First off, don't rely on public WiFi. What if your hotel room has a weak signal? Are you gonna stand on the hallway to upload a photo? Public WiFi is often slow and there is no guarantee. Also be aware that a public WiFi connection is are through an UNSECURED network. The use of a VPN in these cases is very much recommended.

Being connected to the internet makes traveling so much easier. Think about ordering a taxi through an app, looking for a nearby rooftop bar or restaurant with good reviews or getting directions from Google Maps. There are many reasons I can come up with for you to stay connected when traveling to Poland. Buying a prepaid sim card in Poland is easy, done fast and you are instantly connected, just as getting an e-sim card for Poland.

You don't like to swap sim cards and switch phone numbers? There are two solutions for you. You can look into  getting WiFi on the road through a pocket WiFi , the old school way or get yourself an e-sim card for Poland.

My recommendation

Poland prepaid sim cards and EU data roaming

As of 2017 the EU banned international roaming fees within the European Union. Therefore data, voice and text allowance on a Poland prepaid sim card should be free to use in every other EU country. But wait...

Poland mobile internet operators asked the European Commission to not be part of the free EU data roaming agreement. This request has been honored by the European Commission, due to the very low prices for mobile internet in Poland.

That said, since 2024 a lot of Poland prepaid sim cards are allowing some data for use in the EU. Always ask for the EU roaming restrictions when buying a prepaid sim card in Poland and you are traveling onwards to other countries.

So be careful as some prepaid sim cards from Poland are USELESS for a trip to Europe. I tried it out myself and my Poland sim card did indeed NOT work in Norway and later that week neither in Spain.

A prepaid sim card from Poland is not recommended for traveling in Europe as there are a lot of EU data roaming restrictions. So just to test this out on my last trip to Poland I bought the cheapest T-Mobile Poland sim card I could find. For 5 Zloty ($1.2) I got 1 GB data in Poland and in Europe.

In Poland it worked perfectly fine, but just an hour after I landed in Oslo my Orange Poland sim card then kept on saying: insufficient funds while I still had credit and data leftover.

All the above mobile internet providers sell prepaid sim cards for tourists. Unfortunately as of February 2024 the mobile internet operators in Poland do not provide e-sim cards, tourists can only get a physical prepaid sim card in phone stores in Poland.

Where to buy a sim card for Poland

International airport on arrival.

Most intercontinental flights to Poland arrive in Warsaw and the most convenient place to buy a prepaid sim card for Poland is straight away on arrival at Chopin Airport in Warsaw. Luckily it is easy to buy a prepaid sim card at Warsaw Airport Chopin. There are several phone shops in the arrival hall and you can also get sim cards from the Relay and the Starter convenient store.

Phone stores city center

Everywhere around the city center of the main tourist destinations in Poland you can find stores of the mobile internet providers. The easiest way to find one is to use Google Maps and located the nearest one to your hotel. Otherwise another great place to buy a sim card in Poland is a shopping mall, where you will always find mobile phone stores from Orange, Play, T-Mobile or Plus.

Local prepaid sim cards can only be bought on arrival in Poland, but if you want to arrive prepared in Poland and be online as the plane lands then check out buying a sim card for Poland on the internet.

Best 4G/5G network in Poland in 2024

The best sim card for traveling in Poland is not only determined by the price for data packages. Let's also look into the 4G and 5G network strength and data speed. Imagine you take the bus from Warsaw to Gdansk and as soon as you leave the city you have no phone signal anymore. That is not what we want!

Is there 5G in Poland?

Yes, there is 5G in Poland. All the 4 mobile internet providers offer 5G. However, the 5G coverage differs per operator, see the coverage maps below. Poland is working hard to bring 5G all over the country. Check the Poland 4G/5G coverage maps for more details.

Although the above mobile data network coverage maps are updated for 2024 they are not 100% accurate. However, they are a great reference to compare the 4G/5G networks of the mobile internet providers in Poland in 2024.

From the above collected data Traveltomtom comes to the conclusion that Orange and T-Mobile have the best 4G/5G network in Poland in 2024.

In general, the mobile network coverage in Poland is so extensive that even tourists that go off the beaten path in Poland will find a 4G/LTE signal almost everywhere regardless which sim card they use.

Prices Poland sim cards in 2024

All mobile internet providers in Poland have a strong 4G/5G network in the main tourist destinations in Poland so let's compare the prices for prepaid sim card plans.

All the prices below are in Polish Zloty and up to date as per February 2024 with the latest information from the websites of the mobile internet providers. As per February 2024 the exchange rate is: 1 PLN = $ 0.25 USD and $1 USD = 4.00 PLN.

