Cherry blossoms, tea ceremonies, calligraphy and poetry mingle to create an unrivalled experience on your Japan tour. Despite its comparatively tiny size, there’s so much to discover in East Asia’s cultural gem. Japan tour packages offer a variety of experiences for travellers who want to delve into the country's culture and traditions. If you're looking for a fully organised Japan trip, the Japan tour packages from Thomas Cook might be the way to go. Japan is a study of dichotomy and cultural coexistence between traditional belief systems and values and an ultramodern way of life. Days are marked by quiet disciplined dedication to work that is the hallmark of life in Japan and evenings bring out the raw, energetic playful side of Japan awash in a sea of neon and sake. Like the Taoist principle of ‘Yin’ and ‘Yang’, prevalent in China, Japanese culture has ‘In’ and ‘Yo’, a belief in opposing cosmic forces coexisting in perfect harmony.  If you want an example of a country that works extra hard, and plays even harder, look no further than Japan. This is primarily why Japan is seen as a benchmark for a modern culture that many others aspire to. Organised chaos is the name of the game in Japan. To the casual observer on a Japanese holiday, Japan may appear hectic, crowded and unorganised even, but this is far from the truth. Japan is like a giant jigsaw puzzle where thousands of pieces fit perfectly without any dissonance. Japan tourism is one of these pieces and it manages to fit right in among the many other facets, making a visit to Japan feel alien and homely at the same time. The birthplace of Sushi, the playground of technology, the land from which sleek skyscrapers rise and Anime characters come to life, wouldn’t you like to experience this all? Japan tours are designed to allow you to experience the best of this dichotomy, whether you're interested in visiting ancient temples and experiencing traditional tea ceremonies, or exploring the bright lights and cutting-edge technology of Tokyo . Mountains, volcanoes, forests and sand dunes, let Japan’s natural marvels pull you further and further in on your Japanese holiday with a variety of Japan tour packages from Thomas Cook!

Whether you make a trip in summer, spring or winter, you will be in for a major surprise. So, the best time to visit Japan will depend on what you’d like to see. Spring is known for its iconic cherry blossoms and pleasant days spent ambling around the cities or cycling around rural Japan. Winter, on the other hand, is a snowy wonderland where you can soak in one of Japan’s many geothermal hot springs or spend time in a traditional bathhouse with its wooden hot tubs. You can easily find Japan tour packages scheduled for any of these seasons on our website. Though their names have the same letters, Tokyo and Kyoto are the opposites of each other. Here you will find Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, minimal Zen gardens, imperial palaces and traditional Japanese wooden houses. Kyoto in Japan is also the setting for the film Memoirs of a Geisha and taking a tour of the filming locations will invariably take you to some of Kyoto’s most famous landmarks such as the Fushimi Inari Shrine and Kiyomizu temple. This is a land of lakes and parks. Visit Daisetsuzan National Park with its geothermal hot springs and steaming, volcanic mount Asahi, from where the famous Japanese beer Asahi gets its name. There’s also Shikotsu-Toya National Park with its lakes formed from volcanic caldera and Mount Yotei, Mount Fuji’s twin peak. The ski towns of Rusutsu, Niseko and Furano are an Asian Alpine paradise where you can ski, snowboard or make snow angels. Experience your dream vacation with affordable Japan packages available on our page.

You may remember Mt. Fuji in Japan from the Godzilla movies, or any other film set in Japan for that matter. Mt. Fuji features prominently in any mention of Japan and occupies a place of pride in the Japanese mind who lovingly call it ‘Fuji-san’ as they would a friend or acquaintance. It is one of the three most sacred mountains in Japan and has been a pilgrimage site since the 3rd century. Hiking to the summit of this active volcano is one of the most popular activities you can undertake, passing through forests, past Sinto and Buddhist shrines and an ethereal beauty with a subtle muted colour palette featuring nature and the elements that is the hallmark of Japan. Consider looking for Japan tour packages from India that feature a day trip to Mt. Fuji.

