If there’s one thing you have to see in the Singapore airport, it’s this giant manmade waterfall! The HSBC Rain Vortex is the world’s tallest indoor waterfall, cascading down 40 meters and through 7 stories.

The waterfall is free to visit, and highly photogenic at all times of day. It’s set in a beautiful jungle area called the Shiseido Forest Valley, which is covered with green foliage, trees, and walking paths. There’s even a free sound and light show at night.

3. Walk The Canopy Bridge (Jewel)

After you’ve seen the Rain Vortex waterfall from below, go to the canopy bridge and see it from above!

This is a transparent glass bridge suspended 23 meters above ground. If you’ve never walked on a glass bottom bridge before, this is a great place to try it! The bridge is kid-friendly and not too scary to walk on, even if you aren’t a big fan of heights.

The top floor of Changi Jewel (at Level 5) is home to a 14,000 square meter recreational area called the Canopy Park, which has a bunch of fun family-friendly activities. It’s one of the best things to do in Changi airport with kids.

The Hedge Maze at Canopy Park is Singapore’s biggest hedge maze, and the Mirror Maze can be fun for kids too. There’s also a net area where you can walk and bounce on nets suspended above the ground.

There are small gardens scattered throughout the transit areas of the Singapore airport, giving travelers a chance to go outside, catch a breath of fresh air, and enjoy the flowers.

Terminal 1 is home to the Water Lily Garden. Terminal 2 is home to the Sunflower Garden, which has cheery patch of sunflowers, and the Orchid Garden, which has more than 700 orchids from 30 varieties, arranged according to their colors and shapes.

The swimming pool is part of the Aerotel Transit Hotel , which is located on the airside of Terminal 1 in Changi airport, and it’s generally open daily from 12 PM (noon) to 9 PM.

14. Go Down The Slide (Terminal 3)

Last but not least, Changi is home to Singapore’s tallest slide, and it’s also the tallest slide in an airport anywhere in the world!

It’s a curvy slide that is 12 meters tall (four stories high), and should be lots of fun for kids and kids at heart. The Slide is open daily from 12 PM (noon) to 10:30 PM. You can find more information on the Changi website .

To start off, I have sectioned the following Singapore Layover guide into three (3)…

• Go Outside (DIY): Advisable to follow if you have at least 6 hours of total Singapore layover time. The ‘safest’ is if you have at least 8 hours of a stopover — this is considering traffic during rush hours, etc. Of course, you can also do the suggestions listed under this section if you have lesser hours BUT only if you’re really fast and efficient (…and if you’re willing to take the risk of missing your flight). .
• Go Outside (FREE Tour): You can only do this outside tour if you have at least 5.5 hours of total layover. This service won’t be given to you if you have less. .
• Stay Inside (Airport): Obviously, this is best if you don’t have the time to go through immigration and back; hence, it’s ideal if you have 6 hours or less of Singapore layover time — rest assured, there are so many fun things to do inside the airport!

IMPORTANT : If you want to GO OUTSIDE , no matter if it’s the DIY or FREE Tour option, you need to have a valid visa to exit the Singapore Changi Airport and clear immigration. Depending on your nationality , you will need a visa to enter Singapore (e.g. if you’re from the Philippines like me, we are issued visas on arrival for stays of up to 30 days) . . Take note that one of the requirements for entry into Singapore is to provide proof of onward travel — or basically, proof of a flight ticket back home or to another destination after your stay in Singapore. IMPORTANT TIPS: – Much like I’ve already mentioned above, this kind of Singapore layover itinerary is ideal if you have at least 6 hours in between your flights (8 hours being the safest) — this is taking into account traffic, transit, check-in, and immigration times. . – Don’t forget to leave your luggage at the airport. It’s best to leave your carry-on too, as well as any other heavy backpacks because they will be a pain to carry when you explore the city. . – It’s also best that you have all of your flights under the same airline, if not operated by airline partners so that you can have your checked-in luggage go all the way to your destination. Now, I’m NOT telling you to do all of the below activities in one go, because that’s just impossible. Sure, Singapore may be a small mega city but it still holds tons of attractions and activities.

So what I suggest instead is that you pick 1 or 2 categories below (colored green, depending on your preference), and then you either do all the activities under it or a few (depending on how long your layover is).

◘◘ The Typical Hotspots

Marina Bay Sands: This is an iconic resort complex that faces Marina Bay in Singapore and it features The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands Mall, a museum, two large theatres, restaurants, Crystal Pavillions, art-science exhibits, casinos and so much more!

• SkyPark Observation Deck = Providing breathtaking panoramic views over the city, this observation deck also has the world’s longest elevated swimming pool with a vanishing edge (a.k.a. infinity pool) that’s located 191 meters above the ground. (You can only swim in it though if you’re a guest of the hotel; but still and the same, this is a great spot to be in and you can buy entry tickets through this link ).
• Spectra Light Show = This is an amazing outdoor light and water show that’s displayed along the promenade. The show happens at 8PM and 9PM on Sunday to Thursday, and at 8PM, 9PM and 10PM on Fridays and Saturdays. (If you ask me, it’s better to watch this show from the other side of Marina Bay Sands).

Gardens by the Bay: This mystical oasis features more than 500,000 plants and about 18 Avatar-like Supertrees that will take your breath away! • SuperTree Grove: These Avatar-ish trees light up at night and have a music and light show at 7:45PM and 8:45PM daily! It’s even possible to have your dinner inside this SuperTree and feel like a modern Tarzan and Jane (or Jake Sully and Neytiri, in line with the Avatar feel).
• Cloud Forest: This features the world’s tallest indoor waterfall at 35 meters as well as a scenic mist-filled Treetop and Cloud Walk!

Singapore Flyer: Reaching a height of 40 stories, I recommend riding this Ferris Wheel at night to have an amazing view over the entire Marina Bay. Singapore Botanic Gardens: A 158-year-old tropical garden that is honored as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Singapore’s first!). You will love the fact that entrance here is FREE from 5AM to 12AM (except for the National Orchid Garden – the park’s crown jewel – which is open 8:30AM to 7PM and charges SGD 5).

ArtScience Museum: This place is that giant white flower-like building that you see on Marina Bay and it is famous for its varied art and science exhibitions. One of the most popular of which is the Future World exhibition for its impressive light set-ups (in collaboration with teamLab, a renowned Japanese interdisciplinary art collective). Haji Lane: Considered a ‘hipster’ neighborhood, you will love the boutique shops in this area (not to mention the impressive wall art).

Clarke Quay: This is a historical riverside in the city that is now a hotspot for bars, clubs, and restaurants

The Old Airport Road Hawker Centre: This is one of the biggest hawker centers and which a lot of Singaporeans swear by given its long history! Kampong Glam: This is a neighborhood in the city that’s filled with watering holes, cafes, and restaurants to fill up your tummy. One of the places you must not miss is Zam Zam in order to try their murtabak (stuffed pancake) that has been famous since 1908.

Chinatown: This ethnic enclave is also a place that you must witness, other than its distinct Chinese cultural elements, you should enjoy the area by grabbing a bite at one of the hawker stalls and a drink too in places such as Tea Chapter. Pulau Ubin: If you’ve got the time during your Singapore layover, go ride a bumboat to reach Pulau Ubin, a nearby island that is famous for its wildlife, cycle trails, and footpaths. Truth be told, this might just be the last real ‘kampung’ (village) in Singapore and you will love its unspoiled and rustic charm.

MacRitchie Nature Trail: This is a gateway to the city’s natural reserves and it is a well-known spot for nature lovers and exercise enthusiasts. • Canopy Bridge: Suspended 23 meters above ground, with a glass bottom at the center portion for a gripping vantage point, the Canopy Bridge is sure to thrill and impress.
• ManuLife Sky Nets: Experience the thrill of being almost weightless as you leap about this giant net! Stretching 250 meters long, even little ones can safely indulge in free play. At its highest point 8 meters above Canopy Park, you’ll feel like you can reach the sky.