An Orange prepaid sim card is free if you get one of the following prepaid plans. All data plans include unlimited calls/text in Poland and Europe as well as free social media apps and are valid for 30 days:

• 30 GB data + free social media apps in Poland = 30 PLN ($7.5 USD)
• 45 GB data + free social media apps in Poland = 35 PLN ($8.7 USD)
• 80 GB data + free social media apps in Poland = 50 PLN ($12.5 USD)
• 150 GB data + free social media apps in Poland = 80 PLN ($20 USD)

Big advantage about an Orange Poland prepaid sim card is that they are all 5G ready. From my comparison you will see that this is not the case for all mobile internet operators in Poland. You can only opt for a physical prepaid sim card, e-sim cards for tourists are not available in Orange stores.

*3.48 GB EU data roaming included. **4.18 GB EU data roaming included. ***6.96 GB EU data roaming included. ****11.14 GB EU data roaming included. Check the latest Orange Poland sim card offers on the Orange Poland website .

A Plus Poland sim card costs 5 ZL ($1.20) and comes with 6 GB data and unlimited calls/sms in Poland valid for 15 days. They offer a wide variety of top up data packages:

• 30 GB data in Poland for 30 days = 25 ZL ($6.2 USD)
• 40 GB data in Poland for 30 days = 30 ZL ($7.5 USD)
• 50 GB data in Poland for 30 days = 50 ZL ($12.5 USD)

Just the top up for example with 30 PLN ($7 USD) will already give you 15 GB bonus and then 15 GB from the package = 30 GB. Then on your first month you get another 200 GB for free and on top of that you can opt for another 1,500 GB data extra.

Unfortunately Plus does not mention anything about EU roaming, neither is it completely clear when you can access the 5G network and when not. But from what I understand when buying one of the 3 above prepaid sim card plans is that you can use the 5G network.

Check the Plus Poland website  for the latest prepaid sim card deals or more info. You can only opt for a physical prepaid sim card, e-sim cards for tourists are not available in Plus stores.

There is a T-Mobile prepaid sim card for already 5 ZL ($1.2 USD) which comes with 1 GB data + unlimited calls and sms in Europe for 5 days. Then you can top up with one of the T-Mobile prepaid plans for 30 days:

• 25 GB data for 30 days = 25 PLN ($6.2 USD)
• 30 GB data for 30 days = 30 PLN ($7.5 USD)
• 40 GB data + 100 GB bonus for 30 days = 35 PLN ($8.7 USD)
• 60 GB data + 100 GB bonus and 5G network ready for 30 days = 45 PLN  ($11.2 USD)

If you top up your T-Mobile prepaid sim card you already get bonus data. For example a top up with 20 PLN ($5 USD) gets you 5 GB data for 5 days bonus extra.

Also on the  T-Mobile Poland website  there is no mention of free EU roaming with the prepaid sim card plans. You can only opt for a physical prepaid sim card, e-sim cards for tourists are not available in T-Mobile stores.

The last option for buying a Poland prepaid sim card is Play. The Play prepaid sim cards come with unlimited calls/sms in Europe however, data is only valid in Poland.

• 10 GB data in Poland for 30 days = 25 ZL ($6.2 USD)
• 15 GB data in Poland for 30 days = 30 ZL ($7.5 USD)
• Unlimited GB (20 GB full speed) data in Poland for 30 days = 35 ZL ($8.7 USD)

Best sim card for Poland in 2024

International prepaid sim cards and e-sim cards are great alternatives for staying connected when traveling to Poland. The prices for e-sim cards for Poland became very competitive and for $13 USD you get 10 GB data and it is the easiest way to get connected when traveling to Poland.

So is this the best sim card for traveling to Poland in 2024? Well, this depends on the type of traveler you are and of course if your phone is e-sim compatible.

E-sim cards are without a doubt the easiest way to stay connected on your trip to Poland in 2024. Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for Poland via Airalo , SimOptions or Nomad .

If you really want to find the cheapest way to get connected when traveling to Poland then you have to buy a local prepaid sim card in Poland on arrival. Especially for those who use a lot of data buying a local prepaid sim card in Poland is a great solution and not expensive.

Orange includes free social media apps, which is a big plus compared to the other operators. Another big advantage about an Orange Poland prepaid sim card is that is clearly stated how much data you can use in the EU.

Personally Traveltomtom recommends the Bouygues Telecom or the Orange sim card with 30 GB data. I have used these physical prepaid sim cards a lot in the past and never had an issue.

But as mentioned many times before when traveling to Europe or Poland nowadays I always use an e-sim card. It is just so easy and done fast and as soon as the plane touches the ground you are online.

My experience buying a sim card in Poland

A couple years ago on my trips to Poland I always used to buy a prepaid sim card in either an Orange or a T-Mobile store. I mostly traveled overland to Poland and in the first place I would stay overnight I would go to a store.

It is not easy to find staff that speaks English, but luckily I also speak fluent German so that helps. If you are English speaking then be prepared to use Translate in store and it can be a bit challenging.

In general buying a local prepaid sim card in Poland is easy, but most of all cheap and you get a lot of data.

