Trek 1120 Review

A bikepacker’s fantasy, 1120. A touring bike with limitless off-road potential is made possible with a tough all-terrain frame, 29+ tyres, a built-in rack system, and mountain-ready components like a 1x drivetrain. This bike is made to travel to the most remote backcountry locations in the globe, but it’s also perfect for quick overnight bikepacking excursions and sub-24s.

Specification

pros & cons, c heck specifications here.

You should consider it if you respect independence, value freedom, and want a vehicle for off-road travel and bikepacking in areas where other bikes can’t go. Trek 1120 is intended for the eccentric and nocturnal personalities among us. Trek 1120 is the vessel to use if filling in the final unexplored areas of the map is your thing.

A wide-range 1×12 Shimano drivetrain, a carbon fork, our custom rack system, included bag holsters that secure and protect 8L dry bags of your choice, Shimano 4-piston hydraulic disc brakes for superior stopping power, 29+ tyres, and a Bontrager Line dropper post that makes it simple to mount, dismount, and descend while loaded are all included in the technology you get.

Aluminum Alpha Platinum Frame

Trek 1120 frame is built of sturdy aluminum and carbon. Aluminum Alpha Platinum is used in its construction. The bike’s frame was created using Trek’s ground-breaking Stache platform.

The Trek 1120 frame is quite tough because it was designed to handle any terrain. It does weigh a little bit more than some Trek mountain bikes that are identical to it because of how tough the frame is.

The Trek 1120 offers every gear you should require for lengthy rides over challenging terrain. The simple and efficient 1x drivetrain has a wide range. For both mountain trails and dirt roads, the gearing performs admirably. This bike may be used for everything from flat terrain to off-road travel in harsh conditions.

There are 11 gears on the Trek 1120. The high-quality gearing mechanism on this bike allows it to be used for both on-trail and off-trail adventures.

Shimano is the manufacturer of all the shifters and gears used in the drivetrain. This mechanism makes shifting gears simple and ensures that the vehicle stays in the gear you intend it to be in.

Large 29+ wheels are on the Trek 1120. These wheels have excellent grip and roll quickly. The huge wheels assist in absorbing much of the shock from below on uneven ground. The wheels are over three inches wide, which provides excellent ground contact and keeps the bike stable under all conditions. With the rims on these wheels, tubeless tyres can be used to lower tyre pressure and avoid flats.

Trek 1120 wheels have excellent stability, durability, and traction. The 28-spoke wheels are reasonably sturdy.

Carbon Fork & Suspension

The Trek 1120 Adventure HCM Carbon Fork is the name of the suspension-corrected fork. It consists of a steerer tube constructed of bonded alloy with a carbon fork and crown. The fork has triple accessory bosses on either side, 110mm BOOST spacing, and rack mounts just above the dropout.

The major purpose of the Trek 1120 is to be used for bikepacking journeys, and this suspension system is very good in protecting the rider from the elements. The user won’t experience any jolts as the bike smoothly glides over obstacles like pebbles and sticks.

Newfangled Racks

These specialized aluminum racks offer a very sturdy surface for strapping various types of equipment. By providing creative ways to attach gear and drybags to the bike, they also do away with the necessity for a typical seat pack and handlebar roll. In general, they allow the bike to carry more goods than with a typical bikepacking arrangement.

Oh! What a feeling factors

This bike breaks down barriers and allows you to flee, and it has the necessary specifications so you can easily pack it up and go.

For the greatest packing balance, it is simple to secure 8L bags in the rear rack and additional gear up front using the sturdy harness system and integrated rack.

You can configure your ultimate excursion ride however you see fit thanks to so many mounting options.

It also makes a great mountain bike; simply remove the racks if you want to shred.

If your derailleur breaks in the middle of nowhere, you can easily switch to singlespeed thanks to the horizontal sliding dropout.

Trek 1120 (29+) Adventure Bike Review

trek 1020 touring bike

The Trek 1120 isn’t a new bike. It’s been around for a couple of years now. From the time that I saw an early photo of one of the rack prototypes, I’ve been intrigued by the cargo-carrying (bikepacking) capacity of the 1120 and its signature integrated rack system. The 1120 is very similar to a Trek Stache 29+ Wheels mounted to a pretty unique aluminum frame. The 1120 shares the same symmetrical elevated chainstay and adjustable Stranglehold dropouts, but it’s 15 mm longer than the Stache to accommodate loaded touring.

trek 1020 touring bike

I know a lot of people hate-on the big 3 US bike brands, but in the case of the 1120, Trek designed, prototyped and then manufactured a sophisticated and elegant example of an omni-terrain adventure bike with the 1120. They created a bike that can cover everything from mountain bike singletrack to almost anyplace on earth bikepacking. The drive-side chainstay is what allows the Stache and the 1120 to handle so well. I’m used to a longer wheelbase 29+ rigid bike and the shorter chainstays of the 1120 make it handle twisty singletrack with less body english and (probably) faster. I say short cahinstays and moderately slack head angles for the win!

That being said… I’ve heard rumblings about the same issues that always come up with elevated chainstays. Bottom bracket flex and cracked frames. I didn’t experience either of those two things but if you want to run a singlespeed drive train, you might run into bb-flex issues. I ran the stock Shimano 1×10 drivetrain and the 1120 felt solid and handled an impressive variety of adventures over this past summer.

trek 1020 touring bike

I’ve owned a Surly Krampus since they were introduced so during the test period I was able to experience back to back ride comparisons between the two bikes. It was a lot closer than I would have predicted., but I like the 1120 better than my Krampus. The 1120 has a dropper-post. (I could put a dropper on the Krampus) The 1120 handles slightly better on singletrack and somehow also managed to easily cover one hell of a lot gravel, asphalt, chip-seal and rail-trail. The 1120 replaced both my Surly Crosscheck and Krampus this summer and this past summer was the summer that I got my groove back.

trek 1020 touring bike

This past spring I had some minor surgery that I’d been putting off for years and during the pre-surgery doctor visits, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. After the surgery, I couldn’t ride for six weeks. This was back in March. The time off of the bike made me appreciate my passion for riding and ya kwow….(stay’n alive). So I’ve changed my diet and dedicated myself to riding six days a week in hopes of returning to some modicum of physical fitness. The plan has worked (my last A1C was 5.5) and I’ve lost a bit of weight along the way. For most of that time period, I rode the 1120 for almost all of my riding. It was my gravel bike, mountain bike, bikepacking and packrafting platform. I even took the 1120 to gnomefest. I tried to utilize this ‘Swiss Army Knife’ in every way that I could come up with. I guess what I’m trying to say is that my review is based on a lot of time in the saddle during a summer that I have come to appreciate more than words can express.

