Spain bike tour reviews.

Very well organised tour. The route notes were extremely detailed and helpful as the route was quite complicated some days - presumably to avoid busy roads. However the country wasn’t good for enjoyable cycling, being treeless and agricultural, and apart from the White Villages I really only enjoyed the scenery on the third day from Montellano to Arcos when the route went through the hills and along the river on a good Via Verde. On the last day getting out of Jerez took an hour then soon after it was semi-industrial wasteland. The Via Verde between Seville and Carmona was in terrible condition with deep ruts and sand. I was also unlucky to get a flat- the seal at the tube valve failed- and I had terrible trouble changing the tube- the plastics levers not strong enough and the pump nozzle completely stuck. I left a note to the bike hire.
it was a wonderful journey. A beautiful route with breathtaking viewpoints. Excellent hotels and good guidance and support from Iberia Tours. Highly recommended!
The over all experience was fine, excellent hotels, first class bikes and the navigation system fairly good. My negative comments are the information flow and guidence, especially in the beginning, how to check in to the tour, the reception and so forth. We had expected ore formally start and some advice according to this special route. It was a need for this in relation to utility of battery function and consuming of power. We had some problems in the Tramuntana, near Sierra de Tramuntana, ran out of electricity and a little help to get from the organizer. We had the general feeling in the tour that we were more or less on our own. That can also be good

With an exotic history and a strong, enduring culture, Spain is also one of the most intriguing countries in Europe. Landmarks like the Moorish and Royal monuments scattered across the Spanish countryside give you a glimpse of what this country once was: the most powerful force in Europe and the New World. Centuries later, old and new live together comfortably here. On the Camino visit ancient cathedrals and monuments to Pilgrims who have been traversing Northern Spain for thousands of years. Meanwhile, you’ll enjoy seeing the vibrant and modern trends in the larger towns across this expansive country.

I was in a group of 10 Alaskan women, all friends, traveling together to escape the demands of everyday life! Our experience with Live Love Ride was one we will all never forget. We were in excellent hands with our Mammas. We nicknamed our guides Mammas, because that was exactly what they were. We were well looked after, fed the most amazing foods, and completely safe. I highly recommend this company to anyone looking for the adventure of a lifetime and lifelong friends. We are begging our Mammas to come to Alaska so we can guide them through our mountains!

Best trip ever!

This was my first bike tour and it was the best vacation I have taken. Traveling town to town, over varied terrain including beach boardwalks, medieval cobblestone roads, dirt paths, rocky trails, and cruising through small towns, thriving cities, beautiful agricultural lands and vineyards, and bisecting gorgeous pine forests, fed all my senses. The boutique hotels they chose for us were each special in their own way. In addition to the exceptional customer service and outstanding hotel choices, we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the restaurant recommendations; I strongly suggest going with their choices. Portugal and Spain are each beautiful countries and the culture changed more than I expected as we moved along the route. Experiencing the region on two wheels gave us the opportunity to experience these countries using all five senses, at a perfect pace to take it all in. We Lived, We Loved and We Rode our way through one of the best experiences of our lives.

Mallorca with Live Love Ride

The only way to really experience Mallorca is to ride through it, all the senses are turned on. The moments between the highlights provide a preamble for the punctuations of action and activity. LLR’s team knows the best level of service for the riders to enjoy the journey with comfort and support, while still challenging everyone to own their journey. Highly recommended team!

We had a fantastic bike tour in Mallorca with team Ricardo and Juan. Our e-bikes were top of the line assisting us in ultra hot 106 degrees and amazing ‘climbs’ followed by stunning switchback downhills. Our cycling routes are some of the best in Spain. Hotels were beautiful and provided plenty of serious r&r between rides (Cava was on the breakfast menu!). Mallorca is a cyclists’ heaven. Do this trip while you can. You won’t be disappointed!

Cyclist in Colombres

Over hills and almost flat country roads you cycle past the coast ranges of El Cuera and El Sueve in the shadow of the impressive peaks of the  Picos de Europa . Passing tiny coves and charming coastal villages, you ride from  Cantabria  into  Asturias . Some of your routes follow sections of the Pilgrims’ Route to Santiago de Compostela so you will find ruins and Romanesque chapels along the way.

Saint James shell

Our itinerary follows this authentic route, which was very popular in the early Middle Ages when pilgrims tried to avoid the constant conflict between Christian and Moorish kingdoms in Central Spain. In this pilgrimage you cycle along the ‘ Green Spain ’, going through varied lanscapes of   Asturias   and   Galicia.

Mallorca lanscape

Brimming with contrasts, Mallorca truly runs the gamut. Gentle hills roll toward seaside cliffs, Mediterranean forests give way to pristine coves and a massive limestone range looms to the west. Embrace this inspiring scenery on easy country routes and more challenging climbs and revel in the island’s heritage, hospitality and cuisine.

Cyclist andalucia

This cycling tour also called ' Ruta de los Olivos ' goes along paths and tranquil roads traversing a sea of olive trees and Mediterranean woods. This less-known area in the North of  Malaga  still preserves most of its enchanting white washed villages, scattered along the slopes of the Sierra Subbética slopes.

Spain cycling tours: An (unbiased) comparison of 10 top Spain bike tour companies

Trying to decide between the best Spain cycling tours can be a daunting business. The cycling tours Spain has to offer are many and varied; sifting between the various websites, trying to compare companies can be time consuming and boring.

So, we’ve written this article to try and provide a starting point for your research when planning your cycling trips in Spain.

We’ve taken ten of the best-known companies that offer Spain bike trips and compared them. We hope this helps reduce your research time!

Let us know what you think in the comments below – and if you’ve ever booked a bike tour in Spain, we’d love to hear your experiences too!

This article is based on the information on each operator’s website. We’ve done our best to ensure our summary is accurate, but please double-check everything with the operator since the information on their website could be out of date or could have changed since we wrote the article. It’s even conceivable (heaven forbid!) that we may have made a mistake.

