Are Hotel Star Ratings Even Reliable? A Travel Agency CEO Tells Us

W hen you start to plan a vacation, it can be fun to research destinations and accommodations that will provide a refreshing getaway. As you compare all of the beautiful hotels around the world , you'll naturally want to find one that's in an interesting location, within your budget, and offers the amenities you prefer. One way to compare different hotels is to check the star rating that each one has received. This scoring system is separate from the values that result from guest reviews, and the star level is independently assigned to a hotel. But how do you know why one hotel is designated as a 4-star establishment while another one is designated as only 2-star? In an exclusive interview with Explore, Byrd Bergeron, professional travel advisor and CEO of The Travel Byrds , explains how this rating system works and whether these scores are actually reliable.

Bergeron founded The Travel Byrds as a way to enrich her clients' lives through culture and exploration, and her years of extensive research and professional training has made her an informed expert in the travel industry. She understands how a trip can create unforgettable memories and change a person's outlook on the world. Her goal is to equip her clients with the insight they need as they make their plans. When it comes to the hotel star rating system, however, Bergeron cautions that there are a few reasons why travelers should be careful about relying too much on these scores.

Hotel Ratings Are Often Inconsistent

Byrd Bergeron begins by explaining what the hotel star rating system is and how it works. "Star ratings are typically assigned by independent organizations based on specific criteria that they decide upon, such as room quality, amenities, service, cleanliness, and overall guest experience," she states. However, she points out that there are several problems with this system. "The standards used for rating hotels can differ between countries and organizations, leading to HUGE inconsistencies," she says. Each organization may use a slightly different method to create these evaluations, which makes it hard to compare ratings equally. 

Bergeron continues by highlighting another potential flaw in this rating process that makes these scores unreliable. "While these are 3rd parties who give the ratings, it's not unusual for this to be a 'pay to play' type system," she explains. This type of favoritism that goes on behind the scenes is another reason why travelers should be cautious about placing too much emphasis on these star ratings when they choose a hotel. Bergeron also describes why these ratings can be very inconsistent. "Some organizations base ratings on amenities such as pools, restaurants, and spas," she says. "Just because a hotel doesn't have a pool doesn't necessarily mean it doesn't give 5-star service!" In fact, there are many reasons why tourists might want to opt for a lower star-rated hotel on their trips , as this choice might save money on amenities that aren't a priority.

Use Your Own Judgment To Decide

Instead of relying solely on the star rating system, Byrd Bergeron encourages travelers to use their own judgment when choosing a hotel. "I would take the rating and compare it to a number of other factors," she suggests. "I always look at customer ratings from a variety of sites (not just one), such as Google, Tripadvisor, Yelp, Booking.com, and many others." By making these comparisons, Bergeron makes up her own mind about the service and amenities provided. She adds an additional tip regarding hotel photos. "I would also skip the pictures on the hotel's website that were professionally taken and instead search for more realistic Google photos or Instagram photos that people may have posted of the property," she suggests.

In addition, your research can help you notice any red flags before you book the hotel , since the star rating may not accurately reflect the current state of the resort. "Ratings are more about the types of amenities or how they were judged on a particular visit from that organization," she says. "Remember, hotel's management can change or things can get run down over time. Check the most recent reviews to be sure this stay is the right one for you!" ‌She also recommends checking out Facebook groups that are focused on specific resorts to read their suggestions. Considering input from many resources, and not just one rating, will help you make the best decision about the hotel that's perfect for your vacation.

Fresh off a surprise appearance in the NBA Playoffs , the Orlando Magic are being linked to some top names in free agency.

Front office head Jeff Weltman is seeking more help to go with franchise cornerstone Paolo Banchero after the forward put up a stellar sophomore campaign.

We’ve already heard rumors that Orlando is interested in four-time NBA champion Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors heading into NBA free agency this summer.

We can now add another name to the list. According to Kelly Iko of The Athletic , Orlando is interested in Los Angeles Lakers guard D’Angelo Russell.

The 28-year-old Russell has a player option worth $18.7 million for next season. He’s more than likely to decline said option and hit the open market.

Russell averaged 18.0 points on 42% shooting from distance last season, adding 6.3 assists and 3.1 rebounds in the process. Despite this, he was on the receiving end of a ton of criticism for seemingly inconsistent play.

Orlando Magic definitely have a need in the backcourt

Guard Markelle Fultz is slated to hit free agency this summer . He has not necessarily panned out since the former No. 1 pick was acquired from the Philadelphia 76ers ahead of the 2019-20 season. This past year saw Fultz average 7.8 points and 2.8 assists on 47% shooting.

Fellow guard Cole Anthony also has not lived up to expectations. The former first-round pick from North Carolina is shooting a mere 42% from the field throughout his career.

Needless to say, the Magic need some backcourt help to go with the aforementioned Banchero as well as Franz Wagner in the frontcourt.

The good news? Orlando is expected to have north of $25 million to spend against the 2024-25 NBA salary cap. It has the ability to add an upgrade in the backcourt.

NBA Trade Odds: Magic Rated a Favorite if Cavs PG Garland Becomes Available

ORLANDO — Could the answer at point guard for the Orlando Magic come from a familiar foe?

The Cleveland Cavaliers face plenty of uncertainty in their backcourt. After beating the Orlando Magic in seven games in the first round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs, the Cavs were eliminated by the No. 1 seed Boston Celtics in five games. This was Cleveland's best season since 2018, yet the backcourt duo that carried the Cavs may have played their final game together.

Reports from The Athletic's Shams Charania and ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski have indicated that five-time All-Star Donovan Mitchell could be on the move if he and the Cavs can't agree on a contract extension. But if the two sides are able to agree to a deal, then fellow guard Darius Garland could be traded instead.

If Garland, 24, becomes available, the Magic are among the teams listed as a potential trading partner. The gambling sportsbook Bovada rates Orlando at +950 odds to land the former No. 5 overall pick, tied for third-best with the Utah Jazz, Philadelphia 76ers, Minnesota Timberwolves, and New Orleans Pelicans. The San Antonio Spurs have the best odds to land Garland at +300, while the Los Angeles Lakers are second at +600.

Garland's numbers took a slight dip in the regular season, as he missed 25 games due to injuries that included a facial fracture. He averaged 18 points and 6.5 assists per game — his lowest numbers since 2020-21. In the playoffs, Garland averaged 15.7 points, 5.8 assists, and 3.6 rebounds across 12 games.

Orlando's backcourt is also an uncertainty, with Markelle Fultz and Gary Harris set to enter free agency. Anthony Black, Orlando's first-round pick in 2023, flashed promise early in the season but rarely played down the stretch.

The Magic could benefit from a floor general like Garland, but it's worth wondering how good of a fit he would be. Orlando is lauded for its size and length at every position and Garland is 6-foot-1. Plus, adding a player who could take the ball out of Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner's hands is questionable.

Garland is also set to make $163.23 million over the next four seasons, according to Spotrac . Atlanta Hawks point guard Dejounte Murray is taller at 6-foot-5 and more affordable. He is making $114 million over the next four seasons, according to Spotrac . Murray, 27, averaged 22.5 points, 6.4 assists and 5.3 rebounds per game last season.

At Garland's peak in 2021-22, he was an All-Star and averaged a career-high 21.7 points and 8.6 assists per game. That version of Garland could be the answer at point guard and the offensive push the Magic needs to venture deeper into the postseason. Otherwise, Orlando may be better off betting on Black improving in his second season.
