5 of the uk’s best safari lodges.

If you had your hopes pinned on a safari this year you needn’t miss out – as you can still get up close to elephants, cheetahs and lions in wildlife lodges across the UK

1. West Midland Safari Park

Cheetahs at West Midland Safari Park (West Midland Safari Park)

Cheetahs at West Midland Safari Park (West Midland Safari Park)

Tanzania might not be an option this year but you can still drive 6.5km through West Midland Safari Park near Birmingham, which is home to zebras, Congo buffalo, Indian rhino and critically endangered Bactrian camels.

To see some of the animals at night – after most visitors have left for the day – you can now stay over in one of the park’s eight new safari lodges.

As well as the lodges, the animals’ habitats have also been renovated, so the park’s three African elephants now have access to an outdoor paddock and drinking pool 24 hours a day. Six of the lodges have large windows and an outdoor deck overlooking the pool, so you can observe Latabe, Five and Sutton as they drink. The two-storey lodges blend in with the paddock as they feature thatched roofs, wooden floors, woven rugs and straw lampshades. The two other lodges overlook the cheetahs’ lair, with floor-to-ceiling windows in the bedrooms providing a perfect view of cheetahs Azrael and Bappe. A Red Panda Cottage is also due to open in spring 2021.

For more information visit West Midland Safari Park .

2. Longleat

A white rhino (Shutterstock)

A white rhino (Shutterstock)

Once the grounds of a 16th century manor house, Longleat opened as a safari park in 1966. Sandwiched between Bath and Salisbury, the reserve is four times the size of London’s Richmond Park, and home to game more at home on the plains of Zimbabwe.

Visitors can drive in their own vehicle or hop on a safari bus to see tigers, white rhinos and lions. Alternatively, you can join a walking safari to see lemurs, African tortoises and the black-headed Somali sheep.

For a close up of the zebras and giraffes, however, book a night in a cottage. There are three to choose from: East Lodge, which includes a guided tour of the grounds, and Keeper’s House and Keeper’s Cottage, both of which include a guided safari tour in a 4x4.

For more information visit Longleat .

3. Port Lympne Safari Park

Friendly giraffes (Shutterstock)

Swap Kenya for Kent on a safari at Port Lympne Safari Park on the edge of the Kent Downs. Covid rules permitting, you can choose one of three ranger-led safaris, during which you will see black rhino, wildebeest, ostriches and critically endangered Rothschild giraffes.

For a more intimate experience, stay overnight and see the animals once most guests have gone home. The 243-hectare estate is home to wigwams, shepherds’ huts, a treehouse hotel and an igloo-style ‘bubble’ designed for stargazers. Depending on the accommodation you choose, you might be able to observe Amur leopards from Leopard Creek or watch TV side by side with Adras, Oudrika and their offspring on the other side of an enormous window in Lion Lodge.

For more information visit Port Lympne Safari Park .

4. Camp Baboon

Okapi (Shutterstock)

Set within the Wild Place Project, this camp on the outskirts of Bristol is home to lemurs, pygmy goats, eland and okapi, which is endemic to the Congo.

The site has 10 wishbone-shaped cabins for overnight guests, who can help feed some of the animals on a morning tour before the site opens to the public. You can also join an evening tour and rangers’ workshops to learn bush craft skills under a canopy in the woods and around a firepit. As well as entry to Wild Place Project, overnight guests can visit Bristol Zoo Gardens for free, too.

For more information visit Camp Baboon .

5. ZSL London Zoo

An Asiatic lion (Shutterstock)

There are only 520 Asiatic lions left in Gir National Park in Gujarati in the north west of India. While you may not be able to travel there at the moment, you can see a pride of the endangered animals in Land of the Lions, a breeding centre inside ZSL London Zoo.

The London enclosure is modelled after the national park, complete with railway tracks, a corrugated roof, train station ticket hall and a crumbling temple. Visitors stroll on raised boardwalks over the lions to a viewing area. You can also spend the night in one of nine cabins in Gir Lion Lodge. A stay includes three tours that take place once the zoo is closed to the public.

For more information visit ZSL London Zoo .

A safari tent in a grassy meadow

If you’re an animal lover looking for a unique and thrilling experience in the UK, spending the night in a safari lodge might be just what you’re looking for.

Safari parks in the UK offer an opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the world’s most majestic creatures, while UK nature reserves display the best of British wildlife. But what makes both of these experiences truly unforgettable is the opportunity to spend the night in a safari lodge, surrounded by the sounds and thrill of the wild.

In this blog post, we’ll explore some of the best safari lodges in the UK, as well as safari parks and nature reserves that offer overnight stays, so you can plan your next adventure with ease.

