Travel Young

Discovering the world in your prime, 2 countries and counting, 2 cities and counting.

One of the biggest challenges I faced while traveling was the lack of guidance on what to do once I arrived in a new city. While I could navigate my way there, I struggled to discover the best restaurants, bars, trails, beaches, and more. Although I could find a few opinions from fellow young travelers, I yearned for a centralized platform that compiled well-researched recommendations and insights. Motivated by this gap, I took it upon myself to create a website that gathers valuable input from like-minded individuals across various social media platforms, all sharing a common interest in affordable world travel for the young and adventurous.

What & Why

At Travel Young, we believe that the world is a classroom and that travel is essential to a young person's education and personal growth. Our mission is to empower young travelers by providing them with curated, authentic, and reliable information based on the firsthand experiences of fellow explorers.

Traveling is about more than checking off famous landmarks. Rome offers more than just the Colosseum and Pantheon, Beijing is more than the Great Wall of China, and every city holds treasures beyond its iconic buildings. Embrace these global destinations as opportunities for connection, adventure, and discovery, where you can truly uncover the essence of each place.

Through our platform, you will find hostels to stay in cities for cheap, day trips, and the best restaurants, bars, and clubs. We specialize in delivering expert advice tailored specifically to young people, ensuring they make the most of their travel experiences.

We're excited to announce that we're launching with a focus on European cities, but our goal is to expand our coverage to include popular destinations across every continent. We value your input and suggestions! If you're familiar with a city or passionate about a particular destination, we encourage you to reach out and collaborate with us. Together, let's create a comprehensive resource that empowers travelers worldwide. Contact us today to contribute and make a difference!

A period house overlooking a garden with lots of shrubs and flowers

Collon House on Ardee Street, Collon, County Louth, was built in 1740 in the Irish Longhouse style by Anthony Foster, father of John "Speaker" Foster, who was the last Speaker of the Irish House of Commons until its dissolution in the Act of Union in 1800. Speaker John extended Collon House in the 1770s, adding on a ballroom, a master four poster bedroom, and second floor rooms for his children and their governess. These second floor rooms are accessed by a handsome half-turn stair with landings.

John Foster was born in 1740 and was MP for Dunleer from 1761 to 1768. He was MP for Louth from 1768 to 1821 when he was elevated to the Peerage as Baron Oriel of Ferrard in the County of Louth. He was also Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1784 to 1785, becoming Speaker in 1785 until 1800.

Around 1780 John Foster built a lakeside garden folly near Collon called Oriel Temple and he left Collon House to move there. He was very influential in the rebuilding of the nearby Collon Church of Ireland in 1813 and many tablet memorials to the Foster family can still be seen there.

The remaining gardens of Collon House have been restored with appropriate period planting. The main house entrance overlooks a sunken box parterre with topiary and an intricate design layout. In the ornamental garden there is a box edged herbaceous border leading to a classical Greek style summer house.

Collon House, in the centre of Collon village, is 57km from Dublin City centre, 50km from Dublin Airport and 120km from Belfast.

Can aspirin help protect against colorectal cancers?

A new study details how a daily dose could prevent or delay the progression of the world’s third most common type of cancer.

Four white aspirin tablets on a white background.

Aspirin is well known for its ability to ease pain from muscle aches and headaches; it reduces fevers; and low doses can thin blood, reducing the chance of clots that cause strokes and heart attacks. Now a new study suggests it may also play a role in colorectal cancer prevention.

Colorectal cancer, a cancer of either the large intestine or rectum, is the third most common type of cancer, and the second most common cause of death from cancer , worldwide. There were 1.9 million new cases diagnosed across the globe in 2020, according to the World Health Organization, and these numbers are expected to grow. In the United States, the rates of colorectal cancers have been rising in people younger than age 50 since the 1990s, which includes more young people dying from the disease, according to the National Cancer Institute .

Now a new study published in the journal Cancer shows that colorectal cancer patients who took a daily dose of aspirin had a lower rate of metastasis to the lymph nodes and stronger immune response to their tumors. The research suggests that aspirin may be boosting the ability of the immune system to hunt for cancer cells.

