Sainsbury’s reopens travel money service.

sainsbury's travel money hours

Sainsbury’s has announced it is reopening its online travel money service.

As a result, holidaymakers and travellers can now order foreign currency online which can be delivered to their home on the next working day. An automatic currency converter is available on the Sainsbury’s website, allowing you to see exactly how much your sterling is worth before ordering.

Travel bureaux are also starting to reopen within Sainsbury’s stores ahead of the summer. Shoppers can check on the Sainsbury’s Bank website whether the bureau at their local store is one of those reopening now.

Nectar cardholders enjoy better conversion rates on foreign currency, while no commission is charged when cash is changed. What’s more, Sainsbury’s said that if holidays have to be cancelled due to the pandemic, travellers can return the travel money at the exchange rate purchased.

Jason King, customer director at Sainsbury’s bank, said: “We’re delighted to welcome back travel money customers online and to our stores. Whether it’s buying currency for a holiday abroad, selling back any extra from your trip or sending money to friends and family overseas with Western Union, we’re open and ready to support however you like to get your currency.”

Holiday hopes

Millions of us will be dreaming wistfully of the prospect of a proper summer holiday abroad, though there are currently just 12 nations on the government’s ‘green’ list of countries, meaning that no quarantine period is required upon your return.

What’s more, the government has been accused of delivering “mixed messages” over how people should view travelling to countries on the ‘amber’ list, Ministers initially suggested that travel was allowed to these destinations to see family and friends, though the Prime Minister later emphasised that these journeys should be avoided unless they were “essential”.

There have also been reports of holidaymakers ‘hoarding’ bookings, by snapping up spots in British hotels which they can then cancel later on should international travel be possible.

Even if travel overseas is possible, it’s open to question how many Brits will actually want to do it. A study by GoCompare found that only 13% of us are comfortable with the idea of foreign holidays this year.

Supermarket May bank holiday opening times 2024 including Tesco, Aldi, Morrisons and more

Here’s everything you need to know about when supermarkets are open and closed on the early May bank holiday next week on Monday, May 6

  • 15:03, 1 May 2024
  • Updated 00:18, 6 May 2024

The first May bank holiday is right around the corner - so when will supermarkets be open over the bank holiday weekend?

There are two bank holidays in May, the early May and the late May bank holiday, which is also known as the Spring bank holiday. With bank holidays most Brits get to enjoy a three-day weekend - but it also means supermarket opening times may change.

While many will be well prepared for the long weekend, it’s handy to be aware of changes to store opening times should you need to embark on a last-minute supermarket run. Here’s everything you need to know about when supermarkets are open and closed on Monday, May 6.

Tesco stores will be open as normal over the weekend leading up to the early bank holiday on Monday. So on Friday and Saturday, larger stores will be open between 6am and 7am and close between 10pm and midnight. On Sunday stores will only be open for six hours due to Sunday trading laws with most stores opening between 10am and 11am and closing between 4pm and 5pm. Scottish stores will trade for longer on Sunday.

On Monday, the majority of Tesco's larger stores will be open from 8am to 6pm - some of its stores will be open a little later until 8pm. In Scotland , larger Tesco stores will be open from 8am until 8pm on bank holiday Monday while in Norther Ireland it'll be from 7am until 6pm. All Tesco's smaller convenience stores will be open as normal over the whole bank holiday weekend from between 6am and 7am until between 10pm and midnight. You can find your nearest Tesco with the supermarket's locator tool here .

Sainsbury's

Like Tesco, all of Sainsbury's stores will operate under their normal hours over the bank holiday weekend with opening hours only changing on Monday. On Friday (May 3) and Saturday (May 4) Sainsbury’s superstores will open between either 6am or 7am and shut between 10pm or 11pm. On Sunday (May 5) superstores will open from 10am until 4pm or from 11am to 5pm in England and Wales. Sainsbury's convenience stores will open between 6am or 7am and close between 10pm and 11pm - even on Sundays - and this will remain the same in the lead-up to the bank holiday.

