We Tested the TikTok-Famous Stanley Adventure Quencher. It’s Good, but So Are Our Picks.

Some three months after we published this piece, Stanley released a new Adventure Quencher, the Quencher H2.0 FlowState Tumbler, which improves upon many of the issues we called out about the original. Its redesigned lid comes with a silicone seal at the straw base and full-cover closure to prevent spills like the ones we experienced. Stanley also released a handled version of the 30 oz. Quencher for folks (like us) who found the 40 oz. size to be too much tumbler, but loved its handle.

Scroll through TikTok or Instagram long enough, and you’re likely to come across one of the internet’s latest obsessions: the mega-popular, mega-sized Stanley Adventure Quencher Travel Tumbler . It’s a drinking vessel so social-media-famous, it has its own TikTok hashtag, #StanleyTumbler, that’s amassed more than 14.5 million views on the platform so far.

Our verdict after testing it? The Adventure Quencher is good! But it’s also overhyped and, depending on how you plan to use the tumbler, it might not be a worthwhile purchase.

My colleagues and I tend to approach trendy items with substantial skepticism. But sometimes the ads (or, in my case, the algorithm) get the better of our curiosity. This 40-ounce insulated tumbler didn’t seem that different from the Yeti and Hydro Flask bottles and cups already cluttering my cabinets (save for the large handle). Yet after a few videos, I became convinced that an improved, better-hydrated version of myself awaited if I could just get my hands on the Adventure Quencher.

The only way I was able to do that was to request a review unit from Stanley, the outdoor gear retailer who makes and sells the tumbler, because it was sold out everywhere I looked. Stanley restocks the tumbler every few months in limited batches (and folks join waitlists that send out email or text alerts so they know when it happens), but it sells out within minutes. On the resale site Poshmark , the elusive Stanley tumbler has been listed as high as $125; one person wanted the Adventure Quencher so badly they bought it secondhand off of Ebay for $94.

“When I tried to buy some [tumblers] from the last drop, mine sold out of my cart before I could check out,” said Krystle Perkins , a DIY content creator who goes by @perkinsonparkway on social media. “If you don’t know exactly what you want and you don’t check out super quick, it’s gone.” (Still, Perkins has managed to amass multiple Adventure Quenchers in a rainbow of pastel colorways, as have plenty of her fellow content creators.)

Now that I’ve tried it out myself, I don’t love the enormous tumbler as much as the social media posts assured me I would. Don’t get me wrong—I like many aspects of it, including how in the loop I feel when I use it in public, and it lives up to its marketing claims by keeping beverages cold for hours and ice frozen for days. In the end, though, the Adventure Quencher turned out to be way too much tumbler to use practically in my everyday life, and if I don’t find myself reaching for the cup (which costs about $40) constantly, the price doesn’t feel justified.

There are also a handful of things Wirecutter’s tumbler picks do better. Here’s the breakdown.

What we like about the Stanley Adventure Quencher

Two travel tumblers sitting in a car cupholder that is between the driver's and passenger's seats.

There’s plenty to like about the double-walled, insulated Adventure Quencher. But the fans I spoke to (along with the never-ending stream of TikToks I watched for research ) all point to five qualities in particular that make the Adventure Quencher stand out.

  • The tumbler has a large, comfortable-to-grip handle that makes it more convenient to lug around.
  • Its tapered bottom is designed to fit into cupholders, so it can accompany you in the car or at the gym.
  • It’s dishwasher safe , which means you’re more likely to use it since it won’t be sitting in the sink, waiting for a scrub. And if you don’t have a dishwasher, content creator Ruby Locknar said its wide mouth makes it easy to hand-wash with a sponge, unlike other tumblers or water bottles with narrow necks.
  • Its adjustable top can be screwed on so that the handle accommodates left-handed people. Perkins likes that she can adjust the handle to suit whether she’s in her car’s driver seat or riding shotgun.
  • It keeps beverages cold for hours , so you never have to sip on tepid water or lukewarm soda.

I also really appreciate the sheer amount of liquid this thing can hold—I can fill it up in the morning and sip throughout the day without running to the fridge for constant refills. If you spend the majority of your day at a desk or in a car, the Adventure Quencher makes staying hydrated easy.

But most notable was how the aesthetically pleasing, cream-colored tumbler made me feel: sort of embarrassed (more on that below) but also extremely on the pulse—I was part of the exclusive Stanley club. One woman at the gym commented that she’d been trying to get one for months, while another saluted me with her cream-colored Adventure Quencher. I felt like the most popular girl at school.

