View of Sitges, province of Barcelona (Catalonia)

Located between the sea and the mountains, the city of Sitges (which belongs to Barcelona) offers a wide variety of leisure activities to visitors. The Coast of Garraf, on the Mediterranean sea and the surrounding mountains, provide a beautiful natural setting to this town.

The interesting historic quarter, with an extensive cultural calendar, complements the luxury compounds, golf courses and marinas right next to the beach. The cuisine from Sitges gathers the most representative Catalan dishes and creates exquisite recipes like "xató".

Sitges is one of the most representative towns of Costa de Garraf , Barcelona's southern littoral. Beaches with pristine waters, some of which have been awarded the blue flag eco-label and the proximity of the mountains make of Sitges a privileged destination. The urban centre is also worth a visit. It has beautiful religious buildings such as the churches of Sant Bartomeu and Santa Tecla. Casa de la Vila , a nineteenth-century Gothic revival building and Palau Maricel, with Renaissance, Baroque and medieval elements, are other interesting places to visit in the city. The Modernist aesthetics from the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth century left in Sitges beautiful buildings like Cau Ferrat, the house-studio of writer and painter Santiago Rusiñol . This artist moved to Sitges in 1891 and turned it into a meeting point for artists and intellectuals, giving it the bohemian air that it still preserves. Art and Culture Sitges' cultural calendar includes important events such as the International Vintage Car Rally (of National Tourist Interest), Catalonia International Film Festival and the celebration of Corpus Christi. In addition, the traveller has three different museums to visit, in order to become acquainted with the area's cultural life. The house-studio of Rusiñol exhibits his works next to paintings by El Greco, Zuloaga and Picasso, among others. At the Maricel Museum they have Romanesque, Gothic and Modern art collections. To delve more deeply into nineteenth-century Catalan society, you must visit the Romantic Museum . All around, there are innumerable restaurants where to try the local cuisine — in the historic quarter, the harbour and along the beaches. One of the main dishes is "xató", made with curly endive, cod, tuna, anchovies and olives, with a Romescu dressing (made with roasted chilli peppers, toasted almonds, garlic and olive oil). Stewed cuttlefish with potatoes and ali-oli, tuna hotpot and "fideuá" (paella with elbow macaroni instead of rice) are among the delicacies prepared in Sitges. These dishes should be had with some wine with Denominación de Origen Alella, Penedés, or Pla de Bages (Designation of Origin, the seal of quality and origin given in Spain to exceptional products from specific regions). Marinas More than four kilometres of fine, white beaches stretch along the coast of this town near Barcelona. Equipped with all kinds of service facilities, these beaches are the perfect leisure retreat. The best known of these are well connected and their shallow waters do not have a lot of swell. Others are located in remote spots and others are nudist. The marinas have a number of nautical activities available and many leisure companies have adventure programmes that include climbing, potholing and hiking. Sitges is located between the Mediterranean Sea and the Coastal Mountain Range, reason why it has some spectacular sceneries. These gorgeous views can be enjoyed from Villafranca del Penedés and Sant Sadurní d´Anoia. The Cistercian Monastery of Santes Creus, declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO, is another exciting trip. The cities of Tarragona and Barcelona are also attractive choices. The ancient Roman Tarraco, situated in the middle of Costa Daurada, is lined with vast beaches, its archaeological compounds have also been declared World Heritage. This same title is held by several sites in Barcelona , like Park Güell, Palau Güell, Casa Milá, Palau de la Música Catalana (Catalonia Music Hall) and the Hospital of Sant Pau. The Gothic quarter, Ciutat Vella and Montjuïc are also excellent places to cover in our journey through the city of Barcelona.

Sitges is a very popular tourist resort due to it’s reputation for gay tourism, it’s great beaches and especially it’s closeness to the major Spanish city of Barcelona.

Tourists have been coming to Sitges since the late 19th century when many artists and writers frequented the small town which was then principally a small fishing town.

Sitges is located on Spain’s Costa Dorada about 40 km south-west of Barcelona.

Sitges has a pretty seafront esplanade. Evening in Sitges brings out people who gather to people-watch from the many cafes and bars. The town is packed with fine restaurants offering fresh sea food, paella and other traditional Spanish dishes.

Clearly Sitges fills up on the weekends however its popularity as a tourist destination is not just down to the fine sandy beaches. Sitges is also noteworthy for its many art museums, pretty old town and dazzling colourful fiestas (festivals).

SITGES BEACHES

Sitges main attaction for tourists are its beaches of which there are seventeen with most very close to the town. All the beaches in Sitges are sandy beaches with clean, safe waters. The main beaches are lined with palm trees, have plenty of facilities with many cafes, bars and restaurants.

Sitges beach

If you are visiting Sitges with a family then you will probably want to head for the more family-orientated beaches of which Playa de la Fragata, Playa de los Barcos and San Sebastian and are the most well-known.

