Testimonials

” I would like to take this opportunity to thank your for organizing the trip to Orlando for the West Orange Music Department. The trip was considered a major success. From the planning stages to the last day, you played a major role in making this an experience to remember for all of our staff and students. Your professionalism is acknowledged by the way you provided us with the many options to choose from and by working within the budget of the student population. Every detail while we were in Florida was handled in a way which enabled the staff to focus on their responsibilities. I would also like to express my gratitude for your assistance with our emergency situation on the last day. You played an important role I assisting Mr. Kelly during this time of need. I appreciate you taking the time to obtain the flight for the student who became ill and the accompanying staff. It’s comforting to know that we are working with a true professional as yourself. I look forward to planning future trips with you and your company. “

Art in Tribeca: “Shake These Bones”

May 21, 2024 • Arts & Culture

Tribecan Amy Sewell , who wrote and made the film “Mad Hot Ballroom,” has produced another film about local dancers — this time a documentary about Gibney Company , the dance troupe that has been on Chambers and Broadway for the past decade. “ Shake These Bones” sold out at the Big Apple Film Festival this week and is now on its way to the Seattle Film Festival — a biggie.

“Mad Hot Ballroom” was her story about local kids learning ballroom dancing at PS 150 that she originally wrote for the Tribeca Trib and then turned into a documentary in 2005. And this is another Tribeca origin story, tracing Gibney’s preparation as it doubles the size of its ensemble to present a World Premiere Program at the Joyce Theater.

Sewell at first didn’t think it could come together. “Exec producer Bethany Menzies came to me in December of 2019 and said she wanted to make an impact film. I was pessimistic and told her it would cost at least $250K, one third to start,” Sewell recounted. “In January 2020 she called with the $. I was flabbergasted. Plus this film WAS and IS totally Tribeca.”

travel art dance company

The documentary spans the company’s journey through the pandemic to opening night in November 2021. The film was produced by Sewell and Menzies, directed by Olga Lvoff with cinematography by Daniel Kharlak. Backing was secured by January 2020 and production began in late February. Two weeks later, the city was on lockdown. Still, the show went on.

Gibney Company was founded 1991 by choreographer Gina Gibney as a socially active dance company with a single dance studio in midtown. By the time the company acquired its second location here at 280 Broadway in 2014, it had expanded to 23 studios, five performance spaces, and 52,000 square feet of space.

travel art dance company

Following its 25th anniversary in 2016, the organization re-envisioned Gibney Company to better support its dancers. Now known as Artistic Associates, company members receive 52-week contracts, health insurance, on-site physical therapy, an annual artistic sabbatical, and paid vacation.

The company also commissions work in addition to performing Gina Gibney’s choreography, including pieces from Bryan Arias, Shannon Gillen, Shamel Pitts, Adam Barruch, Chanel DaSilva, Bobbi Jene Smith, Micaela Taylor, Stefanie Batten Bland, Peter Chu, Banning Bouldin, Mark Caserta and Yin Yue. And in January 2020, the company received a $2 million gift from Andrew A. Davis, a trustee of the Shelby Cullom Davis Charitable Fund.

“A Midsummer Night’s Dream” presented by Bainbridge Performing Arts

Perhaps the platonic ideal of an outdoor theater experience, Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” will come to life on the picturesque grounds of the Bloedel Reserve on Bainbridge Island. If a magical world filled with romantic intrigue and comic mischief somehow isn’t endearing enough, a beautiful nature preserve standing in for the play’s enchanted forest ought to do it.

“The Two Gentlemen of Verona” presented by Seattle Shakespeare Company’s Wooden O

You’ll have plenty of chances to catch this year’s Wooden O production, with performances in Seattle-area parks most Wednesday-Sunday nights for six weeks. This year, Seattle Shakes takes on one of the Bard’s earliest plays, “The Two Gentlemen of Verona,” in which a pair of friends vie for the affections of the same woman.

GreenStage’s Shakespeare in the Park, Backyard Bard and Seattle Outdoor Theater Festival

Seattle’s other outdoor Shakespeare stalwart GreenStage continues the War of the Roses history saga it began last year, this year presenting “Henry VI: Part 2” and “Part 3.” Didn’t catch the first part and don’t want to join the story in progress? The company is also staging “Twelfth Night,” arguably Shakespeare’s best comedy. As usual, two abbreviated Backyard Bard stagings will be offered for those who prefer Bill bite-sized: “All’s Well That Ends Well” and “Julius Caesar.” Touring around Seattle-area parks, the GreenStage productions will also anchor the Seattle Outdoor Theater Festival at Volunteer Park from July 13-14.

