their 2010 comedy.

RELATED: Please, Robert Downey Jr., Do Comedies Again!

'Due Date' Has a Talented Cast and Crew

The film Due Date has a lot going for it, featuring top talent in front of and behind the camera. The film features Downey as its protagonist, a straight-laced architect, Peter Highman, simply trying to get back to LA since his wife, Sarah ( Michelle Monaghan ), is about to give birth. After a series of unfortunate events, he’s stuck traveling across the country with the eccentric oddball, Ethan Tremblay (Galifianakis), and Ethan’s dog Sonny. Of course, many hijinks ensue. Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx , Oscar-nominated Juliette Lewis , and Danny McBride appear in the film in supporting roles throughout the various misadventures, rounding out the fairly talented cast of veteran thespians and comedic talents.

Behind the camera is Todd Phillips, fresh off the success of The Hangover , a genre-defining R-rated comedy that became a box office smash, grossing $468 million worldwide. At the time of Due Date ’s release, Phillips was best known for the other successful comedies he directed throughout the 2000s, such as another road trip comedy, aptly titled Road Trip , as well as Old School , and Starsky & Hutch .

'Due Date' Borrows a Lot From Other Comedies

Overall, Due Date was a success at the box office . Budgeted at $65 million, the film made $100 million domestically and $211 million worldwide. While audiences appeared to enjoy the film, critics were not as kind, as the film scored a 40% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes. As for why so few people appear to discuss the movie these days, the film served as more of a transitional footnote for both lead actors at different points in their careers. In the role of Ethan, Galifianakis still seems to be in the mode of his Hangover performance. In terms of personality, performance, and dialogue, the socially awkward Ethan is virtually identical to Alan from The Hangover . Also, Due Date owes much of its identity to the John Hughes classic, Planes, Trains and Automobiles; entire beats and scenes were lifted from the latter.

The scene where Peter and Ethan are in the car, and Ethan is playing Pink Floyd while getting high on marijuana is comparable to the scene in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles with John Candy as Del Griffith is driving and listening to Ray Charles' "Mess Around." He then accidentally ends up driving the car to the wrong side of the road. Martin's character, Neal Page, eventually wakes up when they are nearly sandwiched between two freight trucks, and he has a vision of Candy dressed up like a devil. Likewise, in Due Date , when Peter wakes up from his nap, due to hallucinating from the drugs, he sees Ethan looking like a giant bear. The film follows a very similar structure to the 1987 film from how Peter and Ethan first meet in an incident involving a taxi to how these two very opposite individuals are thrust together in their comedic misadventure. While Due Date was reasonably successful, it didn't do as well as The Hangover. Critics appeared to be unimpressed with Galifianakis playing a character who so closely resembled Alan from The Hangover yet again in all but name. The film also followed the road trip comedy playbook very closely, so much so that the film resembles a remake of Planes, Trains and Automobiles in all but name. Audiences likely saw this to some degree as well, making Due Date come off like a comedic rehash.

Downey and Galifianakis Make for an Epic Comedic Duo

Despite the derivative elements , Due Date is elevated by Galifianakis and Downey's tremendous onscreen chemistry. Peter is an empathetic figure as the audience's window in, constantly tortured and routinely punished due to the comedic antics of Ethan. While Ethan is the source of the many problems and obstacles Peter faces throughout the adventure, Ethan's affable nature succeeds in making him incredibly likable and charming. Not to mention, Galifianakis' dialogue and comedic timing are as impeccable as ever in Due Date , making him the perfect foil to Downey.

'Due Date' Lacks Emotional Poignancy

While Due Date follows many familiar beats of the road trip comedy , what it perhaps could have used a bit more of was some more genuine, emotional moments. The Grand Canyon scene is one such moment, as Peter shows remarkable compassion toward Ethan when he is spreading his father's ashes. Considering Peter is about to become a father, the film appears to hint there might be some anxiety on his part, or that Peter is attempting to overcome his own trauma of a father he lost. The best road trip comedies are ones that are able to manage both the comedic high jinks, along with developing the characters into well-rounded individuals. Due Date focuses more on the extreme, outrageous comedic material over the more poignant emotional parts. Due Date fails to meet the standard of Planes, Trains and Automobiles because the emotionally poignant and bittersweet moments of that film are the ones filmmaker John Hughes hits hardest .

While Due Date didn’t become an all-time comedy classic, all the main players experienced continued exceptional career success following the film's release. Due Date is not a groundbreaking all-time classic road trip comedy, but it still has its enjoyable moments, thanks in large part to the talents of both Downey and Galifianakis.

Apple TV+ shows and movies: Everything to watch on Apple TV Plus

Avatar for Benjamin Mayo

Apple TV+ offers exclusive Apple original TV shows and movies in 4K HDR quality. You can watch across all of your screens and pick up where you left off on any device. Apple TV+ costs $9.99 per month. Here’s every Apple original television show and movie available now on Apple TV+, as well as the latest trailers …

Apple TV+ content is available exclusively through the Apple TV app . You can watch on your Apple TV set-top box, iPhone, or iPad as you might expect.

But you don’t need the latest Apple TV 4K to enjoy Apple TV+. The TV app is also available on other platforms like Amazon Fire TV , Roku , Sony PlayStation , Xbox , and even the web at tv.apple.com .

Apple TV+ offers original comedies, dramas, thrillers, documentaries, and kids shows.

For your $9.99/month subscription, you can watch all of Apple’s originals — as listed below. You can download to watch offline too. Apple is adding new content every single month.

How to watch the free Apple TV+ shows

road trip movie with zach galifianakis

The TV app is the exclusive destination for Apple TV+, but the TV app is a little confusing because it blends together purchasable TV shows and movies from the iTunes Store, which you can buy or rent, content from other apps like Amazon Prime and Disney+, and Apple TV Channels.

The Watch Now screen does not really distinguish between content that you own and can watch, and just Apple’s general recommendations.

The easiest way to get started with Apple TV+ is to open the Apple TV app on your device , and tap on the Originals tab. (On some platforms, this tab is simply labelled using the ‘tv+’ logo.)

This tab takes you to the Apple TV+ channel page. This shows you all of the Apple TV+ shows and movies available to watch, separated into categories like comedy, drama and family fun.

Be aware, the web experience at tv.apple.com is a bit barebonds compared to the native TV app on devices, and it only shows Apple original content. For the best experience, use the TV app on a device like Apple TV 4K .

What to watch on Apple TV+

Apple TV+ (Apple TV Plus, or as some erroneously call it Apple+ TV) is still in its infancy but has already seen breakout hits including comedy Ted Lasso and workplace sci-fi drama Severance .

Apple aims for premium quality across its drama, comedy, and documentary TV shows and movies so everything should reach a reasonable level of quality and hopefully be worth your time. In terms of personal recommendations, I suggest starting with Ted Lasso , For All Mankind , Severance , Trying , and the movie Finch .
