Pickup in Reykjavík or meet at Gljúfrabúi waterfall

We will start our day at  your selected pick up location in Reykjavík , but it’s also possible to be picked up on the way to Seljalandsfoss (Hveragerdi, Selfoss, Hella, and Hvolsvöllur). We will drive towards southeast through the mountain pass of Hellisheiði Plateau towards the south coast of Iceland and make a short stop for a coffee at Hvolsvöllur.  Please note, that this is the only stop where you can buy lunch and snacks for the day.

If you don’t need pickup service, you can meet us and join the tour at Seljalandsfoss.

Seljalandsfoss waterfall

Now we’ll turn off the ring road in the direction of Thorsmork and make a stop at  Seljalandsfoss waterfall . The  breathtakingly beautiful, 60 meters tall   Seljalandsfoss  is one of the most popular waterfalls in Iceland and it’s on the list of Iceland’s 10 most photographed natural wonders.

You can walk behind the waterfall  on a walking trail for a unique viewing angle. Bringing either a raincoat or a waterproof coat along is highly recommended if you want to walk behind the waterfall as you will get soaking wet from the pouring water. On a bright and sunny day, there is a chance to see a rainbow in front of the waterfall.

Gígjökull glacier

Next, we will continue our way in the direction of Thorsmork and head all the way up to  Gígjökull , one of  the outlet glaciers of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano . You can walk entirely to the icefall edge, touch and walk on the glacier.

You can get an idea of the forces that were at play during  the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajokull  that not only destroyed the agricultural region around it but stopped air traffic in Europe.

Powerful glacial bursts emerged from Gigjokull during the eruption, sending meltwater gushing down and flooding the surrounding landscape. You’ll witness that the impact of the eruption is still very visible in the area.

A Game of Thrones filming location

Next stop will explore  a breathtaking canyon , which is just out of this world and  one of the filming locations of Game of Thrones .  Stakkholtsgjá canyon  is a beautiful natural wonder, a 2 kilometers (1.2 mi) long canyon surrounded by 100 meters (330 ft ) high moss-covered cliffs. Walking to the end of the canyon is one of the most rewarding short hikes in Iceland. This dramatic, towering canyon was the filming location of a scene in Game of Thrones season 7 when Jon Snow leads the team to ambush a pack of wights.

The palagonite cliffs have many interesting and dramatic forms, caves, narrow and deep ravines. Inside the canyon, there is a small creek, and you will find a dreamlike,  beautiful waterfall in a high cave  at the end of the track. It’s not just a stunning place, but a place you may think this is one of those places where elves and trolls live. This is one reason why Icelanders have loved and visited this canyon for many years.

Thorsmork, the Valley of Thor

After our walk in the canyon, we will follow our way to deep into  Thorsmork, the scenic valley of Thor . This will be the best playground for your super jeep:  crossing rivers and handling the rough terrain  will be a  great adventure .  Thorsmork  is a  natural reserve  in a remote area of the southern  Icelandic Highlands , nestled between the  Myrdalsjokull, Eyjafjallajokull and Tindfjallajokull glaciers , and one of the most favorite location for Icelanders and many travelers. The valley is a green oasis  between the rivers Krossá, Þröngá and Markarfljót with wide vegetation of moss, birchwood, and other small shrubs. This lush green area contrasts dramatically against the  black sand desert  of the Markarfljót riverbed and the imposing glaciers around it. Locals swear that Thorsmork is one of the most beautiful destinations in Iceland. This is the reason that many Icelanders come here to hike, ride or just relax among the birch trees with their family.

Once we are deep into the Thorsmork valley, you have the opportunity to enjoy the amazing landscape, have lunch and take nice short hikes around the area, and really drink in the beautiful  unspoiled nature of Iceland .

Whatever the season, in Thorsmork, you always have a lot of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors in a magnificent landscape that looks like scenes from the Lord of the Rings.  Surrounded by ice caps , which shelter the valley below, the weather in Thorsmork is very often much better than in the rest of south Iceland.

A hidden gem

On our way back we will stop at one of our favorite places.  Nauthúsagil   ravine  is a true  hidden gem of Iceland’s South Coas t. Nauthúsagil’s famed characteristics are the rowan trees growing on the ridges, sometimes horizontally, creating a roof of leaves. We will walk through the narrow ravine and explore its unique, beautiful world. At the end of the ravine, there is an  enchanting waterfall  waiting for us. The combination of the waterfall and the light from above is unrealistically beautiful.

After an exciting day of exploring the great wonders of the Thorsmork area, we will make our way back out stopping at Hvolsvöllur for a coffee. We will return to Reykjavík around 6 PM approximately.

Thrilling 7-Hour Super Jeep Tour of South Coast and Highlands from Thorsmork

Thorsmork offers some of the most breathtaking sights in Iceland.

