Caribbean cruises have long been a favorite with travelers for their picture-postcard attributes. White sand beaches front turquoise waters. But these tropical itineraries have something for every type of traveler. Activities abound—perhaps it’s shopping on one island, hiking through nature reserves and snorkeling among coral reefs on another, or having a beach day on a cruise company’s private retreat. Many Caribbean itineraries skew toward tried-and-true standards, but a number of cruise lines will have a handful of unique sailings put together for particular tastes or the seasoned cruiser who has already tried them all.

Some of these sailings visit offbeat destinations like volcanic Montserrat, while others take a non-traditional southern track from Panama along the northern coast of South America. Others visit sleepier, less-frequented destinations like St. Croix, St. Barts, and Mayreau, in addition to stopping at banner spots like St. Lucia and Aruba for dramatic vistas and spectacular beaches.

Here are some of the best Caribbean cruises to book for 2023.

Unspoiled Deshaies, on Guadeloupe, is another under-the-radar call for this spectacular ship boasting butler service in every suite and a guest-to-crew ratio of nearly one-to-one.

Booking tips for Caribbean cruises

What are the best months to take a caribbean cruise.

Although some cruise lines operate in the Caribbean year-round, the widest selection of sailing dates and itineraries can be found between November and March.

What part of the Caribbean is best for a cruise?

The best Caribbean cruise is a matter of personal taste. Many cruises focus on a region, like the Southern, Eastern, or Western Caribbean, and itineraries, regardless of destination, often feature stops at cruise line operated private islands in the Bahamas.

What are the cheapest months to cruise in the Caribbean?

Generally, the beginning and end of the November-to-March season can be affordable—any time when North American schools are widely in session are also good times to cruise for lower fares.

Do you need a passport to go to on a Caribbean cruise?

Check with the cruise line before booking. U.S. citizens traveling on cruises calling at most Caribbean countries can do so with both an enhanced state ID and an original birth certificate in lieu of a passport, but a passport is by far the easiest form of identification (and most strongly recommended by both the U.S. State Department and most cruise lines) for U.S. citizens outside the country. It’s also important to note that documentation requirements can change, and passengers are ultimately responsible for having the required documents at embarkation or they may be denied boarding.

Four Seasons Resort Nevis

The Best Caribbean Cruise Destinations for Your Next Vacation

Whether you're a beach bum, history buff, or outdoor adventurer..

Royal Caribbean cruise ship at Labadee, Haiti

For some, cruising is all about what's on board the ship —including dining, entertainment, and on-deck pools. But let's be honest; if it was simply about the spas and swanky guest rooms, you could just book an all-inclusive resort and have an absolutely bangin' time on dry land. A cruise sets itself apart by taking you on a joy ride across the ocean, depositing you briefly at various appealing destinations along the way.

Now, we'll be honest; not every port can be a winner. But if you're cruising the Caribbean , there's a lot of fun to be found in or around some of the area's best ports. From stunning national parks to incredible beaches, interesting historical sites to beautiful architecture, world-class restaurants to adrenaline-inducing zip lines, some of the Caribbean's top cruise destinations are absolutely worth any minor seasickness you might experience along the way.

Trust us: You'll be glad you got off the boat.

St Maarten Cruise port

Philipsburg, St. Maarten

Great for: Architecture, beach time, fine French cuisine, watching planes take off If you've only got six hours: Head to Maho Beach , just across the fence from Princess Juliana International Airport , where planes take off within mere yards of the sand.

If you're not sure whether to call it "Sint Maarten" or "Saint Martin," don't worry about it. The island actually has a Dutch side and a French side, each with its own spelling. That's what makes this such a unique place to visit; it's like a trip to Europe, but more tropical (and minus the lengthy flight). Stroll around the port to take in the Dutch Colonial architecture, then take a short ride over to the French side , which is like a tropical Saint-Tropez with top-notch restaurants. Beaches on both sides of the island might be small, but are pretty much all stunningly gorgeous—including the clothing-optional Orient Bay Beach.

If you haven't filled up on French cuisine, be sure to grab a plate of cod fritters or creole-spiced fish from one of the island's lolos (local outdoor restaurants) before you head back to your cruise ship; the island is considered one of the Caribbean's great food destinations for a reason.

Basseterre, St. Kitts

Basseterre, St. Kitts

Great for: Historical sites, national parks, beach time If you've only got six hours:  Take the 45-minute ferry ride over to Nevis , where you can visit historical sites (including the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton) or relax on quieter beaches. Or, alternatively, hike through one of the island's multiple national parks.

With monkey-filled jungle wilderness, dormant volcanoes you can easily hike in an afternoon, and plenty of historical sites, this is one of the most diverse cruise ports in the islands. Touring Caribbean relics like the 350-year-old Romney Manor , the colonial town square, or the Brimstone Hill Fortress lets you experience what life must have been like here in the 1700s. If colonial-era imbibing is more your speed, the beach bars in Frigate Bay are a relaxing way to drink away your time on the island. And if you're more of an outdoorsy type, you can't skip the lush rainforest of  Central Forest Reserve National Park , though those who would rather not walk can also catch island views from the St. Kitts Scenic Railway .

Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

Great for:  Museums, shopping, water parks If you've only got six hours: Hit the Ocean World adventure park , where marine mammals live happily and humanely in a giant lagoon. You can also swim with dolphins, sharks, and sea lions, or enjoy the massive attached water park.

This lesser-known spot on the north coast of the Dominican Republic features a port at Amber Cove , where you can find water slides, hilltop and in-water cabanas, and exceptional shopping, as well as a brand new port at Taíno Bay  that just opened in 2021. But venture outside the ports and you'll find a city where you can experience Dominican culture and look at Victorian architecture. There's also an entire museum devoted to amber and some of the most underrated beaches in the DR.

San Juan Puerto Rico fort

San Juan, Puerto Rico

Great for:  Wilderness hiking, historic sites, dining, nightlife If you've only got six hours: Take a short tour bus ride to El Yunque, the only tropical rainforest in the US National Park System.

As a major port of departure for cruises to the Southern Caribbean, San Juan is hardly a hidden gem. But it's easy enough to visit nearby Old San Juan, where you can hit up the 16th-century  El Morro , 18th-century  Fort San Cristobal , and the well-known  Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery allowing you to really dig into Spanish colonial history (or at least, as much as you can while on a cruise).

Puerto Rico is huge, and the island's best beaches aren’t necessarily accessible if you're just there for the day. But the rainforest at El Yunque can be visited in a few hours, the Bacardi distillery isn't far out of town, and the dining and nightlife options are expansive. And hey, if you really want to visit a beach, you definitely can; you'll find a number of beaches within the city of San Juan, including sandy Isla Verde .

Beach in Bridgetown, Barbados

Bridgetown, Barbados

Great for: Coral sand beaches, shopping, diving If you've only got six hours: Dive or snorkel along the coral reef, within a couple miles of the shoreline. The island isn't as popular as ones close to the US, so the reefs are more pristine and full of colorful marine life.

Barbados is the easternmost island in the Caribbean (technically in the Atlantic), so the waves and breaks on its eastern coast make for some of the most impressively rugged coastline in the islands. A 4x4 tour out here is definitely worth your time, though a stroll through the historic British colonial capital of Bridgetown is a whole different kind of impressive. If you want to get in the water, there are a number of shipwrecks near the island, in addition to that pristine coral reef.

