Although mental health may not yet be normalized to the extent that physical wellbeing has, more people are willing to speak out about the impact of mental health. More specifically, there has been an increase in prominent individuals being willing to talk about their mental health struggles, which has helped keep the dialogue going.

It is important to do your best to find an outlet that allows you to be open and honest about your struggles, be it with a therapist, good friend, or family member.

Many individuals have also found an outlet by engaging in creative pursuits such as writing and painting to help express their emotions. Having an outlet to express your emotions can help maintain stable mental health and continue to motivate the conversation surrounding mental health and wellbeing.

Many of us can fall into the trap of thinking that if one doesn’t experience any symptoms of mental illness, then they should automatically display high wellbeing.

We may also think that fixing what is wrong will automatically lead to greater wellbeing. However, research suggests that it is far more complicated than that.

Keyes (2005) found that although higher subjective wellbeing correlates with fewer mental health symptoms and vice versa, this relationship is far from perfect.

In other words, some people who suffer from a disorder might still experience a relatively high level of subjective wellbeing, while some people who report low levels of subjective wellbeing might experience few symptoms or may even not suffer from a mental health disorder.

Ultimately, this model is crucial in providing a deeper understanding of mental health and wellbeing. The field of psychology is essential in understanding and assisting those with symptoms of psychopathology.

  • Contact-based education programs, which combine contact with educational content designed to raise public awareness of selected issues or increase public knowledge about mental and substance use disorders
  • Media campaigns delivered over a range of platforms, including traditional and newer social media
  • Peer programs in which people who have disclosed their conditions offer their experience and expertise to individuals and families, ranging from informal peer-led programs to peer-specialized services in health services systems

Introducing these programs can help increase awareness surrounding mental health. As people become more aware of the impacts, mental illness can slowly become more understood among the general population.

Stigma surrounding mental health includes being negatively perceived by others because of mental illness. Specifically, it can lead individuals to be discredited by society and experience barriers surrounding employment, access to care, and social support (Bharadwaj, Pai, & Suziedelyte, 2015).

1. “Bad things happen in our lives every day. Most of them are unavoidable. That’s life. Rather than burning yourself out working to avoid bad things from happening, teach yourself resilience – how you experience, process, accept, recover, and move on from bad things. The better you get at being resilient, the less time you spend being anxious and depressed about a bad situation or potentially bad situation. Not only this, resilience is inspiring. If your kids, spouse, parents, siblings, friends, etc., notice how quickly you bounce back from a bad situation, it will spread positivity.”

2. “My therapist and I were discussing how I felt about a pretty deep betrayal from my now ex-wife. I was beating myself up for not seeing how bad she really was when there was plenty of evidence. He wrote down something on his yellow notepad and then held it upright in my face, practically touching my nose.

He said, “What’s that say?”

I couldn’t read it; it was too close to my face. Stepping back from it a bit, it could read it said, “You’re too close to see it.” He was right. I was too close to the problems and the situation to have been able to see it, where, in retrospect, it was so obvious. I stopped beating myself up over it and was able to let it go.”

3. ““Anything worth doing is worth doing half-assed.”

Inaction is a form of paralysis. Do  something , even if it isn’t everything an adult human in perfect condition in ideal circumstances would do. I  should go to the gym 3x a week and get back into the shape I was in when I was a dancer. I don’t do that. I do take my dog on long walks, though, and that’s better than sitting on the couch all day!”

4. “Worrying about something that might happen just makes you miserable. It’s great to have a contingency plan, but don’t spend all your energy worrying about something that might never happen; just deal with it if it happens.”

5. “I’m not required to forgive anyone, especially from abuse. I can if I want to, and it works for me, but if I don’t feel forgiving, then I don’t have to.”

6. “Try to find something you enjoy every day, even if it’s something small like taking a hot shower or going for a walk. If you start feeling down, you can think about what you enjoyed from that day and recognize that you’ve done something nice for yourself.”

7. “I had issues getting motivated for pretty much anything, even my hobbies. She told me that even doing nothing is a conscious decision; it is not something that just happens; I made that choice, and I will need to decide it every day for the rest of my life.