Anyhow, Jewel is easily connected to the Arrival Hall of Terminal 1. A free airport shuttle bus service also goes between Terminal 4 and Terminal 2.

It’s important to remember that this is only available for transit passengers of Changi Airport who have at least 5.5 hours of Singapore layover period and are staying in Singapore for less than 24 hours. As I’ve previously mentioned, Singapore Changi Airport is so huge that it can be a destination in itself, making it a perfect place to spend your Singapore layover. It’s no wonder that it’s the world’s best airport!

So if you ever find yourself with less than 6 hours’ worth of flight layover/stopover, below are the number of things that you can do to fill up the time.

TIP:  Are you flying with Singapore Airlines, SilkAir, or Air New Zealand…? If you are, don’t forget to claim your transit reward that is valued from SGD $20 at any of the iShopChangi Collection Centers at the transit areas of Terminals 2 and 3 (open 24 hours daily). . – Just present your passport, boarding pass, and e-tickets that show your full itinerary. . – Transit means that you have a layover at the airport that is not more than 24 hours. . – Your e-ticket numbers must begin with 618 or 629 or 086 and you must be on transit in Changi Airport on both legs of your journey — so no, one-way journey tickets are not eligible. If with Scoot, flight numbers are TR597 or TR596 . – This transit reward can be used at all retail outlets in transit and public areas of Changi Airport. Much like most of Southeast Asia , Singapore is customarily hot and humid all year long but with the following months having pronounced differences:

» Getting in to Singapore

By air. As Southeast Asia’s (SEA’s) largest aviation hub, the main airport, Changi Airport (SIN), is known to many. In order to find the best flight deals from your point of origin, I recommend browsing through Skyscanner .

From the airport, there are a number of ways to reach the city:

• Airport Shuttle : There are Ground Transport Desks in every terminal with different transport options (limousine, 4-seater, etc.) , but if you want to avoid the lines, you can already book online .
• Private Transfer : Apart from taxis, you can get round-trip transfers from the airport and also book this arrangement online .
• You can purchase an SG Tourist Pass to get unlimited travel on MRT and LRT lines as well as buses for a number of days.

By land. The country is linked by 2 land crossings to Peninsular Malaysia namely the Causeway and the Second Link. You can drive in your own car, ride a bus or even a taxi (but only specially-licensed ones) . Otherwise, there is a shuttle train service from Malaysia through Keretapi Tanah Melayu (Malayan Railay or KTMB).

By sea. Singapore has 5 ferry terminals: HarbourFront (formerly World Trade Centre) near Sentosa, Marina Bay Cruise Centre in Marina Bay, Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal on the East Coast, as well as Changi Ferry Terminal and Changi Point Ferry Terminal, both at the eastern side of the island near the airport. These terminals all link to Indonesia’s province of Riau Islands and the Malaysian state of Johor.

Most nationalities can enter Singapore without a visa. For more information, you can check this link. But if you’re from the Philippines like me, we are issued visas on arrival for stays of up to 30 days, whether it’s for touristic or business purposes.

Meanwhile, passengers of eligible nationalities may also qualify for VFTF (Visa Free Transit Facility) if the prevailing entry requirements are met. » Singapore Currency

Singapore dollar (sign: S$; code: SGD) wherein USD$1 is equal to about SGD 1.30~ or Php 48~ (this is as of 2021). In the event that you want to exchange your money for SGD, I highly advise that you do NOT exchange your money at the airport since the rates there are not competitive.

• How to best exchange your currency? Either exchange it at a bank or at a money exchanger in your home country or in the city center. Better yet, just withdraw from an ATM with your debit/credit card — however, you must do one big withdrawal to minimize fees with your bank. Speaking of cards, a lot of establishments accept credit cards but it’s always advisable to have cash on hand because a lot of smaller shops do not accept international credit cards.

To give you an idea, you should expect to travel in Singapore with an average daily cost of about USD $45~ per person on a budget, or at least $120~ if you want to experience more comfort in activities, tours, hotels, and more. (Values below show low budget to medium budget ranges).

• Food: $8 to $20 USD / day
• Fun: $10 to $25 USD / day
• Transport: $3 to $8 per ride

All terminals in Singapore Changi Airport have baggage storage and counters — plus, they are available 24 hours! Prices for this typically start at USD$4, so it’s great when you have a Singapore layover. For more information, see here .

» How to Get Around Singapore

Singapore is a small metropolis, so you can either walk (depending on the locations you’re going to) or take the following options:

• Rail: MRT and LRT trains are cheap and reliable modes of transportation. It’s best to get an EZ-link or Nets FlashPay farecards (this can be bought either from the station or at convenience stores or online ), and fares usually cost from $.80 to $2.20.
• Bus: These are a bit slower but still great for shorter distances. You can pay in cash or coins but it’s best to pay with your Ez-link or Nets FlashPay card , just don’t forget to tap out or you’ll end up paying the maximum fare.
• Taxi: The flag down rate starts at $3, anyhow you also opt for an Uber-like service by downloading the Grab ride-hailing app (you can pay by cash or credit card).

Meanwhile, when you’re mapping out your day-to-day route, just use Google Maps because it will show in detail the fastest connections you can do (by walking, by car, by bus, and by train).

» Staying Connected in Singapore

Singapore has one of the fastest internet connections in the world so you’ll be assured of great connections wherever you go. To add, most places even offer FREE WiFi — but in order to consistently stay connected online during your Singapore trip, get your own pocket WiFi or SIM Card .

» Safety in Singapore

Singapore is one of the safest countries in the world with very low crime rates — however , this is NO excuse to get too complacent. ‘Little crime’ does not mean ‘no crime’, so stay vigilant and be “street smart” by using your common sense at all times. Nevertheless, solo travelers don’t have much to worry about in this amazing country.

English is widely spoken and it is one of the 4 official languages (the other three being Mandarin, Malay and Tamil). That being said, you won’t have difficulty going around Singapore because everyone speaks English. Nevertheless, below are some helpful Mandarin and Malay phrases.

Yes, immigration usually asks for proof of onward travel — or basically, proof of a flight ticket back to your home country or to any other destination after your stay in Singapore. If flight reservations are enough, you can easily purchase this from OneWayFly for only $16, and then present it to the immigration counter.

You should make your way to your departure gate at least 60 minutes before your flight departure time.

All visitors to Singapore must have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months after their date of arrival in the country.

Singapore typically uses plug type C (two round pins), type G (three rectangular pins in a triangular pattern), and type M (three round pins).  The country operates on a 230V voltage and a frequency of 50Hz.

It is not customary in Singapore to tip. In hotels and some restaurants though, you will sometimes see a 5-10% service charge on your bill.

If you are that last-minute guy/gal who always arrive at the airport just in time before the check-in counter closes, I recommend that you arrive much earlier if you’re flying out from Changi Airport Singapore . I’ll tell you why.

There are SO many things to do in Changi Airport! And don’t worry if you’re on a tight budget, the most awesome places are free anyway. No wonder it’s the world’s best airport according to Skytrax in 2019!

Because I’m an ambitious traveller, I did what I should do. I spent a lot of time at the airport, trying to compile an enormous list of things to do in Changi Airport. The list is divided into 5 main categories according to their location: Jewel, Terminal 1, Terminal 2, Terminal 3 and Terminal 4.

The list includes FREE things to do as well as things that require money. It also includes both Transit Area (i.e. inside departure gate where only flying passengers are allowed to enter) and Public Area (i.e. area where everyone can access, regardless whether they’re flying or not).

Not many people know how awesome Changi Airport is, including me two years ago. You don’t want to be the last person to know that there are cinemas, swimming pool and sunflower garden in Changi Airport!

