Car journeys with the pooch are not always easy.

Taking one too many right turns can somehow alert even the tiniest of pups to an incoming trip to the vet, while longer journeys can make restless dogs clamber dangerously over gear sticks and steering wheels in the hope for some attention.

Likewise, while we all love to see our dog’s joyous, goofy grin with their head and tongue wagging in the wind, this isn’t exactly the safest of driving habits – especially when it comes to A-roads and motorways.

Though some dog-owners might think that crate-training is only useful when it comes to ensuring your pup is able to sleep securely by themselves, crates are just as important when it comes to providing safety and comfort on the go as they are at home.

That said, the extra-large crate that you bought for your dog to ‘grow into’ probably won’t fit in your car boot. You’ll need a second option which is equipped with either sloped sides or a collapsible, soft fabric material if you’re thinking about driving around the UK with your furry friend in tow. Once you’ve trained them to get into a crate in the first place, that is.

If you’re not convinced that a car crate is the way forward, consider this. In the event of a car accident, a sturdy crate will help to keep your pet safe and minimise potential harm caused by the impact.

Plus, from an aesthetic and allergy-driven perspective, keeping your dog in a crate during car journeys prevents dog hair from re-upholstering your car seats.

Not only are you keeping your dog safe while on the move in a crate, but you’re also limiting the shedding clean-up to one spot. Easy as pie.

Should I Crate Train My Dog?

The sentence heard most often when crate or cage training is first suggested to new or existing owners is, ‘Isn’t it cruel?’

Absolutely not is the answer. A crate will become a space a dog can consider its own, a comfortable place to relax if tired and a safe one to retreat to if anxious. By nature dogs seek out small places and spaces to curl up in.

What are the benefits of crate training?

The biggest benefit is safety. If your dog is happy to settle in a crate whilst you are out there will be no chance of him harming himself by getting into things he should not, or by the same token harming any lovely furniture! Also dogs that travel crated in vehicles stand a much better of survival in a car accident than those sat on back seat or in the boot. But just as importantly there is little chance of them causing one by bouncing around loose as a distraction.

A crate helps with training. As previously mentioned any destructiveness can be avoided. But using one aids toilet training, as the restricted freedom and space will help pup ask to go out as most dogs don’t want to soil their own space. Most dog owners know that worrying feeling during house breaking when puppy has gone quiet and out of sight!

Being controlled and happy in a crate helps a dog be a great pet. He is happy to go away and settle if non pet friendly visitors or small children visit, he’s not concerned about being crated if he ever needs to stay in over night for veterinary treatment or has to visit kennels when you take a holiday.

Prior to your journey you should give your pet only a light meal and the opportunity to urinate and defecate before it’s placed in its container.

During the flight your pet will be stored in the aircraft's hold, where it will be safe and secure in a temperature-controlled environment. The hold is unlit as our experience shows that pets quickly settle down and travel better in the dark.

Provided that your pet complies with the pre-entry requirements, there should be no difficulties when it comes to re-entry. However, it is also advisable to have your vet check that the microchip is readable, as sometimes these migrate around the body.

Minimum requirement for cats departing from the USA and Canada only, is a 200 kennel (200 series kennel = L27" x W20" x H19", L68cm x W50cm x H48cm).

For all other countries, series 100 kennels are acceptable.

Minimum requirement for snub-nosed dogs and cats is a 10% larger container than the minimum.

The container must be strong enough to protect your pet during transport, be secure enough to contain it and have sufficient ventilation on all four sides, to ensure the air quality in the container will not deteriorate.

The door must be secured in such a manner that it will not open accidentally or your pet cannot open it during handling and transport.

Your pet's nose and paws should not be able to fit through any ventilation opening or door mesh.

The container must have a water pot accessible from the outside.

The water pot must be secured and in proportion to the size of the pet but not take up too much of the floor space.

Fibreboard, wire mesh and wicker containers are not suitable for air transportation.

These dimensions are the minimum internal dimensions, please allow extra room if you are placing a blanket or bedding into the kennel. Pets must be able to stand and sit erect without touching the top of the kennel and turn around comfortably.