Labadee, Haiti

Labadee, Haiti

Great for:  Beach time, zip-lining, and other thrills If you've only got six hours: Speed down the exhilarating 500-foot-high Dragon's Breath zip line . It takes you out over the water and is the longest zip line in the world.

In contrast with other Caribbean ports, Labadee is actually a private resort for the exclusive use of  Royal Caribbean passengers. As a result, you won't visit the port with other cruise lines, and you'll also basically be at a resort during your entire stay. That said, it's still worth the trip, offering tranquil white sand beaches backing up to towering jungle mountains. If you fancy a little adventure, you can even take a ride on the world's largest zip line, an alpine coaster, or a 300-foot-long waterslide.

Kralendijk, Bonaire

Kralendijk, Bonaire

Great for: Diving, snorkeling, outdoor adventures, wildlife If you've only got six hours: You might not have enough time for a full two-tank dive, but try and at least get in the water at the Bonaire National Marine Park . Its miles of accessible, protected coral reef have given the small island a reputation of the diving capital of the world.

Bonaire is the go-to destination for divers seeking the best the waters of the Caribbean have to offer. But an afternoon here isn't limited to those with PADI certifications. Don't get us wrong, if you've got a card you absolutely must hit the marine park—but even snorkeling around Klein Bonaire is better than the diving almost anywhere in the US. If you prefer to find your adventure on dry land, a hike through Washington Slagbaai National Park will take you through a spectacular desert with more than 200 different species of birds. Animal lovers will also love boat or kayak tours at  Bonaire's Wild Bird Rehab , befriending the donkeys at the Donkey Sanctuary , or taking in the colors at the Bonaire Butterfly Farm .

Panama City, Panama

Colón, Panama

Great for: Drinking, dining, nightlife If you've only got six hours: Take the hour-long trip into Panama City. It's a steel-and-glass marvel, and the most modern city in Latin America.

Yes, the Panama Canal and Miraflores locks are the obvious draw here, and a cruise stop is the easiest and least congested way to see them both. But at the Colon 2000 port, you'll be docking so close to the canal that seeing them won't take up much of your time. When you're done checking out the canal, take a ride to Panama City , just over an hour away. It's the only foreign metropolis you can visit on a Caribbean cruise, and gives you a chance to see how this country has exploded economically since regaining control of the canal.

Once you're in the city, admire the old-meets-new architecture, a blend of historic buildings and towering skyscrapers. If a museum day appeals, make your way over to the Biomuseo , an interactive biodiversity museum, or check out the Panama Canal Museum if you haven't had your fill of the canal. You'll find plenty of restaurants and nightlife here, too; grab food and drinks with a rooftop view at Lazotea or  CasaCasco .

Roatán, Honduras

Roatán, Honduras

Great for: Diving, snorkeling, outdoor adventures, wildlife If you've only got six hours: Dive or snorkel the second-largest coral reef in the world.

Though it's not nearly as sleepy as it might have been a decade ago, Roatán is still one of the most pleasantly serene ports you'll find on a cruise. The largest of Honduras' Bay Islands, it's the launching point for excursions to see the marine life off the second-largest coral reef in the world. Even if you're not into diving, the nature here is still spectacular. Kayak through mangroves, zip-line above the jungle, or tip-toe across a 237-foot-long suspension bridge while observing the island's considerable array of wildlife at Gumbalimba Park . And while the beaches are pretty, you might want to skip them unless you're the only ship in port.

Stingray City, Grand Cayman

George Town, Grand Cayman

Great for:  Dining, shipwreck dives, swimming with stingrays If you've only got six hours: Take a short boat ride to Stingray City , a sandbar where you'll literally be surrounded by rays. Afterwards, enjoy a drink at Rum Point .

It's hard to go wrong with the absolute paradise that is Grand Cayman. The food scene here is unmatched, with seafood restaurants from the likes of Eric Ripert , plus an annual culinary cookout that draws A-list food celebs from the world over. In terms of water activities, you can swim with the rays at Stingray City, or take a dive to explore the  Kittiwake , one of the  coolest shipwrecks in the Western Hemisphere.

Eagle Beach, Aruba

Oranjestad, Aruba

Great for:  Hiking, desert adventures, sunny beaches If you've only got six hours: Spend them at Eagle Beach , recently declared one of the best beaches in the world .

Aruba calls itself "One Happy Island," which might have something to do with the fact that it rarely experiences a rainy day. So if you're looking for a warm, sunny excursion to the famed Eagle Beach, you're practically guaranteed nice weather. If you can bring yourself to leave the beach, however, you'll be glad you did. Even a short port call should allow you time to check out the spectacular landscape of  Arikok National Park , which despite its Caribbean location, has rugged, desert-like terrain filled with cacti—overlooking the sea, of course.

The Caribbean is arguably the most popular cruise destination, and therefore nearly every cruise line has itineraries across the Eastern, Western or Southern Caribbean -- from the world's largest ships to small sailing yachts. Examples of cruise lines that go to the Caribbean include MSC Cruises, Norwegian, Holland America, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Viking Ocean, Princess and Windstar. To help you decide: Compare Top Cruise Ships in the Caribbean .

What are some things to do in the Caribbean?

Apart from beaches and bars, the Caribbean contains endless islands with unique identities that offer historical and cultural attractions as well as active pursuits. Hike the Virgin Islands National Park in St. John, USVI; snorkel an underwater sculpture park in Grenada or zip line in an eco park in St. Maarten. For just a sample of what to do, check out: Best Western Caribbean Shore Excursions .

Do you need a passport to take a cruise to the Caribbean?

You can visit the Caribbean without a passport on a closed-loop sailing (one that begins and ends in the same U.S. port). Examples include cruises that depart and return to Galveston, Tampa, Baltimore or Orlando. Some Caribbean ports, including Martinique and Guadeloupe, will not allow cruisers to get off the ship and enter the country without a passport, so check your itinerary and cruise line instructions.

What should I pack for a cruise to the Caribbean?

In addition to your lightweight clothes, pack sun protection while visiting the Caribbean -- and consider reef-safe sunscreen and bug spray. Sun showers can happen, so a thin waterproof layer or umbrella might keep you dry during a surprise thunderstorm.

7 Caribbean Cruises We Love

These luxurious, intimate ships and itineraries are afar’s top picks for exploring the region..

The Caribbean is by far the world’s most popular cruise region—some 11.9 million passengers sailed in the Caribbean, Bahamas, and Bermuda in 2022, according to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), compared to 3.2 million in the western and central Mediterranean, the next biggest market. Travelers board ships headed to the region year-round for sunny skies, sugary white sands, and the crystal blue sea. While it’s not exactly an under-the-radar destination, the best Caribbean cruises will bring you to multiple islands, including some lesser-frequented gems, and away from the larger cruise ship crowds.

On these cruises, you can explore the fascinating and diverse cultures and traditions throughout the Caribbean, and free your mind while hiking tropical landscapes or diving with colorful sea creatures. Small and medium-size ships get you to both known ports and off-the-beaten path places for more intimate beach and island experiences.

