Roberts Prairie Dog Town is a several mile long expanse of fields that are teeming with adorable prairie dogs. You can drive or walk alongside this portion of the Park to see hundreds of prairie dogs roaming around and bobbing in and out of their holes.

If you are a camper, you’ve got options: Cedar Pass Campground, which has RV sites with electrical hookups, and Sage Creek Campground, which is a primitive spot on the other side of the Park.”

Badlands Frontier Cabins offers cabins that are immaculate and well organized, with super comfortable beds. The staff is very friendly and the location is amazing.

Sitka, Alaska

Sitka is famous for its incredible mountains, copious amounts of wildlife, and incredibly rich history. The final frontier is one of the most wonderful places for retired Americans to visit in the summer. 

Explore Tongass National Forest

The Tongass National Forest is the largest national forest in the United States, and home to wild Pacific salmon, black bears, brown bears, bald eagles, and tons of other animals. 

On this guided nature walk , you’ll pass meadows, waterfalls, and groves, all while keeping an eye out for wildlife. 

Visit the Alaska Raptor Center

So, you’re on the hunt for the best US travel destinations for seniors. You’ve come to the right place. This guide hops from coast to coast, mountain to beach, state park to city, all on the search for the very finest hotspots for vacations in those later years.

It offers a pretty tempting mix of places. We’ve got tried-and-tested holiday mainstays like Hawaii and the Florida Keys, but also lesser-known escapes in less-trodden parts of the country, from the sylvan mountains of Maine in New England to the hippy communes of the Arizonan deserts.

The idea here is that these destinations offer something for a range of different senior travelers. Some are great for simply enjoying the hotels and relaxing. Others tempt with more adventure in the wilds. Let’s begin…

Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone is one of those places you simply have to see in your lifetime. Spread between Montana , Idaho, and Wyoming on the cusp of the Rocky Mountains and the Continental Divide, it’s a mecca for wildlife viewing and nature lovers, encompassing tracts of bison-studded meadows and smoke-belching hot springs alike.

But don’t go thinking that this wild, wild corner of the stars and stripes is impossible to explore. It’s not, really. The whole place is crisscrossed by a neat grid of routes that make for some of the most scenic driving this side of Appalachia. The best of them is the Grand Loop Road, which takes seven hours to complete but whisks you through all the highlights and hidden sites in the park. For something shorter, check the Upper Loop, a 2.5-hour romp through the Mammoth Hot Springs and the iconic Tower Falls.

The other great thing about choosing Yellowstone in older age is that you can benefit from the reduced cost of an America the Beautiful Pass (it’s just $20 for a senior and includes access to ALL US national wildlife refuges and parks). You also shouldn’t be tied to school vacations, when Yellowstone is at its busiest.

It should hardly come as a surprise that Florida figures on our list of the best US travel destinations for seniors. The fabled Sunshine State has long been seen as retiree hotspot numero uno in North America, largely thanks to its clement sub-tropical climate, welcoming senior communities, and array of sparkling beaches. Sounds good, eh?

There are a few spots in Florida that are worth an extra special mention. The most southerly point of the state is the Florida Keys. They’re as close to vacationing in the Caribbean as the contiguous USA gets really, with turtle-filled coral gardens rubbing up to shores speckled with palm trees.

Closer to the heart of the state is The Villages, a collection of retirement communities that comes with freshwater lakes for boating and fishing, and more golf courses than you can shake your seven iron at. Finally, out west, is the beach-threaded town of Sarasota. Grab yourself a week in a villa there to be treated to visions of oat-topped dunes and quartz sands. Lovely.

It’s not hard to see why Sedona is hailed like the Uluru of North America. The town is wedged between such a jaw-dropping medley of soaring hoodoos and table-top mountains that many have come to think of it as a spiritual mecca and meeting point of magnetic fields. But whether that New Age stuff is your scene or not, there’s no doubt that there’s plenty to draw the more active seniors out there…

For one, the hiking is fantastic. Short and manageable trails can take you to see the gleaming red bluffs of Snoopy Rock, while more challenging romps whisk you over the peaks to the Devil’s Bridge and Bear Mountain if you’re feeling up to it. If not, the driving in this corner of AZ is spectacular, taking you through scented pine forests to hidden canyons and fishing spots and hot springs.

On top of all that, Sedona has some of the most luxurious lodge stays in the southwest. Check into one of the fancy, five-star places here and you’ll have hot tubs under the stars, wellness facilities, and plush Western-styled rooms warmed by crackling log fires.

Hawaii is often hailed as the best of all the best US travel destinations for seniors. Why? Well…it’s one of the USA’s rare tropical hotspots. That means sun and plenty of it. You have the location to thank for that – the Aloha State sits a mega 2,300 miles out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean from the edge of southern California.

But it’s not just the sunshine and the warmth that keep the older crowd jetting over. Resort areas like Princeville (on Kauai) and Wailea-Makena (on Maui) have risen to become all-in-one vacation hotspots in the last 50 years. Head to those to find sleek condo hotels with pools and views of the beaches, not to mention access to some of the most celebrated golf courses in the country!