It’s a rather simple thought, but it completely changed me. Basically gave me back control. I always ask myself stuff like, “Do I really want to sit on my couch and watch YouTube the whole Saturday?” And the answer is almost always “no,” so I go out and ride my bike or meet up with friends. It really helped me, just the simple task of questioning what you want to do with your time and making it a conscious decision.”

8. “If you don’t heal from what hurt you, you’ll bleed on people that didn’t cut you.”

9. “”You aren’t obligated to have a relationship with anyone.” Helped me realize that I could walk away from toxic relationships, romantic or otherwise.”

10. “My most recent therapist said, “Productivity does not equal worth or value.” In regards to people feeling like just because we’re home all the time during the pandemic, we should be doing stuff for and in the home (cleaning, hobbies, renovations, etc.). And then feeling badly that we don’t have the energy for those things. I’ve been reminding myself of her words every time I feel like I should be doing this or that. She says that relaxation is its own productivity.”

11. ““Your bad feelings are hard enough – don’t punish yourself on top of that for feeling bad.” Helped with self-harm and depression spirals.”

12. “I don’t owe the world anything, but the world doesn’t owe me anything either.”

13. “It’s not your job to manage other people’s emotions. It’s not your job to anticipate their every need before they vocalize it. Let people do their own thing; if they need help, they will ask, and if they don’t ask then that’s one less ask to stress about.”

14. “Would you say the things you say to yourself in your head to your best friend?

Would you tell your best friend that they are a pathetic loser that will never accomplish anything and nobody likes them, and they should just go ahead and off themselves to make everyone’s lives better?

15. “While my marriage was imploding, I was so hung up on figuring out why. Hours spent every night trying to fall asleep and instead of trudging over past arguments trying to get to a “fixable” cause.

My therapist simply stated, “You don’t need to figure it out. Just accept it.”

It was like a 10,000 lb. bolder was lifted from my shoulders.”

16. “A healthy relationship has boundaries that are respected. If this guy you are with loves you, he’ll respect that you aren’t ready, and he won’t complain about it. If he does, then he’s not a good partner.”

17. “You can’t forget, and you won’t forget. We can’t get rid of every emotion that hurts, like jealousy, anger, sadness. What’s important here is getting the skills to understand these things, feel them, and find happiness after.”

18. “If you have to eat a shit sandwich, you pick the toppings that come on it.” It was disheartening hearing at first, but it validated how I was feeling and gave me a good visual to see that even if things suck, there are things I can control to make it better.”

I’d been treating myself like something to fix and seeing every little problem as evidence that I was a failure and a terrible person. I learned to give myself the same benefit of the doubt as I’d give any other human I met on the street. Humans make mistakes, including me—that doesn’t mean there’s issues to fix; it means I’m a person.”

20. “You don’t want your life to be exciting. You want it to be boring. Excitement sounds like fun, but your mental health pays for it. So do exciting things. Be excited. But live a “boring” life, so you don’t careen from disaster to disaster.”

21. “Any emotion that you have, whether positive or negative, is just an extension of yourself.

For me, it was my anger. I would have moments where I was aware I was out of control but didn’t know how to stop it. So she told me to think of my anger as my literal hand. I control my hand. I have the autonomy to make my hand stop doing what I want it to do. My hand does not control me.

It was very effective in those moments where I would feel my anger taking over me to just quite literally look at my hand and remember I am in control.”

22. “I was freaking out about things that COULD happen, and he simply asked me, “So what would you do if that happened?” It sounds super simple, and it is, but it helped me realize I have solutions to problems that MIGHT arise. I shouldn’t let fear stop me from doing things that would be beneficial or enjoyable.”

Someone giving me permission to do nothing was pretty revolutionary for someone coming from a protestant hard work ethic upbringing that villainized relaxation as idleness/laziness. She was not just giving me permission; she was insisting on it as imperative to my health and well-being.”

25. “It’s okay to cry and don’t hold shit in.”