What we don’t like about the Stanley Adventure Quencher

The Adventure Quencher is too cumbersome to be your everyday companion if you’re constantly on the go. It’s heavy —nearly 1.5 pounds empty and almost 4 pounds filled—which makes it hard to carry around casually. Plenty of TikTokers bring their Stanley tumblers along on their “ hot girl walks ,” but when I tried, I regretted taking it with me. My weak wrists didn’t stand a chance. (This could very well be a me-problem—Locknar, who uses the Adventure Quencher every day, goes on frequent excursions through New York City’s Central Park with her tumbler.)

When full, the tumbler is also fairly top heavy, so it’s pretty easy to knock down if you’re not careful. And because the lid isn’t leakproof , water rushes around the straw and out of the mouthpiece alarmingly fast. I’ve sent my Adventure Quencher toppling a few times, leaving behind puddles on my desk, the gym floor, and cushioned chairs at my local coffee shop. Locknar, whose main complaint about the Adventure Quencher is the leaky lid, has found a workaround: the Quick Cup Fix Stopper , a plastic insert that slows spills. I wasn’t able to test the stopper myself, but Locknar said this add-on (which costs about $13 for a two-pack) eliminated the problem. But you really shouldn’t have to make another purchase for an aftermarket fix after sinking about $40 into the tumbler itself.

Because of the Adventure Quencher’s size and leaky tendencies, train and bike commuters may also find it inconvenient. Even if you were to buy the Quick Cup Fix Stopper, it wouldn’t completely eliminate spills—so tossing the tumbler in a bag isn’t an option and neither is slotting it into the side pockets of a backpack, as the handle prevents the tumbler from fitting.

The Adventure Quencher is just over 12 inches in height, including the straw—that’s longer than my forearm—and when I carried it in public, I felt a little embarrassed to be toting around something so big . It made me feel conspicuous at times, especially when I brought it into stores while running errands. Supervising editor Joshua Lyon, who managed to snag himself an Adventure Quencher during a recent restock, loves the tumbler, but he also feels a little self-conscious drinking out of it during Zoom calls. “It is taller than my head,” he says.

How the Stanley Adventure Quencher compares against our picks

A row of assorted travel tumblers that Wirecutter Staff have tested and picked.

In terms of performance, the Adventure Quencher (video) isn’t really that different from the Wirecutter-approved picks in our tumbler guide. Just like the Stanley tumbler, the Hydro Flask , Klean Kanteen , and Yeti Rambler tumblers all excel at ice retention, can be outfitted with straws, and fit comfortably into cupholders. They’re all dishwasher safe too, though Hydro Flask noted that hot water might discolor the powder coat.

The 40-ounce Adventure Quencher is double the size of the tumblers we recommend. In some situations, this is a perk, but in others, it becomes a nuisance. If you’ve got your sights set on the Adventure Quencher specifically because of its capacity but can’t seem to get your hands on it, Yeti and Hydro Flask both sell larger versions of the tumblers we recommend (though neither tumbler holds quite as much liquid as the Adventure Quencher). Stanley also sells the Adventure Quencher Travel Tumbler 30 oz , which comes in a few of the same colors as its larger counterpart.

If it’s the handle that keeps the Adventure Quencher in your thoughts, Yeti offers both a 20-ounce and 30-ounce insulated, handled mug that can accommodate a straw. And if you already have a tumbler you love but wish it had a handle, you can buy an attachable one. We tested the Tumbler Tamer dual-ring handle and the Grip-It single-ring handle , and while they weren’t the most aesthetically pleasing options, they worked well in transforming 30-ounce tumblers into handled mugs. (Note that a dual-ring handle won’t be compatible with your car cupholders.)

The Grip-It handle (left) and the Tumbler Tamer (right) resting on a picnic table.

The Stanley Adventure Quencher is a great tumbler—just keep in mind that it’s not the only great tumbler out there. But it’s also true that the items we choose to spend money on and use every day should spark joy, so even if the Adventure Quencher isn’t for me, that doesn’t mean it can’t be for you. (As long as you can get your hands on it, that is!)

“I need to be happy, and this makes me happy,” said Perkins, who uses two tumblers simultaneously most days (one for water, another for Diet Coke). Locknar felt similarly: “Yes, it’s a cup, but it’s more than that—it’s one of those little simple pleasures, a product that just makes me happy.”

5 Hot Springs Near Stanley, Idaho With Dreamy Views

One of the most awesome things about Stanley is the abundance of natural hot springs found in the area. To many, soaking in a hot spring with an outdoor natural setting is the ultimate relaxation experience. And you really can’t get a better outdoor setting than Central Idaho.