More adventure-hungry seniors also have loads to get stuck into in Hawaii. Leave behind Honolulu and the hotels of Waikiki and you can scale Diamond Head or unravel the dark WWII history at the Arizona Memorial . Back on Kauai and there are unforgettable boat trips to the Na Pali coast or hiking in the Koke’e State Park to get through.

Asheville is the gateway to the Blue Ridge Mountains. But that doesn’t mean you have to come with the walking boots in tow and the drive to complete long sections of the Appalachian Trail. No sir – the culture-brimming town is also a corker of a destination for seniors these days.

The first thing to mention is the iconic Blue Ridge Parkway. That’s the scenic byway to cap all scenic byways. It wiggles for 470 miles through a massive dash of North Carolina and neighboring Virginia. It’s riddled with lookout points and pretty picnic stops, but also enthralling historical sites like the pioneer-era Mabry Mill.

Once you’ve whizzed on back to Asheville itself, you can look forward to a vibrant mountain city that’s got everything from organic farmer’s markets to theatre houses on the menu. For older visitors, we can especially recommend the craft stalls at the Grovewood Village shopping center and the 434-acre North Carolina Arboretum.

Maine – the Pine Tree State, Vacationland – is one of the jewels of New England. It spills into the Atlantic on the northeastern edge of the USA to offer one of the most glorious runs of coastline pretty much anywhere in the country. Back inland, and you have ski slopes in Bethel and quiet state parks with untrodden peaks to explore.

The real highlight here has to be the Acadia National Park. A fragmented mass of islands covered in oak woods and pines, it’s anchored on the salt-washed village of Bar Harbor. From there, you can launch whale watching trips to strike a line from the bucket list. Or simply settle in one of the elegant coast hotels and enjoy endless bouts of New England seafood.

The fall months are especially wonderful up in Maine. People flock from all over to see the changing of the forests, from emerald-green to ochre and orange. The lake region around Limerick and the forested areas of Farmington and Skowhegan are especially fantastic parts of the state for seeing that.

There’s an undeniable romance about central Savannah, a town gilded with Antebellum grandeur and framed by monstrous old oaks draped in moss. They call this one the Hostess City of the South, and it’s the dame of all hostesses if you ask us. The downtown core is a symphony of beautiful parks and babbling fountains, handsome 1800s mansions, and elegant streets lined with BBQ and grits outlets.

The town’s cultural calendar is positively booming. Catch a show at the Savannah Theatre or drop into the Savannah Music Festival to jig to Dixie jazz in the early spring. Hit the vintage shops and vinyl stores of River Street Market. Take a whistlestop tour of the many haunted locations – they say this is the most haunted city in the whole USA!

And when you’re done with the urban enjoyments? Go for the coast. Savannah is plonked just a stone’s throw up the bends of its eponymous river from well-to-do Tybee Island and the Atlantic barrier isles on the GA coast. They’re home to bayous and beaches and old-school piers, along with some of the best seafood buffets this side of Monterey.

There are stacks and stacks of places out there that could make it onto a list of the best US travel destinations for seniors. We’ve had to whittle all those down to just seven picks. What we’re left with is a pretty darn tempting array of places for older-age adventurers. Of course, the beaches of Florida and the tropical reaches of Hawaii are in the mix. But so are less-known parts of New England and historical cities in the south.

With COVID-19 vaccination rates on the rise, it looks like this summer will be safer for travel than the last one. Especially if you and your loved ones are vaccinated, there’s no reason you can’t get out of the house and explore what the country has to offer.

No matter what your budget or style preference, there’s a vacation destination for you. The following senior travel destinations are some of my personal favorites, in addition to those of our staff writers.

1. US National Parks

There’s more than one reason for preserving natural beauty, and one of those is so people can continue to view it, savor it, and, ideally, go back home with a keener, and broader, appreciation of the value of the world around them. The U.S. currently has 59 protected areas. Having taken Amtrak up to Montana’s East Glacier National Park, as well as having driven to the Grand Canyon, this writer can honestly state that, not only was the cost of these comfortable trips surprisingly low but the memories also remain indelible.

From California’s Death Valley to Alaska’s Denali, from Florida’s Everglades to Utah’s Canyonlands –– nature’s offerings are infinite, awe-inspiring, and deeply inspirational. 2. Disney World, Florida

It’s forgivable if the first thing that comes to mind after reading “Disney World” are the sights and sounds of lots of excited children and long lines. With new COVID restrictions in place, however, park attendance is limited, and rigorous safety measures have been put in place, ensuring that guests will have a socially distanced and pleasant experience. True, Disney World does not offer senior discounts on tickets or accommodations, but you may find discounts at other sites like AAA or AARP.

My personal favorite park would have to be Epcot. Older adults, especially, can appreciate the park’s world showcase, which takes you on a culinary and visual journey through 11 different countries, including Mexico, Japan, and Italy. Even if you can’t currently travel the world, Epcot creates as entertaining of a simulation as possible.