“It is a rather unexpected effect, because aspirin is mainly used as an anti-inflammatory drug,” says Marco Scarpa, a researcher at the University of Padova, and one of the authors of the study. As Scarpa notes, this study suggests that aspirin may be playing a slightly different role by stimulating the immune system’s surveillance response, which can then prevent or delay the progression of colorectal cancer.

Your immune system is always surveilling the body for cells that just aren’t right. When they find such cancer cells, they will kill them just as they would kill invading bacteria or viruses, says Cindy Kin , a surgeon at Stanford University, who specializes in colon and rectal surgery.

A colorized CT scan of a patient's large intestine and colon, with a noticeable narrowing of the organ, suggestive of cancer.

“The data about aspirin and cancer is really evolving,” says Maen Abdelrahim , an oncologist at Houston Methodist Hospital, who specializes in treating colorectal cancers. However, there are still a lot of unanswered questions about how aspirin can prevent and delay the progression of these cancers, as well as which subset of patients would benefit from a daily aspirin.

( Colon cancer is rising among young adults. Here are signs to watch for. )

People who take a consistent use of aspirin have a lower risk of colorectal cancer, “but it has to be balanced with the risks,” which includes the possibility of bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract, says Jeff Meyerhardt , an oncologist and co-director of the Colon and Rectal Cancer Center at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, in Boston.

Aspirin protects against colorectal cancer

There are several studies that suggest a link between aspirin and colorectal cancer prevention and delay. However, the mechanism by which aspirin does this is still unknown. That makes it hard to predict which patients will benefit the most.

In a 2020 meta-analysis , which analyzed the results of 45 observational studies, researchers found that regular aspirin use was associated with less incidence of colorectal cancer.

A low dose, between 75 and 100 milligrams, was associated with a 10 percent reduction in the risk of developing colorectal cancer; a regular dose of 325 milligrams was associated with a 35 percent decline.

Other studies have shown a link between daily aspirin and a delayed progression , including a lower risk of dying in patients who had already been diagnosed with colorectal cancer.

“What has been seen in multiple studies for colorectal cancers is that having a more robust immune reaction does seem to have a better outcome,” Meyerhardt says. “This is looking at how aspirin may interact with that.”

Study suggests mechanism

In the study, researchers obtained tissue samples from 238 patients who had undergone surgery for the colorectal cancers. Of these patients, 12 percent were taking a daily low dose of aspirin for the prevention of heart disease. When compared to patients who were not taking aspirin, the researchers found a lower rate of metastasis to the lymph nodes, and higher numbers of immune cells that had infiltrated the tumors.

This higher level of infiltration is thought to be linked to slower cancer progression—including the lower rate of spread to the lymph nodes—by allowing immune cells to enter the tumor mass and fight the cancerous cells more effectively.

( Why is stomach cancer rising in young women? )

The researchers also found higher levels of immune markers that are responsible for triggering the immune system surveillance response. “It’s boosting the immune system, and it’s helping the immune system inside the tumor,” Abdelrahim says.

In recent years, the immune system’s role in protecting against the development of cancer has become recognized.

Patients with suppressed immune systems are at higher risk for developing cancers , compared to patients with a fully functional immune system. As these results suggest, aspirin may increase the vigilance of the immune system when it comes to the detection of colorectal cancers.

“Your immune system is doing all of these things in the background, that you’re not even aware of,” Kin says. “It’s not just the tumor’s behavior and how aggressive it’s going to be, but it’s your body versus the tumor.”

Urgent warning for UK tourists not to travel to holiday hotspot

A Yazidi woman is seen during a ritual as Yazidis, dressed in colorful clothes, perform rituals to celebrate the Red Wednesday Feast, the Yazidi New Year at the village of Magara.

The Foreign Office has warned Britons to avoid travelling in parts of Turkey due to a ‘heightened risk of terrorism’.

It already advises against all travel within 6km of Turkey ’s border with Syria .

Now the government has also issued an urgent warning against all but essential travel to Şırnak city or nearby Hakkâri province.