On the bank holiday Monday, the majority of Sainsbury's will be open from 8am until 8pm - so roughly two hours earlier than usual. Sainsbury’s Local convenience stores are scheduled to be open from 7am until either 10pm or 11pm this Saturday, Sunday and bank holiday Monday. Scottish Sainsbury's will remain open on Monday under their normal trading times from around 7am until 10pm. You can find your nearest Siansbury's with the supermarket's locator tool here .

Morrisons will be open as normal on Friday May 3, Saturday May 4, and Sunday, May 5. This means stores will be open at either 6am or 7am and close between 10pm and midnight. This includes Morrisons Daily stores which are the chain's convenience store brand. Some are 24 hours, so will be open from midnight to midnight, and others are open from 6am until 11pm or midnight. Morrisons petrol stations will be open from 6:30am until 8:30pm.

On Sundays, larger Morrisons stores in England and Wales open at either 10am and 11am and close between 4pm and 5pm. Morrisons Daily stores will open from 7am until 10pm. On May 6, Morrisons stores will open between 7am and 8am with the majority of stores closing at 8pm - although Morrisons told the Mirror that some stores will open until 10pm. Morrisons petrol stations will also open half an hour earlier and close half an hour later on the bank holiday Monday. You can find your nearest Morrisons with the supermarket's locator tool here .

Asda 's opening will remain the same as normal on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Bigger Asda stores open at either 6am or 7am and close between 10pm and midnight. On Sunday, Asda superstores will open for only six hours from either 10am or 11am, until 4pm or 5pm.

On Monday, May 6, most of the larger Asda stores will be open as usual - this means they could open as early as 6am and close as late as midnight. Scottish Asda stores will open under their usual trading hours over the weekend - opening between 6am and 7am until between 10pm. The chain's smaller convenience stores, Asda Express, are normally open for 24 hours even on Sundays. This seems to be the case over the bank holiday weekend too. You can find your nearest Asda with the supermarket's locator tool here .

Like the other major supermarket chains, Aldi opening times will remain as normal on Saturday and Sunday with hours only changing on the bank holiday itself on Monday. Aldi stores are normally open between 8am and 10pm on Saturday, across England, Wales and Scotland. On Sundays, Aldi is usually open from 10am until 4pm, or 11am until 5pm, in England and Wales - in Scotland they're open from 9am until 8pm.

On the bank holiday Monday, Aldi shops will close slightly earlier than normal. Instead of closing at 10pm, Aldi has confirmed that the majority of shops will shut at 8pm. Again, the exception is in Scotland, where regular 8am until 10pm shopping hours will be in place for most stores. You can find your nearest Aldi with the supermarket's locator tool here .

Lidl will be open as normal over the bank holiday weekend with stores opening at 7am and closing at 10pm on Friday and Saturday. Again like other supermarkets, Lidl will only be open for six hours on Sunday from either 10am or 11am to either 4pm or 5pm. Lidl usually opens 30 minutes earlier on Sundays but for browsing only.

On the bank holiday Monday, Lidl stores appear to be opening later at 8am and will be open until their normal closing time of 10pm. Although this can vary depending on where your local store is based e.g if it's in a shopping centre then it could close earlier. You can find your nearest Lidl with the supermarket's locator tool here .

Waitrose opening hours vary considerably from store to store. According to our research some stores open as early as 7am whilst others don't open until 9am. This is the same with it's closing hours with some shutting shop for the day as early as 5pm and others at late as 10pm. The bank holiday hours does show that some Waitrose stores will be opening under their usual hours and closing an hour or two earlier. You can find your nearest Waitrose with the supermarket's locator tool here .

