To search the exact word on a lyrics site or find the precise keyword on a webpage, you have to rely on Safari’s search text feature. On Mac, Command + F does the job. How to Search for a Word on a Webpage on iPad or iPhone

Some years ago, I figured out how to search a webpage for a keyword in Safari on Mac. This is an extremely useful, timesaving tool; it saves you having to browse through the page to find what you are looking for – if the information you seek is there at all. I also have an iPad and an iPhone, and although I’m pretty sure I had looked around at the various menu options available for Safari on i OS/iPadOS , I hadn’t seen anything that looked like a page search option, and so I had dismissed the idea of using my iPad or iPhone and just used my Mac when I needed to find a keyword on a webpage.

Search the Page in Safari

On iphone or ipad.

You can look for specific words or phrases on a webpage in Safari.

• Open the website (page) you want to search.
• If necessary, scroll up (by sliding your finger down the page) a little until the menu bar appears at the bottom of your screen.

• Enter the word or phrase in the search field.
• You will be able to see how many results are found for your word or phrase, and if there is more than one result, you can scroll through the results by tapping on the up and down arrows next to the search field.

• When you are finished searching, tap Done.

• Open Safari and navigate to the page you wish to search.
• Command – F. Press the Command key, followed by the F key, then release both.
• Go to the Safari menu at the top of your screen. Go to Edit > Find > Find.
• Type a word or phrase in the search field that appears near the top of your Safari window.
• You can scroll through the results using the forward and backward arrows.
• Click on Done when you have finished your search.

How to search the web on an iPad

Searching the web on an iPad is simple to do, as all iPads are automatically set up with an internet browser called Safari. Safari is the program you use to access the internet and view web pages. All you need to do is locate Safari on your iPad and type in what you’re searching for… and away you go!

You’ll need:

• An iPad with an internet connection.

Follow these step-by-step instructions to search the web on an iPad 

Step 1: On the home screen, which is the screen that appears when you turn on your iPad and has all the icons on it, find and tap once on the Safari icon, which is the icon that looks like a compass.

Step 2: A new screen will appear with a long grey bar along the top. This is the search bar where you can type in a website address or specific words that you want to search for. Tap once anywhere along the grey bar and a virtual keyboard will appear for you to type in your search words.

Step 3: As you start to type, Google will predict what you are looking for and a list of suggestions will appear beneath the search bar. If you’d like to choose one of these suggestions, tap on it once and a new page will open with your search results. If none of the suggestions are correct, carry on typing and when you’re ready to search tap on the rectangular blue Go button on the right hand side of the keyboard.

Step 4: A new page will appear with a list of search results relating to your search words. As with searching the web on a computer, tap on the blue title of the web page you’d like to look at to open that web page.

The Smart Search bar in iOS 15 is a hybrid of the old address and search bars melded into one universal place to type and go. You can access your default search provider, your browsing history, saved bookmarks, and even specific words on web pages, all through the unified Smart Search bar at the top of your Safari browsing window. It makes searching for something on your best iPhone more straightforward. Here's how to use the Smart Search bar in Safari on iPhone and iPad.

• Launch Safari from the Home screen.

• Tap on the site or bookmark you would like to navigate to under the Bookmarks and History heading.

• Open Safari on your iPhone or iPad.
• Open a web page in Safari.
• Tap the Smart Search bar .

• Type the word or phrase that you want to find on the page.
• Tap the word or phrase under On this Page.

• Tap the navigation buttons to jump to each instance of the word if there's more than one.
• Tap Done when you're finished.

Everyone has their favorite search engine. Make sure yours is programmed as the default and use the Smart Search bar in Safari.

• Tap on Settings from your Home screen.
• Tap on Safari (you may have to scroll down to find it).

• Tap on Search Engine .
• Tap on your preferred search engine from the list.

Next time you open up Safari and type something into the Smart Search bar, it will use your newly-set search engine.

In iOS 15 , super-powered the native search functionality available to the left of the Home screen. When you enter a search term in the Search feature, you'll see suggested web searches and even websites based on your term.

• Swipe right on your Home screen to navigate to search.
• Enter your search term in your search bar.
• Tap the search result you want.

As you can see in the example above, the search terms that iOS found for "iMore" will automatically open Safari and search the web using that term.

The Smart Search bar can be at the top or bottom

If you're on iOS 15, you may notice that Apple switched the search/address bar from the top of the screen in Safari to the bottom of the screen. There's no functionality difference between the two options, but if you prefer the Smart Search bar to be at the top rather than the bottom, you can change the location of the address bar in Settings .

