Singapore sights, gems of Java, Bali highs and Komodo giants combine with stays in luxurious exotic resorts to make this small group adventure culturally enriching in every way. By boat to Komodo National Park

Back in time to the island home of the komodo dragon.

Found in the Komodo Islands of Indonesia, the Komodo dragon is an unusually large species of monitor lizard... the largest living lizard on Earth, growing up to 10 feet in length and weighing around 150 pounds. These carnivorous predators hunt mammals and birds, sometimes in packs of two or three, and often feed on carrion as well. Komodo dragons usually avoid humans, although attacks on people have occurred. First noted by scientists about a century ago, they've become popular attractions in zoos around the world. Observe them, safely, in their natural habitat – on a visit with a local guide by boat to Komodo National Park, established to protect the species.

Traditional dance on Bali

A sunset performance of traditional balinese dance.

Traditional dance is a cultural highlight on Bali. One popular form of Balinese dance, known as Kecak (a.k.a. the Ramayana Monkey Chant), was developed on Bali in the 1930s. Typically performed by a circle of 150 or so male dancers wearing checked cloth around their waists, it calls for the dancers to percussively chant "chak" and move their hands and arms, depicting a battle from the ancient epic poem, the Ramayana. Seeing it performed at sunset is an experience you won't soon forget!

An evening at Prambanan Temple

Enjoy a spectacular ballet show at prambanan temple.

Built in the 10th century, Prambanan Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the island of Java, is the largest temple complex dedicated to the Hindu deity Shiva in Indonesia. With this imposing temple as a backdrop, watch a performance of a ballet show involving 200 professional dancers and musicians on an open-air stage.

Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay

Inspired by traditional Balinese architecture, the Resort's villas are housed within a private stone-walled courtyard featuring separate thatched-roof pavilions. Each villa includes oversized indoor and outdoor living areas, lush gardens, a private pool and a sun terrace.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

All U.S. citizens require a valid passport to enter Singapore and Indonesia, and that passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the completion of travel. (Please note that although adult passports are valid for a full ten years, children's passports require renewal every five years.)  Your passport must also contain at least three blank visa pages, two of which need to be side by side of one another. If you are a United States citizen and do not have a valid passport, please contact the closest U.S. passport agency or consult the U.S. State Department web site for detailed information on how to obtain or renew your passport at: www.travel.state.gov .

All travelers must fill out the SG Arrival Card at least 3 days prior to their arrival in Singapore. This can be found at: eservices.ica.gov.sg/sgarrivalcard/ .

U.S. Citizens do not require a visa for Singapore. A visa is required for Indonesia. This will be issued on our arrival in Indonesia and Tauck will be taking care of the visa fee.

Non-U.S. citizens should check with the Embassies or Consulates of Singapore and Indonesia to determine necessary travel documents.

We strongly recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Note: For activities marked with an asterisk (*) in day-by-day descriptions, participation is at your own risk; a signed liability waiver will be required.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage – General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and only those items you need handy during the day such as purses, make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or in the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

We advise that you always drink bottled water with an unbroken seal. Avoid having ice in your drinks, and clean your teeth with bottled water.

Public toilet facilities are rare. You are encouraged to take every opportunity to use a clean toilet in places such as hotels and restaurants. Most hotels catering to an international clientele provide western style restroom facilities.

Always keep mosquito repellent with you and be sure to pay special attention to mosquito protection between dusk and dawn.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify Tauck as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Some of the countries visited on this itinerary may require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against certain diseases in order to enter the country.  These requirements are subject to frequent change as outbreaks occur and subside in different areas, and it is therefore crucial that you obtain the very latest information on entry requirements as you prepare for your journey.

For the most current information, please consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by clicking here  and the World Health Organization (WHO) by clicking here . You may also wish to visit the web sites for the embassies of the countries you will be visiting.  Besides providing details on vaccination requirements, these sites can also provide information on vaccinations that may be recommended (but aren't required) and other potential health issues for which no vaccines are available.