Both are in the southeast of Turkey where, in addition to Ankara and Istanbul, ‘most terrorist attacks have occurred’, the Foreign Office (FCDO) website states.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan pledged to ‘protect our country from the ring of fire through a security corridor across our borders’, during a speech in Şırnak this March, Daily Sabah reported.

SIRNAK, TURKIYE - MARCH 13: Turkish President and Leader of Justice and Development (AK) Party Recep Tayyip Erdogan (C) greets the crowd during his party's election rally prior to the municipal elections in Adliye Square of Sirnak, Turkiye on March 13, 2024. Said to be home of Noah’s tomb, Şırnak is packed with archaeological and religious sites, including a castle and a partially ruined red madrasah.

It also has mountains, rivers and canyons that makes it of interest to visiting tourists, Hürriyet Daily News said.

But its proximity to the Syrian border can also make it dangerous.

Historically the threat came from the PKK, a militant group fighting for independence of the Kurdish people.

It has carried out bombings and massacres within Turkey since the 1980s, and has found itself fighting Turkish forces in Syria since Turkey’s invasions of Kurdish-controlled regions there in 2016 and 2019.

A woman stands in front of a damaged mosque as she arrives in Sirnak city.

The FCDO said: ‘Fighting in Syria continues in areas close to the Turkish border and there remains a heightened risk of terrorism in the region.’

Although PKK terrorism in Şırnak and Hakkâri has largely died down, ISIS and Al-Qaeda -linked groups in Syria continue posing a threat.

ISIS has ‘previously targeted border crossings and nearby locations on the Syrian side of the border’ and has ‘the capacity to carry out attacks in neighbouring countries’, the FCDO website says.

Sites visited by foreigners – including airports, places of worship and large public gatherings like religious events and public holidays – are on the list of potential targets.

The FCDO said: ‘If you’re undertaking essential travel to Şırnak city or Hakkâri Province, take extreme care.’

Elsewhere, visitors face road closures in the southern Hatay Province when travelling routes leading to the Syrian border.

And the biblical resting place of Noah’s Ark, Mount Ararat in the eastern Ağrı Province, is a special military zone that requires a fee and permit to enter.

The FCDO said: ‘If visiting with a travel agent or tour group, confirm with them whether you need an individual permit.’

5 Best Deals The Phoenix Suns Can Get For Bradley Beal In 2024 Offseason

After a crushing first-round sweep in the playoffs, the Phoenix Suns are at a crossroads. With Bradley Beal’s less-than-stellar debut season in Phoenix and a hefty $161 million owed to him over the next three years, the Suns may be compelled to explore trade options. This move could help them reshape their roster and better position themselves for future success.

Despite Beal's challenging year, his track record as a prolific scorer and playmaker means he still holds substantial value on the trade market. In this article, we'll delve into the five best deals the Suns might consider to leverage Beal's value effectively and rejuvenate their team dynamics.

The Suns Send Beal To The Jazz For Their Talented Duo

Phoenix Suns Receive: Collin Sexton, Jordan Clarkson

Utah Jazz Receive: Bradley Beal, Drew Eubanks

Bradley Beal's tenure with the Phoenix Suns could have been better, marked by uneven performances and a hefty salary that's strained the team's budget. Moving Beal might be Phoenix’s best option to dodge financial turmoil.

On the other hand, the Utah Jazz see an opportunity in Beal to bolster their competitiveness , pairing him with star forward Lauri Markkanen. This could revitalize their offense. The departure of Jordan Clarkson and promising young guard Collin Sexton from Utah may reflect a strategic pivot or a desire to streamline their squad for a fresh tactical approach. For Clarkson and Sexton, this could mean leaving behind roles that no longer fit Utah's evolving game plan.

Phoenix stands to gain substantially from this trade. Collin Sexton is poised to fill a critical void as the lead point guard—a role he seems ready to embrace with averages of 18.7 points and nearly 5 assists per game this season. Additionally, Jordan Clarkson, a standout bench scorer with an average of 17.1 points per game, could greatly enhance the Suns’ second unit.

This trade strategy appears to be a win-win for both teams. The Suns address crucial lineup gaps, securing a new point guard and a potent scorer off the bench. Meanwhile, the Jazz welcome a seasoned star in Beal who could significantly amplify their offensive capabilities alongside Markkanen. This reconfiguration could well elevate both teams, helping them build more dynamic and competitive teams.