The prices usually assume two people occupying a room. If you want single occupancy, expect to pay more. Also carefully check the trip inclusions – we’ve just summarised the situation below and the inclusions may well vary for each trip.

Please also note that some Spain bike tour operators offer road cycling or leisure cycling holidays and some companies offer both. As this article focuses on road bike tours in Spain, companies that only offer leisure cycling holidays aren’t included in this list.

In 2024 we worked with Sierra Sports & Tours on our Girona guide. You can find our article on bike tours in Girona, here . We also worked with Cycle Tours Catalonia on an article about gravel cycling in/around Girona and with Saddle Skedaddle on an article about the Camino de Santiago in Spain.

We also work with two Spanish operators not mentioned here because they currently only offer one Spanish trip, an   Andalucia cycling tour  ( Wild Atlantic Cycling Tours) or are based in just one area of Spain ( Girona Cycling ). Want to know which other cycling tour operators we worked with in 2022?  Read this.

Cycling In Spain: The 7 Most Incredible Routes for Bike Touring

  • Updated on: May 26, 2021

This article may contain affiliate.  For more information, please see our disclaimer  here.

Table of Contents

As a pair of Dutch girls, I guess we can say that cycling is more or less in our blood! Our adventures have taken us around the world, and more often than not, we’ve enjoyed the sights from the saddle of our trusty bicycles. However, I’ve got to say that bike touring in Spain for a month was one of my favorite bicycle trips of all time!

Cycling in Spain is perhaps the best way to see this incredible country. The sleepy, rustic villages shouldn’t be rushed through, and riding through the beautiful sunshine through the awesome scenery is pure joy! There are a number of official bicycle tours in Spain, with well-signed routes traveling along mostly vehicle-free tracks.

Plus, the weather is almost always gorgeous, with long sunny days well into autumn. It’d be amazing to do a full bike tour of Spain if time allowed, and it’s something we’ve dreamed of! But, for something a little more manageable, the following 7 bike touring routes in Spain are absolutely spectacular.

So, saddle up and let’s find out more!

1. Ruta De La Plata (The Silver Route)

Cycling in Spain through the historical town of Sevilla

  • Total distance: 936 km (582 miles)
  • Total elevation: 20,954 m (68,750 ft)

Also known as the Way of St. James, this is an astounding route for soaking up both sunshine and a little Spanish history. Passing through breathtaking scenery, the route travels south to north, through western Spain, from Seville up to Gijón on the Bay of Biscay. It follows one of the oldest Roman trade routes in the country, taking in a number of charming, historic towns and villages.

Along the way, there are countless opportunities to spend a day out of the saddle, exploring ancient ruins, castles, churches, and amphitheaters. The route follows cycle paths for much of the way and, for the most part, avoids busy roads entirely. Passing through calm, rolling countryside with some climbing along the way, you don’t have to be super fit to complete the route. However, you’ll probably enjoy it more if you’ve done a little training in advance.

With plenty of charming cities and towns to stop off at along the way, you can really take your time with this route. It can normally be completed within 9 days of around 100 km (60 miles) each, though it’s easy to break it down or speed it up. There’s a slightly different version of this trail, which converts it into a pilgrim’s route leading to Santiago rather than Gijón.

Map not loading? Click  here  or on the title of the trail on the right corner of the map, to get more information.

2. Camino de Santiago

Camino de Santiago start

  • Total distance: 361km (225 miles)
  • Total elevation: 6,337 m (20,800 ft)

This classic pilgrim’s route is among the oldest cycling routes in Spain . Crossing the north of the country from east to west, the route starts in the beautifully Gothic León. From this stunning start point, the route winds through unspoiled countryside, taking in villages, farms, and medieval monasteries, before culminating in the legendary Santiago.

Along the way you’ll follow the iconic seashell signs as they direct you through a mixed terrain of quiet minor roads, designated cycle routes, and the occasional off-road section. The rural countryside is pretty hilly, and you’ll need a fair level of fitness to enjoy it to the max. However, it’s possible to complete the trip in 6 moderate days, averaging around 54 km (33.5 miles).

The scenery along the route is as magnificent as it is varied, taking in grassy plains, woody mountains, lush green valleys, and rolling farmlands. There are also plenty of opportunities to explore the local area and enjoy the delicacies of the region, from tasty wines to moreish local cheeses.

3. Mallorca Coast to Coast

mallorca coast biketouring

  • Total distance: 100 km (147 miles)
  • Total elevation: 1,580 m (5,183 ft)

Mallorca is a stunningly beautiful island to go cycling in Spain and perhaps best known for its luxurious sandy beaches. However, there’s much more to discover on this Paradise Island, and this cycling route takes in all of the best sights. It offers a wonderful mix of coastal areas and the inland foothills of the Tramuntana mountains.

With tons of amazing family-run hotels and guesthouses on the island, it’s easy to adapt the route to your preference, with a fantastic place to stop each night. Most of the going is flat, on quiet, tarmac routes, with the occasional off-road sections. But take care on the couple of steep climbs you pass. Most days you can enjoy around 40 km (25 miles) of leisurely cycling, with plenty of time to enjoy the sights.

The route typically starts from the airport and ends in the beautiful cap Formenta. In between, you’ll visit sleepy rural villages, tranquil beaches, and cycle through unspoiled countryside. Mountain views abound, even though there are no real climbs on this route.

Tour Recommendation For a Day on the Bike on Mallorca:

4. the way of el cid.

The Way of El Cid start biketouring

  • Total distance: 1,100 km (685 miles)
  • Total elevation: 18,740 m (61,480 ft)

You’ll be cycling in the footsteps of legends on this incredible Spanish cycle route. Rodrigo Diaz, or El Cid, was a medieval knight in the 11th century, and remains a national hero. This cycle route follows his epic journey from Burgos to Valencia, crossing through an amazingly varied landscape.