Hiroshima has entered the history books for all the wrong reasons. It was the site of one of the worst acts of war during World War 2. It has since bounced back and now stands as a proud reminder of the resilience of the Japanese people. Hiroshima in Japan is now a modern city and a centre of trade and commerce with its own unique microculture and nightlife. A must visit on your Japan tour while you’re in Hiroshima is the A-Bomb dome, the only structure left standing after the city was destroyed and the Peace Memorial Park where the Flame of Peace, a fire that burns and will continue to burn until global nuclear disarmament is achieved, can be found. You can effortlessly find Hiroshima in the trip itinerary of many Japan tour packages from India.

Ishigaki is the most popular island in the Yaeyama Islands in Japan’s Okinawa prefecture. Yakushima is an island in the Kagoshima Prefecture of Japan. It is famous for its cedar forests which contain some of Japan’s oldest trees. A winter sports hub, Hakuba is dotted with mountain resorts and mountainous terrain perfect for skiing, snowboarding and hiking. The Hakuba Ski Jumping Stadium, built for the 1998 games, at the base of the Happo-one resort is where you can watch daredevil skiers speed down the slopes before leaping off the ramp at the end. Cuisine in Japan

Inspired by exotic regional produce and fresh seasonal ingredients, Japan creates gastronomical delights that continue to take the world by the storm. Some of its best and most traditional dishes include sushi (raw fish in fermented rice rolls), sashimi (thinly sliced raw fish), tempura (battered seafood/vegetables), yakitori (chicken skewers), tsukemono (pickles), udon (noodles) and sukiyaki (beef). Historically influenced by the Chinese, today Japanese cuisine has opened itself up to the influences of western cuisines. So, even when browsing through available Japan travel packages that include meals, make sure to do your own research on the local cuisine to get the best out of your trip.

Take a ramen tour of Japan

Ramen, known worldwide as an instant convenience food, is an artform in Japan. Witch types and styles of ramen that vary from prefecture to prefecture, taking a ramen tour of Japan makes perfect sense for the gastronomically inclined. Slurp ramen with miso, corn and plump scallops from Hokkaido, or try the shoyu ramen in Tokyo, with its light flavourful broth. Purists can try the tonkatsu ramen at Yokohama’s Chinatown, where this hearty dish was born on their Japan tour.

Train like a sumo wrestler

Tokyo’s Tomioka Hachiman Shrine is the birthplace of sumo wrestling. Your Japan tour must include a pitstop at this temple to check out the temple and the neighbouring Ryogoku district where you will find dohyo’s or dojo’s or schools where sumo wrestlers live and train. Watch these gentle giants in action as they push, pull and throw each other around. Some dojos will allow you to partake in the action with a one-day sumo training course after which you can sit down to a hearty meal of Chankonabe, a specialty soup eaten by sumo wrestlers.

Climb Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji, affectionately called Fujisan by the Japanese is an active volcano and Japan’s most iconic geographical landmark. It lies to the south west of Japan’s capital- Tokyo. One of the adventurous things to do in Japan is to climb the popular Mount Fuji in the months of July and August. Visitors can even enjoy the breath-taking views from either of these places- the Shin-Fuji station, from the top of the Chureito pagoda or any of the five lakes that surround the mountain. Experience Mount Fuji and various other Japanese wonders with the Japan travel packages by Thomas Cook.

Cheer Yourself Up with Japanese Cherry Blossoms 2024

The Cherry Blossom festival is Japan tourism’s biggest draw. People flock to gardens all over Japan to enjoy an evening of food, drinks, and music under the newly blossomed cherry trees and celebrate the view of the delicate pink sakura and ume flowers. The blooming period lasts two weeks on average. And the flowers remain in full bloom for a few days. That's why you must plan carefully if you want to catch the beauty of the cherry blossom season in Japan.