Another Great Piece In The Grizzlies Lineup

Phoenix Suns Receive: Luke Kennard, Brandon Clarke, John Konchar

Memphis Grizzlies Receive: Bradley Beal

This past season, Bradley Beal averaged 18.2 points, 5.0 assists, and 4.4 rebounds per game. While these numbers are solid, they mark a decline from his peak performance levels, suggesting that a change of scenery might benefit both Beal and the Suns. By redistributing Beal’s responsibilities and cap space across multiple players, Phoenix could achieve greater depth and flexibility in their lineup in a trade.

After losing Ja Morant for the season, the Memphis Grizzlies found themselves slipping to 13th in the Western Conference. In a bid to revitalize their lineup for the upcoming season, acquiring Bradley Beal could be a game-changer. Pairing Beal with a healthy Morant would create a formidable backcourt, complemented by Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr., rounding out a stellar starting lineup. This move could position the Grizzlies as serious contenders in the West.

For the Suns, this trade brings in Luke Kennard, a sharpshooter who can immediately boost their perimeter scoring. Brandon Clarke adds a burst of energy and a strong interior presence, alleviating the need for Kevin Durant to play at power forward—a role he's less suited to. John Konchar contributes as an efficient role player known for his hustle and versatility. These pieces could mesh well with the Suns' current roster, possibly offering a more balanced team dynamic.

The Kings Make A Gamble To Go Back Into The Postseason

Phoenix Suns Receive: Kevin Huerter, Harrison Barnes, Trey Lyles

Sacramento Kings Receive: Bradley Beal, Bol Bol

The Sacramento Kings , having missed the playoffs this year, are poised to make a bold move to shake up their roster and push for a postseason return. Despite Bradley Beal's hefty salary, the potential upside of adding his scoring prowess could be a game-changer for the team. The Kings are parting with Kevin Huerter, who didn't have his best year, and Harrison Barnes, who is entering an expiring contract and could provide valuable experience and leadership elsewhere. Trey Lyles is included in the deal primarily to balance the salaries.

For the Suns, this trade brings in Kevin Huerter, a younger player with a promising shooting ability, potentially filling the gap left by Beal. Harrison Barnes brings a veteran presence and a championship pedigree, offering solid contributions on both ends of the floor. The addition of Trey Lyles provides depth in the frontcourt. The Suns' acquisition strategy focuses on adding versatility and youth to support their core, including Kevin Durant.

To make the trade more appealing to Sacramento, the Suns agree to include Bol Bol after re-signing him in free agency. Bol's unique skill set and potential development could be intriguing for the Kings, adding an additional layer of talent to their roster. This trade represents a strategic pivot for both teams, aiming to realign their objectives and capabilities as they prepare for the upcoming season.

A New Star In Detroit To Get Out Of The Bottom

Phoenix Suns Receive: Evan Fournier, James Wiseman

Detroit Pistons Receive: Bradley Beal

The Detroit Pistons finished last in the Eastern Conference and as the worst team in the league, signaling a dire need for a significant roster shake-up. Pairing Bradley Beal with Cade Cunningham could dramatically transform Detroit's backcourt, injecting much-needed scoring and experience that could propel the team out of the league's basement and into competitive relevance.

Evan Fournier, moving to the Suns, offers a sharpshooting presence on an expiring contract, providing Phoenix with a proven scorer and financial flexibility moving forward. James Wiseman, a young center who has struggled to find his place with the Pistons, could benefit from a change of scenery. His potential re-signing and subsequent trade to Phoenix offers the Suns a promising young talent who could either serve as a backup to Jusuf Nurkic or even challenge for a starting role. This would open up possibilities for Phoenix to potentially trade Nurkic for additional assets if Wiseman fits well into their system.

For Detroit, acquiring Beal represents a bold move to escape the bottom of the standings. His proven scoring ability and veteran leadership could help guide the young Pistons, especially Cunningham, as they strive to build a more formidable and competitive team. This trade not only aims to elevate Detroit's immediate prospects but also reshapes their identity and trajectory in the Eastern Conference.