3. Sedona, Arizona

When most people think of Arizona, their mind tends to conjure up images of cacti, rattlesnakes, and scorching hot temperatures. Departing from this image is the beautiful town of Sedona, Arizona. Less than a two-hour drive from the Phoenix airport, Sedona is a sightseer’s dream with its beautiful red rock cliffs and rock formations. Oh yeah, and unlike other parts of the state, Sedona’s average summer temperatures rarely exceed 90 degrees.

Some of my favorite activities in Sedona include hiking, bird watching, and Jeep Tours of the geological wonders. Especially for those into yoga and New Age medicine, Sedona has plenty of offerings. Additionally, if you simply want to kick back and relax, Sedona offers many hotels and resorts, and nothing beats taking in the stunning sunset at Cathedral Rock.

Although Alaska is one of the least frequently visited states in the country (possibly due to its distance), there’s no beating the natural wonders of this state. For those inclined towards outdoor activities, Alaska contains 17 national parks. For those who want a more relaxing trip, Anchorage and Juneau offer all the creature comforts you’d expect.

With COVID rates trending downwards, it’s also a great time to book one of the fabulous cruises along the Alaskan coast. They’re a great way to take in the natural wonders while staying in resort-style amenities, not to mention you’ll be enjoying this all in average temperatures around 70 degrees.

5. Pacific Coast Highway, California

If you’ve ever considered hitting the road with your loved ones and exploring the country via RV , then there’s one route I can’t recommend enough: the Pacific Coast Highway. People often call California its own country in and of itself, and if you travel even part of this 600 mile stretch of coastal road, it’s easy to see why.

The Pacific Coast Highway (PCH for short), spans all the way from San Francisco to San Diego, and it’s considered one of the most scenic and beautiful roads in the world. From the glistening fields of wine country down to the surfing villages of southern California, there’s something along this road for everyone.

6. Santa Fe, New Mexico

Long popular with tourists, this senior-friendly city only becomes more so as time goes on. Culturally, there are few cities of this size that could offer more and, thanks to technological advances, the ways to appreciate it also continue to grow. If you want to see the city and the surrounding area from a fresh perspective, then why not engage in the two-and-a-half-hour scavenger hunt from Tour Beaver.

While covering about one-and-three-quarters miles, and using smartphones or tablets, the players are fed clues and puzzles which they solve, while simultaneously exploring the city. If the scavenger hunt idea appeals to you, Santa Fe is only one of many cities that offer them. The Best Months to Travel in the Best Years of Your Life

Your only company on the sand may be a flock of seagulls and a few treasure hunters. There will be no long waits at restaurants. Don’t forget to schedule a boat trip, fishing trip, or for the more adventurous, an evening kayak paddle on the ocean.

All nature lovers must experience the beauty of the northeast’s changing seasons. The vibrant colors of the leaves mixed with a slight chill and warm cider are enough to make anyone giddy to pull out their plaid and travel to Pennsylvania, New York, or Connecticut. Rent a cabin and make a week or weekend of it!

Combine a visit with grandkids and a weekday tour. While the kids are in school, explore the local area. Make a family visit an opportunity to expand your horizons.

"We loved our travel experience on The Bohemian tour! Just a little info first: we ended our tour in Vienna because we had purchased round trip airfare. If we had to do it again, we would have preferred to end our tour in Budapest. In Vienna: we enjoyed the fun dinner at the country mansion with strolling musicians. After the dinner- We especially the evening musical performance in a beautiful palace! It was the perfect thing to do while in Vienna! The city is beautiful and our visit to Schonbrunn palace was very nice. I really wished that Hofburg Palace had been included in the tour - that would have been a wonderful addition. The dancing in the dark waltz lesson could have been excluded. We would have been happy to skip that part. Our visit to the little fairy tale village of Cesky Krumlov was great. We enjoyed lunch there in a little restaurant by the river. Our time in Prague was a huge favorite & such a beautiful city. The Prague by night cruise on the Vltava river was so lovely. We thoroughly enjoyed the Folklore dinner & show. The tour of the Franz Liszt music Academy was wonderful.- what a gorgeous building & the flute soloist was amazing. We enjoyed walking in the old town. We wished we could have visited both Prague castle and the Jewish quarter, But we had to choose just one, so We opted for the tour of the Jewish quarter and enjoyed it. We were so interested in the history and stories of this part of the city. In Poland, Our visit to Auschwitz was very impactful and heart wrenching. But we felt that it was so important to honor those who died there & resolve that this will never be allowed to happen again. Our visit to Krakow was wonderful- we especially enjoyed visiting the Salt Mine- it was fascinating & the huge chapel was beautiful. The old town was so pretty. Budapest was fabulous- such a beautiful city. Our dinner cruise on the Danube was one of my very favorite experiences. The food was delicious and the city by night was magical. The Parliament building was exquisite. The next day we took the optional tour of the Parliament building inside & it was so beautiful. Then we visited the Iron shoes Holocaust memorial on the banks of the Danube. It was so moving - a very meaningful memorial to the **** of Budapest. The Celebration dinner was wonderful and the restaurant Parisian where it was held was fabulous. So beautiful inside & the food was delicious. Our travel director Calvin was awesome and paid attention to every guest & every detail. We had an amazing time."