Any decisions relating to your health, of course, should not be based solely on information provided by a web site.  It is critically important that you consult with your personal physician prior to your journey to obtain any required vaccinations and to review any optional recommendations offered by the CDC or other sources.

Please be sure to discuss your journey with your physician at least four to six weeks in advance of your departure, as certain vaccinations take time to become fully effective.  Also, be certain to ask your physician for proof of any vaccinations you receive, and to pack this proof along with your other travel documents in your carry-on luggage (not in your checked luggage).

Researching and complying with vaccination entry requirements for the countries visited on this itinerary is the responsibility of the traveler and not Tauck. Tauck is therefore not responsible for any expenses incurred or disruptions to travel caused by improper or incomplete vaccinations, or by the failure to provide proof of required vaccinations.

If you do not obtain the necessary vaccinations and proper documentation, you may be denied entry into one or more countries, or temporarily quarantined until the necessary vaccinations are administered, or until proper documentation is provided.

This Southeast Asia tour is very active and includes four on-tour flights. You should be in good health and able to walk moderate distances over varied terrain.  This tour includes numerous steps throughout the itinerary. Various modes of transportation will be used to highlight different aspects of the culture and geography Singapore and Indonesia, including airplane, train, motor coach and boat.

There is a significant amount of walking on this journey; however, the pace of the itinerary has been carefully planned to intersperse sightseeing with leisurely days to ensure you have a most enjoyable time.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON SUPPLEMENTAL OXYGEN AND MOBILITY ISSUES:  This Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate oxygen tanks, wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Oxygen tanks are strictly prohibited in many foreign countries on regional flights aboard small aircraft, such as those intra-tour flights featured on this Tauck journey.  Likewise, the very limited cargo capacity on such flights prohibits the transport of wheelchairs or motorized scooters.

Guests should also bear in mind that the infrastructure in many foreign countries, particularly in developing countries, often presents severe and even insurmountable challenges for those with walking difficulties or other mobility issues.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it. Due to the ancient nature of several of the sites you will visit during your sojourn in Singapore and Indonesia, stairs and walkways are sometimes dark, uneven, steep and/or slippery.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Smoking is not permitted on the motor coaches. Hotels in Singapore and Indonesia do not always have designated non-smoking rooms, but your preference will be forwarded to the hotels and every effort will be made to accommodate your request, although it cannot be guaranteed.

Airline Disinsection

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued a guidance letter that requires airlines and travel agents to disclose to consumers countries that require the use of insecticides by airlines. Please click here for more information.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

  Singapore & Bali

A fabulous South East Asia combination

This trip is one of our favourite two-stop holidays. You’ll begin in glittering Singapore, shopping on Orchard Road, taking in the views and post-sundown light show at Gardens by the Bay and sampling some of the best food in the Far East before heading for beautiful Bali for a wellbeing retreat at the all-pool villa The Elysian.

Recommended itinerary

Days 1-4 - singapore, oasia hotel downtown, singapore.

This is a real stand-out hotel in Singapore. It's chic, there's a gin bar, the sky terrace and this where you can head for Sunday morning yoga if you're visiting over the weekend. For a few days in the city, this is certainly what you might call retreat-like after days exploring and sampling the local markets (especially the street food).

CIN CIN

Days 4-10 - Bali

The elysian, bali.

Take that well-being and turn it up several notches at The Elysian in Bali. This is a hip collection of villas with private pools. They’re stunning and spacious and once you’ve settled on an oversized daybed by the main pool, we’re not sure you’ll want to leave.

Day 6 Seminyak - Ubud - Nusa Dua (Breakfast)

After breakfast, you will be picked up by your guide and go to Ubud to look around.

Ubud Monkey Forest First, you will enjoy a visit to the sacred monkey forest of Ubud. This ecological reserve strives to maintain the viability of the Balinese long-tailed macaque. It is also a nature reserve and Hindu temple complex in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia.

Ubud Palace The palace and its temple, PuriSaren Agung, share a space in the heart of Ubud. The compound was mostly built after the 1917 earthquake and the local royal family still lives here. You can wander around most of the large compound and explore the many traditional, though not excessively ornate, buildings.