Quick Tips:

• Public Area is the area that you can enter without flying. If you’re flying out of Changi, you can visit Public Area BEFORE entering departure gate. If you’re flying into Changi, you can visit Public Area AFTER clearing immigration.
• Transit Area is the area that you can only enter after checking-in and entering departure gate.
• To save time, you can buy SIM Card in advance and collect upon arrival.
• If you’re looking for budget food, go to Terminal 1 Staff Canteen , Terminal 2 Staff Canteen , Terminal 3 Kopitiam at B2, Terminal 4 Food Emporium at L2M. All are located in Public Area (the area where everyone can visit even if they’re not flying).
• There are 6 ways to travel from Changi Airport to City

A. Things to do in Jewel

Jewel is the latest addition to Changi Airport. This incredible building is open for public, so everyone can visits even if they’re not flying. I highly recommend everyone to visit Jewel when they’re passing by Changi Airport. Here are ways to get to Jewel:

• From MRT: Either go to T2 or T3 and follow the steps mentioned in T2 / T3 below.
• From T1: Go to Arrival Hall (Level 1) and Jewel will be right there in front of you.
• From T2: Go to Departure Hall (level 2) Row 1, walk through the link bridge to Jewel.
• From T3: Go to Departure Hall (level 2) Row 11, walk through the link bridge to Jewel.
• From T4: Take shuttle bus to T2, and follow the steps mentioned in T2 above.

Jewel is a separate building from airport terminals, everyone can access it regardless of whether they’re flying or not. If you’re flying out of Changi, you can visit Jewel BEFORE going into departure gate. If you’ve already entered departure gate, you can’t enter Jewel anymore.

1. Rain Vortex (Every floor) – HIGHLY RECOMMENDED – FREE

At 40m high, Rain Vortex is the world’s tallest indoor waterfall! If you visit during the day, you’ll get the dreamy tropical waterfall look. On the other hand, if you visit at night, you’ll enjoy the spectacular light and sound show (the show is displayed every hour from 8.30pm to midnight)

You can see the Rain Vortex at every floor of Jewel, including basement. But, the best views are those from Level 1 and above. I suggest that you start your journey from the topmost floor (Level 6) and make your way down by foot.

2. Forest Valley (Every floor) – FREE

Forest Valley is a huge multi-storey garden surrounding Rain Vortex. It has various trails with thousands of trees, shrubs and flowers. Forest Valley can be accessed at every floor and it’s open for 24 hours daily.

3. Canopy Park (Level 5) – RECOMMENDED – PAID

Located at the topmost level of Jewel, Canopy Park is said to be the wonderland for all. I have to completely agree.

The admission ticket which costs SGD 5 include the admission for these attractions:

• Discovery Slide – a playground which is also an art and a viewing deck
• Topiary Walk – life-sized animal topiary made from colourful flowers and plants
• Foggy Bowls – a lawn with mystical fog and artificial grass
• Petal Garden – the name says it all: a garden full of colourful petals

4. Canopy Bridge (Level 5) – PAID

The Canopy Bridge is probably the best place to see the Rain Vortex and Forest Valley from the top. It’s 50m long and 23m above ground. At the center portion, the floor is see-through glass panels, so if you’re an adrenaline-seeker, it’s a great place for you to feel like you’re walking among the clouds. Ticket costs SGD 8.

5. Sky Nets (Level 5) – PAID – Public Area

There are 2 nets here, bouncing nets and walking nets. Both require different tickets; if you want to visit both nets, you can consider getting a bundle. The sky nets are surely fun but you need to be very careful because the gaps are quite large for young kids. Make sure your kids are supervised while having fun on the nets.

6. Hedge Maze (Level 5) – PAID

The hedge maze is the largest foliage maze in Singapore. The foliage is 1.8m tall and there is a lookout tower, from which you can see the entire maze and spot your family and friends.

7. Mirror Maze (Level 5) – PAID

Mirror Maze is not for the claustrophobics, unless they love Instagrammable spots. The maze has foliage canopy so it’s nothing like your usual indoor maze.

8. Changi Experience Studio (Level 4) – PAID

At Changi Experience Studio, you get to explore Changi Airport’s past, present and future through a virtual journey of interactive games, and immersive shows.

Several must-do things in the studio are: Amazing Runway (bike race), Garden of Harmony (projection show) and smile challenge (photoshoot challenge).

B. Things to do in Terminal 1

9. cactus garden – recommended (t1, transit area, level 3) – free.

Cactus Garden is an outdoor rooftop garden that features more than 100 species of cactus! I love being surrounded by cactus. Since this garden is not sheltered, you might want to use sunscreen to protect you from sunlight.

10. Scuptural Tree Garden – RECOMMENDED (T1, Transit Area, Level 2 and 3) – FREE

I just fell in love with this garden when I first saw it. How could I not? It’s the perfect place for Instagram shots, it’s out-of-the-world, it’s just not something that you expect to find in an airport.

Basically, you can enter the garden from Level 2 or 3. It’s quite hidden and I often past by the garden without noticing it. When I visited, I was the only person at the garden, so it’s really a hidden gem in Changi Airport.

11. The Social Tree (T1, Transit Area, Level 2) – FREE

Now, this is probably the most known structure in Terminal 1. After passing the immigration, you’ll find a huge atrium where this tree is located. You can take a photo at the machine and decorate the photo before sending it to your email. You can also directly post the photo to your Facebook. Then, your photo will appear on the Social Tree for some time.

12. Water Lily Garden (T1, Transit Area, Level 2) – FREE

At Water Lily Garden, you can find several ponds whether beautiful lilies grow in the freshwater aquatic environment.

13. Piazza Garden (T1, Transit Area, Level 2) – FREE

Located at Central Piazza right after immigration, Piazza Garden features seasonal flowers and plants that are important in Singapore’s culture.

Need a nap? Or just need a quiet alone time to think, while staring at the planes? Enter Snooze Lounge. It’s available at Level 2 and 3 but seats are limited.

15. Playground (T1, Transit Area, Level 2) – FREE

Let your kiddos (age 1 to 12) have fun at this simple playground while waiting for boarding gate to open.

16. Viewing Mall (T1, Public Area, Level 3) – FREE

Viewing Mall is the place for you to see the planes even if you’re not flying. Located at Level 3 of public area, it can be quite challenging to find.

17. Playground (T1, Public Area, Level 3) – FREE

Located nearby the Viewing Mall, there’s a mini playground with slides and car rides.

18. Kinetic Rain (T1, Public Area, Level 2) – FREE

Watch 1,216 bronze droplets dance at Departure Check-In Hall. The Kinetic Rain is mesmerizing, therapeutic, inspiring, and addictive at the same time!

19. Swimming Pool with Jacuzzi – RECOMMENDED (T1, Transit Area, Level 3) – PAID

I don’t think there’s a free shower in Changi Airport. So, if you really need a shower, I recommend that you go for a swim at this gorgeous swimming pool instead. Even though this rooftop pool is part of Aerotel Airport Transit Hotel, it is open for public as well. It costs SGD 17 per person for access to this swimming pool, jacuzzi and its shower facilities. There’s also a poolside bar!

20. Plaza Premium Lounge (T1, Transit Area, Level 3, above Gate C-1) – PAID

Plaza Premier Lounge is a pay per use lounge where you can choose to enjoy just the shower facility or the full lounge facilities. For shower facility, it costs SGD 16 and it comes with shower amenities and welcome drink.

For Lounge use, guests can enjoy signature dishes, shower facilities, complimentary Wi-Fi, charging stations, TV channels, newspapers and magazines for leisure reading.

21. Aerotel Airport Transit Hotel (T1, Transit Area, Level 3, above Gate D41) – PAID

If you need a room for a comfortable overnight sleep or nap at Terminal 1, head to Aerotel Airport Transit Hotel. Prices start from SGD 55 onwards. Guests of Aerotel have complimentary access to the swimming pool! Full detail of Changi Airport’s transit hotels here .