Whether you have a senior in high school or college, graduation is something to be celebrated! Some may want a party, a car, or help with their college tuition, but many would love to celebrate this accomplishment with a dream trip. As the school year begins its rapid roll toward the inevitable end of an era, it is time to start thinking about graduation trip ideas.

A grad trip serves the double purpose of celebrating the completion of this phase of schooling and an enticement for those fledglings to return to the nest from time to time. We put together a list of options for my high school senior to choose from and for those of you looking for high school graduation trip ideas, college graduation trip ideas, or senior trip ideas, I have some great suggestions for you!

The thing to consider though when planning a high school or college graduation trip is that while you may want it to be a bucket list experience or a trip of a lifetime; if you really want to take a trip right after graduation in May or June, you need to keep the season in mind.

Summer is the high season for family travel, which means crowds, peak pricing, and a need for advance planning. If you can travel in early to mid-June, you can avoid the high peak that starts in early July as European schools let out for the summer.

It is also an ideal time to visit destinations in the Northern Hemisphere, but Southern Hemisphere destinations vary in attractiveness from June-August as they experience their winter months. So forget the idea of seeing penguins in Antarctica and it may not be ideal for hiking in Patagonia or New Zealand either unless you want to wait for Christmas break. But there are still so many fantastic destinations to choose from.

15 U.S. Graduation Trip Ideas

Even if you have traveled extensively in the United States, there are still so many destinations and experiences that can make a graduation trip truly special. Here are a few that particularly shine in June.

The exotic allure of the Aloha State may be the perfect balm after a stressful senior year. The Big Island of Hawaii is the only place in the United States to see a live volcano, while Maui is the perfect place for adventure activities like sunrise cycling down a volcanic crater or driving the road to Hana.

Just keep in mind that June through November is technically hurricane season, although big storms are rare. We visited in late June and had pretty great weather, with just some rainstorms that delivered beautiful rainbows. Find out how much a family trip to Hawaii costs .

Summer is the best time to visit Alaska. An Alaskan cruise is definitely a great way to see the most popular ports in Alaska, but to get a real sense of this vast and rugged state, you need to spend some time on land too (and not just on excursions .) You can experience calving glaciers, search for wildlife, and experience the brilliance of the Midnight Sun in the Last Frontier.

Yosemite National Park, California

Glacier National Park, Montana

Glacier National Park is one of the most popular destinations in the U.S. National Parks system and getting a reservation in the summer can be challenging. But head to Glacier Country in early summer to beat the crowds and get better rates. Just keep in mind that there will still be snow on the ground, and it is likely that parts of the Going-to-the-Sun road that connect the parts of the park will still be closed until sometime in July, although I was there in mid-June last year and it was open.

But there is still plenty of hiking and wildlife viewing to enjoy (plus a chance to see glaciers!). After a few days in the park, you can enjoy some fun adventures near Glacier or relax at Flathead Lake Lodge, an all-inclusive dude ranch , or spend time exploring more of Western Montana .

Walt Disney World, Florida

From weddings to birthdays, every special occasion is a good fit for a trip to Disney for lovers of magic and the mouse. It might be the perfect time to splurge on a VIP tour to make the trip extra special.

While there are plenty of rides at Disney that teens love, thrill-seekers will also like adding on a few days at Universal or some of the water parks , especially for those hot June days. And when it rains, try some of these nearby Orlando attractions .

Grand Canyon, Arizona

There are two huge downsides to visiting the Grand Canyon in the summer — the crowds and the heat. But, if you go in June it is a little more manageable, especially if you go to the less-visited North Rim, which doesn’t even open until mid-May.

To make the trip extra special, and thrilling, you can arrange for helicopter flights over the canyon, mule rides or hikes into the canyon, or multi-day float trips along the Colorado River. You can also make this part of an epic southwest road trip .

New York, New York

Bright lights, big city — if your graduate has never visited the Big Apple, a visit to New York City can make a great graduation trip. Get tickets for the must-see Broadway show. Visit museums. Take a food tour. Go shopping. Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. The possibilities are endless in the city that never sleeps.

Make sure you fit in some of the newer attractions like Hudson Yards, Summit at One Vanderbilt, Little Island @ Pier 55, the 9/11 Memorial, the Highline, or even try the new Edge NYC Skydeck. Teens also love Instagramable food stops like rainbow bagels, taiyakis, specialty cupcakes, crazy milkshakes, and more.

Las Vegas, Nevada

College grads may enjoy exercising some of their new liberties in Las Vegas, but even high school graduates can enjoy under-21 attractions. The hotels along Vegas’ famous Strip are a spectacle in and of itself. Add to that one-of-a-kind entertainment, celebrity chef-owned restaurants, and thrills like the X-Scream ride at the Stratosphere Hotel, FlyOver Las Vegas , or the SkyJump off the Stratosphere Tower.

