Another thing to note about Nomad’s eSIMs is that VPN isn’t mentioned anywhere, so it’s safe to assume that the service is not included in the price of the eSIM.

The AIS eSim2Fly is another excellent option if you want an eSIM with regional coverage. The eSIM includes 6 GB of mobile data valid for 8 days, and when you use up all that data, you can continue to browse the Internet at a lower speed (128 kbps). The eSIM is technically unlimited data for 8 days, but only the first 6 GB grants you fast Internet speeds.

This eSIM also comes with a Thai phone number, allowing you to make mobile calls and send SMS. The AIS eSim retails for just $16, which is really good value for money considering everything that’s included.

This eSIM offers coverage in 34 countries throughout Asia, so it’s perfect for trips throughout the region. However, the short validity period makes it suitable only for trips that are about a week-long, otherwise, you have to repurchase the plan and that can quickly become more expensive than plans from other providers.

Benefits of Getting an eSIM in China

The main advantage of getting an eSIM for China is that some eSim providers include a VPN with their eSIM, allowing you to bypass the restrictions for Internet browsing that are in place in China. If you were to purchase a local SIM card instead, you wouldn’t get a free VPN with it and you would have to either pay for the service or use one of the free VPNs that aren’t entirely secure.

Another advantage of getting an eSim is that you don’t have to pay any data roaming charges when using a China mobile network. With a VPN, you can rack up the roaming charges quite quickly, and a local eSim will save you a significant amount of money.

Local Mobile Operators Offering eSIMs in China

No local mobile operators in China offer eSIMs. There’s no eSim support in the country, so if you’re set on getting an embedded sim card, an international operator is your only option. This is also why even the iPhone 14 manufactured in China supports physical SIM cards, as well as many other devices.

Additionally, any SIM cards purchased locally in China must be registered with the network provider. You have to give them your real name and possibly some type of ID. If you are not comfortable doing this for any reason, an eSim from an international provider remains your best option.

Devices Compatible with eSIM in China

Smartphones that are normally compatible with eSIMs should work with a China eSim without any major issues. However, I must point out that this does not include mobile devices manufactured in mainland China, because the local operators still do not support eSIM technology.

Devices that are compatible with eSIM include all Apple phones from the iPhone XR and later, Google Pixel 3 phones and newer, and Samsung Galaxy S20 series and later.

If you’re not sure whether your cell phone supports an eSIM, you can check whether it’s on a list of eSIM-compatible devices . Alternatively, you can dial *#06# to bring up a list of unique serial codes for your device. If you can see an EID number, it means that your phone supports embedded sim cards. If there’s no EID number, you will most likely have to stick with a physical SIM card instead.

Data Needed When Traveling to China

Not sure how much data will be enough for your trip to China? It mostly depends on how long you’re staying in the country. Plans with 3-5GB should be enough for stays of up to two weeks, but consider data packs with at least 5-10 GB for stays of up to 30 days.

Let me start with telling you that getting connected with an e-sim card when traveling to China will make your life so much easier! Based on my own experiences on my recent trip to Shanghai and Shenzhen the internet censorship in China really is a pain and constantly trying to find a VPN that actually works and gives you a fast data connection is a daily challenge.

You can fix it all by buying an e-sim card for China and enjoy using data on your phone without any internet restriction and NO VPN NEEDED! How and what? Keep reading…

Don’t waste money on high roaming charges, read my recommendations below and order an e-sim card for China on the internet and get connected in just a couple minutes. Below you will find up to date prices as per June 2024, including all specifications per e-sim card.

I will show you where and when to order an e-sim card, a comparison with local prepaid sim cards for China and of course links to directly order your e-sim card for traveling to China online.

Already since 2012 I am traveling the world full time and eventually turned my passion for traveling into a lifestyle and became a full time nomadic travel blogger . That is why I constantly get to a different country and pretty much every week I need to look for a new sim card to stay connected.

In 2024 I visited for example 34 different countries so imagine how many different prepaid and e-sim cards I used throughout the year.

In the past I used to buy a local prepaid sim card on arrival in every country, but nowadays I mostly use e-sim cards to stay connected when traveling abroad.

Helping other travelers to save money while traveling the world is one of the reasons I started this travel blog. My recommendation

Traveltomtom recommends the following two e-sim cards for traveling to China in 2024:

Traveltomtom recommends an Airalo e-sim card for China as they came to the rescue on my recent trip to China. I presonally had the best experience with an Airalo e-sim and did NOT NEED A VPN! I could access every app possible: Google Maps, Safari, Instagram, Tiktok, Facebook, etc without any issues. And again I did NOT use a VPN!

Jetpac pretty much offers the exact same e-sim as Airalo. That said, Jetpac offers a bunch of extra services on their e-sims like lounge access in case of a delayed flight, etc. More about it later.

Then there is Nomad, which actually has the best value e-sim for China in 2024 with 20 GB for $27 USD. However, Traveltomtom had lately some performance issues with Nomad e-sim card and therefore Nomad is not Traveltomtom's preferred choice of e-sim for traveling to China.

But the best value e-sim card for China is an e-sim Nomad. A Nomad e-sim card plan for China with 20 GB data plan is $27 USD, which is just $1.35 USD per Gigabyte. They have more e-sim data plans and they go down as much as $0.98 USD per Gigabyte.

Besides the fact that the Nomad e-sim card plans for China are the best buy they are also 5G ready. This in comparison with Airalo and SimOptions e-sim cards for China which only support 4G/LTE.

All e-sim cards for China are data-only e-sim cards and incoming and outgoing calls or sms are not supported. Data is only valid in China.

Is China one of your stops on a trip to Asia then you can also look into getting an e-sim card for traveling in Asia . There are e-sim cards that cover multiple countries in Asia.

There are 2 very important things to check before ordering an e-sim card for China or in general before using an e-sim card.

Unlocked phones only

Make sure your phone is unlocked. E-sim cards only work in unlocked phones. If you are not sure if your phone is unlocked then contact your mobile internet provider in your home country.

In general phones from Europe, Asia and the Middle East tend to be unlocked. Phones from North America are often locked.

If your smartphone is locked that means it does not allow another prepaid sim card or e-sim card to operate in the device. You can easily unlock your phone, but depending on your mobile internet provider you will be charged a fee for unlocking your phone.