Description

Marvel at the beauty of Thorsmork Nature Reserve inside a super jeep and discover its many secrets. This seven-hour, small-group guided tour brings you right to the heart of one of the most treasured places of many Icelanders.

This thrilling tour begins when a big and comfortable super jeep picks you up in Thorsmork. You will then drive along smooth and uneven roads regular cars can’t go through. You’ll also see Thorsmork’s majestic landscapes as you go uphill or downhill.

Translated as “Valley of Thor” in English, Thorsmork’s is home to many of Iceland’s most incredible natural wonders. Thorsmork is in a valley nestled by three glaciers: Myrdalsjokull, Tindfjallajokull, and Eyjafjallajokull.

Interestingly, Eyjafjallajokull made the headlines when it erupted in 2010. The eruption caused major air travel disruptions, affecting over 100,000 flights and about seven million passengers for an entire week.

With many stories about Iceland, an experienced guide will share essential details about different spots. Your guide will navigate the super jeep across the bumpy trails, rivers, and creeks.

However, riding a super jeep is only part of this adventure. The tour also involves some hiking, so you better bring a trusty pair of hiking boots, warm clothing, and a water bottle. Also, a light lunch will be provided.

The tour lets you appreciate Gigjokull, one of Eyjafjallajokull’s two glacier outlets, and Tindfjallajokull, the second of the three main glaciers surrounding Thorsmork.

The super jeep then takes you outside the Thorsmork Nature Reserve for an important stop at Seljalandsfoss, a famous waterfall known for its impressive natural features. Seljalandsfoss boasts a drop of 200 feet (60 meters), which is already a sight.

But Seljalandsfoss’ most distinguishing feature is the pathway stretching around it. This pathway allows visitors to circle the waterfall - a feature that few waterfalls in the world offer.

The super jeep tour also takes you to Stakkholtsgja, one of the most remarkable canyons in South Iceland. The canyon is around 328 feet (100 meters) deep and 1.2 miles (two kilometers) long. You can hike through Stakkholtsgja until you reach a picturesque waterfall.

Hiking through Stakkholtsgja and back takes about an hour and a half to finish. However, the pathways are relatively flat despite not being paved.

After all the hiking and exploring, the super jeep will take you back to the initial pick-up location.

Don’t miss this chance to experience some of Iceland’s most amazing natural wonders. Check availability now by choosing a date.

Thorsmork Iceland jeep tour

thorsmork jeep tour

See the beautiful and recluse natural reserve and paradise for hikers, Thorsmork valley, on the Thorsmork Iceland Jeep Tour.

Thorsmork is a magical nature reserve set between three glaciers. The valley, wich takes it´s name from the Norse god Thor, is rich with geological wonders. With its many hiking trails, this is truly a hiker´s paradise. Poetic rivers and stately mountains.

Located on the south coast of Iceland, the region can be reached best by car or bus. As usual, a lot of the landmarks are only reached by hiking, so appropriate clothing is advised. Furthermore, the region with partly plain areas, partly hills and mountains is perfectly suited for an adventure: Driving off-road is a stunning experience you would not want to miss.

Thorsmork is one of the most popular hiking areas in Iceland. Named after the pagan god of thunder, Thor (Thorsmork translates, roughly, to “Thor’s forest”), the valley often brings to mind the cinematic landscapes of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The valley is sure to take your breath away.

Thorsmork Iceland jeep tour itinerary

We begin the trip with a stop at Seljalandsfoss waterfall, the waterfall you can walk behind. Then we head to Thorsmork valley for a Super jeep off-road adventure. On the way to our next stop Gígjökull Glacier tongue we cross many rivers and drive on rough roads. At the end of the valley we have the option of many different hiking trails.

We recommend hiking shoes and waterproof jacket for this adventure.

This name may sound familiar to you since it was this volcano which erupted in April of 2010 paralyzing flights and leaving the northern European region locked in blackened skies for a substantial period of time. Take advantage of this opportunity and explore this magical area for yourself!

Take free reign of your adventurous spirit.  On this trip you’ll come across 10 glacial rivers.  I bet you think they’ll be difficult to traverse or cross?  Don’t worry with our Super Jeep it’ll be a piece of cake.  Also, if we have time and weather permitting, we also plan on seeing the magnificent Stakkholtsgja Canyon which also has its own waterfall. Last but not least, we will be seeing the Thorsmork Valley.  This valley is very popular with trekkers.  You’ll be blown away and thoroughly impressed by this genuine natural beauty.  Whether it be the rivers or the environment they helped to shape and mold, we are sure that both will surely captivate you.  After this exceptional outing on our Super Jeep we will return to the capital city.