That said, just to save time on my last trip I visited Krakow for a couple days and simply got myself an e-sim card from Airalo with 10 GB data for just $13 USD. You arrange everything within a couple minutes on the internet and as soon as the plane lands you are online.

While doing my research for the  best prepaid sim cards to travel in Europe  I already found out that Poland has an exception within the EU data roaming regulations. Free data roaming in Europe is the best invention since the Euro, but always ask if data roaming in the EU is included and if there are limitations when buying a sim card in Poland.

Visiting Poland soon? Make sure to know what to expect when it comes to purchasing a Poland SIM card .

In this guide, we’ll explain where to buy a SIM card in Poland in person and online. We’ll also discuss prepaid SIM cards and eSIMs if your mobile supports them.

That said, if you’re traveling to other countries in Europe, you should be able to use the same SIM card because most SIM card providers also offer coverage in other European countries.

Before you read this guide, you may wonder if you actually need a SIM card in Poland. If you don’t mind not having Internet, you’ll likely find free Wifi in restaurants, shopping malls, and hotels.

That said, if you need data to get around, call an Uber, or translate Polish – you may want to get a SIM card for your travels in Poland.

Note that your mobile phone provider may already offer Polish coverage if you’re European. If that’s the case, you won’t need a SIM card for your adventures in Poland.

Best SIM Cards In Poland

If you’re traveling in Poland, we recommend using a SIM card from Plus, T-Mobile, Orange, or Airalo. (I’ll get back to Airalo later on, so keep reading to learn more!)

That said, if you’re planning on visiting other countries during your trip to Europe, you might want to make sure to pick an option that offers coverage in other European countries.

How To Buy A SIM Card In Poland

You can buy a Europe prepaid SIM card in person in some international airports, mobile provider stores, convenience stores, or online.

Usually, you can expect higher costs and low data offers at the airport, so we don’t recommend buying a SIM card at the airport.

That said, you won’t necessarily find SIM card shops in every airport, so it’s essential to keep this in mind. And, when you see a shop, you might also have limited options.

For this reason, I’d recommend buying a SIM card directly from the mobile provider store. Note that you may need your passport to buy one.

Although, this means you won’t get data right upon your arrival. So, if you prefer to be connected at all times, you could use an eSIM or purchase a European prepaid SIM card online.

Now, let’s take a look at the data plans offered by Plus, T-Mobile, and Orange.

Plus SIM Cards

Plus offers two different types of plans:

• 30 GB, 30 days for PLN 30 ($5.99)
• 35 GB, 30 days for PLN 45 ($7.99)

As a visitor, both are good options, even if you are staying less than 30 days.

T-Mobile SIM Cards

T-Mobile has 2 main prepaid plans available:

• Unlimited L:30 days, 40 GB of data for PLN 39 ($7.79)
• Unlimited XL: 30 days, 35 GB of data for PLN 35 ($6.99)

As you can see, it’s more expensive than Plus, but you also get more data, which can be helpful.

Orange SIM Cards

Orange offers the following deals for prepaid SIM customers:

• 15 GB, 4.23 GB while roaming in EU, 30 days for 25 PLN ($4.99)
• 30 GB, 5.18 GB while roaming in EU, 30 days for 30 PLN ($5.99)
• 45 GB, 6.04 GB while roaming in EU, 30 days for 35 PLN ($6.99)
• 80 GB, 8.63 GB while roaming in EU, 30 days for 50 PLN ($9.98)

Overall, we think T-Mobile is the best option if you plan to buy your SIM card in person. That said, any would do if you can’t find their store!

How To Buy A Poland Prepaid SIM Card Online

If you wish to have your SIM card ready for your arrival, you could purchase it online or on websites like Amazon.

You’ll find different plans on Amazon. For example, the Orange Holiday Europe Prepaid SIM Card works in more than 30 countries and gives you 20BG of data for 14 days. Poland is included.

But there are many other options worth considering, so have a look and ensure the countries you plan to visit are listed.

However, most cellular providers, especially in the US, have high roaming charges that add up quickly, making the cost of staying connected too high for most. However, this is of no concern when visiting Poland! 

Poland has a fantastic telecommunications sector with cheap and fast internet widely available for both locals and visitors alike. SIM cards are the easiest way to get access to the Internet while visiting some of the many amazing places in Poland. The best part is that you can easily customize packages to your needs, and they will remain cost-effective, as good competition has lowered prices greatly for consumers! Getting a SIM card in Poland will also allow you to pay less for data in other countries under the EU roaming data laws! 