The blossoms start from north to south. That means the Kanto and Kansai regions will be the earliest to witness the flowers. And the Tohoku region would witness it latest.

They call their celebrations Hanami. It means flower viewing. Families gather outdoors and have picnics and parties while admiring the flowers.

Want to take part in Hanami? It's easy.

  • Look for the perfect spot to enjoy the beauty of cherry blossoms.
  • Now, get your food and drinks ready.

You can ask a friendly Japanese policeman for a ride and they will ensure you are dropped off home safe and sound, a unique experience on your Japan tour for sure.

Visit the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum

Japan is the only country in the history of the world to have been attacked with an atomic weapon. The tragic day of August 9, 1945 is still remembered all over the world. To honour those who lost their lives in the incident and the efforts of the Japanese Government to spread awareness about the repercussions of the weapon used in the regions of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, led to the establishment of the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum. Visiting this museum on your Japan trip is a sobering reminder of the horrors of war.

Indian nationals planning their foreign trip to Japan should know that they are required to have a Japan visa in order to gain entry into the country. To do so offline, individuals will need to apply for it at the Japanese embassy or consulate in India (Mumbai, New Delhi and Kolkata). On the other hand, they can also apply for a Japan visa online. Some Japan tour packages include visas as a part of the package. The validity period of a Japan tourist visa is up to three months after its issuance. This type of visa is a single-entry visa that allows a stay of up to 90 days. Individuals are required to submit all the necessary documents and pay the visa fees when applying for this visa. Even though Indian tourists will need to get a tourist visa prior to their arrival in Japan, it is suggested not to apply for it earlier than 45 days from the planned date of travel. In general, the essential documents that Indian citizens are required to produce when applying for a Japan tourist visa include a valid passport, fully filled and signed visa application form, an original passport, accommodation proof, flight ticket details, a couple of recent photographs, financial statements, etc.

For your visa-related requirements, consider checking out the online visa services offered by Thomas Cook. To book your Japan tourist visa online, just head over to the online visa page, enter the necessary details (such as destination country, visa type, preferred branch, etc.), provide your contact information and submit it to get a quote. After that, provide the additional details, pay online, submit the necessary documents online or at a nearby offline branch and receive your visa in just a few days.

Food to Eat in Japan: Local Dishes to Try

A trip to Japan is incomplete without trying out at least a handful of the most popular local dishes. Here are some of the best local dishes in Japan that you must try;

Sushi is among the most famous Japanese dishes and needs no new introduction. It is a type of dish made using vinegar sushi rice, and a number of other ingredients, especially raw fish and other seafood. Served in small finger-sized bites, sushi both looks and tastes great and is available all across the country. The best way to eat sushi is by dipping it in wasabi mixed soy sauce. The most common types of Sushi you can try in Japan include kabura sushi, inari sushi, maki sushi and nigiri sushi.

Ramen is yet another widely popular local dish you must try during your Japan trip. It is basically a type of noodle soup that contains four main components, wheat noodles, broth, kaeshi or tare (seasoning) and various toppings. The four main types of ramen are shoyu, shio, miso and tonkotsu. It is a very delicious local Japanese food enjoyed by both locals and tourists and is available across thousands of eateries and restaurants in the country. So, when looking for Japan travel packages, research the best places to grab this dish during your visit.

Miso soup is a well-known local dish you can try after finishing a hearty Japanese meal. This dish is not just extremely delicious but is also quite nutritious. A traditional miso soup in Japan is made using miso paste, dashi and other ingredients, including fish, deep-fried tofu, vegetables, etc. Some people even prefer miso soup over any kind of dessert after concluding their meal.

Alongside Ramen, Udon is a well-known local noodle dish you can try during your Japan tour. It is a thick and chewy traditional Japanese wheat noodle dish that is topped using ingredients like fish cakes (Kamaboko), tempura, abura-age, chopped scallions, etc. Unlike Ramen, Udon is more favoured for its noodles and not broth. During your Japan tour, make sure to try a distinct style of Udon from Nagoya called Kishimen.

