  • Maui is the second-largest Hawaiian island with the third-largest population, 144,000 people
  • Maui is home to the largest humpback whale migration in the world from mid-December to mid-April. Come to Maui to see acrobatic feats and guaranteed whale sightings – The Ultimate Whale Watching Guide .

Maui Geography

Let’s get a lay of the island so you can plan your trip easier!

Maui is the second-largest island in Hawaii and is uniquely shaped. It was formed by two volcanoes, Haleakala and the West Maui Mountains.

Like all of the Hawaiian islands, there are two sides: a leeward side and a windward side. The leeward side of the island is drier and the windward side is wetter.

There are five distinct areas on the island: West Maui, South Maui, Central Maui, Upcountry Maui, and East Maui (Hana).

maui travel guide map

On West Maui, you’ll find long stretches of beaches, warm weather, numerous snorkeling spots, plenty of resorts and vacation rentals, and jaw-dropping sunsets. West Maui suffered the devastating Lahaina fire in 2023 , which will take years to recover from. The historic town of Lahaina has been destroyed and is not open to visitors .

Other areas of West Maui are open to visitors, including the Ka’anapali resort area, snorkeling spots like Kapalua Bay, and the picturesque Napili Bay . Please visit the west side with care and aloha as they rebuild . Check out our favorite things to do in Kapalua and Napili if you want to enjoy the areas of West Maui that are welcoming visitors.

Another popular spot with visitors, South Maui dials up the luxury. Here you’ll find the most luxurious hotels on the island, stunning beaches, and views of Molokini Crater and Kahoolawe.

Popular spots here include the resort community of Wailea, the small town of Kihei, the expansive Makena Beach, and plenty of tour boats leaving for snorkeling at Molokini Crater.

Check out our favorite beaches and things to do in South Maui .

Central Maui

You’ll fly into central Maui when you land at Kahului Airport (OGG), the main commercial airport on the island. But that’s not all you’ll find here. Once you leave the main airport area, you’ll find plenty of small restaurants and shops, dramatic mountain views, and great hiking.

Visit the sacred Iao Valley or hike the Waihee Ridge Trail. Or head up to the north coast to stroll through the town of Paia and eat at the most famous restaurant in Hawaii: Mama’s Fish House ( Is Mama’s Fish House Best for Lunch or Dinner? ).

Maui Travel Guide - Mama's Fish House

Kahului is a main cruise port in Hawaii , so if you’re visiting on a cruise ship, be sure to check out all our Hawaii cruise resources , including our favorite Maui shore excursions .

Upcountry Maui

Bring your sweater and head up the slope of Haleakala to Upcountry Maui. You’ll climb in elevation as you get beautiful views of the ocean below you.

You can visit the small cowboy town of Makawao, visit one of the many farms on the island to sample fresh tropical produce, or continue heading up the mountain to the top and visit Haleakala National Park.

In Upcountry, the drive is often just as beautiful as the destination. Most of our favorite Maui farm tours are in Upcountry. And don’t forget to check out our favorite things to do in upcountry Maui .

Visit East Maui by taking the famous Road to Hana (decide here if the Road to Hana is worth it for you!). This drive takes you around 620 curves, over 59 bridges, and delivers views of a stunning coastline, lush landscape, and stunning waterfalls.

This windward part of the island is remote and rugged and an adventure. See our Maui Itinerary on how to plan your stops to Hana or check out our favorite Road to Hana Guided Tour .

We also put together a comprehensive guide on the Road to Hana , and we’ll help you choose the right route for your group.

What’s the Best Time of Year to Visit Maui?

While you may be visiting from a place that has four seasons each year, in Hawaii there are just two: summer (kau) and winter (hooilo):

Luckily, the weather on Maui is warm and pleasant year-round, so there’s truly no bad time to visit. But our favorite months to visit are April/May and September/October, because there are fewer visitors, the weather is great, and it’s a little less expensive to travel in this off-peak season period.

  • Visiting Maui in the Winter: Is it a Good Idea?

While the winter months get slightly cooler temperatures and there is a little more rain, staying on South or West Maui will increase your chances of sunny days and tank top temperatures. That’s why Maui is such a great place to visit year-round.

And if you’re curious about ocean temperatures and conditions, we have good news. The ocean temperature is always between 75 to 80 degrees, year-round. That means you can swim comfortably in January and in June.

But aside from temperature, consider waves.

best Surf Lessons lahaina Maui

During the summer months, you can usually find calm water around the island. The exception is if there is a storm (or remnants of a storm) passing by or if the island is getting a south swell.

South Maui is known to get swells during the summer months, which can bring in larger waves and choppy conditions. West Maui will generally have calmer ocean conditions in the summer.

In the winter, north swells can bring choppy water and large waves to the north, west, and east side of the island, while the south usually stays a bit calmer.

Getting to Maui

There are two airports on Maui, though one is used very infrequently. The main airport is Kahului Airport (OGG) . This airport is located in central Maui, approximately 30 minutes from Wailea and 45 minutes from Ka’anapali. Kahului airport serves inter-island, domestic, and international flights.

The second airport, Kapalua Airport, is located in West Maui, just a short distance from Ka’anapali. You’ll primarily find flights to Kapalua Airport from Honolulu on Mokulele Airlines. Island Hopping in Hawaii: How To Do It Right .

