In this day and age, the one thing we all can’t live without is the Internet. We’re so pampered by the ability to have the world’s knowledge in the palm of our hands that we literally don’t go anywhere without a connected device — or two. 

Sadly, though, having data on your mobile phone turned on all the time is very power-consuming, not to mention having your mobile hotspot turned on at the same time. Sure, free WiFi exists, but not everywhere, and “free” never really means “free”, so you never really know what’s going on in the background while you’re connected to their network. 

The solution to this is portable WiFis, also known as pocket WiFis. These portable wireless routers allow you to connect multiple devices to the Internet via a mobile hotspot. 

You’d think you only need pocket WiFis while travelling overseas, but the truth is, you can use them anywhere! From long road trips to working in a public place, pocket WiFis allows you reliable, safe, and convenient access to the Internet without needing to rely on fixed Internet connections.

In Malaysia, there are plenty of pocket WiFis to choose from. Here is a list of some we have tested + a couple of others you can consider!

• How We Test Pocket WiFis in Malaysia

There are many portable WiFi devices available on the market right now. We selected some of the highest-selling devices and tested them using the below criteria:

• Portability (Build & Design)

It’s in the name: portable WiFis should be portable, first and foremost. From the weight and dimensions to build quality and design, we bring each portable WiFi device out with us every day for a week to determine which one is less of a hassle to use. 

• User Interface

On the whole, portable WiFis have pretty simple interfaces — but that doesn’t mean they’re easy to use. Some have screens, some don’t; some have their SIM card slots on the outside so you can insert and go, and some require you to open up the cover just to insert your SIM card. We evaluate how easy it is to navigate and use the devices and if the user interface is intuitive enough for a first-time user.

• Features & Performance

Does it actually do what it’s supposed to do, i.e. give you Internet through WiFi while you’re on the go, and how easy is it to configure the network settings? A good portable WiFi should have sufficient connectivity even at a distance and have robust security features to avoid random strangers siphoning your WiFi or sabotaging your connection. 

• Battery Life

The portable WiFi should have a reasonably long battery life to ensure that it can last for extended periods without requiring frequent recharging. Generally, if the device lasts for more than 24 hours, we consider it to have decent battery life. Some portable WiFis can even double as power banks!

• Value for Money

Portable WiFis typically cost around RM200. Since we pay similar amounts for all of our reviewed devices, we’re curious to know whether one has more value over the other, based on what came in the box and the overall performance according to the criteria above. 

• Do I Need A SIM Card For My Portable WiFi?

Short answer: yes.

Since portable WiFis are essentially hotspot devices, you’ll need a network provider to be able to broadcast Internet to your other devices, just like the hotspot function in your smartphone.

For the purpose of this review, we purchased a 20GB Yoodo SIM card priced at RM20 (promotional price). As of the time of writing, the promo is still available.

Do note that you will need to get a SIM card with hotspot data — some unlimited plans only allow limited hotspot, so you might not be able to use your portable WiFi with those plans.

“In Our Experience” - Live ProductNation Review

This is my favourite pocket WiFi out of the lot, even though it’s not exactly “pocketable” given its brick-like build. Don’t worry though; it’s still about the size of my palm and still smaller than most conventional power banks.

The Prolink Mobile WiFi sports a healthy amount of ports, including a micro-USB for power input, a USB-A port for power output, a LAN port, a microSD slot and a SIM card slot. It’s worth noting that all these ports are on the sides of the device, so setting up, i.e. inserting the SIM card is very convenient since you don’t have to open up the device, unlike most of the other pocket WiFis here.

My favourite feature on this device is the screen. It shows all the information you need to know about the network, including network status, name, and password. You can even display a QR code for a much easier connection to your smartphone! Since it also has a LAN port, you can connect your laptop to it without having to fiddle with WiFi settings or passwords. 

If you’re worried about network security, which I did when I first realised that the network name and password are displayed on the screen for the whole to see, Prolink has got your covered too. You can disable this feature by going to the web-based configuration page. It’s all nicely detailed in the Quick Installation Guide that comes in the box.

The Prolink Mobile WiFi has a large battery of 5200 mAh, and have I mentioned that it doubles as a power bank? It’s just enough to juice up a smartphone from 20% to 90%, and you can still connect to the WiFi the entire time. Mind you, it’s not fast charging, but it’s great for emergencies. 

Without using it as a power bank, the Prolink Mobile WiFi can last up to 25 hours and has a coverage of about 20 meters. 

Last but not least, you can share files through this device too! It comes with an SD card slot, which you can use to transfer files to multiple devices at once. 

Who Is This For?