The Hornets Get Competitive After A Long Time

Phoenix Suns Receive: Davis Bertans, Grant Williams, Cody Martin

Charlotte Hornets Receive: Bradley Beal

The Charlotte Hornets have struggled in recent seasons, and it's time they leverage their promising young core, including LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller, by adding a seasoned star to the mix. Acquiring Bradley Beal could be the key to turning around their fortunes, providing them with a proven scorer and veteran leadership that could make them competitive in the Eastern Conference.

In exchange, the Phoenix Suns receive Davis Bertans, Grant Williams, and Cody Martin. Bertans, who is on an expiring contract, doesn't offer long-term commitment, allowing the Suns to clear approximately $17M in cap space the following year—an attractive proposition for future roster flexibility. Grant Williams brings valuable versatility to the Suns as a stretch four, which could allow Kevin Durant to return to his natural small forward position without the burden of playing too physically in the paint. Cody Martin, while included primarily to match salaries, also provides depth and hustle on both ends of the floor.

This trade is strategically beneficial for Charlotte as it significantly boosts their offensive capability and gives Ball and Miller a seasoned companion to accelerate their development. For the Suns, the deal brings financial relief and a player in Williams who could potentially thrive in a new environment, fitting well into a system that values spacing and shooting. This move could help both teams address their current needs while setting them up for better trajectories in their respective conferences.

President Biden announced $7 billion in grants for solar power projects on Monday and tried to draw a contrast with Republicans who want to roll back his policies on climate change.

In remarks at Prince William Forest in Virginia, Mr. Biden said the money from his signature climate and energy law, the Inflation Reduction Act, would help provide solar power for hundreds of thousands of homes in disadvantaged communities.

“Despite the overwhelming devastation in red and blue states, there’s still those who deny climate is in crisis,” Mr. Biden said at the start of a week in which his top officials will fan out across the country to promote his environmental policy. “Our MAGA Republican friends don’t seem to think it’s a crisis.”

He also said the American Climate Corps, a new work force for people hoping to combat climate change, would create thousands of jobs for the next generation.

Mr. Biden’s Earth Day event comes as he tries to energize younger voters, many of whom are disillusioned with the 2024 candidates and infuriated over the administration’s handling of Israel’s war in Gaza.

On Monday, Mr. Biden tried to strike a middle ground when speaking about the turmoil on college campuses . Asked whether he condemned “the antisemitic protesters,” Mr. Biden said, “I condemn the antisemitic protests.” He added: “I also condemn those who don’t understand what’s going on with the Palestinians.”

Mr. Biden leads his Republican opponent, former President Donald J. Trump, among young voters, and many approve of his record on the environment when contrasted with Mr. Trump’s. Mr. Biden’s lead, however, is smaller than it was at this point during the 2020 election cycle, according to a Harvard Youth Poll released last week.

Another poll, from October , found that just 31 percent of voters younger than 30 were “satisfied” with Mr. Biden’s record on climate change.

Danielle Deiseroth, the executive director of Data for Progress, a left-leaning research firm, said Mr. Biden could use his efforts to combat climate change to bolster support among young voters.

“The bigger fear is not necessarily young voters turning out en masse for Trump. It’s them staying home,” Ms. Deiseroth said. “That’s where the climate stuff does come into play, to sort of energize and also to scare young people to coming out to vote.”

Mr. Biden has faced a messaging problem when it comes to the Inflation Reduction Act, his most consequential climate policy to date. The legislation contained hundreds of billions of dollars in tax credits to help companies switch to low-carbon electricity sources like wind, solar and nuclear power. It also included billions in incentives for people to buy electric vehicles and electric heat pumps for their homes.

The law, signed in 2022, is already having ripple effects: Across the country, businesses have announced plans for more than 150 factories that would build electric vehicles, batteries, solar panels and wind turbines. Sales of electric cars and installations of large-scale solar power plants both hit record highs last year.

Yet polls suggest that few Americans seem to know about the law.

One potential problem is that many of the climate law’s outcomes are not yet fully visible. While companies have announced more than $100 billion in new manufacturing investments in states like Arizona, Georgia and Michigan, many of those factories are not yet up and running.