22. Airport Wellness Oasis (T1, Transit Area, Level 3, Near D Gates) – PAID

Whether it’s fish spa, foot reflexology, or full body massage, the folks at Airport Wellness Oasis are ready to serve their guests 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

C. Things to do in Terminal 2

23. sunflower garden – recommended (t2, transit area, level 3) – free.

A bright sunflower always brightens up my mood. And when there are hundreds, if not thousands, of sunflowers smiling at me, I feel like I’m in paradise! This Sunflower Garden is just SO beautiful, you don’t want to miss it when you’re in Changi Airport!

24. Free Singapore Tour – RECOMMENDED (T2, Transit Area, Level 2) – FREE

If you’re a transit passenger, and you have at least 6 hours layover period till your connecting flight, why not join one of the free 2.5 hours guided tours ?

The Heritage Tour runs 4 times daily and the City Sights Tour runs 2 times daily. This option is perfect for people who have never explored Singapore, or who want to explore Singapore’s major sights without hassle.

25. Enchanted Garden (T2, Transit Area, Level 2) – FREE

Enjoy the sound of nature amidst freshly-cut flowers and soft ferns at The Enchanted Garden.

26. Orchid Garden (T2, Transit Area, Level 2) – FREE

Admire more than 700 orchids of 30 species and various colours at the Orchid Garden.

27. Movie Theatre (T2, Transit Area, Level 3) – FREE

Free movie for 24 hours? Yes, in fact, there are 2 movie theaters in Changi Airport. The first one is at Terminal 2, Level 3, just beside Sunflower Garden and Entertainment Deck.

It’s so popular that most seats are always taken. But you can sit on the floor or stand at the back of the theatre to enjoy the movie!

28. Entertainment Deck (T2, Transit Area, Level 3) – FREE

The Entertainment Deck is the place for you to lose the sense of time while waiting for your flight. There are Xbox 360 / PlayStation 3, Xbox Kinect room (it wasn’t working when we visited, though), MTV booth and cafeteria.

29. Family Zone & Play Area (T2, Transit Area, Level 2) – FREE

Let your kids be entertained with the colourful slides at the playground or cartoons in the Family Zone. There are also diaper changing room and nursing room in the Family Zone.

30. Snooze Lounge (T2, Transit Area, Level 2) – FREE

There are a few places in Terminal 2 where you can sleep or take a nap for free. First, it’s Oasis Lounge located at the opposite of Gate E11. It’s quite a huge place and seats are limited at night. Then, there’s Sanctuary Lounge located at the opposite of Gate E5.

31. Interactive Art (T2, Transit Area, Level 2) – FREE

This Art Rubbing Station at Terminal 2 is located just beside Orchid Garden.

32. Xperience Zone (T2, Transit Area, Level 2) – FREE

Enjoy comfortable seats while watching sports events or catching up with financial news on large screens.

33. Viewing Mall (T2, Public Area, Level 3) – FREE

If you’re not flying but would like to see planes, head to Viewing Mall at Level 3 of the public area.

34. Ambassador Transit Lounge (T2, Transit Area, Level 3, above Orchid Garden) – PAID

Ambassador Transit Lounge is a pay per use lounge that offers various services and facilities. The rate for 5 hours usage is SGD 58.85/adult. Children between age 6 to 12 enjoy 50% discount, while children under 5 years old enjoy complimentary entry.

Included are the buffet and non-alcoholic drinks, shower, wifi, osim massage chairs, newspaper, magazines, and computer stations. For 3 hours usage, the rate is SGD 40/adult.

35. Spa Express (T2, Transit Area, Level 3) – PAID

Open from 6am to 1am daily, Spa Express offers massage, body scrub, facial and even shower and sauna facility. Their services range from 20 minutes to as long as 90 minutes. The price starts from SGD 45 for a 20-min massage and SGD 15 for a 30-min shower.

D. Things to do in Terminal 3

36. butterfly garden – recommended (t3, transit area, level 2 and 3) – free.

Oh my, this adorable 2-storey Butterfly Garden is FREE for every passenger to visit!

There are so many beautiful butterflies, flowers and pineapples in the garden. It’s so surreal, I spent like 30 minutes there and it wasn’t nearly enough!

You ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO visit this awesome place when you’re flying to/from/through Changi Airport.

37. Free Singapore Tour – RECOMMENDED (T3, Transit Area, Level 2) – FREE

This is similar to the one at Terminal 2. There are 2 types of tours offered: The Heritage Tour that runs 4 times daily and the City Sights Tour that runs 2 times daily.

To be eligible, you need to be a transit passenger and have at least 6 hours layover period till your connecting flight. Each guided tour lasts 2.5 hours. Check the full requirement here .

Here in terminal 3, the booth is located at Level 2, near Transfer Lounge A and Gate A1-A8.

38. Movie Theatre (T3, Transit Area, Level 3) – FREE

Similar to the one in Terminal 2, this Movie Theatre plays movie for 24 hours every day, except during the weekly maintenance.

39. Snooze Lounge (T3, Transit Area, Level 2 and 3) – FREE

At terminal 3, there are 2 small snooze lounges at Level 2 where you can take a nap or sleep on a reclined bed (one is located near Playground, the other is near GST refund); both are facing the runway. The is also rest area at Level 3, near Singapore Food Street.

40. Interactive Art (T3, Public and Transit Area) – FREE

There are 2 interactive art stations in Terminal 3. One is located in Transit Area, Level 2 near gate A16 – A20. The other one is located in Public Area, Basement 2.

Both stations allow your children to create imprints from rubbing surfaces of Singapore and Changi Airport’s iconic landmarks.

41. Play Area (T3, Transit Area, Level 2 and 3) – FREE

It seems like Terminal 3 has abundant facilities. There are 2 play areas here, one at Level 2 near gate A16 – A20; the other one at Level 3, near Singapore Food Street.

42. TV Lounge (T3, Transit Area, Level 2) – FREE

After all the exploration, you need a place to sit down, unwind and watch TV? Head to TV Lounge to watch TV shows while resting on plush seats.

43. Massage Chairs (T3, Transit Area, Level 2) – FREE

Actually, there are so many massage chairs scattered around all the terminals in Changi Airport. However, my personal favourite has to be the OSIM massage chairs at Terminal 3, Level 2, near Snooze Lounge.

It’s a whole-body massage chair, not only foot massage chair. However, not all chairs were working when we visited.

44. Viewing Mall (T3, Public Area, Level 4) – FREE

Similar to Terminal 1 and 2, there’s also a Viewing Mall for everyone to see the planes and runway regardless whether they’re flying or not.

However, the viewing area is quite set back and rather far from the runway, so the view isn’t as spectacular as those in T1 and T2.

45. The Slide @ T3 – RECOMMENDED (T3, Public Area, Level 1) – FREE if you spend the required amount

The Slide@T3 is Singapore’s tallest slide and also the world’s tallest slide in an airport! The total height is 12m (4 storeys).

There are 2 slides, the tall one and the short one. The tall slide starts at Level 1 and ends at Basement 3. Meanwhile, the short slide starts at Basement 2 and ends at Basement 3.

You’ll get 10 free rides if you are a Changi Rewards Member (if you aren’t, just register for an account for free). To redeem the ticket, go to the Customer Service Counter at Basement 2 and show your e-card.

The slide is open for adults as well, as long as you’re above 1.3m and below 2m height. If you’re under 1.3m but over 1.1m high, you can enjoy the preview slide of only 1.5-storey at Basement 2.

46. Ambassador Transit Lounge (T3, Transit Area, Level 3, next to Movie Theatre) – PAID

Similar to the one in Terminal 2, the rates for Ambassador Transit Lounge is SGD 58.85/adult for 5 hours usage, and SGD 40/adult for 3 hours usage.

Lounge access includes the buffet and non-alcoholic drinks, shower, wifi, osim massage chairs, newspaper, magazines, and computer stations. Children aged 6 to 12 can enjoy 50% discount, and children under 5 enter for free.