Where Caribbean cruises sail

The standard cruise routes in the Caribbean that the big ships visit, often on sailings from ports in Florida, are designed for a joyous and carefree vacation escape, at a price that many people can afford.

Eastern Caribbean cruises sail to tried-and-true islands such as the Bahamas , St. Thomas, St. Maarten, and sometimes Puerto Rico . Western Caribbean itineraries visit islands such as Grand Cayman, Jamaica , and Cozumel, or other ports in Mexico, and sometimes Belize and Honduras. Southern Caribbean cruises might venture to the Leeward Antilles for a taste of Dutch Caribbean culture, and attractions such as the otherworldly landscape of Aruba’s Arikok National Park .

Other popular places on the standard cruise map include the Dominican Republic , where you will find the oldest street in the Americas in the capital city of Santo Domingo; and Tortola, the largest of the British Virgin Islands, with access to beaches and mountain treks.

Ships that carry fewer than 1,000 people, and sometimes much less than that, have more flexibility in terms of ports, and sail on itineraries that venture to more low-key patches of paradise, such as the smaller British Virgin Islands; French Caribbean islands that include Guadeloupe, Martinique, and St. Bart’s ; and south to the glorious, unspoiled Grenadines and Grenada .

Smaller ships also tend to slow down itineraries, with late nights or overnights in port, so that you can enjoy the local nightlife. The departure points for these cruises are places you may want to linger before or after your sailing, such as lively Barbados , both a culinary and rum capital.

Explora Journeys’ A Journey to an Arcadian Antilles Adventures

  • Best for: luxury family sailing
  • To book: 7-night Journey to an Arcadian Antilles Adventures, round-trip from Barbados, from $4,850 per person (with discounted rates for children)
  • Islands: St. Lucia, St. Kitts, St. Bart’s (overnight), Dominica, Martinique, Grenada

Geneva-based MSC Group , which also owns European cruise line MSC Cruises, launched Explora Journeys this year in an effort to bring the casual luxury resort experience to the high seas. The new line’s recently debuted first ship, the 922-passenger Explora I (which we recently reviewed ), is a posh multi-generational playground with four pools, pickleball, ample live entertainment, 18 restaurants and lounges, suites that connect to accommodate family groups and, key for those with youngsters, a supervised program for kids age 6 to 17 that’s open until midnight each day. The cushy Nautilus Club is equipped with foosball and the latest generations of video games and VR consoles, with activities such as technology tournaments, plus discussions on ocean conservation. Children’s bathrobes, slippers, and hangers match adult amenities. The luxe line has kids’ pricing too—up to 50 percent off fares.

Island Windjammers’ 6-night Caribbean sailing

  • Best for: laid-back island vibe
  • To book: 6-night sailing on the 26-passenger Vela , from $2,825 per person
  • Islands: St. Bart’s and Anguilla

Island Windjammers is the kind of under-the-radar experience you want to keep a secret. Fans love this tiny cruise line that keeps alive the long tradition of casual windjammer cruising in the Caribbean—with a 26-passenger classic clipper ship, Vela , and a 10-passenger schooner, Diamant . The company has been around since 2009 and has an amazing track record with its loyal customer base; so, if you want to book a cruise, you’d best do so well in advance. And don’t overpack; these sailings are very casual—T-shirts and shorts are the standard dress code. This experience is about lingering on islands or hanging out on deck, watching the sails catch the breeze, relaxing with a complimentary rum punch and dining alfresco. There’s also the thrilling opportunity to jump into the water from the rope swing, or to get out onto the sea on a selection of water toys, such as paddleboards and kayaks.

SeaDream Yacht Club’s Saba, the Grenadines and Beyond cruise

  • Best for: small ship experience
  • To book: 7-night Caribbean itinerary , from $3,899 per person
  • Islands: Antigua, Nevis, Saba, St. Bart’s (overnight), Guadeloupe (Îles des Saintes), Bequia and Mayreau (St. Vincent & the Grenadines), Barbados

SeaDream Yacht Club’s pair of yachts, SeaDream I and SeaDream II , cruise to dreamy Caribbean destinations in relaxed luxury. My favorite of the line’s Caribbean itineraries sails between St. John’s, Antigua, and Bridgetown, Barbados, and includes the less-visited Grenadines, though you also can’t go wrong with sailings that linger, for instance, in the British Virgin Islands. Recently renovated with a more contemporary vibe, the 112-passenger yachts deliver such luxuries as a romantic open-air overnight under a cozy duvet in a Balinese Dream Bed, isolated on the bow. There are new designer hammocks and parasols out on deck, too, as well as a pair of Jacuzzis for two. Dining is mostly alfresco, adding to the romance of being at sea.

Silversea’s Bridgetown to Fort Lauderdale, Florida cruise

  • Best for: eco-conscious luxury ship
  • To book: 7-night Bridgetown to Fort Lauderdale cruise , from $4,950 person
  • Islands: Barbados, Bequia, St. Lucia, Dominica, Antigua, Virgin Gorda, Puerto Rico (San Juan)

On ultraluxury line Silversea’s new Silver Nova , guests linger on a reimagined resort deck with the pool not in the center, as on most cruise ships, but off to the side for optimal sea views. Relaxing on a cushy lounge chair on the Euro-centric ship (headquartered in Monaco, Silversea vessels feature contemporary Italian furnishings and a European feel onboard), you might imagine you are at a fancy resort in, say, St. Tropez. New outdoor dining and imbibing spaces add to the elevated beach club vibe. The 728-passenger ship is both the largest and most eco-friendly ship in the fleet, equipped with a large-scale hybrid power source, which combines hydrogen fuel cells, batteries, and dual engines that run on liquified natural gas. For foodies, the S.A.L.T. program focuses on local food and drink culture, both on and off the ship. In Bequia, you might splurge on a bespoke excursion about sea salt that includes a six-course lunch at Grenadine Wild Sea Salt (a company that produces artisanal sea salt from the waters off Bequia). Most excursions (though not this one) are complimentary.

Viking Cruises’ West Indies Explorer itinerary

  • Best for: value
  • To book: 10-night West Indies Explorer cruise , from $3,299 per person
  • Islands: San Juan, Puerto Rico (overnight), Tortola, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, Barbados, Dominica, Antigua, St. Maarten, St. Thomas

For those seeking more than just a beach scene, Viking Cruises offers a broad selection of daily tours focused on cultural and natural attractions in its all-inclusive pricing. Onboard the 930-passenger Viking Sea , sailing from San Juan on a 10-night West Indies Explorer itinerary , passengers visit nine countries with the opportunity to deeply immerse themselves in the Caribbean’s British, French, Dutch, and African history. Learn about the rich tradition of batiking (an ancient cloth dying method) with a hands-on class in St. Kitts, and explore the role of women in agriculture at an organic farm in St. Lucia. The cruise starts with an overnight in San Juan , offering some time to better understand the rhythm of that city before sailing away. Among things we love about this ship is the Nordic Spa, where after a full day of active exploration you can heal your body with a warm soak then wake yourself up at the freezing snow grotto, before more warm water surrendering.