E-sim compatible phones only

Second, and equally important: e-sim cards only work if your smartphone supports e-sim cards, also called e-sim compatible. All newer smartphones support e-sim cards. If you are not sure if your phone is e-sim compatible then simply go to Google and type in your mobile phone model in the search bar and ask if it is e-sim compatible. You will get the answer instantly.

If your phone is NOT e-sim compatible then there is no other solution and you can NOT use an e-sim card for traveling to China.

Comparison of the best e-sim cards for China

Note that you can NOT buy an e-sim card on arrival in China. All mobile internet providers in China only sell physical prepaid sim cards for tourists, no e-sim cards.

And even if you would be able to buy an e-sim card from one of the China Mobile internet operators it is NOT recommended because of the internet censorship in China.

But luckily there are multiple e-sim providers on the internet that sell e-sim cards for China. Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for traveling in China from one of the well-known e-sim card providers that have proven to be reliable operators.

Nowadays, you can buy an e-sim card for pretty much every country around the world. Order directly from one of the above e-sim card providers and instantly receive your e-sim card in your email. But before you buy an e-sim card first read all my tips below.

SimOptions also offers international prepaid sim cards for China . These are pre-activated physical prepaid sim cards and will be delivered to your home address before your trip to China and it is plug and play when you arrive in the China.

Airalo and Nomad only sell e-sim cards for China.

SimOptions is a very reliable e-sim card provider and Traveltomtom has used SimOptions uncountable times in more than 50 countries around the world. I can totally recommend using SimOptions for ordering an e-sim card.

SimOptions e-sims are always one of my top recommendations and the SimOptions e-sim card plans for China are not bad either.

Their 5 GB data e-sim plan for $14.90 USD is actually cheaper than an Airalo e-sim card with 5 GB data. However, the SimOptions plan is only valid for 7 days. The same for the 10 GB data plan, which is great value for $21.90 USD and thus for $2.19 USD per Gigabyte, but also only valid for 15 days.

These data-only e-sim cards are provided by SimOptions and are only valid in China. Unfortunately SimOptions doesn’t specify which mobile network operator in China they use, neither is there information if these e-sim cards are 5G ready.

Trust me, when they would be 5G ready SimOptions would mention it, so the max data speed on these China e-sim cards from SimOptions is 4G/LTE.

The SimOptions e-sim cards for China do NOT come with a phone number and they do not offer incoming/outgoing calls or sms services. The validity of these e-sim cards is 1 year and the credit validity starts instantly after installing the e-sim card, even if you are not in China. For more info check the SimOptions website .

Jetpac is a fairly new player on the e-sim market and they are trying to gain ground by not only offering e-sim solutions, but add a couple benefits for travelers who order an e-sim via Jetpac. I have tried it out myself and some benefits can come in pretty handy.

But let's first check out the e-sim card plans Jetpac has for China in 2024.

You can instal your Jetpac e-sim card before your trip to China, but it only activates from the moment it connects to a supported network in China. That moment your days start counting. The Jetpac e-sims have to be installed within 1 year.

The Jetpac China e-sim cards are data-only and incoming and outgoing calls are not supported.

Data is valid in China only, apart from the 1 GB e-sim and the Jetpac e-sims operate on the 4G/LTE network of China Unicom.

An extra advantage of Jetpac China e-sim cards is that they provide free lounge access if your flight is delayed. However, you will have to register your flight before you travel and in case of a delayed or canceled flight a LoungeKey voucher will automatically be provided. Airalo is another very reputable e-sim card provider that is very much recommended by Traveltomtom. Ordering your e-sim card for China through Airalo is done fast and easy. Traveltomtom has used Airalo uncountable times for staying connected when traveling abroad. Very reliable, never an issue and often some of the cheapest e-sim card deals.

Why using Airalo? When it comes to China e-sim cards Airalo has similar e-sim card plans as SimOptions and is therefore also recommended as one of the best e-sim cards for China.

Basically after two days struggling with my local prepaid China sim card I gave up and tried Airalo and suddenly everything worked. No more VPN needed, no more internet censorship. I could use my phone like in any other country around the world.

Therefore you can understand that Airalo is Traveltomtom’s top recommendation when it comes to e-sim cards for China.

The 10 GB data e-sim plan costs $28 USD which is $2.8 USD per Gigabyte, slightly more expensive than SimOptions, but the Airalo plan is valid for 30 days.

The Airalo e-sim cards for China are from Chinacom and operate on the China Unicom 4G/LTE network in China. Unfortunately the Airalo Chinacom e-sim cards for China are not 5G ready.

In pretty much all the amazing places to visit in China you will find a 4G/LTE signal and the data speed is very good, even on 4G/LTE.

All the Airalo e-sim cards are data-only sim cards without a phone number, so any phone/sms service is NOT supported. An Airalo e-sim card has to be installed within 1 month and after activation the credit validity starts when it connects the first time to a supported network. Last but not least there is Nomad and actually Nomad has the cheapest China e-sim cards plans. Traveltomtom tested them out and at first they worked fine.

The best thing about Nomad e-sim cards for China is that they are 5G ready, this is a big plus compared the 4G/LTE e-sim cards from SimOptions, Jetpac and Airalo.

The Nomad e-sim card plans prices always change a dollar here or there so check out the Nomad website for the latest price updates.

So why is Nomad not Traveltomtom's first recommendation when it comes to the best e-sim cards for China. This has to do with the reliability and Traveltomtom readers experienced some issues with Nomad e-sims in performance. A Nomad e-sim card for China is the cheapest choice, but might not be the best choice.

The Nomad e-sim cards for China are from eSIM Go and are data-only. The Nomad e-sim cards for China are 5G ready and they operate on the China Unicom network. Incoming and outgoing calls and sms are NOT supported.

But as I mentioned, Nomad has the cheapest e-sim cards for China and they go as low as $0.98 USD per Gigabyte.

The Nomad China e-sim cards have to be installed on your phone within 30 days and after installation its validity starts when it connects for the first time to a supported network in China. Basically when the plane lands. For more info check the Nomad website .

Why did Traveltomtom already used more than 100s of e-sim cards? I told you before that I travel full time and I am on the road constantly. Per year I use about 40 to 50 prepaid and e-sim cards which makes me the no. 1 sim card for tourists expert.

Holafly sells e-sim cards for China with unlimited data. Traveltomtom is not a fan of e-sim cards with 'unlimited' data, but more about that later.

The Holafly e-sim cards for Italy are data-only and incoming and outgoing calls/sms are NOT supported. These e-sims do also not come with a phone number. The Holafly e-sims operate on the 4G/5G network of China Mobile and are 5G ready.