trek 1020 touring bike

Enough about me, let’s talk about the bike – The matte gray frame and fork is contrasted by orange racks and downtube graphics. The racks are what drew me to the 1120 and that’s what most of the questions center around when people see the bike. They post “what racks are those?” The answer is that they’re made by Trek just for the 1120. The front rack attaches to the crown of the fork and the rear rack attaches to the back of the chainstays. Four bolts do the trick for either rack and they come on and off easy enough.

trek 1020 touring bike

The 1120 also comes with a pair of drybag holders designed to mount on the rear rack. They have two large velcro straps and five ‘C-Clips’ to hold an 8-10L drybag in place as a mini pannier. The rack positions the bags so they don’t get in the way when you’re pushing your loaded bike up some steep sketchy goat trail. Trek Product Manager, David Studner shared that Travis Brown had done field testing during the development of the 1120 and had valuable input into the design of the bike’s racks. David also shared that the development team took a fresh look at how riders were using bikepacking bags to carry gear. The 1120’s racks are the product of the team’s fresh design intent.

trek 1020 touring bike

The 1120 came with a set of 29×3.0 Chupacabras mounted tubeless to a set of SUNringle Duroc 50 SL rims laced to Bontrager Alloy hubs. The star of the wheels is the Chupacabras. Trek changed the name and now they’re called the XR2. I love these tires as an all-conditions do everything low rolling resistance tire. It’s a great choice for a swiss army bike/knife. Singletrack at 11 psi and gravel/pavement at 15psi seemed to be the sweet spot for traction sweet chewiness. (I want a pair for my Krampus). Six months of riding and the wheels were quiet, solid performers. I never experienced a flat tire or any other problems with the wheels, but I think that the rear thru-axle on our test demo might be haunted. Periodically, when I’d go to ride the 1120 the rear T/A would be loose. I’d tighten it up and it would be fine for a while, but then without warning, it would happen again. I think that my wife might be mess’n with me or we have some sort of a lefty-lucy spirit out in the garage.

trek 1020 touring bike

The racks make loading the 1120 with camping gear a cinch. The front rack makes it a two strap show. I think that’s four fewer straps that I need with my handlebar mount set-up. The very first thing that I did with the 1120 this spring was take a trip to Iowa City and do an overnight gravel/camp with Adam Blake and a couple of other dudes. I was able to carry way too much stuff on that trip.

trek 1020 touring bike

I did a three-day tour in the Kettle Moraine State Forest that I’d been daydreaming about for years on the 1120. The bike’s big wheels really come into play during off-road touring. The 1120 is a very capable mountain bike and those big wheels roll over anything in their path.

trek 1020 touring bike

I went packrafting with the 1120 this summer. I rode out to Lake Mills and paddled across Rock Lake and then pedaled back to the ranch. The last trip that I took on the 1120, JP and I followed a route that I created with the Wahoo Elemnt Roam that I’m learning to enjoy? We rode up to one of our favorite MTB trails through the Black River State Forest near Wisconsin’s elk herd and wolf pack(s).

trek 1020 touring bike

About the only gripe that I have with the 1120 is the bars that came with the standard build aren’t really my cup of tea, but who knows…you might love them. I swapped them out to a set of Fatback Sweet 16 carbon bars after a handful of rides and rode happily ever after.

trek 1020 touring bike

The smurfy summer of 2019 was made all the more splendid because of my time spent turning the pedals on this bike. The 1120 is one hell of a lot of adventurebike for the $2649 price tag ecspecially when you take into consideration the racks and accessories that come with the bike. I’d throw this bike at just about any adventure that a 3″ tire can handle. This thing can carry more than you need and delivers one of the most versatile fully rigid, adventure bike platforms that I’ve experienced…plus it rides real nice!

One Response to Trek 1120 (29+) Adventure Bike Review

I’m thinking it is time for Trek to bring the 1120 and Stache up to date in terms of rim and tire width. Old school 3.0 tires on i45 rims are becoming obsolete. I would prefer to have the 1120 and Stache come with 2.6-2.8 tires on i30-35 rims. With the narrower tires/rims you still get most of the Plus goodness but with a lot less weight. And replacement wheels, if needed, are much easier to get. Wheels with i45 rims just aren’t that common now days.

The New 2018 Trek 1120 Off-Road Touring Bike

' src=

Trek has a long history of building bikes you can travel with. Their longest-running bike model, the ‘520’ touring bike, has now been in production for 35 years. When we combine Trek’s history with their recent expansion to include seven different touring bikes , it’s no surprise to see the new 2018 Trek 1120  join the ranks.

In the last decade, fat bikes have been pushing the boundaries with the type of terrain possible – namely snow, sand and gravel. The downside to fat bikes is that they’re often heavy and the tyres roll rather slow when compared to standard mountain bike tyres ( twice the rolling resistance ). This has spawned a new bike category over the last few years that offer capable 2.80-3.00″ wide tyres that roll faster yet are still ultra grippy.

Called 26+, 27+ or 29+ depending on the rim diameter, ‘plus’ bikes manage to roll pretty well, tackle loose surfaces and will absorb the majority of hits.

The 2018 Trek 1120 Off-Road Touring Bike

Plus bikes aren’t new to Trek. The Stache 29+ mountain bikes were the first plus models announced back in 2015, and that’s the very bike that the 2018 Trek 1120 is based on. Other than the addition of the cargo cage frame and fork mounts, the bike’s geometry is a little different too. The handlebars sit higher as well as closer to the rider for all-day use. The chainstays have been extended to provide better stability for climbing steep hills.

The proprietary rack system is perhaps the most striking part of the bike, firstly because it’s bright orange, but also because it’s a unique design. Rather than employing ‘strap on’ bikepacking bags, these racks are designed to support lightweight dry bags. The cradling front rack sits just above the front tyre, keeping the brake and gear cables free from getting squished. With rigid racks, your drybags won’t have the opportunity to jump about on the rough trails either. The rear rack has another purpose: it allows the fitting of a ‘dropper’ seatpost.

A button on the handlebar moves the seat up and down 125mm while you’re riding. While I’ve never felt the need for a dropper post on my adventure bikes, they do allow inexperienced riders to confidently tackle steep off-road descents. The wide-range 11-46t cassette and 30t front chainring get the gears right down to 19.5 gear inches, which should be adequate for most off-road climbs.

The carbon fork is long enough to switch out for front suspension – you know, just in case you like getting extra rowdy on the trails. The 2018 Trek 1120 weighs 14.5kg (31lbs) and will be available soon for US $2499 .

First published in Issue 124 of Singletrack Magazine, this Trek 1120 was reviewed as part of our Long Haulers test of bikes with racks.

Read Review

off.road.cc

Trek's 1120 is an off-road touring machine quite unlike anything else out there. Thanks to fat 3" tyres on broad rimmed 29er wheels, it's comfortable and surprisingly capable even on pretty techy terrain, while the neat racking system allows you to take everything up to and including the kitchen sink. It's quirky, hugely fun and extremely practical all at the same time.

