When Jen Roth was in her junior year at the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, she packed up her luggage for a study abroad stint in London. 

That might seem like a normal rite of passage for a college student, but Roth, at the age of 9, was diagnosed with systemic Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, an affliction that causes joint inflammation and stiffness. In the years since, she’s had 14 surgeries and eight joint replacements. 

“I cannot believe my parents let me go to London,” she said. “There were no phones, there was no social media. They sent me with a ginormous bag full of medicine and a backpack.” 

The trip changed her life. 

“It made such a difference,” she said. “It taught me that I am independent and that I can do this.” 

And it led to a love for travel that has taken her around the world. Now, after several years in corporate marketing and a stint co-owning her own marketing firm, Roth is putting all of these experiences together with Wise Blue Yonder, which curates travel experiences and has a subscription-based web portal available with information aimed at making travel more accessible. 

“After many, many years of fighting my disability and my disease, I now consider it a gift,” she said. “I got it for a reason and this is why. It’s taking my life experience with a disease a chronic condition, my love for travel and my success in corporate Americana bringing something to life that will help the world.” 

Getting started 

It’s been a long, winding road for Roth, who enjoyed her stint in the corporate world and met a lot of friends and mentors while there, but was probably destined to become an entrepreneur all along. 

She grew up in Storm Lake, Iowa, a rural town with a big family. Her father ran his own accounting and law firm. Roth started at the College of St. Benedict as an accounting major, switching to English for her undergraduate degree when she realized finances were not her strong suit. She went on to get a master’s degree in business communication at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul. 

Roth went on to work for companies including CIGNA, United Health Group and Ceridian, the latter of which was where she worked her way into several senior executive roles. But when constant travel was getting in the way of spending time with a new husband and two children, she decided to start her own corporate consulting firm. 

Ultimately, she and her partner at GrowthMode Marketing built the company onto the Inc. 5000 Fastest Growing Private Companies list. This is where a friend helped her get involved with Entrepreneurs’ Organization-Minnesota (EO), as she was seeking some guidance as the firm grew. 

“We had signed a couple really big new clients that were going to double our business in a few months’ time,” she said. “We did not know how to manage it. I was talking to a friend who’s an entrepreneur and he said, ‘You need to join EO.’ I said OK.” 

Selling and starting anew  

Her group there helped GrowthMode grow significantly, advising and coaching her through the COVID pandemic, general growth and eventually the sale of her business. 

While she was all in on GrowthMode expand, Roth had long dreamed of creating Wise Old Yonder. So, in 2022 she sold her stake in the marketing company to her business partner and, that same year, started the new venture. 

“We provide travel solutions for senior travelers and travelers with limited mobility,” she said. “It’s our mission to provide fully curated travel experiences designed for people of all abilities.” 

Wise Blue Yonder does small group tours. They’re spending a week in London later this year. The company also raised money through donations and through subscription access to its still-being-built Travel Resource Center database of information. 

“It’s a dynamic resource for collecting information about how to plan travel if you have limited mobility,” said Roth, who was inspired not just by her own journey but by stories she’s collected over the years of folks with mobility challenges getting incorrect information when calling ahead about accessibility or simply being turned off of travel due to embarrassment or inconvenience. 

She has had a tremendous time traveling the world but has been on the wrong end of such experiences, as well. 

“We specialize in creating itineraries that allow every person, regardless of ability, to have a good time,” Roth said. 

So far, she’s the only official employee, but she’s working with a web developer, a representative from a corporate travel and incentives business, some content people and a travel concierge on a contract basis as the site ramps up. She doesn’t know exactly where the business is headed, but she’s excited for the journey. 

“When you are open to what sits in front of you, and you have an open mind, it’s amazing where the world will take you,” she said. “One of my favorite quotes is, ‘You don’t have to know where you’re going to be headed in the right direction.’ I just think that’s so true.” 

Back into marketing  

Roth always intended to do fractional marketing work as she established Wise Blue Yonder. But as that company was coming to fruition, she was contacted by some former employees and clients asking if she would ever consider starting another firm. So, she started Blue Sparq Marketing. The firm is a full-service agency and it supports Wise Blue Yonder. 