During your Japan tour, make sure to try Sukiyaki in a social dining setting to get a clearer picture of Japanese cuisine, culture and tradition. Sukiyaki is a local hot pot dish containing a variety of thinly sliced vegetables, raw beef, noodles, etc., cooked together in a small pot with boiling broth, usually at the centre of the table. It is a hearty, mouthwatering dish you simply can’t miss out on.

I have not been on Thomas Cook but thinking they run about the same. October will be cool but not extreme by your standards. Since you are with a tour group, casual dress is acceptable even for dinner. Much sightseeing involves walking so bring the best walking shoes. I would not eat in the hotels if possible to keep the cost of your trip down. Some of your best food and experiences will be outside the hotel.

All tours have set lunch locations and the ryokan will have an in-room furo, better than a shower.

thomas cook tours to japan

The Japanese shower almost continuously and it is considered seriously bad manners to get into a bath without showering thoroughly first.

The Samurai were expected to commit ritual suicide if they did anything to offend the social mores of the day but you probably won't be asked to do that!

My family and I went on this tour last November (2008) and, despite not being seasoned travellers, can thoroughly recommend the experience. Hotel breakfasts (in exchange for supplied vouchers) are provided throughout, although on the last day, a bento box is provided on the way to Kansai Airport as the departure time is way too early for the hotel to serve breakfasts! At other times, including stops en route, you are left to your own devices concerning meals - plenty of places to cater for all tastes outside hotels, and usually at affordable prices. Note, though, that the hotel in Hakone is quite a distance from the main resort, so evening meals at the hotel are advisable. Dress code is not too important; smart/casual is perfectly acceptable. Japanese food is healthy, but you'll usually be able to find burger joints and KFC's if that's your thing!

Can't tell you about the ryokan - we like our creature comforts!

As with most guided tours, there were places we would have liked to spend a little more time, some, maybe, a little less.

Two tour guides are provided throughout; one for Tokyo & Hakone, another for Kyoto , Hiroshima and Osaka . Our second guide (Toshi) was of the 'old guard', very thorough and very knowledgeable. At times, we felt as if we were on a school visit, but this made the tour no less enjoyable. If I had the cash, I'd do the same tour again at the drop of a hat.

Above all, enjoy yourselves and soak in the culture. Watch out for stray bicycles in Kyoto and Osaka! If you require any other info, I'd be happy to assist via e-mail.

Not sure if you got my e-mail of yesterday's date (Saturday 27th). I'm not sure I sent it correctly. If not I'll write it again as it had a question re booking seats on JAL.

Re the photographs: could you tell us how to get your them up on our computer please as we would really like to see them? You mention Flikr but what links do we need to get to it?

Once again thanks for the infor.

Bill & Valerie Gold

Hello, Bill & Valerie,

(My wife's name is Valerie!)

No, I'm afraid that your message did not arrive yesterday, but not to worry as I always keep an eye open for new posts on my forums.

Not sure if my Flickr account (note correct spelling this time!) will pop up as a clickable HTML link here, but here goes:-

http://www.flickr.com/photos/andytakersdad/collections/72157609392758978/

Please try to e-mail me again. If it fails again, you can always use the Flickr messaging facility.

Best wishes,

Thanks for your second reply. We had a look at your photos and they are great and some of them brought back memories for my husband and we are now really looking forward to our trip. I have been promised this holiday for 20 years!!!

However, as we have never been on a touring holiday it is that part of the holiday we really need information on.

Could you tell us if you were able to book your aircraft seats in advance, i.e. prior to check-in? We are flying premium economy because of the length of the flight and have been told by Thos. Cook that we cannot pre-book seats. As it is such a long flight we really would like seats together.

Also, could you tell us when you received the itinerary for your holiday?

Thanks for your help. It is really appreciated.

Valerie & Bill

Good evening,

I'm so pleased you enjoyed looking at some of my photos. Those represented on Flickr are among the best I took; my son and I took just over 1,800 photos between us!