Renting a Car and Getting Around the Maui

Should you rent a car in Maui? Most likely, yes. While Maui does have a bus system and has uber and taxis, renting a car makes traveling around on your vacation easier.

We’ve done the math for you to help you decide if renting a car in Maui is right for you .

Our favorite tip for anyone visiting Hawaii is to book with Discount Hawaii Car Rental . When we travel inter-island or we have friends in town, we use them 95% of the time. They offer the most competitive rates, they work with national agencies, you don’t have to pre-book, and you can cancel at any time. There are also great local companies to rent from, like Kihei Rent a Car. See our Should You Rent a Car on Maui video for more information.

If you can’t get a car (remember that great rental car shortage of summer 2021?) or you just don’t want to get one, here are 11 tips for getting around Maui without a car .

For the most part, the roads on Maui are well paved and easy to navigate with any type of car — no 4-wheel drive required! Though if you want to rent a jeep…it really is fun.

If you don’t want to rent a car but still want to get out and see the sights, a guided tour is a great option. Two of our favorite tours that will pick you up from your hotel and take you around are the Haleakala Guided Sunrise Tour and the Road to Hana Guided Tour .

Where to Stay on Maui

Ready to book your stay on Maui? Maui has plenty of five-star resorts, outstanding vacation rentals, and a range of options in between. But what is right for you?

For details on our favorite hotels and vacation rentals on Maui, see our Where to Section Maui !

Should you stay in a hotel or vacation rental in Maui?

Go for a hotel if you’re looking for the traditional resort experience with big pools, nearby beaches, and restaurants within walking distance. Opt for a vacation rental if you want access to a kitchen, are looking for space, or are looking to save money.

We routinely stay in both. We’ll book a vacation rental for the majority of our stay so we have access to a kitchen and a little more space for the kids. Then we’ll treat ourselves to a great resort for a few days to enjoy the pool and other amenities. This has been a winning combo for us recently.

If you’re still not sure what you want to do, we break down the difference between choosing a hotel and a vacation rental in Hawaii .

Maui Vacation Rental for Large Groups

Should you stay in Ka’anapali, Wailea, Kihei, or…?

While there are five main areas on Maui, most visitors stay on either West Maui or South Maui to maximize their odds of sunshine, warm weather, and lack of rain.

Whether you should stay in West Maui (Ka’anapali, Lahaina, Napili, Kapalua) or South Maui (Kihei, Wailea, Makena) is often a heated debate. We try to help you make the right decision for you with these two articles:

How Many Days Should You Stay on Maui

According to the Hawaii Tourism Authority, in January 2022, the average length of stay for a visitor to Maui was nearly 10 days! While you might not be able to get away for that long, we recommend starting with at least a week on the island. There is so much to see and that gives you time to balance relaxation with adventure.

Read more about why we recommend spending at least a week on Maui . And don’t miss our Hawaii packing list as you’re getting ready to go.

Beaches and Snorkeling Spots on Maui

If you’re coming to Maui to snorkel, you’re in luck! In our opinion, Maui is the best island for snorkeling. Add in the stunning beaches, and you are in for a treat. Our favorite beaches include:

travel and leisure maui

  • Kapalua Bay : There’s a reason this beach was named the best beach by Dr. Beach in 2018. A beautiful crescent-shaped beach that is partially protected from larger waves for most of the year, this is the perfect spot to spend the day. It’s also a fantastic snorkeling spot. Get the full details on Kapalua Bay .
  • Kahekili (Airport) Beach Park : This Ka’anapali Beach is a gem. It’s usually less crowded than the beaches in Ka’anapali, it has a large, free parking lot. And there’s a nice reef for snorkeling. Plan your visit with our Airport Beach on Maui: The Full Guide .
  • Wailea Beach : There’s a reason some of the biggest resorts on Maui are located on this beach. It’s large, beautiful, and has water that is generally easily swimmable. It’s a beautiful place to spend the entire day.

Maui is full of great beaches. Don’t miss our 17 favorite beaches on Maui , with directions and other details like amenities, parking, and lifeguard services. We also break down our favorite beaches in South Maui !

Remember that while the beaches in Hawaii are beautiful, they are not without risk. Currents, dangerous shore break, and changing ocean conditions make swimming in any ocean dangerous. Practice beach safety by swimming on beaches with lifeguards, obeying lifeguard flags, and when in doubt, don’t go out. This website has more excellent information to help keep you safe.

19 Best Restaurants in Maui

By Kris Fordham and Juliana Shallcross

food. table. steak. knife. cut. vegetables. fish. hands. fruit. plate

Thanks to its inventive and visionary chefs, myriad cultural influences , and an incredible natural bounty, the food on Maui is as exciting and diverse as the island itself. While the dining scene has changed a bit during the pandemic—expect longer lines, limited menus, and shorter hours—Maui restaurants have deepened their connection to the island through locally-sourced food and drink, with even the big resorts serving up local dishes you’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere else. Whether you're after homestyle Hawaiian lunch plates, the freshest seafood, or farm-to-table fine dining with a view, there's a place to suit your taste, mood, and price point. Here are a few of our favorite contenders for the best Maui restaurants.

Read our complete Maui travel guide here .

This gallery has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

United States Hawaii Maui Restaurant Merriman's Kapalua

Merriman's Maui Arrow

With its vaulted ceilings, candlelit tables, and panoramic ocean views, Merriman's is one of Maui's most elegant and romantic restaurants, without being overly stuffy. The dishes here are made using 90 percent local ingredients, a showcase of the island's seafood, meat, and vegetables. Menu highlights include Keahole lobster with Maui corn and Hawaiian chili pepper, Kahua Ranch lamb with papaya salsa, and taro cakes with Hamakua mushrooms and local Swiss chard.