BIKEPACKING.com

Feb 2018 · Logan Watts

The Trek 1120 features an innovative front rack and rear harness system, surprising trail prowess, and is lighter than we expected. Here’s the full review.

The front rack and fork are unparallelled and offer several major advantages over typical handlebar mounted bags. Plus the fork is quite nice with two sets of triple bosses.

With racks, this size large Trek 1120 — set up tubeless — weighs 29.4lbs… incredible for a big-footed bike with two chunky, well built racks.

A well conceived geometry leaning more toward distance dirt tourer.

Good choice of drivetrain components for bikepacking and dirt touring.

Rear rack and harness system are a nice way to add a little more volume compared to a typical seat pack… all while slightly lowering the center of gravity. And it’s rock solid.

The PressFit bottom bracket will likely be one of the biggest gripes about this bike. But, as mentioned in the Norco Search XR review, there are ways around this being a risky (or squeaky) affair.

Playing the devil’s advocate, the aluminum frame will likely be the second con. While it’s not as vibration dampening and repairable as steel, it’s certainly lightweight.

The frame triangle doesn’t quite jive with size large universal fit frame bags. The best bet is a custom bag if you want a frame pack.

I would prefer a rigid seatpost and a price closer to $2k. But, considering you get two racks, the harnesses, and don’t necessarily need any bikepacking bags, it’s actually not a bad deal.

If it were up to me, the front-end would be a little slacker.

Trek 1120 Review: Is It The Best Touring Bike?

  • By Daniel Shakibaie
  • Mountain Bike , Trek Bikes

Trek 1120 Review

The Trek 1120 Touring bike is for bicyclists who want to take on all terrains. It has a rugged, durable frame that is also lightweight. This model is perfect for backpacking trips and bike tours because it has a heavy-duty rear rack system for hauling gear.

It is ready to go for mountain trails and more. It is built to take on any kind of terrain, no matter how rough. It is made by Trek bikes who specialize in manufacturing touring/mountain bikes for adventure rides. All of the features and components are optimized for most extreme backcountry destinations and off-road adventures.

The streamlined design has a sporty black and orange color scheme. Compared with similar mountain bikes, the Trek 1120 is lighter, faster and has more storage room. The 29+ tires are very forgiving of all terrains. One of the larger tires’ benefits is that they offer more traction, which makes for a more stable ride over bumps. It doubles as a trail bike, but it really shines for it’s off-trail capabilities.

One of the features that makes it great for bike tours is high-capacity racks and holsters for storage. This bike is best used for trails that are off the beaten path. For regular everyday riding, such as the commute to work in the city, this bike is not going to be the best choice for you because of the aggressive riding position. If you are looking for adventure, then you will love everything that this tour bike has to offer.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Touring Bike

trek 1120 bike

The most important thing for you to consider when shopping for a touring bike is what terrains you plan on taking on. The Trek 1120 doubles as an off-trail and on-trail bike, but its features are most optimized for taking on the roughest of terrains. It is high-performance when it comes to rocky and rough terrains, but if you plan on sticking to trails, then there are better options. For adventurous individuals who need an awesome mountain bike made for off-road adventures, this bike is a great choice.

Bike Frame Materials: When shopping for a touring bike to take on bike tours, the bike frame materials are very important because this is where most of the weight of the bike comes from. The Trek 1120 is made out of a carbon or aluminum frame, which is very lightweight yet durable.

Gears: The bike gears are what allow for the bike to reach certain speeds and determine how it handles going up/downhills. For speed and for climbing slopes there are different gears. Different types of bikes require different gearing settings. The Trek 1120 has gears that are great for trails, but it could use more gears for making climbing steep hills better.

Seat and Handlebars: The seating and positioning of the handlebars determine what riding position you will be in. The Trek 1120 has an aggressive riding position which is best for off-roading tours. It has a dropper seat post which makes it easy to get on and off the bike.

Brakes: The braking system on the bike is essential to consider for safety. The faster you plan on going, the better braking system you will need.

Features & Benefits

The features and benefits of the Trek 1120 are geared towards performance on extreme terrains. It can double as an on-trail bike as well. Here is a detailed overview of the features and their benefits.

Frame

The frame of the Trek 1120 is made with durable aluminum and carbon. It is made out of Alpha Platinum Aluminum which is exclusive to the Trek brand of bikes. The rear rack system adds some additional weight, but does not slow the bike down. You can remove the storage or rear rack for greater speed as a mountain bike. The frame of the bike is designed based on Trek’s innovative Stache platform. It has many similarities to the Stache model, but with a few changes that make it more suited for off-trail performance.

The frame of the 1120 is extremely rugged as it is made to take on any sort of terrain. Because of how rugged the frame is, it does weigh a little more than some of the similar mountain bikes by Trek. Compared with a steel frame, carbon and aluminum are more lightweight. The downside to aluminum is that it is noisier than steel, but keeping it well greased will eliminate any creaking noises.

Another thing to consider about the frame is geometry. This is important to consider when choosing which size of the bike is best for you because height is not the only factor. Arm and leg length can vary for different heights, and so both the individual dimensions and the geometry of the frame contribute to the overall comfort and performance.

Frame Sizes:

  • 15.5 in/Small – Rider height 5’ – 5’5
  • 17.5 in/Medium – Rider height 5’3 – 5’8
  • 19.5 in/Large – Rider height 5’8 – 6’2
  • 21.5 in/Extra-Large – 6’1 – 6’5

Specifications:

  • Alpha Platinum Aluminum
  • Tapered head tube
  • Internal derailleur & drop post routing
  • Proprietary rack mounts
  • Horizontal sliding dropouts
  • 12MM thru-axle

Suspension System

Suspension System

The suspension system is what insulates the rider from the roughness of the terrain. For adventure bikes, the suspension system is one of the most important things to consider because it will determine how smooth of a ride you can get on rough trails.

The Trek 1120 is outfitted with a Carbon Adventure Fork. The carbon fork suspension on the Trek 1120 is so good that many people wonder if it will be sold as a separate part for use with other bikes. Right now, the carbon fork is only available in pre-assembled bikes by Trek.

This suspension system is highly effective for insulating the rider for bikepacking trips which is the main function of the Trek 1120. The bike can easily glide over bumps like rocks and sticks without causing sudden jolts to the rider.

Wheel

One of the standout features of the Trek 1120 is the large 29+ wheels. These wheels roll fast and offer great traction. For bumpy terrains, the large wheels help to absorb much of the impact from below. The wheels are 3+ inches wide which creates strong traction with the ground to keep the bike stable in all circumstances. With the rims on these wheels you can go tubeless. Tubeless rims allow you to reduce the tire pressure to prevent flats.