“The Lucky Chance” and “King Lear” at Island Shakespeare Festival

Island Shakespeare Festival offers two compelling reasons to visit Whidbey Island this summer. First is Restoration-era comedy “The Lucky Chance,” written by Aphra Behn, one of the first women to make a living as a writer. Presented in association with Brooklyn-based Expand the Canon, which seeks to highlight underrepresented classic plays, “The Lucky Chance” is directed by Julie Beckman. And playing in repertory throughout the summer is Shakespeare’s towering masterpiece “King Lear,” directed by Terri McMahon.

“The Lucky Chance” runs July 19-Sept. 8 and “King Lear” runs July 27-Sept. 7; 5476 Maxwelton Road, Langley; $15-$50; 360-209-3372, islandshakespearefest.org

“We’ll Remember Your Spine, Matr” from Velocity Dance Theater

Choreographed by Jasmine Hearn and featuring members of the Seattle Festival of Dance + Improvisation professional cohort, “We’ll Remember Your Spine, Matr” is a site-specific performance that considers the land coordinates of downtown’s Freeway Park. As part of Velocity’s summer intensive, the performance is a response to the prompt: “What do I listen to in order to arrive and depart as a keeper of this place and its collective memory?”

July 20, 6 p.m.; Freeway Park, 700 Seneca St., Seattle; free with RSVP online ; velocitydancecenter.org

“Fallen Angels” presented by Burien Actors Theatre

If fizzy farce is your preferred summer performance mood, look to Burien Actors Theatre’s South King County park performances of Noël Coward’s “Fallen Angels,” in which two married women try to keep their premarital dalliance with the same man a secret from their husbands. Once derided by censors in early 20th-century Britain for its sexual themes, “Fallen Angels” is presented by BAT in what it’s calling a “family-friendly” production.

Pop-up performances from Whim W’Him

Contemporary dance company Whim W’Him presents its fifth season of outdoor programming — a series of performances in parks across Seattle, and at Bumbershoot (Aug. 31-Sept. 1). The troupe’s innovative and abstract dances range from the political to the playful, built on a mission of exploring the human condition through movement.

Ashley Steeves has been creating original content for Resurgence Dance Company for over 10 years. Each season brings a new theme, story or idea to the stage, interpreted by contemporary dancers that follow a similar outline to musical theater shows.

This season, Steeves decided to keep sets, props and even the number of dancers very minimal to tell a story about personality disorders and how they manifest in adulthood. The personality disorder that is the focus of this production is narcissism and how it can affect everyone in a family or group.

Members of the company have had many talks to find the delicate balance of sharing a story and honoring people who are experiencing it in real time. The cast and crew talked about being sensitive and caring towards those who suffer from the disorder, how to find peace if they find themselves struggling, and how to create healthy boundaries if someone close to them has the disorder.

The name “Resurgence” was chosen because the dance company offers adults who may have had previous dance experiences in their youth an opportunity to take up dance once again. Portland-based Vivid Motion was “a huge inspiration for creating this dance company in the Midcoast,” Steeves said. This summer, adult dance classes will be offered on Wednesday evenings at Bath Dance Works.

“The focus on these classes will be contemporary and partnering, a great skill to work on as an adult dancer,” she said. “These classes are for adults who may be new to partnering or have years of experience.” For more information, email Steeves at [email protected].

The “Art 3 X 3” exhibit, which opened last month at the CCAC Gallery, continues through June 8, featuring Scott Cunningham’s photography, Penelope Jones’ collages and painting, and Mary McKone’s ceramics. For more information about this or upcoming shows, call 442-8455, go to chocolatechurcharts.org or visit the CCAC office at 804 Washington St. in Bath.

Lawmaker probes whether major oil companies are coordinating with OPEC to keep gas prices high

FILE - What you pay at the pump will be studied by a lawmaker who is concerned about possible...

(Gray News) - A House lawmaker says he’s investigating whether big oil is colluding with OPEC to keep gas prices high.

Rep. Frank Pallone Jr., the ranking member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, sent a letter to ExxonMobil, Chevron, Hess, BP America and three other fossil fuel companies demanding a trove of documents and communications.

The New Jersey Democrat said he wants to find out if prices are being artificially inflated to boost profits while harming American consumers who pay more at the pump.

The new probe comes in the wake of recent revelations from a Federal Trade Commission investigation into Scott Sheffield, the former CEO of Pioneer Natural Resources Company, who allegedly attempted to illegally coordinate oil production levels with OPEC and competitors to drive up prices at the pump, the letter said.

