World Class Guides

We think the best way to experience amazing places is in the company of amazing people.

That’s why our local guides are world-class. They’re passionate outdoor lovers, inspiring storytellers, and hospitable hosts. Our people truly are our best asset and we can’t wait for you to meet them. Nothing but the best for you.

100% Carbon Neutral

The Tasmanian Walking Company operates as a 100% carbon-neutral business.

We have achieved global Gold Standard Certification for our continued effort towards carbon removal and climate change action. Our commitment to emissions reduction also extends to supporting Australia’s largest revegetation project — the Yarra Yarra Biodiversity Corridor Project, in Western Australia.

Small Groups, Wild Places

Group size matters. That’s why we’ve spent years designing the perfect small group walking experience.

Our small groups of 8-14 guests offer an intimate experience of nature, enhanced by personal interpretation from our world- class guides. Explore World Heritage wilderness by day, breathe the Earth’s cleanest air, and enjoy the freedom of wild, wide open spaces. By night, celebrate with your fellow walkers in comfort, and safety.

Lightweight Backpacks

We’ve designed our walking experiences to make sure your focus is on nature, not the weight of your pack.

When you walk with us, you’ll carry the lightest possible backpack — containing only your clothes, water bottle and lunch. We’ll carry the heavy load so you can do what you came for — enjoying nature.

Giving Back to Nature

We treasure the natural environment that we’re lucky enough to work in.

The Tasmanian Walking Company gives back to that environment by supporting education, training, reforestation and wildlife programs that contribute to the conservation and cultural heritage of our wild places. To continue this important work, we’ve created the not-for-profit Tasmanian Walking Company Foundation.

Multi-Award Winning Operator

Over the past 35 years, the Tasmanian Walking Company has received many awards.

But we’re not in this for the prizes. We see these awards as a confirmation of our commitment to providing the best possible experience for our guests, and to always operating with respect and care for the natural places in which we work.

Private Eco-Accommodation

Your wilderness experience with the Tasmanian Walking Company doesn’t end when you finish walking for the day.

Even at night, you’ll still be immersed in nature. All of our sustainably built, private eco-accommodation is located within, or on the edge of Tasmania’s beautiful national parks—for your exclusive use.

35 Years' Experience

Since 1987, we’ve guided more than 80,000 guests through Australia’s beautiful natural places.

We’re a trusted company of experienced leaders, guides and walk operators, with a passionate commitment to sustainability. We continue to share our love of wild places with our guests through our exceptional walking experiences, and world-class guiding, storytelling and interpretation.

Welcome To Tasmanian Hikes

Tasmanian Hikes is a leader in active travel. Our company has been operating expertly guided walking tours in Tasmania for over 19 years

Our tours are designed to connect guests with nature, culture and heritage.

We cater for both Pack free & Full pack walking experiences.

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the country, the Palawa of Lutruwita/Tasmania. We pay our respect to their cultures, and to their elders, past and present. During your visit we will care for and connect to this land, as did the traditional and rightful owners. – Nayri Nina-tu

First let me say that the overall trip was amazing and far exceeded my expectations. Secondly the food was impressive! Not one meal was less than delicious and I was staggered that food could be produced to that standard for that many people within the limitations of being hiked in and cooked on fuel stoves. Clearly it is a well honed machine.

How to get to Tasmania

Getting to Tasmania is fairly simple with only two options depending on where in Australia or in the rest of the world you're coming from. Tasmania has two major airports, Hobart International Airport and Launceston airport, that facilitate services to each of Australia's states. Hobart International Airport also welcomes services from international airlines such as Etihad Airways, Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, and American Airlines (among others). If you don't want to fly, you can catch the Spirit of Tasmania from Victoria (Port Melbourne) which will take you to the coastal town of Devonport (about an hour's drive from Launceston).

When is the best time to walk in Tasmania?