How to Find Text Within a Page in OS X

The Command+F keyboard shortcut for Find could be the biggest timesaving shortcut you'll ever learn. With it, you can jump to sections containing a certain word or phrase. It also works in most programs or apps, so you can use it not just for Safari, but with Word or Notes as well.

1. Press Command+F to bring up the in-page search box. Alternatively, you can go to the Edit menu > Find > Find… to bring up the search box.

2. Type in your search word or phrase and hit Enter. Safari will highlight all of the instances of the word on the page.

3. Click the left and right arrow buttons to scroll through the search results.

4. Important: If you want to broaden the search results, click the menu within the search box to switch between "Contains" and "Starts With." 

So, for example, if your search string is "light", Safari by default will search for all words that begin with "light": lighthouse, lightbulb, and so on. Switch the option to "Contains" and Safari will also find words like spotlight and sunlight.

To much scams…please READ!

So whenever I use this app/ Safari it get these trackers and scammers to get my location and this is making me nervous. I installed ad blocker I think it’s called and I blocked some trackers which made me feel better. Every time you search something you usually get a scam or tracker. I do not like when people track me down. I rarely use this app because of the scams and risks. I think it is an OK app in general because it’s the people making these small BAD websites. The reason I gave it 4 stars is because it could use work but it is pretty much like google. I use google way more because I feel like it is much safer than safari. I could be wrong… Safari could use some work with all these BAD websites. Can you block these bad websites? I would love to block these websites cause they are scary. Also watch out for nine anime/ 9anime websites… I searched up 9anime on safari and clicked a link. It looked safe but then these inappropriate pop ups kept coming. I immediately got off. I checked my ‘ How much trackers we have prevented’ or whatever it’s called it said that it had prevented 14 trackers from getting my IP address. This was good and bad news. I’m glad that safari and google can prevent these trackers but it is bad because this is dangerous. BE CAREFUL ON SAFARI!!!

Your Underrated Prince, Safari

In my humble opinion, Safari is the underrated king among multiple web browsers on the market. I was a PC devotee from ‘95 to ‘16, since then, it’s been all Tim Cook 🍎 all the time. My only regret is not purchasing a smartphone back in ‘07 from Steve Jobs. Presently, I own an iPhone 6s Plus in rose gold (2016), iPad Mini (2016), iPad Pro (2019) & MacBook (2018) in rose gold with matching Beats By Dre headphones. All four are set up with Safari, not Chrome, TOR, Brave, Edge, or DDGo. I love the ability to quickly save favorites, add to reading list & share content to other platforms. My favorites are alphabetized for quick reference & the reading list keeps all articles & pages in chronological order for quick recall. Also, I learned Safari quickly because it’s extremely user friendly. The browser helped my navigation of Apple when switching from PC. I’ll admit, learning MacBook isn’t easy, but, Safari keeps things familiar for me on the desktop. When lost, just go back to Safari & start over. It’s surprising no one in tech media mentions Safari more often as a go to source for navigating the internet. Chrome is the reigning king of, Land Of Browsers, without an heir apparent. I nominate Safari as the prince with future king potential. Citizens of Land Of Browsers don’t like their chrome-plated dirty laundry aired, sold or tracked.

I have been using this for years and had no problems with it. I ran over my phone with my lawn mower and was without my phone for over a year due to having to fight with the insurance company. However when I finally got a lawyer involved the insurance company finally replaced it for me. I DID not lose anything and I mean anything. I like the cards better because they are easier to clear out. You have to back everything up to your cloud every day or every other day so that you don’t have to worry about losing anything. As I always make sure that I back everything up just in case. It is not apples fault if you lose your any of your information it is yours for not backing up your phone to your cloud. So most of the people who write bad reviews either don’t back up or they just don’t or they just don’t care. Apple doesn’t charge a lot to add more space to your cloud so there is no reason why you can’t back you things. This is better than anything that google has. By far. If you want your information used by third parties then use google’s and quit complaining. You can change your browser in safari so that you don’t have to use them get with it you bad reviews and learn how to use safari.

How to search in a page or website in Mobile Safari

Ever since iOS 9, iOS has had a dedicated share extension to search the current web page in Safari. You just hit the sharing arrow , then choose Find in Page on the bottom row of options, and then you can type in your query. It works, and it works well, but it’s a very clunky method for doing something that requires a single keystroke (Command-F) on the Mac.

Today we’ll look at some alternatives for finding text in a web page on iOS, along with a bonus tip for site-wide searches.

Safari’s built-in page search

Mobile Safari has two ways to get to the same page search. I mentioned one above, and it’s the most obvious. It is also the most annoying to use, as you have to tap around finding the correct share-sheet item to invoke.