The materials used to manufacture the wheels are very strong. You can use this bike for tours with total confidence that the large, steady wheels will be highly resistant to wear and tear from the terrain. The most important benefit of the wheels of the Trek 1120 is that they are stable, strong, and create strong traction. The wheels are 28-spokes and are fairly solid, but when the bike becomes airborne, there is a small chance of the spokes becoming damaged, so keep this in mind.

  • Back and front hub & skewer by Bontrager
  • SUNringle Duroc 50 SL rims with tubeless tape included
  • 28-spokes made out of stainless steel
  • Bontrager tubeless-ready wheels with inner strength sidewalls

Gear

The Trek 1120 has all of the gears that you should need for long rides over difficult terrains. The only downside to the gearing system that we could find is that some people have reported that they wish the bike had gears to make climbs easier.

The wide range of 1x drivetrain is simple and effective. The 1x drivetrain is one of the features which makes the bike ready for mountain bikes. The gearing works great for gravel roads and for mountain trails. This mountain bike has a wide range of capabilities from flat terrain to extreme off-road touring.

More: Trek X Caliber 8 Review: Worth Buying Or Not?

The Trek 1120 has a range of 11-gears. The gearing system is top-quality and makes this bike versatile for both off-trail and on-trail tours. Most touring bikes manufactured this year have a 1 x 11 gear set, including the 1120.

All of the drivetrain gear components and shifters are made by Shimano. Shifting gears with this system is easy and it stays in the gear that you want without accidentally shifting out. You can use the gears to go over different terrains without damaging the chain.

  • Shimano SLX M7100 12-speed shifter
  • 30T alloy ring crank with 52MM chainline

Brake

The Trek 1120 uses a hydraulic brake system. Hydraulic disc brakes are highly effective for making quick stops even in wet conditions. The brake system is made by Shimano. It has a 6-bolt Shimano RT56 brake rotor. Hydraulic braking systems offer the most powerful stopping power. You can trust this bike to come to a clean stop even in water or mud .

Compared to mechanical brakes, hydraulic brakes are high-performance in all weather conditions. Mechanical brakes use a cables system, while hydraulic brakes use pressure to force the hydraulic fluid to activate the brake pads.

  • Shimano 4-piston hydraulic disc brakes
  • MT4100 lever
  • MT420 caliper

Alternatives

Trek has a comprehensive line of mountain bikes. Here is a summary of how the Trek 1120 compares with the Stache and the Trek 920 models.

Trek 1120 vs Stache

The Trek 1120 is very similar to the Stache. They look very similar and the Trek 1120 borrows many of the same stylistic components as the Stache, but they vary somewhat in performance. One of the features that is different on the Trek 1120 is that it has a longer chainstay.

This, along with the shorter tube and steeper head angle, all work together to make the Trek 1120 better for rough, off-trail terrains than the Stache. The Trek 1120 is optimized for lower speeds and rougher terrain than the Stache,

Trek 1120 vs Trek 920

The Trek 1120 is a bikepacking bike whereas the Trek 920 is a conventional touring bike. The 920 has 12-speeds compared to the 1120, which has 11. There is a lot more room for storage on the Trek 1120 than the 920.

They are similar in that they both have an aluminum frame and hydraulic brake system. Trek 1120 has a more aggressive riding position which is better for rougher terrains, and the Trek 920 is more comfortable for riding on long rides with lots of road and flat trails.

More: Why the Trek Verve+ 2 Should Be Your Next Hybrid E-Bike

The Trek 1120 is a powerful, durable touring bike that is best used when you need a bike that can handle all kinds of terrains. For road use, the riding position of the bike is a little too aggressive to be comfortable for long periods. It shines the most when used for touring that requires lower speeds and over off-road terrains. It has a great rear rack system for storing your gear on your tour. It is a top-rated mountain bike for adventurous cyclists.

Trek 920 Review: What’s an adventure bike?

Joining the ever-burgeoning ranks of the ‘adventure bike’, Trek’s 920 aims to rewrite the classic touring rulebook. For a start, it uses a lightweight aluminum frame, the latest in industry thru-axle standards, and sports clearances for 2.2in 29er tires. There’s custom racks and provision for 6 water bottles too. But does this mean it can really go where no touring bike has previously been? Skyler Des Roches takes one to British Colombia to find out…

Author Photo

PUBLISHED Aug 30, 2016

It’s clear on paper that the Trek 920 is a category-confused bike. Is it a drop-bar 29er? A touring bike? A monster-cross or all-road thing? Several companies are calling similar machines “adventure bicycles”. What does that even mean? How does the curious mating of spec and geometry often found in this newly-minted category play out on planet Earth?

While I’ll concede that I don’t think it really matters what particular narrow niche a bike is labeled under, I do think that knowing what a bike does best is extremely useful when shopping. In a world where the word adventure has been appropriated by urban dog-walkers and picnickers, my challenge in reviewing Trek’s answer to the “adventure bike” was to figure out what the hell this bike was for.

From afar, the Trek 920 looks a lot like many of this year’s new breed of gravel or randonneur bikes. But, those bikes are adapted cyclocross or road designs and can usually fit 700x40c tires or more voluminous, but smaller diameter 27.5×2.1” (650Bx53) mountain bike tires. The 920 comes set up with Bontrager Duster Elite 29er wheels, and clearance for up to about 29×2.25” (untested, so this might depend on the tire). Running the stock Bontrager XR1 tires, which measure 29×2.0” (or 700Cx51 if you prefer), there is even space for fenders.

Trek 920 Review

One upside to the bike industry’s new love for the word “adventure” is that it has provided an opportunity for bike manufacturers to break some of the old rules of touring bikes. Gone is the old singular meaning of adventure cycling, the one that meant loading up a small mountain of gear strapped to front and rear racks, just sort of suffering along whatever road, and praying that the equipment would hold up.

These days, adventure means, well, just about anything if you believe the marketing. It’s the hottest thing in cycling, and everyone wants a slice. Adventure biking is being used simultaneously as a category, and an all-encompassing activity. Full-suspension mountain bike – adventure; hardtail – definitely adventure; cross bike – whiskey and adventure; expensive road bike – hella adventurizing. The spirit of adventure never changed, but the old rule book – the one that required 26” wheels, Schwalbe solid rubber tires, rim brakes, drop bars, 36 spoke wheels, square-tapers, leather and steel – has been shown out the back door. It’s rather confusing from a marketing perspective, so it’s perhaps understandable that the 920 would appear so category-confused.

At its core, Trek’s 920 seems to aim to achieve the same thing as those rule-bound classic touring bikes, but freed the Luddite mentality that is becoming less and less necessary for international touring as bikes get more reliable, and a variety of parts more easily available around the world. Its aluminum frame features thru-axles, internal cable-routing, a bent top tube that allows three bottle cages within the front triangle on sizes 56cm and up, braze-ons for front and rear racks (which come included), and bottle cage mounts on each fork leg and below the down tube. That’s a total of six bottle mounts on the frame and fork. The aluminum material is exotic in itself for a touring bike, but it allows for a bike that weighs only 26lbs in size 58cm.