You can not use a hotspot on these Holafly e-sim cards.

Why 'unlimited'? Because there is a Fair Use Policy and Traveltomtom has had bad experiences with this in the past. Suddenly your data speed is slowed down for 24 hours because you apparently used too much data. More info later.

If I hate something then it is slow data speed. Therefore Traveltomtom's is not a fan of e-sim cards with 'unlimited' data.

What is the cheapest e-sim card for China?

The cheapest e-sim card for China is a Nomad e-sim card for just $4 USD , it will give you 1 GB data for 7 days. Airalo has the same plan, but charges $5 USD. These e-sims are only valid in China and do not support calling and texting.

Why ordering an e-sim card for traveling in China

E-sim cards are the easiest way to stay connected when traveling to China in 2024 and you can arrange everything online in just a couple clicks. No more visiting a sim card shop and swapping physical sim cards. Order online, scan the QR code, follow the steps and you are connected in less than 2 minutes.

The most important reason to get an e-sim card is because we would like to stay connected on our trip to China without wasting money on high roaming costs. Our smartphones are pretty useless without a working data connection. Think about ordering a taxi through an app, finding nearby friends, restaurants and bars. Get directions from Google Maps or simply staying in touch with family back home, check your social media apps on long bus rides or your banking apps when paying contactless.

One of the best things about arriving in China with an activated e-sim card is that you are online as soon as the plane lands. More about when to instal your e-sim card later.

There are so many reasons to stay connected when traveling to China, but the most important reason is that it makes your trip to China so much more convenient and fun!

At the same time we don’t want to waste money on high roaming charges. Many mobile internet operators still charge $3 USD per MB for data roaming, that means just opening the Instagram app will already cost you 20 MB * $3 USD = $60 USD! Not kidding… it still is very common in 2024.

E-sim cards are the easiest way to avoid high roaming charges!

International data roaming plans

So what about overseas data roaming plans? Well, not recommended! Why? Did you read the small letters at what data speed you can use data roaming? Pretty much all mobile internet operators limit the data speed for overseas data roaming plans, which means you end up with 3G data speed, but there is at least 4G/LTE in all the amazing tourist destinations in China and actually pretty much everywhere there is 5G. Only unfortunately all the e-sim cards for China are not 5G ready.

Uncountable times (mostly American) travel friends have asked me: “can I use your hotspot? My data roaming plan is so slow, it is barely working!” Trust me, get yourself an e-sim card or an international prepaid sim card for traveling to China. Spend a couple dollars extra and be connected all the time instead of begging for WiFi or a hotspot from friends.

Where to buy an e-sim card for China?

You can only buy an e-sim card for China on the internet through an e-sim card provider. There are multiple e-sim card providers for China. Traveltomtom compared 6 e-sim card providers and concluded that the above mentioned ones are the best e-sim card providers for traveling to China in 2024.

When buying an e-sim card for China through one of the above recommended e-sim providers you only need your email address and the e-sim card is instantly ready to use after installation. There is no ID registration needed.

On arrival in China

None of the mobile internet operators in China sell tourist e-sim cards, not on the internet, nor in their stores across China. Updated info as per June 2024.

When you arrive in China and you want to buy a local sim card for tourists then only physical prepaid sim cards are available. Tourists can not get an e-sim card.

Flying into China and landing in Shanghai or Beijing then you can buy a tourist sim card for China on arrival at the airport. However, there are NO e-sim cards sold at airports in China, only physical prepaid sim cards for tourists and expect to pay tourist prices when buying a sim card at the airport.

Keep in mind that these local prepaid sim cards for China come with the full internet censorship of the Great Firewall of China which means you are unable to use Google, Safari, Google Maps, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Gmail, Outlook and so on unless you find a VPN that works in China.

Trust me you do NOT want to buy a local prepaid sim card in China. I bought one on my last trip to China and it was a disaster. Pretty much useless. On top of that all the e-sim cards mentioned in this article are cheaper.

When to order/activate an e-sim card for China?

You can order an e-sim card for China pretty much any time you want. Most e-sim cards have to be installed on a phone within 1 month after purchasing, some even within 1 year, so you have time.

More important therefore is when do you instal/activate the e-sim card. The validity of some e-sims start straight after the installation, other e-sim cards only start their validity when they connect the first time to a supported network.

Traveltomtom advices to instal your e-sim card on the day of departure to China or before. When in China you will need an internet connection AND a VPN to instal your e-sim card. Many standard VPN’s like Express, Surfshark and NordVPN do NOT work in China.

Personally it was a struggle to find a VPN that worked, thanks to my Chinese friends. However, the internet speed was very slow. I had no patience for it. It was barely enough to instal my e-sim card for China.

So my personal advice is to instal your e-sim card for China before you get into the plane and as soon as the plane lands you will be connected without any problems, no VPN needed, no internet censorship from the Great China Firewall.

How to activate an e-sim card

Installing and activating an e-sim card is made as simple as possible. Everyone can activate an e-sim card and the instructions on how to are very detailed and will be send to you instantly by email. But wait, it gets even easier. Just scan the QR code.

When you order an e-sim card plan for China you instantly receive a summery of your order including a QR-code after the payment is processed.

You will see a summary of your e-sim card order including a QR code on your screen and at the same time you will also receive an email with the same QR code. The email contains instructions on how to instal and activate your China e-sim card.

But installing an activating an e-sim card is as easy as scanning the QR code with the same phone where you want to activate the e-sim card on. The QR contains all the information about your China e-sim card.

Once you scan the code you will be guided through a couple simple steps and within less than 1 minute your e-sim card is successfully installed.

Very important is that you are connected to the internet when installing your e-sim card otherwise you will get an error and issues can occur.

Tip: if you order an e-sim card with the same phone where you want to instal the e-sim card on then ask a friend or someone nearby to take a photo of the QR code and then you scan the QR code from his/her phone and start the installation.

Things to know before ordering an e-sim card for China

Here are some general tips for using e-sim cards when traveling abroad. These tips do not only apply for China e-sim cards, but are things you have to know before buying an e-sim card in general.

Make sure your phone is unlocked

To make sure you didn’t miss this, let me say this again: e-sim cards only work in UNLOCKED phones. If your phone is unlocked then you can use any e-sim card without any problems.

If your phone is locked then ask your mobile internet provider from your home country to unlock your phone before your trip to China. It is likely that your mobile internet provider will charge you a fee for unlocking your smartphone.