Thórsmörk Volcano Hike Iceland - Super Jeep Safari & Volcano Hike

Since 2010 hikers have flocked from Þórsmörk valley to the starting point of the Eyjafjallajökull volcanic eruption to witness the incredible landscape and the stunning two, completely new, volcanic craters. The  new craters were named; ‘Magni’ and ‘Móði’, after the sons of Þór, translating as ‘brave’ and ‘strong’.

This was thought to be fitting as the craters sit right above the valley of Thor.  This incredible hike should not be missed. What is the history of thorsmork.

Þórsmörk is linked with some interesting Norse mythology and most notably the Norse God, Þór (Thor). Thor the Pagan God of thunder and protector of mankind, with his famous hammer, played an important role in Icelanders’ beliefs.

Thorsmork Canyon in Iceland

The influence of the Pagan religion is evident in many location names spread wide and far across the country. Another location named after Þór is Þórshöfn, a small fishing village in the North East of Iceland.

At this location, the story is very interesting and well known in local Icelandic folklore. Thor is believed to have struck down his hammer, Mjölnir, creating the deep depression and forming the valley, therefore, the valley was named after its strong and powerful creator.

Where is Thorsmork located?

Thorsmork is a stunning mountain ridge within a remote area of the southern Icelandic highlands. At just over 150 km (93,2) from  Reykjavík  and 100 km from  Selfoss  (62 mi), Thor’s Valley is the perfect location to escape the city and explore nature.

Located between the glaciers Tindfjallajökull and  Eyjafjallajökull , the journey is potentially challenging if you self-drive.

The roads become very rough and the River Krossá has to be crossed, which can have a strong current. A 4 x 4 vehicle with river crossing insurance cover is therefore essential.

How to get to Thorsmork

Self Drive As mentioned, self-drivers need to get a 4×4 with suitable insurance cover to cross the river. It is important to tell your rental car provider that you are planning to drive to Thorsmork. From Reykjavik, the journey will take 2 ½ to 3 hours, via route 1 and road number 249.

Thorsmork Volcano Hike

This tour begins with a super jeep tour to the valley, to begin a challenging hike from Thorsmork up to Fimmvorduhals Pass. From beginning to end, the tour takes around 12 hours and incorporates  Fimmvörðuháls , Eyjafjallajökull, Magni and Móði craters, and  Seljalandsfoss waterfall.

8-Day Grand Laugavegur Trek

If you’re feeling more adventurous, hike through a lava field, bathe in a hot spring river and trek Thorsmork and  Landmannalaugar Nature Reserve . Join us for along one of the world’s best trails to enjoy Iceland’s best landscapes.

What do you wear to hike Thorsmork?

Always equip yourself with excellent, worn in, waterproof hiking boots. The terrain varies wildly, so at times you may traverse glacier river crossings or jagged frozen lava.

Weather in Iceland is ever-changing so be sure to pack warm layers. Good socks are also an important factor for active hikers, warm socks with good ventilation.

Shoes and socks for hiking

First, pack warm and insulating thermal base layers. Then you will need  a hat, a buff is great and gloves, a wind- and waterproof jacket, fleece or wool sweater, and some light shoes to wade through rivers.

When in doubt, be over-prepared. If you are hiking without a tour group, make sure you have GPS and a Thorsmork hiking trails map.

Clothing for hiking

Sunglasses and sunscreen are also a necessary accessory when spending time in nature in Iceland. The sun here is surprisingly strong and your skin might burn here even if you are from a warm country.

Fairly difficult. We’ve ranked it as ‘challenging’ but of course, it is subjective and you might find it relatively easy!

The route can get more demanding in certain areas, but if you’re over the age of 14 and in good health, the hike will be really enjoyable.

Keep in mind that even in June there may still be snow and ice at the higher elevations.

Thorsmork to Fimmvorduhals volcano trail Landscape

Winter is gorgeous but getting to the valley is more hazardous. You will need to join a tour with an experienced and knowledgeable guide to stay safe and really enjoy the visit!

  • Self-drive involves crossing several glacier rivers which are sometimes fast and unpredictable. You need to be experienced at 4WD through rivers to cross.
  • Pack clothes to be able to dress in layers

Signpost at Thorsmork hiking trek

Thorsmork is magical all year round. Winter can be an incredible experience. When the landscape is covered in ice and snow, the only access to Thorsmork is by highly-modified super-jeeps, as part of a guided tour.

panoramic view of Thorsmork in winter

During winter (October 16th to April 30th) the road into Þórsmörk is impassable.

The tour may be more difficult and a lot colder, but there is a greater chance of catching the northern lights!

Just like almost any other scenic place in Iceland, Thorsmork has made an appearance on famous show Game of Thrones. In season 7 episode 6,  Jon Snow and his team trek across a rough terrain to ambush a group of wights in a towering but quiet, moss-covered gully.

