It falls under the category of ‘common sense’, but in teaching, where time is often in short supply, it bears repeating: allowing adequate time for planning a school trip is essential, as rushed school trips , planned days or weeks before rather than months in advance, will be both a more stressful experience for you as organiser, and at risk of underperforming educationally. 

One of the key findings of Ofsted’s 2008 Learning outside the classroom report was that learning outside the classroom (LOtC) was “most successful when it was an integral element of long-term curriculum planning and closely linked to classroom activities”. 

Gill Harvey, chief executive of the School Travel Forum , says that many school trips don’t get beyond the planning stage because teachers “haven’t gauged parental interest and got approval from the headteacher first.”  

Making an enquiry with school trips venues or providers should be “the last step in the process”, she continues.  

As the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom (CLOtC) highlights in its guidance , “the objectives for [your] visit should be defined carefully and must relate closely to classroom work.” 

In its 2008 report , Ofsted noted that, “Too many residential and other visits […] had learning objectives which were imprecisely defined”.  

When thinking about educational school trips, headteacher Tracey Bowen stresses that its “vital to be clear about why you’re going. What’s your intention? What do you want to get out of it?”. 

She continues: “We spend a phenomenal amount of time planning school trips, checking what the content of a workshop is, explaining what our needs are.” 

It’s important to think carefully about where you choose to go – as Tracey points out: “You can get brochures through and think, ‘Oh, that looks great – we’ll go there!’, but unless you’re careful, you can end up thinking, ‘That’s not what it said on the tin!’.”

More fundamentally, for a successful school trip, your choice of destination should be informed by your learning objectives . 

The CLOtC advises that if your outcomes can be “successfully achieved in the grounds of your school, or within easy access in the local area, then it is unlikely that travelling for hours to reach a more distant venue will enhance the learning experience” – but of course there will be many instances in which an external provider located further afield will be essential. 

Steve Craven, director of NST Travel Group, recommends being flexible with your travel dates, transport options, departure points and accommodation location to get the best price for school trips, and recommends not being afraid to ask for advice on making your financial resources stretch a little further. 

Consider the length of your school trip, too – the longer the trip is, the more expensive it will be. If you’re going on a residential school trip, filling your itinerary with a mix of free and paid-for options will help to keep the cost down.  

When it comes to the cost of transport, Sylvia Holland, a KS4 lead practitioner at Impington Village College and Impington International College who regularly organises MFL school trips abroad, says, “Since Brexit and the pandemic there has been a noticeable increase in the costs of flights, but being flexible with our travel dates has enabled us to benefit from the best prices available.” 

Her school has also benefited from community and charity funding, government grants and school fundraising. She recommends looking into The Turing Scheme . 

Schools usually take pride in offering an array of trips – but that may ring alarm bells for some parents, says Nikki Cunningham-Smith…

According to figures from Gingerbread, a national charity supporting one-parent families, lone-parent families are five times as likely to have an income of less than £200 per week. This makes it very difficult for them to cover the cost of school trips.

The cost-of-living crisis can’t help but loom large in this kind of conversation. And it’s not likely to be going away any time soon.

One demographic it hits particularly hard are, of course, parents of nursery and school-age children. The National Foundation for Educational Research recently found that over the past year, there have been significant increases in the  numbers of pupils requiring additional welfare and financial support . This is simply so they can access basic learning, social and extracurricular provision.

As you’d expect, the financial pressures are greatest in special schools and the most disadvantaged mainstream schools. Special school senior leaders are reporting especially high increases in need for pupil welfare support (from 28% to 36%) and financial support (33% to 43%) over the last year.

Spikes in support

Households are now under strain when paying household bills. This is combined with food costs soaring to their highest point in 45 years. Plus there’s the impact of rising interest rates on mortgage repayments and rents. This has resulted in households everywhere having far less disposable income.

Many more households hence have less in the way of savings. They’re increasingly living pay cheque to pay cheque, affording little wriggle room for unexpected expenses. (Though one thing that hasn’t changed is the threshold for Pupil Premium in light of these developments, in a way that might enable more families to become eligible for it).

Because it’s not just children currently eligible for Pupil Premium who are receiving extra support. In 63% of secondary schools, leaders report that just over half of those pupils receiving additional support from their school weren’t PP-eligible.

The same could be said for around 42% of special schools. This suggests that the current eligibility criteria for free school meals may be too restrictive.

SEN children

One parent of a SEN child once highlighted to me how difficult it can be to access trips due to the additional costs incurred from having a pupil on the SEND register. This is something other parents and teaching staff may not realise.

The example she gave me was having to buy three sets of ear defenders priced at £30 each at the start of a school year. This is one cost that not all parents will face.