Virgin Voyages’ Sunsets in the Lesser Antilles

  • Best for: great dining, dancing, and entertainment for grown-ups
  • To book: 7-night Sunsets in the Lesser Antilles cruise , round-trip from San Juan, from $2,550 for two
  • Islands: Puerto Rico, St. Kitts & Nevis, Martinique, Curaçao, and Aruba

The only cruise line on this list with vessels that accommodate more than 1,000 passengers, Virgin Voyage’s 2,770-passenger ships are restricted to adults ages 18 and up and operate with more cheekiness than formality . Adults on a Virgin Voyages’ Caribbean cruise can expect an anything goes attitude, where you can dance outdoors under the stars alongside mermaids and mermen during a themed party, when not attending beach bashes on shore. By day, work up a sweat in an ’80s-style dance aerobics class or get a tattoo or piercing from one of the visiting artists in the onboard parlor. At night, play drinking games while eating at the Korean barbecue venue or enjoy a first-rate molecular dining experience with items that pop or smoke (all meals are complimentary). Embrace the detox/retox ethos onboard with time spent in the gym and spa when not partying. Big spenders might opt for a RockStar suite, where they can entertain guests when not taking a peek-a-boo shower with wide-open views of the sea. There’s a do-good aspect, too—with sustainable products such as upcycled ocean plastic sunglasses and reef-safe sunscreen available in the shops.

Windstar’s Beach Fun & Sun cruise

  • Best for: sailing ship experience
  • To book: 7-night Beach Fun & Sun: A Remote Caribbean Getaway cruise from St. Maarten, from $3,222 per person
  • Islands: In the BVI, Tortola (Soper’s Hole), Jost Van Dyke (overnight) and Virgin Gorda; Anguilla, St. Bart’s, Antigua

For an under-the-billowing-sails experience, it’s hard to top the 342-passenger Wind Surf , the largest sailing ship in the world, with sails that unfurl with the push of a computerized button (or two). You might feel like a pirate navigating the high seas on this Windstar vessel, but you can also hit the top-flight spa for an extravagant massage (indoors or open-air) and dine on excellent cuisine including fresh fish and Caribbean-influenced fare, from the official cruise line of the James Beard Foundation. There are kayaks and other water sports toys to borrow from the marina and the opportunity to walk barefoot in the sand at laid-back ports. Some of the main perks include a pampering crew and a convivial yacht club atmosphere, with live music and dancing out on deck, which are just icing on the cake.

Best cruise destinations for every type of traveler

Donna Heiderstadt

Choosing where to cruise is one half of a successful vacation: The right ship plus a carefully selected destination that matches your overall interests typically equals an enjoyable cruise experience.

So, what are the best cruise destinations for every type of traveler?

That depends. With several dozen destination options around the globe to choose from — everything from popular locales you can cruise to from U.S. ports to far-flung regions known to top many bucket lists — it can take a bit of research to find your perfect match.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter.

That's why we're here. We've been around the block (and around the world) when it comes to cruises. We've explored the most captivating cities, waded into the surf on world-class beaches, hiked unspoiled landscapes and gazed upon treasured landmarks. So before you book your next cruise, have a look at our picks for the best cruise destinations for every type of traveler.

Best cruise destination for beach lovers: The Caribbean

the best caribbean cruise destinations

When it comes to optimal sun, sand and surf, it's tough to beat the Caribbean. It also helps that every major cruise line offers multiple itineraries in the region, most from November to March but quite a few year-round. You can cruise to the Caribbean from more than 10 U.S. cities — everywhere from New York to Galveston, Texas — although the majority of Caribbean cruises sail from Florida ports: Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Port Canaveral and Tampa.

Which Caribbean islands have the best beaches? It's impossible to choose since every island is fringed by talcum-soft sand and warm turquoise water and is home to lively beach bars offering music and tropical cocktails that will make your day in the sun all the more fun.

Cruises here are offered in three regions. Eastern Caribbean cruises visit ports including St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and the British Virgin Islands. The Western Caribbean itineraries feature calls on Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Roatan, Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico. The Southern Caribbean voyages sail to islands such as St. Lucia, Barbados, Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao.

Many cruise lines also call on Nassau in the Bahamas and their own Bahamian private islands , where beach days are sublime. Some longer itineraries (10 nights or more) also combine Eastern and Southern ports of call with less-visited islands such as St. Kitts and Antigua.

Best cruise destination for history buffs: The Eastern Mediterranean

the best caribbean cruise destinations

The Eastern Mediterranean, where it meets the Adriatic, Ionian and Aegean seas, is home to century-spanning sites sure to tempt any history buff. Cruises in this region typically call on Turkey, Greece, Montenegro, Croatia and Italy, while some also visit Israel, Jordan and Cyprus. More than any other region, the Eastern Mediterranean offers cruisers the chance to step back in time simply by stepping off their ship.

For example, cruises often begin in Istanbul, home to the 6th-century Hagia Sophia and the elaborate Blue Mosque, constructed between 1609 and 1616. Ports of call also in Turkey may include Kusadasi for the nearby Roman city of Ephesus and its wondrous Library of Celsus. In Greece, medieval and Venetian architecture are thoughtfully preserved in the islands of Rhodes and Corfu, respectively. Your cruise might end in Athens, site of the 2,500-year-old Parthenon and its antiquities.

Or you can cruise from Venice, with its splendid 11th-century Basilica of San Marco and palazzo-lined canals, across the Adriatic to the coast of Croatia. These sailings typically call on Split (home to Diocletian's Palace, which dates to the 4 th century) and Dubrovnik (with its postcard-perfect 13th-century walled Old Town), as well as the island nation of Malta (realm of the Knights of St. John).

If Israel and Jordan are must-visits, look for a cruise with Holy Lands in its title. These sailings often depart from Athens and also call on several Greek islands and Cyprus.

Best cruise destination for outdoor adventurers: Alaska

the best caribbean cruise destinations

The 49 th State is a vast 665,400-square-mile wilderness. It offers an incredible 46,600 miles of coastline (longer than the shorelines of all the lower 48 states combined) and a unique and plentiful mix of wildlife. An Alaska cruise offers true outdoor adventure.

In port, choose from hiking amid boreal forests to sea kayaking among seals and sea otters. You can fish for salmon (and have it shipped home), zipline above a landscape inhabited by black bears and gaze down at massive glaciers from a seaplane or helicopter (and even land atop one).

Have a less-adventurous travel companion? They can pan for gold, ride a vintage train and dog-sled (and afterward cuddle adorable husky pups).

The Pacific Northwest port cities of Seattle, Washington and Vancouver, British Columbia are the gateways for the majority of Alaska cruises. Inside Passage itineraries are the most popular and cruise lines offer these sailings from May through September .

On a round-trip cruise, you'll call on Juneau, Alaska's remote capital that's reachable solely by sea or air and offers access to Mendenhall Glacier. Other top ports are Ketchikan, known for wet-suit snorkeling and floatplane flightseeing; Skagway, where you can combine an invigorating hike and a relaxing river float trip; and Icy Strait Point, a top spot for sea kayaking and whale watching.