As with Waitrose, M&S also has a wide variety of opening and closing times across the country. The majority of stores in our research opened between 8am and 9am on Friday and Saturday over this bank holiday weekend. On Sunday, both M&S food halls and stores look as if they are only trading for six hours in England and Wales with opening times being between 10am and 11am and closing between 4pm and 5pm. On the bank holiday, it appears stores will be opening under their normal hours but closing an hour or two earlier depending on where it is. You can find your nearest M&S stores with the retailer's locator tool here .

Just curious...do you not have a generic “ATM” or “debit card” in your home country? If issued by a larger bank, and using a major system like Visa, they should work fine in Russia (if you notify your bank!!!). Using such cards, you will get the best rates possible...set by the global network, NOT Russia or individual banks...and Russian banks do NOT have any add-on fees...(your bank might)...

Thank you for the quick replies. The forex currency card that we could avail is Thomas Cook Mastercard. Does that work in Russia?

> Russia is moving away from what used to be a lot of smaller, independent money exchange offices...

All exchange offices in Russia have had to belong to a bank for at least 20 years. Which doesn't mean they are not 'independent' in setting their rates. There are many offices (and even banks) that specialize in changing currencies and provide very competitive rates as they have large volumes.

> I would suggest one of the top, largest ones, starting with by far the largest, Sberbank, and after this VTB and Alfa Bank

I am just curious, have you ever tried to actually compare the rates between those offered by large banks you mentioned and best rates by the links provided above? Try comparing them for a change, you are in for a surprise.

May bank holiday 2024 opening times — Tesco, Waitrose & Lidl announce plans as shopping hours revealed

  • Louis Allwood , Live Blog Reporter
  • Updated : 10:00, 5 May 2024

THE EARLY May bank holiday is just around the corner and stores across the UK have now revealed their opening hours.

Shopping across the bank holiday will depend on the individual  opening hours  of each  supermarket .

Some individual stores may have different opening and closing hours, so do check before heading out.

Below we outline what  each supermarket  is doing over the bank  holiday .

Read our live blog below for the latest news and updates...

Are newspapers published over early May bank holiday?

Most daily national newspapers are published on every  bank holiday  including the early May holiday.

Papers have continued to publish their papers regardless of the  bank holidays , though some still like to uphold traditions and not sell a copy.

There are some publications, such as the Financial Times, that don't publish on selected bank  holidays . They also don't publish a paper on a Sunday.

It is always worth checking online to clarify if your paper of choice will be printed.

Are doctors open on the early May bank Holiday?

Like most public services,  GP  practices have different opening times over the early May bank Holiday.

As this is a  bank holiday , surgeries will most likely be closed. Some surgeries might operate an out-of-hours service, but these can vary from practice to practice.

If you phone your nearest surgery, the answering machine will give you advice on how to get hold of an out-of-hours doctor.

Many walk-in centres will also be open as normal on the early May bank Holiday.

However they could be busy, meaning you might spend a significant portion of your day waiting in the waiting room. With this in mind, it is always best to call ahead and check the opening times before you travel.

Always check to see if your local practice has shared any information online. Or you can phone up ahead of time.

What are other businesses doing?

Retailers ' opening hours will vary over the bank holiday, so you should check each specific store to avoid a wasted journey.

Most supermarkets and large high street chains have store locators on their website which you can use to find the  opening hours  for your nearest branch.

The opening times of stores generally vary depending on the location and size of the store.

Public transport  timings also vary on  bank holidays , so ensure you check the timetables to avoid any travel troubles.

Wickes early May bank holiday opening times

Wickes  stores are open as usual over the bank holiday weekend.

It means shoppers who are planning a DIY haul can visit as follows:

England and Wales:

  • Saturday, May 4: 7am-7pm
  • Sunday, May 5: 10am-4pm
  • Monday, May 6: 7am-8pm

Screwfix early May bank holiday opening times

Screwfix  is open on most public holidays, including the early May bank holiday.

Most are operating between 7am and 8pm on May 6.