Same on the way back. We were again given a choice of seats at Kansai airport, except the plane was about half full this time. In the event, we chose a middle block so that we had room to spread out, but our son had other ideas and we didn't see him through most of the flight . He spent most of his time with JAL staff (mainly in the food preparation areas!) and with other passengers.

The itinerary was included with our pack when we collected the tickets. Most of the information is contained in the brochure.

Hope this helps?

It is great that we have been able to get first-hand information on the tour from someone who has experienced it, and so obviously enjoyed it.

We were looking at cameras yesterday so I have no doubt the number of photos my husband takes will more or less equal yours!!!

Once again thanks very much for your help and if we think of anything else we'll contact you. Roll on 28 October ......

You are more than welcome, and if there's anything else you need to know that I may be able to help with, don't hesitate to ask.

Please stay in touch.

Hello again,

We had a wonderful time. I can honestly say we cannot fault the tour or holiday as a whole.

Our tour group of 23 people all mixed very well. Our tour manager, Elaine, was excellent and nothing was too much trouble to her. When she met us at London Heathrow she told Bill and I that she felt she knew us as she had been following our correspondence on Trip Advisor! (Hello and thanks for everything if she reads this). Our two Japanese guides, Keiko and Su, were also friendly and knowledgeable. We felt the tour was well paced and we had free time to do as we wanted at each location.

The hotels we stayed in were all excellent and the Ryokan!!!! You really missed an unforgettable experience! It was small (about a dozen rooms or so), and our rooms looked out over a lake. Only the receptionist spoke a reasonable amount of English (and the four of us who stayed there spoke hardly any Japanese - my husband understood some of the essentials). I must say the futons were surprisingly comforable. We all ate dinner together in one of our rooms. It was beautifully set out in numerous beautiful dishes on two tables. The lady who set the tables spoke to the four of us in Japanese using hand gestures to show us what dishes went with sauces and made us tea to follow and then left us to it. On the second night they had noted that only one of us had eaten the raw fish on the previous evening and served us cooked lobster and crab on the second evening!! Most of the people in the hotel had bought sandwiches from the local 7/11 store because they said the meals in the hotel were expensive and as they were in the mountains there was really no choice of eating places. As you can imagine, when we told them of our experience they were very envious!

When we checked in they asked us what time we wanted breakfast , (7.30), and at 7.25 we got a knock on our door to say that breakfast was ready and we went down to a beautiful Japanese style dining room to be greeted by a waitress waiting by our table to serve tea/coffee and our breakfast waiting on the table for us.

After breakfast we walked out of the hotel, 100 yard or so round the lake, and saw Mount Fuji bathed in beautiful morning sunshine!! What more could you ask for? Bill took photographs of it, with the lake in the foreground, that everyone says look like postcards.

When we left the Ryokan everyone came to say goodbye to us. We felt we were leaving old friends. Wonderful!

My unforgettable experience was seeing the Geishas. We went to a show and afterwards four of us decided to see if we could see any Geishas. I really didn't think we would be lucky enough to find any. It was around 9 o'clock and the people we were with wanted to see the area where they were, however in all we saw around half a dozen and got some wonderful pictures.

All in all, it was a great holiday and one neither Bill or I will forget and one we feel we will never be able to repeat.

Thanks very much for all the information you gave us before we went away.

Best Time to Visit Japan

Japan is an ideal tourist destination around the year. Each season brings forth a glorious beauty to the land that inspires divine poetry in the human mind.

Summer in Japan

During the summer months of June through August, you can visit Hokkaido City and the Japanese mountain ranges where the weather is pleasant. It is the perfect time to go hiking or explore one of the major cities of Japan, try the local cuisine, and relish the soft breeze with the sun shining above. Other places in Japan can be hot during summer, so it is not ideal to plan your Japan tours at this time.