26. “I don’t remember the exact wording, but my psychiatrist told me years ago that bad things that happened in my life weren’t because I deserved them. The bad things happened to me because they were going to happen, and I just happened to be there. They could have happened to anyone else instead of me, but it wasn’t because God hated me that they happened.

For me, I struggled for years, thinking that everything that happened to me was my fault and just what I deserved. That if something good happened, it was an accident and would be reversed soon enough. He gave me the knowledge that sometimes, shitty things just happen.”

As part of my counseling practice, I often provide an after-visit summary to my pediatric and adolescent patients, reinforcing the lessons discussed during our sessions (Anbar et al., 2015). For example, when we discuss the importance of positive self-talk during a session, I give my patients a handout with an image of a sign stating , “Think Positive, Be Positive, and Positive Things Will Happen.”

Usually, I cut and paste quotes and images from Google or Bing onto the AVS that emphasize what we have talked about. Also, when the young person makes a good observation during our discussions, I will type it in bold 24-point font into the AVS. With younger children, I include images of their favorite superheroes or cartoon characters. As a result, without any suggestion on my part, many of the AVSs end up on the bedroom walls of my patients or even in binders that the children review over time. Thus, the AVSs can provide ongoing reinforcement of the suggestions given in therapy .

With school-age children, the AVS sometimes turns into a “Deal Sheet,” in which I describe terms of a deal that will help my patients achieve certain goals . For instance, “Each time that Johnny uses slow, deep breathing to calm himself successfully, he will earn a small prize from Dr. Anbar.” Examples of small prizes include mini candies, shark teeth, small toys, or collectible cards (such as those related to sports or Pokemon).

With preschoolers, the AVS often becomes a story that the children help create, including by telling me what elements they would like to include and choosing pictures they would like to paste into their story. Typically, such a story deals with a character who has a struggle like the one experienced by my patient who is helping to compose the story. Through discussions with the patient, we come up with a coping strategy for the struggle, which serves as a therapeutic metaphor for them.

Over the years, I have found that I have used certain inspirational quotes on multiple occasions as they are helpful to many of my patients. In this post, I share the quotes that I cite most frequently.

Being positive

I teach about the importance of a positive attitude and use positive words as a first lesson for most patients. The following quotes emphasize the importance of positivity. When I first introduce them to my patients orally, I repeat them two or three times so that the words can sink in.

  • “Whether you think you can, or think you can’t, you are right” – Henry Ford
  • “What we think, we become” – Buddha
  • “Leap and the net will appear” – John Burroughs

On facing challenges

Many conversations with my patients involve dealing with psychosocial and/or physical challenges. We discuss that while many things in life are outside of our control, we can be in control of how we react to our challenges.

  • “When one door closes, another door opens; But we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the one that has opened for us” – Alexander Graham Bell. I add to this the idea that sometimes what lies beyond the open door turns out to be even better than what we leave behind the closed door.
  • “Do or do not; There is no try” – Master Yoda. I usually follow up the presentation of this quote by explaining that when we try to do something, we leave room for failure. However, when we act, we usually achieve some measure of success. Further, when we talk about having tried something, it is usually in the context of having failed to achieve our goal. Thus, “try” is a word that implies failure and should be avoided.
  • “A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step” – Lao Tzu . I often use this quote to suggest a good approach to large projects or life journeys, which can seem overwhelming.
  • “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference” – Reinhold Niebuhr. This quote is very apropos for my patients who feel stuck when they persist in working to change something that is not in their control.
  • “I haven’t failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work” – Thomas Alva Edison . This is a good quote to give perfectionists who must learn to temper their expectations. I explain that people learn best through trial and error. Along the same veins, I provide this quote: “Your best teacher is your last mistake” – Ralph Nader
  • “Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional” – The Dalai Lama . This quote reinforces the idea that we can learn how to better cope with physical and mental discomforts.

For the anxious person

More than half of my patients suffer from anxiety as a primary issue or because of difficulties dealing with a physical or other mental health issue. I have found the following quotes to be especially helpful for these patients.