The only exceptions are as follows:

  • Nottingham Bulwell – 8am-6pm
  • Brentford, Clitheroe Barrow and North Walsham – 9am-4pm
  • Ringwood, Ilford, Hornchurch – 10am-4pm

To find your nearest store and its opening hours, the best bet is to use Screwfix's store locator.

Homebase early May bank holiday opening times

Homebase  stores are open on the early May bank holiday, but business hours vary from store to store.

Many are open from 8am on weekdays and Saturdays and from 10am or 11am on Sundays.

Shoppers can use the retailer's store locater to find information regarding local Homebase opening hours.

Ikea early May bank holiday opening times

Ikea's  stores in  England ,  Wales  and  Northern Ireland  will be open as usual on bank holiday Monday.

But it's important to be aware that opening hours can vary.

If you're planning a trip, it's best to find your local store opening times on its website.

Just enter your postcode into its store locator tool to find your nearest branch.

B&Q early May bank holiday opening times

B&Q  shoppers hoping to do some DIY are in luck as stores will be open for usual business hours on the early May bank holiday.

However, opening hours often differ from one branch to another depending on where you are located.

Sites open at either 7am or 8am, and close at 8pm on bank holiday Monday, May 6.

Waitrose early May bank holiday opening times

Most of  Waitrose 's stores will be open over the early May bank holiday, alongside its usual trading hours on Saturday and Sunday.

Some of its smaller stores will have different opening times compared to larger shops, however.

The vast majority of Waitrose shops have shorter opening times on the bank holiday Monday.

A Tesco storefront,

The Early May bank holiday is finally here, promising a day of leisure for many.

Many of us use the extra day off work to catch up with loved ones or tackle a mountain of chores that have been pushed to the side.

Those plans could well be dependent on the weather , but we’ve got our fingers crossed that the rain stays away .

Others might want to hit the shops for a bit of retail therapy before the Monday blues – now shifted to Tuesday – set in, with the likes of Tesco , Aldi and Lidl set to be packed full of shoppers.

But are shops open as normal on May 6? Here’s what you need to know about the supermarket opening hours for the UK bank holiday tomorrow.

Supermarket opening hours on Early May bank holiday

Many supermarkets and shops will be open as normal.

A Sainsbury's Local supermarket in London

Unlike Easter Sunday, where trading laws mean stores over a certain size need to close for the day, this bank holiday has no such laws around it.

However, stores might be operating under different opening hours so employees can finish earlier or start later to enjoy the bank holiday.

Most supermarkets will be open during their normal hours, though shoppers are advised to check with their local branch beforehand.

- Can I move these hours without changing money, simply by credit card or debit card? Or is it better to change rubles?

- I already have the Aeroexpress trip bought in advance online but I will have to buy metro tickets there. Can I buy the tickets with a credit card or debit card? Where is it better in the automatic machines or in the ticket offices? I ask for the same reason.

- If I'm going to do about 3 subway trips in total, is it better to buy the Troika card or better normal tickets?

- My idea is to have lunch at the GUM mall, will not I have problems there to pay with a credit card or debit card, right?

Thank you very much and greatings,

' class=

Sorry cannot help you with the nuts thing, but do not see how eating at GUM makes this easier. I think I saw a while back that someone had a phrase translated and printed out on a small card to hand out to wait staff...

And in any event, would strongly recommend taking a short walk up to Kamergerski Lane...it is a VERY nice area, pedestrian, loads of places to eat, and has wonderful architecture all around...

' class=

>is it common to cook with nuts in Russia?

Thank you! Yes... the truth is that it may not have much relationship ... I may have thought about it because in shopping centers there is a lot of variety of food and easy food in case in the worst case, nobody can assure us anything, but maybe we could value eating somewhere else, yes. And yes, we always carry a written note translated into the local language and with images.