This scene was filmed in the beautiful Stakkholtsgjá Canyon on the way into Þórsmörk nowhere close to the mountain  Kirkjufell  that appears right before on this scene. These locations have been exquisitely well cut together appearing as they are close to one another in the episode.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Difficulty Ratings

Easy, moderate, challenging … What does this really mean? Below you can read the definitions we use for our ratings. We hope this will help you get an idea of the trip difficulty to make sure you choose a trip that suits you best.

Easy Suitable for most people in fair condition. You have to be able to walk on uneven surfaces and hike for at least 2 – 3 hours at a slow pace, with breaks. Trails are generally of good quality and glaciers travel at a relatively low angle.

Moderate Suitable for those in good condition who are able to walk for about 4 hours at a low or moderate pace. Trails are generally of good quality and glaciers travel at a relatively low angle.

Challenging For someone in good hiking condition and with experience of hiking. Trails are generally in fair conditions but some parts of the tour might be off track. Glacier/snow travel can be on uneven ground with challenging sections. Increased distance. We recommend guests have the ability to cover 12 km a day on rugged trails and snow.

Demanding Only a few of our trips are defined as Demanding. Hence most of our tours are rated Easy, moderate, or challenging.

Demanding tours are for someone in very good hiking and physical condition. Trails are generally in fair conditions but large sections of the tour might be off track. Glacier/snow travel on uneven ground with some challenging sections. Increased distance. We recommend guests have the ability to cover 20 km a day on uneven trails and snow. A significant increase in elevation and some technical difficulty should be expected.

Equipment list

Equipment needed can vary greatly from season to season as well as the length of your tour. The following list can be used as a guideline for our trekking, hiking, and longer Snowmobile tours in Iceland.

Try to pack as lightly as possible and take only essentials. Excess baggage can be a burden to you and to our support crew. Keep in mind that there are limits on how much your duffel bag can weigh because the weight restrictions on international and domestic flights are usually around 20 kg.

Luggage for Multiday tours and longer journeys with assistance vehicle An extra bag clearly marked with your name can be kept at your Reykjavik accommodation. Large duffel bag (60/80 liters) sturdy and water-resistant, not exceeding 15 kg Daypack (30 to 50 liters)

Clothing You will need to bring comfortable and adequate clothing to protect you from the cold and wet weather. Wool, synthetics, and wool/synthetic blends are good. We discourage the use of cotton, as this does not insulate against cold or wet conditions. When camping, tents are provided. You will be responsible for bringing your mattress and sleeping bag.

When layering, the innermost layer should be long underwear. The middle layer can be a synthetic turtleneck or wool shirt, and pants. The outermost layer should be a synthetic jacket, and/or a good quality Gore-Tex wind/rain parka and over-pants.

For quantities for each item listed, use your own judgment, based on the expected weather conditions and overall packing/weight restrictions for your luggage.

  • Regular underwear. Synthetics are easier to wash and dry
  • Synthetic or wool thermal underwear
  • Long-sleeved, synthetic, or wool shirt
  • Short-sleeved synthetic or cotton/synthetic T-shirts
  • Medium-weight synthetic fleece sweater or jacket
  • Full-length pants, quick-drying synthetic fabric

Fantastic experience

"We had an amazing experience on this tour. Our driver (Elias) was knowledgeable and had the perfect balance of sharing information but also giving us time to reflect and enjoy the breathtaking landscape of Iceland. Highly recommend this company, tour, and driver!"

Glacier hike with Alberto Marini

"We had a private guided glacier walk for 3 active senior friends with Alberto Marini who is an Italian-born mountain/rock climber. Though cautious by nature, I felt completely comfortable with Alberto who apparently trained many of the other guides we encountered. He was knowledgeable about glaciers and the natural history of Iceland-verified by my geologist husband. Definitely worth doing especially if with Alberto."

Snowmobiling gone wild on a glacier

"We had a private tour with 2 couples to do snowmobiling on a glacier. Magnus was a very skilled ATV driver taking us on an adventurous 1hour drive to get to the glacier to meet snowmobiles. We enjoyed the vantage point even on a cloudy windy day to ride around to see the surrounding volcanoes. Quite a fun 3 hour tour."

Private Tour to Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach

" We took a private tour from Hotel Ranga out to Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach. We rented a car but decided it was too far to drive on our own there and back in one day so we booked a tour with Southcoast.

Our driver, Stefan, was fantastic! It was a 10-hour journey (including a stop for lunch) so it was nice to have a guide that was a great conversationalist and very knowledgeable about Iceland. He answered all of our questions about Iceland and stopped at a few places we never would have found on our own.

We had a gorgeous day and the pictures we got on Diamond Beach were out of this world. Would highly recommend this company and this guide, especially if you're interested in a private tour. "

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
