Recently 6 of us friends from Arizona, Key Largo, Michigan, Ireland and Scotland took an all girls trip for 5 days on The Barolo, a private luxurious yacht in Norway. The crew of three worked together seamlessly and provided a lifetime memorable experience for us all...

Beginning in Stavanger and ending in Bergen, we slowly traversed the magnificent fjords, docking each night in secluded, idyllic coves.

We were enlightened about the sites and culture and unrivaled beauty of Norway.  We became personally close to all crew members who ensured we were having an amazing cruise.

The Chef, Tommy, prepared 3 delectable meals per day, unrivaled in taste, presentation,  culinary artistry. He made homemade ice cream,  bread, and of course, waffles! Dinners were 3 course, each prepared to tantalize the taste buds with a variety of spices and flavors. Tommy never failed to please and delight with his skills as a top notch chef.

The owner of the yacht,  Helge Ljones,  arranged for helicopter tours over the glaciers and stunning landscapes,  accompanied us on a hike to a lake at the end of waterfalls and roaring rivers with water so clean we filled our bottles and had a picnic lunch next to the pristine lake. Helge’s efforts to ensure we had an exceptional adventure were admirable and highly appreciated.  His knowledge of these areas is extensive and his dedication to his clients is remarkable .

The Captain,  Paul, is the youngest and highest ranked in the business.  He is professional,  focused, amicable and skilled. He parallel parked the 271 foot vessel backwards up to the dock. He maneuvered the vessel so that we had the opportunity of 360 degree views of the Majestic sites from every angle.

The most repeated word heard on each of the 5 days was “AMAZING!”

Words are not adequate to sufficiently express our awe of Norway’s stunning natural beauty nor the kindness and efforts of the 3 man crew who became close friends and an integral part of the joy we experienced.

One of the top adventures of our lifetimes.

Majestic and blissful journey.

We are gratefully appreciative of our time on the yacht, BAROLO.

Fjord Line cruise between Bergen and Stavanger

Beautiful mountains and deep fjords make an unbeatable Norwegian combination. Travel with Fjord Line between Bergen and Stavanger! Book your ticket here.

Fjord Line - MS Bergensfjord

The Fjord Line ships, MS Stavangerfjord and MS Bergensfjord, travel daily from Bergen to Stavanger through exceptionally beautiful natural landscapes. Sailing directly from the Port of Bergen in the city centre, Fløyen, Ulriken and the other city mountains along the fjord provide a bewitching backdrop as we make our way to beautiful Haugalandet, where the distance between the open sea to islets, archipelagos and deep fjords is minimal.  The ship sails in inshore waters for the entire voyage, so you're never far from natural landscapes or landmarks. For example, when sailing from Bergen you can see Askøybroen (Askøy Bridge) and Sotrabrua (Sotra Bridge), two gigantic suspension bridges that connect the mainland to the two Hordaland islands. Both bridges are over one kilometre in length and create a dramatic sight from the deck at the bow of the ship or from the large panoramic windows on board. And be prepared for Karmsund bru (Karmsund Bridge) too. This bridge, connecting Karmøy and Haugesund, illustrates what is so wonderful and unique about voyages in Western Norway. It's not possible to get a closer mix of nature and man-made structure. Karmsund Bridge's characteristic arch makes it popular with photographers, so have your camera ready! On board, you can enjoy good food and recharge your batteries before arriving at the historic and dynamic city of Stavanger. Fjord Line has menus and restaurants to cater for all tastes. For those that like a little bit of everything, the Commander Buffet restaurant, which has daily breakfast, lunch and dinner menus, is a good option. As it's a buffet, you can pick and mix to your heart's content. If you'd prefer a romantic à la carte dinner, then the Grieg Brasserie is the place for you. Here, you can savour various tasty dishes composed of top-quality raw ingredients. Or for something quick and easy, why not try the Oasis Garden Café. The ships are also equipped with a comfortable lounge where, for an additional fee, you can enjoy the sea view in a comfortable seat and help yourself to hot and cold drinks throughout the journey. Here you have access to wifi and power sockets and it is possible to order lunch and dinner from a separate menu. For a round trip from either Bergen or Stavanger, an interesting alternative is travelling back on Kystbussen (the coastal bus). With this option, we would recommend a minimum one-night stay in Bergen or Stavanger. The bus takes about five hours and can be booked online here. After arriving in Stavanger, the ship continues on to Hirtshals in Denmark and then to Kristiansand. Trips to Denmark, can be booked at fjordline.com DEPARTURES 2024: Bergen - Stavanger: Every day: at 13:30 p.m. Attendance 60 minutes before departure. Stavanger Cruise Port Guide | 8 Best Things To Do In Stavanger

Stavanger Norway

Welcome to Stavanger cruise port, nestled on the southwest coast of Norway known for its picturesque town center, friendly people, and rich cultural heritage. Stavanger proudly claims to be the Viking birthplace, where history and myth come together.