United States Hawaii Maui Restaurant Tin Roof

Tin Roof Arrow

Tin Roof is a bustling and cozy takeout-style restaurant sandwiched between a payday loan shop and a small gallery in a strip mall. It's not pretty, but the food, from James Beard Award-nominated Top Chef finalist Sheldon Simeon, is glorious—just ask the dozens of people waiting in line. Order the Kau Kau Tins, layered Hawaiian rice bowls. You can't go wrong with any of them, but the Mochiko chicken (chicken thighs marinated in ginger-sake shoyu, battered, and then double-fried) and the pork belly bowl are so good they'll haunt you.

United States Hawaii Maui Restaurant Taverna

Taverna Arrow

Taverna is modern, trendy, and attractive, with lots of raw wood and industrial-chic decor. The central bar has a buzzy, boisterous, sports-bar vibe to it—a lot of people seem to come just for happy hour—but the rest of the restaurant remains relaxed and low-key. The menu offers Italian crowd-pleasers like lasagna, carbonara, and ossobuco, all beautifully done. Standouts include fritto misto (fried seafood), polpette (beef and bacon meatballs), and, for dessert, tiramisu and panna cotta.

chef. salt. food. poke. fish

Kō Restaurant Arrow

The Fairmont Kea Lani is one of the most visually striking resorts in Wailea, and its signature restaurant adds to this out-of-time feeling, especially at night, when the ocean breezes lull guests into a blissful state of happiness. Kō executive chef Jonathan Pasion, a Maui native, has put together a plantation-era style menu that reflects the immigrant culture of Hawaii and demonstrates the culinary influences of Chinese, Filipino, Portuguese, Korean, Japanese, and Hawaiians. The menu is not broken down into starters and entrees, but rather “mo’ono”, delicious and favorable small plates; “pupu”, appetizers; “lawai’a”, fresh catch served in two different ways; “makai”, from the sea; and “mauka”, from the land. With rich options in each category, it’s possible to have one mo’ono and one pupu and be completely satisfied, and everything is made with the freshest seafood, meats, and  local produce. A few standouts are the coconut curry soup, the fresh catch served in the lemongrass coconut broth, the lobster tempura and the crispy pork shank. If you have room for dessert, opt for the Maui take on a cheesecake, which is slightly deconstructed and made with a toasted coconut-graham cracker crust.

The Bamboo Hale at Hāna Farms Arrow

What started out as a roadside fruit and vegetable stand that opened in 1996 along the legendary Road to Hana , the Bamboo Hale Cafe is a restaurant that has evolved from a working farm, marketplace, and bakery on eastern Maui. If you've done the 64-mile drive and are in the mood for a sit-down meal, and it’s all about the wood-fired pizzas here, which can rival the pies of the U.S. mainland: Each pizza is made with Maui-grown meat and produce, including herbs grown at Hana Farms. Some standouts are the Hana Dragon, topped with sopressata and Hawaiian-chili hot honey; the Green Harvest, a vegetarian pizza chock full of veggies and sprinkled with jalapeños and arugula; and the simple Wild Tomato Margherita, which is unbelievably fresh.

United States Hawaii Maui Restaurant Star Noodle

Star Noodle Arrow

Star Noodle is airy, modern, and Japanese-inspired, with lots of natural finishes like stone and teak and wicker rattan chairs. The vibe is decidedly casual and low-key, with guests chatting and chowing down on gorgeous, family-style Asian plates: Filipino meets Korean meets Japanese meets Singaporean flavors, and it all works beautifully. Standouts include the Vietnamese crepes, filled with shrimp, pork, and bean sprouts and served with sweet-and-sour Nuoc Cham, the porky Hapa Ramen, and the melt-in-your-mouth adobo ribs.

United States Hawaii Maui Restaurant Leoda's Kitchen and Pie Shop

Leoda's Kitchen and Pie Shop Arrow

Though Leoda's Kitchen and Pie Shop is cute enough, with its chalkboard pie menu and wooden tables, the ambience is not what draws perpetually long lines. Although you can get typical diner fare like burgers, pot pies, and pastrami sandwiches, everything's made with ingredients from nearby farms. But the real thing to order here is (duh) the pies, which rotate daily. Standouts: the blissfully tart Olowalu Lime Pie, the fluffy and decadent Coconut Cream Pie, and the Kiawe Bean Tart, made with Maui Meyer lemons and sweet, nutty kiawe flour.

Honu Oceanside Arrow

On the far end of Lahaina’s Front Street, away from the congested shops and streets, Honu Oceanside is a longtime Maui institution. It has a built-in fanbase of locals, part-timers, and frequent visitors who patronized the restaurant when chef Mark Ellman ran the place (along with the nearby Mala Tavern.) Despite a recent total makeover, the restaurant still has much of Ellman’s menu in place meaning it draws the regulars as much as the curious tourists for pizzas (try the Ali’i hamakua mushroom with white truffles), big plates (rock shrimp mac and cheese), and the island-famous ahi bruschetta starter. The oyster selections fit the mood for mid-day meal with friends by the ocean, but if all you want is a simple cheeseburger Honu does that well too, on a brioche bun topped with bacon and caramelized onions.