This article holds 5 of the best SIM cards a tourist or expat can buy in Poland, with the 5 th choice being an E-SIM you can buy before you arrive in Poland! There will be general information about the services provided, as well as the costs of various packages available. Additionally, I have included information on why having a SIM card is worthwhile, where to buy them for the best price, and how to install them, but also advise if you are not able to get a SIM card. 1. Play/Virgin Mobile

Virgin Mobile Website | Play Website  

Details: Play and Virgin Mobile are two separate companies that offer SIM cards, but as they undergo a lot of their operations together, I will consider them as the same. I have been using a Virgin Mobile SIM card via Play since I arrived in Poland in September of 2022, and I have been very happy with the service provided. The price is good, the internet is fast, and the management of the account is super easy. I bought my Virgin Mobile SIM card in a convenience store at the airport and had it set up in less than 5 minutes. Set-up involves entering an activation code dialed into the phone, and then you will be all good to go.  

Once you have the SIM card activated, you will be able to upgrade your service from the first starting pack by adding money to your account. This can be done easily with Apple Pay, or if you have a Polish bank account, using BLIK. Then, if you have the proper amount of funds in your account at the end of the billing month (usually the 24th), your package will be auto-renewed. Even if you are in a different country outside the EU and have your data off, the package will still be auto-renewed, which is very convenient if you plan to travel a lot. 

So, what is the difference between Play and Virgin Mobile? From my experience, Play may require you to sign a longer contract of a year for the best deals on data, while with Virgin Mobile, you can choose your package as you go, month by month, based on what you need. So, Play may be better suited for someone staying long-term like an expat, while Virgin Mobile would be perfect for more temporary stays. 

What is convenient about both is that the easily downloadable Play24 Mobile Application will help you manage your account for both Play and Virgin Mobile. The app is nice because part of it is available in English, so you will just have to learn a few Polish words. Additionally, you can easily add funds through the app for future payments. You can also buy more phone minutes, texts, and extra GBs if you are going over your monthly allowance. Here you can also buy extra roaming data for the EU, the UAE, and a bunch of places around the world if you want. 

However, the most important part is whether the Internet works and is fast. I have traveled all over Poland since I arrived, and I have yet to find a major city where the Internet is slow. The Internet even works in places in the middle of nowhere at great speeds. Additionally, you can still connect to other Polish networks in places where the Virgin Mobile or Play networks are slow or unavailable for no charge.  

Are there downsides? There are a few: 

• The roaming capabilities are limited. You only can use roaming for a certain amount of your allotted gigabytes for free, and even then, the amount does not replenish at the end of each month. But extra data is not super expensive if you need it.  
• I could not get the SIM card to work in Germany if you plan to do any traveling outside of Poland with the Polish SIM card. I think that was more a problem with German telecommunication companies constraining the internet of non-German SIM cards more than anything else (from what I have found they limit data to a mind-numbingly slow 128 kbps, which is still technically legal by EU standards).  

But, other than that, I highly recommend this SIM card for whatever your need is.  

Packages and Costs:  

All packages offered are in the table below. The SIM card itself should cost 5 PLN. I use the Giga Daje package because although I could spend 5 PLN more to get double the data, I have never come close to using 15 GB in a month, so I find there is no point in the large packages. However, if you are constantly on the go, or need to work on trains or buses across Poland, or are a digital nomad, the larger packages are worth the money! The best part about the packages below is that they are all paid for on a month-by-month basis.

**Note that all packages of roaming data are valid for 14 days upon activation.  

Details: Of the SIM cards on this list, Plus is the other one I have used. I used Plus for my first-ever 2-week visit to Poland back in May of 2022. I was happy with what Plus provided at the time. The only reason I did not use Plus again was because it was not available in the store where I bought my current SIM card. The two main advantages of Plus compared to Play & Virgin Mobile were that set-up was as easy as inserting the SIM card, and then I was good to go, and that the initial fee for the SIM card included 2 weeks of complementary data.  

The Plus SIM card also worked well anywhere I traveled in Poland and provided very high internet speeds for download, upload, and streaming. Additionally, it was easy to manage the SIM card online, but they also have an app that can be used for this purpose. The main difference with Plus is that you can also buy a certain amount of GB that lasts for differing amounts of time, not just set packages that expire at the end of each month. This can allow for greater flexibility if you are looking for it.  

All in all, for the easiest set-up process, Plus might be the best choice for you. Just be warned that some packages may involve phone number activation, but the instructions are very easy to follow. Just look for the green numbers next to a green icon and enter those numbers into your phone dial for easy activation.

As with many of the SIM card providers in Poland, they also offer super high amounts of GB per month if you sign certain contracts, including amounts of up to 4800 GB. I would not select such a promotion without going to a physical store and talking to a real person about the requirements of such packages. Unless you want a lot of data, the monthly packages are good deals.  

Details: Orange is one of the most popular providers of telecommunication services in Poland. They provide Internet, Television, and other services for individual clients and large businesses. You will see bright orange SIM card packages in every place you can buy them, and they have kiosks in almost every mall. They also have their app, available in English, and an easy payment and activation process.  