A highlight for many passengers is scenic cruising in Glacier Bay National Park . This 3.3-million-acre national park is home to more than 1,000 glaciers, including the accessible and photogenic Margerie Glacier, which extends 21 miles from the mountains to the bay. Have your camera ready to capture the action as huge chunks of Windex-blue ice calve off of its 250-foot-high face with a thunderous crack and crash into the frigid waters below.

Best cruise destination for honeymooners: French Polynesia

the best caribbean cruise destinations

Lagoons that shimmer in a mosaic of the purest blues imaginable, palm-fringed islets comprised solely of pristine white sand, and Polynesian culture steeped in heart-pounding song and dance make a cruise through the islands of French Polynesia ideal for honeymooners. Tahiti and the other Society Islands — Moorea, Bora Bora, Raiatea, Huahine and Taha'a — offer a setting for celebratory romance that's scenic and sensual.

Most cruises through the Societies are seven or 10 nights, with mornings spent exploring an island's lush landscape by 4x4, visiting vanilla or black pearl farms or venturing into the lagoon for snorkeling excursions or shark and stingray feedings. In the afternoon, laze by your ship's pool or give stand-up paddleboarding a try. Diving here is also superb, so couples who are certified can experience the thrill of underwater life beyond the lagoon.

On a cultural level, couples cruising through the islands of Tahiti can try new foods such as breadfruit and poisson cru (raw fish marinated in coconut and lime juice), melt into a state of blissful relaxation with traditional taurumi massage, and experience the soul-stirring drumbeats of Polynesian dance. Be sure to pluck a plumeria blossom and place it behind your left ear — to signify that your heart is spoken for.

Best cruise destination for city explorers: The Baltic

the best caribbean cruise destinations

The sophisticated capitals of Scandinavia — Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo and Helsinki — plus other coastal cities such as Tallinn, Estonia and Gdansk, Poland, are each compelling in their own right. So, imagine the rush of urban euphoria you'll feel while exploring all of them on a Baltic (or Northern Europe) cruise from May through September.

While itineraries range from seven to 14 nights and the ports visited vary by cruise line, most sailings call on Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki and Tallinn. The Danish capital is a fascinating blend of imperial palaces, photogenic landmarks (including the vibrant waterfront of Nyhavn and the Victorian-era Tivoli Gardens) and modern culinary and design innovations.

Equally captivating is Stockholm, where a stroll through Old Town (Gamla Stan) will take you back to medieval times. A visit to the one-of-a-kind Vasa Museum offers a fascinating glimpse at a doomed 17th-century wooden warship, and a few hours in the ABBA Museum will have you humming the band's hits for hours afterward.

Then there's Helsinki. Expect to be charmed by this quirky city with its unpronounceable street names, elegant Esplanade and cache of unique churches (among them the red-brick Uspenski Cathedral and the Temppeliaukion Church, aka the Church of the Rock). And Tallinn? The city's remarkably intact medieval Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site encircled by red-capped storybook-style towers. Easily explored on foot, it's home to architectural landmarks that include Gothic-spired churches, Hanseatic merchant houses and a Pseudo-Russian cathedral.

Best cruise destination for the culturally curious: Japan

the best caribbean cruise destinations

A single-country cruise itinerary gives you a chance to enjoy a deeper dive into local culture. One of the most popular destinations for this type of immersive experience is Japan. As an island nation, it has a wealth of ports that can be explored on 12- to 14-night circle-island sailings offered by both large-ship and small-luxury cruise lines.

From the bright lights and youthful energy of modern Tokyo, an itinerary will visit 10 or so Japanese cities. Your ship will also call on Busan, South Korea as required by maritime regulations.

Kobe is your access point for Kyoto, with its temples and gardens, while Shimizu is your gateway to scenic Mt. Fuji. Visit the moving Peace Memorial Park honoring the tragedy of WWII in Hiroshima and historic Hirosaki Castle in Aomori. In Kanazawa, explore the well-preserved samurai and geisha districts. Don't miss Sakaiminato, famous for its seafood and the Izumo-taisha Grand Shrine.

Along with enjoying Japan's top sights on guided excursions, you'll also have a chance to experience the country's traditional music and dance, visit museums filled with centuries of art and soak in thermal hot springs. Be sure to sample culinary specialties, from udon noodles and sake to elaborate kaiseki multi-course feasts. Even better — you can do it all while only having to unpack once.

Best cruise destination for nature lovers: Panama Canal & Central America

the best caribbean cruise destinations

Yes, the Panama Canal is manmade, but it cuts across 82 miles of Central American jungle on the isthmus of Panama to connect the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. A transit of the circa-1914 original or the 2016 extension takes a single day. The remainder of the cruise will be spent calling on ports in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Colombia (historic coastal Cartagena), Mexico and the Caribbean.

That means there's plenty of nature to appreciate. Some ships will spend a day in Colon, Panama, which offers access to Chagres National Park and the Gamboa Rainforest Preserve. Both are home to indigenous species such as toucans, coatimundis and monkeys.

During a visit to Puntarenas, Costa Rica, the volcanic landscape and surrounding rainforest and cloud forest offer opportunities for hiking, kayaking and spotting native species such as howler monkeys, sloths and crocodiles. Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala is known for its coffee plantations and access to the historic city of Antigua. The region also offers the chance to hike the Pacaya Volcano or visit the ancient Mayan site of Iximche.

In the Caribbean, some Panama Canal itineraries call on one of the ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire or Curacao) while others visit Grand Cayman, where stellar snorkeling and diving (and interaction with the playful residents of Stingray City) are top activities. On Mexico's Pacific Coast, ports might include Huatulco, offering access to an iguana sanctuary and ecological park, or Puerto Vallarta, where you can enjoy a snorkel trip to Los Arcos de Mismaloya.

Best cruise destination for food and wine aficionados: Western Mediterranean

the best caribbean cruise destinations

Italy, France and Spain are all celebrated for their distinctive cuisines and award-winning wines, which makes a Western Mediterranean itinerary perfect for culinary enthusiasts.

The fact that the region's top cruise ports are the birthplaces of foodie favorites such as paella, pizza, spaghetti alla carbonara and moules-frites makes a cruise here a delicious indulgence. You can eat your fill of local cuisine in places such as Barcelona and Valencia in Spain, Marseille and Saint-Tropez in France, and Livorno (for Florence and Pisa), Rome and Naples in Italy.

Add in the Western Med's top island ports, and it's impossible to cruise here without enjoying some of the world's most memorable foods and flavors. Olives and olive oil are an art form on the Spanish island of Mallorca, while wild boar is a rustic favorite on the French island of Corsica. The Italian island of Sardinia is known for its strong Cannonau red wine, and Sicily is the birthplace of the famous cannoli.

Some cruise lines are especially attuned to offering their guests local culinary experiences. These take the form of shore excursions (cooking classes, market visits and farm and winery tours) and onboard dinner menus that highlight regional specialties and local wines. FYI: Cruise ships also have fully equipped fitness centers where you can work off all the extra calories you'll consume.

Best cruise destination for bucket-listers: Antarctica

the best caribbean cruise destinations

When travelers dusted off their bucket list post-pandemic one of the places they most wanted to visit was Antarctica. The seventh continent, a place that belongs to no single nation but hosts research stations from almost 30, has fascinated adventurers for decades. But the swift expansion of luxury expedition cruising over the past five to seven years has made this frozen polar frontier the "It" destination of the 2020s.