Oh and thanks for the recommendation of the street!

sainsbury's travel money hours

> in shopping centers there is a lot of variety of food

GUM is not that type of a shopping center! It was built in 1893 and now is an upscale gallery of boutique shops with one very expensive restaurant and one relatively inexpensive cafe but if you're looking for a "food court" experience then you won't find it there. If you're looking for a food court (a variety of dirt-cheap self-service fast food stalls), consider going to Okhotny Ryad underground shopping center instead, it's very near.

Oh wow, thanks for the information! Yes, I see that shopping center is very close. Then I will think if we have dinner there or anywhere in the street...

sainsbury's travel money hours

A great eating option food court style is the one at Nikolskaya street, pedestrian area starting at GUM, Vokrug Sveta (Around the World), upscale though...

Vokrug Sveta (Around the World) in not Upscale IMO, nice and not touristy place to eat at Nikolskaya street.

To find best places, simply use google maps. Works great.

ps. Local people don't eat at GUM...

sainsbury's travel money hours

As you're there as a tourist, why not just visit Arbat St, you can either catch the Metro there getting off at Arbatskaya (one of the Metro Stations to visit) getting on at Ploschad' Revolyutsii (another of the recommended Stations) which is just beside the GUM Department Store. Arbat St is closed to traffic and worth a look, with any number of eating options, from Russian Fast Food places like Mu-Mu and Teremok.

Cinco de Mayo 2024 food and drink specials: Deals at Taco Bell, Chipotle, TGI Fridays, more

Cinco de mayo is a day to celebrate mexican-american culture. there's plenty of deals and specials including free and discounted food and drinks, contests – and the rock will pay for your guac..

sainsbury's travel money hours

Some big names in food and drink are getting a head start on this year's Cinco de Mayo celebration. Among them: Chipotle , Taco Bell , and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson 's Teremana tequila .

The holiday, a celebration of Mexican American culture that falls on Sunday, May 5, this year, is popular with most ages.

Millennials (those aged 28 to 43) will be most likely to celebrate the holiday, with 62% planning to, according to retail data firm 84.51° . Nearly half (46%) of Gen Xers (aged 44-59) and more than one-third (35%) of Boomers (60-78) will, its research finds.

Many see the holiday as an excuse to eat Mexican food and sip a margarita or some tequila. They may not know that Cinco de Mayo marks the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, when 2,000 Mexican soldiers defeated 6,000 French troops – and is not to be confused with Mexico's Independence Day. The country's Día de la Independencia, when Mexico broke free from Spanish rule, came on Sept. 16, 1810.

Regardless, margaritas are a likely libation to be downed, with 19% of celebrators expected to have one. Many may make them at home, as weekly lime sales rose 50% last year during Cinco de Mayo at Kroger stores, found 84.51°, which is a subsidiary of the supermarket giant .

Could Trump Go to Prison? If He Does, the Secret Service Goes, Too

Officials have had preliminary discussions about how to protect the former president in the unlikely event that he is jailed for contempt during the trial.

Several men and women wearing dark suits standing around an airport tarmac.

By William K. Rashbaum

The U.S. Secret Service is in the business of protecting the president, whether he’s inside the Oval Office or visiting a foreign war zone.

But protecting a former president in prison? The prospect is unprecedented. That would be the challenge if Donald J. Trump — whom the agency is required by law to protect around the clock — is convicted at his criminal trial in Manhattan and sentenced to serve time.

Even before the trial’s opening statements, the Secret Service was in some measure planning for the extraordinary possibility of a former president behind bars. Prosecutors had asked the judge in the case to remind Mr. Trump that attacks on witnesses and jurors could land him in jail even before a verdict is rendered.

(The judge, who held a hearing Tuesday morning to determine whether Mr. Trump should be held in contempt for violating a gag order, is far more likely to issue a warning or impose a fine before taking the extreme step of jailing the 77-year-old former president. It was not immediately clear when he would issue his ruling.)

Last week, as a result of the prosecution’s request, officials with federal, state and city agencies had an impromptu meeting about how to handle the situation, according to two people with knowledge of the matter.