Another parent told me how she had previously tried to keep her daughter off school in the week leading up to one trip. This was specifically so that she’d miss the building buzz and excitement, and hence not know the extent to which she’d be missing out because the parent couldn’t afford to pay.

In a post-pandemic climate, where pupil attendance is still giving us significant causes for concern , how can we tackle these anxieties that seem so closely associated with paying for school trips?

Parental finances

One thing we can do is provide parents with clear timetables at the start of the academic year that record proposed trips and upcoming costs. This help with parents’ budgeting.

If your capacity extends to it, you could even look into setting up financial literacy support sessions for any parents needing to improve their ability at budgeting successfully.

Where possible, look to provide a monthly payment system. Here, parents regularly deposit small sums in a dedicated account, before then making withdrawals once a trip has been arranged.

There’s scope to subsidise the trips themselves using Pupil Premium and/or SEND funding. Or you can approach your PTA about supporting funded places.

A good way of getting parents to engage can be to research any local financial support organisations. Share details of these in your school newsletters and parental forums.

The onus is on schools to embed these kinds of practices into their daily routines. If a school can demonstrate that their parents’ financial status is an area they’re sensitive to, this will help build a sense of openness.

Because we all want schools to be places where no child need miss out on exceptional learning experiences – whatever their socioeconomic status.

Support for parents

• Consider helping parents access financial literacy workshops from a local support organisation. Or provide them yourself in after-school sessions
• Ensure that parents feel able to inform you in the event of financial concerns or shocks that might be affecting them and their families
• Engage with charities that might be able to offer financial support to struggling families. Pass on any useful advice or guidance
• Some LAs can provide support with additional school expenses in ‘exceptional circumstances’

The very thought of being responsible for the wellbeing of 30+ unleashed kids can be enough to put teachers off school trips for life, but there has never been more guidance available for those responsible for carrying out risk assessments. 

So what exactly is a school trip risk assessment?

According to the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, a risk assessment is “an essential element of any school trip – not to mention a legal requirement.”  

The DfE’s ‘ Health and safety on educational visits’ resource , which draws upon the work of both the CLOtC and the Outdoor Education Advisers’ Panel (OEAP) , is a useful starting point. 

“If you are the group leader, always be prepared to trust your own judgement”, advises the NEU.

“If you think that to continue an activity or a school trip would compromise the health and safety of the group, you have the authority and responsibility to cancel it. 

“The teacher/group leader is expected to apply the same standard of care as would a ‘reasonable parent’ acting within a range of reasonable responses.” 

If you need help with your risk assessment, each local authority has an outdoor education advisor who is there to help and support you. 

It’s vital that all staff and pupils are fully and correctly insured for your school trip. NEU says that it’s important to “study insurance policies carefully – they should include cover for possible personal liability and ‘third party insurance’ for all responsible adults. 

“Group leaders must ensure that they do nothing to jeopardise their insurance cover. 

“When negligence is alleged, the case will nearly always be taken against the employer, who is vicariously liable and carries insurance for third-party liability. 

“Claims are seldom brought against individuals and, if individual employees are sued, they may bring in their employer as a co-defendant.

“Some employers provide a specific indemnity which protects staff against any liability if a claim is made against them personally.  

“The courts do not rush to find schools and teachers negligent, they accept that accidents do happen. 

“However, schools must demonstrate that they have taken reasonable steps to plan school trips thoroughly and assess and control risks, and individual teachers must demonstrate that their responses to an incident were within the range of the reasonable responses of a parent.” 

It’s easy to underestimate the time and energy needed to organise a school trip, especially if you’re taking a ‘DIY’ approach and arranging all the separate elements yourself.  

Using an accredited provider or tour company gives you financial protection in the form of ABTA or ATOL bonding, but another benefit, as Gill Harvey from School Travel Forum explains, is that reputable tour companies will have “first-hand knowledge of your destination and a good ‘bank’ of suppliers from which to choose appropriate services for your school trip, and can offer 24-hour help and support in the unlikely event that anything should happen – from flight delays to last minute cancellations.” 

Using an accredited provider can save you time when it comes to paperwork and “gives you peace of mind that the elements of the school trip have all been carefully checked on your behalf”, according to Gill. 

Jamie Walls, product development and delivery manager at YHA , recommends looking in particular for the Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC) Quality Badge .

He says: “It’s the only nationally recognised indicator of good quality educational provision and effective risk management.  

“Having this quality standard means the red tape associated with a school trip is reduced.” 

If you can’t quite find what you’re looking for when browsing school trip ideas, don’t be afraid to ask venues for assistance, advises deputy headteacher Grace Shaw. 

Many museums, galleries, zoos and the like are more than willing to be flexible.

