Audition Requirements

Please prepare a short monologue (no more than 1 minute) and one song that you are comfortable performing (Disney is OK!) Monologues are available if you need one, simply indicate that you would like one when you request an audition.

Please prepare a short monologue (no more than 1 minute) and TWO contrasting songs (16-32 bars) from the classical/traditional musical theatre canon i.e.: golden age musicals (no pop/rock or contemporary.)

Adults who are only auditioning for a non-singing role just need to prepare a monologue.

Youth and Adults

Please keeping in mind the following:

You could receive redirects of your monologue or song, so they should be memorized. Please make sure you are very comfortable with your material.

We will likely only hear one song – the second song should be a contrasting selection, should we want to hear something additional.

Songs should showcase your vocal range and storytelling ability. Think about the character that you are auditioning for and the types of songs they sing!

We may cut off the songs, or we may ask you to stop mid-song, give you a re-direct, and ask you to continue.

Please no songs from The Sound of Music - we’ll hear those on call-back day.

Please help the pianist to help you!

Make sure your sheet music is:

  • In the proper key for the pianist
  • Hole-punched and placed in a binder
  • Preferably double-sided
  • Clearly marked for the accompanist with any cuts or repeats

Please refrain from taping together sheets of music and do not bring single loose sheets of music.

No recorded accompaniments.

Online Form

Once you book an audition you will be sent a link to our online audition form. Please make sure to fill this out as soon as possible. As part of the form you will be asked to provide a full list of conflicts. Be as thorough as you can. If there are changes in conflicts during the audition process, please inform the Producers, or bring an updated list to the audition and/or call backs. The information provided will be used when creating the rehearsal schedule. Adding more or significant conflicts after casting may result in removal from the show.

Callback Information

Should you receive a callback, please assume you will need to be there for the entire session. We will provide a schedule for the session. Our intention is to start the session with children/youth. Once you have been released you are welcome to stay to watch the rest of the callback. It’s always nice for folks to have an audience that isn’t the panel.

Those called back will be asked to prepare specific scenes and musical selections from the show. These will be sent along with callback notifications and will also be available for preview online ahead of time.

Callback material does not need to be memorized but you should be familiar enough with it that you can participate and connect with your scene partners and the panel.

Note: not every role will require a callback.

Dance

There will be a dance/movement call at the callbacks for the select characters that will be more heavily involved in dance/movement throughout the show. You will be advised if you are required to participate in this with your invitation for a callback.

All those participating in the dance/movement call should please bring comfortable, non-restrictive clothing, appropriate footwear (sneakers/running shoes, jazz shoes, or character shoes) and a ‘can-do’ attitude!

Participation in a theatre production requires a tremendous time commitment so please carefully consider whether you are willing and able to make the commitment. The number of other commitments you have should help you determine if you have the time to be in this production.

The production commitment for Sound of Music will be September 4, 2024 to November 23, 2024 and November 30, 2024. If you are cast in this show you must be available for all rehearsals (unless a conflict was stated on your audition form prior to casting) as well as all performances. At the time of the audition there will be an opportunity to state conflict dates. Please be thorough. If you have conflicts for any of the technical rehearsals at the theatre and any of the performance dates, you are not eligible to audition.

Before we move into the theatre, rehearsals will be Monday and Wednesday evenings (7:00 - 10:00) and Sunday afternoons (12:00 to 6:00). Once we move into the theatre there will be additional and longer/later rehearsals added. Please see a full list earlier in this document.

All performers in the show will be given a rehearsal schedule at the first rehearsal. Cast will only be required to attend rehearsal if they are indicated on the schedule.

Please note it is a lot of work to reschedule a rehearsal because of last minute conflicts. Conflicts added after the time of auditions may result in removal from the show or numbers in the show.