If you are unable to unlock your phone you can look into getting a portable WiFi for staying connected when traveling to China or better… bring a second unlocked phone on your trip to China and use it as a portable WiFi device.

Which smartphones support e-sim cards?

Another very important thing you have to check before buying an e-sim card is if your smartphone supports e-sim cards. If you have any of the latest smartphones then there is no need to worry, all new smartphones of the well known brands support e-sim cards.

The fastest way to find out if your phone is e-sim compatible is by asking Google the question: is my (your phone model) e-sim compatible? Simple as that!

Can I trust these e-sim card providers?

All the e-sim card providers for China recommended above ( SimOptions , Jetpac , Airalo , Holafly and Nomad ) are reputable e-sim card providers reviewed and tested by Traveltomtom. All of them are licensed third party companies and resellers that partner or work directly with the mobile internet providers in China.

Traveltomtom has successfully partnered for several consecutive years with SimOptions and Airalo. Jetpac and Nomad are fairly new e-sim providers. Traveltomtom had some performance issues with Nomad e-sims and questions their reliability a little more than the other providers.

All e-sim card providers have their own Helpdesk which you can contact which if you encounter any problems or in case you want to claim a refund.

Traveltomtom does NOT sell China e-sim cards, only RECOMMENDS you to use e-sim cards for traveling to China.

Can I keep my phone number from home with a China e-sim card?

Yes, you can and this is for many people a reason to order an e-sim card to stay connected when traveling to China. An e-sim card can be used next to your physical or e-sim card from your home country at the same time. You do not need a dual-sim phone for using an e-sim card.

So you can have multiple e-sim cards installed on your phone? Yes, no problem at all!

For example: you can turn off the mobile data from your sim card from home but still use it for texting and calling. Your new China e-sim card you can be used at the same time just for data to ensure you are not wasting money on high roaming costs.

This is also the trick to keep receiving sms for example for OTP (one time password) sms to login to applications.

Switching between physical and e-sim cards is a matter of turning them on/off in the settings. Just always make sure your sim card from home is switched off for data roaming.

Can I make phone calls with a China e-sim card?

No, unfortunately there are no e-sim cards for China available that include calling and texting. All the e-sim cards from Nomad, Jetpac, Holafly, Airalo and SimOptions are data-only e-sim cards and any incoming/outgoing calls/sms are not supported.

Does a China e-sim card come with a phone number?

No, none of the China e-sim cards that you can buy on the internet come with a phone number which also means you can not receive any phone calls or sms.

Can I use 5G on a China e-sim card?

Yes, the Nomad e-sim cards for China are 5G ready. This in contrast with Airalo, Jetpac, Holafly and SimOptions e-sim cards for China which only support 4G/LTE network.

I hope SimOptions, Jetpac and Airalo step up their game, because the China 5G network is very extensive and there is pretty much 5G everywhere.

Are there e-sim cards for China with unlimited data?

Yes, Holafly as well as Nomad offer e-sim cards for China with unlimited data, but be careful... unlimited is NOT unlimited! This may sound crazy, but unfortunately this is the truth.

Traveltomtom simply does NOT recommended China e-sim cards with 'unlimited' data for tourists.

Nomad and Holafly offer e-sim cards for China with unlimited data but unlimited data is NOT on max data speed. Mostly the data speed is capped after you used X amount of Gigabytes. this is the so called Fair Use Policy (FUP).

Holafly and Nomad both offer e-sim cards for China with unlimited data for China. Nomad specifies the FUP but Holafly does NOT specify what is their exact so-called Fair Use Policy (FUP). For Nomad the FUP is max 3 GB per day.

Traveltomtom does NOT recommend China e-sim cards with unlimited data plans. There are always restrictions. And on Holafly sim cards I experienced a reduce in data speed after using more than 2 GB per day. After I contacted support they explained me that I had to wait for 24 hours until my data speed was restored to normal.

Those 24 hours were a nightmare as my data speed was barely enough to use WhatsApp. Social media was not even loading!

Again, Traveltomtom does NOT recommend e-sim cards for China with unlimited data. But if you think you will never use more than 2 or 3 GB per day, then this might be your favorite e-sim card.

But the question is... why 'unlimited' if the FUP only allows you to use 2 GB data per day on max data speed. The Airalo Chinacom e-sim card gives you 10 GB data as well, which for most tourists is enough data for their trip to China.

There is no real need for an e-sim card with unlimited data unless you want to upload your whole camera roll to a Google Drive or iCloud via 4G instead of WiFi.

Are e-sim cards the best way to stay connected when traveling to China?

E-sim cards are the easiest and fastest way to get data on your phone when traveling to China, but are they also the best way to stay connected when traveling to China?

There are 3 ways to stay connected when traveling to China:

Local prepaid sim cards

International prepaid sim cards.

E-sim cards

Let’s compare e-sim cards, local prepaid sim cards and international prepaid sim cards, for you to find out what is your preferred way of staying connected.

If you use a lot of data then local prepaid sim cards are often a cheaper way to stay connected, depending on the length of your trip. Local prepaid sim cards mostly offer bigger data plans than e-sim cards and on top of that local prepaid sim cards come often with unlimited local calls and sms.

First of all a local China prepaid sim card can only be purchased on arrival in China in a phone store or at the airport and NOT on the internet.

Second, as said multiple time before, a China local prepaid sim card is pretty much useless for Western tourists as all our applications are blocked. Not only Social Media, also everything related to Google, so good luck browsing the internet. What about VPN’s? All the well-known VPN’s are also blocked.

On top of that buying a sim card in China is also not cheap. The cheapest tourist sim card at Shagnahi Airport was $21 USD and came with 20 GB data.

A reminder there is already an e-sim card for China with 20 GB data for just $27 USD and it comes with no internet censorship and no VPN needed.

The advantage of a China local prepaid sim cards is that they are all 5G ready. All of the mobile internet operators in China (China Unicom, China Mobile and China Telekom) allow prepaid users to use the 5G network.

If your smartphone is not e-sim compatible you can order an international prepaid sim card for traveling to China. Some of them are great for using in China as well as in all other countries in for example Europe, USA, Asia and you can easily order them online.

There are two different e-sim cards:

E-sim cards that you buy on the internet through a third party
E-sim cards that you buy in China in a mobile internet provider store

However, as of June 2024 there are no e-sim cards for tourists. Traveltomtom personally shopped around in Shanghai and Shenzhen to find out if e-sim cards were available for tourists in China and the answer is: NO!