Along the way you’ll ride through quaint, medieval villages, unspoiled countryside, mountains and valleys, and conquer hilltop fortresses. The main route takes in 1,100 km (685 miles), but there are a number of interesting side routes that are worth considering if you have time. These circular routes take in various additional historic sights and majestic landscapes, and increase the total route to around 2,000 km (1,245 miles).

Valencia coast

There are actually 2 different routes you can take; the paved route, or the mountain bike route. Both are well signed, and avoid busy roads for the most part. Mostly the going is easy to moderate, with the occasional climb. There are plenty of places to stop along the way, and you can split the journey up as it suits you, with 5 to 6 days being the average time taken.

5. Vía Verde (de la Sierra)

Cycling in Spain Vía Verde de la Sierra Spain Biking

  • Total distance: 36.5 km (23 miles)
  • Total elevation gain: 1,261m (4,135 ft)

Roughly translated to ‘green lanes’, the Vias Verdes stretch for more than 2,200 km in total, all across Spain. After countless failed railway projects, the old tracks were converted into 120 of these impressive routes. They’re well signed, mostly flat, and easily accessible for everyone from hikers and cyclists, to horse riders and even wheelchair users.

When cycling in Spain, they’re a fantastic place to meet fellow travelers, and offer up incredible scenery that takes in everything Spain has to offer. From medieval cities to humble rural villages, through mountain passes to lush green valleys, the green lanes guarantee an incredible adventure.

One of the best routes for cyclists is the Vía Verde de la Sierra from Olvera to Serrano. This fairly easy-going 36.5 km (23 mile) trail takes in 30 tunnels, 4 incredible viaducts, and various medieval villages. The route from Olvera is mostly flat or downhill, making it an easy trail for beginners.

6. Col de Puymorens

Col de Puymorens nature Spain biking

  • Total distance: 176 km (109 miles)
  • Total elevation: 4,144 m (13,595 ft)

This breathtaking looped route takes you on an adventure through the glorious Pyrenees. Winding through the gorgeous Catalonian landscape, you’ll dip briefly into France, before returning to the small Catolonian villages and towns. It’s possible to cycle on paved roads, as well as mountain bike tracks, but both are largely free of motorized traffic.

As such, it’s a peaceful and enjoyable route to cycle, and while there are inclines, there’s nothing too hard going. For the most part, the route is fairly moderate and anyone with a pretty good level of fitness should be okay.

Along the way, you’ll enjoy a wealth of charming towns and villages, and for foodies, incredible cuisine and wine (there are 18 Michelin Star restaurants in the region). The route is well-signed and open throughout the year, though spring and autumn are the best times to visit. There are also plenty of opportunities to leave the official route and explore the surroundings.

7. The Tour of Andalusia Route

Gibraltar Biking Spain

  • Total distance: 267 km (166 miles)
  • Total elevation: 6,733 m (22,089 ft)

This route is fantastic for cycling in Spain and gives you the opportunity to see the treasures of Andalusia in the south of Spain. An area famed for sandy beaches, desert landscapes, gorgeous towns, and awe-inspiring sierras. The route starts in the small town of Malaga, a cultural crossroads and the southernmost point of the Iberian Peninsula. After exploring Andalusia’s inland gems, you’ll return to the coast, with the route ending in another country: Gibraltar.

Along the way you’ll enjoy breathtaking scenery at almost every turn. Highlights include Ronda, an absolutely stunning mountaintop town, and epic national parks including Sierra de Grazalema. There are plenty of places to stop along the way, and incredible food and drink to enjoy.

The route is quite hard-going at times, with long, steep climbs. A good level of fitness is recommended to enjoy it to the fullest. However, it’s worth the effort, and the rewards are absolutely incredible!

From the coastal cities of Bilbao and San Sebastian to the cosmopolitan centers of Barcelona and Madrid, and the intricate Moorish architecture of Seville and Valencia, the sightseeing opportunities in Spain are as vast as they are rich.

A bike tour of Barcelona is the best way to begin to cover the inexhaustible attractions and irresistible appeal of Catalonia’s powerhouse. Take the Bohemian Barcelona E-Bike Tour to discover the lively Gothic Quarter and free-spirited Born neighborhood. Alternatively, if the city’s architecture has you awe-struck, take the Gaudi’s Barcelona E-Bike Tour to discover the city’s living legacy as the project of one of the world’s most innovative architects.

Bilbao and San Sebastian both lie on Spain’s Basque Coast and offer their own unique introductions to the distinctive Basque culture. Take a tour in Bilbao for the very best of the region’s renowned gastronomy and the great Guggenheim Museum. Meanwhile, visitors to San Sebastian should expect to encounter some of the most beautiful coastlines on the Iberian peninsula during a city tour.

Cycle around Cadiz for its ancient walls and bustling El Pópulo neighborhood, or pedal through Palma de Mallorca on a day tour that celebrates this Balearic island’s beauty. Meander through Madrid on a city tour with the help of an e-bike, stopping at Retiro Park, Almudena Cathedral, and numerous other essential sightseeing destinations.

Cycling in Seville is improved with the knowledge of your local guide, who’ll give you the very best recommendations for your time in the ‘Pearl of Andalusia’. Or, if you’re visiting Valencia, take the Valencia Highlights Bike Tour to take it all in, in a city where medieval meets modern, including stops at the Turia Gardens and the Quart Towers.

“Any reasonable, sentient person who looks at Spain, comes to Spain, eats in Spain, drinks in Spain, they’re going to fall in love. Otherwise, there’s something deeply wrong with you. This is the dream of all the world.”

Cycling The Northern Camino

Stroud, U.K.