Tasmania enjoys fairly nice weather all year round with mild summers and cold to freezing winters that result in snow-dusted landscapes in some areas. This means that the best time to go on a walking tour in Tasmania can differ depending on what type of weather you want to experience. If you want the days to feature sparkling blue skies and warming sunshine then traveling during the months of September through to February is the way to go. If you want crisper weather and wonderland-like scenery then head to the island state from the months of March to August.

What to pack for a trip to Tasmania?

Determining what to pack for a trip to Tasmania largely depends on what time of year you're planning on going with the state experiencing mild summers and cold to freezing winters. Regardless of when you're traveling, it's wise to pack some comfortable walking shoes, a hat/beanie, sunscreen, a camera, a reusable drink bottle, and a backpack/day bag. You should also pack weather-appropriate clothing such as coats and rainproof jackets, socks, and thermal tops and pants for winter, as well as dresses, shorts, and t-shirts for summer.

What are the best walks to do in Tasmania?

Tasmania is filled to the brim with breathtaking landscapes and there is a myriad of walks to ensure you can see as much natural beauty as possible. Here are our a few of favorite trails:

Tahune Airwalk

Lake St Clair Circuit, Cradle Mountain

Dove Lake Circuit, Cradle Mountain

Wineglass Bay Lookout, Freycinet

Hartz Peak, Hartz Mountains National Park

Overland Track, Cradle Mountain

Three Capes Track

Are Intrepid's Tasmania walking tours easily accessible?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. However, we’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

2 night stay in the wilderness

Our guests will enjoy two nights at the remote Corinna Wilderness Retreat set on the banks of the pristine Pieman River and surrounded by the Tarkine Rainforest. Our guests will stay in the best accommodation in the township in 1 bedroom cottages . These cottages exterior have been designed with original materials to give the look of a shanty town. Whilst the interiors of each cottage are modern and warm with cosy fires, ensuites and individual verandahs where you can sit back and soak up the scenery and atmosphere.

Tarkine Wilderness Walk

It is astonishing that we still need to campaign to save Tasmania’s Tarkine wilderness in the second decade of the 21st century. But we do. The threats are real and current: some Eucalypts and rainforest coupes are to be logged in the next three years, 95% of the region is subject to mineral exploration permits and, off-road vehicles continue to destroy fragile coastal aboriginal sites with nobody held to account. To see how you can help. Click on the link below to the “Save the Tarkine”. You can sign up to get involved and find out how you can help save this unique and threatened landscape.

Words from happy walkers

Couldn't have been better! Much more than a pub tour, it was an excellent glimpse into the lifestyle of early Hobart and the interesting characters of the times. Our guide was very knowledgeable and very patiently answered all our questions. Great fun even if you aren't a drinker - the 2 pubs we stopped in are quite happy to serve hot nonalcoholic beverages to ward off the chill!

A must do tour in Hobart for everyone! What a wonderful way to spend some time in Hobart. In just 90 minutes we learned many new and interesting facts about the history of Hobart despite being Tasmanians and having spent years living in Hobart. Never knew there was a Hunter Island and a causeway which are marked with bronze plaques in Hunter Street. Other facts of interest included the Hobart "Water Gate"; that the Town Hall is a replica of a building in Rome; the location of the former Gaol and where public hangings were carried out; where Governor Collins is buried and the stories behind the preserved headstones in St David's Park and how Salamanca Place was given its' name. Best of all, guide Barry was personable, knowledgeable and kept our interest the entire time. So pleased we decided to be "tourists" for a day in Hobart.

Hobart Urban Walk...new discoveries! Our Claremont College VET Tourism class walked the streets of old and new Hobart with our terrific tour guide John. His passion for this historic Australian city showed in his knowledge and presentation. A few favourite discoveries were 'ghost signs', the rivulet running through the city, learning the history of the historic buildings and getting tour guide tips along the way.... Thanks John and Hobart Historic Tours.