  • “Whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should” – Max Ehrmann . I explain that learning to accept and embrace the current situation is often the first step towards coping better.
  • “I’ve had many worries in my life, most of which never came true” – Mark Twain. This is a good quote to cite in a conversation with patients with irrational worries.
  • “Those who mind don’t matter; Those who matter don’t mind” – Dr. Seuss. People with social anxiety often worry about what others might think of them. I suggest that a person who is or can become a true friend is not judgmental. The opinion of unhelpful people should be given little weight.
  • “Do the best you can until you know better. Then do better” – Maya Angelou. To the patients worried they are not good enough, I offer the idea that they can take solace in doing their best until they know better.

Life guidance

  • “Life is a journey, not a destination” – Ralph Waldo Emerson. This quote is helpful for patients who are greatly concerned about their ability to reach a particular life goal. I explain that they should appreciate the nature and impact of the work they put into achieving the goal, and thus attainment of the goal is not the only way to achieve success.
  • “The happiest people don’t have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything” – Anonymous . This quote ties in with the importance of a positive attitude, e.g., looking at a cup as half full rather than half empty.
  • Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible” – The Dalai Lama. This quote speaks for itself, as does another sentiment by The Dalai Lama, “If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.”

Giving patients a personalized AVS can help improve their mental health care by allowing them to review what they learned about in therapy over time. Using quotes and images on the AVS allows the lessons to become more memorable and makes it more likely that the AVS will be kept around for the long term. The AVS appears to become even more meaningful and impactful when it contains ideas developed by the patients.

Ever since I was a little girl I’ve loved collecting quotes.  Anytime I’d find a word, phrase, poem, or passage that connected with me, I kept it.  When I found quotes I loved I’d copy them into a journal or notebook, rip out the page from the magazine, buy the book, memorize it – anything to save the special energy the quote gave me anytime I read it.  

I filled journals, boxes, and drawers with all the quotes I collected over the years.  The quotes were about life, love, and even as a kid-they were often holistic health quotes!  They didn’t just sit and gather dust once I collected them either.  I spent time regularly in reflection re-reading them and allowing myself to receive any new downloads they brought through for me.  

I still collect quotes, especially holistic health quotes, to this day.  Being an intuitive and empath allows me the special gift of being able to connect to things with my energy.  When I read a holistic health quote that resonates with me, I know that a deeper message and lesson is coming through it.   As I revisit or rediscover the quotes over time each experience brings me a new reflection, a new message, a new lesson to learn.

Words are powerful and each carries its own unique energetic frequency and vibration.  Ever since I was young, I’ve been able to feel the energy of everything around me including words.  

I was taught by one of my mentors that each word, along with its energy, can never be taken back once its written or spoken.  It puts a permanent energetic imprint out in the Universe, and a powerful one.  

Believe it or not, the energy our words carry can travel anywhere and impact anything or anyone.  It’s really basic science.  The first law of thermodynamics, or the Law of Conservation of Energy, teaches us that energy can’t be created or destroyed.  Once words are created, they can’t be taken back- that energy can’t be destroyed.   

This is one of the reasons it truly is so important to choose your words wisely.  You never know the impact they can have, especially collectively.  Since the energy that words create can’t be destroyed, then imagine the potential consequences of millions of people speaking negatively over years and years.  The energy of those words accumulates.  It builds up into a massive negative energetic thought form and can impact groups, countries, or the entire world’s population in unimaginable ways.  

This has everything to do with our health and wellness, speaking of holistic health quotes!  But sincerely, please, consider this the next time you are about to react negatively.  Remember the words you choose will carry energy intentionally out into the Universe.  What kind of impact do you want to have on others?  Negative or Positive?

Once a physical therapy assistant at a corrections facility, Morgan Boyd aims to use her new DPT degree to treat underserved communities.

FOR MORGAN BOYD DPT ’24 , the journey from her hometown of Chesapeake, Va., to USC is marked by diverse experiences.