Grace says: “Rather than picking off the menu, you can tailor-make what you need. Museums in particular are usually very happy to adapt their offer, because they’re so thrilled to share what they’ve got to share.” 

On school trips where venue staff are taking the lead in guiding students, don’t be tempted to switch off. Grace says: “Some teachers think, ‘I’ll get to my workshop, then the workshop leader will have the children and I’ll get them back at the end.’ 

“Actually, you need to work with staff, because while they’re experts in their field, you’re the expert in your children. You’ve got to develop a partnership.” 

Gill Harvey adds that to maximise the positive impact of your trip and help gain approval from parents and the school to run the trip in the first place, ask your operator how they can support you to promote the learning benefits of the trip to your stakeholders. 

Planning a school trip checklist

The Association of Teachers and Lecturers lays out the following checklist for planning a school trip. 

• Obtain approval from your school and the local authority, if applicable 
• Undertake or obtain a risk assessment
• Detail staffing, supervision and training needs 
• Ensure that the trip is adequately insured 
• Plan transport 
• Obtain written parental consent for medical treatment and brief parents 
• Conduct an exploratory visit 
• Prepare contingency and emergency arrangements 
• Brief staff in preparation for the trip, including responsibilities and emergency arrangements 
• Prepare children for the trip discussing arrangements, expectations and safety 

Making time to head to your destination ahead of the trip proper can help clarify issues as trivial as where you need to park, as well as more important issues relating to health and safety. 

In its National Guidance, the OEAP notes that while accreditations and other sources of information provide essential assurances, “they are not a substitute for a preliminary visit and being able to clarify issues face to face.” 

Jamie Walls from YHA says that by arranging a pre-visit, group leaders can get a feel for the residential destination. “They can also talk to staff, get assistance with any paperwork necessary and see the activities first-hand,” he says.  

If you’re planning a school trip residential, a visit will allow you to assess catering and sleeping arrangements. “Ensure that your groups have dedicated rooms and that the catering is not only offered but of good quality, with any dietary requirements catered for too”, suggests Jamie. 

According to NEU, there’s no precise formula for the ratio of adults required on a school trip. “It’s down to reasonable judgement”, it explains.

“You should take into account the nature of the expedition, and the number, age and aptitudes of the children. School trips which involve hazardous activities require more adults for a group.”

Many venues will state their own ratios for school trips on their website. 

Government guidance on ratios

On its website, the Health and Safety Executive states that pupil to staff ratios for school trips are not prescribed in law. 

It states that “those planning a school trip, on the basis of risk assessment, should decide the ratios, taking into account the activity to be undertaken and the age and maturity of the pupils.” 

Before embarking on your trip, set out your expectations about behaviour and lay out your learning outcomes and how they will be used in the following weeks. 

It’s also important to set out to children what will happen on their school trip – emphasising the times when they’ll need to focus and the opportunities for free time available. 

Giving children a clear idea of what will happen on your trip and when can help to alleviate anxieties about the unknown, according to experts at PAC-UK . 

They propose providing a timetable of the trip, breaking it down into its component elements, the more visual the better. 

Other ways to help anxious children include:

• Looking at images or the website of your destination
• Arranging a pre-visit with a caregiver, if possible
• Giving pupils the chance to discuss any worries with a key person in school

Another important aspect of preparing children for a trip is making sure that they already have a basic knowledge of the topic you’re looking to focus on. 

Teacher Sylvia Holland says that many school trip venues “have a plethora of resources available online that are designed to support learning in the classroom, for use either prior to or after your visit. 

“Use videos to set the scene and excite pupils ahead of their trip or use worksheets to help with follow-up lesson planning and allow them to apply new-found skills.” 

Making the most of a school trip isn’t just about ensuring its smooth-running on the day – the point, after all, is for the visit to have a measurable positive benefit on students’ learning when they return to the classroom. 

As such, it’s equally important to give due consideration to how you plan to continue the learning – in some cases post-visit resources may be available to help you – and to reflect, in partnership with students, on the experience: evaluate its effectiveness in terms of improving educational outcomes, and learn lessons for next time.

Planning a School Trip: Our Step-By-Step Guide

We can probably all agree that to experience learning while out in the world has a big impact. This on-the-spot learning is one of the best ways to ensure that concepts, skills and knowledge are retained. Planning a school trip is one of the most effective ways to introduce experiential learning to your students. A school trip not only cements learning in a way that kids will still be talking about it years later, it also makes that knowledge applicable to real situations. In other words, it turns knowledge that students just have (somewhere, deep down) into knowledge they can use .