Old Hobart Pub Tour. One of the best “city tours” we’ve done ... anywhere! Our Guide John was fantastic - very knowledgeable and very easy to get on with. Easy to organise and then a lovely stroll through the streets of down town Hobart visiting some great pubs! I would recommend this tour and Hobart Historic Tours generally to anyone! Spoil yourselves - you won’t regret it!

Thank you for booking us on the Grand Hobart Walk. I would just like to say that our guide Bill was outstanding. He was knowledgeable, engaging and has a genuine passion for his role. We would definitely recommend Bill and the organisation.

Welcoming and informative Old Hobart Pub Walking Tour Maggie is one of the most accomplished tour guides we have ever had the pleasure of learning from. Friendly, kind, knowledgeable. The walking tour itself was full of interesting content delivered expertly and engagingly. We had a group of eight and we were all friends by the end. Would recommend again and again. Thank you Hobart Historic Tours.

Happy to report that Maggie was flexible with the start time after we decided to do some impromptu art! She took us on an intriguing trip back in time and now when I walk around Hobart I’m seeing so much more interesting things than I did before. The pub visits were perfect and ensured we had adequate hydration and nutrition.

I can’t recommend the experience, or Maggie as guide, enough.

Loved every minute of the walking tour! Tony was very friendly and knowledgeable and his passion for the history of Hobart was wonderful. He prepared maps for us to help us get our bearings and he had lots of old photos to share. We loved learning about this beautiful city from a local who obviously loves living here. Thank you, Tony, for sharing your knowledge and stories with us.

Our Tour Guide Sara was wonderful. She was enthusiastic, easy to be with, very willing to answer questions and provided lots of very interesting information.

I will recommend the walk to other visitors and local residents.

Who will I meet on the tour?

Get ready to tour Tasmania with like-minded travellers from all parts of the world. A typical group will include a mix of nationalities and ages. For this reason this tour is a great option for solo travellers, couples, and groups who are excited for Tasmania’s wild places and wildlife.

How many people will be on my tour?

The maximum group size is 21 guests plus the tour guide. These small group sizes allow you plenty of time to get to know your fellow travellers and guide. The tours are conducted in modern, comfortable air-conditioned buses. Luggage is carried in a trailer.

Can I arrive in Tasmania the day my tour departs?

No, You will need to arrive in Hobart at least the day before your tour is scheduled to depart, due to the early start to your day.

How much luggage can I bring?

You may bring a backpack or suitcase up to 20kg that will be stored securely in a trailer during the day and unloaded each evening. We recommend bringing a smaller day pack to store your daily essentials such as drinks, jackets and sunscreen while on tour.

What are the walks like?

The walking in Tasmania is world-class, and this tour offers select beautiful walking experiences for guests that range in difficulty and duration. All walks are optional, and take from 20 minutes to up to 4 hours. Track conditions vary considerably, and may include: boardwalks, steps, rocks, mud, sand, gravel or paved paths. In general, there are easier and harder options to choose from at each location. Some walks are guided, while others are unguided (free-walking). Your guides will provide you with information on the walks in advance. Most importantly, choose a walk suitable for your fitness level and physical capacity, the weather, and your experience, ensuring that you have the appropriate attire such as sturdy walking footwear, rain gear and warm clothing.

How can you explore Tasmania as a responsible traveller?

As an Advanced eco-certified tour company with Ecotourism Australia, Under Down Under makes every effort to practise responsible tourism.

As a guest visiting Tassie and discovering the exquisite parks, wildlife and people, you have a role to play too. Please consider your impact as you travel. Here’s a few easy tips to make your experience a positive one for the environment and its people.

Leave No Trace as you explore. Support local businesses and sample Tasmania’s finest foods, produce and goods. Bring a “keep-cup” (for coffees), refillable water-bottle and a reusable shopping bag. Turn taps off when not in use, and please be especially mindful of places that rely on rain-water tanks. Turn off lights, heating or aircon when you’re not in your room. Help us Keep Wildlife Wild – your guides will explain more about how to do this while on tour.

Do I need travel insurance?