“We have a great team and we have great clients and we’re growing steadily and safely,” she said. 

Plenty busy already, Roth is also more committed to EO than ever. She recently took over as the local chapter president with goals of diversifying the local entrepreneurial community. She helped plan the popular Entrepreneur’s Rally held earlier this month in Bloomington that drew several hundred business owners. 

Previous president, Patrick Donohue, CEO of Hill Capital Corp., called Roth one of the most dynamic entrepreneurs he knows. He said like many entrepreneurs, she is a visionary leader, but she’s one who has the capability to actually execute the plans, as well. 

“That’s the key,” he said, adding that those skills have helped as EO has attempted to become a more inclusive organization, serving both members and others who are not officially tied to the organization. “Jen leans into that and we’re able to collaborate, partner with a number of organizations to make sure that all entrepreneurs are welcome.” 

Roth is particularly busy this year but thrilled to be where she is, supporting an organization that helped her and building a company she thinks can help make the world better.

“That’s truly the legacy I want to leave,” she said. “I want to build the difference I want to make.”

Expedia announces new programs to benefit tourists and local communities: 'A travel industry that prioritizes both people and the planet'

Expedia is launching two new sustainable travel initiatives to help tourists be more eco-conscious and support local communities. 

According to a report on Edie , Expedia and the Travel Foundation have partnered to create the Destination Climate Champions program. 

This groundbreaking initiative will instill in the staff of companies that promote destinations — also known as destination management organizations (DMOs) — the knowledge and skills to develop climate action plans for specific destinations.

It's in the pilot phase in 30 destinations in the northwest U.S., Europe, and New Zealand. There are plans to expand it globally later this year.

Vice President of Expedia Group Media Solutions Rob Torres said, "Our partnership with Travel Foundation reflects our shared vision of a travel industry that prioritizes both people and the planet."

The second program, called Destination Giveback, supports local communities. Expedia and DMO partners donate to local causes to aid marketing and boost tourism. For example, Expedia Group donated $100,000 to Destination Canada and the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada to increase Indigenous tourism.

Expedia is launching the initiatives because of research from its Expedia Group Media Solutions. The company found that 90% of travelers seek sustainable travel options, and half are willing to pay more for those.

Tourism's impact on the plant is not insignificant. It accounts for 8% of polluting gases globally, but it is expected to increase to 6.5 billion metric tons by 2025, a 44% increase from 2013. These programs will help tackle the growing effect on the climate. 

The Destination Giveback program can help bring in more tourism money for local communities, which will benefit the residents of the cities by boosting the economy. Also, creating sustainable practices will create a healthier community for all tourist destinations by cutting back on polluting gases. It's a win-win for travelers and local residents. 

These programs are not standalone initiatives. They have grown out of Expedia Group's larger climate goals, which the company revealed in its Climate Action Plan last year. The plan underscores the company's commitment to reaching net-zero emissions by 2040. 

More brands are creating sustainable initiatives. Take Alaska Airlines , for instance, which offers its customers an option to buy sustainable aviation fuel credits while earning mileage points.

Travelsoft Acquires Three Travel Tech Companies

The CEO of Travelsoft said earlier this month that more acquisitions were coming.

Travelsoft said Thursday that it has acquired three tech companies. France-based Travelsoft is primarily focused on providing tech to travel agents and tour operators that streamlines the process of selling and marketing travel packages. 

The three companies Travelsoft acquired offer business-to-business services in that space:

• Spain-based TravelgateX offers a tech platform that connects lodging suppliers with sellers. 
• UK-based Atcore Technology offers a reservation and inventory platform for tour operators as well as tech to package, price and distribute travel packages.
• Romania-based Travel Connection Technology offers a tech platform to integrate contracting, inventory management, sales channels, booking management, and financial accounts.

Each of the companies will maintain autonomy, Travelsoft said. That includes keeping brand names, leadership teams, and their tech platforms.