Of course outside of Las Vegas, you can also go hiking in Red Rock Canyon, visit Hoover Dam, or drive a luxury sports car or race car.

California Coast

Rent a convertible and take your grad on a classic U.S. road trip down the California coast . Start off with a few days in San Francisco , then head down to Monterey and Carmel-by-the-Sea . Next, take your time exploring the beautiful coastline along Highway 1 down to Big Sur.

On the central coast, you can ride on the sand dunes, zip line through a winery, and enjoy all the small beach towns on your way to Los Angeles . Finish off with surf lessons in Huntington Beach, a tour of Universal Studios, or a day at Disneyland. If you have a college grad you can even add on a few days in Sonoma or Paso Robles for wine tasting.

Puerto Rico

Craving an island vacation? You don’t need a passport to visit Puerto Rico. There you can enjoy gorgeous beaches, the El Yunque rainforest, outdoor adventures, and soak up the history in Old San Juan.

In Vieques and elsewhere on the island, you can even experience the magic of bioluminescence with a nighttime kayaking excursion.

Utah’s Mighty 5 National Parks

Things are starting to heat up in the southwest in June, but you can still fit in an epic trip to all five of Utah’s national parks — Arches, Zion, Bryce, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef National Parks. Or, if you really enjoy hiking and getting off the beaten path, focus on just a couple of the parks. If you are visiting two parks or more, be sure to invest in the National Parks Pass .

Start off in Salt Lake City and then head to Moab to explore Arches and Canyonlands. Next, head over to Capitol Reef and Bryce. Finish up in St. George and Zion National Park. You can then fly out of Las Vegas or loop back up to Salt Lake City. Maine Windjammer Cruise

Large ship cruising may not be your cup of tea, but there are other small ship possibilities available. If your student loves sailing, then a trip aboard one of the Maine Windjammer cruises will be right up their alley. Enjoy gourmet meals and lobster bakes on the beach. Assist the crew and enjoy watching the scenic coastline glide by. Explore the rugged coastline and small seaside towns of the Maine coast .

For a real splurge, book cabins with your friends and family for a group vacation on the sea. Pair it up with a Coastal Maine road trip or a fun glamping stay near Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park .

Key West, Florida

One of my favorite east coast road trips is along the Overseas Highway in the Florida Keys . This scenic trip is great for graduates that love water sports — like windsurfing, snorkeling, kayaking, and scuba diving.

It is also a perfect spot for future marine biologists to visit a sea turtle hospital, explore marine preserves, study dolphins, and enjoy nature up close. Of course, all the key lime pie is also a great perk!

New Orleans, Louisiana

Your foodie teen will enjoy a trip to the Big Easy for a food and music extravaganza. Enjoy food tours, cooking classes, and everything from celebrity-chef restaurants to the best of diners, drive-ins, and dives.

Then soak in the culture with history tours (or ghost tours), a visit to Mardi Gras World, and plenty of live jazz music. If you have time to get out of town, be sure to try an airboat tour!

Black Hills, South Dakota

There are tons of ways for teens and young adults to seek adventure in the Black Hills . You can bike along the Mickelson Trail, one of the old rail trails that runs for 108.8 miles from Edgemont to Deadwood. Don’t worry, you don’t need to bike the whole thing. Instead, you can rent bikes and arrange for shuttle pick-ups and drop-offs to only bike as far as you choose. There is also go rock climbing, horseback riding, and enjoy amazing wildlife viewing in Custer State Park.

Be sure to leave extra days for side ventures to Devil’s Tower in Wyoming and the stunning Badlands National Park . And even if they haven’t had enough of learning for a while, make sure to visit Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, and the Minuteman Missile Silo Historic Site.

15 International Graduation Trip Ideas

There are so many bucket list destinations that are great places to visit in June for a graduation trip. Here are a few options for adventure seekers, outdoor lovers, cultural explorers, and wildlife lovers.

June is my absolute favorite time to visit Iceland, especially if you can be there for the Summer Solstice. Just be aware that many businesses and attractions are closed on June 17th for Iceland Independence Day. The weather is starting to warm up and you have full days of sunlight to explore.

Iceland is the perfect spot for outdoor adventurers. Spend a few days on the gorgeous South Coast chasing waterfalls, visiting black sand beaches, hiking on glaciers, and sailing between the icebergs. It took us until my daughter was in college to finally get to Japan, but this bucket list destination is perfect for a graduation trip. Immersing yourselves in a new culture is great practice for the new challenges that lie ahead for your grad. While things will be heating up in June and you can expect some rain, your grad will love exploring the food, shopping, and cultural quirkiness that lies side-by-side with ancient shrines and temples.

If you can spend two weeks in Japan , it would be ideal for getting to see Tokyo , Kyoto , and Osaka , with time for a day trip or two as well.

With a drinking age of 18, graduates might enjoy some newfound freedoms in the pubs of Ireland — after all, what better place to soak in the Irish culture? Start off in Dublin , and then head off to Northern Ireland and the Coastal Causeway .