A graduate of Norfolk State University , just 10 miles north of her hometown, the four-year scholarship recipient’s prowess on the softball field and dedication to her academic achievements were just the beginning.

After her undergraduate studies, Boyd worked as a physical therapy tech while she completed an accelerated physical therapy assistant degree from South University in 2016. With a new degree under her belt, she started looking for jobs to gain even more exposure to the profession and patient care.

“I wanted to do something that was going to be unique and interesting to me, but make a difference,” Boyd says.

Treating Inmates

When she stumbled on a role on the Internet within the Virginia Department of Corrections looking for a physical therapy assistant, she decided to double-click.

“I hadn’t seen any PT-related jobs like it before. I learned the role was a part of a new medical team providing services to inmates in correctional facilities without having to take them out. I was like, ‘Heck yeah, I’m going to do that!”

As Boyd’s excitement soared upon landing the position, her family’s response was tinged with apprehension and concern for her safety.

“They wanted me to look for another job, but I’m a risk-taker anyway, they know that,” Boyd says, with a laugh. “I wasn’t scared, other than the usual ‘first day on the job’ nerves.”

Her roles as a physical therapy assistant and later as a site supervisor within the Virginia Department of Corrections were just what she was looking for — unique and impactful. Working with male inmates across various security levels, Boyd encountered diverse cases, from orthopedic injuries to neurological conditions.

“I’d see inmates who tore their ACL working out or people getting total hip replacements, and then there were people who are aging and going to be in there for life,” Boyd recounts. “So I got to see a lot, but you had to handle it a little differently than you would in a traditional setting because things move slower in there.”

Boyd described the other challenges, like staffing and funding, she witnessed within the correctional system.

“I treated an inmate who had multiple sclerosis whose symptoms progressed very quickly,” Boyd recalls. “Due to his heat sensitivity and the older buildings having poor air conditioning, there was limited ability to get his area cool contributing further to the progression.”

Working in the prison system not only exposed her to unique challenges but also instilled in her a deep sense of empathy and a commitment to holistic patient care.

“While it’s true that some inmates are there for good reason, you still have to treat them with respect and professionalism,” Boyd says. “I learned the value of treating the whole person that’s in front of you without bias, allowing them to feel heard.”

Open Road Ahead

Transitioning from her role in the prison system to pursuing a DPT degree program at USC was a significant change that Boyd embraced with high regard.

“You hear about the USC Trojans everywhere, but for me, it was the reputation for groundbreaking research and the physical therapy education specifically that drew me in.”

Reflecting on her time at USC, Boyd credits faculty members Noriko Yamaguchi DPT ’08 and Didi Matthews ’99, DPT ’02 for their mentorship and challenging her to deepen her skillsets.

“As students, we were pushed to really hone in on the minor details so that it becomes second nature and we don’t become complacent when we step into the profession on our own.”

While Boyd’s future may not lead her back to the prison system immediately, she remains open to opportunities where she can make a meaningful impact.

“My next chapter will focus more on underserved communities outside the system, but I’m not against jumping back in if the right challenge comes along!”

First Black woman NFL coach shares journey through sports

When Jennifer King first attended the National Football League’s Women’s Forum in 2018, every one of the more than 40 women in attendance held jobs outside the sport. When King returned this year – every woman she met already worked in football.

“It just shows the tremendous growth that women have had in this sport,” said King, the featured speaker at “Breaking Barriers: The First Black Woman to Coach in the NFL,” an event held May 3 in Newman Arena.

“That’s something that the other women coaches in the league and I take very seriously,” she said, “just to be great [role] models and be the representation that we didn’t have for the people coming behind us.”

During an hourlong conversation moderated by student-athlete Sydney Moore ’24, King reflected on her journey through college and professional sports, and touched on topics ranging from the importance of diversity and representation to the growing opportunities for women in athletics.

A former student-athlete at Guilford College, King spent 13 years playing in the Women’s Football Alliance (WFA), a semi-pro, full-contact women’s league. She began her coaching career in college basketball and often worked other jobs to supplement her income, even serving as a police officer in her native North Carolina.