United States Hawaii Maui Restaurant Ferraro's Bar e Ristorante

Ferraro's Bar e Ristorante Arrow

Ferraro's Bar e Ristorante, the Four Seasons Maui 's signature Italian restaurant, wows from the outset, thanks to hanging lamps, a perch above Wailea Beach, and live music wafting softly in the background. During sunset, the candlelit tables by the ocean are so impossibly picture-perfect you'll feel like you're starring in your own romantic comedy. The menu features big, bold salads (like the tomato and burrata), handmade pastas, and grilled meat and fish. Every dish is beautiful and delicate, but filling and never too precious.

United States Hawaii Maui Restaurant Hali'imaile General Store

Hali'imaile General Store Arrow

Hali'imaile General Store is housed in a historic 1920s building that once served the workers of the surrounding pineapple fields. In 1988, the space was transformed into this charming, airy general store–cum-restaurant, which has a warm and inviting vibe. Hali'imaile was serving up farm-to-table cuisine before it was even a thing and, 30 years later, it's still doing that well. The menu probably hasn't changed much over time, with classics like roast chicken with Molokai sweet potato mash, scallop risotto with Kula corn, and roast duck with pineapple chutney.

Kitoko Maui Arrow

Kitoko Maui is an upscale food truck, but you won’t find it alongside the highway like so many others in Hawaii. Instead you’ll get to it by walking a crunchy gravel path lined with lush potted plants and oversized Buddha statues into South Maui Gardens, a longtime plant nursery in Kihei. It’s all about the beautifully plated steel bento boxes topped with Kauai shrimp, braised beef, or swordfish. (You can even go vegan.) The grilled shrimp are a great choice for when it’s hot out; served on a bed of citrusy vegetables and sprinkled with nuts, they give a Thai twist on an unbelievably fresh Hawaiian staple. Desserts such as the macadamia-caramel tiramisu and homemade sorbets are among the most delicious sweets you’ll eat in Maui, and they look good on Instagram, too.

food. table. hands

Lineage Arrow

There are a handful of restaurants to dine at within the swanky Shops at Wailea , an upscale mall just behind the resorts along Wailea’s beaches, but only Lineage strikes a genuine chord when it comes to both food and ambience.  The most recent incarnation (post-coronavirus) has a menu that leans more Korean and Chinese in flavor with to-share dishes like the Korean fried chicken, garlic szechuan noodles, and a wagyu kalbi short rib served with a roasted bone marrow. If you want to start light the smashed cucumber and Szechuan peanut vinaigrette is a delicious option; on the other side of the spectrum, the aji tamago, a soy-dashi marinated six-minute egg filled with potato whip and truffled mushroom duxelle is decadent and heavenly. For dessert you’ll want the Mauka Road ice cream sundae, made with Valrhona dark chocolate ice cream, candied mac nut, mochi, and topped with a coconut and white chocolate fudge sauce.

United States Hawaii Maui Restaurant Ka'ana Kitchen

Ka'Ana Kitchen Arrow

Ka'ana Kitchen, overlooking the terraced pools at Andaz Maui , is an earthy, modern, sun-filled space that's sleek and welcoming in the daytime and romantically low-lit in the evening. Though the menu changes seasonally, you can expect dishes like the Kona Kampachi poke with local beets and Hawaiian chili pepper, grilled octopus with Big Island chevre, and risotto with local Ali'i mushrooms and miso. Every dish is clean, bright, and flavorful, and portions are hearty and served family-style. Leave room for dessert—the chocolate tres leches with Kona coffee ice cream is a dream.

Default

Mama's Fish House Arrow

If you're looking for fine dining, island-style, this iconic Paia restaurant is it: classy and refined, decked out in glossy hardwood finishes, and wrapped in expansive ocean views, it's the archetypal special-occasion spot. Servers clad in Hawaiian-print muumuus and aloha shirts glide about gracefully, balancing beautiful cocktails and exquisite-looking seafood. Mama's does the best and freshest seafood menu on the island—so fresh that the menu changes daily and it even tells you which fisherman caught what you're about to eat, and where.

Moku Roots Arrow

Located in a Maui shopping center, inland from Lahaina’s waterfront and next to a Ross department store and a DMV, Maui Roots' food is anything but chain-restaurant grub. It also has an extensive cocktail list, including a few daily specials. They also serve local beers, a hard kombucha, and Prosecco. But to get into the island mood here, order an “If You Like Vegan Coladas”, made with rum, organic cane sugar, fresh macadamia nut milk, and the house-made toasted local coconut. An extensive menu features both vegetarian and vegan takes on Hawaiian dishes and traditional comfort foods includes a famous taro burger on an oat-wheat bun and topped with macadamia nut aioli, a flavor-packed coconut "noodle" bowl of mixed greens and herbs and topped with avocado and a cilantro lemongrass crema, and sushi-ritos dressed with a spicy pink aioli and wrapped in a ti leaf.

United States Hawaii Maui Restaurant The Plantation House

The Plantation House Arrow

Located in a gorgeous clubhouse overlooking Kapalua's lush Plantation Golf Course, the Plantation House is the go-to place on Maui to celebrate a special occasion. The sweeping views over the world-famous golf course and the ocean are worth the trip alone. If you're here for dinner, expect Angus beef, Australian lamb, just-caught mahi mahi, and fresh local crudo. Make sure to have the somm walk you through the phone book-length wine list, which is a mix of crowd-pleasers like New Zealand sauvignon blancs and Napa Valley cabernets, wonderfully obscure varietals and big-spender bubbles (Bollinger, Taittinger, Dom Perignon).