If you’re not taking the lounge package and just want a shower only, it costs SGD 16. There is no gym at Terminal 3, instead, there’s a meeting room. There are also Nap Suites; they cost SGD 41.2/person for 3 hours.

47. The Haven by JetQuay (T3, Public Area, Level 1) – PAID [closed]

The Haven by JetQuay is the only pay per use lounge at Changi Airport that is located in the public area.

The rate of the lounge package starts from SGD 35.31 for 2 hours usage. It includes light refreshment, drinks, shower, wifi, cable TV, newspapers, magazines, kids’ corner, a business centre with internet workstations, photocopier machine and complimentary wireless internet service.

Shower-only facility costs SGD 16.48. Nap rooms start from S$82.39 for 3 hours. Meeting rooms are available for booking at additional charges.

E. Things to do in Terminal 4

48. peranakan gallery – recommended (t4, transit area) – free.

The Peranakan Gallery at Terminal 4 is like a mini version of Peranakan Museum.

Here, you can find old Peranakan photographs, traditional furniture including wedding bed and crockery, sarong kebayas that inspire Singapore Airlines’ uniform, a miniature of the traditional Peranakan shophouse, and many other Peranakan-related exhibitions.

49. Peranakan Love Story – RECOMMENDED (T4, Transit Area, Level 2) – FREE

Peranakan Love Story is a 6-minute long video that’s played on the Heritage shophouses’ façade, located at Heritage Zone at Level 2.

The story is set in the 1930s era in Singapore. It’s a non-conversational musical performance about the romance of two young adults who are neighbours.

50. Entertainment Corner (T4, Transit Area, Level 2) – FREE

Located near gate G18, the Entertainment Corner offers Xbox Kinect and Arcade Games for you to enjoy before your flight.

51. TV Lounge (T4, Transit Area, Level 2) – FREE

The TV Lounge allows you to catch some TV shows while relaxing in the comfy seats.

52. Snooze Lounge (T4, Transit Area, Level 2 and 2M) – FREE

Yep you can sleep or nap in Changi Airport Terminal 4. Head to Level 2 and 2M to restore your energy tank!

53. Play Area (T4, Transit Area, Level 2) – FREE

Every terminal in Changi Airport has a playground. At Terminal 4, it’s located at Level 2, next to Heritage Zone.

This list don’t include airport hotels, F&B, retail shops, convenient stores, common airport services & facilities (such as money changer, baggage deposit, prayer room, ATM, clinic & pharmacy, post office, wheelchair rental, etc).

It would be super helpful if you could update to distinguish what you can do inside vs outside the passenger area. Ie the jewel is pre checkin (or after customs if arriving) vs almost everything in the terminals (gardens, love story, butterflies, etc.) is after you get through security/ before leaving the terminal.

I trecked to terminal 2 pre checkin (unfortunately my airline doesn’t offer early checkin) to try to see the sunflower garden only to discover that I couldn’t see it. I needed to turn around and walk back to my terminal, wait til I could check in and then take the tram from there. Not so fun with a suitcase and backpack 😩

Bag storage info would also be helpful. It’s currently $15/bag, so I only paid to store one of my suitcases

Looking at a layover in Singapore? Stay entertained with these incredible things to do in Changi Airport – most of which are FREE!

Singapore’s Changi Airport was named the ‘ Best Airport in the World ‘ for a whopping 8 years in a row (2012-2019) – which is no easy feat! And that is due in the most part to the incredible range of attractions and things to do in Changi airport’s 4 interconnected terminals which can keep even the most frequent of airport travelers entertained for hours.

If you have already visited Changi airport, either as a regular passenger on a city break, or have transited through on a layover in Singapore, you will probably be aware of some of the amazing experiences and things to do in Singapore airport. And if you haven’t, you are in for a treat! There are so many attractions located in terminals you may even wish you had a longer layover!

Incredible Things To Do in Changi Airport

There is a HUGE list of incredible things to do in Changi Airport, the majority of which are FREE and located ‘Airside’ (once you have cleared customs/immigration or the side on which you arrive on a connecting flight).

The activities, attractions, and experiences listed in this article are spread across the three interconnected terminals (1,2 & 3) but worry not, as they are all within the same physical building and are linked via Changi’s ‘Sky Train’ monorail system. This can help you easily move throughout and between the terminal buildings if you are short on time, but for those that don’t mind a stroll (or have a few hours to kill) it’s easy to up your daily step count by walking between them.

There is also Jewell – accessible on foot from terminals 1, 2 and 3, and Terminal 4 which can be accessed via shuttle bus.

There are also a few activities that are only available to those on a Singapore layover longer than 5.5 hours. Now, you may wonder why they’ve implemented this rule at such an odd time, but that is time frame that Changi’s airport officials have decided is enough for transit passengers to safely exit the terminal, explore and get back without jeopardizing their connecting flight.

On this basis I have separated out this post into things to do on a short layover in Singapore (for visitors who have less than 5.5 hours in transit) and further things to do for those who have a longer layover (more than 5.5 hours). Plus a whole section dedicated to the newly opened satellite terminal 4. So without further ado, here is the ultimate list of things to do in Changi Airport:

Things to do in Changi Airport on a Short Layover [<5.5 hrs]

Get connected, recharge & relax.

In today’s day and age, being connected to the web is practically a necessity and Changi Airport makes this easy for all passengers by offering free wifi throughout all of the terminal buildings. Just connect to the wifi, enter your details and bam, you’re online!

If you are having difficulty the staff at the information booths also have the technical skills to solve usual connection problems (for me I couldn’t connect as I had logged on two weeks previously) with efficiency and ease.

Add in the fact there are hundreds of international plug sockets throughout the airport, and you can re-charge your devices with ease. There are even stationary bikes that you can cycle to power up (hello quick layover workout!)

Check in with family – update friends, verify your transfer and hotel reservations are all set to go – or just update Facebook and Insta (which you’re definitely going to want to do if you visit some of the attractions listed below!).

Having the ability to check in real-time can take a huge weight of your shoulders and help you relax during your layover in Singapore. And If you are looking for spa and/or shower facilities to up the relaxation a bit more, there are pay-per-use airport lounges where you can get massages, manicures, a hot shower etc – but they are all paid facilities, so don’t take priority on our Free Things to do in Changi Airport list!

Visit the Butterfly Garden (T3)

Oh, and did I mention there’s a 6m grotto waterfall. Its an instagrammers dream! It is easily one of the best things to do at Changi Airport, one of the many FREE things to do in Changi Airport and a must visit on your layover in Singapore Airport. .

Relax in the Orchid Garden by the Koi Pond (T2)

As you wander through the wooden walkways suspended over the swimming Koi Carp below, you’ll notice that the White orchids displayed with floating glass bubbles represent ‘Air’; rare brown and green orchids displayed next to tree root sculptures represent ‘Earth’; the floral columns simulating giant candles represent ‘Fire’ and clustered blue and violet orchids represent the ‘Water’ element.

There’s definitely more to the Orchid garden than meets the eye and it’s just one of the reasons why Singapore is the best airport for layover.

Grab a FREE Massage (T1, 2 & 3) ( Easily One of the Best Things to do in Singapore Airport! )

Whilst most people walk past thinking this is a pay-for machine, the fact is that you can just sit down, pop your feet into the booties and get yourself a 15 minute foot and calf massage – which is why it is one of the best things to do in Singapore airport (although I’d recommend making sure you have socks on before you do as you don’t know whose feet have been there before.. just sayin’).

There are also free full body massage chairs located near to the Wolfgang Puck restaurant in Terminal 1 – although there is often a queue for these and I have even seen people sleeping in them (very inconsiderate IMO). If you are wondering what to go in Changi airport, look no further than these chairs and massage booties!

If these two options don’t float your boat, or if you are in need of a personal touch for your Changi Airport massage, there is a Wellness Oasis in Terminal 1 which accepts walk in clients for massages, reflexology or simply a hot shower and a great spa spots to get a massage Changi Airport.