Day 1. Bilbao to Santillana del Mar via Castro Urdiales

Ride : 38km |Elevation Gain : 400 m Or 58 km / 560 m ascent Meet in Bilbao and take a short transfer out to the ancient Coastal town of Castro Urdiales. Cycle along the coast, sometimes kind, sometimes cruel as these mariners of this area know! Stop off for lunch to enjoy this area’s specialities of fresh sardines and anchovies cooked over a spit, a great way to appreciate the hard work of the fishing communities. The Destination is a hideaway, with an array of medieval monument buildings, as if you’ve stepped back 500 years. Our hotel tonight is a highlight situated right in the midst of this beautiful village. Option : We recommend you arrive the day before to explore Bilbao a wonderful city of culture, and home to the wonderful silvery Frank Gehry creation of the Guggenheim Modern Art Museum .

Day 2. Santillana to Fuente Dé, the Picos de Europa

Ride : Up to 75 km | Elevation Gain :  850 m  Head out of Santillana and start the ride touching the coast, passing Comillas, to visit a famous Gaudi designed home! Today’s route takes in the Picos, often voted as one of the most beautiful spots in Europe. Pedal from the coast after visiting the pretty seaside village of San Vicente de la Barquera and up an awesome gorge to the mountain village of Potes, and on to Fuente Dé, underneath the mountains, our base for the next 2 evenings.  The Parador hotel here is a lovely spot underneath the rocky cliffs of this National Park with its wild diversity.

Day 3. Fuente Dé, the Picos de Europa

Picos de Europa Rest or Hike Day – 8 km  A rest day in the mountain lair, where you have the option to visit via cable car, the Col of Fuente De (a gentler ascent than cycling!). Eagles soar here and we really hope for clear skies, the views are stupendous! Enjoy a mountain walk with views of the amazing peaks, stopping for lunch in a rural lodge. From this picturesque high, head down to our mountain retreat hotel or indeed stay ensconced all day in our comfortable hotel. A micro-climate, it grows its own grapes and they pack a punch in the potent grape brandy, orujo, distilled in town. Also worth trying are other “safer” treats like fine cheeses, honey and regional favourites like “cocido lebaniego” (mountain stew). You will be converted to highland living.

Day 4. Potes to Cangas de Onís

Ride : Up to 93 km | Elevation Gain : 850 m  Pedal down the smooth hairpins of the San Glorio pass from a height of 1206 metres. The mountain scenery is breath taking. The roads today are some of the most beautiful in Spain. Cangas is a lively place in Asturias and is famous for its cider, poured over the head into your small glass! Surrounded by mountains and forests, this town has a fascinating slice of history, heavenly dreams await you!

Day 5. Cangas de Onís to Ribadeo

Ride : 53 km | Elevation Gain : 950 m  We cycle out in this picture postcard perfect landscape with the high Picos mountains all around us. Take care to avoid the free roaming cows! After lunch we take a longer van transfer (1 1/2 hours) to the Destination  town of Ribadeo in Galicia and have a free night to enjoy this remarkable seaside place on the Camino. Ribadeo boasts of being close to what is considered one of Spain´s most beautiful beaches – Cathedral beach, a natural Monument which we will visit. Our Parador hotel tonight has a flare of real Galician charm, and the fresh air here will ensure a good night’s rest for tomorrow’s ride.

Day 6. Ribadeo to Arzúa

Ride : 56 km | Elevation Gain :  630 m This is rolling countryside of farm pastures of the Terra Chá region and around Arzuá, of Galicia. A beautiful ride, we make our way through these roads well trodden by pilgrims on the Camino for centuries. You will see the tell tale signs of those walking the Camino, with backpack and staff and the distinctive Seashell marking the ways. Our pretty rustic stone hotel was built in the 18th century and has been restored with joy, keeping a traditional feel to it with lovely gardens. The quaint stone walled courtyard, birdsong and it’s ambience will wish you had more time to spend here!  Relax before a group dinner and pickup a glass of wine!

Day 7. To Santiago de Compostela

] Ride : 40 km | Elevation Gain : 610 m  We head in one direction…to the cathedral with a few interesting stops along the way including a Camino refuge and monastery which has been left in time. It is an exciting end, travelling with other pilgrims making our way to the heart of this venerable city. Celebrate and gaze in awe at our final destination for all pilgrims, the Gothic cathedral of Santiago. A short walk away is our 18th century hotel, facing the famous market, the “Mercado de Abastos”. In the large stone city of Santiago, it is an oasis of calm with a small tranquil garden setting where we will enjoy our farewell meal after our privately guided walking tour of the city and Cathedral.

Day 8. Onwards from Santiago de Compostela

Onward Travels ] After an early breakfast, we say “adios” to each other and catch our onward connections. If staying, the cathedral has a pilgrim mass everyday at noon which is fascinating to see. You may feel after visiting the place and its dynamic feel, you will want to do it all over again!  *There is an airport in Santiago and we offer a morning transfer at 10:00am.