Azores, Portugal

Natural beauty abounds in the Azores , the archipelago of Portuguese islands in the Atlantic. In June, big hydrangea blooms decorate the island in a mix of pinks, purples, and blues. This is a perfect setting for outdoor lovers, particularly on the island of Pico, home to the Mount Pico volcano. For adventure seekers, you can go coasteering, canyoning, hiking, surfing, and more on the largest island of São Miguel .

Finish up with a few days on the mainland enjoying the colorful festivals taking place in Lisbon or Porto . The Azores are a great destination for the grad that likes to do something different than everyone else and its blend of the best of Hawaii, Iceland, and Ireland make it truly unique.

A week or two spent island hopping in the Cyclades is a perfect way to chill out after the exhaustion of final exams. Mid-June through mid-July is the perfect time to visit. The islands of Santorini and Mykonos are jammed in the summer, especially once the cruise ships start coming to port, but you can still avoid crowds on smaller islands like Naxos or spread out on Crete . The weather is warm but not scorching hot, and the daytime winds are not as strong as later in the summer.

Start off in Mykonos or Santorini for an introduction to the Greek Islands’ party scene, and then spend some time at some of the quieter islands, like Naxos, Paros, Crete, or some of the off-the-beaten-track islands. Like much of Europe, Italy is beautiful in early June, before the heat and tourists descend. You will want to hit the highlights in Rome and Florence , but then take some time to relax and enjoy the Tuscan countryside where you can bike through vineyards and swim in thermal pools.

You may even be able to arrange to test drive a Ferrari or sample the culinary delights in Bologna or Parma on your way to Venice . Finish up with some hiking in the Italian Dolomites. In June you are guaranteed sunny days and warm evenings in the mountains, with not too much humidity. After a day of hiking or biking, enjoy the local culinary delicacies over lunch at a mountain rifugio or a slopeside picnic.

If your grad prefers lazing on the beach, skip the gondolas and mountains and head down to the Amalfi Coast or the gorgeous island of Capri . Just make your reservations early and don’t be surprised to be rubbing elbows with newlyweds and retirees.

History buffs (and Game of Thrones fans) will love the medieval city of Dubrovnik on the Dalmatian Coast. June is the perfect time to explore before the peak summer crowds and cruise ships arrive in July and August. 

To escape the crowds, the best way to explore Croatia is by boat. Charter a sailboat and head out on the Adriatic Sea to nearby Lokrum Island or further to Korcula, one of the more charming islands in Croatia. There are also adventure activities for active teens such as biking trips, hiking, and water sports.

Switzerland

Your young adventurer may enjoy hiking in the Swiss Alps after graduation. It can still be rainy in May and early June, or snowy at higher altitudes, so shoot for late June or even early July. There are many routes for hut-to-hut (or hotel-to-hotel) hiking. Or you can settle in near Interlaken and soak in the scenery and outdoor adventures.

Interlaken is home to many extreme sports, including mountaineering, bungee jumping, zorbing, skiing, snowboarding, paragliding, helicopter skydiving, white water rafting, canyoning, ice climbing, rock climbing, trekking, and so much more.

Art lovers will also want to check out the international art show at Art Basel in Basel, Switzerland, which draws top artists from around the world. In Basel, you can also bike to three countries in one day! Bike to France and have a croissant, have a beer and lunch in Germany, and return to Switzerland and float down the river before dinner.

The weather in Paris in June is perfect, the cherry blossoms are in bloom, and there are long days of sunshine to explore the city at its most romantic. Of course, summer is also when the tourists descend so it is critical to go in June (the earlier the better) before school lets out for summer in France and the United Kingdom.

Even so, it is important to book early for prime locations (see my guide for renting an apartment in Paris ) and attractions (reservations and/or timed entry tickets are needed for many attractions, including the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower.)

It is also a city where you can give your teen a little independence to practice language skills and prepare to go out on their own. South Africa

June to August is winter in South Africa, but it is also the ideal time to book a safari in Kruger or other parks. The game viewing is ideal because the bush is less dense, but the beautiful golden grasses capture the light and provide excellent photo opportunities. Plus, the dry weather typically means few to no mosquitos!

While June is typically the rainy season in Cape Town, it has a little bit of everything, which makes it the perfect destination for a graduation trip. The city is surrounded by beaches and mountains, with plenty of opportunities for adventure from cage-diving with sharks to zip-lining through mountains and forests. Your graduate can also snorkel with seals or go sea kayaking with penguins. There is also the potential to see whales along South Africa’s Whale Coast between June and November.

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Watching The Great Migration in Serengeti National Park is an unforgettable experience, and June is a great time to see it. In the Western Corridor area, you can find herds of wildebeest, gazelles, and zebras as they make their way north in search of food, water, and breeding grounds.

Because June falls within Serengeti’s dry season, you’ll find less foliage, making animals easier to spot, as well as fewer mosquitos. The temperature is moderate and pleasant during the day, but chilly for early morning safaris or nights in the safari tents. This is truly a bucket list experience for families.

Great Barrier Reef, Australia

While technically winter, the weather is never too terribly cold in Australia and you will find good deals on flights and hotels. It is also a perfect time to see the Great Barrier Reef. There is very little rain so diving conditions are at their peak — perfect for checking scuba diving off a bucket list.