Sam Sato's Arrow

At first glance, Sam Sato's looks like any old, hole-in-the wall, old-timey diner: ceiling fans, tables topped with ketchup and mustard, plastic-covered menus, little booths. But one look at the full house and bonkers line, and it's clear this isn't just your average greasy spoon. The signature dish is the dry mein: a twist on traditional saimin, a Hawaiian noodle soup flavored with dashi broth. Sato's tosses dry noodles in a special seasoning mixture, garnishes them with green onions, char siu pork, and bean sprouts, and serves that concoction with a side of dashi broth.

United States Hawaii Maui Restaurant Paia Fish Market

Paia Fish Market Arrow

Paia Fish Market has a casual, cozy, family-friendly atmosphere with communal wooden tables, dive bar decor, and cool surf photography. It's counter service only, so you'll need to stand in a perpetually long line, but the food's worth the inevitable wait. As its name suggests, this place specializes in just-caught, fresh-off-the-boat local seafood, prepared exactly the way you like it. The Fresh Catch plates are a good starting point: you can choose your fish (mahi mahi, ahi, snapper), how you want it prepared (grilled, sautéed, Cajun-style), and your sides (rice, home fries, or French fries).

Haiku is a sleepy North Shore town often passed over by tourists, but locals from all ends of the island will make the trek for a taste of Nuka’s seriously fresh sushi and izakaya-style eats. Start your meal with small plates like the truffle edamame or tofu drenched in dashi broth; from there, you can dive into a filling rice bowl made with shaved cabbage, avocado, carrots, basil and mint and topped with your choice of protein, or order a specialty roll made with freshly-caught fish. Then there's the Kushiyaki grilled skewers; miso butterfish and sesame chicken wings round things out. Clever, on-trend cocktails change daily and are more in line with what you’d find at a hotel bar—jazzed up tequila and vodka drinks, a few with a Japanese twist—but the sake selections are carefully consideredm and Japanese beers make for great pairing options as well.

Maui is not nearly as large as the Big Island, nor is it as small as Lanai, as bustling as Oahu or as quiet as Kauai. For many Hawaii vacationers, Maui is just right – offering a taste of just about everything the Aloha State has to offer, from impressive wildlife to intriguing history and culture. While on a visit here, you can shimmy alongside professional hula dancers, golf along coastal fairways, sail down a zip line , snorkel  alongside five different types of sea turtles or simply lounge along some of Hawaii's most notable beaches.

Day 1: Arrive in Maui

A large brown banyan tree with green leaves in Maui, Hawaii.

Upon arrival, take the first day to explore the historic town of Lahaina at your leisure. Some must do's and must see's are:

Banyan Tree Park

Lahaina Front Street (for shopping!)

The rooftop at Fleetwood's on Front Street for a drink

Enjoy your first dinner at the five star Lahaina Grill – considered one of the top dining restaurants in the United States.

Day 2: Wine and luau

A paved road with a white truck driving into green mountains into the distance in Maui, Hawaii.

Take the scenic drive to Maui's best known winery, Maui Wine, and take in the beautiful views of Maui's south coast with a wine glass in hand. On your way there (or back) stop at The Mill House for lunch.

At night, attend an authentic Hawaiian Luau known as the Old Lahaina Luau, complete with traditional Hawaiian cuisine, culture and music. Afterwards, enjoy drinks on the harbor at Kimo's Maui.

Day 3: Beach it up

A yellow sunset over the water with four boats floating in Maui, Hawaii.

Today, you have options! Snorkel at some of Maui's most pristine reefs and take in views of Lana'i's stunning sea cliffs on a luxury catamaran. Tropical fruits, drinks and lunch all included on this five hour, relaxing cruise.

Or you can explore Maui's beaches at your own leisure. Some great options are Ka'anapali Beach, Black Rock Beach (both close to your hotel and great for snorkeling!) and Big Beach.

For lunch, if you are near Lahaina, stop at Down The Hatch. If you're near Big Beach,  Jazzy's Kitchen Mexican Food Truck is a classic for some tacos.

Head to Maui's north shore for a dinner at Mama's Fish House, a local landmark complete with a seafood-driven Hawaiian menu, Polynesian decor and epic ocean views – considered a must visit when you are on Maui.

Day 4: Road to Hana

A pavement road with a red car driving up in the middle of lush greenery on The Road to Hana in Maui, Hawaii.

Begin your drive to Hana town (you'll want to leave early!), which will take roughly six to ten hours, depending on how long you stop at each spot. It is worth noting that you can turn around whenever you want! Most people drive to Hana and back instead of doing a full loop for the sake of time.

Must-sees on the Road to Hana:

Ho'okipa Beach Park

Maui Garden of Eden

Wailea State Wayside Park

Hanawi Falls

Nahiku Marketplace

Wai’anapanapa State Park

Hamoa Beach

Seven Sacred Pools

While in Hana, try Koki's Famous Huli Huli Chicken or Aunt Sandy's Banana Bread for a snack. For dinner, try some highly rated, delicious Italian food at Sale Pepe.

Day 5: Cruising and bites

Fish tacos and a green kale salad on white plates with a pink cocktail at Leilani's On The Beach in Maui, Hawaii.