Another way to access Mobile Safari’s find-in-page feature is to just type your search term into the URL bar, as if you were about to visit another web page, or do a Duck Duck Go search. As you type, Safari will do its usual auto-complete business, but what you may never have noticed is that, at the bottom of the list, there’s a section called On This Page . Here, if Safari has found your search term in the current page, the number of results will be displayed. Tap this result and you’ll be taken to the same search-results view as if you had used the awkward share-sheet version.

From here, tap the tiny arrows in the search bar to page through the results. You can also tap the Done button when you’re done.

Search in a Mobile Safari page with the keyboard

The very best way to search in a Mobile Safari page is to use an attached keyboard. Just hit Command-F like you would on a Mac, and type in your search. This uses the exact same search interface as the non-keyboard method, but it’s way faster to access. Once you have accused the search, you can use the Mac’s Command-G shortcut to jump to the next occurrence of your search term in the page, and Shift-Command-G to jump backwards through the results.

A neat old-school way to search in a page

Safari’s built-in find-in-page tools are great, but they lag behind the Mac in one crucial way. On the Mac, the whole page is dimmed, and every instance of your search term is highlighted. Using Command-G to page through the results highlights each in turn, with your chosen system highlight color.

Mobile Safari, on the other hand, highlights only the currently-selected instance of your results. But we can fix that by repurposing an old bookmarklet that was written back before Mobile Safari even had a find-in-page function.

This bookmarklet was designed to add a page search to Safari for iPhone. It works by simply highlighting every occurrence of your search term in yellow. To use this bookmarklet, just visit this iMore page from 2012 and drag it to the bookmarks bar on your Mac. That will make it sync to your iPhone and/or iPad. If you don’t use a Mac, then you can do it the hard way .

The other big advantage of this method is that it is easy to use on iOS without tapping into the share menu. You just tap the bookmarklet in Safari’s bookmarks bar, and a box pops up ready for your to type your search term. It’s way better than the built-in method, which shows Apple at its worst, interface-wise: Functions are hidden to make the design appear simpler, but end up making it much more complex.

Site searches

Did you ever get forced to complete a captcha just to perform a search on your favorite internet forum? No more! Here we have a bonus bookmarklet that works like the one above, only it searches the current site, not just the current page. Just tap (or click — it works on Mac too) the bookmark, type your search term, and you’ll be redirected to a site-specific Google search. I use this bookmarklet many times a day. If I remember correctly, I found the bookmarklet here, on CtrlQ.org , amongst several other useful bookmarklets.

Now, the power users amongst you probably already know a few of these tips, especially the built-in features, but you can bet that you have at least a few friends or family members who are frustrated trying to do these searches. Safari uses Google as its default search engine out of the box, but it's not the only option. You can choose other search engines like Bing, Yahoo, or DuckDuckGo if you prefer them.

While most modern search engines can find the websites you're looking for, there are often ramifications to consider when making your selection. Google is the big player here, but you might want to select something else depending on your privacy stance. For example, DuckDuckGo pushes itself as a more private search engine, while Bing is integrated with Microsoft Rewards . Making the change in Safari on your iPhone or iPad is super simple, so long as you know where to look.

To get started, open the Settings app and tap "Safari."

Next, under the "Search" heading, tap "Search Engine."

Finally, select the search engine that you would like to use as your default when inside Safari. To select a search engine, tap it. You can choose either Google, Yahoo, Bing, Ecosia , or DuckDuckGo .

Sorry---those are the only options. Apple won't let you choose other search engines as your default. You can still navigate to those search engines in Safari and search them from their website, but that's it. The only way you'll get more options here is if Apple adds them in a future version of the iOS operating system.

There is, however, a caveat to consider here. This setting will only change the default search engine that is used when searching from within Safari. If you use Siri or Spotlight to search, they'll still use Google. It's not ideal, but Google pays a considerable amount of money to Apple every year to make this the situation we have to live with, unfortunately.

5 Ways to View Page Source on iPhone or iPad [Inspect]

It is quite easy to view HTML page source code on Windows PC or Mac, but you don’t always hold your computer. For iOS users, you always have your iPhone around. It would be more convenient to view page source on iPhone or iPad. Actually, you can do it without third-party apps.

In this post, I will show you 5 ways to show webpage source code on iOS devices and even inspect elements. Sounds great? Keep reading to learn how. 

Method 1: Create a View Source Shortcut 

The first I recommend is to create a View Source shortcut that is available in Share Sheet, so you can easily access it from Safari. Shortcuts is a stock app in iOS 13 or new versions for automation. There are many amazing pre-made shortcuts that you can get from the internet. 