Richard Rodgers,

Richard Rodgers (1902–1979) was an American composer who worked primarily in musical theatre. With 43 Broadway musicals and over 900 songs to his credit, he was one of the most well-known American composers of the 20th century, and his compositions had a significant influence on popular music. He is known for his songwriting partnerships with lyricist Lorenz Hart and Oscar Hammerstein II. With Hart, he wrote musicals throughout the 1920s and 1930s, including Pal Joey, A Connecticut Yankee, On Your Toes  and Babes in Arms . With Hammerstein, he wrote musicals through the 1940s and 1950s, such as Oklahoma!, Flower Drum Song, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I and The Sound of Music . His collaborations with Hammerstein are celebrated for bringing Broadway musicals to a new maturity by telling stories that were focused on characters and drama rather than the earlier light-hearted entertainment of the genre.

Oscar Hammerstein II,

Oscar Hammerstein II (1895–1960) was an American lyricist, librettist, theatrical producer, and (usually uncredited) director in musical theatre for nearly 40 years. He won eight Tony Awards and two Academy Awards for Best Original Song. Many of his songs are standard repertoire for vocalists and jazz musicians. He co-wrote 850 songs. He is best known for his collaborations with composer Richard Rodgers, as the duo Rodgers and Hammerstein, whose musicals include Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I  and The Sound of Music . Described by Stephen Sondheim as an “experimental playwright”, Hammerstein helped bring American musicals to a new maturity by focusing on stories and characters rather than the light-hearted entertainment that the musicals had been known for beforehand. He also collaborated with Jerome Kern (with whom he wrote Show Boat ), Vincent Youmans, Rudolf Friml, Richard A. Whiting and Sigmund Romberg.

Two years later, they wrote another Cole Porter show, Red, Hot and Blue . Their first straight play, Life with Father , opened in 1936 and holds the record for the longest-running play on Broadway, at 3,224 performances. The touring company is currently in previews at Zhuhai, China’s Jinwan Art Center, before traveling to Shanghai and around the country for the following 30 weeks.

The Best Audition Songs for The Sound of Music – by Character

Do you have an upcoming audition for The Sound of Music ? Well unless you have specifically been asked to sing a song from the show that you’re auditioning for, it’s generally best not to. That said, you should still show off similar vocals and personality. So here’s our list of audition songs for The Sound of Music ,  broken down by character.

Since The Sound of Music is a late golden-age musical, the songs below are all from golden-age/post-golden age musicals as well. In addition, there is a timeless/classic vibe to many of the following in order to match the style of the show.

Please note:  This post contains affiliate links. This means that if you choose to make a purchase through one of the following links, we may earn a small commission on the sale at no additional cost to you. See our  disclosure  for more info.

Step 1 : Read your audition details

Please read your audition details carefully, as they sometimes specify the type of song they’d like to hear (a ballad, something uptempo, etc.). Make sure to select a song that’s appropriate for your specific casting call.

Step 2: Get to know the show

In casting calls, they often ask for you to be “familiar with the show”. And even if it’s not requested, it’s generally assumed. One way to do this is to read through the synopsis or libretto for The Sound of Music ➝ while listening to the The Sound of Music cast album➝ . Or you can watch the classic film➝ .

Step 3: Pick an audition song

Next, based on your personality and  vocal type , decide whether you’d like to audition for the ensemble or a specific character. Just keep in mind that if you audition for a specific character, you still might not be chosen for that particular role.

There’s usually a spot on the audition form asking if you are open to being in the ensemble or accepting a different role. I would suggest ticking that box and taking whatever you are offered. Every role is important, and you will earn valuable experience in a show.

And on that same note, even if you audition for the ensemble (rather than a specific character), there’s always a chance of being cast in a leading or supporting role!

To summarize, keep an open mind and try not to take the process too seriously. And when you’re ready, choose the song that you feel most comfortable with from the list below.

Hello, I am a 15 year old tenor. I would like to audition for The Sound of Music, and I am not sure what song I should use for this. Is it fine to audition with a song other than the ones included in the production one is auditioning for? Thank you so very much for your kind and wise input!

Hi Philip! So exciting that you have auditions for The Sound of Music coming up! I would suggest reading your audition details super carefully, as they will usually state what type of song they expect you to prepare. But if nothing is mentioned, it’s generally best to choose a song that is *not* from the show you’re auditioning for. That said, sometimes they do request that you sing a song from the show – it always depends! But if you’re still unsure and would like to send over an email of your audition requirements, I’d love to take a look!

hi, my daughter is 11 and has soprano can you recommend a song!!!