Romenesque Bike Tour hotel in Cangas de Onis

“Camino de Santiago Cycling Tour 2023!” I wanted to let you know how much our group from Atlanta LOVED the Cycling Country tour. Everything about it was perfect. The hotels, the food, the cycling, the scenery, the downhills…..ALL of it. More importantly, the CC Team of Geoff, Dean, Santiago and Jose’ were top notch and way more than we could have hoped for!! Their ‘nothing is too big an ask’ attitudes and each guy’s willingness to go the extra mile was absolutely astonishing and appreciated. Every day they surprised us with a great route, a treat on or off the bike, and making sure we ALL were OK and well taken care of. I would be remiss if I didn’t praise Jose’ with his wonderful and generous help in assisting with our friend Nancy and her injury/hospital fiasco. If he had not come with she and I to the hospital when her injury occurred and helped with translation, I don’t know WHAT we would have done. His assistance and time he spent with us was beyond his ‘duties and job’. So very much appreciated!! I know Peter is talking with you and Geoff about a Portugal trip next year – I’m sure it will be as wonderful as Spain. I cannot imagine having a better time, but I KNOW your team will make sure that we do! Please share with the guys how much I appreciate all the details they attended to and how much our group LOVED them and the tour! Look forward to Portugal in ’24. M. McDaniel – Georgia, USA – Sept 2023
“Camino Bike Ride” I can’t give enough stars for the expertise and experience of our team. The entire staff was beyond compare. The routes and experiences through the northern Spain region were unforgettable. If you ever need to find a great company to lead your trip, this is the one for any cyclist. D. Maund -North Carolina, USA – Sept 2023
“Cycling Northern Spain & Galicia” I cannot say enough good things about this company from initial bike set up to ensuring we took in local historic sites, they were attentive in all aspects. I plan to use them again for another tour of Spain or Portugal. I highly recommend this company. N. Bowers -Georgia, USA – Sept 2023
“Originally I was thinking of walking part of the Camino but when my search brought up ‘Coastal Camino by bike’ I was excited at the prospect of cycling in Spain, and I had Cycling Country on my radar 10years ago thinking about the Vuelta. At 76, now a weekend cyclist, and four years since my last cycle tour, I knew it would be a challenge, but I couldn’t resist so I contacted Maggi who assured me that it would be fun and very doable with a pedal-assist e-bike: furthermore, a helmet would be waiting for me. Following the route, supplied by CC, on the ‘Ride with GPS’ app was very reassuring and allowed us to ride at our own pace, stop for photos and enjoy the scenery and the descents! Wow! I used the handlebar bag on the e-bike to hold my power pack so was able to maintain a cable connection to my phone, mounted in the holder supplied by CC, and thus avoid a flat battery during the day. The pre-tour information was comprehensive and accurate, e.g., moderate to very hilly, quality accommodation. The itinerary, I thought, was well designed for a leisure trip, with the van support available for the unforeseen, van transfers avoiding busy roads and a cable car to lunch on the rest day. Our guides, Javier and Miguel, were obliging, attentive and entertaining and ensured the tour ran smoothly and on time. They introduced us to Spanish culture in general while highlighting the history and uniqueness of the North. For me this tour was perfect, just the right mix of organization, independence, challenge, adventure, excitement, fun and education in a bubble of comfort and security. Wish Spain wasn’t so far away R. Ryan – Queensland, Australia – July 2023
“Cycling Country Excelente! The routes were excellent, well thought out and very scenic. San Gloria to Cangas was absolutely among the best rides ever! Geoff and Miguel were great, always open to our questions and needs. Well organized in every detail. The accommodations excellent, the side trips interesting. A great tour. T. Graim – Colorado, USA – June 2023
“Cycling Country Rocks! We had an amazing life experience with Cycling Country! Geoff and Miguel were wonderful hosts and guides. The ride through the mountains of Northern Spain was spectacular, and at the end of each day, we spent the night relaxing in cozy hotels. Reaching Santiago, our final destination, was truly a gift! Our small group became friends and fellow travelers. I highly recommend Cycling Country for your next biking adventure! B. Smith – Conneticut, USA – June 2023

“Camino de Divertido The beautiful scenery of Northern Spain was awe inspiring every day! The Picos de Europa were stunning, and the ride through the gorge was unforgettable and will remain on my list of all time best days of my life! B. Reininger – Washington, USA – May 2023

“Camino de Santiago Cycling Tour” WOW! WOW! Cycling the Camino with Cycling Country was the best vacation I have had in my 79 years. Maggi and Jeff know how to find the best routes, the best lodging, the best food, and some of the most beautiful places on Earth. Thank you, Jeff and Maggi! May the winds always be gentle and always at your back. Blessings M. O’Donnell – Oregon, USA – Oct 2022
“Camino Cycling” Just returned from a tour with Cycling Country with a guided tour to Santiago. Unbelievable the level of detail, quality of service and positive experience that Geoff, Maggie and team provided. Their organization is top-down run with precision, care, and experience. When my Dad who used them 10 years ago for a Portugal tour told me they were the best at what they do I brushed it off but having gone on the tour with them – he wasn’t kidding. World Class run tour – thank you so much Geoff, Maggie, and team for making this such a memorable trip. J. O’Donnell – Oregon, USA – Oct 2022
“Camino Bike Trip” Cycling the Coastal Camino route was an incredible experience! The route is well-thought out and full of unique and interesting experiences that show the best Northern Spain has to offer. I can’t say enough about the attentiveness of the staff to the unique needs of each rider. You will not regret availing yourself of this experience!. Lara Mc. – California, USA – June 2022
“Cycling the Camino This was our second trip with Cycling Country. We rode in Andalucia in fall, 2018 and came back to do the Coastal Camino ride from Bilbao to Santiago de Compostella. I didn’t think they could top Andalucia, but this ride was even better. Spectacular scenery, excellent accommodations, first class equipment, and great support from our guides, Javi and Dani. Ross & Jess M. – California, USA – June-July 2019
“Hi Maggi, Thank you so much for organizing a lovely trip! Balbino, Javi and Dani were fabulous and took very good care of us. We didn’t want for anything the entire time. The e-bike was an adjustment for me and I prefer a road bike to the heavy and upright position of the ebike but it allowed me to ride and feel safe and I honestly don’t think I would have been able to climb some of those hills on a regular bike with the shape I was in so yes I would definitely recommend it to someone else in a similar position. While I believe the e-bike has a way to go before I would ever consider owning one, it definitely had its purpose on this trip! I have had several people ask about your company since I have been back and I hope I can bring your more business in the future with all my high praise and recommendations! Regards,” H. Shewmake – Texas, USA – July 2018
“Dear Maggi Andy and I both enjoyed our second ride with Cycling Country in Spain. It was good to meet up with Javi and his wonderful sock collection again. Javi, Dani and Balbino worked really hard to ensure that we all had the best time. They are all three conscientious, attentive, cheerful and knowledgeable, even when they put in very long days.….. With best wishes to you all at Cycling Country!” M. & A. Howard – NSW, Australia – Camino July 2018
“Simply the BEST This was our third tour with Cycling Country. Camino de Santiago across Northern Spain left from near Bilbao and ended 8 days later in Santiago de Compostela. Amazing cycling, wonderful lodging, and the best guides on earth. You simply feel like family and every day is special. The route was superb, the food in Spain is wonderful, and even the bikes were just perfect. Geoff, Maggi, and Javi go above and beyond to ensure that everyone feels comfortable regardless of what the day brings whether it is long climbs, inclement weather, or whatever. We look forward to our fourth trip with this wonderful cycling company. Previous to this we did Lisbon, Portugal to the Spanish border, and prior to that, a fantastic trip across Andalusia.” S. & R. Maislin – MA, USA – Camino June 2017
“The photos you sent out gave us great comprehensive coverage of our magic moments of the Camino tour. I hope your other tours are going as well as ours did. I look forward to keeping in touch and Looking into your other tours for next year. Cheers.” P. Crossman – South Australia – Camino July 2016
“Thank you so much for making our Cycling holiday so happy and enjoyable. We wish you all the best and are sure that your company will go from strength to strength with all the hard work that you put in.” Claire and Madeleine – UK