Enjoy doing absolutely nothing today! Hang back at your beautiful resort and enjoy the pool or beach at your leisure.

Head to Honu Oceanside for lunch with beautiful ocean views.

Set sail on the number one sunset dinner cruise on Maui, known as the Pride of Maui. Dinner includes appetizers, locally grown salad, a choice of entrées, dessert and an array of drinks and cocktails. Island-style music and open sea views of Maui’s scenic coast add to the ambience of this memorable experience.

Enjoy your last night with drinks at Leilani's On The Beach.

During the first week of June the hotel is host to the 43rd annual Kapalua Wine and Food Festival, an exciting roster of festivities celebrating culinary specialties, premium wines, and the best of island life. Even if you arrive after that, however, you’ll have the opportunity to sample Maui’s bounty of land and sea and its unique and sustainable ingredients at the hotel’s signature Banyan Tree restaurant, where walls of cascading orchids frame the view of the ocean. And for sipping a fine wine or signature cocktail with a sunset panorama and live entertainment, there’s no better place than the Alaloa Lounge.

Traditional and nontraditional cuisine are just one aspect of “Tales of the Kapa Moe Lūʻau,” which includes hula, chanting, beautifully handmade costumes, and a dramatic fire knife dance, while putting a modern spin on the feast. It all takes place every Tuesday and Friday in the newly renovated Aloha Garden Pavilion.

Summer is the perfect time to visit Maui. The golden-sand beaches are glorious, and the famed Road to Hana beckons, with its waterfalls, parks, and ocean panoramas. The striking volcanic landscape of Haleakala National Park, home to endangered species, including some that exist nowhere else, is another must-do island excursion.

The holiday season at the Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua, kicks off in early December, inaugurating a month of harvest- and holiday-themed dinners, lei making, live music, and other special offerings.

Then the new year begins with a major golf event: the PGA Tour—The Sentry, which happens at the Plantation Course at Kapalua, January 2-6, 2025. Guests who reserve the 2025 Ultimate Bucket List for the Sentry Tournament Skybox package will be able to watch the action from the Cabanas on 18 Skybox and enjoy a host of other perks.

Soon after that—January 15-18—music aficionados will want to attend the Maui Songwriters Festival, which will be celebrating its 10-year anniversary. Singer-songwriters, producers, and composers from Nashville will be on hand to perform their hits in genres that range from country and pop to Americana and hip-hop and in venues large and small.

Looking forward to spring of 2025, the hotel will again host the deep dive into Hawaiian culture that is the annual Celebration of the Arts.

Regardless of the season, any stay at the Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua, is an event to be savored, one bound to linger in your memory. Throughout the hotel there’s a palpable sense of the richness of Hawaiian culture and heritage and many opportunities to appreciate and explore the natural environment. The spirit of aloha has never been stronger.

“The beauty of Kapalua is that you can do as little or as much as you’d like,” said Melissa Lee, hotel manager, The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua. “Our signature events offer something for all interests. And for those who want a relaxing getaway, Kapalua is known for its jaw-dropping beauty year-round, perfect for unplugging. Combined with the legendary service of The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua, this is an unbelievable destination.”

T&C Travel Guide: Hawaii's Big Island

An itinerary to bliss out on Hawaii's main island, from snorkeling with manta rays to lazy beach days (and the food to go with it).

mauna lanai

Every item on this page was chosen by a Town & Country editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.

Where to Go

usa hawaii kona akaka falls

Akaka Falls

One of the Big Island's most famous waterfalls, Akaka Falls and its smaller neighbor Kahuna Falls are on the Hilo side of the island, which means it is located in a lush rainforest. A quick half-mile loop takes you through both falls, making it an easy stop and general crowd pleaser (especially if you have impatient kids in tow).

Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve and Garden

A 10-minute drive from Akaka Falls, the bioreserve is an incredibly special piece of land along Onomea Bay that serves as a sanctuary and living seed bank. The mile or so walk includes a mind-boggling array of flowers, trees, and plants, along with waterfalls and views of the ocean.

diver observes a manta ray

Night Ray Manta Snorkel

Everyone knows that the snorkeling in Hawaii is unmatched, but do not skip out on night snorkeling with 1,000-pound manta rays (no, they are not dangerous to humans). Bonus, GoPro cameras are also available to rent for the experience for serious social media bragging rights.

Hilo Farmers Market

Hawaiian fruit is legendary and rather than be limited to a restaurant plate, explore it for yourself at one of the island's farmers markets . In addition to produce, you can score local coffee, honey, and Hawaiian treats like mochi and malasadas. Each town likely has a market, but the one in Hilo is open Wednesday through Saturday and has over 200 vendors, so it is easy to work into a travel itinerary.

hapuna beach state recreation area is a large park and sandy

Hapuna Beach

Between hiking around and zip lining over waterfalls , it can be easy to forget to take a day or two to simply soak in Hawaii itself. This white sand beach is a great place to swim and sun on repeat.

Where to Eat

canoe house mains

Ocean views, tiki torches, and prime sunset viewing make for an experience that would be memorable no matter what, but the Japanese-inspired Hawaiian menu is also spectacularly addictive. Run by husband-wife team executive chef Matt Raso and general manager Yuka Raso, CanoeHouse is inventive and elevated without being stuffy. Order the corn ribs, radish salad, grilled Kona Kampachi, and off-menu fried rice, trust.