Trek 920 Review

Though a frame will always be the heart of a bike, I’d guess that the 920 is the sort of bike that will almost always be purchased and ridden as a complete package. As such, the stock parts spec will be important to most people looking at this bike.

The 920’s build, with a few exceptions, offers a build spec that will come as a breath of fresh air for cycle tourists: its components, for the most part, are exceedingly well-suited to the unique needs of pedaling a loaded bike. Namely, its mountain bike gearing, powerful brakes, decent tires, and strong racks will mean forgoing some common component swaps made to brand new touring bikes.

  • Frame 100 Series Alpha aluminum w/rack + fender mounts
  • Fork Trek Adventure alloy disc, 15mm thru-axle
  • Rims Bontrager Duster Elite Tubeless Ready
  • Hubs 15mm front, 142×12 rear
  • Tires Bontrager XR1, 29×2.0″
  • Shifters SRAM 500 TT, bar end control, 10 speed
  • Front derailleur SRAM X5
  • Rear derailleur SRAM X7, Type 2
  • Crank SRAM S1000, 42/28T
  • Cassette SRAM PG-1030, 11-36, 10 speed

  • Headset FSA IS-3, 1-1/8″ threadless, sealed cartridge bearings
  • Brakeset TRP Hylex hydraulic disc

A highlight reel

  • Tubeless ready wheels with asymmetrical spokes (for more even spoke tension).
  • Bontrager 29×2.0” XR1 Comp tires: cheap yes, but also pretty ideal for rolling efficiently on gravel and paved surfaces. I was able to run these tires tubeless for duration of the test, even if they’re not a tubeless ready tire.
  • 2×10 Sram X7 mountain drivetrain: mountain bike drivetrain on a drop bar bike?! A 42/28 crankset?! Pinch me. This gear range is actually suitable for cycle touring.
  • TRP Hylex hydraulic disc brakes: because being able to actually stop a loaded drop bar touring bike is something the world deserves. Unlike mechanical disc brakes, these are set-and-forget, requiring zero maintenance.
  • Thru-axles: because if it’s going to have mountain bike wheels, it’d better be able to run common mountain bike wheels. They also surely add a degree of stiffness, stability, and strength to the frame when stressed by heavy loads.
  • Custom racks: yup, the 920 comes with front and rear racks designed to mount specifially to this bike, and as far as I can tell, they’re bomber.

Trek 920 Review

There were only a couple of parts that were immediately unimpressive. First, the saddle did not agree at all with my posterior. I guess that’s a matter of personal preference. Second, the stock stem lengths are atrociously out of whack with the bike’s geo. Consider that Specialized’s AWOL has very similar front end geometry, and specs a 70mm stem on the size L. The 58cm Trek reviewed here came with a 110mm fishing pole.

Now, I’m a relatively averagely proportioned 6’2” tall man. I’ve never come across a bike that was offered in 58cm where the correct size for me wasn’t 58cm. I don’t doubt that the stock stem length will work for some folks out there, but I’d have hoped Trek would aim for average. As it was, I immediately swapped to an 85mm stem, and would probably be happier with a 70mm.

Besides that, there are a few spec choices that don’t quite fit with the nature of the bike. They’re not huge detriments, but they add to the category confusion of the Trek 920.

I guess it’s not really fair to be puzzled at the bar-end shifters – I know why they’re there. Reason 1: this is a $2000 drop bar bike with hydraulic disc brakes. They’ve got to cut cost somewhere and bar-cons are a good way to do that. Reason 2: there’s an old notion that bar-end shifters are a good choice for touring. Part of this idea comes from a sort of retro-grouch mentality that says simple is inherently more durable. I disagree, but I’ll get to that. Part of the old appeal of bar-end shifting stems from the flexibility of friction shifting. Bent derailleurs or derailleur hangers can sometimes be limped home with some amount of shifting in friction mode. Alas, while Sram 10 speed allows the mixing of road shifters with mountain drivetrains, those Sram bar-cons cannot be switched to friction mode.

Trek 920 Review

But given the wide tires, thru-axles, hydraulic disc brakes, aluminum frame and tubeless wheels, I’d think the 920 was beyond all that – a 21st century answer to the touring category. Rather than providing any sort of real advantage to reliability, the bar-end shifters just place thin aluminum shift levers in one of the most vulnerable places on a bicycle. If the bike falls over, which is likely to happen at some point if you use front panniers, there’s a real possibility of breaking or bending the shifter lever.

You and I can likely live with all that given the rest of the spec. The real annoyance came when I thought to myself “damn, this bike could almost pass as a real mountain bike. I should turn off on that singletrack right there.” Or maybe it was that all the underbiking I saw the last time I checked that well-known cycling fashion blog. You know, the one where they’re always riding absurdly expensive road bikes on California singletrack.

And even that started out great. It was a blast right up until the first short, punchy climb. I stood up on the pedals, spine curled and hands deep in the back of the drops when cluuunk…instant knee-to shifter contact. Gear 1 to 10 in one second flat. Game over, no more climbing. Those accidental knee-shifts all but prevented me from using this bike as a drop-bar mountain bike.

Given that those shifters and racks are good indicators that Trek may have intended the 920 to fill the role of a classic touring bike (while somewhat extending its utility onto unsealed surfaces) the 28-spoke wheels are also surprising. Sure, 28-spoke wheels are common for all manner of mountain biking these days, including such high wheel-abuse activities as enduro racing. The Bontrager Duster Elite wheelset is built using asymmetrical rims, which provide more even spoke tension, and may allow them to hold their own against higher spoke-count hoops. But, wheels are subject to a lot of abuse when riding corrugated roads with four bursting panniers, as might be expected on a 920. Fortunately, throughout the test, the Bontrager wheels showed no sign of struggling, though I never did ride the bike loaded with more than about 15kg.

Trek 920 Review

With its long 465mm chain stays, its very low 85mm bottom bracket drop, and its high trail fork, the Trek 920 is built for stability above all. Combined with the large wheels, this has the down side of making the bike decidedly not nimble. This is, perhaps, its weakness. It is especially noticeable when the bike plays dual duty as a commuter. Even though my commute times were not noticeably slower than on my positively zippy little 90’s mountain bike-commuter conversion, the 920 felt very slow to accelerate, and far less eager to take 90 degree corners at speed. It made up for time, however, by easily cruising at speeds similar to a road bike.

With a front load, that high-trail fork exacerbates the lack of maneuverability, making it ride as if on rails. This is likely of benefit moving fast on open roads, but I’d advise against riding with a front load bias off-road. Note that, despite the recent resurgence of front loading – a style of touring long popular amongst randonneurs and their low trail bikes – the 920 and the likes of Specialized’s AWOL have very similar trail measurements, and are not actually any more suitable for front-loading off pavement than other bikes. Instead, I found the 920 handled best with a slight rearward weight bias, or close to even front-to-back weight distribution.