E-sim cards vs. local prepaid sim cards

Getting an e-sim card is the easiest way to stay connected when traveling to China, no doubt! You arrange everything online within just a couple clicks. Right here, right now and you are all set for your trip to China. You arrive prepared and there is no need to visit a sim card shop. As soon as the plane lands, you are online.

On top of that you have no issues whatsoever using the internet like you do at home. With an international prepaid sim card or an e-sim card for China the Great Firewall of China is not blocking any of your apps and you do NOT need a VPN.

Isn’t that the best thing you heard in a while? :)

But what is cheaper? An e-sim card or a local prepaid sim card for tourists? When we compare China e-sim card prices with local prepaid sim cards for China, Traveltomtom comes to the simple conclusion that e-sim cards for China that you buy on the internet are in fact cheaper than local prepaid sim cards for tourists that they sell in mobile phone stores in China.

China has so called visitors sim cards for tourists and they are specially designed for foreigners buying a sim card with a non-Chinese passport. They are also specially designed to make a lot of money on tourists.

The cheapest tourist sim cards start from $21 USD and up. You can buy them in the official retail stores of in the city center of every popular tourist destination in China.

After a long flight you just want to go to your hotel and it is often a big task to go to a sim card store and get connected. On top of that there are much better deals online and with these e-sim cards as soon as the plane lands you are connected. Many reasons why a lot of travelers simply get an e-sim card for China. Faster, easier, less stress and even cheaper.

Another difference between a local prepaid sim card and an e-sim card is that e-sim cards are often through a third party, a so called MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator). These MVNO’s operate on the network of one of the main mobile internet operators and basically buy bandwidth.

This may sound a little bit too technical, but what it means is that e-sim cards through an MVNO are the last ones in line when the line is busy. Especially during peak times, the performance of an e-sim cards is less compared to a local prepaid sim card from a mobile internet operator.

For China it is very simple actually since local prepaid sim cards are all on 5G and e-sim cards for China are limited to 4G/LTE.

Bottomline: the data speed of e-sim cards can be less compared to a local prepaid China sim card.

Best China SIM Cards & eSIM Options | Ultimate 2024 Guide

How can you get China SIM cards? And which China SIM card is best? While some travelers have the option to activate the international roaming on their home country phone plans, that’s either really expensive or not a good option for those who will be in China long-term. The best solution is to get your own Chinese SIM card. Here’s how.

How to get a Chinese SIM card for your phone

Having traveled around Asia for over 15 years, I highly recommend traveling through China with a smartphone .

You can get map directions, pay for almost anything, use Chinese voice translators , use the popular WeChat app, book Chinese trains , and so much more. In short, your smart phone can take all the most common pains out of traveling so you can focus more on having a good time.

But to do all these things, you need network access for your phone, which often requires buying a local China SIM card.

For those who may not know, a SIM card (short for “subscriber identity module”) is that little card that goes inside your phone that connects you to local service (phone, text, internet). You may not know it’s there…but it is.

Newer phones now have the option to use what’s known as an eSIM, which is a digital version of this small card.

Overall I recommend three ways to connect to China’s mobile network using your phone:

Purchase a PrePaid SIM Card: If you know for sure that your phone is unlocked, you can purchase a Chinese SIM card (or eSIM card) prior to your arrival in China.

Purchase a SIM Card in China : If you’re already in China or if it’s too late to purchase a prepaid China SIM card, you can always visit the office of a local service provider in China to get a SIM card. This option takes time, however, so I wouldn’t make this your primary option.
Rent a Phone / International Roaming: If your phone isn’t unlocked but you still need to use a phone in China, you can either rent a phone or use international roaming with your home carrier.

Before I go on about SIM cards, it’s worth noting that if all you need is internet access, you can always look into your options for getting reliable WiFi in China . There are drawbacks to this method, but in some ways it is easier than trying to get a China SIM card.

In order to better understand how to use your mobile phone internationally or how China treats cellular customers, let’s start off with some basics of Chinese SIM cards.

The Basics – Using a China SIM Card

Although using a SIM card with any phone is generally as easy as inserting it in your phone (or the 5-minute setup process for an eSIM), there are a couple basic -but incredibly important! – things you should know before buying one for China.

Let’s run through the most important ones.

Your Phone Must Be Unlocked for a new SIM (IMPORTANT!)

First thing to know is that your phone needs to be unlocked to use a China SIM card .

Your mobile phone needs to be unlocked to use it in China

If you purchased your phone at a discount (e.g. AT&T or Verizon subsidized the phone or gave it to you “free”), or you currently lease your phone, it’s likely your phone is locked by your carrier.

Unfortunately, if this is the case you can’t use a China SIM card.

Note on Locked Phones

This isn’t the case for phones that offer 2 SIM card slots or for eSIMs. In this case, you can still purchase a SIM or eSIM even if your phone is still locked to your home carrier.

Until you make a request to your carrier and in some cases pay off the balance of your phone entirely, that mobile phone will remain “locked” into that service provider.

Still not sure if your phone is unlocked?

If so, use one of the resources I list below to check if the phone is unlocked.

Check Your Phone’s Unlock Status (imei.info)
Check Your Phone’s Compatibility with China Carriers

If it is, you can contact your phone carrier and explain you need the unlock code for your trip to China. As long as you don’t have any outstanding balances on your account, your wireless carrier generally will have zero objections to unlocking your phone.

Expect this process to take a few days, so plan ahead should your trip to China be coming up.

SIM Cards in China Expire with No Use

During my second trip to China, I was surprised to find out after landing that my previous phone plan no longer worked, despite having plenty of credit leftover from the previous trip.

This happened because Chinese phone providers cancel unused SIM cards after a certain amount of time (different for each carrier).

You’ll want to be careful not to buy your Chinese SIM card too far in advance.

Once you buy a prepaid China SIM card, it may only last 30 days upon activation. So time your purchase accordingly and request for your SIM card to activate on the day you land in China.

Remember to also only buy enough credit to last you for your trip. Even if you do revisit China, your leftover credit will likely be forfeited after 30 or 60 days.

Don’t worry, you can always top up your phone in China if you run out of credit.

You Must Register to Activate Your China SIM Card

The Chinese government requires real-name registration to activate a SIM card.

If you purchase a pre-paid Chinese SIM card before you leave (which I recommend), this means you usually have to provide a copy of your passport.