But it’s all very well and good to talk about how great school tours are, but how in the world do you actually go about planning one? Where in the world, for that matter? It can seem like an immensely overwhelming task to think about planning a school trip. You might not even know where to start. Luckily, we’re going to make it easier for you. We’ve put together a step-by-step guide to help you get your next (or first!) tour underway.

Step one – the purpose of the school trip

First, you’ll need to figure out the basics. What’s the purpose of this tour? You might already take a particular subject, sport, or activity, which makes determining the focus easy. However, it is worth considering the particular areas you would hope to reinforce or improve upon with this tour. Think about your ideal outcomes, or skills you would like students to gain from this experience. Then it’s time to think about the destination/s, time of year, and duration of the tour. A tip from us here is to be sure to check the academic calendar, assignment periods and school events. It’s definitely worth making sure there are no clashes with other activities or events relevant to students. We have had complications in the past with students dropping out of tours because it clashed with their senior ball!

Step two – choose an educational travel partner

Step three – building your itinerary

We recommend a minimum of one teacher for every ten students.

Step four – get tour approval

Planning a School Trip: What to Consider and How to Plan

Planning a school trip can be daunting, but with the right company and a good checklist it can even be enjoyable follow this guide and you can embrace the excitement of taking your students anywhere in the world., start planning early.

There are numerous things to consider with a school trip, and to ensure the trip runs smoothly it is essential to start planning early on. A year in advance for the majority of trips is plenty, however if you are going further afield then there is no harm in planning around 18 months in advance.

Not only will this reduce the stress surrounding the trip, but it means the teachers and students can get excited about the prospect of the travels without worrying or stressing !

Find a Good Tour Operator

A good tour operator is essential to your school trip. They can make or break the experience, and you want to be able to trust them to get the most out of the trip you can! 

A good tour operator will plan a full itinerary for you based on yours and the students’ needs. This can include taking into consideration the subjects studied, the amount of students and what you want to get out of the trip.

Risk Assessment

A detailed and well thought out risk assessment is essential to planning a school trip. This is when the tour group operator can really help. Operators usually offer 24 hour emergency support throughout the trip, however it is good to ask a few questions to make sure you are with the right operator:

Consider Additional Costs

When you receive a quote from a tour operator, look in depth at what is covered and what is not, for example: meals, entrance costs, travel, ETC. 

By knowing your budget inside and out and what is being spent and where, you will be able to cover unexpected costs that inevitably crop up. 

It is also a good idea to ask your operator about currency. As the exchange rate fluctuates the price of the tour can as well, so it’s good for the operator to buy currency in advance.

Meet in the school car park at 8:00 am . Please arrive on time. We will return to the school at 5:30 pm .

We hope you can come on our school trip next weekend . Unfortunately, the Science and Technology Museum is closed for building work on Saturday, but we have got tickets for St Fagans National History Museum instead. The good news is that entry is free so the trip will now cost £10 each.

Each school planning for trips is as a recreational and educational way, supervised by social workers and school supervisors, who planning visits, ticketing, bus booking, etc.

I went on a school trip to (name of the city) of (Governorate name). of (city area in km) and (population number) approximately.

I prepared my small bag and put sandwiches, juice and water for the trip. I went to sleep early to wake up early to be full of energy on the journey.

We rode the bus in front of the school in the early morning and we left our parents and friends who did not come with us.

The bus driver displayed a documentary about the city we were going to visit and the tour supervisor told us about the directions and instructions we should follow and how to act in case of lost. He provided us emergency numbers and asked us to write them in a paper and keep in our pocket.

We arrived at our destination and started visiting the (museum name) which is a large museum featuring many important items that tell us the history of the city.

Then we went to visit the open museum which is an open area with many beautiful items.

Then we went to visit the important landmarks of the city.

The last stop of the trip was to visit the amusement park, a recreational city with lots of games.

The supervisor gave us two hours to enjoy our time, play the games we want and assemble before the door of the amusement park in preparation for riding the bus and back to our city.

We gathered two hours later in front of the amusement park door, the supervisor checked everyone’s presence and then we boarded the bus and returned to our city.

It was a beautiful day we enjoyed it a lot and we saw many of the city’s famous sights.

We learned a lot about its history and the history of its inhabitants.

Finally, we reached our city late at night. Our families were waiting for us.

We thanked the tour supervisor and went to our homes to sleep and prepare for school the next day.

Mass. State Police recruitment Instagram account posts explicit song with video of high school trip

BOSTON - The I-Team uncovered a posting on a Massachusetts State Police Instagram account that used a song with racial slurs and talked about guns. 

The video shows troopers from the Massachusetts State Police recruitment unit with students from Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School. The caption says they were on a trip to New York City. The rapper Ja Rule's song "New York" is playing in the background. 