Beyond the Reef, northern Queensland, the Northern Territory, and northern Western Australia are at their best in June. Remember, the further south you go, the colder it will be.

If a tropical escape is what your student needs to relax, set your sights a bit further than the Caribbean all the way to the South Pacific. It is also technically winter in Fiji in June, but the temps never get too cold and you can just miss the summer rush that starts in July. June is one of the best months to visit Fiji, with ideal weather, countless activity options, cheaper hotel rates, and smaller crowds.

From the rich Fijian culture to the incredible beaches, there are countless reasons why Fiji’s 333 islands are the perfect vacation destination for a graduation trip.

Single and keen to mingle?

Our trips can be great for singles over 50 and 60 as we take care of safety, logistics and transport so you can focus your time on the joy of travel. We don’t offer the classic ‘singles-only’ tours, but we do provide the perfect base for people looking to get to know others, usually a varied mix of ages, nationalities, cultures and more. Since our tours are so diverse, this could mean you’re on a trip with couples in their 40s, singles in their 20s, family groups or people traveling on their own in their fifties and beyond. Our tours aren’t specifically designed for making perfect matches, but hey, if it happens, it  happens .

Small numbers, big sites

The best part of traveling in a small group is the friends you can make in the most unlikely of places – we’re talking while hiking the Inca Trail or cooking dhal in  Sri Lanka . It also means a bunch of new faces to share the world’s most epic experiences with and a few people around to watch your back (especially when walking through a traffic crossing in Vietnam ). No matter who you’re sharing your tour with, you’ll be docking at unbelievable sites, meeting local people and getting a one-of-a-kind journey - single or not, we think that's pretty epic.

Safety and logistics

Traveling solo at any age can feel like a big deal, especially when venturing to far-off places. That’s why small group tours are the perfect fit, no matter if you’re traveling alone at 25 or 65. We’ll do the planning, manage the itinerary, handle the transport and keep safety in mind - all so you can immerse yourself to the max. Not to mention, your guide will be able to support you with potential language barriers, give recommendations, show you the best spots for photos and so much more. Don’t just take our word for it, find out for yourself.

Local knowledge and unique perspectives

Maybe you’ve already seen the big sites and now looking for a different experience or new perspective. That’s where we come in. Our tours are led by our Local Leaders, all of whom are experts in their corner of the world and are out there showing it to others right now. Their knowledge of their country’s attractions, delicacies, cultures and communities is something you probably won’t get to experience elsewhere. Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip as a senior.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Who are Intrepid travelers?

Intrepid adventures are for travelers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're traveling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers. 

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over. 

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travelers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website. 

I’m traveling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travelers join because they are traveling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognizing that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport. 

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travelers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travelers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by traveling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re traveling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you. 

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organized on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you. 

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travelers with another traveler of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you. 

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information. 

How does group time work?

Whether you’re traveling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you. 

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travelers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

I assume you or some other adult is accompanying them?

Would the adult be willing to drive at least part of the trip?

Do you have the budget to include a bear-viewing tour? Depending where it's done, that can be anywhere from $500 to $1200+++. Though likely the less expensive ones will already be booked up...very popular experiences.

As for cruises : with Alaska , the most important factor is itinerary. Does the ship go to ports you'd most like to see, and which glacier(s) do you want to see? Or are you looking for a "party" ship?

For animals some good excursions

Juneau - whale watching

Skagway - take the fast ferry to Haines and then do the river cruise - we saw bears, moose, eagles, and more

Ketchikan - we went to a fishing lodge and got to feed and pet pet deer.

so just some ideas. The teens we saw on our cruise ship had a great time.....

Since you are planning for this summer.......try to book sometime in August......that would be the best time to see bears......

As mentioned by mini, whale watching is great in Juneau , but also in Icy Straight if you are ported there.....

A cruise can provide a lot of things to do to keep your teens busy and interested, but I have to agree with Maple.......after being with so many people on a cruise for a week, the land tour that the ships provide at the end of the cruise makes you feel like your being herded around like cattle.......not just kids or teens but even adults can feel totally bored on those trains and bus rides.......

We often see this group in town..... https://www.rubyrange.com/book/alaska-guided-tours/ mostly young people, not a cruise , but smaller guided van trips....you might want to consider something like that instead of a cruise /land tour.......

Are your kids girls or boys? They might try the meet-and-greet if there is one for 18-21 on your ship, but again, I've read first-hand comments of parents whose kids didn't find anyone there they wanted to continue spending time with. Others had a great time with a new friend. No way to know in advance. If there is a meet-and-greet on your ship for 18-21, encourage your kids to attend, and play it by ear from there.

And a word of caution: just because it's a ship activity doesn't mean they won't meet up with a predator, so Mom needs to keep on top of what is going on. I don't suppose I have to tell you what is the most common crime on board cruise ships....