El Camino de Santiago Bike Tour

Santiago de Compostela cathedral

Trip Overview

This is an epic bike tour on many people's bucket list. The road from the French border across the top of northern Spain to Santiago de Compostela was one of the three major Christian pilgrimage routes during the Middle Ages, all leading to the resting place of the Apostle St. James. Winding from the Pyrenees to the gently rolling fields and woods of Galicia, this ancient system of trails and roads is now the most popular long-distance trail in Europe, known for its stunningly varied landscape, its ancient villages, beautiful meadowlands, rolling hills, the famous vineyards of the Rioja region, and a treasure trove of historical sites, churches and cathedrals, religious art and some of the most extraordinary architecture in the Western world. Add to this the wonders of such beautiful towns as Pamplona, Burgos, Leon and the wondrous city of Santiago de Compostela, and you have a magical and fascinating bike tour indeed. The basic concept of this tour is to stay on or next to the traditional Pilgrimage route, so at times you will need to decide between riding a somewhat challenging section of the pathway or taking a paved option, and there are locations where we will need to transfer you short distances by van. We are also fortunate that this spectacular section of the Camino affords us the opportunity to offer you the full range from modest 3-star hotel properties to some of the most elegant in northern Spain. Surfaces for this tour: 87% Paved and 13% Gravel.

Is Barcelona a good biking city?

You bet it is! Barcelona is an absolute gem for cyclists, thanks to its flat terrain, pleasant climate, and an impressive network of bike paths that spans over 200 kilometers. Whether you’re a novice biker or a seasoned cyclist, you’ll find the city inviting with its biking-friendly streets and scenic routes.

Barcelona has invested significantly in making itself a cyclist-friendly city, and the number of people cycling daily is testimony to that. To top it off, you’ll find many places in Barcelona offering bike rentals , making it even easier for tourists to join the cycling fun.

Is it easy to bike around Barcelona?

Biking around Barcelona is incredibly easy! The city’s layout is quite straightforward, and the cycling lanes are clearly marked, ensuring a seamless ride even for first-time visitors. Moreover, Barcelona is reasonably flat, with only a few hilly areas, making it accessible for all fitness levels.

Barcelona also has a public bike-sharing program known as Bicing, which is perfect for short trips around the city. However, do note that this service is mainly designed for residents, and tourists might need to rely on traditional bike rentals.

Is it safe to cycle in Barcelona?

It’s very safe to cycle in Barcelona! The city takes the safety of cyclists seriously, with separated bike lanes and traffic-calming measures in place throughout the city. Plus, the local culture is respectful towards cyclists, which adds another layer of security.

Of course, just like anywhere else, it’s important to follow road safety rules, use hand signals, wear a helmet, and stay alert. This includes for pedestrians, who aren’t always perfect at checking for bikes before crossing bike paths

Remember as well that bike theft can be an issue in Barcelona, so always lock up your bike securely when you’re not using it.

Where can I bike ride in Barcelona?

There’s no shortage of fantastic places to bike ride in Barcelona! From the charming old streets of the Gothic Quarter to the sunny beachside paths of Barceloneta, the options are plentiful. The Parc de la Ciutadella is a great starting point for any bike tour, with beautiful scenery and plenty of paths.

For a more extended ride, you can cycle up Montjuïc Hill for a breathtaking view of the city. If you want a break from urban life, consider taking a bike ride to Collserola Natural Park, a lush green oasis just outside the city.

No matter what your preference, there’s a bike path in Barcelona that’s perfect for you!

Can tourists rent bikes in Barcelona?

Yes, tourists can definitely rent bikes in Barcelona, and it’s a popular way to explore the city! There are numerous bike rental shops scattered throughout the city, offering a wide variety of options from traditional bikes to electric bikes.

You can usually rent a bike for a few hours, a whole day, or even several days depending on your needs. In addition to standalone bike rental shops, tour operators will provide bikes as part of guided or self-guided bike tours.

It’s a flexible, eco-friendly, and fun way to discover Barcelona at your own pace!

Do you have to wear a helmet on a bike in Barcelona?

Legally speaking, helmets are only mandatory for cyclists under 16 years old in urban areas, but they are highly recommended for all riders regardless of age. When you’re biking outside of urban areas and on interurban roads, the law requires that all cyclists wear a helmet.

Despite the legal aspect, wearing a helmet is always a smart choice as it provides essential protection and can prevent serious injuries in case of an accident. Most bike rental shops in Barcelona will provide you with a helmet when you rent a bike.

Can you bike on La Rambla?

Technically, yes, you can bike on La Rambla, but it’s not recommended due to the heavy pedestrian traffic. La Rambla is one of the busiest pedestrian areas in Barcelona, and navigating it on a bike can be challenging and stressful.

If you must pass through La Rambla, it’s better to walk your bike through the crowd to avoid accidents.