Wander through the Enchanted Garden (T2)

Get a Makeover and Brow Consultation by Dior at the Shilla Beauty Loft (T3)

Dior Beauty House in particular offer 2 incredible and FREE services for your face and eyebrows. The ‘Fly Perfect With Dior’ is a complimentary 20 minute session with a consultant who does a quick assessment on your skin to determine the right products to be used from the Dior Dreamskin Collection. Their second free offering is a 10 minute Brow Touch Up with a beautician who can help you out with a variety of concerns such as darkening or thickening, to providing definition and shape.

The Dior Beauty House is open for walk-ins from 6am-1am daily.

Watch a Movie (T2 T3)

Playing a variety of the latest blockbusters, slump down into one of the comfy movie theater chairs are catch that film you’ve been wanting to see for a while. Watching a film is one of the best things to do Changi Airport.

Take a dip in the Rooftop Swimming Pool (T1) (Paid)

Get some Vitamin D in the Sunflower Garden (T2)

Wander through this impressive 500 strong sunflower patch as you watch the planes take off & taxi and get some much needed natural light after hours inside the plane/airport. And if your layover in Singapore happens to be under the cover of darkness, never fear – the garden is beautifully lit by special lighting for the (forced) night owls among us.

And if you cant get enough of the outdoor flower displays, don’t miss out on the Lotus Garden in Terminal 1!

Shop ’til you Drop! (T1, 2 & 3)

If you are super short on time or are not a fan of shopping in general, you can always shop online prior to your arrival (or check the Singapore airport shopping hours) at ishopchangi.com  and collect once you arrive in the terminal. This way everyone gets to take advantage of duty free shopping deals – even if you don’t physically want to walk round the shops yourself!

Relax By The Water Lily Garden (T1, Level 2)

Located on Level 2 in Terminal 1 overlooking some of the departure gates, wander through the winding path between the water lily gardens and enjoy a little bit of tranquility.

The plants featured in this garden have adapted to freshwater environments where they grow as marginal, submerged or floating plants. They include the Amazon Water Lily—one of the largest aquatic plants in the world, the Sacred Lotus, and the Screw Pine, which is second only to the coconut in terms of cultural and economic importance in the Pacific region.

Grab a drink in the Cactus Garden (T1)

Just make sure you follow the signs and keep your hands to yourself.. the cacti are spiky. You don’t need to test for yourself, just take my word for it.

Test your Gaming Skills at the Entertainment Deck (T2)

Catch up on the latest news, Sports and current events at the Xperience Zone (T2)

Catch up on the latest news, sports and major events that you may have missed whilst you were in the air in the comfy lounge suite on the Ground Level of Terminal 2. Or catch up on email and social media using the free wifi throughout Changi Airport (you just get to check-in from a comfy chair here!)

They are also the perfect alternative to the Changi Airport transit hotel(s) if you are traveling on a budget or can’t quite justify the full 8 hour fee (the standard airport hotel rental) for a shorter stay.

The Social Tree is one of the Top Changi Airport Activities and fun for friends and families

At almost nine metres tall, The Social Tree is Changi’s largest interactive installation. Surrounding the Tree are eight touch-screen photo booths that allow you to ‘attach’ your photos and videos onto its colourful and animated crown which are saved into an avant-garde memory capsule to be part of Changi’s history for decades to come.

Take SK-IIs Magic Ring Test to show your skins age (T3)

Sunlight, pollution, travel and daily stress can each have an affect on our skin and finding out how much of an affect can help you make decisions moving forward to help improve its condition (presuming your skin age is older than your actual age – if it isn’t – good job!).

The test itself is free, although the therapist may recommend certain products that are suitable for you and these can be purchased should you decide to take them home.

*Note* To access Jewel Changi from an arriving flight (rather than arriving at the airport after a few days in Singapore), visitors will have to go airside first, walk around 20-30 minutes to reach the entrance to Jewel, and after your visit, clear security again to re-enter the terminal. The walk is flat and with moving walkways and lifts/escalators, so is accessible, but be aware of your timings so you don’t miss your connecting flight!

As such, we recommend a minimum of 4-5 hours of transit time to visit Jewel Changi, and remind all airline passengers to check if they require a visa to enter Singapore before attempting to depart the terminal – which although you may not be planning to leave the airport, visiting Jewel will technically require you to enter Singapore for immigration purposes.

If you are arriving at the airport after a trip to Singapore, we recommend heading to Jewel Changi Airport first and then making your way to the main terminals for check-in and departure.

One of the major Changi Airport Attractions is the Kinetic Rain art installation which is located in the public area of Terminal 1.  It is made of 1,216 bronze droplets and measures 9.8m x 4m and can transform into 16 different shapes ranging from abstract art forms to recognizable patterns including an aeroplane, a hot air balloon, a kite and even a dragon!

Take in the Sights on a Singapore City Tour (T2 & 3)

Changi Airport run 2 different 2.5 hour Singapore layover tours showcasing different spots that are free for all transit passengers who have longer than 5.5 hours in the terminal. Simply register for the Singapore tour of your choice at the designated booths in Terminal 2 and 3 (which are easily reached from Terminal 1).

The Heritage Tour takes you through the architectural brilliance of Singapore’s past and present and visits the colonial and cultural districts of Chinatown, Little India and Kampong Glam – with a short stopover at the Merlion Park where you get a photo opportunity with the symbol of Singapore. The second stopover is at Kampong Glam, one of Singapore’s colourful ethnic precincts. The Heritage Tour runs 4 times a day 9am, 11.30am, 2.30pm and 3.30pm with registration for each closing 1 hour before departure.

The City Sights Tour showcases modern Singapore with a short stopover at Merlion Park where you can get a photo with a piece of history of the Lion City, the Merlion, against the magnificent cityscape of our world-class attractions in their night-lights – Singapore Flyer, Marina Bay Sands, the Esplanade, of all others. The tour also offers another short stopover at Gardens by the Bay where you will find the magical Avatar-like Supertrees. This tour runs  twice per day at 6pm and 7.30pm with registration for each closing at an hour before departure.

Ride the Giant Slide @ T3 (Paid)

At 12m high (that’s 4 storeys!) guests can whizz down the Singapore airport slide at speeds of up to 6 m per second and is fun for kids (above 1.3m tall) and adults alike. And as the caption says, it’s the worlds tallest slide in an airport. Yes, this is a paid activity in Changi Airport, but for every $10 spent in the airport you are entitled to 1 ride on the slide.

And with all the incredible shopping available within the terminal buildings, I’m sure that you’ll have a few rides in the bank after you’ve exited the first shop! (Just one note for the adrenaline junkies out there – you can only redeem 10 rides per day per receipt, so you know, use them wisely!)

Things to do in Changi Airport’s Terminal 4

Terminal 4 was opened in 2017 and is the most technologically advanced terminal you are likely to step foot in in this day and age (or until a new tech terminal is built somewhere in the world.. but heck, this one took 4 years, so it it might be a while..)

Located a short bus ride away from the main terminal buildings and not part of the Sky Train network, as such, unless your flight arrives, or departs from there, it may be necessary to estimate how much time you have to transfer and get back to Terminals 1-3 to make sure you don’t want to miss your flight but still want to check out the terminal features.

(I personally didn’t have time on my last layover in Singapore but there is so much art and beauty over there I will definitely have to go and grab the following snaps for myself on my next visit!)

Eat and Drink @ The Tiger’s Den

Experience two true Singaporean icons at one go – Tiger Beer and Asia Pacific Breweries at the Tiger’s Den in Changi Airport’s Terminal 4. Enjoy an ice-cold Tiger Beer that is served fresh from a custom-built draft beer system and local hawker food that is prepared to order and served quickly, reminiscent of how it is done at traditional Singaporean markets and food centers.