These Sitges beaches do not have so much of the hedonistic atmosphere and have shallow waters which are great for paddling in when your youngsters have not learned to swim yet.

For a different type of beach head west of Sitges and you will find quiet almost deserted beaches including many beaches for nude sunbathing (naturists).

The beach of Playa de las Balmins is the most popular gay beach especially with gay naturists.

GETTING TO SITGES

By Bus: The closet airport to Sitges is at Barcelona. Another option is the airport at Girona. From Barcelona airport you can get a MonBus bus service directly to Sitges.

By Train: From Barcelona airport you can get a train which goes via Barcelona’s Sants station.

Below is a Google map of Sitges:

HISTORY OF SITGES

Sitges first became fashionable in the late 19th century when writers and artists were attracted to what was then a picturesque little fishing village.

The old town of Sitges is at the very centre of Sitges and this old quarter dates back to ancient medieval times. The streets are very narrow and are cobblestoned and lined with tiny fishermen’s cottages complete with terracotta roofs. In the old town are the Baroque-style church and what remains of the medieval walls which used to surround Sitges.

For visitors to Sitges interested in history there are a number of noteworthy museums and art galleries.

Make sure you visit the Museu Cau Ferrat. This is actually an old fisherman’s cottages and was once home to the well-known artist Santiago Rusinol. The Museu Cau Ferrat displays paintings and ceramics from Pablo Picasso, El Greco and Santiago Rusinol.

We also recommend a visit to the Museu Marciel. This museum houses a fantastic collection of statues, paintings, ceramics and furniture assembled by the American collector Charles Deering. The museum itself is located within a former hospital dating back to the 14th century.

The Museu Romantic in Sitges occupies the 18th century home of the very wealthy Falc and Llopis families. The museum houses a fine collection of period furniture and antique dolls.

FIESTAS IN SITGES

Sitges is becoming increasingly renowned for its dazzling and colourful festivals which are real extravaganzas. Many of the fiestas (festivals) in Sitges take place during the time of Lent.

The most recognised festival is called the Sitges Gay Carnival which is usually held in late January and early February.

Look out for the famous grand parade. The Catalan Film Festival in Sitges takes place in the autumn and is very popular.

SITGES AND THE GAY COMMUNITY

Because Sitges became fashionable with the artistic and writer set, it gained a reputation for being an open-minded and bohemian town. Now Sitges has a reputation as a popular tourist destination for gay people. There are gay bars and clubs and the gay carnival is famous throughout Europe.

The big event each year is the Sitges Pride Festival. In 2012 this event will take place over five days from Thursday the 5th of July to Monday the 9th of July.

From Barcelona: You can get there by train or by car. The easiest way is by the Spanish Railways ( RENFE ). The journey by train from Barcelona costs €4.60, and takes around 35 minutes. Direct trains leave from Passeig de Gràcia or Sants stations - from Plaça de Catalunya a change is required at Barcelona-Sants. There are four trains an hour: two fast trains and two stopping trains.

By car, there are two routes: either via the C-31 (a local road which winds its way around the cliff faces) or the C-32 (a toll motorway). The C-32 is recommended for speed and safety, however it costs around €5, while the C-31 is free.

By air, the closest international airport is Barcelona/El Prat de Llobregat(BCN) airport (Sitges is accessible by train, changing at El Prat de Llobregat). Reus/Tarragona(REU) airport is an alternative, for regional flights (Sitges is accessible by train changing at either Sant Vicenç de Calders or Vilanova i la Geltrú). Girona/Gerona (GRO) airport is 125 km away in Costa Brava.

Beaches [ edit ].

Sitges has 17 sand beaches. Four of them are in the east: the first one called Les Botigues at the beginning of the coast, next to the beaches of Castelldefels and the other three are following the coast of Garraf (Road C-31). One of them is Garraf village beach.

There are 11 beaches in the town and two to its west, which are difficult to access. All the eastern and urban beaches have flags indicating the state of the sea and most of them have quality diplomas and blue flags awarded by the European Union.

There are three main nudist beaches located in Sitges. One of which is Platja dels Balmins, the second nudist beach is Platja d'Aiguadolç, both of these beaches are populated by all members of the community. The third nudist beach is Playa del Muerto, which is more populated by the gay community. Platja dels Balmins and Platja d'Aiguadolç are located on the eastern side of Sitges while Playa del Muerto is on the western side of Sitges and is more difficult to reach.