The acquisition prices were not disclosed, but here are a few other details:

• The deal nearly triples Travelsoft’s employee base to 600.
• Travelsoft says its platforms now facilitate bookings worth a total of €35 billion ($37.9 billion). Before the deal, that number was €5 billion ($5.4 billion).
• The company said it now has recurring revenues totaling €100 million ($108.3 million) annually, up from €43 million ($46.6 million).
• Travelsoft now has 400 major clients, up from 300, as well as 1,000 travel suppliers, up from 600

An Acquisition Spree

This is the sixth acquisition for Travelsoft since 2022 – there are now seven companies under the group’s umbrella.

Travelsoft earlier this year acquired Eventiz Group , which owns three publications and hosts events geared toward the French tourism and business travel industry. The company had been struggling financially and was following a court-supervised restructuring process and a plan to pay back its creditors.

Travelsoft’s first portfolio company was Orchestra, and then it acquired Germany-based Traffics in 2022 and Spain-based Travel Compositor in 2023 . 

Private investment firm Capza invested in Travelsoft in 2023 and became a minor shareholder. That investment has enabled Travelsoft’s acquisition spree, the company said.

Industry experts are saying that the industry is ripe for consolidation, and that’s been showed with multiple deal announcements over the past few weeks alone. Hotel tech startup Mews, for example, made its ninth acquistion this month.

Investment bank AGC Partners is among those that believe merger and acquisition activity is on the rise. The company published an analysis on the topic last month that said the pieces are in place for more deals.

Those pieces include an improving funding environment and the fact that tech private equity firms have about $300 billion to deploy, AGC said. “The real action is yet to come,” AGC stated.

Among their strategies, those firms are investing in companies like Mews and Travelsoft to finance their growth via acquisition.

A Groundbreaking Scientific Discovery Just Created the Instruction Manual for Light-Speed Travel

In a first for warp drives, this research actually obeys the laws of physics.

If a superluminal—meaning faster than the speed of light—warp drive like Alcubierre’s worked, it would revolutionize humanity’s endeavors across the universe , allowing us, perhaps, to reach Alpha Centauri, our closest star system, in days or weeks even though it’s four light years away.

The clip above from the 2016 film Star Trek Beyond showcases the effect of a starship zipping through space inside a faster-than-light warp bubble. You can see the imagined but hypothetically accurate warping of spacetime.

However, the Alcubierre drive has a glaring problem: the force behind its operation, called “negative energy,” involves exotic particles—hypothetical matter that, as far as we know, doesn’t exist in our universe. Described only in mathematical terms, exotic particles act in unexpected ways, like having negative mass and working in opposition to gravity (in fact, it has “anti-gravity”). For the past 30 years, scientists have been publishing research that chips away at the inherent hurdles to light speed revealed in Alcubierre’s foundational 1994 article published in the peer-reviewed journal Classical and Quantum Gravity .

Now, researchers at the New York City-based think tank Applied Physics believe they’ve found a creative new approach to solving the warp drive’s fundamental roadblock. Along with colleagues from other institutions, the team envisioned a “positive energy” system that doesn’t violate the known laws of physics . It’s a game-changer, say two of the study’s authors: Gianni Martire, CEO of Applied Physics, and Jared Fuchs, Ph.D., a senior scientist there. Their work, also published in Classical and Quantum Gravity in late April, could be the first chapter in the manual for interstellar spaceflight.

Positive energy makes all the difference. Imagine you are an astronaut in space, pushing a tennis ball away from you. Instead of moving away, the ball pushes back, to the point that it would “take your hand off” if you applied enough pushing force, Martire tells Popular Mechanics . That’s a sign of negative energy, and, though the Alcubierre drive design requires it, there’s no way to harness it.

Instead, regular old positive energy is more feasible for constructing the “ warp bubble .” As its name suggests, it’s a spherical structure that surrounds and encloses space for a passenger ship using a shell of regular—but incredibly dense—matter. The bubble propels the spaceship using the powerful gravity of the shell, but without causing the passengers to feel any acceleration. “An elevator ride would be more eventful,” Martire says.

That’s because the density of the shell, as well as the pressure it exerts on the interior, is controlled carefully, Fuchs tells Popular Mechanics . Nothing can travel faster than the speed of light, according to the gravity-bound principles of Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity . So the bubble is designed such that observers within their local spacetime environment—inside the bubble—experience normal movement in time. Simultaneously, the bubble itself compresses the spacetime in front of the ship and expands it behind the ship, ferrying itself and the contained craft incredibly fast. The walls of the bubble generate the necessary momentum, akin to the momentum of balls rolling, Fuchs explains. “It’s the movement of the matter in the walls that actually creates the effect for passengers on the inside.”