What are the two main downsides of Orange compared to the other providers already mentioned? Firstly, Orange is the company most likely to sell you services you do not need if you visit a kiosk. Thus, I recommend buying the SIM card at a location other than Orange Kiosks and doing the activation and account set-up yourself. Secondly, the packages offered have a lower level of flexibility. While other companies have different amounts of GBs available for the same number of days, for SIM cards, Orange offers set amounts of GBs for certain days.  

However, if you are looking for higher amounts of GB per month, Orange is probably the most cost-effective with using a SIM card. Also, if you are looking to stay long-term and have TV and Wi-Fi at home, packaging with an Orange SIM card may save you a lot of money. So, consider Orange if you are in these categories. Visit this specific page for English-language help.  

Orange only offers packages, which are listed below. Top-ups do not seem available. If you go over, you will automatically be charged for the 10 PLN in 10 days package until your data package expires.  

As you will notice in the packages, roaming is not super high, so if you plan to travel a lot, paying for a higher-level package is worth it so that you do not have to pay extra for roaming. It will save you money even if you are only traveling for 2 weeks, to get a 30-day package.  

4. T-Mobile

Details: If you are looking for a familiar American cellular service provider in Europe, T-Mobile is the best (and really only) one available in Poland. They also provide one of the largest arrays of packages and the prestige of using the T-Mobile 5G network. Additionally, they offer special services for people who might want to use their phone mostly for calls rather than the Internet, and some of the most exorbitant packages you can imagine if you are willing to commit for an entire year. 

As with the other packages on this list, you can buy these packages at many stores across Poland, activate them easily using a phone code, and pay for packages using their T-Mobile application. They have great online help on the website for every service (it was one of the easiest websites to find the information I was looking for to write this article) and offer a ton of different incentives and bonuses.  

In my opinion, T-Mobile is the best choice if you want the fastest Internet speeds, the most flexible lengths of contracts, and the familiarity of an American company (if you are an American reading this).  

T-Mobile offers a huge array of Internet packages that also include texting and calls. They are listed below. Note that the packages that are labeled with “+calls” have a longer account validity for solely the purpose of taking calls, but not using the Internet. So, if you want your account to be valid longer than you are planning to stay in Poland for calling purposes in the EU, this is the package to choose.  

Without buying a package myself, I am unsure of what price you will pay within the price range. I think it will depend on the amount of roaming you want, as well as maybe how many devices you get to use it. Also, all GBs you buy are not lost once your package expires, they roll over to the next period if you renew one.  

The final service of interest is related to those of you who may come to Poland from time to time! For a small fee of 30 PLN, you can keep your SIM Card active and validated for an entire year without having to pay to have a package included. This is great if you want to keep your phone number for the EU, but want to extensively travel somewhere else, maybe back home or in a non-EU country. 

Details: When you choose to buy a SIM card, you must go through the process of removing your current SIM card and replacing it with a new one. One way to avoid this is to buy an E-SIM card. These versions of SIM cards function the same as a normal SIM card, accepting they are installed directly onto your device. You can also have multiple e-SIMs on one device. Added advantages of E-SIMs are that they can be tracked if your phone is stolen, and you do not need to worry about storing your old SIM card until you want to re-install it. 

e-SIMs are offered by a variety of carriers, but by far the most comprehensive provider of e-SIM cards is Airalo offers both packages for specific countries and entire regions. So, you can get one just for use in Poland, or one for use all over Europe if you plan to do more extensive traveling. All of this can be done through the app at home before you arrive, or after you arrive using Wi-Fi connectivity, in just a few moments. You can also keep the same phone number as you travel, which is perhaps the best quirk! 

All in all, Airalo is the best choice for convenience, and for those of you who may be traveling more extensively and want the flexibility of being able to buy multiple SIM cards at once. The one downside is that the costs are a little bit more expensive, which will be covered in the next section.  

When choosing Airalo, you can choose a Poland package or a Europe package. The Polish packages are listed in the 1 st table, and the Europe packages are listed in the 2 nd table. 

Why buy SIM cards in Poland?

You are likely to have found this article because you were already considering buying a SIM Card when coming to Poland. But, if you are not already convinced, below are 6 reasons you should get one of the best SIM cards for Poland on this list. 