What's the experience like? On an expedition cruise, generally roundtrip from Ushuaia, Argentina, you'll first have to cross the Drake Passage, a notoriously rough and windy body of water. Safely on the other side, you'll arrive at landing points in the South Shetland Islands along the Antarctic Peninsula.

Whether viewing regiments of gleaming icebergs from your ship's deck or photographing parades of waddling penguins against a surreal landscape of ice while ashore, the experience is like no other. Some expedition itineraries also venture farther south to the continent while longer sailings call on South Georgia Island and/or the Falklands.

Antarctica requires two things of visitors. The first is a healthy budget. Expedition cruises generally start at around $12,000 per person, although some major cruise lines offer scenic cruising in Antarctica — with no landings — for under $3,000 per person. The second is a moderate fitness level to be able to venture ashore in Zodiacs and explore the rugged landscape.

The cruise season spans just five months, from mid-November to March, and you'll want to book far in advance so you have time to prepare.

Best cruise destination for travelers without a passport: Hawaii

the best caribbean cruise destinations

If you're passport-less or have let yours expire, you can still enjoy a tropical island cruise that's exotic and yet reassuringly familiar. We're talking Hawaii, where a seven-night inter-island itinerary visiting four islands doesn't require that you have a passport. These itineraries are offered year-round aboard Norwegian Cruise Line 's Pride of America.

Since you'll be cruising in U.S. territory, you don't have to worry should you need to leave the cruise early and fly back to the states because of illness or a family emergency. This can be a concern for passengers on round-trip, closed-loop sailings from Florida to the Caribbean or Bahamas who board only with a driver's license and birth certificate.

Beyond the practical, a Hawaii cruise that begins and ends in Oahu and spends two days on each of the other main islands — Maui, Kauai and the Island of Hawaii (aka the Big Island) — offers plenty of time to enjoy the sights and even experience a cultural evening activity, such as a sunset luau. You'll also avoid all the inter-island flights required for hotel stays.

Highlights of a Hawaii itinerary include a pre- or post-cruise visit to the historic sites of Pearl Harbor and perhaps even an overnight stay in Waikiki. On Maui, you can enjoy active thrills, such as biking down a switchback road on the volcanic slopes of Haleakala or snorkeling the offshore Molokini Crater.

Kauai is the place to admire the 50 th State's lushest rainforests and to cruise past the scenic cliffs of the Napali Coast. And with two ports of call on the Island of Hawaii, you'll enjoy the waterfalls of Hilo (along with access to Volcanoes National Park) and the sunny Kona coast, where snorkel trips and coffee farm visits are popular.

St. Kitts garners its popularity in part from the soft sands and buzzing nightlife of Frigate Bay. It hosts excellent festivals, most notably the St. Kitts & Nevis National Carnival (known locally as Sugar Mas). The Most Popular Cruise Destinations- Ranked

W ondering where to go on a cruise? Cruising is a popular way to vacation. It’s so popular that many people become addicted to cruising. According to data from the cruise industry, 82% of previous cruisers plan to cruise again, with 10% setting sail 3-5 times a year! But where are they cruising to? Below, you’ll find the most popular cruise destinations based on a survey conducted by the cruise industry.

The Most Popular Cruise Destinations Ranked

1. caribbean cruises.

The Caribbean, Bahamas, and Bermuda are by far the most popular cruise destinations. In 2023, the number of passengers going on cruises to these destinations reached 12.9 million, representing a 7.3% increase from 2019. That’s almost 1 million more passengers!

The popularity of Caribbean cruises is no surprise, given the accessibility from various US ports such as Boston, New York, Charlotte, SC, Norfolk, VA, Baltimore, MD, New Orleans, Galveston, TX, and Florida. You can’t beat the convenience of driving to a cruise port and going on an all-inclusive tropical island vacation without having to fly.

2. Mediterranean Cruises

The Mediterranean was the second most popular cruise destination. In 2023, 5.5 million passengers went on a Mediterranean cruise, a 23% increase from 2019.

Going on a Mediterranean cruise is one of the easiest ways to explore Europe. For example, an Eastern Mediterranean cruise is an effortless way to visit multiple Greek islands without the hassle of packing and unpacking. Otherwise, you’d have to deal with ferry rides between Greek islands, which can be quite cumbersome when managing luggage and coordinating hotel stays.

3. Europe Cruises (Non-Mediterranean)

Europe cruises, including Baltic and British Isle cruises, ranked as the third most popular cruise destination. In 2023, there were 3 million cruise passengers on non-Mediterranean European cruises, a 6.6% increase from 2019.

4. Asia and China Cruises

The Asia and China cruise destinations are ranked as the fourth most popular choice for cruises. In 2023, approximately 2.6 million passengers went on an Asia or China cruise. Although this is a 35.6% decrease from 2019, likely attributed to the impact of the pandemic.

5. Alaska Cruises

Alaska cruises came in as the fifth most popular cruise destination. In 2023, a staggering 1.7 million passengers went on an Alaska cruise, which is a substantial 35.8% increase from 2019.

The growing appeal of Alaska cruises is understandable, considering that Alaska’s road infrastructure is inadequate for a road trip and often requires seaplane travel between cities. Going on a cruise remains the most convenient and cost-effective way to explore Alaska.

6. California/Mexico Cruises

The Pacific Coast, California, and Mexico cruises emerged as the sixth most sought-after cruise destination. In 2023, the number of California/Mexico cruise passengers reached 1.4 million, a 24.1% increase from 2019. The appeal of being able to drive to a nearby cruise port for a vacation contributes to the attractiveness of cruising for many West Coast cruisers.

7. Australia/New Zealand/Pacific Cruises

Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific cruises were the seventh most popular cruise destinations. In 2023, there were 1.3 million cruise passengers, an 8.4% increase from 2019.

8. South America and Panama Canal Cruises

South America and Panama Canal cruises were the 8th most popular cruise destinations. In 2023, the number of passengers on these cruises reached 1.1 million, a 34% increase from 2019.

9. Africa and Middle East Cruises

Africa and Middle East cruises came in as the 9th most popular cruise destination. In 2023, there were 539,000 cruise passengers sailing the Africa and Middle East cruises. That’s a 4.6% increase from 2019.

10. Transatlantic Cruises

The least popular cruise destination turned out to be transatlantic cruises. In 2023, 367,900 passengers went on transatlantic cruises, which is a 3.1% increase from 2019. This is not surprising, considering that transatlantic cruises tend to be longer and usually take place during off-peak seasons, making them less accessible to many people. Virgin Voyages

This adults-only cruise line from Richard Branson — which also happens to be a Travel + Leisure World’s Best Award winner — offers excellent value. In fact, according to T+L A-list cruise advisor and Q Cruise + Travel founder and president Rob Clabbers, Virgin Voyages fares “include more than on most mainstream large-ship cruise lines.” For example, he says, “Virgin fares include internet access, gratuities, all meals — there are no cover charges for its restaurants that on most other lines would be considered specialty restaurants.” Beverages like soft drinks, coffee, and tea are also included, as are snacks, mezze at the aft terrace, and group workout classes. Best of all, there are no pricey beverage packages. “Instead,” says Clabbers, cruisers — or, as Virgin calls them, sailors — can buy their own reasonably priced drinks (think: beers from $6, $10 cocktails, and wines by the glass under $11) a la carte. Additionally, with some promotions , the cruise line throws in a “ bar tab ” credit that can be used towards drinks.