Here I will show you how to make one to view HTML source code step by step. You can refer to the steps below or the video.  If you don’t want to make it by yourself, you can also click this link to add it to your Shortcuts Library. 

Step 1. Open the Shortcuts on your iPhone or iPad. Tap on the “+” icon to create a new one. 

Step 2. Tap on the three-dot icon and enable the option “Show in Share Sheet”. Tap Done to go back to the new shortcut. 

Step 3. Type “html” in the search bar and drag the “Make HTML from Rich Text” action from the search results to the shortcut.

Step 4. Type “quick look” in the search bar and drag the “Quick Look” action to the shortcut. 

Step 5. Tap “Done” to save the shortcut and change the shortcut name to “View Source”.

Step 6. Go to Safari and open the web page where you want to view the source code. Tap the Safari Share button and select the “View Source” shortcut that you just created. 

Shortcuts only accept Safari web pages, so if you want to view source code on Chrome or other web browsers, keep reading to find other alternative methods. 

Method 2: Safari Bookmark Trick

Another way to view source code is via Safari bookmark. You can use bookmark to run a javascript and it will show the source code of any web page. 

Step 1. Copy the script. You can go to this Github page and copy the script or copy the script below. 

Step 2. Tap your browser (Chrome or Safari) Share button and select Add Bookmark. It doesn’t matter which web page you add. You just need to create a new bookmark for further usage. 

Step 3. Tap on the Bookmark icon and locate the new bookmark that you just created.

Step 4. From there, tap Edit and change the new bookmark name to “View Page Source” and the URL to the script that you copied before. 

Step 5. Go to the webpage where you want to view source code. Tap the Bookmark icon and select the View Page Source bookmark that you just saved. 

Then it will display the source code of that web page. If you use Chrome, it is even simpler because you can change the bookmark URL on Step 2. 

Method 3: DevTools Extension for Safari

If you also need to inspect elements, you can use a Safari extension for iPhone or iPad. There are a few of extensions that allows you to inspeact elements, including DevTools Extension, Web Inspector, and Achoo HTML Viewer & Inspector (Paid).

Let me take DevTools Extension as an example to show you how:

Step 1. Open AppStore and search for “DevToools Extension” or simply click on this link to install it.

Step 2. Once installed, go to Settings Safari > Extensions to enable DevTools Extension.

Step 3. Open Safari and visit any web page that you want to inspect. Tap on the AA icon from the address bar and select DevTools Extension.

Step 4. You will see a gear icon on the page. Tap on it and you will see the Developer Tools like on Desktop browser. When done, you can always click on the gear icon again to close Developer Tools.

Method 4: A Nice Browser That Spports View Source

Unfortunately, Chrome for iOS does not allow viewing page source. Alternatively, You can use Via Browser. It is a nice browser for iPhone and iPad that allows you to view page source and inspect elements.

Via Browser is also available for Android, so you can also use it to view page source on Android . Once you have the browser, you can tap the three bars icon on the bottom right and select Tools > View Source. It will open a new tab with the source code of your current page.

In addition, Via browser enables you to run userscripts and change user agent. As you know, some web apps only works on Desktop. If you use Via browser to change user agent to MacOS or Windows, then you can use Desktop web app on your iPhone or iPad.

Method 5: View Source App for iOS

You can also download a dedicated app for viewing HTML source code. For that, I recommend the free app View Source , which is designed for iPhone. Once you installed this app, you will see an option View Source in your Web Browser (Safari or Chrome) Share Sheet. You can simply tap on it to see the source code. 

In addition, it can also work as a standalone app. Within the app, you can input any webpage URL and the app will load its source code automatically. 

These 5 methods all work great on iOS devices. You can use any of them to view page source on iPhone or iPad based on your preference. For me, I prefer the Shortcuts method because Shortcuts allows you to customize it for all kinds of possibilities.

Safari's Reader mode is improved in iOS 18, even without Apple Intelligence

The new Reader options on iPhone

Apple has announced that Safari 's Reader mode, where all website distractions are removed so that you can read articles more easily, will be getting two specific updates. They are an automatic summary of an article, and also a contents page for longer ones — both done by Apple Intelligence.

There is no Apple Intelligence in the first developer beta of any of Apple's OSes, but Safari's Reader mode has been improved. While AppleInsider will revisit Reader after Apple Intelligence arrives, there are already new benefits to the feature including quicker access to options.

What Reader does in Safari

On a website that chiefly has articles or text on it, you can turn on Safari's Reader mode. This switches to a view of the web page that aimed to provide solely the text and images, no ads or videos, no pop-ups, and so on.