Best safari park lodges and hotels in the UK where you can see the likes of elephants, cheetahs and giraffes right from your room

Cheetahs peer into a lodge through a window at the new West Midlands Safari Park accommodation

  • 14:35, 16 Jun 2021

A safari holiday is one of those trips that's on everyone's bucket list - and there are some pretty incredible safari lodges to dream about.

However, safaris can be seriously expensive trips, not to mention that holidays abroad aren't exactly on the cards for Brits right now.

The good news is that there are some brilliant UK safari parks where you can actually spend the night, and enjoy views of the like sof elephants, cheetahs and giraffes right from your room!

Then there are the lodges themselves with glamorous interiors, and extra perks such as exclusive tours of parks and zoos.

We take a look at some of the UK's best safari lodges and hotels to have on your radar for a memorable trip...

West Midlands Safari Park

West Midlands Safari Park has opened eight luxurious new lodges, all of which offer direct views over animal habitats.

Six of the lodges look out to the elephants, who often come to the nearby pond for a drink, while two overlook the cheetahs' habitat.

You can watch the animals from your bedroom, or opt to take in the views from the open plan living room and dining area with floor-to-ceiling windows so you don't miss anything. (You can take a sneak peek inside the lodges here ).

Prices will start from £171 per adult and £147 per child for a night's stay. You can find out more on safari-lodges.co.uk .

Port Lympne, Kent

Port Lympne offers up some luxurious lodges complete with a master bedroom and open plan living area, which offer direct views across animal habitats. Those staying in the Lion or Tiger Lodges can enjoy huge floor-to-ceiling windows so you can get up close to the animals without leaving the sofa, while the adults-only Giraffe Lodge comes with a private deck from which you can watch the giraffes.

Other perks include exclusive out-of-hours access to the Port Lympne Hotel & Reserve, access to the safari parks and a safari experience included as part of the package.

There are also treehouse stays and glamping pods available.

Prices vary depending on lodge of choice. You can find out more on aspinallfoundation.org/port-lympne .

Longleat has opened some luxury cottages in the heart of its safari park, from which you can watch animals such as giraffes as they wander around the grounds.

There are also perks such as a guided safari tour of the park, park tickets for your stay, and breakfast being included.

As reported by SomersetLive , prices for the Keeper’s Cottage prices start at £500 per night, and £750 for Keeper’s House (which includes an exclusive 4x4 tour of the Safari Park).

You can find out more at longleat.co.uk .

ZSL London Zoo

London Zoo's lodges don't offer direct views of animals, but they are located right by the lion enclosure so you can listen out for sounds from the creatures.

There are plenty of perks for budding zoologists such as exclusive tours of the zoo, a chance to feed animals their breakfast, discounts on meet-the-animals experiences, and more.

You can find out more on zsl.org/zsl-london-zoo .

Chessington Safari Hotel

Chessington Safari Hotel's rooms offer views across the resort's Wanyama Reserve where plenty of animals reside from zebras to meerkats.

The hotel offers both standard and themed rooms, the latter including Tiger, Giraffe, Zebra and even Penguin themes, and even rooms inspired by The Gruffalo and Room on the Broom. (It's actually in our top picks of the UK's best themed hotels for families too!).

Perks for guests include entry to the theme park, zoo and SEA LIFE centre, breakfast, and early access to rides before they open to the public.

You can find out more on chessingtonholidays.co.uk .

Your safari starts at 1.45pm and takes around 1 – 1 ½ hours. We advise that you take a bathroom break before boarding the safari truck as there are no stops until you reach Giraffe Lodge. We also advise that you take a coat/extra layer on safari.

How do we redeem our free admission to Howletts?

As part of your stay you get free admission to our sister park, Howletts Wild Animal Park, approximately half an hour away near Canterbury. When arriving at the Howletts Gatehouse, please provide your reservation name from Port Lympne or show your booking confirmation for free admission.

Are the tents heated?

Although there is a heater in your tent it can get cold during adverse weather and the early spring/autumn months.  We would advise that you pack appropriate clothing for the current weather conditions.

Are there any kettles/hair dryers for the tents?

Tea and coffee making facilities are available in your tent, however, we do not advise that hairdryers are used due to the limited supply of electricity to the tents.

Can we bring our own alcohol to the lodge?

Guests are not permitted to bring their own alcohol, however, there is a bar in the restaurant where you may purchase drinks to accompany your meal.

Are there toilets in the restaurant?

Unfortunately, there are no toilets in the restaurant. You can either use the en suite in your tent or the main shower block a short walk away at the top of the slope.

Can we have candles in the tent?

We do not allow candles or any naked flames in or around the tents for Health & Safety reasons. Lamps are provided in your tent.

Where can we smoke?