• The low prices : Poland, compared to other countries in Europe, is relatively a budget destination . As you may have noticed in the prices of the SIM cards above, this is no exception. And, since Internet speeds in Poland are extremely fast, and all companies have access to the high wireless speeds, the companies must compete in price. Thus, you will pay a low price no matter which SIM card you choose! 
• Take advantage of roaming : Are you planning to travel to other countries in the European Union? If you arrive in Poland first, you can take advantage of the EU laws on roaming data! By law, you can access data networks in other countries using your SIM card bought in Poland without paying extra fees or having to get a new SIM Card! My only warning is I have yet to get a SIM Card to work in Germany (I believe they may make the Internet so slow that you are forced to pay for the much more expensive German SIM Card). It also only works in EU countries, so not the UK for example.  
• For communication : While you are still able to call emergency numbers without a SIM card in Poland, if you want to keep in touch with friends, family, or other people you are meeting with, having a SIM Card is the best way to stay in touch! Especially if you have a reservation somewhere and you are running late, having a SIM card will allow you to connect and change your plans on the go.  
• For translation purposes : Let’s face it, the Polish language is very hard! I have been studying it for almost 16 months, and I still have only learned a small percentage of the language. While most restaurants, hotels, and tourist sites will have signage in English, being able to translate on the go can be very useful, especially if you are going to a more rural setting.  
• To navigate : Poland has amazing public transportation in all its major cities, and even smaller cities and villages usually have train and bus connections to larger regional hubs. With access to the Internet, you can easily take advantage of this great, low-cost system, and save lots of money on transport costs! Or, if you would prefer to rent a car , it can be used to help your passengers find the nearest restaurant or petrol station. Finally, it is useful for safety! With a SIM card, you can use apps like Uber and Bolt and get a guaranteed rate on a taxi and be able to get safely home at night (But a reminder that Poland is very safe !). 
• For work or social media : If you are a digital nomad or chronically online, having constant access to the Internet can be very useful. Especially if you plan to spend time on trains between destinations, which typically do not have Wi-Fi, and if they do it is very slow, you will want a connection. Some of the packages provide you with more than enough data for needs related to this! A SIM card is your key to staying connected to Poland’s fast Internet and thus to your followers or co-workers.  

Where can I buy a SIM card in Poland?

Firstly, if you are choosing to buy an E-SIM card, you will do the entire process online. Thus, you can have a SIM card ready to activate as soon as you land at your destination in Poland, or as soon as you cross the border by train, car, or bus. Otherwise, there are two main places you can buy a SIM card. 

At a mall : Poland loves their malls. Warsaw has at least a dozen malls of varying sizes, and each one will have a phone provider listed above. They will mostly be selling phone planes but will also sell SIM cards. This might be an especially good choice for ex-pats, as it is easier to set up a long-term contract at one of these storefronts than online or elsewhere. In most cases, the staff should speak English well enough to help you out, and if not, there is always more than one choice in each mall.   

However, I do not recommend this choice. From what I have heard, the employees in the mall are all too eager to try to get you to pay for much more than you need, and the chance of paying a foreigner tax is much higher, especially if you cannot speak any Polish. Mostly, they will try to get you onto a long-term contract by advertising it as cheaper. So, be prepared, and be firm in what you want, and you will ultimately be fine.  

Additionally, I recommend trying one of the smaller malls. The malls in the center of the city, such as Arkadia or Złote Tarasy are much more likely to try to up sale you, as more foreigners shop at these malls than other ones. Try a smaller mall to avoid issues such as these. But, in general, you should not have any problems, you just might as some people I know have.  

Recommended – A corner store : This is by far the best choice. It is quick, you do not have to talk to anyone, you avoid the sales pitch of long-term contracts, and you will not have to wait in line. At actual phone company shops, you are likely to get stuck behind people who are asking lots of questions about their contracts, how phones work, or other things, and the wait may be too long, especially if you are only coming to Poland for a short time. At a corner store, you should not have such problems.  

My recommended store is Żabka. Żabka is a store that can be found almost anywhere in Poland, with dozens in each large city (if not hundreds), and they can even be found in tiny villages in the middle of nowhere. Every Żabka will have a rack of SIM cards bought from the cashier, and all the SIM cards listed above can be found in a Żabka. Just look for the green logo and enter! The odds are you are not too far from your closest Żabka. Otherwise, consider a corner store such as Carrefour Express , but I would not trust any non-name-brand stores.

Tips for buying and installing SIM cards

Once you have decided to buy a SIM Card, and picked the place where you will buy it, there are some other important things to know before you buy and install the SIM Card. Find out three very important things below.  

• Bring your passport : Without your passport, you will not be able to activate your SIM Card! This is due to laws in Poland about registering the SIM Card to a user, and since you are likely not a Polish citizen, your passport is the best identification document available for this purpose. So, do not be surprised as you checkout that you will hear the cashier ask “paszport” after they scan. At this point, hand them your passport with the main page open, so that they can enter all your information, and then the SIM Card will be fully ready to go! 
• Have a SIM card tool : If you are planning to buy your SIM card at a convenience store, you will have to install the SIM card yourself. So, make sure you have a tool that will allow you to remove your current SIM card and install the one you just bought. There are SIM tools that can be bought online for a low price. A safety pin or paper clip can work as a good alternative for removing the SIM Card tray. A plastic bag is also useful for holding your old SIM Card if you are planning to change back after your trip. Don’t forget most providers will remove you from your phone number after 30 days! 
• Translate before installment : To no surprise, the information on the package for the SIM card you buy will not be in Polish. Thus, it is best to translate what is on the package before starting the process to install, so that you understand fully what to do! In my experience, if you are still at the store while making the change (or at the airport), the staff should be able to tell you what to do to install it. But, be prepared for some translation! 
• Top-ups are on you : For all SIM cards in Poland, after the first 15 days (about 2 weeks) of the package is up, your phone will at once stop working. It is up to you to download the proper app and upload funds to activate the SIM card. You may have to do this anyway to get your phone to work, as with Play, Orange, or Virgin Mobile (and maybe by now Plus).