Central Idaho is unlike the rest of the state or anywhere else you’ve ever been. Yes, the emerald forests aren’t different to elsewhere in the Northwest, but it is the sage-colored rolling hills coupled with the crystal clear flowing rivers, and the minty smell of sagebrush wafting through the air that makes this part of Idaho so unique.

And what better place to enjoy this scenery than from a hot spring? Fortunately for visitors to Stanley, there are tons of hot springs in the area waiting for you to find them.

The reason for the abundance of hot springs found throughout Idaho is thanks to the Idaho Batholith. Rather than being heated directly by magma like the hot springs in Yellowstone National Park, the hot springs in Idaho are a result of plate friction from colliding tectonic plates.

Most people are unaware that Central Idaho sits on a fault line and that earthquakes frequently happen here, but they rarely ever get media attention unlike earthquakes that happen in California. Perhaps the reason for lack of media coverage is because the population of Idaho is much smaller than California and it does not affect human life as much?

Whatever the reason may be, you should certainly take up the opportunity to soak in as many of these geological wonders as possible while you are in Stanley! I mean what’s better than a long hot soak after a full day of hiking, or getting toasty and warm under a starry sky after a day filled with adventure?

Here are the five most amazing hot springs in and near the town of Stanley you need to seek out on your visit.

Best Hot Springs Near Stanley

1. mountain village resort hot springs.

Mountain Village Resort In Stanley, Idaho

There are a lot of really cool things about the town of Stanley, especially the unobstructed panoramic views of Idaho’s stunning landscape which include the Sawtooth Mountains. But what’s even better is that you can enjoy these magnificent views while sitting in a hot spring!

The Mountain Village Resort has one of the best views of the Sawtooth mountains in town and their hot spring quite possibly has the most incredible view seen from a hot spring ever!!

If you happen to know of any other hot springs that can compete with the Mountain Village Resort’s hot spring views, we would love for you to let us know in the comments below.

stanley adventure travel

This natural hot spring is piped into a man made tub which is very deep and spacious. It is so large that it can comfortably fit eight to ten people. It is housed inside a rustic log cabin with doors that are usually kept open.

Positives: The tub is huge and can easily fit between eight to ten people. It has incredible views and is sheltered from the wind and rain.

Negatives: You need to be staying at the Mountain Village Resort to gain access to this hot spring or pay a $20 fee.

2. Boat Box Hot Springs

Boat Box Hot Springs Near Stanley, Idaho

Boat Box Hot Springs is a hot spring near Stanley that is situated right beside the beautiful Salmon River! This hot spring offers adventurous souls a truly unique soaking experience not only because of its iydillic location but also due to the unique-shaped tub that looks like a witches cauldron.

A soak in this tub comes with dreamy views of forest-covered mountains and the wild and scenic Salmon River. You can relax here while listening to the sound of the gushing river and wind whistling through pine trees.

This unique hot spring is located a few short miles from Stanley and although it is located right beside Salmon River Scenic Byway , it is very easy to miss since it sits hidden around a bend and at a lower level than the road.

The nice thing about Boat Box Hot Springs is that it’s quite deep and the water is very hot which is perfect on those cold mornings and cool nights. However due to the tub’s small size, only two people can comfortably fit. Four people is certainly doable but feels like a little bit of a squeeze. You could also be waiting up to an hour or more to get a turn since Boat Box is so tiny.

3. Snake Pit Hot Spring

Stanley, Idaho

The next best thing to Mountain Village Resort hot spring is Snake Pit hot spring. This natural hot spring is hiding behind the building that the Mountain Village Resort hot spring is housed in and many people do not even know it is just there.

It has the same incredible view of the Sawtooth mountains except this hot spring is free! The pool is quite large so there is a lot of room for a few people to get in and soak at the same time. Although, it is very likely you’ll find it empty.

Positives: The positives about Snake Pit hot spring is its size and the fact that it is relatively unknown which means a higher probability of having the place all to yourself.

Negatives: The only issue some people may have with this hot spring is that the ground is quite muddy which might be a turn off if you don’t like that squishy feeling on your skin.

4. Sunbeam Hot Spring

Sunbeam Hot Springs In Idaho

Sunbeam is a very popular hot spring and you can expect it to be quite busy especially during summer on weekends and school holidays.