When buying a prepaid China SIM card, don’t be surprised when the company requires you to send in a photocopy of your passport. It’s an unavoidable part of the process to activate the SIM card.

If you purchase the SIM card within China, this could mean providing bio-metric data such as a face scan and fingerprints in addition to your passport.

Best China SIM Card (Recommendation)

Whether you’re purchasing a prepaid China SIM card before you arrive or you’ve decided to purchase a SIM card from within China at a local telecom office, it helps to know what’s available and which are the offers for the best China SIM card plan.

I’m always an advocate for things that make traveling in China easy. So my top pick for the best SIM card for China is one that can be easily purchased online prior to your arrival and that works with pretty many any phone that you might have.

For most people, having a phone number isn’t necessary when traveling. The only thing that matters is DATA. That’s why the Airalo China eSIM is such a good option.

There are multiple eSIMs to choose from, which include various options for validity (7 days, 15 days, or 30 days) as well as data limits (1GB up to 20GB).

Every Airalo eSIM offers coverage across every part of China and works immediately once you land in country. Best of all, setting up an eSIM takes only about 10 minutes from the moment you click “purchase” to the moment when the eSIM is available to use.

Still, you’re going to want to get this set up prior to your visit to China, as well as downloading a good VPN for China .

China Phone Plans (Purchased in China)

There are three major cellular providers in China:

China Telecom
China Unicom
China Mobile

Unfortunately, China Telecom SIM cards don’t work with phones purchased outside of China, so even though you’ll see plenty of China Telecom stores in China, you’ll want to stick with either China Unicom or China Mobile.

While China Mobile is the market leader in China and generally has the best nationwide coverage, China Unicom is compatible with more foreign phones, allowing them to access both 3G and 4G service. That being said, I’ve used both services and had good experiences either way, so it’s hard to go wrong!

If you’re going to purchase a SIM card in China, here are my recommendations for the best China SIM card plan for each carrier.

When visiting a China Unicom store, I’d go with the “Nationwide Data King” plan (全国流量王/ Quánguó liúliàng wáng) for 2019. Here are the details for the plan:

69 RMB prepaid monthly
10 GB of nationwide data
500 minutes of outgoing nationwide calls
Incoming calls and SMS text messages are free
Additional outgoing calls are 0.15 RMB/minute
Additional data charges are 10 RMB/100MB and 30 RMB /1GB

Most foreign phones won’t work with China Mobile’s 3G network, so you’ll be pushed to their 4G coverage where available (2G where not available). Here are the details for their best phone plan plan for 2019:

88 RMB prepaid monthly
10 GB of nationwide data coverage.
50 minutes of outgoing nationwide calls.
Incoming calls and SMS text messages are free.
Additional outgoing calls are 0.19 RMB/minute.
Additional data slows down to 1 mbps until you top off your card.

China Mobile Details

In general, if you’re using a foreign phone, I recommend China Unicom over China Mobile .

China Unicom is most compatible with foreign phones and you can use both 4G and 3G service. I’ve also never experienced any real problems in service in major Chinese cities and their plans are really cheap for what you get!

China Mobile ranks #1 in coverage throughout China, but since their 3G service generally isn’t compatible with phones purchased outside of China, anywhere where there isn’t 4G coverage you’ll automatically get bumped down to the painfully slow 2G service.

DISCOUNTS: As with any business, you’ll often run into special promotions or discounts being offered in-store at both China Mobile and China Unicom. Sometimes these can be really good deals if you plan to be in China for a long while, but if your need of a China SIM card is short-term, it’s best to stick with the above recommended plans.

How to Top Up China SIM Cards

It’s quite possible that you encounter a point where they use up all your phone or data credit and cannot make outgoing calls, text messages, and lose the ability to access the Internet.

There are several ways for “topping up” your China SIM card when you run out of credit.

Top Up At a Local Store . You can visit any one of your mobile carrier’s stores and give them your phone number and cash. They will take that as a hint that you need more credit added to your China SIM card. This method always works but, depending on the line, can take quite a while to accomplish.
Top up through Alipay or WeChat Pay . While this is arguably the easiest and fastest way, you need a local Chinese bank account or money in your Alipay/WeChat Pay wallets to top up. If you don’t have a Chinese bank account, you can always hand a Chinese friend some cash and they can top up your Chinese SIM card for you.

I personally prefer topping up using Alipay or WeChat pay.

Using a Phone in China | 6 Crucial Tips

Finally, to maximize the use of your China SIM card or if you want to consider alternatives to buying a China phone plan entirely, I’ve got 6 crucial tips for you:

Remember that China actively censors Internet content including websites and apps like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp and many, many more blocked websites . So to share stories and photos with your friend during your journey, I’d buy a VPN before you leave to get around the Internet censors (such as ExpressVPN ), otherwise it’s much harder to do so once you arrive since the VPN websites are blocked. Thankfully, there are still ways to install a VPN from within China .
As mentioned above, the easiest way to buy a prepaid China SIM card before you depart for China . This can easily free up an entire morning or afternoon to see other things in China instead of waiting and trying to figure out phone plans. We recommend Airalo’s China eSIM options .
It can be easy to run out of phone credit quickly in China especially if you are consuming heavy data usage services like streaming and video chat. If you have a plan with less data than you would normally use at home, use your phone sparingly so you can avoid having to top off your phone plan multiple times.
If all you need is Internet access and don’t see yourself needing to make any phone calls, consider instead renting or buying a global WiFi hotspot device for your trip .
It’s no secret that the Chinese government monitors communication you send through WeChat and I for one do not like the idea of my passport tied to a China SIM card for privacy purposes. Even businesses restrict their own devices being used in China out of concerns for intellectual property theft, so I’d consider renting a phone for China during your trip. This is also a good option if your phone carrier won’t agree to unlock your phone.
Lastly, you can always consider not dealing with the hassle of getting a China SIM card by using your own cellular provider in China. Keeping mind, though, that the international roaming charges can potentially run you a fortune. This option definitely wins for convenience, but can easily break the bank for budget travelers.

Final Thoughts | China SIM Card

As a seasoned traveler in China, I definitely think it’s worth having a local phone plan for your trip to China. Overall, I find buying one online easiest (especially a prepaid China SIM card ) and there are many ways to top off your plan should you run out of credit.

If getting a SIM card is something you truly don’t want to do, then I would settle for global WiFi as a reliable and affordable alternative for accessing the Internet.