Your kids are old enough to help with the research about activities for 18+ on ships, so let them do the work. After all, they are the ones who know what activities would be of interest to them. For example: maybe they've love to try a Rock Climbing Wall, or a Go-Kart track, or play tennis...if so, they can figure out which ships would have those.

When in July? Going to Haines in early/mid July doesn't give a good chance of seeing bears at Chilkoot River. After mid-July is when those tours start running. Even then, bears are never guaranteed. If you want a better chance without going on an actual bear-viewing tour, as Mombear said, you could duplicate the Haines trip yourself by taking the Haines/Skagway fast ferry, renting a car in Haines (if there are any left--if there aren't, that sort of decides the matter) and driving 10 miles to to Chilkoot River. Then you could stay several hours instead of just 1.5 to 2 hrs. that the tours allot for that area. But--not before mid-July. Pushing it into August gives the best chance as Mombear said--and she should know, she lives there!

If a bear tour is of interest (you didn't say), you could see if any of the tours out of Ketchikan still have room. Try Island Wings.

I would not go to a fishing lodge just to pet deer, but to each his/her own.

As for the land tour: Mombear gave good info on that too. I've been on one and it was so inferior to trips I planned myself. So if you don't want to drive, maybe just spend a day or 2 in Anchorage , plus a couple of days in Seward as was suggested by mjyocum. Though that is far better done via car so you can make numerous stops en route, takes 2.5 to 3 hrs. Very scenic.

There are land tours available other than what the ships offer, but you still haven't given us any idea what your family would enjoy seeing/doing.

14 Best Senior-friendly Travel Groups

These senior-friendly travel companies offer tours and travel experiences as diverse as their clients.

The benefits of travel, whether it's a refreshing weekend getaway or a month-long trip to a new destination, are undeniable. And for retirees and seniors who have time and a travel budget, the opportunities are nearly endless — their own city, state, country, and even the whole world are all waiting to be explored.

It should be recognized that seniors are as diverse as any other generation, perhaps even more so as their years of experience have taken them in many directions. While their interests, abilities, values, and habits may vary, it can safely be said that for many, travel is in their plans.

Seniors travel to visit family, learn about the countries of their ancestors , or explore new destinations. Many seek immersive experiences, educational opportunities, or adventure. And travel companies are responding to their needs and wishes by offering tour options ranging from independent to fully guided, budget to luxury, and group to individual. The 14 organizations listed below are either aimed specifically at mature clients or feature experiences that are flexible enough to accommodate a variety of travelers.

Walking the World

Operating out of Grand Junction, Colorado, Walking the World offers walking and hiking tours mainly for travelers over the age of 50 who want to be immersed in the destinations they choose. Experienced hikers will enjoy its Rocky Mountain National Park tour , for example, with treks of up to 10 miles on some days during the eight-day itinerary. Meanwhile, the Ireland trip covers 11 days of exploring fishing villages, rolling green hills, the stunning Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula, and Killarney National Park. Daily walks range from four to eight miles and are described as gentle to moderate.

Road Scholar

Originally launched as Elderhostel in 1975, the company rebranded in 2010 as Road Scholar , recognizing the values and interests of lifelong learners who have participated in their lectures, tours, field trips, and educational experiences over the years. Participants are typically over the age of 50 and ready to learn from travel or focus on a specific interest. Coming in at first place on this list is Sky Ridge Yurts. Located at 200 Sky Ridge Drive in Bryson City, Sky Ridge Yurts has eight structures available for booking. 10Best praised the three-person Santeelah and six-person Fontana, and mentioned the cooking areas, full baths, heating and air conditioning available in each that make the yurts a true glamping experience.

Two WNC options made the 2024 10Best list of best roadside motels. First was the Sunset Motel at third place. Located at 523 S Broad St. in Brevard, the motel has a wide range of rooms including a separate cottage on the property available to reserve. Rooms feature midcentury modern themes.

Rhodes Motor Lodge was the other WNC choice on the list, coming in at seventh place. The lodge at 1377 Blowing Rock Road in Boone features two stories of rooms all facing the Blue Ridge Mountains. In fact, the views were among the specific features praised by 10Best. Their house bar and restaurant, Canteen, serves homestyle meals and a rotating selection of local craft beer and ciders, plus wine and cocktails.

Best national park lodge 2024

Pisgah Inn, located at 408 Blue Ridge Parkway near Canton, was sixth on the list. The inn, located on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Pisgah National Forest, has a rich history beginning in 1919, when it first opened, and is one of only two remaining park lodges on the 469 miles of the parkway.

At an elevation of 5,000 feet, Pisgah Inn features views of the forested mountains and plenty of nearby hiking trails. 10Best also mentioned the quality of the meals served at the inn's dining room.

Best vintage trailer hotel 2024

Asheville River Cabins was fourth on the list of best vintage trailer hotels of 2024. At 318 Wanderlust Ridge in Arden, Asheville River Cabins offers reservations for private cabins and vintage Airstream trailers. Its website suggests hiking the property's river trail or tubing down the river.

Currently, riverfront Airstream rentals start at $159 per night. Airstreams are equipped with full kitchens and private fire pits.