Major events [ edit ]

 • Santa Tecla Festival . between 15th and 23rd September . One of the most important Spanish traditional festival, between 15th and 23rd September. It has been celebrated since 1321 and it has been considered of national touristic interest by Spanish government. Human towers, historical parades and fireworks are some of the main activities.
 • Carnival ( Carnestoltes ) in February and March, according to the liturgical calendar. The festivities begin on Dijous Gras, or Fat Thursday, with King Carnestoltes’ arrival. They continue until the burial of the sardine — late afternoon on Ash Wednesday. Folk dances and xatonades (traditional local salad served with assorted omelets) are also characteristic carnival elements. The two most important moments are the Rua de la Disbauxa, or the Debauchery Parade, on Sunday night and the Rua de l'Extermini, or Extermination Parade, on Tuesday night. Around 40 floats with more than 2,000 participants fill Sitges.

Hiking [ edit ]

The GR-5 (viewpoints route) starts in the city and goes through the Parc del Garraf , the Montserrat Natural Park , Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac Natural Park , the Montseny Natural Park and ends crossing the Parc del Montnegre i el Corredor in Canet de Mar

Buy [ edit ]

Local souvenirs, Catalan/Spanish music (Serrat), Spanish/Valencian music (Camilo Sesto).

In Sitges (unlike nearby Barcelona) all of the shops are allowed to open on Sundays. You will find a wide range of fashion stores around the city. Several of them carry top brands. Pedestrian streets on the city center get quite crowded on Sunday afternoons with tourists and people from Barcelona buying. Several shops open just after 17:30 and stay open until 21:00.

Eat [ edit ]

Xató is Sitges' most typical dish. The main ingredients of xató are endive salad, cod, tuna, anchovies, aubergine and black olives. However, the essence of the dish is its sauce, made with scalded chillies, toasted almonds, garlic, olive oil, salt, vinegar and hot peppers. The complete xató meal consists of some different omelettes or fricandó (a typical Catalan hot meal) and as a dessert, coca de lardons (typical Catalan cake, made from pork scratchings), served with a bottle of Penedès black wine.

In Sitges, the Hospital Sant Joan Baptista continues producing and marketing malvasia according to the traditional method from its own vines and within its own cellars. The proceeds go to charity. The annual production is approximately 4,000 bottles.

Sitges is full of history, festivals, cultural landmarks, scenic beaches, and lots of great food. This cosy town has always been popular, but has grown even more so in recent years.

It’s very LGBTQI friendly and holds a popular Sitges Pride event every year during summer. Its large and supportive gay community makes it one of the most open cities to live and travel to in the world.

How to get to Sitges

Sitges is located approximately 35 kilometres south of Barcelona. You can hire a car or take a taxi to get there in about 45 minutes from Barcelona.

But the best way to get to Sitges is by train. It's more sustainable than driving and you don't have to think about parking.

You can take the R2 SUD line in the direction of Vilanova i la Geltrú or Sant Vicenç de Calders from one of three main train stations in Barcelona. The train ride takes only 40 minutes from the centre of Barcelona, making it an ideal day trip if you are pushed for time.

How long to stay in Sitges

Sitges is a relatively small town and it can be done in one day if you plan your trip. But we recommend a longer stay if you can as you will enjoy the town much more.

When to visit Sitges

We visited Sitges in May. It wasn’t quite warm enough to swim on most days, but it was very pleasant to walk around the town and explore. If you want to hit the beaches, it’s better to time your trip in the summer months from June to September.

These are the peak months though, so expect to pay higher prices and book your preferred accommodation early. If you want to avoid the crowds, either April to May or October to November would be a good choice.

Sitges is known for its festivals and events. Most of them are during summer, but other popular events are held during the year, like the Sitges Carnival in February. Check out the list of events below to help plan your trip.

What to do in Sitges

On our last trip to Spain, we stayed in Sitges as our base to explore Barcelona and its surroundings. We were charmed by the laid-back vibe of Sitges and its beauty, and wanted to share our best things to do in Sitges with you.

1. Explore the old town on foot

Our favourite activity here is the simplest one, walking. Once you reach the old town of Sitges, driving is problematic as the roads are very narrow. If you come from the train station, you don’t have to walk far before finding yourself in the city centre and its maze of cobblestone streets.

Head towards the water and once at the esplanade, you won’t miss all the attractions. We loved walking around town in the early mornings and late afternoon, with cooler air and fewer people.

There is a main road that leads to the church with many cafes, restaurants, and some boutiques. Make sure to stop by and have a coffee with a pastry to feel more like a local.

2. Take a coastal walk along the sea

Enjoy a relaxing stroll along Passeig Maritim , the pedestrian boardwalk that connects all of the beaches located in Sitges.

You can also walk all the way from Sitges to another coastal town, Vilanova i la Geltrú . The track offers stunning sea views along the way which make it a perfect day out in nature. It's a 7 - 8 km long hike that will take you approximately three hours.

Both Sitges and Vilanova i la Geltrú have train stations. You can therefore start and finish in either of the cities and then just jump on the train that takes you to Barcelona.