King eventually climbed the coaching ranks and in 2018 led Johnson & Wales University, Charlotte, to a 22-4 record and its first United States Collegiate Athletic Association Division II championship. Despite the success, King left college basketball the following year to pursue her dream of working in football.

“It’s so important for you to find something that you love,” King said. “Don’t be afraid to better yourself and don’t be afraid to make that leap into the unknown. When you get opportunities in life, you have to take them.”

Today, King is one of only 12 women to hold full-time coaching positions in the NFL. She broke into the sport as an assistant coach at Dartmouth College, and with the Arizona Hotshots of the now-defunct Alliance of American Football. After two years as a coaching intern with the NFL’s Carolina Panthers, King accompanied then-head coach Ron Rivera, whom she met at the 2018 NFL Women’s Forum, to the Washington Commanders.

In 2021, King was promoted from coaching intern to the role of assistant running backs coach in Washington and became the first Black woman to be named to a full-time NFL coaching staff. Recently, King accepted an assistant coaching position with the Chicago Bears, becoming the first female coach in the franchise’s 104-year history.

“I’ve gotten to this point by being myself every day,” said King, who credited coaches and players she met along the way for making her feel welcome. “I think it’s so important for people to find places where they can have the confidence to know you don’t have to show up as someone else.”

While answering a question from the audience, King recalled her first day with the Panthers. Both a fan of the team and a new staff member, she nervously stood against a wall as Luke Kuechly, the team’s star linebacker, approached and introduced himself. While King appreciated the gesture, he needed no introduction – considering she had his jersey at home.

“That set the tone for everything,” King said. “I think we’re entering a new era in sport, where for a lot of these guys now in control, it’s not new for them to have women in these positions anymore. We have a lot of work to do, but I haven’t experienced a lot of the [negative] things you probably think I would have because people are so much better and we’re moving into a new generation.”

A strong advocate for continuing to grow opportunities for women in athletics, King remains involved with the NFL’s Women’s Forum, Women’s Sports Foundation, and her own organization, the King Group, dedicated to enriching the lives of kids through camps, experiences and community programs.

King also discussed the increased interest in women’s sports and the important lessons she and other women can gain from participating in athletics.

“All the things that can happen as a leader, you’ve already experienced,” King said. “You’ve been knocked down and life has happened to you as an athlete, and as you move into leadership roles, you know you’re battle-tested and can lead companies and organizations.”

Charles Kelley of Lady A opens up about his journey to sobriety: "I can't really say I'm sorry enough"

Lady A, the chart-topping country music trio, has been making music together for 17 years. However, in August of last year, the group postponed their tour to allow bandmate Charles Kelley to seek treatment for alcohol abuse. 

Kelley, who has won seven Grammys with Lady A, revealed exclusively to "CBS Mornings" that behind the scenes, his relationship with alcohol was taking a turn for the worse. 

"I remember joking, you know, with buddies," Kelley said. "I was like, 'Yeah, I'm definitely a functioning alcoholic.' And I said, 'I know I'm gonna have to stop at some point, but that's not today.'"

"And that was always kind of my little joke. It was, like, that tells you I kinda knew," Kelley said. 

Kelley said his bandmates, Hillary Scott and Dave Haywood, were also aware of the problem, and first addressed it five years ago. 

"It was the first time that they had really, you know," Kelley said. "We would have shows where they're like, 'Hey man, you might have had a little too much to drink that night.' I was like, 'Okay, well, has it affected how hard I work? Has it affected the shows?'"  

He recalls being dismissive to their concerns and quick with his words, leading to emotional and verbal outbursts. Although he did not engage in physical altercations, he recognized that his behavior was influenced by alcohol. 

Kelley also revealed how his drinking affected their seven-year-old son, Ward. 

"Cassie [Charles' wife] would tell me some stories about how little things that Ward would say that I didn't even know he was noticing. You know, 'Daddy's talking a little funny,' or, 'You and Daddy argue a lot,'" he said. 

Kelley said that hearing that his son noticed his drinking "crushed" him, because his son is the most important thing in his life. 