The centerpiece of T4, Petalclouds, is a grand-scale kinetic sculpture. It consists of six structures suspended 200m across the Central Galleria and it can be seen from the Departure Check-in Hall, Transit Area and Arrival Hall. Its movement is synchronised to animated lighting and music. Petalclouds is a complex amalgamation of art, music and science.

Thank you for your great article. I have a question. We're arriving at the airport at 8 am. We are not going to have any checked bags. Can we stay in the airside of the airport and explore it for a couple of hours before going through the immigration custom zone? Thank you.

Yes you can. All flights arrive into the shared terminals so if you have no rush to collect bags, you could wander for a couple hours.

Thanks for the great tips. We arrive at Changi at 8:00 am coming into terminal 2 and we will have checked luggage. Our next flight is to Siem Reap at 8:00 pm but we are flying on a different airline so our bags will not be checked through. I guess that means we will have to exit the airport and go through immigration after getting our bags. Is this correct? Can we then enter the airport and check-in for our 8:00 pm flight on Jetstar Asia? Not sure if they will let us check in that early.

You will have to exit the airport to collect your bags, but then would be subject to check-in times set by JetStar (which are usually around 2-3 hours before the flight). You do have the opportunity to visit the new Jewel terminal at Changi which is landside if you wanted to stay at the airport, or you could spend the day exploring Singapore. It's really easy to get to the city on the train, and there is luggage storage at the airport so you don't have to take your bags with you.

My husband and I will arrive at Changi airport around 6 AM. We are joining a cruise around 12 noon. Can we use any of the free tours you discussed? Can we see any of the areas in the airport you discussed? Also, is there a place in the airport that we can leave our suitcases. We have a medium-size suitcase each.

Hi Nasarin The free tours are intended for layover passengers. As you have indicated you have bags and will be joining a cruise, you would need to clear immigration and collect your bags on arrival which would put you landside at the airport. As such, you will only be able to access the areas outside the terminal - which include the new Jewel terminal.

According to my flight schedule I'm travelling on transit flight and I will spend the time around 14 hours at Changi airport and then again flying to Malaysia. Therefore I need to clarify following details; 1. If I need to go on city tour how can I manage my baggage at the airport. (Do I need to carry those baggage Check-in/Check-out or is there any place to keep those baggage) 2. Till I check-out from Changi airport can I travel all the terminals in there with my baggage. Please advise.

If you are on a true transit flight, your checked baggage will be flown straight through to your destination and you will not have to exit the airport to collect it. As such you will only have your hand luggage with you and can travel freely between all 4 terminals by either walking or taking the inter-terminal shuttles. There are also left luggage stations in each terminal where you can leave any items you don't want to carry around and/or while you take a city tour.

Hi Diane I'm afraid that you won't be able to use that time to explore the airside attractions in Singapore airport.

On arrival you will be required to enter Singapore via immigration in order to collect your bag (to remain inside the airport/airside you would require a boarding pass for a another flight.) Once you have collected your bags you will be able to explore the landside attractions at Singapore Airport, although these are limited and will require you to make your own way between terminals.

On any given Sunday, Singaporean families make a beeline for Changi Airport.  Their bags aren’t packed, they haven’t got their passports and they don’t have boarding passes. They don’t need them; they aren’t going anywhere. They’re at the airport because it’s just  that  good. There are so many things to keep travellers – and locals – entertained that it’s impossible to explore them all in one visit. Changi is one of the world’s busiest airports and it’s a strategic stopover between continents. If you’ve ever flown between Australia and the northern hemisphere, you’ve probably spent some time at Changi.

Zoom down four storeys on Singapore’s tallest slide. The slide, located in Terminal 3, is 12 metres high and thrillingly vertiginous (sliders can reach a speed of six metres per second).

Free Singapore tour

If you’re in Singapore for a few hours, take advantage of Changi Airport’s complimentary tours around the city. They take in sites such as the Merlion, the Esplanade and the towering Marina Bay Sands.

Butterfly Garden

Changi Airport proudly proclaims the Butterfly Garden to be the world’s first butterfly habitat in an airport. We would add that it has to be the world’s  only  butterfly habitat in an airport (prove us wrong). The steamy tropical garden is full of lush flowering plants, a six-metre waterfall and about 1000 beautiful butterflies.

Cactus Garden

Another unlikely nature-related exhibit at Changi Airport is the Cactus Garden, where visitors can explore a landscape of succulents from the deserts of the Americas, Africa and Asia – more than 100 of them.

Swimming Pool

Pack a swimsuit into your hand luggage so you can practice strokes in the rooftop pool as you watch the planes landing and taking off. The Aerotel Airport Transit Hotel in Terminal 1 also has a poolside bar and spa, for your holiday-extending pleasure.

Showers and spa

Break up a long-haul flight at one of  Changi’s  paid lounges . Let nimble fingers ease the tension of an eight-hour flight. 

Changi has free-to-use rest areas all over its three terminals. Stretch out full length for a snooze between flights.

It’s a brave parent who undertakes international travel with children. The sack of entertainment (games, iPad, snacks, colouring book and pencils, the kitchen sink) parents shoulder can wear thin over the course of a flight but the enormous, slide-riddled playgrounds in terminals 1, 2 and 3 will keep kids aged one to 12 occupied for hours – possibly even long enough to wear them out for the next leg of the journey.

Sunflower Garden

Roam through a field of sunflowers atop the Transit Hall. The vitamin D can help ward off jet lag and, if nothing else, the sight of a cheery yellow sunflower makes everything seem a bit brighter.

Enchanted Garden

Motion sensors trigger the Enchanted Garden so that it becomes a magical living, breathing world as visitors wander past. There are lighting displays underfoot, sounds and four giant glass sculptures filled with fresh flowers and ferns.

Hawker feast

Hainanese chicken rice, nasi lemak, laksa, kaya toast and kopi – if you missed out on any of the  must-try  dishes during a sojourn in Singapore, try them at Changi. This stunning glass and steel dome development (by Safdie Architects, the same folks behind the iconic Marina Bay Sands), has got it all – gardens, attractions, activity, areas, retail, dining, and more. And of course, that cascading waterfall in the middle of the Shiseido Forest Valley.

A coveted stopover destination for travellers, Jewel Changi Airport is also a popular mall destination for Singaporeans. While the crazy queues seen at Jewel's initial mall opening have died down, it remains a magnet for travellers and locals in search of things to do, eat, and shop. To help you sort through Jewel Changi Airport's many offerings, here's a guide to the best things to check out.

Hike an indoor forest

Escape the busy airport and into a lush green sanctuary that is the Shiseido Forest Valley. Accessible from every level, the tranquil retreat is a reminder of Singapore and a garden city even before you step out of the airport. The forest valley is also the best place to stare in awe of the HSBC Rain Vortex, the largest indoor waterfall in the world – and the crown jewel of well, Jewel Changi Airport. 

Catch a film

Live large and catch a movie at the Shaw Theatres in IMAX. Whether you're in Singapore on transit or an Eastie spending a weekend at Singapore's newest mall concept, watching a film is the best way to kill some time. Choose from the latest releases and end the day on a high, dining at one of the eateries in the mall. 

Bounce on nets

Immerse yourself in the recreational wonderland that is the Canopy Park located on the top floor of Jewel. Leave your fear of heights at home and get your heart racing bouncing on nets and going down giant slides, all while taking in the views.

A world away from all the shops, the Petal Garden at the top of the Jewel Changi Airport is where you can enjoy creative displays of seasonal flowers from around the world. The garden in bloom will also feature some interesting installations making it one of the more Instagrammable spots in Jewel Changi Airport. 

Get lost in a maze

Weave your way around the largest hedge maze in Singapore. Don't get too cocky, we heard that you should allow yourself at least 30 minutes in the maze. At the core of it is the watchtower where you will be rewarded with some of the best views. 