There are many other biking-friendly routes nearby that are safer and more enjoyable, such as the beautiful seafront promenade in Barceloneta or the wide avenues of Eixample.

Can you cycle on the pavement in Barcelona?

In Barcelona, cycling on the pavement is generally not allowed unless the pavement is wider than five meters and the pedestrian flow is low. Cyclists are encouraged to use bike lanes and shared spaces instead.

If the pavement is the only option and it meets the above conditions, cyclists should ride at a walking pace and always give priority to pedestrians.

Barcelona has an extensive network of bike lanes and routes designed specifically for cyclists, so you’ll often find it unnecessary and less convenient to cycle on the pavement. Understanding and respecting these rules helps ensure a safe and enjoyable cycling experience for everyone in the city.

Tour de France 2024 stages

This year’s Tour de France kicks off in Italy with three stages starting in Florence then traveling through Emilia-Romagna from Rimini in the east via Bologna to Turin. The first two are packed with climbs so expect attacking riding then the third is a nailed on sprint finish as there is barely a lump on the 230km between Plaisance and Turin.

On day four the race then hits the mountains and to start with the route climbs 40 km due west though the ski resort of Sestrieres but only on a pitch of 3.7%, then after this takes on the short climb over the Col de Montgenèvre to cross into France. The final climb is the mighty Col du Galibier, however it’s the ‘easy’ side from Briançon that the riders face before the rapid descent to the finish in Valloire.

That’s it for the first visit to the Alps as the race next heads into two sprint days, stage 5 from Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne to Saint-Vulbas and then the featureless stage 6 from Macon to Dijon.

Stage even will likely see the first serious GC action on the 25.3km flat time trial from Nuits-saint-Georges to Gevrey-Chambertin. The TT specialists will also be up for this one as with little to no elevation it’s just about as pure a time trial course as you could plot.

The 183km stage 8 from Semur-en-Auxois to Colombey-les-Deux-Églises is fairly lumpy and will tempt breaks but the sprinters team should be able to control things if they pay attention.

Stage 9 is one all the riders will have been dreading as it contains the unpredictable madness of dirt roads with a total of 15 sectors across the 199km. Starting and finishing in Troyes there are also four small climbs to contend with but it’s the unmade surfaces that will present the most danger.

After the stress of stage 9 Monday is the first race day of the race then the action resumes on Tuesday with a pan flat 187km from Orléans to Saint-Amand-Montrond.

On Wednesday things spice up with a day of small yet steep climbs on stage 11 in the Massif Central, the highlight and high point of which is the fantastic Pas de Peyrol but then it’s back to the flat for stage 12 between Aurillac and Villeneuve-sur-Lot and stage 13 from Agen to Pau.

Pau is nicknamed the gateway to the Pyrenees and that it is as stage 14 heads right into the mountains to cross the one and only Col du Tourmalet, the Hourquette d’Ancizan to then finish at Pla d’Adet. This first summit finish will have been worth the wait and will likely be the most decisive stage of the whole the week. Right after that comes another brutal Pyrenean day with four first category climbs on stage 15 before the second summit finish in two days on top of the Plateau de Beille.

Following this comes the second rest day then it’s time for the final week, and what a final week. Stage 16 from Gruissan to Nimes is easy enough then stage 17 to Superdevoluy crossing the Col du Noyer and stage 18 to Barcelonnette will certainly push the riders but its the next two that are killer.

Stage 19 from Embrun to the summit finish at Isola 2000 crosses both the Col de Vars and the giant Cime de la Bonette, which at 2,802 meters is the highest paved road in France and although only 144km-long gains a huge 4,400m of altitude.

Then the penultimate stage, stage 20 is shorter still at 132km and gains even more elevation with a whopping 4600m to be climbed. Starting in Nice and finishing on top of the Col de la Couillole it ticks off 1 second category and 3 first category climbs along the way.

To finish the race, in place of the usual sprint in Paris to avoid clashing with the Olympics there is a 23.5km time trial into Nice. This is the first time the race has finished with a time trial since 1989, could it throw up as much drama?

Today at the Tour de France

The 2024 Tour de France started in remarkable fashion with a spectacular win for the French hero Romain Bardet (DSM-Firmenich-PostNL). Once a GC rider trying to win the overall but now in his final Tour he is looking for opportunities for stage wins and as one presented it’s self 50 kilometres from the finish he took it. Together with his young team mate Frank van den Broek they held off the remnants of the bunch to take the most romantic, seemingly impossible of wins.

Bardet will take the Yellow Jersey into stage two which could be just as exciting as the race heads north to Bologna.

Tour de france Stage 2

What happened to Remco Evenepoel and Jonas Vingegaard?

If it wasn’t for the fateful events of April 5th at the Tour of the Basque Country we would have been building up to a very different looking Tour de France in 2024, but the horrendous crash that saw not one but two of the favourites end up in hospital changed the whole season in seconds. With both Remco Evenepoel (Soudal–Quick-Step) and two time winner and defending champion Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) sustaining multiple fractures it was a doubt they would see any more action this year.

They have however both recovered enough to be on the start line but far from the condition they would have liked to be in, especially when they are trying to beat a Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) who seemingly won the Giro without breaking sweat.

Evenepoel tested his form in the Critérium du Dauphiné where he convincingly won the time trial but he suffered in the mountains, especially when the gradient went into double figures. Vingegaards’ form though is a total mystery as he’s been kept at altitude away from racing but the team have said he would not be on the start line unless they thought he could win.

This is the Tour de France 2024 start list with all the riders for each team.

How to watch the Tour de France online from anywhere using a VPN

If you find yourself unable to view the Tour locally, you may need a different way to watch the world's greatest cyclists -- that's where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds on race day by encrypting your traffic, and it's also a great idea if you're traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.

With a VPN, you're able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the game. Most VPNs, like our  Editors' Choice, ExpressVPN , make it really easy to do this.

Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the US, UK and Canada, as long as you have a legitimate subscription to the service you're streaming. You should be sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions.