3. Admire the Church of Sant Bartomeu and Santa Tecla

This Baroque-style church from the 17th century is the town's most iconic landmark. You can visit the inside of the church, but every time we were nearby it was closed.

You can contact the office on this number to find out their opening hours and celebration times. A guided tour to the bell towers can also be organised.

A composite image of the view of the Church of Sant Bartomeu & Santa Tecla from along the coastal path in Sitges

4. Wonder around the Palau de Maricel

Maricel Palace was built between 1913 and 1918 in ‘Noucentista’ architectural style. It has a very interesting history and remarkable design. It was built by the American art collector Charles Deering as his residence and a place to store his art collections.

You can see inside the palace at certain times. They also offer guided tours at some of these times. Check out this website for more information.

A composite image of the sky and front entrance of Maricel Palace in Sitges

Note the guided tours run throughout the day in three different languages: English, Catalan and Spanish. If you speak only one of these languages, you may only have one opportunity to enjoy the guided tour when visiting the palace.

If you take the guided tour like we did, you will learn all the interesting information about the history of the palace, how it was built, and why it was abandoned by Charles Deering.

5. Admire the artwork at the public museums of Sitges

Cau Ferrat Museum , also known as ‘Temple of Modernisme’, contains collections of ancient and modern works of art that the famous Spanish artist Santiago Rusenol collected during his lifetime. What we know as the museum today was the artist's home and workshop that he founded in 1893.

You will find works by Rusenol, Casas Picasso, Regoyos, and R. Pichot among other artists from that time. Rusenol's passion to organise events for artists, musicians and writers made Cau Ferrat into the museum that we know today.

You will be amazed by the exterior and the interior of this historical building.

A composite image of a room inside Cau Ferrat Museum in Sitges

The exhibitions of Maricel Museum contain works from the tenth century to realism. Most of it comes from a private collection of Dr. Jesus Perez-Rosales.

You can combine the entrance tickets for both the Cau Ferrat Museum and Maricel Museum for better value. The entrance to both museums is the same and we recommend spending at least a couple of hours at them both.

6. Relax at Biblioteca Santiago Rusenol

The influence of Santiago Rusenol in Sitges is also evidenced by this library named after him. It’s just a short stroll away from the church and art galleries.

With the sponsorship of Charles Deering, the library was designed by architect Miquel Utrillo as a residence for him and his family. Miquel Utrillo is the very same architect that designed Maricel Palace. Both were built at the beginning of the 20th century.

The Sitges library has fascinating interior design in the twentieth-century style of ‘estilo novecentista’. A highlight is a beautiful central courtyard with a fountain in the middle. If you love photography and design, you will appreciate its aesthetics.

As digital nomads, we found the library a perfect place to research the local area and work in peace. It has reliable wi-fi and quiet rooms.

It’s open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 10am - 2 pm, and on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 3:30 pm to 8 pm. It’s closed on the weekends.

7. Spend a day at one of Sitges' many beautiful beaches

Sitges' beaches are some of the best in the region. You can choose from 17 different sand beaches along its coastline!

From picturesque urban beaches like Sant Sebastià or La Fragata , to more secluded and intimate nudist and gay beaches like Playa del Muerto or Playa de los Malmins . Sitges has it all.

The water here is much cleaner than the urban beaches of Barcelona. You will find a more tranquil vibe here with picturesque mountains and colourful houses in the background.

There are also numerous beach bars and beach clubs to enjoy if you're looking for more of a party atmosphere. Hola Club Sitges , Vivero , Xiringuito , and Little Beach House Barcelona are some of the popular options available.

8. satisfy all your gastronomical needs.

There are a lot of great restaurants in Sitges! We also found it easy to find vegetarian and vegan food in Sitges.

Our favourite place was Tanto Gusto . Located next to the main beach, it’s a small cafe with the best coffee and tapas including vegetarian empanadas. They also have a great vegan lasagna that was reasonably priced for the area.

There are also three plant-based Indian restaurants in Sitges: Cinnamon , Spice Garden , and Dosa Nova . All three restaurants seem to have a really good rating online but unfortunately we didn't try them as we were looking for local food.

Sitges also has Veggie Garden , which is a vegan chain restaurant in Spain.

For the most part though, we were lucky enough to have a well-equipped kitchen at our rental accommodation. So it was cheap and easy to cook local food every day.

Mercadona is a very popular Spanish supermarket with tons of vegan options. You can get anything from vegan chorizo to vegan croquetas.

Ametller Origen is a fancier supermarket with a huge amount of vegan and vegetarian food. They had tortilla de patatas, vegan nuggets, croquettes, ‘ham’, gazpacho, and more.

Both Mercadona and Ametller are located to the right of the train station on the main road when you exit, so you won't miss them!

9. Enjoy Sitges Carnival and other cultural events in Sitges

Sitges Carnival is one of the best and wildest carnivals in Europe and even the world. For one week in the middle of winter, Sitges turns into a one-week festival where everyone is welcome to experience parades, events and 24/7 parties all over town.