Loaded up on smooth back-roads, whether dirt or pavement, this stability plays to its favour. On one lightly-loaded two-night trip, I was able to maintain close to a 25km/h moving average on smooth gravel roads – much higher than my usual plodding pace. Once up to speed, I could sit in the drops and go, and go, and go…I rode 60km of dirt roads in falling snow for lunch with friends, and 60km back along sloppy mud roads in the rain. The next day, 80km before lunch. These are not my usual sorts of backroad riding days, I’m really not that fit.

Trek 920 Review

This efficiency is no doubt one of the few benefits of drop bar bikes for dirt road touring. I find the riding position (after the stem switch) generally more powerful, and less energy-consuming on the 920 than I’m used to. That said, this being a demo bike, I did not have the opportunity to cut the steerer tube to my preferred length. I found the drops often felt too low, while the hoods felt too high. On one trip, I added some aero bars. By rotating between the three riding positions – climb on the hoods, rotate between the drops and aero bars on flats, and descend in the drops – I was able stay comfortable enough.

On rougher roads, such as the crushed rock logging roads found in British Columbia’s more mountainous parts, the efficient road bike-like riding position and incredible stability (lack of maneuverability) ceased to be a benefit. Instead, I found the position made it challenging to effectively absorb rough stretches, even if the bike itself encouraged me to bomb through those parts. After 100km of that sort of road, my back was sore and I was wishing for a flat bar bike. I’m convinced that a flat bar rigid 29er remains the best option over the greatest variety of terrain, even if the drop bar 29ers excel on gravel roads.

Furthermore, the low bottom bracket and bar-end shifters make it very challenging to ride the 920 on even relatively easy singletrack. Perhaps it’s because I’m used to riding modern hard tails on that sort of surface, but between the constant pedal-to-ground and knee-to-shifter strikes, I wasn’t going far on singletrack without getting frustrated. Running 2.3” tires, some of the pedal striking would surely be alleviated, and the bike would undoubtedly tackle singletrack more adeptly.

Aluminum is certainly unfashionable as a material for touring bikes. I think there is a wide notion that the “feel” of steel makes for a smoother, more comfortable ride. That may be so, but 2.0” tires do a lot for a smoother, more comfortable ride. On maintained gravel roads – that is, unsealed roads that may have a good gravel cap and get graded somewhat regularly – the 920 sails. Hitting corrugated corners at cruising speed is totally comfortable. Perhaps some of my soreness on rougher roads could be attributed to the aluminum frame material. But, I think we can really blame that discomfort to the sporty drop bar position and its difficulty dodging bumps when loaded.

  • Value for the price – impressive package for sub-$2000
  • Comes with good quality front and rear racks
  • Finally, a gear range on a touring bike that’s not too tall
  • Tire clearance for 2.0” rubber with fenders, or up to 2.3” without
  • Bottle bosses for 6 bottles in size 56cm and up, and 5 bottles below
  • Hydraulic disc brakes provide plenty of power for stopping a loaded bike
  • Surprisingly good tire spec
  • Lightweight – 26lb without racks or pedals in size 58cm, 29lbs with racks and pedals.
  • Wants to go fast.
  • Stock stem length way, way too long for average build
  • Bar-end shifters are vulnerable to damage, and impede maneuvering obstacles or climbing out of the saddle
  • Stock saddle designed without any reflection on human anatomy
  • Long rear end/high-trail fork gives away too much maneuverability for touring stability

Wrap Up: So what is an adventure bike?

Think of the Trek 920 as an updated ’classic’ touring bike. It offers the load-carrying abilities of racks and panniers teamed with modern components and materials, bringing it in at a svelte 26lb package – a relative lightweight in the touring world. Though the 29×2” tires and its generous clearances may suggest backcountry, bikepacking inclinations, the 920’s super stable geometry really shines on paved roads and smooth, non-technical dirt, the kind of terrain encountered on many of the popular touring routes. Consider it more as a ‘Touring Plus’ bike. But note that while the big tires help it ride more comfortably and safely, they don’t necessarily extend the abilities of this machine.

Trek 920 Review

Rider’s Background

When not on some longer exploratory bikepacking trip, I tend to do my riding on a mountain bike on the steep, technical trails of southwestern British Columbia. Earlier this year, I spent three months finding new bikepacking routes in Chile’s central Andes. Despite my bias toward lighter loads and harder trails, I’ve put in my time riding on pavement with four panniers, and everything in between. I’ll admit a preference toward standard flat handlebars and more upright riding positions for all but the fastest road riding.

Trek 1120

Introduction

Have you ever fantasized about exploring the world’s most remote and extreme roads? The Trek 1120 is the perfect bike touring bike for every adventurous cyclist.

First of all, the cost-effective aluminum frame gives the Trek 1120 a light and cool look that will allow you to explore the forests off the beaten path. Second, the carbon fork construction keeps the bike stable, so you won’t have to suffer too much in a mountain crash. Once again, the wide-range 1×12 Shimano drivetrain allows you to maintain a silky-smooth tune as you glide from flat roads to gravel trails. Finally, the most noteworthy feature is the Trek 1120’s proprietary rack system and included travel bag. It secures and holds an 8L capacity to solve the problem of unstable luggage on long trips.

We have two months of measurement experience with Trek 1120. To make the results more informative for you, we’ll elaborate on the Trek 1120’s performance while riding, key features, components and specifications, and other versions of the series. If you’d like to learn more about the other versions of Trek 1120, please refer to our review.

Trek 1120 General Riding

It can be said responsibly that the Trek 1120 is absolutely king in terms of riding in comfort, so you can maintain absolute strength and confidence during the journey.

This doesn’t just include male cyclists, of course. For women, the Trek 1120 has been designed accordingly, as the saddle, handlebar width, and stem length are all designed specifically for women. Trek also designed the stack height carefully, which is also Trek’s conclusion when referring to the majority of people riding. And 63.4 ° for me is the most comfortable existence, I can naturally straddle the body and maintain a relatively upright sitting position and do not feel how much effort.

Also, the nylon rubber handlebars will not make you feel your arms tingling due to the vibration. The Trek 1120 brought a lot of surprises on the eight kilometers of flat road riding. In addition, the Alpha Platinum Aluminum frame was not as bulky as I thought it would be, instead, I was able to lift it easily. Also, the 29er Bontrager is the most standard feature of a mountain bike. It performs well in loose yellow terrain and maintains a relatively stable body even in fast travel.

Of course, the Trek 1120’s user-friendliness doesn’t stop there. It presents a horizontal sliding dropout with a fixed horizontal slide, allows for a no-slip single-speed or gearing option, and offers a pull-in geometry to match each rider’s style. This has an extremely important impact on the comfort of sitting for long tours.