Over 90 percent of the menu at this small Hawaiian chain are locally sourced and we especially like it for a casual lunch although the prix fixe dinner is no slouch either.

coffee trees are perennial dicotyledon

Rooster Farms

Go all in on a kona coffee experience at this small, organic farm . Make an appointment in advance, be prepared to go off the beaten path, and enjoy an authentic experience. Leave buzzed, with a few bags of coffee to take home.

Where to Stay

mauna lani is a resort on the kona coast that mixes local fare with tropical indulgences expertly

It is no small feat for a resort to balance the surrounding culture authentically while offering the luxurious amenities that evoke a postcard tropical paradise. At Mauna Lani , the two blend together seamlessly. A series of tiered pools, which appear to trail off into the ocean and are the perfect place to spend an afternoon, cocktail in hand, are also adjacent to former royal Hawaiian fishing ponds that have been restored to showcase ancient Hawaiian engineering. Guests can spend time with Uncle Danny Akaka, a resident historian who plays ukulele and shares Hawaiian folk tales, observe ancient petroglyphs carved into stone on the property... or play a few rounds of pickleball or tennis on nearby courts. Daily activities also include morning sunrise canoe paddles—part exercise, part meditation—snorkeling, stand-up paddle boarding, and swimming with the resident dog, Mika. Guests can dine at the upscale CanoeHouse (above) or grab a sandwich or spam musubi at the market. The concierge can also arrange for rental cars or a group trip to other parts of the island, but perhaps the only drawback to Mauna Lani is that you may never want to leave.

3 Ways To Give Back to Maui at the Sheraton Maui Resort

T he restoration and rejuvenation of the Maui community continues. The devasting fires are in the past, and the island is looking towards the future. The best way to help Maui now is to plan a visit. In the spirit of giving back, the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa invites guests to show “love” for Maui and to mālama (take care of) Maui through their new offerings. Showing compassion and respect to the island of Maui might be as easy as booking a trip to paradise.

Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa: How Travelers Can Give Back

Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa , situated on 23 oceanfront acres at iconic Pu’u Keka’a (Black Rock), is now open to leisure travelers that the property has considered ohana (family) for more than 60 years. As Maui continues to reopen  after the fires, businesses seek creative ways to host travelers while giving back to the community. The resort team is committed to supporting its still-healing neighbors by asking travelers to support the Maui economy by buying locally, participating in volunteer experiences, and donating to those affected.

This initiative led to the launch of three new Sheraton Maui offerings: the Return to Maui Package, the Malama at Your LEIsure fundraising initiative in collaboration with a local artist, and the Discover More of Maui programming to discover local artisans and destinations.

Your Vacation Can Help Maui Recover

The  Return To Maui Package  is how travelers can show their love and support for the island of Maui by clicking a button and booking. Guests enjoy daily breakfast for two at the resort’s signature restaurant, Coral Reef, $100 resort credit, and a $100 donation per stay to  Maui Imua – Aloha for Sheraton Maui Relief Fund , which goes directly to Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa associates and their families who were impacted by the wildfires. Rates start at $709 per night, with the package available through April 30. Use the promo code SPE.

Guests interested in a commemorative souvenir to remember their trip can donate a minimum of $100 upon check-in and receive a limited edition Hawaiian leis by local artist Danielle Kincaid. Crafted by hand, the leis are made from Burmese wood beads and flower petals molded from polymer clay, featuring pink flowers symbolic of the Maui flower—the Lokelani rose. One hundred percent of each donation goes towards the Maui Imua fund that Kyo-ya Hotels & Resorts created to provide financial assistance to resort associates impacted by the wildfires.

Local Community Impact

Lastly, the Discover More of Maui program is how Sheraton Maui is connecting the local community with guests who want to discover more of the island’s diverse offerings. The resort is launching its “Meet the Artist” initiative, created to support Maui’s community of fine artists following the loss of Front Street in Lahaina, one of the United States’ top-grossing art districts. The “Meet the Artist” series will provide a venue for creators to showcase their work and amplify their vision and expression to travelers of the world.

In addition to those three new offerings, the resort is also adding new resort shuttle routes to encourage guests to find additional restaurant offerings, support island businesses, and experience the beauty of nearby beaches, walking trails, and more. The Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa is a Marriott property and part of Marriott Bonvoy, the Marriott’s highly-awarded travel program. These offerings are fantastic excuses to pack your bags and visit Hawaii , with a trip you can feel good about.

Climate change can be vacation complication for visitors to Savannah, other coastal areas

Winds and rain hit Tybee Island, Georgia on Wednesday, August 30, 2023 as Hurricane Idalia made landfall in Florida.

Climate change cares little about convenience.

Or your summer vacations.

That’s why weather-related events fueled by a warming planet are impacting ― and in some cases, imperiling ― leisure travelers like never before.

Visitors to Hawaii’s resort-rich island of Maui found that out late last summer when nature threw a climatological curveball.

Isolated in the warm Pacific Ocean nearly 3,000 miles west of Mexico, Maui and the rest of Hawaii’s islands are accustomed to severe tropical weather.

Last August, Hurricane Dora missed Hawaii by hundreds of miles as it passed to the south, but remnants of its powerful winds still buffeted Maui and fanned flames that torched more than 2,000 acres turned to tinder in extremely dry weather.

The fire claimed 115 lives and destroyed 2,200 buildings.

It also triggered thousands of cancellations from travelers who had booked vacations on the island in the following weeks and months.