• Rejestracja : Registration 
• Aktywacja Kodem : Code for Activation

What if I cannot buy a SIM card in Poland?

As in the case with some people’s phone planes, you are not allowed to remove your SIM card on pain of death. So, maybe you do not want to pay the exorbitant daily prices to use your phone in Europe (in most cases, the same price per day as 2 months of data in Poland). Is it possible to get by in Poland without data connections? In my opinion, it is possible, but you must be willing to both plan certain things and be flexible. As someone who spent almost 4 months living in Lisbon, Portugal without a data plan, and traveled through European cities on solo trips, I know it is possible. Here are my tips and tricks below. 

• Download Google Maps offline : Yes, this is possible! Just go into the Google Maps app, go to your account settings (by clicking on your profile picture in the search bar at the top right), and select “offline maps.” From here, you will be able to select an area to download, which will download every street, and every attraction, restaurant, and business in the area. The only downside is that you only get driving directions, but it is still useful for walking navigation! 
• Download Google Translate offline :  In the same process for Google Maps, you can download an entire language on the Google Translate app. Just follow the same steps above, except click “downloaded languages” and then select the language you want to download. You will be able to translate every word you see on a menu, sign, or other. 
• Know your surroundings before you travel : Are you someone who needs to use the bathroom at a moment’s notice? Do you want to use public transport? Without data, you will need to search for these things before leaving your hotel, or other location with Wi-Fi. Having a document of some sort with basic information about buses, trains, trams, metros, or others can be very useful. But do not be afraid to ask locals for help if you are lost, in most big cities younger people will speak English as well as Polish! 
• Have screenshots of tickets : Have you bought tickets in advance for a museum, or maybe train tickets? If they are on your phone, make sure to screenshot them in advance if you are not planning to have access to data. Especially on trains, the ticket inspectors will have no sympathy if you cannot access your ticket in your email because of a lack of internet access. Be prepared! 
• Take advantage of free Wi-Fi spots : Need to check some information? There are always places in Polish cities where you can get access to Wi-Fi. While most restaurants in Poland will not have public Wi-Fi access, every coffee shop, fast food restaurant, mall, and some museums will have free Wi-Fi networks that you can use to plan your next steps.  
• Travel with a friend who can use a SIM card : Are you someone who gets lost and overwhelmed easily, but cannot use a SIM card due to contractual reasons? In my opinion, you could still manage without a SIM card, but it might be very stressful for you. Thus, my advice is to come with a friend who can use a SIM card! You will feel much better, and they can hotspot you, taking advantage of the low costs of data from their SIM card. But this is a last resort for those of you who need Internet access to feel comfortable! 

Conclusions about the best SIM cards for Poland

There are a lot of great cost-effective choices for SIM cards in Poland. There are packages for almost every length imaginable starting from as low as 1 PLN! There are also great e-SIM options such as Airalo, and even further options beyond the 5 mentioned in this article. The best sim card in Poland is the T-Mobile Go! prepaid sim card . The options with this sim card are extremely flexible as you can choose to spend as much or as little as you need to get by during your travels.

When you get your sim card you choose how much you wish to top up. The options range from 5 PLN (2GB for 5 days) to 200 PLN (100GB for 100 days). If you are only visiting for a few days, then topping up 5 or 10 PLN is the cheapest option and what I would recommend. For anyone staying for longer then I recommend topping up 30 PLN which comes with a massive 30GB data which is valid for 30 days.

I’ve never had issues finding a store as they can usually be found in major cities, shopping centers, or tourist areas. If possible, I always recommend to to avoid airports and head in to an official store in the city.

Bring the necessary documents: It is always a good idea to carry your passport or identification documents for sim card registration purposes. We’ve found most providers will need to confirm your identity to provide a sim card and it can be a major hassle to head to a store only to have to come back again later with your passport.

Choose your plan: Either request the plan you are after or consult with the staff in the store to select the right plan for you. My recommendations at the beginning of this guide are a good starting point, but the staff will usually be able to suggest the best option.

Pay and activate your card: Pay for the SIM card and plan, and the staff will activate it for you.

Test: It’s always a good idea to check that you can access the internet before you leave the store. I always search for something on Google then refresh my Instagram feed to check it’s working fine.

Where to Get a Sim Card in Poland

At the airport.

Buying a prepaid sim card for Poland at the airport is usually considered the most convenient option for travellers arriving by plane.

However, airport stores selling sim cards are almost guaranteed to charge inflated prices, so if you are a cost-conscious traveller then you should definitely buy your sim card from a store in the city center.