We endorse the recommendation of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade that all travellers take out travel insurance. If you already have Travel Insurance please understand that it is your responsibility to ensure that your Travel Insurance covers you for all of the adventure style travel you have booked with us.

World Nomads travel insurance policies offer coverage for more than 150 activities. Get a quote, make a claim, or buy or extend your policy while on the road.

The top 5 remote stays in Tasmania

Kate Hennessy

Travel Journalist

23 May 2024

Time

Nowhere in Australia has mastered middle-of-nowhere luxury like Tasmania. Expect silence, solitude and quite a lot of moss.

If accommodation with a splash of Tasmanian noir and a dash of edge-of-the-world remoteness is what you crave, look no further than these five stays. Each brings a unique take on getting guests disconnected from daily life and in sync with nature instead. Easily spooked? Bring a partner or pal.

1. The Keep

The Keep in Tasmania/lutruwita’s north east ticks all of the remote accommodation boxes – and then some. It begins with the drive. As the nearest tiny town of Pioneer fades in the rear-view mirror, the dirt roads get increasingly narrow, and wombats lumber obliviously from the bush.

Few, if any, people come down these old logging roads. An iron gate five kilometres from the accommodation is extra assurance you won’t see another human (unless a private chef or helicopter trip has been arranged).

Shortly before arrival the road inclines steeply above the tree line and The Keep looms into view. Built on a stony 650-metre pinnacle in the style of the towers favoured by European nobility during the Middle Ages as lookouts for invaders, the building has 360-degree views of the Bay of Fires and Flinders Island. The property’s 101 hectares of private reserve is set within a much larger sea of trees, so the solitude and silence are overwhelming.

The Keep is kitted out with vinyl records, a bijou reading room, Tasmanian noir artworks, eight ways to make coffee and a sleek mid-century bar with a bottle of Lark whisky. In the fridge is local wine, beer, a selection of vintage French Champagne and high-quality breakfast provisions.

Nestled among dramatic granite boulders, an outdoor bath offers panoramic views, while the property’s bushwalks showcase lush man-ferns, Tasmania’s oldest Myrtle Beech tree and some rather startled pademelons.

The Keep is targeted at couples with no kids or pets in tow. Solo travellers should bring a pal (who they’re comfortable sharing a King bed with) because going alone may be too ‘Capital A’ alone for some. Avoid driving at dawn, dusk or at night when wildlife is on the move.

2. Corinna Wilderness Experience

Because Corinna offers several cottages, campsites and a pub, you may forget you’re in the middle of one of only three cool temperate rainforests globally: takayna/The Tarkine . This wilderness is half the size of Lebanon and is where the survival competition series Alone Australia (Season 1) was filmed. The nearest town of Waratah is an hour-plus drive down an unsealed road. The west coast town of Strahan , meanwhile, is 60 kilometres south.

Corinna was established in the 1890s on the traditional land of the Petaanidik peoples as a township for “miners and piners”. These days, it’s a rustic and convivial place to meet fellow travellers though the frontier look and feel remains strong.

The Tarkine Hotel in Corinna, Tas

The Tarkine Hotel is tucked within a remote and rugged landscape. (Image: Chris Crerar)

Several hikes leave from Corinna’s grounds. The Whyte River loop is both enchanting and easy, while the longer and harder Mt Donaldson trail is a short drive away. On clear days, rented kayaks can be paddled on the tannin-stained Pieman River (keep an eye out for platypus or sea eagles.) Cabins are equipped to prepare simple meals, but most guests congregate on the Tarkine Hotel for pub grub.

Tree lovers will spy Huon pine, myrtle beech, sassafras and leatherwood trees in the misty, mossy, luminously green rainforest. Autumn is fungi season when The Tarkine’s multicoloured mushrooms are a highlight. Tasmanian devils and spotted-tailed quolls can be seen, and the cool damp environment is also home to invertebrates such as large Land Snails, Walking Worms and the world’s largest freshwater invertebrate, the Giant Tasmanian Freshwater Crayfish.