Autumn in Japan

Autumn arrives in Japan with flair in the month of September, lasting till November. This is a perfect time to plan Japan tourism packages when the changing color of the leaves adds vibrancy against the natural highlights that make the scenery of Japan so appealing. This is one of the two peak seasons when most people love to plan their Japan trips in order to witness the attractions with the weather and atmosphere in their favor.

Winter in Japan

Winter in Japan can be quite chilly, especially near the hills. However, the frequent snowfalls are delightful. You can partake in activities in the snow or join the locals in their festivals, which inadvertently makes the atmosphere feel much warmer with friendliness. If you don’t like chilly weather then it is not ideal to visit at this time or during monsoon, which only lasts from May-end to mid-June.

Spring in Japan

Spring is another season in Japan that instantly brightens up your mood. The light breeze coupled with the warm glow of the sun is enticing in itself. When paired with the beautiful cherry blossom raining around the countryside, the delight doubles itself. You can even take part in the cherry blossom festival or have a picnic in the gardens of Japan at this time.

Therefore, the best time to visit Japan for the perfect weather and indulge in local festivals while admiring the scenic views is in autumn or spring when nature takes an interesting recourse. Most people choose their Japan holiday packages at this time, so you can expect the region to be crowded. If you wish to avoid the constant swarm of tourists, you can book your Japan trip packages for winter when the cities are still beautiful and covered in snow. You can also book Japan tour packages for summer, although you need to stay in Hokkaido or the Alps in order to avoid the extreme heat.

How to Reach Japan

As a country that is basically an island surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, how to reach Japan becomes a real challenge, especially from India. The two most popular means of travel for your Japan holiday packages are by air or by seaway.

Only direct flights leave from India to Japan from Delhi airport. Of course, there are connecting flights available from places such as Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, etc. As a country, Japan is ready to welcome you at several of its international airports. Most flights headed to Japan arrive at Haneda airport located in Tokyo city while others may take you straight to your destination or at least closer while landing at Narita airport, Osaka international airport, or Kansai airport.

Being connected to the Pacific Ocean allows Japan to welcome travelers via ships or cruises. However, there are no direct cruises available from India to Japan, although if you are so inclined, you can take a cruise or a flight to Singapore or China and book a cruise from there to Japan. It can be a little more expensive as well as a much longer journey than a flight; however, the luxuries aboard the cruisers keep your entertainment pampered, preparing you for your Japan holidays.

When considering how to reach Japan, take into account the duration of travel for each mode of transportation. While flights can take anywhere between 5 to 8 hours to reach Japan from India, ships and cruises can take days. Ideally, it is best to take a flight as it costs less and you don't end up losing a lot of your Japan holiday time in travel alone.

If you are planning to book Japan packages from anywhere outside the United States of America, the European Union, and the United Kingdom, you will require a visa for your Japan tours. Here is the Japan visa process for your next Japan tour as given below:

  • Download the visa application from the website of the Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and fill out all the details, do not leave anything blank. If certain points do not apply to you, put down ‘Not Applicable or NA’
  • Make sure you have an updated passport that is valid for at least the next six months and has two or more blank pages available for the entry and exit stamps
  • You must have a recent passport-size photograph with a white background where your entire face is visible. You must also write down your Date of Birth at the back of the photograph
  • Have your flight information ready even if you have not yet made the reservation. You must be able to provide the dates of your arrival and departure
  • You have to provide your bank statement to prove that you can sustain your Japan tour with ease. If you have a guarantor or an invitation from a resident of Japan, you can also provide that along with the letter demonstrating that you will be taken care of in case of emergencies
  • You must also furnish any civil certificates such as your identity, marriage certificates, birth certificate, etc.

Applying for a Japanese visa also requires a travel itinerary. If you book the Japan tour package from SOTC, you will have your itinerary available which is required for your visa application. If you are still uncertain about your travel plans on slide bookings, you can refer to the samples available on the website of the Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and get an idea of the details that you need to provide.