I’m giving this full points for convenience. From connectivity to the user interface, it doesn’t get any more convenient to use. Plus, it can be used as a power backup for your smartphone too! 

I’d recommend the Prolink Mobile WiFi to frequent travellers, as the ports are all on the sides of the device, and it’s multi-purpose, so you can use it for more than one purpose. Plus, the file transfer feature is great for transferring all your photos to multiple devices at the same time.

The HUAWEI E5573 is a compact and lightweight portable Wi-Fi device, making it an ideal choice for those on the move. Designed to support 4G LTE networks, it ensures high-speed internet access and can switch to 3G or 2G networks when necessary. It's only a smidge bigger than a standard credit card. Plus, it can connect up to 10 Wi-Fi-enabled devices at a time, ensuring that you can get a private Internet connection on all of your devices.

Out of the four pocket WiFis we reviewed, this was by far the lightest, slimmest, and most portable one. It slips comfortably into a small pocket and takes up minimal space in your purse, so it’s almost easy to forget it’s there!

In general, it works like it’s meant to: just pop in the SIM card, turn it on, connect to the network, and you’re good to go. The interface is simple and minimalistic, with just a single button on the top of the device and two lights indicating battery power and network availability on the left and right.

The small battery capacity probably contributed to the slim build. At only 1,500 mAh, it has one of the smallest capacities; but it still managed to last pretty long. We were able to record about 6 hours of continuous usage before it needed another full charge.

The one downside to the HUAWEI E5573 is that the SIM card slot along with the network details are all under the battery, so you’ll have to open up the back cover and take out the battery just to insert a SIM card before you can use it. It’s something that we don’t foresee travellers enjoying, as the back cover is kinda hard to remove and it’s way too easy to lose your tiny SIM card if you have to juggle all these parts while on a moving vehicle or somewhere busy.

This is the cheapest portable WiFi we reviewed, the only one under RM200. It’s great for people who enjoy working in cafes or public spaces, as it’s small enough to fit in just about anywhere. It could be great for travellers too, but the setup can be a little troublesome for on-the-go users.

Need to connect multiple devices to a hotspot? The D-Link DWR-932C Portable MiFi has got your back. It can provide up to 150 Mbps high-speed internet connection to a whopping 32 Wi-Fi devices, so you can rest assured that everything and everyone is connected!

Starting with the design, the DWR-932C Portable MiFi sports a slim look with rounded corners that is great to hold in hand. Plus, it has a matte coating that makes it look premium, and ultra-portable since it’s small.

It only has one micro-USB port for charging on the outside; everything else is housed under the back cover and battery of the mobile hotspot, so you’ll still have to take it apart before you can use it. The LED icons on the front of the device show everything from power to network status, but since it’s only icons, it’ll take some getting used to before you can really understand what’s going on. 

It can connect up to 32 devices according to the box, and while we don’t necessarily have 32 devices to connect it to, we did have 10, and it holds up to the test. Moreover, it can connect through a USB cable as well through its charging port.

Battery-wise, it held up pretty well with 10 hours of usage, quite enough for a day out. No shockers there; it also has a file transfer feature so you can mass upload files from an SD card to your devices. 

The D-Link DWR-932C Portable MiFi is suitable for large families or groups. It can connect plenty of devices at the same time, and lasts reasonably long.

Whether you’re travelling abroad or simply spending a long weekend away from home, it’s always a good idea to bring along a pocket wifi. You’re going to need enough connectivity for all your kids' games, right?

With speeds of up to 150 Mbps, the TP-Link M7350 4G LTE Mifi Portable Wireless can handle its fair share of usage. From streaming to web browsing to social media scrolling, you can get enough fun or work on the road with this option.

Don’t be deceived by the big screen; it’s actually just a tiny screen in the middle of the glossy black plastic. Still, it’s a decent enough screen that shows you what you need to know. The network name and initial password can also be found by clicking through a menu list, so you can easily show it to a friend. 

The TP-Link 4G LTE Mifi Portable Wireless is compact and pocket-sized, though it’s not the smallest we reviewed. I do like that the display shows the network speed. It also supports file transfer, with the SD card slot under the back cover along with the SIM card slot for storage sharing.

As for the battery, the TP-Link 4G LTE Mifi Portable Wireless does well at 8 hours of battery life. It also recharges pretty fast, getting to 100% in just about half an hour, so you needn’t worry about being without Internet while it’s out of juice. 

Although people who often go on the road will definitely appreciate this little device. A mobile hotspot will get a lot of use during your travel, especially if you’re constantly on other devices like a laptop or tablet and you want to conserve your phone’s battery.