A sudden change in vacation plans pales in comparison to the loss of life, of course. But the tragic Lahaina fire and confluence of phenomenon behind it are reminders that nature ― infused with energy by climate change ― is becoming increasingly unpredictable.

That means booking a trip to Savannah and the South Carolina Lowcountry, where hurricane season coincides with the height of summer tourist traffic, is not quite as safe a bet as it used to be, experts say.

"Climate change significantly impacts the frequency and severity of extreme weather events, including hurricanes,” explained Alejandro Del Valle, a Georgia State University economics professor who studies the financial impact of severe weather. “Vacationing in areas prone to such events, like the Georgia coast during hurricane season, carries increased financial risks.”

This year, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is forecasting an estimated 17 to 25 named Atlantic storms (with winds of at least 39 mph), eight to 13 hurricanes (74 to 110 mph) and four to seven major hurricanes (at least 111 mph).

The Savannah area has not experienced a direct blow from a hurricane since 1979, when David packed 90-mph winds that toppled trees, took down power lines and left 75,000 customers of what was then known as Savannah Electric in the dark. But even a near miss, such as Hurricane Matthew in 2016 , can cause significant storm surge and property damage, and claim lives.

Still, there have been many more misses than hits.

The possibility of a storm can leave potential travelers to coastal areas such Savannah and Hilton Head Island in a vacation no man’s land.

“For example, the Weather Channel s pends five days harping on the possibility of a hurricane hitting our area,” explained Joseph Marinelli, president and CEO of Visit Savannah . “After repeatedly seeing the threat on TV, the consumer decides to cancel or ‘no-show’ because of the threat or concern. Then the ‘hurricane’ instead turns into a minor rain event.”

The traveler asks for a refund but the host refuses because the room can’t be resold.

“Yeah, it’s a tough one,” Marinelli said of the situation.

In fact, climate change could make that kind of dilemma even more common.

Ready or not? Experts fear hurricane complacency in Savannah ahead of expected active season

In hot water

While heightened storm activity increases the odds of a hurricane hitting a particular area, a recent trend in tropical cyclones has added what climate experts consider a frightening new wrinkle.

Oceans absorb most of the heat trapped in the atmosphere by pollution released when fossil fuels are burned for energy or transportation.

The trend led to record-high Atlantic temperatures in 2023, and this year’s readings are pointing to another all-time record.

That’s because warmer oceans pump more energy into storms, causing them to intensify. In some cases, the speed of those power surges is alarming experts.

In August of last year, Hurricane Idalia’s sustained winds strengthened by 55 mph in a 24-hour period as it moved through the Gulf of Mexico before making landfall in Florida and eventually causing damage when as its remnants passed over coastal Georgia.

Nearly one-third of the more than three-dozen named storms in the Atlantic and Pacific basins combined last year experienced “ rapid intensification ” when their wind speeds increased by at least 35 mph in 24 hours.

The trend dilutes forecasters’ ability to accurately predict how strong storms will be when they make landfall.

“For travelers, the inability to foresee and plan for extreme weather events, such as rapidly intensifying hurricanes, can result in unexpected health hazards and disrupted travel plans,” Del Valle said. “This unpredictability will likely force travelers to consider where to travel more carefully, plan in case of an emergency and consider purchasing travel insurance.”

Insurance offers financial insulation from the whims of nature. The price for a typical policy is generally 5% to 6% of the trip's total cost, although a traveler’s age can factor into the total.

"Travel insurance is important for anyone planning a summer or fall vacation,” said Montrae Waiters, a spokeswoman for AAA Georgia . “If severe weather interferes with your travel plans, there are travel insurance policies that reimburse you for covered losses associated with flight delays and cancellations. They can also provide partial or full reimbursement of non-refundable deposits on hotels, cruises, and excursions.”

However, climate change will likely have an outsized impact on trip coverage, just as it has on home coverage in areas battered by past storms and prone to being hit again, Del Valle predicted.

“Travel insurance for high-risk areas due to extreme weather events is becoming increasingly unaffordable,” he said. “As climate change intensifies, insurers adjust their risk assessments and pricing models, leading to higher premiums for destinations prone to extreme weather.”

Some insurers may bale from high-risk markets entirely, Del Valle added.

But climate change also is affecting travel in unexpected places.

Late last summer, 70,000 people attending the Burning Man festival in the Nevada desert were stranded by, of all things, severe flooding from an unexpected deluge.

Also last summer, travelers to New York City experienced what was classified as the worst air quality in the world when smoke from Canadian wildfires hundreds of miles away shrouded the area and obscured the iconic skyline.

Feeling the heat: Savannah has gotten 2 degrees warmer this century; thank climate change

Be prepared

In the end, it's up to travelers to protect themselves against weather-related events, said Del Valle.

“First, familiarize yourself with the area you are visiting and the risks it faces from natural disasters,” he suggested. "And choose travel dates outside known high-risk seasons, such as avoiding the hurricane season for coastal destinations.”

He also recommended making refundable bookings, being flexible with travel dates and, of course, buying insurance, he added.

“But it's crucial to read the contract carefully to understand what is covered and when,” he cautioned. “Purchase the policy ahead of your trip (because) buying insurance after a storm has been named will not cover that event.”

When reaching the destination, come up with an emergency plan, and make sure to have essential supplies and medications on hand.

And finally, now more than ever, expect the unexpected.