The song's lyrics include racial slurs and references to guns, drugs and killing. Released in 2004 it charted on the Billboard Hot 100. Parts of the song were featured on MATROOPER, an official recruiting Instagram account of the Massachusetts State Police. 

The account says, "You can be a part of an elite organization. Join the Mass State Police family" 

The posting was taken down and replaced with another one using the same video but with a song called "Summertime" by DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. 

The video caption says the trip was on Thursday and gave students interested in a career in criminal justice the opportunity to spend time with troopers and go out with the NYPD's marine unit. 

State Police says song "not appropriately vetted"

In a statement Mass State Police told the I-Team:

"On Thursday, May 10, 2024, the Massachusetts State Police Instagram account shared a video to raise awareness about a community program designed to strengthen connections between youth and the MSP. The background song accompanying the video was not appropriately vetted before it was posted. After learning of the error, the Department immediately removed the post, and we apologize for sharing audio with offensive language."

The I-Team also reached out to Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School for comment, but we did not hear back.

At least 11 people have been killed and dozens more injured when a bus carrying high school students on a graduation trip crashed on the Indonesian island of Java.

The bus was carrying more than 60 students and teachers from the town of Depok to Lembang, a popular tourist spot, when it crashed at 6:48pm, local time, on Saturday.

The students had just celebrated their graduation and were on a school trip when the bus suddenly lost control and tilted to the left, crashing into a car and three motorbikes, West Java province police spokesman Jules Abraham Abast said on Sunday.

"Out of the passengers who died, nine of them were students, and one of them was a teacher," Mr Abast said.

The accident also killed one motorcyclist, seriously injured 13 people and caused minor injuries to 40 others, he added.

Local traffic police chief Undang Syarif Hidayat told broadcaster Kompas he suspected the bus's brake malfunctioned before the crash, but Mr Abast said police were still investigating the cause of the accident.

Deadly traffic accidents are common in Indonesia, where vehicles are often old or poorly maintained, and road rules are routinely ignored.

Last month, at least 12 people were killed when a car crashed into a bus and another car on a busy highway in West Java as people travelled to celebrate Eid-al-Fitr with relatives at the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

The duke and duchess of sussex touched down in lagos on sunday for an action-packed day .

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle travelled from Abuja to Lagos on the third and final day of their trip to Nigeria , where the Duchess was sweetly wished a Happy Mother's Day. 

It was an action-packed day for the Sussexes, who headed to a basketball court at Ilupeju Senior Grammar School for a special game. Harry and Meghan were welcomed by ex-NBA star Masai Ujiri, Chairman and President of non-profit organisation Giants of Africa, which travels the continent to run children's basketball camps, building courts, and facilitate outreach initiatives. 

They then had a private meeting with Babjide Sanwo-Olu, the Governor of Lagos State, where they discussed the importance of their work with the Invictus Games in protecting veterans' mental health. 

The day culminated in a fierce battle between Harry and Meghan at the Lagos Polo Club, with the Duchess of Sussex's team emerging victorious.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex visited the prestigious Lagos Polo Club for a special reception in aid of Nigeria Unconquered, where keen polo player Harry no doubt felt perfectly at home.

Following a pre-game parade including young children on foot waving Nigerian flags and older riders on horseback, the game was introduced – a friendly match of Duke vs Duchess teams. 

The couple, who didn't take part in the match themselves, took pride of place in the polo club's top tier to watch the game. They also met with supporters of the organisation helping veterans and wounded soldiers by challenging through adaptive sports.

The game ended 5-3 to the Duchess’s team , much to her delight! 

Prince Harry surprised the crowds after a medal presentation by thanking everyone for their hospitality in an impromptu speech. 

Private meeting with the Governor of Lagos State

On Sunday afternoon, following a quick change at a city centre hotel, the pair enjoyed a  private meeting with Babjide Sanwo-Olu, the Governor of Lagos State .

Meghan looked gorgeous in a long yellow dress with a loose fit. The dress was the very same one worn for Prince Archie's first birthday party in 2020, which fans caught a glimpse of in the couple's Netflix documentary.

She wore her hair pinned up in a chignon and added circular gold pendant earrings and a choker necklace. Harry, meanwhile looked smart in a beige jacket, black tie and matching chinos.

The duchess added a beautiful shawl – a gift from the govenor's wife - worn diagonally across the garment. 

"For Prince Harry this has been a very interesting and very informative trip to the country," Sanwo-Olu said. "He has seen a lot and is still soaking in a whole lot. One of the things we are hoping he will take away, is he sees the diversity and the extent of how big our country is and how we continue to ensure that we live together in peace and harmony."

Sanwo-Olu praised Prince Harry's work with the Invictus Games and around mental health in general.