In 2024 the Carnival will start on Thursday, 8th of February. The two main parades are Rua de la Disbauxa (Debauchery Parade) on Sunday night and the Rua de l’Extermini (Extermination Parade) on Tuesday night.

A similar big event in the Sitges event calendar is the Sitges Pride party in June each year. Attracting up to 60,000 people from around the world, it’s a week-long celebration with parties and festivities.

If you’re a fan of fireworks, you can’t miss the La Fiesta Mayor de Sitges . It’s an annual festival held in August every year in honour of Sant Bartomeu, the patron saint of Sitges. It runs for two weeks with the highlight being a massive fireworks display that attracts up to 200,000 people to watch the spectacle.

A composite image of some buskers on the streets of Sitges

Cinephiles should attend the Sitges Film Festival . It's been running since 1968 with a focus on horror and fantasy films. They boast an impressive list of attendees of A-list directors, producers and actors over the years, including Quentin Tarantino, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Jodie Foster, George A. Romero, Takashi Miike, Wim Wenders, David Cronenberg, Darren Aronofsky, Sam Raimi, Guillermo del Toro, and Susan Sarandon.

One of the best parts of the Sitges Film Festival is the Zombie Walk . Up to 1,000 people get dressed up and apply make up to resemble zombies. They then parade down the main street of Sitges before partying all night!

These are the highlights, but there are events all year round. Refer to this website for the latest information on what’s happening in Sitges.

10. Discover the link to Barcardi rum

If you're a rum drinker, you're undoubtedly familiar with the Bacardi brand. You might also be aware that it was founded in Cuba (bonus points if you knew this was in 1862).

What is less well-known is that the founder Facundo Bacardi was born and raised in Sitges. After following his older brothers to Cuba and working in retail, he eventually founded a distillery to produce rum.

Bacardi used to have a museum located in the old market building of Sitges to celebrate their products and this history. Unfortunately this was closed in 2021. Be warned - most articles online don't mention it's now closed!

However, you can still pay your respects to Facundo Bacardi at a monument in his honour located just off Passeig de la Ribera in front of the beach . It features the distinctive Bacardi logo perched between an enclosing circle with a pair of outstretched hands below. It was designed to look through the circle to see the hands holding up the future that lays out to sea.

11. Experience the nightlife of Sitges

The nightlife of Sitges also beckons you as the sun goes down. There are numerous LGBTQI-friendly bars, nightclubs and scenic rooftop lounges to experience.

The famous Carrer del Pecat (‘Street of Sin’) is a must-visit spot for those looking to experience it. This street is home to many LGBT-friendly bars, cocktail joints, and nightclubs that stay open until the early morning.

However, if you prefer a tamer night out, you can head to Carrer Santa Bonaventura instead. Whether you are a wild party animal or just looking for a fun night out, Sitges has plenty of options to offer.

12. Extend your visit to nearby attractions

If you have the time, there are a few places near Sitges worth visiting.

Bodegas Güell is a popular architectural complex including a winery situated near Sitges. It was designed by the famous architect Antoni Gaudí. If you're a fan of Guadi, it may be worth a visit to admire his architectural work.

Unfortunately the building is not open to the public, so it can only be admired from the outside. We managed to glimpse it through the train window when approaching Sitges from Barcelona.

There are several interesting museums in the town of Vilanova i la Geltrú . The most famous one is the Railway Museum of Catalonia . Situated in a former train station, you can see historical locomotives and associated paraphernalia.

The historic town square (Placa de la Vila) is also worth visiting. It has a beautiful Town Hall and a tourist information point. It's a great place to watch local people go about their day and soak up the atmosphere of the town.

A photo of the central plaza in Vilanova i la Geltrú, Spain

Another place of interest for history fans is Castell de la Geltru . It houses several items of interest from the 12th century.

A photo of Castell de la Geltru in Vilanova i la Geltrú, Spain

It's also worth mentioning that we had the best vegan paella that we had on our trip to Spain in Vilanova i la Geltrú at Bar Txoko . It’s a small and very authentic place.

Another option is Ecoconscient , a vegan cafe on the edge of town about 15 minutes walk from the train station. You can eat in or take away to enjoy a meal in town or at the beach. If pizza is more your style, check out La Naturale for many delicious options including vegan ones.

For those who enjoy outdoor activities, discover the breathtaking hiking trails of Garraf Park . There are nearly 13,000 hectares of limestone hills to explore with caves, potholes, and abandoned villages along the way. The Sakya Tashi Ling Buddhist Monastery built in 1905 is also located within the park.

A map of Sitges is a tourist's main attribute

The first purchase you make in the city should be a map of Sitges. Without it, it is easy to get lost in the small winding streets of the historic part of the city and the many beaches along the coast.