Princess Cruises

Another World’s Best Award winner — and WBA Hall of Fame Honoree, no less — this fan-favorite ocean line is renowned for refined ships, serene ambiance, and exceptional service. Moreover, per Clabbers, passengers can choose from “optional packages to help customize a passenger’s trip that provide savings over buying things separately.” For an extra $60 per day, consider Princess Plus, which offers perks like Wi-Fi for one device per guest, gratuities, fitness classes (two per sailing), and beverages like bottled water, specialty coffee, soft drinks, and juice. Alternatively, for $80 per day, passengers can spring on the Princess Premier package, which features the same beverages plus specialty dining (two per sailing), unlimited fitness classes, premium desserts, reserved theater seating, and Wi-Fi (four devices per guest).

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line is a favorite among families of all ages for its over-the-top entertainment and activities (think: go-karting, Broadway-caliber productions, and so on). “While Norwegian Cruise Line may price slightly higher than some of its competitors, you need to consider the Free at Sea package,” says travel advisor Jennifer Travis of Marvelous Mouse Travels . She goes on to describe the promotion as a “game-changer when it comes to cruising” since it includes perks like a “free open bar (up to $1,400 in savings), free specialty dining (up to $180 in savings), free Wi-Fi (up to $200 in savings), and a $50 discount on excursions.” Other Free at Sea perks include 70 percent off second guests, free third and fourth guests (on select dates), and free airfare (per the cruise line’s website: “ Pay airfare for one guest, and you'll automatically lock in roundtrip flights for two ”). Also, you can’t go wrong with the Free at Sea Plus package, which includes a wider selection of beverages, more specialty dining, unlimited Wi-Fi, and additional shore excursion credits. Before booking, be sure to check the line’s full selection of deals , which run the gamut from half-off deposits to $150 cruise credits and more.

Zip lines, water slides, surfing simulators, ice skating, rock climbing walls: Find all this and more aboard (most) Royal Caribbean ships — and, best of all, they’re complimentary! Ideal for fun- and adventure-loving travelers of all ages — read: kids and kids-at-heart alike — it’s pretty much impossible to be bored while cruising on this World’s Best Award-winning mega-ship line . Additionally, according to Travis, Royal Caribbean “offers some of the best short itineraries,” some of which clock in at under $200 per person for two-night sailings. Longer itineraries, including a seven-night Bahamas sailing aboard one of the line’s newest ships, Odyssey of the Seas , clock in at under $600 per person. The line also offers an abundance of deals , including up to $600 off sailings, 60 percent off second guests, and more.

Carnival Cruise Line

Courtesy of Carnival Cruises

“ Carnival Cruise Line is known for its competitive pricing without cutting back on the onboard activities or various dining options, thus making them an attractive option to budget-conscious cruisers,” explains Travis. For example, many itineraries, including a four-night Bahamas cruise from Miami , clock in at just over $150 per person. Additionally, says the travel advisor, “Carnival sails to a wide variety of destinations from so many local ports that you almost do not need to fly to your cruise ship anymore, which is another huge savings given the cost (and stress) flights can add to any vacation.” Keep an eye out for frequent flash sales for even more savings.

Booking early is an easy way to save on your next cruise vacation . “Typically,” says Travis, “the best pricing on a cruise is when the schedule is first released.” And, while you could wait for a last-minute deal, “you may not get the room category that you want.” Similarly, Clabbers says that flexibility is key when it comes to finding — and scoring — the best cruise deals . For example, he previously told T+L that if you are “very flexible and are looking for a standard room on a large ship on an itinerary that repeats week after week, you are more likely to find a promotional fare.”

Conversely, giving up some of that flexibility sometimes pays off. According to Clabbers, select cruise lines will offer lower fares to those who opt for a nonrefundable deposit instead of a refundable one. Finally, you may also consider cruising in shoulder season or even low season. Sure, the weather won’t be perfect, but the fewer crowds and cheaper fares more than make up for that, especially if you’re on a budget.

While your tab can quickly rack up once on board, there are several savvy ways to save money. For one, consider bringing your own booze. According to Travis, “Many cruise lines allow their guests to bring a specific amount of alcohol or nonalcoholic beverages onboard the ships, which can help save you money while you are on the ship.” Additionally, Michele Benard , another travel advisor at Marvelous Mouse Travels, advises packing your own necessities from home — like Advil, Tums,  motion sickness medicine, and after-sun lotion — as opposed to buying them on board at a much higher price. You’ll also want to skip the souvenirs at the onboard gift shop, which tend to be more expensive than those you’d find in port.

Benard also recommends taking advantage of “all the free activities on the cruise ships,” which can include everything from water slides to trivia game shows. Pro tip: “Stay onboard during a port day, and the lines won’t be as long.” On a similar note, spa treatments tend to be less expensive on port days, so those craving some R&R — that is, sans breaking the bank — may consider booking a service during this time.

Finally, says Clabbers, save money on your next cruise by enlisting the help of an onboard cruise consultant to select your next sailing. “You will typically receive an onboard credit or savings on your next cruise, and your own travel advisor will be alerted so they can help you plan your vacation.”

How much does Royal Caribbean Cruise Cost Per Person?

Planning your next trip to the Royal Caribbean and worried about the expenses? Here’s all you need to know!

Book Royal Caribbean Cruise

One of the most important things to think about while organizing a cruise trip is the cost. One of the most well-known cruise lines in the world, Royal Caribbean, provides a variety of itineraries, cabin styles, and onboard activities to suit a broad range of spending limits and tastes. This blog provides a detailed breakdown of all the expenses related to a Royal Caribbean cruise line , enabling you to plan each passenger's budget.

The total amount you will spend will begin with the base cruise charge. This cost covers the majority of the entertainment options, lodging, meals in the main dining area and buffet, and access to all onboard facilities, including swimming pools, kid's clubs, and fitness centers.

Royal Caribbean Cabin Types and Prices

Inside cabins: Depending on the route and season, they are usually the most affordable alternative, with rates ranging from $100 to $250 per person per night. For a seven-night trip to the Caribbean , this may add up to anywhere from $700 to $1,750 per person.

Oceanview cabins : These lodgings feature a window view and range in price from $120 to $300 per person per night. For a week-long excursion, the price goes up from $840 to $2,100 per person.

Balcony cabins : These lodgings are popular since they provide a private outdoor space. Prices normally range from $150 to $400 per person every night, or $1,050 to $2,800 total per person, for a seven-night trip.

Suites:  Suites provide a more sumptuous experience and range in price from $300 to over $1,000 per person per night. As a result, a week-long cruise in a suite may set you back $2,100 to $7,000 or more per person.