3. Pumphouse Point

At the tippy top of a 275-metre jetty on leeawuleena/Lake St Clair is the five-storey, adults-only guest house, Pumphouse Point . Completed in 1940 as a pumphouse for Tasmania’s Hydro-Electric Commission, it is particularly photogenic at night when illuminated by red lights. Sleeping on the lake with crows cawing by is an experience of pure Tasmanian noir.

Based at the southern end of Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park , this is a walkers’ wonderland with 100 kilometres of tracks, including the magical Overland Track . If it’s not great weather for an intrepid walk, e-bikes, rowboats, books and board games will keep you entertained.

While larders and honesty bars are provided, room rates include breakfasts and dinners in the Shorehouse restaurant, with set menus featuring seasonal ingredients. Don’t miss a lakeside stroll for driftwood spotting.

4. On Board

The Southwest National Park is Tasmania’s largest expanse of wilderness and perhaps its most fearsomely inaccessible of all. This is why On Board ‘s expedition vessel, Odalisque III , is such a treat.

With a passenger list capped at 12, founder and skipper Pieter van der Woude sails nature lovers to parts of the national park network that are otherwise impossible to access.

On Board’s signature experience is a five-day journey around Port Davey . This area has three hats: a national park, a protected marine park and a UNESCO Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

Nature lovers can join a five-day journey around Port Davey.

Guests can choose walking-oriented trips (think rainforests, button grass plains and quartzite mountain peaks), wellness journeys (journalling and cold plunging), or dedicated photography expeditions. Back onboard, food miles are minimised, and local materials and makers are featured.

5.  Satellite Island

Your destination is an island off an island off an island. And once there you (and up to eight companions) will have it all to yourself. The best way to reach the end-of-the-world beauty of Satellite Island is from Hobart via Bruny Island . Stock up on provisions on Bruny and maybe you’ll get to supplement them with wild-caught oysters or abalone plucked from the water close to your bed.

The two bedrooms in The Boathouse were once salmon feed sheds. The original roller doors remain, so the stars and sunrise are viewable while horizontal. Up a cliff-face stairway is the three-bedroom Summer House.

There, guests will also find chickens for fresh eggs, an open fireplace, a stone fruit orchard, a garden full of fragrant herbs and, best of all, a Japanese onsen-style bath that fills with ocean water heated to 38 degrees.

Wake up to stunning water views. (Image: Kara Rosenlund)

So much, or so little, can be done on Satellite Island. At low tide, you can walk the 30-hectare island on foot to see the ancient fossils in the rock shelf or circumnavigate it by kayak. Sunsets are wonderful at Last Glimpse Point with nothing between you and Antarctica .

Sandy roams and beachcombs showcase hidden coves and shorelines clunking with glossy pebbles. Alternatively, walk the island’s interior to see native golden grasses rippling in the breeze. While tropical islands get all the glory, Tasmanian ones are better.

Introductory

These trips involve trekking or walking for up to five or six hours a day at a slow but steady pace. You will need a reasonable level of fitness and good health. Terrain may include undulations, rocky surfaces, bush scrub or boardwalks.

The majority of our trips are rated Introductory to Moderate. These trips involve a combination of introductory and moderate walking conditions in remote areas. Some days may see you walking a slow and steady pace for up to 6 hours in the day. Other days may be more difficult, involving early morning departures and ascents to lookouts. Depending on the trip, you may be expected to carry either a day-pack or a full pack of around 15kgs. Terrain may include walking off-track, through bush and scrublands, or on duckboards and boardwalks, or a combination of these.

Moderate to Challenging

This trip grading involves a combination of what is described in our ‘Moderate’ and ‘Challenging’ levels. The emphasis is on moderate activity with several challenging stages. These trips can involve more physical challenges such as tougher terrain, harsh conditions or high ascents. Self guided adventures rated moderate to challenging involve carrying a full pack and being self-reliant (with emergency support available).