Not to mention the sights. The city boasts a plethora of museums. They are so distinctive that every tourist must at least pass by, so that then do not regret the trip. Sitges city map will help to get oriented in all the sights and lay the best route of walks.

The city constantly holds a lot of holidays and festivals. A cheerful and motley crowd can easily carry away. And when the wave of joy subsides, tourists usually find themselves in an unfamiliar area. In these cases, an invaluable help will be a map of Sitges in Russian. It will quickly orient you where you are and in which direction it is best to move.

A map of Sitges with hotels will serve you well. The fact is that many of them are oriented exclusively to sexual minorities. Therefore, it is always worth using a map to find a suitable place to stay.

Sitges

Sitges is a small city, so it is difficult to define the exact boundaries of its neighborhoods. However, there is some zoning. The heart of the city is Plaça Cap de la Vila. The main and popular streets of the city are arterialized from it.

Calle Jesús is frequented by surfers, as it is home to a specialized store. Calle Sant Francesc is the preferred street for shoppers. The main clothing stores are concentrated on this street.

The Calle Major area is the best place in Sitges for sightseers and history lovers. The street itself is like a work of art, with the historic part of town at the end of it. Once you get past the row of stores and summer cafes on Calle Parellades, you'll find yourself in another neighborhood in the center of Sitges that's famous for its nightlife.

It adjoins Calle Montroig, which locals have nicknamed the street of sin. This is only because it is littered with nightclubs and bars that play loud music until the wee hours of the morning. The streets near Plaça Industria are equally famous. These, of course, are not dangerous areas of Sitges, but here are concentrated places for tourists with non-traditional orientation. Some are categorically off-limits to women.

It's hard to describe Sitges' neighborhoods and not mention the coastline. In fact, the entire coastline can be divided into a separate beach area with specialized recreation areas. The coastal zone is equipped with a neat promenade, along which there are many hotels and restaurants. If you came here for the sea, the answer to the question of where to stay in Sitges is quite logical - on the coast.

But if you're interested in a luxury vacation, it makes sense to stay at the five-star Dolce Hotel in Port d'Aiguadolç. Its main street, Passeig del Port d'Aiguadolç, is shaded by palm trees and offers gorgeous views of the yachts.

Exploring Sitges, the “Saint-Tropez of Spain”

Visit Sitges Spain

Located less than one hour away from Barcelona by train or car is one of Spain’s most charming and relaxed seaside escapes: Sitges, a sunny resort town with a population of less than 30,000 people and a history stretching further back than the Middle Ages.

Derek and I spent three blissful nights in Sitges during our weeklong trip to Spain last October. Truth be told, I had never even heard of Sitges before planning this trip, and likely never would have booked a stay there were it not for the fact that our good friends invited us to attend their wedding there!

Wedding Venue Sitges Spain

But this coastal town – lovingly nicknamed the Saint-Tropez of Spain – swept us off our feet and charmed its way into our hearts. In fact, I dare say I loved it just as much as the drastically more popular Barcelona!

Maybe it was the whitewashed Mediterranean buildings accented with cobalt blue doorways and dusty gold arches, or the breezy seaside promenade line with swaying palm trees and al fresco restaurants.

Perhaps it was the many sidewalk cafes and cozy taverns tucked away down narrow alleyways, or the pleasant sea breeze and gentle sunshine that found us even in the maze of cobblestone streets.

Sitges Visitor's Guide

Most likely, it was all of the above. In more ways than one, Sitges reminded me of Trogir , another European seaside treasure known for its charm, beauty, history, good weather, and excellent seafood.

In any case, Sitges is a destination that I would highly recommend to any traveler looking to get a taste of Spain’s charming coastal towns and cities.

Things to Do in Sitges, Spain

Explore sitges on foot.

Sitges is a near-perfect example of a “walking city.” It’s small, easy to navigate, and ridiculously scenic.

Things to Do in Sitges Spain

If you want to maximize your sightseeing in Sitges, there are three main areas I recommend prioritizing:

The promenade: The place to see and be seen! Strolling up and down this waterfront boulevard is a local pastime, and one of the best ways to scope out Sitges’s world famous beaches.

Things to do in Sitges, Spain

The narrow streets behind the Church of St. Bartomeu: My favorite area for aimless wandering! The streets here are winding, hilly, and off-limits to motorized vehicles. Meander through the maze of scenic alleyways while keeping an eye out for whimsical details like colorful plaques and tiles, elegant arches, and windowsills lined with buckets of flowers.

tourist map of sitges

The heart of Sitges. If you’re after hustle and bustle (…well, relatively speaking; Sitges is still a small town, after all!) then the city center is where you’ll want to be. Don’t worry, there’s no shortage of charm here – whitewashed buildings, cobblestone streets, and plentiful sidewalk cafes are still the norm. But you’ll also find numerous bars, restaurants, taverns, gelato shops, and boutiques to keep you entertained.