In addition to this, we would argue that buying physical sim cards at all aren’t particularly convenient now that most people use esim compatible phones. If you are looking for the most convenient option, then buying an esim before you arrive or with the airport wifi is much easier and will save you having to queue up or communicate with staff.

If you must purchase a sim card at the airport in Poland then you will be in luck. All major international airports in Poland have stores selling sim cards. Despite the prices being higher than normal, the staff are knowledgable and will be able to get you set up with the correct sim card relatively quickly.

If you want to avoid the inflated sim card prices you’ll find at the airport and your phone isn’t esim compatible, then you’re going to need to head in to a store to buy your sim card.

I recommend visiting one of the official retail stores of the mobile internet operators such as Plus, T-Mobile and Orange. Your best option is to enter their names into Google Maps and find the branch closest to your hotel or accommodation. Typically the staff in the official stores in Poland are knowledgable and helpful which means you can ensure you’ll walk away with a functioning sim card.

Despite this, it’s always a good idea to check your internet is working before you leave the store by loading a Google search results page and your preferred social media app. You should also ensure you always bring your passport with you when purchasing a sim card in case they need to register it.

If you like to be prepared and would prefer to arrive in Poland with your sim card all sorted and your phone ready to connect to the internet immediately then you should look into purchasing a sim card online.

When does my data plan begin?

Your plan activates immediately upon connecting your eSIM to any supported network. For example, if you bought a 1-day plan and you activate your plan at 10 AM, it remains active for a full 24 hours, concluding at 10 AM the following day.

Can I make phone calls and send messages with my Holafly eSIM?

The Poland eSIM only allows you to use mobile data. It does not include a local phone number for mobile calls or messages. You can still make calls using apps like WhatsApp.

Could the internet speed with my Holafly eSIM be reduced?

In a rare scenario, yes. Operators enforce an international measure called Fair Usage Policy to ensure fair internet usage and allow all users to enjoy optimal connection. This measure might be applied for a period of no more than one (1) day. It’s beyond Holafly’s control, but don’t worry! If this measure affects you, the restriction will be lifted the next day, and you’ll have your original plan speed back.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card that can be installed directly into your smartphone or other mobile devices. It is an alternative to the physical, removable SIM card you’re used to.

Can I renew or extend the data on my eSIM?

Yes, you can do so by logging into your customer panel on the Holafly Center. You will find the data plans you can purchase there. Once you’ve made your purchase, it will be activated immediately on the eSIM you have linked.

Can I share data with other devices?

Certainly! With the Poland eSIM, you have the capability to share up to 500MB of data per day across devices by creating a WiFi connection using your smartphone. Refer to your device instructions for guidance on setting up a WiFi connection via a mobile hotspot.

How do I set up the eSIM on my device?

After your purchase, we will send a QR code and manual instructions to your email. Either print the QR code or open it on your computer. On your cell phone, go to Settings > Mobile Data > Add Data Plan and scan the QR code. Your phone will allow you to assign a specific name to this data plan. You will now be able to switch between your Holafly data plan and the original plan from your provider. The Holafly data plan will only be operational once you arrive at your destination. Once you land, turn on data roaming on your cell phone settings and activate the Holafly data plan. Consult your phone’s user manual for more details on adding a data plan. All eSIM products come with comprehensive set-up instructions.

When should I set up my eSIM?

Set up your eSIM before your departure. Once you reach your destination, just activate the data plan turning on data roaming. We recommend you print the QR code to take it and manual instructions with you on vacation, just in case. Remember that you need internet access to install the eSIM.

How can I check my data balance?

You can manage your eSIMs and access all purchased data plans by logging into your Holafly Center through the Holafly website.

How many times can I use my eSIM card?

If needed or when changing phones during your trip, you can transfer your eSIM. However, note that you can only transfer the eSIM to two devices—the original one and a new one. Once you’ve installed it on a different device than the original, you won’t be able to reinstall it on the original device and you must deliver the eSIM from the original device to install it in the second device.

Can I delete the Holafly eSIM once I’ve used my data?

Yes! But keep in mind that you don’t need to do so. As soon as your plan expires your eSIM will no longer work.

Can I use my SIM card and Holafly eSIM at the same time?

If you are using an Apple device, you can use your SIM card and your eSim at the same time. Choose the Sim card for phone calls and SMS, and Holafly eSIM for data from your device. Please remember that if you leave your Sim card activated, your network provider may apply data roaming charges to receive or make phone calls as well as SMS.

How do I get a refund?

At Holafly we are aware that our users may have unforeseen events after making the purchase. Therefore, you can request a refund in the following circumstances: – You bought the eSIM without checking the compatibility with your cellphone. – You canceled your trip or you no longer need the eSIM. – Our eSIMs generally work fine, but if you experience connection issues, we can provide you with a full or partial refund.