Some environmentalists have sought to publicize the law’s effects. Climate Power, a liberal advocacy group, plans to spend $80 million on election-year advertising to contrast Mr. Biden’s legislative accomplishments with the actions of Mr. Trump, who has mocked climate science and has vowed to roll back programs to promote clean energy.

Other climate activists have sharply criticized Mr. Biden for not doing enough to curtail fossil fuel drilling in the United States. U.S. oil and gas production soared to record highs last year. Many activists have focused anger on Mr. Biden’s approval of Willow , an $8 billion oil drilling project on pristine federal land in Alaska, and on federal approval of a natural gas pipeline from West Virginia to Virginia that has been opposed by environmentalists.

“President Biden has taken historic action on climate change and done more than any president in history to combat the climate crisis, but that bar is unfortunately quite low,” said Stevie O’Hanlon, the communications director for the Sunrise Movement, a group of young climate activists. “If Joe Biden wants to be seen as a climate president by young voters, he needs to decisively take action to end the fossil fuel era.”

In recent months, Mr. Biden has taken a series of steps to try to slow down domestic fossil fuel production. In January, the administration said it would pause the approval of new terminals that export liquefied natural gas in order to study the issue further. This month, the Interior Department said it would ban oil drilling across nearly 13 million acres in Alaska’s North Slope.

Our Coverage of the 2024 Election

Presidential Race

Protests and arrests on college campuses exploded into the forefront of the presidential race recently, opening up a new line of attack for Republicans  and forcing President Biden to directly address an issue that has divided the liberal wing of his party.

In a stop in Wilmington, N.C., a possible swing state in the fall election, the president announced $3 billion  in new spending to upgrade water systems around the country.

Biden has been under pressure to prove he can be tough at the border. But at a campaign reception, he also tried to voice his commitment  to America’s long history of immigration, calling Japan and India “xenophobic” in the process.

A Key to 2024:  As Democrats confront a presidential race against a resurgent and resilient Trump as well as a brutally challenging Senate map, they believe they have an increasingly powerful political weapon: ballot measures to protect  abortion rights.

Presidential Medal of Freedom:  With the election looming, Biden assembled a list of 19 people to honor that was heavy with major Democratic Party figures and others he has worked with  over the years.

The Ultimate D.C. Veteran:  In 30 years of Senate bids, Joe Biden was such a formidable incumbent  that he did not face a serious threat to his return to office. But his last re-election is shaping up to be a fight.

Awash in Federal Money:  Across Milwaukee, there is evidence of federal money from laws passed under the Biden administration. The president hopes voters will notice .

SAN ANTONIO — A Texas man who made an online threat of a mass attack on a convention of young conservative activists in Florida in 2022 was sentenced to five years in federal prison.

Federal prosecutors said Alejandro Richard Velasquez Gomez, 20, of San Antonio posted a threat on social media to attack the Turning Point USA Student Action Summit in Tampa. Turning Point is a Donald Trump-aligned group that organizes young people on college campuses into conservative activism. Velasquez pleaded guilty in 2023 to a charge of interstate threatening communication and was sentenced Wednesday.

Investigators said Velasquez posted on Instagram that the first day of the convention would be “the day of retribution the day I will have revenge against all of humanity.” Velasquez had bought a plane ticket to fly from Austin to Tampa on July 22 but canceled the ticket the night before his flight.

In court documents, investigators said they they believed Velasquez had planned an attack similar to a violent rampage in 2014 in which Elliot Rodger, 22, killed six students and wounded more than a dozen others near the University of California, Santa Barbara, before killing himself.

Related: At least 6 people, including 4 minors, shot Wednesday in western Fort Worth, police say

In a statement announcing the sentence, federal prosecutors said Velasquez tried to obstruct the FBI investigation by using a group of minor girls to help him delete information from his online accounts, and contacting witnesses to hide evidence and influence testimony.

“This man used social media to broadcast the message that he intended to travel across the country and carry out a violent act at an event catering to young political activists,” said U.S. Attorney Jaime Esparza for the Western District of Texas. “Fortunately, his post was reported to officials who intervened.”

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