That behind-the-scenes conversation — involving officials from the Secret Service and other relevant law enforcement agencies — focused only on how to move and protect Mr. Trump if the judge were to order him briefly jailed for contempt in a courthouse holding cell, the people said.

The far more substantial challenge — how to safely incarcerate a former president if the jury convicts him and the judge sentences him to prison rather than home confinement or probation — has yet to be addressed directly, according to some of a dozen current and former city, state and federal officials interviewed for this article.

That’s at least in part because if Mr. Trump is ultimately convicted, a drawn-out and hard-fought series of appeals, possibly all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court, is almost a certainty. That would most likely delay any sentence for months if not longer, said several of the people, who noted that a prison sentence was unlikely.

But the daunting challenge remains. And not just for Secret Service and prison officials, who would face the logistical nightmare of safely incarcerating Mr. Trump, who is also the presumptive Republican nominee for President.

“Obviously, it’s uncharted territory,” said Martin F. Horn, who has worked at the highest levels of New York’s and Pennsylvania’s state prison agencies and served as commissioner of New York City’s correction and probation departments. “Certainly no state prison system has had to deal with this before, and no federal prison has had to either.”

Steven Cheung, the communications director for Mr. Trump’s campaign, said the case against the former president was “so spurious and so weak” that other prosecutors had refused to bring it, and called it “an unprecedented partisan witch hunt.”

“That the Democrat fever dream of incarcerating the nominee of the Republican Party has reached this level exposes their Stalinist roots and displays their utter contempt for American democracy,” he said.

Protecting Mr. Trump in a prison environment would involve keeping him separate from other inmates, as well as screening his food and other personal items, officials said. If he were to be imprisoned, a detail of agents would work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, rotating in and out of the facility, several officials said. While firearms are obviously strictly prohibited in prisons, the agents would nonetheless be armed.

Former corrections officials said there were several New York state prisons and city jails that have been closed or partly closed, leaving wings or large sections of their facilities empty and available. One of those buildings could serve to incarcerate the former president and accommodate his Secret Service protective detail

Anthony Guglielmi, the spokesman for the Secret Service in Washington, declined in a statement to discuss specific “protective operations.” But he said that federal law requires Secret Service agents to protect former presidents, adding that they use state-of-the-art technology, intelligence and tactics to do so.

Thomas J. Mailey, a spokesman for New York State’s prison agency, said his department couldn’t speculate about how it would treat someone who has not yet been sentenced, but that it has a system “to assess and provide for individuals’ medical, mental health and security needs.” Frank Dwyer, a spokesman for the New York City jails agency, said only that “the department would find appropriate housing” for the former president.

The trial in Manhattan, one of four criminal cases pending against Mr. Trump and possibly the only one that will go to a jury before the election, centers on accusations he falsified records to cover up a sex scandal involving a porn star. The former president is charged with 34 counts of felony falsifying business records. If convicted, the judge in the case, Juan M. Merchan, could sentence him to punishments ranging from probation to four years in state prison, though for a first-time offender of Mr. Trump’s age, such a term would be extreme.

If Mr. Trump is convicted, but elected president again, he could not pardon himself because the prosecution was brought by New York State.

Under normal circumstances, any sentence of one year or less, colloquially known as “city time,” would generally be served on New York City’s notorious Rikers Island, home to the Department of Correction’s seven jails. (That’s where Mr. Trump’s former chief financial officer, Allen H. Weisselberg, 76, is currently serving his second five-month sentence for crimes related to his work for his former boss.)

Any sentence of more than a year, known as state time, would generally be served in one of the 44 prisons run by New York State’s Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.

The former president could also be sentenced to a term of probation, raising the bizarre possibility of the former commander in chief reporting regularly to a civil servant at the city’s Probation Department.

He would have to follow the probation officer’s instructions and answer questions about his work and personal life until the term of probation ended. He would also be barred from associating with disreputable people, and if he committed any additional crimes, he could be jailed immediately.