There are two designated smoking areas. One by the shower block at the top of the slope and the other is located behind the Lapa restaurant. There is a strict no smoking policy in or around the tents.

The exclusive retreat is tucked away in Africa's only Shetani lava flow.

Sir Richard Branson, renowned for his strategic business moves, is adding a wild new safari experience to his exclusive Virgin Limited Edition portfolio. The award-winning Finch Hattons Luxury Safari Camp in Kenya, nestled in Africa's only Shetani lava flow, has officially joined the Virgin family. This addition enhances the unique offerings of Branson's carefully curated collection of resorts and strengthens his presence in Kenya, making Finch Hattons the second property in the country.

Finch Hattons, a jewel in the crown of the Gehlot family's three decades of safari expertise, offers 17 tented suites. Nestled in Africa's only Shetani lava flow, it provides stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro and an opportunity to explore the unique Shetani lava flow. This is a destination that beckons anyone with a thirst for an African adventure, coupled with the modern comforts of a luxury safari camp.

"Africa is one of my favorite parts of the world," Branson said. "Each corner offers something entirely unique, surrounded by rich heritage and culture. I'm delighted Finch Hattons and all of the incredible wildlife in the Tsavo National Park will join our Virgin family, and I can't wait to visit soon."

Get up close and personal with wildlife.

The camp joins other African destinations in Virgin Limited Edition's collection, including Mahali Mzuri, Ulusaba Private Game Reserve, Mont Rochelle Hotel & Vineyard, and Kasbah Tamadot. Together, they showcase Africa's rich landscapes, diverse wildlife, and vibrant cultures.

Writer explains johnny depp and amber heard joke in ‘the fall guy’, ufc st louis results bonus winners from night of memorable finishes.

James Bermingham, CEO of Virgin Hotels Collection, added, "Finch Hattons is a family-owned luxury tented safari camp, and I could not be more delighted that our guests will now be able to experience the very best of Kenya in two equally beautiful safari camps, each with its own unique offering."

At the heart of Finch Hattons are family values, community connections, and sustainability, which perfectly align with Virgin Limited Edition's ethos. Leena Gehlot, Managing Partner of Finch Hattons, expressed,

"Finch Hattons is not just a luxury tented safari camp, it is a deeply-rooted part of our entire family and our family group of businesses, KG Group. For over five generations, our family has had firm roots in Kenya, and we are immensely proud of our very special safari camp." This shared commitment to family, community, and sustainability is what makes the addition of Finch Hattons to the Virgin Limited Edition portfolio a perfect match.

Spend your nights in a luxe safari tent.

Bringing Finch Hattons into the Virgin Limited Edition portfolio is a significant step for the Gehlots. "We could not have asked for a better brand that shares the same values as us," Leena Gehlot continued. "Our team looks forward to sharing their local wisdom and culture, as well as our beautiful luxury tented safari camp, to continue creating the incredible individual experiences a Virgin Limited Edition property is known for."

Starting July 1, 2024, Finch Hattons will officially join the Virgin Limited Edition family. Rates start at $796 per person per night, which includes accommodations, all meals and drinks, and activities like game drives, Shetani lava flow excursions, Oldonyo Larami volcano hikes, yoga, nature walks, and return airstrip transfers.

James Bermingham added, "Growth is very much part of our plan for the entire collection over the coming years, and this is just the start as we look to expand our guest choice across the globe. We are privileged to have a very special portfolio, and it's incredibly important to protect this and grow carefully with those that offer the same extraordinary and personal experiences our guests have come to love and expect."

Fergus Scholes . Photography by Carl van der Linde

Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.

The outstretched arm of our tracker gestures towards some treetops a few hundred yards away: his ability to spot the seemingly invisible is astounding. Luke, our guide, cuts the engine of the Land Cruiser and turns around: “Can you see? Just through that clearing to the left.”

Following his direction through my binoculars, I pick out the majestic-looking bird: dark brown head with tufted crown, white breast and piercing yellow eyes. Luke fills me in: “Sometimes nicknamed the ‘leopard of the air’, it’s a martial eagle, with a wingspan of up to 2.5m, one of the world’s largest birds of prey, and the largest in Africa.” This apex predator remains on its perch for a precious few minutes, then suddenly takes flight and disappears into the distance.

A pair of little bee-eaters

I’ve come to andBeyond’s Phinda Mountain Lodge in eastern South Africa on a birdwatching safari. The lodge sits in an elevated position with views across Phinda Private Game Reserve ’s 73,800 acres; its seven ecosystems offer an unusually varied habitat, from lush greenery to open savannah. The foothills of the low‑lying Lebombo mountains stretch 500 miles north into Mozambique, and the azure waters of the Indian Ocean lie just 20 miles east.