Don’t forget to also get yourself a VPN before you leave so you can access blocked websites and apps like Facebook and Instagram. There are many good VPN providers out there, but I personally prefer ExpressVPN .

Hey Josh, timely article! i have been in anshan for a week. my china unicom sim card expired while i was back in florida. i will visit a china unicom store today to rectify the problem. I am heading to yingkou tomorrow for two weeks. then i fly from there to xi’an for a week. back to yingkou after that; return to Panama City beach on april 16th.

This is a good read. I will be in beijing next month for a vacation. I am from the Philippines. I will be arriving Beijing by 1AM. I would like to know if the stores will be open by that timeto get a sim card? Based on the willmyphone work link (thanks for the insight btw), my phone can be supported only by China Unicom. If the stores will already be closed by that time, what are my options?

Hey Well, unfortunately all the shops, including those in the Beijing airport that might sell SIM cards, have already closed by 1am. You only have two options: 1) pre-purchase your SIM card using the 3G Solutions link in this article or 2) wait until the morning to get a SIM card. I recommend saving time by pre-purchasing.

If you live in the U.S., get a Google fi account. I have traveled to china 6 times and get good data service (LTE) from both China Telecom and China Unicom. Data costs $10/GB and is free over $60. The phone line costs $20/month and calls are $0.20/min or free over wifi. Google gets the service through T-Mobile, but for Google it is running at full speed. The great advantage is that you can be reached through your US number and that the service works in almost every country. It used to be that you needed a Google phone, but now a lot of other phones work with it too. I personally have the original Pixel XL from 2016 and it has an amazing camera. Only $120 used on eBay.

Yes, you can use a passport, although often you have to go to a main telecom office, not a smaller one.

Great questions. Getting a local phone number allows you to receive texts, which in many cases helps if you want to use WiFi around China. Otherwise, you can do fine with just data.

As for the VPN, I recommend getting your own VPN (like ExpressVPN , separate from the SIM card company.

I am not sure if this workS in china but i know it works in eUrope, mexico, and other asian COUNTRIES. I have magic jack with a usa number for our unit down south, it works with wifi or on a phone. It cost 19.95 a year. You can onlY call or text canada and usa.

Yes, there are a number of VoiP options available, but they don’t give you a Chinese phone number. You’d be surprised at how helpful this can be as you’re traveling around China.

1. Will a data only sim card able to order didi? i.e. driver won’t be able to call you or text you. yes I can read and speak chinese. 2. The 2 local plans seem to be all monthly plans? Do they have a prepaid one-time only plan? Can I buy them in the gaungzhou airport?

That’s a good point, which is why I often recommend people get a Chinese SIM card instead of using their international roaming. You need a phone number in order to use DiDi.

As for local plans, they all seem to be monthly plans. I don’t know that they do prepaid, one-time plans. And yes, there are SIM card kiosks at the Guangzhou airport 🙂

I have a China mobile SIM, on the 88rmb package. I constantly travel to China but was wondering how it works if let’s say the month finishes and I wait 15 days to recharge. Will that mean the next month of data starts when I recharge? Will I have to recharge every single month to keep using the number?

No, you don't need a SIM card as a tourist in China, but having one will enable you to make phone calls and SMSes and not to rely solely on public or hotel WiFi to access the web.

A good place to start would be to review your contract from your mobile network provider before you travel to China. Most contracts are limited to use just within your home country (or within the European Union if you live in an EU country). For all other countries, so-called 'roaming charges' typically apply. However, there is one exception: specific contracts sometimes allow you to use your data worldwide. If you have a global internet contract, you can also use it in China without unexpected roaming charges.

Otherwise, although precise roaming charges differ according to your network provider, the fees for using mobile internet in China are typically around $2 or $3 per 6 MB (six megabytes) of data used, though they could be higher still. For example, if you wanted to download an average-sized app from the Google Play Store onto your Android smartphone, you'd use around 24 MB and pay $8 to $10 in roaming charges. It should, therefore, be clear that roaming with your regular SIM card in China is generally not worthwhile and can lead to enormous costs. As we'll see in a moment, it's significantly cheaper to purchase a local Chinese SIM card once you arrive or, better yet, an eSIM before you travel.

What Are eSIMs, Anyway?

Simply put, eSIMs are regular SIM cards that don't require inserting an actual microchip into your device while providing the same benefits. Newer smartphones (but also smartwatches, tablets, and other devices) can be equipped with eSIMs, and since you don't need an actual SIM card to install an eSIM, you can also get one before your trip to China. To do this, all you have to do is visit an online eSIM service, purchase the eSIM you want, and follow the instructions to download and install it onto your device.

Like regular SIM cards, prepaid eSIMs come bundled with a certain fixed amount of data, SMSes, or telephone minutes, which you can use at your leisure while travelling. You get to choose the package you want, and you can generally also extend your eSIM's validity easily right from an app.

Pros of Using an eSIM

In general, eSIMs have numerous advantages and are often a better alternative to using a regular SIM card for most tourists. In our opinion, the most significant advantages include:

In our opinion, there are only a few reasons against using an eSIM when travelling to China (which we'll discuss below), and in most instances, we're sure that it's a far better deal than using your normal SIM card from your home country on Chinese networks.

Cons of Using an eSIM

As we've already seen, eSIMs have very few drawbacks and are an excellent option for accessing mobile internet on your Chinese vacation.

However, one disadvantage is the slightly higher upfront cost than physical SIM cards. That said, eSIMs are still comparatively cheap, especially for use in China from abroad. In our opinion, the significantly higher level of comfort and the possibility of having access to the internet immediately upon arrival are worth the extra pennies. Another disadvantage is related to installation, where the process may be unfamiliar to you if you've never installed an eSIM before. However, if you follow the instructions carefully, you'll be fine.

Finally, there's the issue of compatibility: not all devices support eSIMs . If your device was released before late 2019, we recommend double-checking on the internet or contacting a representative from an eSIM service to confirm whether your device is compatible before you purchase an eSIM. In general, the following devices will support eSIMs though:

Fortunately, you can call abroad without the high costs, and there are three ways of doing this. We go through each below:

1. Voice-Over-IP (VoIP) With Data

In most cases, eSIM packages are loaded with mobile data, not with minutes or airtime. However, using your data, you can use web-based apps like WhatsApp, Google Meet, Skype, Telegram, Facebook Messenger, FaceTime and others to stay in touch with family and friends abroad while in China.