Take time to appreciate the stone carvings, many by noted local artists such as I GustiNyomanLempad. Just to the north, Pura Marajan Agung is the private temple for the royal family. The compound across from the palace has a magnificent banyan tree and is also used as a residence for the family.

Ubud Market Set amidst emerald-green rice paddies and steep ravines in the stunning central Balinese foothills, Ubud was originally an important source of medicinal herbs and plants. Ubud, in fact, is derived from the Balinese word for medicine – Ubad.

Visit Ubud art market located in the center of the town just opposite the Palace, stroll in the market and through the streets – the only way to really appreciate the special atmosphere one will find here.

After that, you will return to your hotel to rest before leaving for Devdan Show in the evening.

Devdan Show (SIC – Sharing Basis) Showtime: 19.30 – 21.00

The Devdan show in Bali is an alluring and daring show that takes the audience on a magical journey across Bali and the Indonesian Archipelago.

Bali’s Devdan show features a fusion of traditional Indonesian dancing with modern contemporary dance, world-class aerial acrobatic attractions, dazzling costumes, and hi-tech special effects. The show is one of the most amazing Bali attractions and is the perfect choice to fulfill your entertainment activities during your stay in Bali.

The show was created in Bali with the aspiration to introduce and entertain guests with the artistic and natural attractions that are alive today in Bali and Indonesia. Premiers with four showtimes per week at Bali s newest and most advanced theatrical complex located in the heart of Nusa Dua Bali, Bali’s number one tourist and entertainment area.

Acrobats and Artists from around Indonesia and the world have been in rehearsal activities for months in order to provide guests with one of the most memorable attractions during their visit to Bali.

Day 7 Seminyak (Breakfast, Lunch)

Bali Midlands Spend a full day discovering the natural beauty and ancient relics of the Balinese midlands.

Meet your guide and driver and start the day with a visit to Pura Taman Ayun, the 17th-century temple of Mengwi, set in a beautiful park with trees and ponds full of lotus blossoms. The large spacious temples and multi-tiered shrines are surrounded by a wide, elegant moat.

Continue to Bedugul, a village in the central highlands famous for its stunning beauty and three lakes. Stroll around the traditional market where a myriad of fruits, vegetables, orchids, exotic spices, and souvenirs are for sale. At the nearby Lake Bratan, you can photograph the Ulun Danu temple, built on small islands in the serene lake.

After lunch in a local restaurant drive south to the famous UNESCO heritage listed rice terraces of Jatiluwih. Trek through this area of green stepped-rice fields and hear about the Subak irrigation system that has been preserved by the Balinese farmers for centuries. Return to your hotel via scenic roads.

An Australian man has reportedly been arrested in Bali on drugs charges.

7 News reports Troy Smith, from Port Lincoln in South Australia, was arrested on the Indonesian island while on holiday with his wife.

It is alleged Mr Smith was carrying 3.5g of methamphetamine.

It is understood Indonesian police officers arrested the man at his Canggu hotel on Thursday and he is now in custody.

Indonesian law carries strict anti-drug law and the Port Lincoln father could face a lengthy stint in prison for the alleged crime.

A Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman said the department was providing “consular assistance to an Australian man detained in Bali”.

“Owing to our privacy obligations we are unable to provide further comment.”

DFAT assistance can include visits to prison to monitor the welfare of locked-up Australians, the provision of lists for local lawyers and help communicating with family members or nominated contacts.

Japan blocks overcrowded selfie spot, bans tourists from traditional areas to cope with explosion of travellers

People cross a busy intersection at night in Tokyo.

After fears that tourist numbers would never return to pre-pandemic levels, it may now be a case of too much of a good thing for Japan.

A combination of a weak yen, more affordable airfares, the relaxation of coronavirus restrictions and "revenge travel" has led to monthly visitors to Japan hitting a record high.

Over-tourism is now such a problem for one Japanese town it has erected a barrier to block snow-capped views of Mount Fuji, after locals complained about the bad behaviour of selfie-seeking visitors.

So, what measures have been implemented to curb over-tourism?

How is Japan handling over-tourism?