Building on its 2021 paper published in Classical and Quantum Gravity —which details the same researchers’ earlier work on physical warp drives—the team was able to model the complexity of the system using its own computational program, Warp Factory. This toolkit for modeling warp drive spacetimes allows researchers to evaluate Einstein’s field equations and compute the energy conditions required for various warp drive geometries. Anyone can download and use it for free . These experiments led to what Fuchs calls a mini model, the first general model of a positive-energy warp drive. Their past work also demonstrated that the amount of energy a warp bubble requires depends on the shape of the bubble; for example, the flatter the bubble in the direction of travel, the less energy it needs.

☄️ DID YOU KNOW? People have been imagining traveling as fast as light for nearly a century, if not longer. The 1931 novel Islands of Space by John W. Campbell mentions a “warp” method in the context of superluminal space travel.

This latest advancement suggests fresh possibilities for studying warp travel design, Erik Lentz, Ph.D., tells Popular Mechanics . In his current position as a staff physicist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Washington, Lentz contributes to research on dark matter detection and quantum information science research. His independent research in warp drive theory also aims to be grounded in conventional physics while reimagining the shape of warped space. The topic needs to overcome many practical hurdles, he says.

Controlling warp bubbles requires a great deal of coordination because they involve enormous amounts of matter and energy to keep the passengers safe and with a similar passage of time as the destination. “We could just as well engineer spacetime where time passes much differently inside [the passenger compartment] than outside. We could miss our appointment at Proxima Centauri if we aren’t careful,” Lentz says. “That is still a risk if we are traveling less than the speed of light.” Communication between people inside the bubble and outside could also become distorted as it passes through the curvature of warped space, he adds.

While Applied Physics’ current solution requires a warp drive that travels below the speed of light, the model still needs to plug in a mass equivalent to about two Jupiters. Otherwise, it will never achieve the gravitational force and momentum high enough to cause a meaningful warp effect. But no one knows what the source of this mass could be—not yet, at least. Some research suggests that if we could somehow harness dark matter , we could use it for light-speed travel, but Fuchs and Martire are doubtful, since it’s currently a big mystery (and an exotic particle).

Despite the many problems scientists still need to solve to build a working warp drive, the Applied Physics team claims its model should eventually get closer to light speed. And even if a feasible model remains below the speed of light, it’s a vast improvement over today’s technology. For example, traveling at even half the speed of light to Alpha Centauri would take nine years. In stark contrast, our fastest spacecraft, Voyager 1—currently traveling at 38,000 miles per hour—would take 75,000 years to reach our closest neighboring star system.

Of course, as you approach the actual speed of light, things get truly weird, according to the principles of Einstein’s special relativity . The mass of an object moving faster and faster would increase infinitely, eventually requiring an infinite amount of energy to maintain its speed.

“That’s the chief limitation and key challenge we have to overcome—how can we have all this matter in our [bubble], but not at such a scale that we can never even put it together?” Martire says. It’s possible the answer lies in condensed matter physics, he adds. This branch of physics deals particularly with the forces between atoms and electrons in matter. It has already proven fundamental to several of our current technologies, such as transistors, solid-state lasers, and magnetic storage media.

The other big issue is that current models allow a stable warp bubble, but only for a constant velocity. Scientists still need to figure out how to design an initial acceleration. On the other end of the journey, how will the ship slow down and stop? “It’s like trying to grasp the automobile for the first time,” Martire says. “We don’t have an engine just yet, but we see the light at the end of the tunnel.” Warp drive technology is at the stage of 1882 car technology, he says: when automobile travel was possible, but it still looked like a hard, hard problem.

The Applied Physics team believes future innovations in warp travel are inevitable. The general positive energy model is a first step. Besides, you don’t need to zoom at light speed to achieve distances that today are just a dream, Martire says. “Humanity is officially, mathematically, on an interstellar track.”