He said: “We are happy for what they are doing for military men and mental health issues and mental illness," adding that it is essential “people who require the support both in the military and private can seek the support. The denial, the stigmatization is one of the things that we talked about."

Basketball fun

The couple enjoyed a sporty start to the day when they were welcomed on the basketball court at Ilupeju Senior Grammar School  to enjoy a series of street-style dances. 

They appeared in great spirits, gasping and clapping as they watched an acrobatic performance that featured a young boy being thrown between two dancers and the impressive performers forming human towers. 

Looking as stylish as ever, the royal mother-of-two donned a Caroline Herrera shirt over a traditional Nigerian skirt she had been presented as a gift.

After taking in the performances, Harry and Meghan were welcomed by ex-NBA star Masai Ujiri, who is Chairman and President of non-profit organisation Giants of Africa , which travels the continent to run children's basketball camps, building courts, and facilitate outreach initiatives.

 Speaking as the duo unveiled a partnership between the charity and their Archewell Foundation, the former player addressed Meghan and mentioned his own wife as he said: "I want to wish you a Happy, Happy Mother's Day." 

The power of sport

Prince Harry could be seen rising from his seat and applauding the women as the former Toronto Raptors star spoke. 

Ujiri added the heartfelt sentiment: "It is sometimes hard for us to be away from our kids and family to make things like this happen. But to do so shows dedication. To come to something like this and delicate yourself we truly appreciate it so thank you again." 

He continued: "We are inspired by the youth and they will continue to be leaders and they will change Africa. Africa is already changing. We use sports to try to make some more change. It improves peace, it brings people together and brings incredible gatherings like this." 

He then revealed his disappointment at previously missing the 2017 Invictus Games in Toronto, saying: "It broke my heart that I couldn’t be there. Full circle now – I was supposed to meet Prince Harry then and now I meet him in Lagos, Nigeria. Yeah!" 

In response, the Prince put his arms out and called: "Seven years!" 

Ujiri then said of Archewell: "Everything they do is the same thing we want to do in Giants of Africa – which is unite communities and uplift young children and give opportunity. Ours is to through sports. "Let's keep moving, let's keep growing, let's keep showing on this continent. We can do this," he added. 

Harry and Meghan's speeches 

Prince Harry then praised Giants of Africa as he made a speech, saying: "What you guys are doing here at Giants of Africa is truly amazing. 

"Specifically with sport. The power of sport can change lives. It brings people together and creates community and there are no barriers which is the most important thing. It's wonderful to see each and every one of you here today, sitting on this court. I know you're ready to go. And we're going to get those balls going and you're going to show us how good you are." 

Meghan revealed that working on Suits in Toronto was the first time she heard about Giants of Africa, movingly saying: "Talk about full circle again – never did I think we would be able to be here all those years later supporting the expansion of this incredible organisation . We're so grateful and proud of all the work that you're doing." 

She declined to play basketball herself, self-deprecatingly commenting: "Don't tempt me to try to do any basketball, my husband is the athletic one." 

Harry then stepped onto the court and took part in some fun ball-bouncing drills before the couple moved around the court and spoke to some of the wheelchair basketball players.

"You're better than I am," the Duchess told one young player, while she had a hug for Dennis Ogbe, 47, a Paralympian shot putter and discus thrower for Team USA.

Sandra Day O'Connor beats Brophy for second time in 2 days to reach 6A baseball final

Phoenix Sandra Day O'Connor rode a complete-game pitching performance from Cody Stoller and upset No. 2 Brophy Prep 3-1 Saturday to reach the 6A baseball state championship game.

O'Connor came out of the loser's bracket after getting shut out 5-0 by Brophy last week, only to hold the Broncos to just one run on Friday and Saturday.

O'Connor beat Peoria Liberty 2-1 earlier in the week to remain alive, then had to sweep Brophy in back-to-back days to reach the final.

Ky McGary had two hits and RBI to lead the Eagles at the plate.

O'Connor plays No. 1 Queen Creek on Tuesday night at 7:30 at Diablo Stadium to try to win its first state title since 2018, when Nolan Gorman, now with the St. Louis Cardinals, starred for the Eagles. Queen Creek seeks its first state title since 1989, when it was a 2A school.

O'Connor rallies to extend season

Three outs from reaching the state championship game for the first time in 12 years, Phoenix Brophy Prep handed the ball to its all-state closer, Benton Hickman.

But this Phoenix Sandra Day O'Connor baseball team, for the second time in three days, showed a never-die resiliency Friday night, pushing across a run to tie it. Three innings later, they celebrated a 2-1, 10-inning victory that kept its season alive in the 6A double-elimination state tournament.