He told "CBS Mornings" he had tried to quit before, but had never tried going to rehab because he was scared, and associated rehab to those who have a serious problem with alcohol — not realizing that there are different ways that alcohol can impact people's lives. 

"What I've learned is, there's degrees of alcoholics," Kelley said. "You know, I think that's one of the things too that I want to even share is, like, just because you're not living on the street, or you're not waking up in a bush, like some stories you may hear, it can get there." 

However, this time Kelley decided to give rehab a chance for a month, and it worked for him. He credits a number of different tools in his success including attending "a lot of group meetings with other alcoholics," and having a case manager, as well as a device he blows into every morning and every night. 

He said this work is not just for his own wellbeing, but also for his wife, his band, and everyone else to know that he is checking alcohol.  

"Slowly, but surely, that has built the trust back that eventually I think that won't be a necessity," Kelley said. 

Kelley's wife Cassie said that the experience was difficult but ultimately worth, because the journey, as she learned, is just as much hers as it is his.  

She was surprised to learn about the amount of work she had to do when Kelley was in rehab. Initially, Cassie was upset and thought, "'You [Charles] did this. And now I have to do all of this work, too.'" 

However, she said she later realized that alcoholism is a family disease that affects everyone in the family system. She explained that she could have chosen not to do the work, but would have had to live with the unhealed trauma. 

Their marriage, and Kelley's drinking, came to a head during a trip to Greece. Kelley said he got into an argument with Cassie and turned off his phone, disappearing for the night and drinking with strangers. When he returned the next morning, Cassie told him he needed help and was planning to meet with a divorce attorney. The incident was a turning point for Kelley, who realized he needed to deal with his alcoholism. He flew directly to treatment, crediting his wife for pushing him to seek help.  

"It just makes me feel so grateful at how close I came to losin' it all," Kelley said. "And I think the thing that's hard is to know how much it affected Cassie the most, and my band, and the people around me. And how much it emotionally kinda wrecked them for a while. And that, I can't really say I'm sorry enough. And it's just gonna take time to rebuild that."  

Kelley's road to recovery includes therapy sessions with his group. Lady A launched their latest tour at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville last month, featuring Kelley's original song "As Far As You Could," which he refers to as his goodbye letter to alcohol. 

Kelley said he is now sober and healthy, grateful for the support he's received from his bandmates, family and fans.  

"I feel a lot of love," Kelley said.

In the midst of a kidney disease battle, Tajze Johnson '24 will earn his doctorate in Occupational Therapy from Methodist University this weekend.

August 11, 2020 was a day Tajze Johnson ’24 will never forget.

He answered a phone call from his doctor who told him significant news: Johnson had kidney disease and needed to complete dialysis immediately.

“That day changed my life,” Johnson said. “But I’m able to mask all of the trouble by coming to class, fulfilling my future, and helping others.”

Fast forward nearly four years later, Johnson is still battling kidney disease, but he will also have the distinct honor of being called “Dr. Johnson” as he earns his doctorate in Occupational Therapy from Methodist University this weekend.

Journey to Occupational Therapy

Johnson grew up in Rochester, N.Y., where he learned about occupational therapy at a fairly young age. His mother, Makeba, who worked as a nursing manager at a nursing home, introduced him to physical therapy and later occupational therapy.

“From that point, it was all about occupational therapy,” he added. “All I wanted to do was figure out my path to getting there, and it was an interesting journey to say the least.”

Johnson completed an associate degree at Finger Lakes Community College and then a bachelor’s degree at Belmont Abbey College, all while working full-time as a general manager at an automotive retailer. He then finished a master’s degree in Healthcare Administration at Purdue Global while becoming a certified occupational therapy assistant through Eastern Virginia Career College.

But Johnson knew he wanted to learn more if he wanted to accomplish his dreams of becoming an occupational therapist, so his attention turned to Methodist University’s doctoral program.

“I was doing research and found out Methodist University’s Occupational Therapy program was the first accredited program of its kind in North Carolina. I wanted to be there,” he said.