Not only that, but the Shimano 1x drivetrain was also a great help during the ride. I have to admit that the chain started to wobble a bit at first during the speed change, but after I made some simple adjustments it didn’t happen anymore. I must admit that the Shimano 1x drivetrain is the best configuration at this price.

Trek 1120 Long-Distance Riding

After testing the Trek 1120 for general road riding, how will the touring riding Trek 1120 perform amazingly as its main performance?

On the third day, we started in the morning and our destination was the countryside at Wiese Flats. Twenty kilometers of gravel was still a significant obstacle for the riders. It’s no exaggeration to say that Trek 1120 expands the boundaries of cycling. It comes with large-capacity luggage specs so I can add removable and interchangeable metal brackets to the front and rear of the bike to hold more bags.

The included luggage rack and durable straps easily secure the 8L bags in the rear luggage rack for optimal packing balance. I loaded up on water bottles and snacks. Of course, you can still remove them if you don’t like the extra weight. I carried a 1.5-liter water bottle in the rear of the package to solve my water shortage problem for the 20 miles.

Also, the Bontrager TLR (tubeless ready road) fitted to the Trek 1120 is the first fully integrated tubeless system for road tires. I can reduce pressure to increase traction and comfort. There is also a special anti-puncture system that eliminates the threat of flat tires and eliminates my worries. You know I was spending over $200 on tire maintenance before.

Of course, gravel bumps are a nuisance that has to be dealt with on a trip, but it’s clear that the Trek 1120 still handles well. The carbon fork construction does not add any weight to the body, while still providing good damping. In addition, the fork can be seen moving up and down during the descent, and with the DebonAir springs reinforcing the compatibility of the Trek 1120 itself, it will give me the ultimate riding experience.

Main Features

Trek 1120

The Trek 1120 gives the impression of being full of security. The front and rear removable brackets in crimson keep the body stable while expanding the space. There is also an 8L capacity bag that can be easily fixed and easily installed to meet your long-distance travel needs.

In terms of body material, aluminum may not have the same plasticity as carbon. But light enough and strong, as well as super cost-effective, is already the best choice.

Although there is some regret in the color, the navy blue currently on sale may not meet the needs of colorful enthusiasts.

The geometry of the stealth configuration is also the result of many considerations for the Trek 1120, and it has proven to be very comfortable indeed. The seat tube angle was chosen to be steeper (70.4°), thus allowing for better weight configuration when going uphill.

In addition, the Trek 1120’s wide, thick 29er tires were considered to be unstable in terms of steering. Therefore, a shorter distance (44.0cm) was chosen for the length of the rear lower fork. This makes up for the insensitivity in turning and gives you the ultimate control of the body in sharp corners.

Components and Specifications

Shimano slx m7100, 12-speed.

Trek 1120 Shimano SLX M7100, 12-speed

I’ve always had great faith in the Shimano brand, and it’s a result of the extreme experience Trek 1120 has always delivered. 1x is the standard for mountain bikes, eliminating overly complicated shifting and allowing for silky smooth shifting with a single-handed turn of the slide. Both the silky smooth shifting and its rich, dense gear ratios provide fast, seamless shifts and remain quiet and stable.

1120 HCM Carbon Fork

The carbon fork is the biggest highlight of Trek 1120. It has a better damping ability than aluminum alloy, while still maintaining a lighter size and weight. It provides ample mid-stroke low-speed compression even on gravelly winding trails, enhancing smoothness and safety.

Of course, the 120mm of travel is also not to be overlooked, keeping the bike extremely stable during the up-and-down travel. As a touring bike, the 1120 Adventure frame system can maintain a large volume.

Shimano 4-Piston Hydraulic Disc Brake

Trek 1120 himano 4-Piston Hydraulic Disc Brake

Shimano 4-piston hydraulic disc brakes incorporate our unique brake design with a new track vent design for smooth, quiet braking performance. When I need to stop in a hurry, I can brake by simply pressing and holding the control on the handlebars. In addition, the 4-piston braking capability exhibits even better emergency braking.

I would still like to remind you to be more careful in your daily use. Otherwise, the repair costs it brings will also be to make your wallet bring a small trauma.

Tires: Bontrager XR2

Trek 1120

Tires are one of the most critical factors in customer selection. This is why Trek 1120 chose the Bontrager XR2, which has a wider and heavier size of 29×3.00″ compared to other normal off-road tires. This also means that it has a more stable grip on the road.

All of these have also been reflected in my daily fitness routine. Of course, you can also choose a smaller tire size, such as 27.5×2.5 in exchange for a more compact body.

Other versions of Trek 1120

Other versions of Trek 1120

For you to have more possibilities in choosing. So in the spirit of objectivity and fairness, we have tested the other models of the Trek 1120 series for a certain period. This includes the 2019 Trek 1120.

The 2019 Trek 1120 has a bulkier body, so it can be a real pain in the ass once you hit a roadblock that you can’t pass. Also, although it is a 1x system, there is no major difference in drivability.

The 2019 Trek 1120 is the choice of an 11-speed configuration, which might not be good news for those with strict speed requirements. As for the rest, these two don’t feel much different to me. If price is not a major factor for you, I would recommend the Trek 1120, which will give you a more interesting experience.

What we like about it

  • The aluminum frame brings a ride with excellent cost performance.
  • Adjustable rear horizontal sliding rear fork brings freedom of choice.
  • The carbon fork provides a stable riding feeling.
  • The 8L capacity ensures that there is enough space to assemble the luggage.
  • Body design specific to female riders.

  • Rare color options
  • Expensive relative to components

The Trek 1120 is priced at $2,999.

  • What is the body material of Trek 1120?

The body of Trek 1120 is made of aluminum.

  • What is the tire size of Trek 1120?

 Comparison Table

Trek 1120 vs trek 920.

2021 Trek 920

I have to admit that the Trek 920 has a relative advantage in terms of weight, as the aluminum frame isn’t as bulky as I thought it would be. But obviously, it may be a bit lacking in terms of shock absorption. This is mainly because the aluminum fork does not have the same toughness as carbon during movement.

However, the Trek 1120 has an 1120 HCM Carbon fork configuration that won’t make you feel this way, after all, carbon fiber absorbs vibration better than aluminum would. Some may think that the 2× speed change may be more complicated. So as a novice, you seek a simple speed change, then the Trek 1120 is still your best choice.

In short, it has certain advantages, both in terms of price and terms of absorbing vibrations.

Trek 1120 vs Salsa Fargo Apex 1

2020 Salsa Fargo Apex 1

The Salsa Fargo Apex 1 is indeed a good alternative vehicle for the price party, while the 11.1kg weight is friendly even for female riders.

However, it must be said that the Salsa Fargo Apex 1 will be a little behind in the selection of components. The rigid frame may not be as light as aluminum as well as durable, and it will also have a good sense of vibration for riding on gravel roads.