Things to do in Sitges Spain

(Sitges is such a small place, that the entire town could be considered the “heart.” But if you’re looking for an exact spot to plug into your GSP, try Plaça Cap de la Vila).

Church of St. Bartomeu

Sitges is an enchanting town with beautiful architecture…which is why it may come as a surprise that there are very few real architectural “attractions” to add to your must-see list.

By far the most iconic sight in Sitges is the Church of St. Bartomeu, or the Parroquia de Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla .

Sitges Cathedral

This picturesque cathedral was built during the mid-1600s, and sits perched above the sea at the edge of town. It’s impossible to miss; you’ll be able to spot it even from far down the beach or promenade.

The area around St. Bartomeu is a hub of activity, with vendors selling beach blankets, handbags, and jewelry. Next to the church, you’ll also find a bronze statue of a mermaid, the “siren of Sitges.”

Sitges Spain Travel Guide

We found ourselves flocking to this area again and again during our time in Sitges – a sunset stroll followed by a cocktail here, a morning walk on the beach there…safe to say, it was one of our favorite pockets of this lovely city!

Beaches in Sitges

The beaches of Sitges are well-known across Europe, and once you visit it will be easy to see why.

Although beautiful, many European beaches are pebble beaches, rather than the white sand variety that most people have come to expect. While these beaches can still be lovely to visit, they’re less than ideal for barefoot strolls or picnicking on a blanket.

The beaches in Sitges, however, feature sugary white sand that stretches on as far as the eye can see. Visitors and locals alike flock to the shoreline to walk, sit, nap, play soccer, fly kites, and swim.

Platja de la Fragata is located directly next to the Church of St. Bartomeu and Club Nàutic, and was the beach we frequented the most during our stay (as it was directly in front of our Airbnb). There are no beach chairs, but it’s still quite a popular spot.

Sitges Best Beaches

La Ribera is just a bit further west, closer to the actual city center. You can rent loungers and umbrellas here, though it does tend to be the most crowded beach (not a bad thing if you want that social beach atmosphere!)

Sitges Best Beaches

Platja de Sant Sebastià is located on the opposite side of the Church of St. Bartomeu (to the east). Again, there were no umbrellas or loungers, but it was still always busy when we visited.

Sitges Best Beaches

If you’re looking for a bit more peace and solitude, other beaches in Sitges include:

 • Platja de la Barra
 • Platja de les Anquines
 • Platja de Terramar
 • Platja d’Aiguadolç

Personally, I loved spending time at the three beaches I highlighted above, and didn’t see any reason for escaping their “crowds”…the laid back social atmosphere is part of Sitges’s charm, after all!

Museums in Sitges

There are a total of five museums in Sitges, though we only visited two of them. Conveniently, they were located within the same complex!

The Museu Maricel houses a beautiful collection of Romanesque, Renaissance and Baroque paintings and sculptures. Many of the works feature buildings and landscapes in and around Sitges – it was fun to see the iconic Church of St. Bartomeu in so many historic paintings!

Sitges Museu Maricel

But the most unique and impressive room in the museum was hands-down the one containing the sculptures by Joan Rebull . Here, three gorgeous marble statues are framed by wide, arched windows featuring views of the vibrant blue sea. The result was breathtakingly dramatic and surreal – the perfect balance of art and nature.

Attached to the Museu Maricel is the Cau Ferrat , which was once the home and workshop of artist Santiago Rusiñol. There were all sorts of unique paintings, sculptures, and miscellaneous artifacts to be admired in these rooms.

Best Things to do in Sitges, Spain

Had I been able to visit one additional museum in Sitges, I absolutely would have chosen the Palau Maricel . The architecture, courtyards, and artwork contained within this palace look absolutely magical! The remaining two museums are the Museu Romantic and La Fundació Stämpfli , which houses a contemporary art collection.

Casa Bacardí Sitges

…Huh? Bacardí in Sitges?

Although the famed rum brand is typically associated with the Caribbean – usually Puerto Rico or Cuba – the founder, Don Facundo Bacardí, was actually born in Sitges!

At Casa Bacardí Sitges you can take a guided tour of the facilities, learn about the history of Bacardí rum, taste cocktails, and even join a mixology class led by professional bartenders.

As we were already feeling a bit hungover after all the wedding festivities, Derek and I gave this attraction a miss. But in any other scenario, I would have visited in a heartbeat.

Where to Eat in Sitges, Spain

Spain is a world-class foodie destination, although I wouldn’t fault you for not expecting much out a small resort town like Sitges. That said, you’d be wrong!

We ate like kings and queens during our time in Sitges, and we savored every delicious moment of it.

Patatas bravas! Pinxtos! Chorizo! Seafood! Duck! Cava, sangria, and wine!