As you go east, the scenery changes to spectacular Norwegian fjords and towering mountains, among which stands out the stunning Lysefjord, home to the legendary Preikestolen, or “the Pulpit Rock”. To the south is Jaeren, an area with flat, open landscapes and extensive sandy beaches. In this post, read about:

Stavanger Cruise Port

Stavanger cruise terminal is conveniently located near the historic Old Town (also known as Gamle Stavanger) and within walking distance of various attractions. Cruise ships primarily dock at the Strandkaien Quay , which can accommodate up to two cruise vessels, depending on the size.

If more ships are in port Stavanger, which rarely happens, cruise ships may dock in Mekjarvik, a commercial port located about 10 km/6 miles (a 15-minute drive) northwest of Stavanger, or they may tender.

There are no facilities at Strandkaien Quay, except for a Tourist Information Center where you can get city maps and useful information from friendly English-speaking staff. Taxis and parking for buses are available on the pier. Shops, restaurants, cafes and landmarks are located within a short walk from the terminal. There may be a Hop on Hop off bus service, however, get the latest updates at the Tourist Information Center.

Getting Around & Local Transportation

  • Stavanger is a compact and walkable city, making it easy for cruise passengers to explore its attractions on foot .
  • The city has an efficient public transportation network, which includes buses, trains and ferries, operated by Kolumbus company. Stavanger’s train station and the adjacent main bus terminal are located in the city center, around 900 m (a 12-minute walk) southeast of the port of Stavanger. However, due to the ship’s limited time in port, using public transportation may not be the best idea for cruise passengers.
  • Ferries are a popular way of getting around, as they connect the city center with the nearby islands. Stavanger Ferry Terminal is located around 1 km/0.60 miles (less than a 15-minute walk) southeast of the cruise port. Stavanger is also a bike-friendly city and you can rent e-bikes at or near the bus stations. For both ferries and bikes, check the timetables and get more information at Kolumbus’ official website .
  • Stavanger has an excellent road infrastructure and plenty of parking facilities in and around the city. Before renting a car , make sure you inquire about the driving regulations in Norway. Check out Stavanger rent-a-car deals

From the charming Old Town (Gamle Stavanger), historic Stavanger Cathedral and the city’s museums, to the iconic natural landmarks like Preikestolen and Kjeragbolten in the nearby Lysefjord, this city has something for everyone’s taste!

1. Stavanger Old Town (Gamle Stavanger)

Just a short walk from the port of Stavanger, you’ll reach Stavanger Old Town, also known as Gamle Stavanger. Located on the west side of Vågen in the city center, the Old Town consists of 173 wooden buildings that will transport you to the past.

4. Lysefjord

Immerse yourself in the stunning views of Lysefjord, a 40-kilometer-long fjord located near Stavanger, renowned for its dramatic landscapes and iconic landmarks. Known as the “Light Fjord” because of its light-colored granite cliffs, Lusefjord is a breathtaking gem located in the southwestern region of Norway’s Rogaland area.

One of Lysefjord’s well-known landmarks is the iconic Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) , a massive cliff soaring 604 meters above the fjord, offering spectacular panoramic views of the fjord and its surrounding landscapes. Also, don’t forget to visit Kjerag, a daring cliff that showcases Kjeragbolten —a massive rock trapped between two cliffs. Just standing on this hanging rock is an adrenaline-packed experience by itself, providing a unique and exciting view of the fjord.

When exploring Lysefjord, consider taking a guided tour. These tours often include transportation (by boat or bus), allowing you to unwind and enjoy the drive as a knowledgeable guide provides fascinating facts about the fjord and its surroundings. Once you reach the top, a visual feast of nature’s beauty awaits with the towering cliffs dropping dramatically into the fjord below, offering an overwhelming feeling of thrill. While the hike to Pulpit Rock is not for the faint-hearted, the memories made and the breathtaking beauty you’ll witness make it an absolute must for anyone wanting an adrenaline rush and a connection with the raw beauty of Norway’s natural marvels.

The best way to visit Pulpit Rock is on a guided tour, but you can also rent a car and drive there. A ride also includes a ferry portion from Stavanger to the town of Tau, from where you continue to Lysefjord. Ferries run frequently but the crossing takes about 40 minutes so be mindful of that when planning your day. Overall time you need to reach Pulpit Rock by car is about 1 hour and a half.

One of the cruise’s highlights is passing beneath the famed Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock), which allows you to see this towering natural monument from a whole different perspective. Some fjord cruises may also pass by the Kjerag mountain, known for the daring Kjeragbolten, a massive boulder wedged between two cliffs.

As you navigate through the fjords, you may encounter small islands and coastal villages, providing a glimpse into local life and traditional Norwegian architecture. Also, keep an eye out for the local wildlife that calls the fjords home!