Pallone said he’s “concerned that Mr. Sheffield’s behavior may represent common practices across the industry, as reporting and the FTC complaint have suggested. Simply put, I am worried that Mr. Sheffield’s actions, rather than being ‘entirely inconsistent with how we do business,’ as Exxon has claimed, are instead industry-standard practice — directly contradicting what the largest oil companies, including Pioneer and Exxon, testified to the Committee last Congress.”

The oil companies have until June 5 to respond.

This probe comes as President Joe Biden decided to release 1 million barrels of gasoline from the Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve in the coming weeks from storage sites in New Jersey and Maine in an attempt to lower prices at the pump ahead of summer travel season, the Associated Press reported. An expert said the move will have little impact on prices nationally but may help decrease them in the Northeast.

Republicans in Congress have long criticized the reserve, created by President Barack Obama, saying it should’ve been created by Congress.

According to AAA , Wednesday’s national average for a gallon of gas is $3.611, up from $3.540 a year ago.

Help! Our Cruise Operator Went Bankrupt and We Are Out $17,905.

A couple purchased an Arabian Sea voyage, but Vantage, the cruise company, went under. Their travel insurance was supposed to cover financial default, but the claim was repeatedly denied.

An illustration of a dollar bill folded up to resemble a boat sinking in a whirlpool in a sea of green.

By Seth Kugel

Dear Tripped Up,

In September 2022, I booked a 17-day Arabian Sea cruise through Vantage Travel Services to celebrate my 80th birthday with my wife. The cruise was to set sail in October 2023. I used my credit card to leave a $2,000 deposit and paid the remaining $17,905 shortly afterward by bank transfer. I also bought the Worldwide Trip Protector plan from Travel Insured International (for $1,954), in part because it covered financial default and bankruptcy of cruise lines. Vantage then canceled the cruise and offered me an alternative date I could not make; I also declined their offer of credit and asked for a refund, which they agreed to. But no refund ever came, and they stopped answering the phone. My credit card returned the $2,000, and I filed an insurance claim for $17,905. It was denied, as was my first appeal. Then Vantage filed for bankruptcy, and my second appeal was denied too. The reasons given by the insurer were outrageous. They cited a vague parenthetical phrase in the policy’s bankruptcy clause, claiming I wasn’t covered because I purchased the cruise directly from the cruise line (rather than, say, through a travel adviser). Then they said my policy lapsed when I canceled the trip. But I did not cancel; Vantage did. I also filed a complaint with the New York State Department of Financial Services, which was rejected. Can you help? Michael, Smithtown, N.Y.

Dear Michael,

When Boston-based Vantage filed for bankruptcy last year, it owed thousands of customers a total of $108 million for cruises and other travel products they had paid for but never received. The company’s former owner is facing lawsuits in New York and Pennsylvania. But you had purchased an insurance policy to cover just such a risk, a smart move. Or so you thought until the insurance company, Travel Insured International, denied your claim and then used exasperating logic to fend off your two appeals, first interpreting the policy’s financial default and bankruptcy clause in a maddening way and then twisting the meaning of the word “cancel.”

You made a few mistakes as well — most notably, by making a claim based on a financial default that had not yet happened. But after speaking with law professors, insurance experts and competing insurance companies, I believe Travel Insured International was wrong, at least by the time of your second appeal, and should pay up.

What does it have to say for itself? For nearly five months, Travel Insured International and its parent company, Crum & Forster, did not respond to my detailed inquiries. Days before publication, however, a spokeswoman, Amy Whilldin, sent the following statement:

“The claim was properly considered, and the correct determination was made based on the facts of this claim, which was to the satisfaction of both the New York Department of Financial Services and the New York State attorney general.”

Ms. Whilldin is correct about the state’s financial services department . An examiner with the department, which regulates the insurance industry, rejected your complaint. “After a review of the policy language," he wrote, “we do not find they are acting in an arbitrary or capricious manner,” referring to Travel Insured International. I disagree with that determination, as we are about to get into.

But the attorney general’s office was not satisfied. You had complained to its Department of Consumer Frauds and Protection, and they did not receive a response from the company. “Despite our repeated efforts,” an employee wrote, “they have failed to respond.” The letter goes on to recommend you consider suing the company.

I have a better idea. You should file a formal grievance with Travel Insured International, which under your policy allows you to submit new evidence, and if that fails even argue your case in person. (You told me you are not interested in a third option, to accept travel credits under the conditions offered by the Australian company that bought Vantage’s assets.)

In the meantime, your story provides great lessons on how travelers should choose the appropriate travel insurance policy, and what can go wrong even when they do.