I’m practically salivating at the thought of it all 🤤 Below is my personal “must eat” list for anyone lucky enough to spending a day or more in Sitges:

Tapas at Bar El Cable: If you only have time to eat at one restaurant in Sitges, make it this local hotspot. Originally founded in 1940, El Cable has been awarded Best Tapa of Sitges on multiple occasions, as well as Best Tapa of Catalonia in 2013. It can get crowded, so arrive early (we snagged a spot right when it opened, at 7:00pm sharp).

Where to Eat in Sitges

The dishes that we tried and can vouch for are:

 • “Finding Nemo” – tuna tartare with roe
 • “Duck Nest” – duck confit with fries
 • Patatas Bravas – spicy potatoes, a Spanish staple
 • Garlic mushrooms
 • Fried calamari (full disclosure, this dish wasn’t really anything special and was definitely our least favorite of the bunch)

Pinxtos at Eguzki and/or El Donostiarra: While tapas may be Spain’s most iconic variety of “small bites,” pinxtos ended up being our favorite culinary discovery. Essentially, these are small slices of bread topped with all sorts of delicious meats, cheeses, spreads, sauces and veggies, which are held in place with a toothpick or skewer. There are endless tasty combinations, like brie, prosciutto and caramelized onions; chorizo and shishito; or mascarpone with fruit jam and honey. Mmmmm .

Sitges El Donostiarra

Drinks at one of the waterfront restaurants: All sorts of eateries line the seaside promenade, beckoning hungry patrons with their shady terraces and flamboyant signage. However, I recommend sticking to liquid libations only at these waterfront establishments; in our experience, the food tended to be pricier but not as good here. Definitely stop in for a cappuccino, sangria, or cava and enjoy the view, though!

Visiting Sitges Spain

Where to Stay in Sitges, Spain

Airbnb: Being the loyal fans of Airbnb that we are, we rented a lovely little apartment right near the waterfront with views of the church. We truly couldn’t have picked a more perfect location if we had tried, and the views were so dreamy. At $100 per night, it was incredible value!

( Pssst – get $40 off your first booking! )

Sitges Travel Guide

Hotel MiM Sitges : Sleek, stylish and contemporary, this highly rated hotel is a favorite among travelers who visit Sitges. The rooftop bar and pool area looks phenomenal!

Calipolis : Located just a block away from the MiM, Calipolis is another centrally located hotel with excellent ratings. It has bright and modern rooms, many of which feature ocean views!

“Can I take a day trip to Sitges from Barcelona, or should I spend the night there?”

At just 45 minutes away from Barcelona by car or train, Sitges no doubt makes for a pretty perfect day trip.

But do I recommend spending the night if you have time for it? Yes, absolutely!

Day trips are so much fun, and a great way to stretch your time budget and maximize the number of places you can explore during your trip.

But spending the night in those cities and towns that most travelers only spend a few hours visiting allows you to connect more deeply with the destination, and discover hidden gems that the majority of people will never see.

Ultimately, the choice is yours – whether you opt for a day trip, or end up spending three nights (like we did!) I have no doubt that this sparkling jewel of a city will cast its spell of enchantment upon you.

Let the sound of the sea wash over you as you stroll along, a light salty breeze blowing in your face. Why not sit down in one of the cafes overlooking the sea and enjoy an ice-cold beer or another typical Spanish drink while you watch the hustle and bustle of the visitors?

Sitges Beaches

With 17 great beaches on the Costa del Garraf , Sitges is considered one of the most popular beach resorts in the region. For this reason, you should not miss the beaches of Sitges during your visit.

In addition to the city beaches, which might get crowded, especially during the summer, outside the city center, there are also a few great options for a little beach trip.

The city beaches Platja de Sant Sebastià and Platja de la Ribera are popular spots for locals and visitors alike. For those who like it a little quieter, the beaches Platja del Terramar or Platja dels Balsmins , which are a little further out, are sure to be the right choice.

Plaza del Ayuntamiento

Plaza del Ayuntamiento is one of the most symbolic squares in the city. The main attraction in this square is the town hall building from the 19th century.

For locals, the plaza in the city center is a popular meeting place. During the warmer months, events such as the popular Catalan Castellers (human towers) are regularly held here.

Planning a trip as an LGBTQ+ couple can sometimes feel like navigating a minefield. While the world becomes increasingly accepting, finding destinations that truly embrace and celebrate your identity can be challenging.

We consulted the research by the experts from Emisil.com to make a list of LGBTQ+-friendly cities that are also great travel destinations. Emisil’s experts have scored each city out of 10 based on factors like safety index, same-sex marriage acceptance, and prevalence of gender recognition laws. Besides, these cities have multiple queer-friendly clubs and celebrations to enjoy.

Portugal is the cheapest country to live in Western Europe.
