Shaparak khorsandi, touring review - sex, drugs and rock'n'roll, the 90s viewed from afar.

Shaparak Khorsandi has reverted to her given name since she last toured (she used to be known as Shappi) but other than that not much has changed in her brand of feelgood comedy, and her new show , It Was the 90s! , is an amusing look back at her youth from the perspective of middle age.

The show, which I saw at Soho Theatre , is Covid-delayed, but the pandemic barely features as Khorsandi delves rather further back to describe her twenties and the adventures she had, now viewed with the benefit of two decades of additional life experience. She has dived into her personal life before in her shows with great success, but here a lot of the reminiscences, one suspects, would not make for comfortable viewing by her parents.

The memory kick has been caused by her 14-year-old son “discovering” '90s music, including Blur and Oasis and, as she patiently points out to him, she lived through it the first time. But now she's amused to find that her youth is social history for him, although she refuses to believe that the rave generation are all nearing 50.

Khorsandi was a ladette – “We mixed up feminism and alcoholism,” she says wryly – and remembers fondly those times before marriage and motherhood when, as she says, one-night-stands were almost obligatory and casual drug use was normal.

There are some good stories about her and her friends' sexual exploits – there's an interesting mention of Nivea cream – and a few tales from her festival-going and university days when she was surrounded by people much richer than her.

Khorsandi doesn't offer any great insights but that's not her stock-in-trade as she mostly doesn't dwell on serious stuff in her comedy – although there were a few points in It Was the 90s! when I wished she would. Instead she gets good mileage out of the differences between how it was then and how it is now, and how one's politics have to accommodate a different reality as we get older. And her closing gag, after a couple of clever callbacks, is fantastic.

Ah, the 90s! The decade that Shaparak was in her twenties and 'ladette' culture ruled the school. The decade when there was nothing to be done but party, and Shaparak found herself flying about London with hope in her heart, a tenner in her pocket and spare knickers in her handbag. She matched the boys pint-for-pint and frequently woke up in parts of London she'd never heard of. With hindsight though, the way people behaved back then looks like the ultimate in self harm. In those days, 'mindfulness' was making sure you had enough money for the night bus and 'self-care' was putting your flat shoes in a handbag. This is a show about how we 90s kids are looking to young people to learn how to take care of ourselves.

Shappi Khorsandi is a comedian, author, speaker and advocate for human rights.

Shappi established herself as one of the UK’s finest comedians with her sell-out Edinburgh show, Asylum Speaker. Despite the basis for the show being her experiences as a child refugee fleeing Iran and terrorists attempting to murder her father, Shappi’s sensitive yet witty exploration of these events created an instant comedy smash hit.

It also lead to the publication of her childhood memoirs, “A Beginner’s Guide To Acting English“, her best-selling literary debut, described by the Scotsman as  ‘filled with laughter, wonder and compassion’. Emma Thompson said “This very funny, acute book also made me cry”.

Shappi went on to publish her first novel, Nina Is Not Ok, which was described by the Telegraph as ‘moving, funny and shocking’ and received tremendous acclaim from critics and readers alike.

Shappi’s career has taken her to all corners of the globe. She has appeared on countless TV & Radio shows, including: Live at the Apollo, Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, I’m a Celebrity: Get Me Out of Here, Mock The Week, 8 Out Of 10 Cats, MasterChef, Have I Got News For You, QI, Pointless Celebrities, Question Time and Just a Minute, as well as her own show, Shappi Talk.

As a keynote speaker and awards host, Shappi can deftly handle the most serious subjects with a sprinkling of humour – a skill perfected in her early stand-up shows.  Drawing on her past experiences as a female comic breaking into a male-dominated industry, Shappi is a popular speaker on topics surrounding diversity and inclusion and mental health. Her charmingly candid style combined with her sharp-as-a-tack delivery ensure that whether speaking virtually or in-person, she never fails to connect with an audience.

Shappi has done features for several national publications and has a regular, weekly column in the Independent.

She has received an honorary doctorate from Winchester University for her contribution to the arts. Her mother was overjoyed, until she realised Shappi can’t actually write prescriptions for her.

Shappi has also received the prestigious James Joyce Award for outstanding success in her field from Dublin University.

She has two dogs, two cats and two children so can often be found hiding in the airing cupboard, eating crisps in the dark.