The Backyard Bakers

Bundt By The Backyard Bakers is famed for its blackout brownies – and rightfully so, as you'd be hard-pressed to find brownies as rich and chocolatey than the ones here. Now, you can get these delightful bakes in the East, at its second outlet in Jewel Changi Airport. Besides the brownies, you can also buy its fragrant madeleines, chunky banana bread, brookies (a cross between a cookie and a brownie) and beverages. 

Birds of Paradise

• Ice-cream parlours

When you're done with shopping at In Good Company, grab a scoop from ice-creamery Birds of Paradise. There are perpetual long queues for its artisanal gelato created from herbs, fruits, spices and botanical ingredients – think flavours like Masala Spice and White Chrysanthemum – wrapped in a fragrant and freshly-made thyme-infused waffle cone. 

Whether you’re a tourist on the hunt for local cuisine or a Singaporean craving Peranakan comfort food when you touch down, Violet Oon Singapore is sure to hit the spot. Gather around the communal tables at the brand's biggest outlet to date and dig into  Violet's signatures like the beef rendang ($28), dry laksa ($29) and ngoh hiang ($20). Remember to get some roti prata ($2) to mop up any leftover gravy, and round off the meal with pulut hitam with coconut ice cream ($14) for dessert. 

Elfuego by Collin's

• Pan-European

For an elevated Halal European dining experience, look no further than Elfuego by Collin's. Located at Jewel Changi Airport, this restaurant offers a wide spread of hot and cold appetisers, seafood mains, and charcoal-grilled meats. Start off with seared Hokkaido scallops ($20) or tuna tataki ($12) before moving on to mains that include baked Tasmanian ocean trout ($29) and Wagyu flank steak ($32). If you've got a big group of people with big appetites, then go for the hefty charcoal-grilled Australian Black Angus Tomahawk steak ($139). Want a good meal at a steal? We recommend coming for the two-course or three-course lunch set, which only costs $19.90 and $25.90 respectively. 

• Fast food outlets

After a long sixteen years since its departure from Singapore, A&W returns to make our Coney dog and root beer float dreams come true. Located at basement two of Jewel Changi Airport, the 80-seater joint is open till late, serving both famished international travellers and locals looking for a hot of nostalgia. All its classics are on the menu, including the famous root beer float ($3.50), chicken or beef coney dog ($5.20) and curly fries ($3.60). It also includes some new-to-Singapore creations that have become hits around the region. There's the Golden Aroma Chicken ($3.20) from A&W Indonesia and Cream Cheese Chicken or Beef Burger ($4.90), which are popular in its Okinawa outlets.

Shake Shack

Shake Shack at Jewel Changi Airport is Singapore – and Southeast Asia's – very first outlet. Now that the insane queues have disappeared, you can comfortably head down to find out why this New York-born burger brand has grown to cult status despite its humble origins as a hot dog cart. Other than its juicy all-natural Angus beef burgers, do also try Singapore exclusives like the Pandan Shake ($7.80) or Jewela Melaka ($7.50/$9.50), a vanilla custard blended with coconut salted caramel, shortbread, gula melaka and Lemuel chocolate chunks.

• Pan-South American

Helmed by chef Daniel Chavez, the culinary mastermind behind Ola Cocina del Mar and Tono Cevicheria, Tonito is an all-Latin American dining experience where you can savour dishes from Mexico, Brazil, Cuba, Colombia, Argentina and beyond. As Mexican folk music plays in the background, tuck into hearty plates of tacos, quesadillas and anticuchos, Peruvian-style grilled skewers while soaking in the atmosphere and the majestic view of Jewel Changi's indoor waterfall. Hot tip: dine between 7.30pm to 8.30pm to catch the five-minute light and sound show.

Taste the flavours of Southwestern China at the largest Yunnan food and beverage chain in the world. Yun Nans has over 150 outlets in China and is making Singapore, and Jewel Changi Airport, its first international outpost. The restaurant specialises in highland cuisine, as there are seven tropical belts in Yunnan, offering the region a diversity of ingredients you've probably never tried before. Yun Nans brings most of its ingredients in fresh from the province to make its signature dishes like the Steamed Pot Chicken Soup ($23.90), which uses steam and condensation to create a heady chicken broth best eaten with a plate of cold rice noodles, chicken, vegetables and egg tossed in a vinegary sauce. If you're up for a spicy challenge, get the beef stew in copper pot ($24.90), an intense beef broth filled with beef shin, tendon and offal peppered with a generous amount of chilli.    

Take a short break amidst all the shopping at Lemuel Chocolate’s Beanfolks– Singapore’s first-ever hot chocolate bar. With a variety of customisation options available, customers can tailor their drink to their exact preferences. Beanfolks offers seven different chocolates from different countries, and over 20 infusions ranging from vanilla to roasted rice, in an attempt to encourage customers to experiment and create their ideal chocolate flavour profile. Although most chocolate drinks tend to be rich and creamy, Beanfolks keeps it light and flavourful, avoiding an over-cloying drink even when choosing sweeter options such as white chocolate and sweet foam.

Not only is the Starbucks at Jewel Changi Airport the brand's first flagship store in Singapore, it's also the largest. Occupying two storeys, the outlet celebrates the journey the brand has taken in Singapore thus far, with art that highlights both the brand and local elements. If you love studying at Starbucks and the airport, this massive space offers free Wi-Fi, plenty of seats and power plugs alongside a wide selection of flagship-exclusive drinks and treats. Sample locally inspired offers like Hainanese chicken rice quinoa salad, satay chicken ciabatta and Milo tiramisu. Or if you want to stick to coffee, the store offers cups made through manual brewing methods like the Chemex or siphon brew. For something more refreshing on a hot day, check out what's on offer at its four-tap nitro bar. Favourites include the nitro flat white, nitro caramel macchiato and nitro green tea, which we dare say are smoother and richer than their hand-brewed counterparts.

Watch the world (and Changi Airport's Skytrains) go by at Lady M's fifth local outlet. The spacious café is located along the mega-mall's wide walkway, making it an airy and open space ideal for people watching as you dig your fork into its signature mille crêpes. Also try its savoury items, including bites like crab salad on toast, cauliflower soup and chicken and pesto sandwiches.

Bring a slice of Lady M home with you, no matter your destination. The Jewel Changi boutique sells frozen mille crépe cakes as well as exclusive bon bons. There are over 23 different types available, including cocktail-inspired gummies like the Gin Tonic Casino as well as flavoured nuts and chocolates like the Cognac Orange Liqueur Chocolate. The bon bons come packed in sets of three, five and eight, and each box depicts the iconic architecture of different cities: La Mansarde (three-pack),  Paris’ Haussman-style architecture; The Brownstone (five-pack), New York City's townhouses and Qing Zhuan Dai Wa (eight-pack), Beijing's traditional hutong homes.

Don Don Donki

• Grocery stores

Don Don Donki is ubiquitous across the island, but its outlet at Jewel Changi Airport stands out. This store not only has aviation-inspired decor, but is also home to the chain's first Halal food corner in Singapore. Besides a massive variety of Japanese-imported items, the Jewel Changi Airport outlet also has a new food hall, complete with a made-to-order sushi bar, freshly-fried takoyaki, and soon, even a mochi-making machine. Thirsty? You can slake it at the sake bar which houses more than 40 types of sake. 

In Good Company

With pastel-coloured walls and high ceilings, what draws you in the store is how much it looks like a museum. In Good Company offers visitors a retail experience beyond just clothes. The curated collection includes their womenswear, menswear and children's wear which is known for its timeless silhouettes and quality fabrics; and also books, accessories, scented candles and chocolates. 

Pokemon Center Singapore

The first centre to open outside Japan, the Pokémon Center Singapore is an exact replica of the original. The centre is a specialist store for all things Pokémon and where to collect 'em plush toys, video games, trading cards, Pokémon apparel and other official merchandise. The store in Jewel Changi Airport also stocks Singapore-exclusive official merchandise which you can't get in the Japan store.