2. eSIMs With Airtime

Some eSIM services offer talk and text packages alongside normal data packages. These allow you to make direct phone calls or SMSes via local networks in China to your home country for only a slightly higher fee than regular data packages. Not all eSIM services offer this service though, but some, like Wraptel , do.

3. International Calling Apps

What is an eSIM? Here’s everything you need to know

I f you’ve purchased a new cell phone in the past decade or so, you’re probably already familiar with the SIM—the little thumbnail-sized card that’s used to connect to your your carrier’s cellular network —but in recent years smartphone manufacturers and carriers have started replacing them with something called an eSIM.

The “e” in eSIM stands for “embedded,” which makes sense as this is a SIM card that stays inside your phone and can’t be removed. It performs the same function as a traditional SIM card but has the potential to make things a lot simpler for most smartphone users. Almost any new phone you buy nowadays features eSIM technology, including the new iPhone 15 . In fact, the iPhone 15 doesn’t even have a physical SIM card slot available, and all iPhone 15 users need to transfer to eSIM — giving a hint at where the technology is going. Pretty soon eSIMs could become the standard, with physical SIM cards gradually fading out of use.

But if you’re confused by the concept of an eSIM, don’t worry — we’ve got you covered. Read on as we get more specific about what eSIM technology truly is, and how it differs from its predecessor, the physical SIM card.

What is an eSIM?

An embedded SIM, also known as an eSIM, is a SIM card that’s built into your smartphone and can’t be removed. It performs the same function as a traditional SIM, except that it’s programmable and physically connected (soldered) to your smartphone’s motherboard.

This may seem problematic at first glance. For instance, when traveling abroad using phones with removable SIM cards, you can swap to another carrier’s SIM card to get local coverage and avoid paying roaming fees from your primary carrier. Likewise, if you want to switch local carriers but keep your phone, a removable SIM card can be popped out and easily replaced with a new one in seconds. Your first impression may be that this is impossible with an eSIM.

However, eSIM technology actually makes switching carriers even easier, at least in theory. Instead of waiting for a new SIM card to ship or making a trip to a local store to pick one up, you can make the switch right on your phone by entering information from your carrier — often just by scanning a QR code with your smartphone’s camera. If your smartphone has an eSIM inside, you’ll find options in the settings that allow you to configure your eSIM , switch between lines and carriers, and manage your accounts. If you’re a dual-SIM user , eSIM technology may even support multiple accounts — and switching between them is super easy.

Unfortunately, while getting an eSIM should be easier than obtaining a physical SIM, that’s not always the case. Some carriers have taken longer than others to embrace the seamlessness of eSIM, and it’s not uncommon to encounter a few that still want to mail you your eSIM codes or have you visit a store before you can set up your phone. That takes away one of the biggest advantages of using an eSIM, but thankfully most carriers are working quickly to catch up with the times.

The other significant benefit of eSIM technology is the space saved by removing a physical SIM tray. Devices can be smaller because the eSIM chip is embedded in the device’s motherboard — there’s no unnecessary space taken up by placing a slot and tray on the outside edge of the device. This allows for thinner designs and larger batteries. It also helps with improving water resistance by eliminating another place where moisture can get inside your phone.

All of the major phone manufacturers now offer eSIM technology in their phones: Apple iPhones have it (including, of course, the recently released iPhone 15), Samsung Galaxy devices have it, Google Pixel phones have it, and flagship Motorola phones have it. If you buy a new phone, chances are strong you’ll have eSIM functionality in the palm of your hands. Many tablets and watches include eSIM technology too, including Apple Watches and iPads.

Speaking of Apple, all iPhones from the iPhone 13 on offer support for using two eSIM cards, letting users get dual-SIM support without the need for a physical SIM card. In fact, Apple removed the physical SIM card slot entirely for the U.S. models of the iPhone 14 lineup, making eSIM the only way to get your iPhone 14 activated on a carrier network .

iPhone 14 models sold in most other countries still include two eSIM cards and one physical SIM card slot, the same as the iPhone 13. The notable exception to this rule is China, where eSIM has never been included on an iPhone. Instead, when Apple debuted the iPhone XS/XR in China, it provided two physical SIM card slots. That practice has continued to this day.

However, if you’re in the U.S. and want a physical SIM card slot on your iPhone 14, there’s one thing you’ll want to keep in mind before hopping up to Canada or down to Mexico to do a little cross-border shopping. Although all North American iPhone models support the same 4G/LTE, low-band 5G , and mid-band 5G frequencies, only the U.S. iPhone models support the mmWave 5G used for the fastest portions of Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband and AT&T’s 5G Plus coverage.

When can I start using an eSIM?

Chances are, your mobile device already has an eSIM card, as we’ve outlined above. Laptops with cellular connectivity mostly connect using eSIM technology, like the Surface Pro X and various models from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung. You will still see cases where SIM cards are employed in laptop designs, but that’s becoming far less common.

Until eSIM tech becomes the universal standard, many phones will still have a tray designated for a removable SIM card. There’s nothing wrong with using one of these phones — it’s just an older means to identify you on a carrier’s network. Still, swapping out a SIM card can be troublesome, given its size and delicate do-not-touch circuits. Managing an eSIM is easier for everyone, whether you’re switching phones or moving to another carrier.

If you’re using a dual-SIM phone with both a physical SIM card and eSIM, such as an iPhone or Google Pixel, you may also be able to transfer your physical SIM information directly to your eSIM . Many carriers allow for this, and iOS and Android provide tools to make it quick and easy. Once that’s done, you can toss your old SIM card aside and free up that slot for a physical SIM card for traveling.

Nevertheless, while you’ll want to check ahead, you may be pleasantly surprised to find how many international carriers support eSIM, and it’s hard to argue that it’s much easier to scan a QR code than trying to fiddle with swapping out a small and fragile SIM card, especially when traveling through a busy airport.

The Big 3 U.S. wireless carriers are experiencing an international roaming outage. Users on AT&T , Verizon , and T-Mobile have reported no service on international soil across South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. As it stands, it seems the issue is not related to one specific country or carrier.

At the time of writing, neither of the big three carriers have issued official statements on the matter. Users who managed to contact Verizon support shared that the carrier is aware of the problem which is classified as a global service issue and Verizon is actively working to resolve the situation. No time frame was provided.

You can be sure the problem is the government agency that monitors all international -> US traffic is down. International roaming is routed through home carrier unlike local SIM card so you can bet it's monitored