But the good thing is that the Salsa Fargo Apex 1 still opts for the 1x system in terms of drivetrain, thus eliminating the need for complicated speed control operations. As an entry-level touring vehicle, the Salsa Fargo Apex 1 is certainly qualified.

However, in our actual review, the Trek 1120’s 1×12 drivetrain was trustworthy as well as giving us a thumbs up for both the smoothness of the shifts and the 12 speeds available.

If, however, you are focused on more variable speed and smoother tuning, I think the Trek 1120 is one of the can’t-miss choices.

Salsa Fargo Apex 1 Review – An Unexpected Experience

Trek 1120 vs Trek 520

2023 Trek 520

It’s worth noting that the Trek 520 was the fastest vehicle in our five group measurements (the fastest trip reached 61km/h). This is quite competitive for smaller trail riding competitions.

At the same time, the 700c tires grip the ground and the Bontrager H1 Hard-case tires have a rough aramid bead surface to give you the ultimate stability on the ride. But the 3x system is really hard for me to handle easily. The wide range of speed options also means it takes more time.

Needless to say, the Trek 1120 1×12 drivetrain is a popular mountain bike setup today. It shows that it has simple and smooth shifting, as well as a relatively wide speed range. It is an excellent choice for both novice mountain bikers and trail enthusiasts.

So, if the price is not your main consideration in choosing a bike, then I would recommend the Trek 1120 to you.

Trek 1120 vs Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3 650b

Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3 650b

We can see that the Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3 650b comes with a hefty price tag, but the components it comes with are also satisfying.

carbon frame and fork is its standard configuration, so the strong body is tough at the same time. However, the 2x system does not have the same rapid speed adjustment process as the 1x. But the high power and wide range of the Shimano system will still give some cyclists a more interesting riding experience. In addition, the 58km/h speed will still give you great confidence in the cross-country competition.

Although, the Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3 650b has a more prominent body design and better body materials. But if you think the Trek 1120 is a loser, you probably don’t know the Trek 1120 that well. First of all, the Trek 1120 has better rolling efficiency thanks to the 29×3.00” Bontrager XR2 Team Issue tires. Secondly, despite the aluminum bodywork, it is not bulky and can be mastered well even by female riders. Finally, the 1× speed shift is also very friendly for novices.

Yes, if you are a Shimano1x fan and you want more speed Trek 1120 is the right choice for you.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

trek 1020 touring bike

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

trek 1020 touring bike

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

trek 1020 touring bike

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

trek 1020 touring bike

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

trek 1020 touring bike

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

trek 1020 touring bike

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

trek 1020 touring bike

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Down from $1,799, we’ve seen this e-bike fall to lower rates only twice in the past – once over the last summer when it dropped to $1,399 and way back during its pre-order launch sale when we saw it dropped to $1,299 (and has never returned to since). This is the third-lowest price overall and the second-lowest price we’ve seen since it was released, matching Black Friday rates, but with the added bonus of a free extra battery – valued at $500 – giving you $700 in total savings. Learn more below or by reading our  hands-on review .

With the  RadWagon 4  you’ll be getting a cargo-hauling e-bike that is as reliable as it is resilient, carrying you at top speeds of 20 MPH for a range of up to 45+ miles (which is doubled with the extra battery). Sporting a 750W motor paired alongside a 672Wh battery, it comes with a half-twist throttle for pure electric action, as well as five levels of pedal assistance (which won’t drain your battery as fast). Other notable features include custom 22-inch by 3-inch tires, fenders for both tires, a water-resistant wiring harness, a 200-lumen headlight, an integrated taillight with brake light functionality, an integrated rear storage rack, and a backlit LCD display for real-time performance data and settings control – plus it even has a USB port to charge your devices while riding.

Rad Powers has also added the  step-thru version of the RadRover 6 Plus Fat-Tire e-bike  as well, coming in $100 above its high-step counterpart at  $1,199 shipped , down from $1,599, and lacking the free extra battery deal. Nicknamed Rad Power’s “beast of a bike,” it sports the same motor size, battery, and five levels of pedal assistance as the above model, hitting the same speed at its normal mileage as well. And it can certainly handle going off the paved roads thanks to its water-resistant connectors and wiring harness, as well as a pair of 26-inch by 4-inch puncture-resistant fat tires with fenders over each.

And be sure to check out our  earlier coverage of this same sale  for the other e-bike models that are included. And as a reminder, the free battery discount will be automatically applied when both your preferred e-bike model and the battery are added to your cart – no coupons or promo codes needed. While you still have time to make your decisions, the deadline of May 29 is fast approaching, with Summer’s official arrival not far behind – do you want to walk into the new season, or cruise on through it in style and comfort?

Segway Ninebot GoKart Pro drifting on racing track, within post for Rad Power e-bikes

Segway Ninebot GoKart Pro falls to $1,600 with rare discount

While Amazon’s  early Memorial Day sales  are still going strong, we’ve been surprised to see few EVs having any major discounts. Today, however, that surprise is turned back the other way as Amazon is now offering a rare deal on the  Segway Ninebot GoKart Pro for  $1,599.99 shipped . Normally fetching $2,300, even through most sales events, we’ve seen the price keep above $1,800 since the start of 2024, with only the occasional discounts to chip away at its MSRP. Today’s deal comes in as one of the largest across its EV lineup, ultimately bagging you $700 in savings and dropping it to the second-lowest price overall – while also being the current 2024 low, as well.

Sporting an adjustable frame length and steering wheel height, the  Ninebot GoKart Pro  is geared up for riders from 4-foot 5 inches to 6-foot 3 inches tall and weighing up to 220 pounds. You’ll be zipping around the streets and tracks alike at up to 23 MPH with a 15.5-mile range on a single charge. You can even drift like a pro with its engine located on its backside, its rear-wheel-drive, and its rear TPE tires working alongside its Drift Assist system (activated through the companion app) that lets you pre-program your drifting preferences based on your own style and your riding site conditions. There’s even a bonus EV you can take advantage of by detaching the included  Ninebot S Max self-balancing scooter  that powers the whole thing. Head below for more.

Weight (L w/racks): 29.4 lbs (13.3 kg) Price: $2,499. Following suit, the 1120 was a natural progression for Trek. 5. Trek 1120 Review

  7. Trek 1120 (29+) Adventure Bike Review

The 1120 is very similar to a Trek Stache 29+ Wheels mounted to a pretty unique aluminum frame. The 1120 shares the same symmetrical elevated chainstay and adjustable Stranglehold dropouts, but it's 15 mm longer than the Stache to accommodate loaded touring. I know a lot of people hate-on the big 3 US bike brands, but in the case of the 1120 ...

  10. 2021 Trek 1120

Trek 1120 review. Trek's 1120 is an off-road touring machine quite unlike anything else out there. 11. Trek 1120 Review: Is It The Best Touring Bike?