Hey Lisa!! Of course. If your daughter is 11, I would recommend having her try out the song ideas for either Brigitta or Louisa above! And have her go with whichever one she feels most excited to sing. Have so much fun with it! 🙂

Any suggestions for a Louisa or Briggita audition? My daughter is 13, soprano. 😊

Hi Heather! I just added a few suggestions for Brigitta and Louisa for you. Hope this helps! 🙂

Hi! I’m auditioning for the part of Louisa soon, and my audition information asks me to sing a Golden Age song for my audition. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hi Eva! I just revisited the audition songs for Louisa and made a slight adjustment so that they are now all from golden age musicals. The song from State Fair is originally from the 1945 film, which technically classifies it as a golden age song as well. Also, if none of those feel just right on your voice, you can try out the suggestions under Brigitta!

I will definitely look into the songs! Thank you so much!

CSO Fellows share how the program helps them grow as musicians

2023/24 CSO Fellows Gabriela Lara, Jesús Linárez and Olivia Reyes

Todd Rosenberg Photography

Three string players — violinists Gabriela Lara and Jesús Linárez and bassist Olivia Reyes — currently participate in the CSO Fellowship program. As CSO Fellows, these musicians rehearse and perform with the CSO at least 20 weeks per season, work with top conductors, and receive training and mentorship from CSO musicians. The program aims to help early career musicians become better equipped to win auditions with top U.S. orchestras, including the CSO.

Gabriela Lara, the Michael and Kathleen Elliott Fellow, was the first musician selected for the CSO Fellowship and is finishing her second season in the program. After that, she will begin a new job with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. Jesús Linárez and Olivia Reyes are first-year fellows and will continue in these roles in the 2024/25 Season. Read about their impressions of the program in the Q&A below.

Do you have a favorite memory from your experiences as a CSO Fellow this season?

Gabriela: My favorite memory from my second year as a fellow would definitely be the European Tour. It’s such an incredible experience to travel across all of these countries and have the opportunity to be in so many amazing concert halls with the orchestra playing the highest level of music.

Jesús: It’s difficult to put one specific memory above the others, but maybe my favorite memory of the season so far was the week of Strauss’ Death and Transfiguration and Lutosławski’s Concerto for Orchestra with Maestro Jakub Hrůša. These were two pieces that I’d never played or even heard before. I felt the concerts that week had a special energy.

Olivia: One of my favorite memories is being at the rehearsal where Klaus Mäkelä was announced the next music director. Playing Shostakovich 10 with him was one of the most energetic and exhilarating weeks I’ve played with the Chicago Symphony.

Could you share something you’ve learned or a way you’ve grown this season through the CSO Fellowship?

Gabriela: I’m always impressed by each musician and person that is part of the CSO and their responsibility for not only the job but also for the music, their peers and what it means to be part of this organization. They lead by example.

Jesús: Something that has really stuck out is that I think I have improved my sound. Being able to sit next to great violinists with so many different kinds of sounds has helped me a lot in improving and finding my own kind of sound.

Olivia: I would say the biggest skill I’ve learned this year is how to be a good section member. In school, it’s all about practicing alone and learning excerpts, but once you are in an orchestra, it’s not about you anymore. You have to constantly think about what is happening around you and how to adjust every second. It was very eye opening for me during my first week with the CSO, but it also excited me to know that this would be a new goal for me to work on.

What are your hopes for your second year as a CSO Fellow?

Jesús: My hope for my second year as a CSO Fellow is to play as much as I can with the orchestra, learn more from the musicians and hopefully get a position in one of the top orchestras.

Olivia: Something I really enjoyed this year was having the opportunity to learn so much and to push my abilities to a higher level. All I have ever wanted was to play with an orchestra that pushes and challenges me to be better and better each week. I am really looking forward to continuing to grow as a musician and an individual next year.

How did the CSO Fellowship help to prepare you for your new job in the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra?

Gabriela: Just by being in this environment continuously, it automatically makes you become a better musician in general. Nonetheless, the lessons that I get to take with musicians of the orchestra throughout the year as part of the CSO Fellowship program have helped me immensely to prepare for orchestra auditions.