Quick tips for streaming Tour de France 2024 using a VPN

  • With four variables at play -- your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN -- your experience and success when streaming the Tour de France live may vary.
  • If you don't see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the "search for city or country" option.
  • If you're having trouble getting the game after you've turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs -- like Roku -- don't have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you'll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you're using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
  • All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network's sports app, you'll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help, since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.
  • And remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you're using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommend  Brave .

Tour de France: Faster, more dangerous

W hile crashes have always been part and parcel of cycling, fatalities are becoming a more frequent occurence. Now, artificial intelligence is being used to try to help halt, or even reverse, this trend. An inconspicuous mountain road in the north of Spain. The ribbon of asphalt winds its way from the Alto de Olaeta down into the valley. The road descends at a gradient of up to 14% -- steep, but nothing out of the ordinary for professional cyclists. And yet the small mountain road in the Basque Country could be a deciding factor in this year's Tour de France. Not because a mountain stage ends there, but because it was the scene of a distressing incident during one of the preparatory races.

In April, three of the four favorites for the Tour de France raced down the Alto de Olaeta during the Tour of the Basque Country and were involved in serious crashes. Primoz Roglic (Slovenia), Remco Evenepoel (Belgium) and Tour winner Jonas Vingegaard (Denmark) fell from their bikes, partially hit a concrete drain and suffered numerous broken bones. The cause: uneven road surfaces and excessive speed. The only favorite not to have crashed is Tadej Pogacar (Slovenia), who dominated the Giro d'Italia and is now aiming for the Giro-Tour double.

Are the riders to blame for the crashes?

Crashes have always been a part of cycling, but why do they seem to be becoming more frequent?

One reason is the pressure to perform, says Adam Hansen, president of the CPA riders' association and a former professional cyclist.

"Risk is part of the job. If you show weakness or don't take the necessary risk, there are 20 other riders behind you who would," the Australian told DW. "And the sporting directors remember that. If you're not prepared to take risks, then you'll lose your place in the team."

In other words, at least part of what is making things more dangerous is the human factor.

"Based on the UCI (cycling's world governing body) database that we work with, half of the crashes in professional cycling are caused by the riders," Hansen said.

He also believes that the pros themselves have a responsibility to avoid fatal crashes and to ride more risk-consciously. This is why he is pushing for the introduction of disciplinary measures in the form of yellow and red cards.

"That will bring a big improvement, because so far no one has been held accountable for misconduct," Hansen said. However, the new system won't go into testing until August - after the Tour.

A measure that has already been decided is the extension of the three-kilometer rule. In stages with flat finishes, all riders who crashed or broke down in the last three kilometers were previously counted with the same time as the group they belonged to at the time of the crash. This will now be extended to five kilometers before the finish.

"That was something the riders had been calling for," Hansen said.

Many classification riders were afraid of losing time in the finale. The resulting rivalry between sprint teams and teams focused on overall classification can lead to a lot of heated battles in the final push for the finish line.

Enter artifical intelligence

However, the data shows that the riskiest part of races starts earlier.

"The majority of crashes happen within the last 20 to 30 kilometers," Steven Verstockt, computer scientist and data analyst from the University of Ghent in Belgium said. In his Course project, he has recorded and scientifically analyzed more than 1,000 crashes in professional cycling - with the aid of artificial intelligence. The UCI is already using Verstockt's data, but the researcher is also calling for more openness to technology from organizers of races like the Tour de France.

"My suggestion would be for every rider to gets a sensor that records their data. This would help us to better understand the race and also to punish incorrect behavior," he said.

One aim of the project is to provide associations and event organizers with data-based answers as to which sections of the route are particularly dangerous. Among other things, onboard cameras and GPS data from the riders are analyzed. According to the AI-based analysis, the most common causes of crashes include fast and narrow descents as well as changing or poor road surfaces.

However, it is precisely these sections of the route that fascinate fans: high mountain stages with steep climbs and fast descents as well as cobbled sections are crowd pullers. However, the spectacular passages can have fatal consequences in the worst case. Time and again, athletes have crashed so badly at high speed that they did not survive the accident. Wouter Weylandt in 2011, Chad Young in 2017, Bjorg Lambrecht in 2019 and Gino Mäder in 2023 - tragic racing accidents that reignited the debate about rider safety. The Tour responds with additional safety measures: dangerous bends are secured with padded barriers, and acoustic signals warn riders of dicey sections of the route. But is there such a thing as safe cycling?

Ever faster due to new technology

In view of speeds of up to 130 kilometers per hour (81 miles per hour) on mountain descents, ridden on 25- to 32-millimeter-wide tires, making things completely safe is an illusion.

"The willingness of each individual rider to take risks is even higher in the Tour than in other races, because there is a lot at stake for every team and every rider," German sprinter Phil Bauhaus told DW.

That's why every detail counts, the bike, the clothing, the helmets and even socks that have been aerodynamically optimized in the wind tunnel have long been standard in the peloton. Added to this are ever-flatter seating positions on the bike, tires with reduced roll resistance and optimized nutrition and recovery for the riders. Every team is looking for the "marginal gains" once introduced by the successful Sky team, the small gains that make the difference - and in turn make the race faster and faster.

The Tour set a record in 2022 with an average speed of 42.1 km/h, and this year, fabulous values were achieved in the classics Milan - San Remo (46.1 km/h) and Paris - Roubaix (47.8 km/h). What does this mean for the races?

"The reaction time is shorter and the braking distance is longer, which makes it more difficult to avoid a fall," said Bauhaus, who made his debut at the Tour last year. He's calling for adjustments to the routes, more wide main roads. That would mean less danger for riders. Because there is no way back: "The bike manufacturers and clothing manufacturers naturally want to present and sell the best material. We professionals are the people who promote it. I don't believe that the sponsors want to give us worse material so that we ride slower. I don't see how you could slow the sport down again."