The same teams meet Saturday at 4 p.m., back at Mesa's Hohokam Stadium, for a spot in Tuesday night's state high school championship game against No. 1 Queen Creek, at 7:30 p.m., at Tempe Diablo Stadium.

Brophy's Jack Lafflam, a 6-foot-6 junior right-hander, made his first start of the tournament Friday and was brilliant through six innings of one-hit ball.

It didn't seem to matter that the Broncos left the bases loaded in each of the first three innings, only getting one run on a passed ball during that stretch, the way Lafflam was pitching. The long rest showed no rust, as he only gave up a triple, leaving that runner stranded in the fourth inning.

As he's done all season, Brophy coach Josh Garcia then went with his closer, Hickman, who recently garnered All-6A honors from the Arizona Baseball Coaches Association.

"One of the biggest things in the postseason is you don't try to change anything or do anything you haven't done before," Garcia said. "The seventh inning has belonged to Benton all year. We want him getting the third out, the last three outs of every game. We're going to go with him again tomorrow. He's the guy we trust."

O'Connor came up with clutch at-bats during that seventh after Hickman easily retired the first two batters in the inning.

Junior Carter Daly singled. Pinch-hitter Aiden Woolwine followed with a two-strike single. Then, No. 8 batter junior James Carr slashed a single to the opposite field with two strikes, scoring the tying run. The dugout erupted. Finally, O'Connor (28-8) broke through after Brophy had shut out its first three opponents in the tournament, handing O'Connor a 5-0 loss a week earlier.

"Before I stepped in, I said, 'God, I know you've got my back,'" Carr said. "I trusted God and let God do the process. I just hit it."

Hickman got through the seventh, before Jack Ohman, another all-state pitcher, worked through the next three innings, giving up a run in the top of the 10th on an error. That was another two-out rally started by O'Connor. The next two batters walked, before an error at short scored the go-ahead run.

"You've got three all-state pitchers on the mound and we're going to fight like heck," O'Connor coach Jeff Baumgartner said. "Those guys are good. You tip your cap to them. You find a way to get on, find a way to get them over, find a way to get them in."

After Ky McGary walked with two outs in the 10th, he stole second, which Baumgartner called "huge."

"That got us in scoring position, and we got a little luck and we scored a run," Baumgartner said.

Left-hander Chris Peronace was clutch on the mound in the final five innings of two-hit, five-strikeout shutout relief for the Eagles. He came on in the sixth, inheriting a runner on first. After walking the first batter he faced, Peronace retired 10 batters in a row before giving up a one-out single to Johnny Casale in the ninth.

With runners on first and second, he struck out pinch-hitter Trey Markham to end the inning.

In the 10th, after giving up a double to No. 9 batter Brandon Wirtz with one out, Peronace got Ohman to fly out, before walking George Smith. No. 3 batter Jack Meissner lined a shot that was caught by the center fielder to end the game.

Brophy stranded 18 base runners in the game.

"In relief, yeah, that was the longest I ever pitched," Peronace said. "Fastball was working. It was moving.

"It's incredible, especially with this group. It's the most fun I've had this year."

Baumgartner said he had 22 players in the dugout and almost used all of them to live for another day.

Earlier in the week, O'Connor trailed Peoria Liberty 1-0 heading into the seventh, before rallying for two runs, including a walk-off walk to stay alive.

"There's a lot of fight with these guys," Baumgartner said. "Our backs are against the wall. We have a little more urgency obviously. But just a testament to our kids. A couple of juniors got big hits. This is cool."

Brophy on Saturday will start left-hander Casale, who shut down the Eagles in the 5-0 win earlier in the tournament with Hickman locking it down in the final two innings.

Queen Creek back in the final

Queen Creek (24-7) ended Chandler Basha's season with a 6-5 win, doing it with small-ball, taking advantage of walks and a balk and getting clutch pitching. It was the second one-run win over Basha by Queen Creek in the tournament. The Bulldogs defeated Basha 2-1 last week.

Friday, Queen Creek built a 6-2 lead, before Basha scored three runs in the sixth inning. Basha outhit Queen Creek 11-4. Basha senior Gavin Smith hit his 12th home run of the season to start the game.

Queen Creek is seeking its first state championship since 1989. Last year, the Bulldogs lost to Chandler Hamilton 3-1 in the state final. Coach Mikel Moreno suspended himself last season to take Queen Creek off probation to allow the team to play in the postseason. He returned this year to lead Queen Creek to a top seed in the playoffs.

Today, the couple started their morning in the West African country’s capital, Abuja, with a visit to a school , which has launched a mental health program led by the nonprofit GEANCO Foundation. At the school, Meghan and Harry were greeted by cheers and a dance by the students—and following some touching speeches, the couple joined the dancing as well. “We’re so honored to be with you. We have got to acknowledge those amazing dance moves! My husband was excited to jump up!” Meghan joked.