Additional Costs of Royal Caribbean Cruise

Even though the base price includes a portion of the trip, you should be mindful of the following additional costs:

  • Gratuities : On Royal Caribbean ships , gratuities are automatically added to your bill and now run about $16.50 for suite guests and $16 for those staying in basic cabins every day. This comes out to $112 per person for a 7-night cruise ($129.50 for those staying in suites).
  • Offers for drinks:  Royal Caribbean offers a variety of drink packages to improve your abroad experience.
  • Traditional soda plan:  This plan includes unlimited soda and ranges in price from $13 to $15 per person per day. This would come to about $91 to $105 per person for a 7-night cruise.
  • In addition to various non-alcoholic beverages, the refreshment package includes quality coffees, teas, bottled water, freshly squeezed juices, and mocktails. It costs between $29 and $38 per day, or $203 to $266 per person over a week.
  • Deluxe beverage package: This package, which ranges in price from $63 to $89 per person per day, comes with alcoholic beverages, Coke, and specialty coffees. For a seven-night trip, you should budget between $441 and $623 per person.
  • Gourmet cuisine:  Apart from specialty restaurants that require an additional fee, Royal Caribbean has significant eating options that are part of the package. Lunch should set you back between $20 to $50 per person, though this can vary. If you plan to eat at these establishments several times throughout your journey, your total cost may go up by $100 to $300 or more per person.
  • Beach visits:  Shore excursions give passengers the opportunity to visit ports of call, and prices vary widely. Simpler trips could only cost $50 per person. Still, more lavish experiences, including helicopter rides or private tours, can cost more than $200 per person. A seven-night cruise with three port days would cost $300 to $600 per person overall, as most cruisers believe that spending $100 to $200 per port day is reasonable.
  • Internet combinations:  While at sea, communication is still possible, albeit at a cost. Daily rates for Royal Caribbean's Voom internet service packages typically range from $12 to $20. For a seven-night trip, this adds out to a total of $84 to $140 per person.
  • Spa and fitness: Spa treatments and fitness sessions usually come with extra costs. Spa services like massages and facials can cost anywhere from $100 to $250 per session, while exercise classes like yoga or spinning might cost you $10 to $20 per class.
  • Entertainment and activities available on board: Some events, such as escape rooms, arcade games, and some onboard talks or wine tastings, are free of charge, but some have additional fees. The cost of an activity can vary substantially, ranging from $10 to $50 or more.

Pre and Post-Voyage charges

In addition to the costs you will incur on your cruise, you need to factor in pre and post-voyage charges:

  • Transportation to Port:  There will be a major increase in the cost of traveling to and from the port. The cost of a ticket varies greatly, but it can go up to $800 per person for domestic travel and considerably higher for international travel. It's also probable that you'll need transportation from the airport to the cruise terminal, which might cost anything from $20 to $50 per passenger for each trip.
  • Pre-Cruise Hotel: If you arrive a day early, you'll need to make arrangements for a hotel stay in order to ensure that you don't miss the ship. A night may cost anything from $100 to $300, depending on the hotel's quality and location.

The Best Way to Save Money on your Royal Caribbean cruise

To make the most of your budget, think about the following suggestions:

  • Pre-booking frequently results in cheaper rates and a better range of cabins.
  • Watch for promotions: Royal Caribbean cruise deals frequently offer discounts on drink packages, onboard credit, and free sailing for children.
  • Choose an off-peak time: You may be able to save a significant amount of money on your trip expenses by sailing during the off-season.
  • Limit specialty dining: Utilize the available meal selections and reserve specialty dining for a memorable occasion.
  • Plan your own shore excursions: Sometimes, it is less expensive to arrange directly with local providers than to use cruise line services.
  • Prepay gratuities: You can more effectively manage your budget by paying your gratuities in advance.
  • Use loyalty benefits: If you have previously taken a Royal Caribbean cruise, make use of the discounts and other benefits offered by the Crown & Anchor Society.

Between cultural exploration and total relaxation, the Caribbean is teeming with opportunities for history-lovers, adventure-seekers and laid-back travelers alike. Let our five best Caribbean destinations inspire your next cruise vacation.

Best Caribbean Destinations in the Eastern Region: St. Maarten

The Eastern Caribbean is the epitome of paradise. Crystalline waters and white-sand shores gleam against bright blue skies and promising sunshine. St. Maarten embodies the laid-back atmosphere and feel-good rhythm that so many hope to experience. Spend the day relaxing on Happy Bay — a coconut tree-lined beach known to be one of the best Caribbean destinations around. Or, board a catamaran and take off on a scenic coastal cruise. Revel in unobstructed views of the colorful shoreline, then explore below the surface and watch as schools of rainbow fish whirl past you.

Best Caribbean Destinations in the Western Region : Cozumel

Get a taste of tradition and culture when you travel to the best Caribbean cruise destinations in the West. While in Cozumel , explore Tulum’s ancient Mayan ruins in the morning, or attend a Mexican cultural show in the afternoon. Or learn about the region’s rich history through chocolate, using unique ingredients like chili and honey to bring the flavors to life. Get an even stronger taste for history in Roatan, Honduras, where the Garifuna tribe has laid claim to the land for over 200 years. Meet local tribe members, partake in a traditional dance and let the tempo of the music wash over you. With cultural sites on every corner, the Western Caribbean is your ticket to discovery.

Best Caribbean Destinations in the Southern Region: St. Lucia

Teeming with sea gardens, coral reefs and vibrant marine life, the Southern Caribbean is home to a world of underwater adventures. On your cruise vacation, visit St. Lucia , a destination with waters that are home to as many treasures as its sugar-bearing soil. Jump into the sea surrounding Pigeon Island, where sponge-like coral and fish await you. Float past groups of parrotfish, flounder, arrow crabs and octopus, which can grow several feet in length. Then dry off on land as you wander through the countryside brimming with banana plantations and tropical landscapes. Between the aquatic gardens and thriving cultures, St. Lucia is one of the best Caribbean cruise destinations in the South — especially for those interested in explorations both on and off shore.

Best Caribbean Destinations for Families: St. Maarten and Falmouth

Whether taking advantage of summer break or avoiding the winter snow, families can visit the top Caribbean cruise destinations all year long. Sail to St. Maarten and keep the kids entertained with outdoor adventures like kayaking, sailing and snorkeling. Or put your teamwork to the test as you go for gold together in a 12-meter America’s Cup yacht race. Known to be one of the safest Caribbean islands, you’ll feel welcomed to this friendly oasis the second you step off the ship. For families traveling with teens, head to Falmouth to spice things up. Taste local dishes like jerk chicken from Scotchie’s Jamaican Jerk and savory pasta from Evita’s Italian Restaurant. This “foodie” tour will do more than just satisfy your hunger — it will also fill you up with an appreciation for Jamaican heritage. From the thrilling East to the cultural West, our expert-crafted itineraries include the best Caribbean cruise routes for every family.

The Best Month to Go on a Caribbean Cruise

Seasons don’t exist on these tropical islands. Even the light rain that falls sporadically in certain months offers visitors a refreshing complement to days with abundant sunshine. This means that the best time to visit the Caribbean is during the month that is most convenient for you. Leave the fall breeze behind and revel in the sunshine. Bypass the winter storms while lying on sandy beaches. Embark on the ultimate spring break with a 7-day Caribbean cruise , or treat yourself to a summer trip worth writing home about. When you sail with Princess®, your quintessential vacation is at your fingertips every month of the year. View Caribbean cruises .