In your initial claim to Travel Insured International, filed in late 2022, you cited Vantage’s “very poor record” in refunding its customers and your “assumption that the company is in default in making payments.”

This was an error: Your policy defines financial default as “the total cessation of operations,” and Vantage at the time was running at least some cruises. Travel Insured International’s response simply said that “your travel supplier canceling your trip is not a covered reason.” True.

When you first appealed in April, Vantage was two months short of declaring bankruptcy outright, and was not yet in financial default as defined by the policy. But it was teetering. (That one of its cruises left at all made headlines in The Boston Globe .) This time, Travel Insured International denied your claim, citing the bankruptcy clause, which protects policy holders in case of “Bankruptcy or default of an airline, cruise line, tour operator or other travel provider (other than the Travel Supplier, tour operator, travel agency, organization or firm from whom you purchased your travel arrangements).”

That parenthetical says you are not covered if the organization that sold you the cruise goes bankrupt. You purchased the cruise directly from Vantage, so you are not covered, according to the claims adjuster’s reasoning. (Why the company even cited this clause, if the cruise line was not yet in default, remains a mystery.)

Similar clauses appear in many travel policies, but that’s not what they’re supposed to mean, said Loretta Worters, vice president for media relations at the Insurance Information Institute , an industry group.

Such provisions, she explained, are intended to exclude coverage for an unscrupulous or financially flailing middleman that goes belly-up after collecting your money but before passing it along to the actual travel provider.

“Some of these are fly-by-night, travel-agencies-in-their-kitchen kinds of things,” Ms. Worters said. ( We encountered one such agency in a previous Tripped Up column .)

Guess who agreed with Ms. Worters: The agent who answered the phone when I called Travel Insured International’s customer care line as a potential customer. I asked about the clause and she agreed it was ambiguous, checking with a supervisor before saying: “If you are booking directly with the company and the company itself goes under default or bankruptcy, you would be able to file a claim for the nonrefundable portion of your trip.”

Ms. Whilldin, the spokeswoman for Travel Insured International, did not specifically answer my question about this apparent conflict. But it seems their claims adjuster made a mistake, aided by the ambiguous language of the underwriter who wrote the policy. (That’s United States Fire Insurance, another Crum & Forster company.)

Now, let’s discuss the second appeal. “Once you cancel your trip, the coverage under the plan ends,” Travel Insured International said. Your argument is that you did not cancel; Vantage did.

I think almost anyone who isn’t a lawyer would agree with you. But Oren Bar-Gill , a professor at Harvard Law School and the author of “Seduction by Contract: Law, Economics and Psychology in Consumer Markets,” explained to me the opposing argument. Vantage was contractually allowed to change the dates or offer credit, and you refused, the equivalent of canceling.

But, he added, when Vantage agreed to refund your cruise, it could be “considered a waiver of their contractual rights,” weakening the argument that you canceled your contract.

In a lawsuit New York State filed against the now-defunct Vantage and its former owner, Henry Lewis, the issue also comes up: The suit says Vantage “deceptively” mislabeled cancellations as “postponements.”

Even Travel Insured International admitted that Vantage had canceled, in its original letter rejecting your claim. “It is our understanding that your travel supplier, Vantage, canceled your cruise,” the claims adjuster wrote. Somehow, however, by the third response you had gone from cancelee to canceler.

You also missed a red flag when you chose your policy. Suzanne Morrow, the chief executive of InsureMyTrip , where you found your plan, told me you called the company within minutes of your purchase and asked an agent to point you to the bankruptcy clause. (You confirmed this to me.)

That means you’re not the typical insurance customer blindsided by small print you never read. If you were so concerned about the cruise line’s solvency, you could have canceled your plan during the insurer’s “free look” period and chosen one with more straightforward language — I found several on the InsureMyTrip website.

What lessons can we take away from your debacle?

To begin with, pay for everything with a credit card when your credit limit allows. Because of an odd quirk in a 1974 law , card issuers are required to reimburse you if the company you interacted with goes bankrupt.

Beyond that, the basic advice for travel insurance remains unchanged: Shop for a plan separately through a provider you trust or an aggregator like InsureMyTrip, rather than adding trip protection by checking a box just before you purchase a big-ticket item. Read the policy summaries fully and click through to the actual policy document to read fine print on issues that concern you most (say, bankruptcy protection or medical coverage for pre-existing conditions).

If you don’t understand anything, call the company. If it cannot answer satisfactorily and follow up in writing, choose another provider.

If you need advice about a best-laid travel plan that went awry, send an email to [email protected] .