Most guests are here for the big game, but an impressive 436 bird species also makes the reserve a popular birding destination, so andBeyond’s specialist itinerary allows me to indulge a lifelong hobby.

Two great egrets and a grey heron perch in a tree above the Mvubu dam

Much of our first morning is hijacked by my enthusiasm to identify every bird we see, which means we get no further than 200 yards from the lodge in the first hour. But in the afternoon, we head directly to the dry sand forest, which is home to unusual endemic species.

A bright colour flashes by before perching on a small branch

Surrounded by an elephant exclusion fence, we leave the vehicle and set out on foot – as strict protocol dictates, our guide leads from the front with a high-calibre rifle in hand. Orchids and lichen grow in profusion, and some of the Lebombo wattle trees are believed to date back over 1,000 years. The dense vegetation makes getting a good view of the birds more challenging, but we still spot plenty, including African green pigeons, the paradise flycatcher with its unmistakably long tail feathers, and the crested barbet. Then we’re treated to the endemic pink-throated twinspot, a distinctive waxbill with a bright head and black chest with white spots. Extant in just a handful of other locations nearby, this is a favourite for many visiting birders.

The author uses the Swarovski Optik AX Visio binoculars with a Zulu tracker

My bird knowledge – largely limited to the British Isles – is of little help here in South Africa, so my guide has been invaluable. However, I’ve also been given access to the world’s first AI-supported binoculars, released this year, which enable me to make positive IDs myself. The Swarovski Optik AX Visio (£3,820) combines high-end optics (10x32) with bird identification software. You get the desired bird in your sights, and at the press of a button a suggested species appears on the heads-up display. Behind the scenes, the binoculars are cross-checking the image and GPS coordinates against Merlin Bird ID’s extensive database of more than 8,000 bird species (Merlin’s app is divided up into groups, allowing you to download extra information on the species found in a given region; I installed the South Africa pack of 712 birds.)

A gulp of reed cormorants, egrets and African darters roost above the waters of the Mvubu dam

Making our way in the vehicle once again, we come across zebra with red-billed oxpeckers picking ticks and parasites from their backs. A little further on, we glimpse a southern fiscal; a black-and-white shrike that also goes by the name of butcher bird due to its habit of impaling its prey on acacia thorns for later consumption. Then, as we pass a small water source, a bright colour flashes by before perching on a small branch; it’s a malachite kingfisher. Meanwhile, a three-banded plover moves busily along the water’s edge, foraging for insects. Luke then spots its nest, which is little more than a shallow depression on the beach containing two small grey mottled eggs.

The author in the rare sand forest – in front of a centuries-old Lebombo wattle tree

Over the course of three days, the binoculars help me correctly identify 68 species of bird. Although there are a few, around 30, with which the technology struggled. Sometimes the bird is too far away, or it is obscured by twigs, or the image was blurred – but more often than not, with a good, clear view, the binoculars do an impressive job of identification. Moreover, because a photo is saved with each press of the button, I have a comprehensive photographic diary for later scrutiny.

A flock of white-faced whistling ducks

On my last day, as the sun drops low on the horizon, we stop at a clearing next to the waters of the Mvubu dam, which makes a sublime setting for sundowners. A handful of blue-cheeked bee-eaters flutter above the still waters, a flock of white-faced whistling ducks complete their final flyby, and the nearby hippos quieten their grunting for the night. Biltong and drinks polished off, we hop back in the vehicle and make our way under a starry night sky. Sitting back, I reflect on my first birding safari experience – spotting more than 100 bird species, taking in the big five along the way and myriad other wildlife, it’s been as rewarding a trip as I could have hoped for.

A blue-cheeked bee-eater

Fergus Scholes travelled as a guest of andBeyond , on an abbreviated version of its nine-night Beyond Average Birding in South Africa experience, which costs from £9,200pp sharing. Includes internal flights, dedicated safari vehicle and specialist birding guide, accommodation, laundry, meals and drinks, andbeyond.com. Guests will be able to book a pair of Swarovski Optik AX Visio binoculars from July, POA

The Wildlife

Lions are impressive, large cats that live in groups, which are called prides. One of the most recognisable aspects of a lion is its mane, which is the longer hair male lions grow around their head, neck and chest. The colour of a mane can vary from lighter blondes, to much darker browns and blacks. Male lions roar to warn the pride about danger, scare off intruders and show their dominance – it can be heard up to five miles away!

Watch our bachelor group of lions as they play together and explore their new home. They were born here at the Park in the summer of 2019 and are growing into stunning young males!

The four brothers are called Havoc, Hodge, Harabi and Hercules with Havoc having the darkest fur of the group – see if you can spot him!