This afternoon, Harry will meet injured service members at a military hospital.

On Saturday, Harry and Meghan will attend a training session for charity organization Nigeria: Unconquered, and a reception hosted by the country’s Chief of Defence Staff in honor of military families. That afternoon, the duchess will cohost an event for Women in Leadership with Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, director general of the World Trade Organization.

On Sunday, the duke and duchess will attend a basketball clinic with Giants of Africa, a cultural reception, and a polo fundraiser for Nigeria: Unconquered.

“It is a complete honor to have our first visit to Nigeria. Be here with all of you. We believe in you. We believe in your futures. We believe in your ability to continue to tell your stories and to just be honest with each other. There is no need to suffer in silence,” Meghan said today during the heartwarming school visit.

SPRINGFIELD — Mayor Brandon Johnson said he came to Springfield on Wednesday to fight for equitable education funding and to make sure Chicago receives its fair share of resources.

But there was more geniality than specificity in private meetings with Gov. J.B. Pritzker and legislative leaders just three weeks before a self-imposed May 24 spring session adjournment date.

Democrats were prepared to talk to Johnson about his Monday reference to $1 billion owed to Chicago Public Schools due to years of underfunding under the state’s school funding formula — but the issue wasn’t even broached during a nearly 30-minute meeting with the governor.

And the mayor’s controversial support for a new lakefront Chicago Bears stadium also wasn’t a focal point of the meeting.

Johnson told reporters he reminded Pritzker and legislative leaders that Chicago is the economic engine of the state and deserves its “fair share of resources.

“It’s also to continue to build relationships with the opportunity that we have in this moment, as a state, to really build the type of operation that speaks to equity injustice. This is a unique chance for us to do that,” Johnson said of his trip. “So it’s a level-setting. It’s making sure that we’re building on relationships, but it’s also clear that in order for the state of Illinois to be the great state that it is, that the city of Chicago has to have its fair share of resources.”

Johnson called discussions with the Illinois General Assembly about the Bears “ongoing,” dubbing Soldier Field a “structural damaged situation that really needs a solution.” The Bears last week met with Pritzker aides who highlighted their opposition to the plan. The governor’s office last week called the proposal a “nonstarter” after the meeting.

“And that’s what this is about, providing solutions to a problem … like everything else I’ve inherited,” Johnson said.

It was the Chicago mayor’s first trip to the state capitol since taking office. Johnson also met with Pritzker and legislative leaders in Springfield in April 2023 in a ceremonial visit weeks before he was sworn in.

Johnson defended the timing of his visit — and his late-in-the-game budgetary asks — saying, “We’re at the right time.”

“You know when stuff gets done. So we’re down here at the right time,” Johnson said.

Several members of the Chicago City Council Black Caucus also met privately with Illinois House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch on Wednesday, in what was dubbed an informal city lobbying day. Ald. Jeanette Taylor (20th), the mayor’s hand-picked Education Committee chair, said it marked the first time in five years that members of the caucus had come to Springfield.

“The thing we’ll do next year is we’ll come in January. We come earlier. We get earlier access,” Taylor said. “We can get a lot of those things that we’re looking for.”

Taylor said her requests included funding for infrastructure and investments in education, some narrower than the mayor’s.

“He’s advocating for some of the same things we are, but remember, it’s 50 other folks. It’s just 20 of us as the Black Caucus, and so he’s advocating on the entire city. We have specific asks for the South and West sides,” Taylor said.

“Him coming down is a great thing. Him coming down with us didn’t make or break us because now the other caucuses have to do their due diligence to come down here as well.”

During Johnson’s closed-door meetings, the Illinois Senate Executive Committee quietly cleared an education measure that Johnson and the Chicago Teachers Union had opposed.

The bill was initially intended to stop the Chicago Board of Education from closing, or making any changes to, selective enrollment schools until 2027 when the board will be fully elected. It was a response to a resolution passed by the CPS board that called for a plan to invest in neighborhood schools and move away from school choice.

The measure the Senate committee passed Wednesday cleared the House last month. It included a moratorium on all Chicago school closings until 2027 — and it would also stop the Chicago Board of Education from changing standards of admission for selective enrollment schools. The measure must still clear the full Senate.

Johnson said he has had discussions with lawmakers to amend the measure: “Those amendments are being assessed and analyzed now.”

As for whether he felt snubbed by the Senate’s approval during his visit, the mayor countered that he understood the “process.”

“There’s a process that the General Assembly goes through,” Johnson said. “I understand that process, and we’re going to stick to that process.”