One of the main reasons this hot spring is so popular is because it is very accessible and super easy to find. It is located right beside Highway 75 about ten miles north of Stanley. There is signage to let you know when you get to Sunbeam and there is also a large parking lot. Keep an eye out for the congregation of parked vehicles and the bathhouse at the parking area.

This hot spring has several natural warm pools on the banks of the Salmon River. Some of these pools are too hot while other pools are not hot enough.

When Sunbeam is busy, you may be forced to sit in the cooler zones which isn’t a problem during summer in the middle of the day but in the evenings or early summer and autumn you might not have as pleasant an experience.

Another thing you should know about Sunbeam hot springs is that it’s what I like to call tidal. Obviously there are no tides here but the water levels do fluctuate and flows aren’t as high later in the season. This means the pools become smaller and sometimes non-existent the later it gets in the year.

Positives: It has several warm areas which means there is room for a lot of people to soak at the same time.

Negatives: This hot spring is very popular and often crowded meaning it might not be such a relaxing experience.

5. Goldbug Hot Springs

Goldbug Hot Spring

Goldbug Hot Springs might just be the best hot springs in the whole of the United States. Well it most certainly is in my opinion anyway. And trust me, we have been to a lot of phenomenal hot springs to compare this one to.

What makes these hot springs particularly special? I think that the incredible location and the journey it takes to get to them is what makes Goldbug Hot Springs so unique.

Getting to this hot spring is quite an adventure and involves hiking through scenic Idaho countryside and up into the Salmon River Mountains. The hike gives you a close up view of what the central region of Idaho’s landscape is really like; endless rolling hills dotted with fragrant sagebrush.

Once you get to the hot spring there is no doubt you will be blown away by the stunning view. If you’re lucky, you may even have this spot all to yourself if you get here at the right time.

Goldbug Hot Spring

Okay, so let’s cover the positives and negatives about these hot springs so that you can decide for yourself whether you’d like to make the effort to visit.

Positives: The best thing about these hot springs is the location and views. Also, the forced adventure to reach them will be an experience you never forget.

Negatives: The trail to these hot springs is two miles each way which means you will need to set aside at least three hours to hike and soak.

Guide To Visiting Stanley’s Hot Springs

Treason trial opens for L.A. woman held in Russia for donating $50 to Ukraine charity

The trial of a Russian American dual citizen whom Russia accuses of treason opened Thursday as tensions rise between Washington and Moscow, including over the arrests of two American journalists.

The trial is being held behind closed doors in Yekaterinburg, in the same court that next week is to begin hearing the case of Evan Gershkovich , a Wall Street Journal reporter who was arrested in March 2023 and charged with espionage.

The defendant was identified by Russian authorities as Los Angeles resident Ksenia Karelina , although U.S. media reports frequently use the surname Khavana, the name of her ex-husband.

Russia arrests L.A. woman for treason after she gave $50 to Ukraine, employer says

A Russian American woman from Los Angeles is held in Russia on treason charges, apparently over a donation to a charity for Ukraine.

Feb. 20, 2024

Karelina was born in Yekaterinburg and was arrested in February while visiting her family.

Russia’s main domestic security agency, the Federal Security Service, charges that Karelina raised money for a Ukrainian organization that was providing weapons, ammunition and other supplies to the Ukrainian military. Her boyfriend has said she made a single donation of about $50 to a Ukrainian organization, according to media reports.

Karelina faces a sentence of up to 20 years in prison if convicted. Almost all Russian criminal cases that make it to court end in convictions. The trial was adjourned in the afternoon and the next session was set for Aug. 7, Russian news agencies said.

Gershkovich, the highest-profile American behind bars in Russia, is accused of gathering secret information from a tank factory in Nizhny Tagil, about 90 miles north of Yekaterinburg.

His employers deny the allegation, and the U.S. State Department has declared him to be wrongfully detained.

Russian court denies appeal of Los Angeles woman held on ‘treason’ charge

Ksenia Karelina, a U.S.-Russia dual citizen who was detained in Russia over an apparent donation to a Ukrainian aid group, appeared via video in court on Thursday. A judge denied her appeal.

Feb. 29, 2024

Gershkovich’s trial, also closed, is to begin Wednesday.

A journalist for U.S.-funded Radio Liberty/Radio Free Europe with U.S. and Russian dual citizenship has been held since October on charges of gathering military information and failing to register as a foreign agent.

Since sending troops into Ukraine in February 2022, Russia has sharply cracked down on dissent and has passed laws that criminalize criticism of the operation in Ukraine and remarks considered to discredit the Russian military. Concern has risen since then that Russia could be targeting U.S. nationals for arrest.