Challenging

These adventures involve trekking, cycling or rafting in remote areas for up to 8 to 10 hours a day, possibly more. With remoteness comes potential to encounter variable weather conditions. You will need an excellent level of fitness, be prepared to carry a full pack weighing up to 20kgs and be completely comfortable in adverse weather conditions and remote locations where evacuation may be very difficult.

Wilderness Camping

When trekking in the Top End dry season our camping arrangements are delightfully lightweight. As we don't have to worry about bad weather we can make the most of the clear skies and sleep under the stars. Each trekker will carry a mozzie dome tent (a lightweight, netted tent). These can fit two people or we have enough for individual use.

On this trip we camp in the Jatbula's designated campsites. Each camp has composting toilets. The guides carry lightweight group tarps that act as shade or shelter in the unlikely event of unseasonal rain.

On our first night, we stay between Katherine and Nitmiluk, enjoying authentic Top End accommodation in comfortable safari tents. This nights accommodation is on a twin-share basis so if you are an individual traveller we will accommodate you with another traveller of the same sex. If you would prefer to guarantee a single room a single supplement is available pending availability.

The Arnhem Land escarpment is an exceptional wilderness area which winds its way along the edge of Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk) to Edith Falls (Leliyn) creating a truly extraordinary hiking experience. The Jatbula Trail in the Nitmiluk National Park features magnificent waterfalls tumbling from high quartzite cliffs where shady monsoon forests line the creeks and stunning Jawoyn Aboriginal rock art adorns the caves and overhangs. The tropical equivalent of Tasmania's Overland Track, this full pack carrying bushwalk traverses the heart of this amazing part of Australia. You will trek during the cooler months to ensure the best experience of the tropical environment. With crystal-clear creeks throughout, there are abundant opportunities for swimming and just relaxing in the warm croc-free waters.

This adventure involves trekking for up to 6 or 7 hours a day at a steady pace in remote locations. You will need a good level of fitness and must be in good health. You must be capable of walking over rough ground while carring a full pack (approx 15-17kg). You need to be prepared for walking in hot daytime temperatures (in winter temperatures can reach 30 degrees Celsius). Each day will also present to you a new set of challenges, from river crossings to hill climbs, there will be flat open country on the top of the escarpment and boggy wet country along the creeks that we follow. Previous multi day walking experience is preferred. Suggested preparation: 45 minutes of aerobic type exercise, three to four times a week (this can be cycling, jogging or walking) interspersed with relatively demanding bushwalks carrying a full pack weight (up to 17kg). You should walk regularly with a weighted day pack (5–7kg) for several hours for leg strengthening and aerobic fitness. The best preparation for your trek is multi day bushwalking involving relatively steep ascents and descents and in variable weather conditions.

Lunch could be a variety of sandwich rolls, wraps, salads and soups. Snacks/entree may include fruits, cheese, dips and crackers, and trail mix. Sometimes we mix it up with seasoned popcorn, papadama, tom yum soup etc. Dinners are yummy filling dishes like pasta, dahl and rice, stroganoff or maybe even a laksa. For dessert, you could enjoy things like an apple crumble, cake slice or fruit and chocolate. This is just a sample menu idea.

We operate the trip from June to August when walking conditions are at their best. During the cooler months, from June to August, the temperatures range from 30 degrees Celsius during the day dropping to 10 degrees Celsius at night. Conditions on the trail start to heat up in mid-August with temperatures rising to over 40 degrees Celsius from October to late November.

The terrain is varied throughout the track. On the jatbula Trail you can expect to experience river crossings and hill climbs, there will be flat open country on the top of the escarpment and boggy wet country along the creeks that we follow. ? When should I arrive in Darwin?

You must arrive in Darwin the day before your trek begins. The trip commences with a COMPULSORY pre-departure briefing in the afternoon on the day before departure. It is ESSENTIAL that you make your travel arrangements to enable you to attend this briefing.

Yes, you should expect to carry about 3kg of the group food along with your snacks for the week.