A woman takes a photograph of illuminated cherry blossoms in full bloom

Over-tourism happens when so many visitors are attracted to an area that life becomes unpleasant for the locals, despite any economic or other ostensible benefits.

One of Japan's busiest tourist periods of the year ended on Monday.

Golden Week — which ran from April 27 to May 5 — coincided with multiple public holidays and near-perfect spring weather.

To help deal with all the international tourists in the country during one of Japan's busiest periods, authorities have tried a range of measures.

Two women wearing kimonos and masks walk down steps.

In Kamakura, a popular temple city, English-speaking guides have been helping to direct tourists to stop them obstructing busy train stations, according to Nikkei.

Kyoto's traditional neighbourhood, Gion, recently banned visitors from its small private alleys.

Locals had complained of snap-happy tourists harassing the city's immaculately attired geisha, who had to remind them it was "not a theme park".

Authorities in Kyoto have also reportedly installed screens at the main train station showing live feeds of tourist areas so visitors can assess crowds and plan their trips better.

Many people visit the small, scenic Japanese town of Fujikawaguchiko in Yamanashi Prefecture, causing chaos on local streets while trying to photograph Mount Fuji.

Authorities said they had had enough of the excessive number of foreigners littering, ignoring traffic regulations and even climbing on roofs of office buildings in search of the perfect selfie spot.

Exasperated town officials eventually blocked the view of Mount Fuji with a 2.5-metre-high black barrier.

"It's regrettable we have to do this because of some tourists who can't respect rules," a town official said.

Hikers using the most popular route to climb Mount Fuji, where the climbing season begins in July, will be charged 2,000 yen ($19.50).

Numbers will be capped.

Where are Japan's visitors from?

The January earthquake in the western prefecture of Ishikawa had minimal impact on 2024 arrivals, according to the Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO).

Tourist numbers have quickly rebounded, and apart from Australia, Japan has had a large influx of visitors from South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Street Kart, which offers rides for tourists in Tokyo, Okinawa and Osaka, said most were from Australia, the US, Canada and the UK — with decent numbers from Europe and Asia.

"The demand for our activity has risen significantly [this year] in conjunction with the increase of visitors to Japan," Street Kart spokesperson Mai Ishido told the ABC.

However, tourism from China has stayed well below pre-pandemic levels.

The JNTO said visitors from China, which had made up nearly a third of all visitors and 40 per cent of tourist spending, were slowly returning.

The April numbers aren't out yet, but in March, visitors to Japan hit a record high of 3.08 million visitors, according to the JNTO.

The previous record of 2.99 million was set in July 2019 during a year that Japan welcomed a record 31.9 million visitors.

It's a stark contrast from the early days of the pandemic, when Tokyo banned spectators from the postponed Olympics in 2021 .

Tourists have been making the most of Japan's weak yen, which fell to a three-decade low against the US dollar last month.

Even Australia's faltering currency still has buying power in Japan, with one dollar converting to almost 102 yen, up more than 10 per cent from a year ago.

A hearty dinner on Tokyo's famous Ramen Street will set you back around 1,080 yen ($10.55) while a bus ride in Kyoto costs 230 yen ($2.25) — both cheaper than Australia's capital cities.

What have other countries done?

Over-tourism has also affected other popular Asian destinations, like Bali and Thailand, with international travel returning to normal after the pandemic.

A new $15 tourism tax was introduced to Bail in February, after a series of incidents involving visitors desecrating holy sites and behaving badly.

A woman wearing a blue long sleeve shirt surfs a wave on her surfboard.

In Thailand's Maya Bay, which was made famous by The Beach, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, a maximum of 375 visitors are allowed at one time.

Even though access had earlier been restricted and it was later closed for three years, an estimated 80 per cent of the coral reefs there died due to over-tourism.

While there are plenty of plans to restrict and control tourist numbers, not everyone in Japan is sick of all the foreign visitors.

Ms Ishido from Street Kart said there was no such thing as having too many tourists and that everyone was welcome.

"We hope to see many more happy smiling faces coming to and from our shops," spokeswoman Ms Ishido told the ABC.