What hasn't changed, and can't, is that this is Safari's best attempt at cutting out distractions for you. Depending on the site, it may fail to work at all, for instance.

Or commonly it will show what appears to be a complete website page, but the site has really split its article up over many more pages.

The Apple Intelligence summary and contents page is going to be an attempt to address some of these issues.

But for now, Apple has made going into Reader mode quicker, and made it easier to customize what you see when you're in it.

What's new in Reader on macOS Sequoia

• Browse to a website in Safari
• Click the new icon to the left in the address bar
• Click on Show Reader from the short pop-up menu

That short menu also includes the ability to change the zoom percentage on text, and to alter some website settings. It's also got the option tofind items on the page, though it's not clear why this is Find where the same function on iPhone and iPad is Search .

Once you've chosen Show Reader , you can click again on that new icon in the address bar. This now gives you a longer drop-down that adds font and page color options.

What's new in Reader on iOS 18 and iPadOS 18

• In Safari for iPhone or iPad, go to any primarily text-based website
• Tap the new icon in the address bar
• Choose Show Reader
• Tap the same address bar icon again
• Use Reader's new controls for font, size, color
• Or use Search within Reader

The font option is a further drop-down list on iPad and iPhone, while as with the Mac , the choice of color is a series of four buttons. There's white, sepia, gray, and black, and tapping on any of those changes the whole look of the page.

Also in this dropdown, there is now a Listen to Page option. Tap that to hear Siri read out all of the text.

Reader search and settings

Search and font size controls are now buttons in the top row of the drop-down menu on the iPhone and iPad. There's also an ellipses icon in that row, which gets you many more options.

Most of those are to do with Safari features, such as adding to favorites. But if you scroll toward the bottom, there is also an option called Use Reader Automatically .

If there is a site that you are forever turning to Reader mode to escape an ad barrage, turn this on. Whenever you visit this site, it will solely show you articles in Reader mode.

Note, though, that it does this with articles. You'll still see the normal view of a page like a news site's headlines one.

The last option that is always available, is Hide Reader . This turns off the feature and returns you to the original view of the site.

There is one more thing, which is only on the iPhone. It's called Manage Extensions, and will allow you to turn on or off an Safari extensions you have installed.

Those could include ad blockers, for instance, which might make a page more readable without going into Reader mode.

All of this sounds like a brute-force way to stop websites being paid by advertisers. When the site is so overloaded with pop-ups that it's hard to read, though, this will help.

It should also help with screen-readers for visually impaired readers.

Plus the forthcoming Apple Intelligence features like summarizing the page will mean you can determine quicker whether this is a site you want to read.

Apple Releases Safari Technology Preview 197 With macOS Sequoia Support

Apple today released a new update for Safari Technology Preview , the experimental browser Apple first introduced in March 2016. Apple designed the ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ to test features that may be introduced into future release versions of Safari.

The current ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ release is compatible with machines macOS Sonoma and the macOS Sequoia beta, the newest version of macOS that Apple is beta testing.

The ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ update is available through the Software Update mechanism in System Preferences or System Settings to anyone who has downloaded the browser . Full release notes for the update are available on the Safari Technology Preview website .

Apple's aim with ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ is to gather feedback from developers and users on its browser development process. ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ can run side-by-side with the existing Safari browser and while designed for developers, it does not require a developer account to download.

Search with Spotlight on iPad

On iPad, you can search for apps and contacts, content in apps like Mail and Messages, and even text in your photos using Live Text. You can check stock and currency information, and find and open webpages, apps, and images in your photo library, across your system, and on the web.

When you search for an app, app shortcuts for your most likely next action appear within the Top Hit. (For example, a shortcut to the Favorites album appears when you search for Photos.)

You can search from anywhere on iPad—even the Lock Screen—and choose which apps you want to include in search results. Search offers suggestions based on your app usage, and updates results as you type.

Scroll down, tap an app, then turn Show App in Search on or off.

Swipe down from the middle of the Home Screen or the Lock Screen.

Enter what you’re looking for in the search field.

Do any of the following:

Initiate your search: Tap Search or Go.

Open a suggested app: Tap the app.

Take quick action: Start a timer, turn on a Focus, find the name of a song with Shazam, run any shortcut, and more. Search for an app’s name to see shortcuts available for the app, or create your own using the Shortcuts app.

Check a suggested website: Tap it.

Get more information about a search suggestion: Tap it, then tap one of the results to open it.

Tap System Services, then turn off Suggestions & Search.

Search in apps

Many apps include a search field or a search button so you can find something within the app. For example, in the Maps app, you can search for a specific location.

If you don’t see a search field or button, swipe down from the top.