It was around that time that Johnson found out about his kidney disease, making the task of applying to graduate schools even more challenging. But according to Johnson, MU’s faculty and staff made the decision easy for him to attend the University.

“During my interview with Dr. Meredith Gronski (Dean, College of Health Sciences & Human Services ; Director & Associate Professor of Occupational Therapy), she applauded my brilliance and resiliency to attend graduate school,” Johnson said. “Then, the first time I saw her in person, she took the first opportunity to get to know me and let me know that they were here for me.”

Excelling at MU

Johnson started Methodist University’s Doctor of Occupational Therapy in 2021, quickly developing his skills and knowledge in various areas, especially leadership, pediatrics, rehabilitation, intensive care, management, policy and procedures, and research.

In April, Johnson, along with classmates Christopher Harper ’24 and Raymond McCall Jr. ’24, even recently shared their research with the entire campus during Methodist University’s CRC Symposium Day poster sessions – explaining the general protocol for implementing switch-adapting and 3-D printed devices for people facing environmental barriers due to upper extremity motor impairments.

Gronski said it is one of the many examples of Johnson’s academic and personal excellence.

“Throughout his time in the program, Johnson consistently pushed MU, the Occupational Therapy faculty, and his classmates to be better,” Gronski said. “He is a true leader as he actively pursued and embraced any professional opportunity that came his way.”

While at MU, Johnson has served in the National Occupational Therapy Assembly of Student Delegates and was even selected for a national student research mentorship program.

Johnson’s leadership outside of the classroom stands out, as well. He started the first graduate chapter of the Black Student Union at Methodist University in 2022, helping host various events while creating a dedicated space for Black graduate students to gather and build community.

“One of the biggest things that my mother raised me to do was to always think of how to help others,” Johnson said. “It’s been one of my biggest missions to seek out other young men of color and tell them about occupational therapy. To see other people who look like me push the field forward is a beautiful thing.”

He also points to various Methodist University faculty, staff, and students for making an impact on his life over the last several years including Gronski, Harper, McCall, Sharon Jenkins (Office Manager of Occupational Therapy), Dr. Quincy Malloy (Chief Diversity Officer), and Gavin Myrick (Director, Student Belonging & Inclusion).

Perseverance Through Trials

One of the most difficult times during Johnson’s tenure came a few months ago. On December 26, 2023, as he

continued to battle through his kidney disease, Johnson received a phone call saying he might be able to receive a transplant.

A kidney transplant would take Johnson out of the classroom for an extended period of time so he immediately informed Gronski, who quickly developed a plan to make sure Johnson could continue to complete the program on time.

“I didn’t get the transplant, but it was the first sign that it’s around the corner,” Johnson said. “But to know that the faculty had my back during that tough time meant the world to me.”

Johnson’s personal health battle has sparked an interest in helping others going through similar situations. He, with the help of his fiancé Brittany, recently developed his own foundation to spread knowledge and information regarding kidney disease – an area they hope to work together in down the line.

The Next Chapter

As Johnson is set to walk the stage during Methodist University’s graduate commencement on Saturday evening, he looks forward to being hooded by his fiancé, who has offered continued support along with Johnson’s mother, father, brother, and stepfather.

“It’s exciting. Just like when I proposed to my fiancé, it will represent the start of a new chapter and a new beginning for us,” he said.

Following graduation, Johnson plans to implement a 14-week pilot program for occupational therapy’s role in organ transplants at Wake Forest Atrium. Long term, Johnson hopes to continue research in the organ transplant area while creating protocols for hospitals throughout North Carolina. He even has eyes on opening his own practice one day, a dream that would not be possible without Methodist University.

“Methodist University has changed my life for the better,” said Johnson. “It has given me opportunity. It took a chance on me when I was going through a chronic illness and believed in me. I’ll always be grateful for my time here.”

Methodist University’s Doctor of Occupational Therapy program was the first fully-accredited, entry-level doctoral program in occupational therapy in North Carolina and now offers a bachelor’s-level program training occupational therapy assistants.
