First Look: Trek’s 2013 Bikes Are Its Fastest Yet

Trek Goes High Tech

this image is not available

Near the beginning of Trek's 2013 mountain bike introduction in Cortina, Italy, senior product manager John Riley made this statement, “Technology: It's what we're known for at Trek." Prior to 2007, you couldn't say that about Trek's mountain bikes. Until then, the focus was clearly on that Lance guy and the company’s road bikes. That changed in 2007 when Trek opened a facility in Valencia, California, for suspension R&D and, for model year 2008, they introduced the Active Braking Pivot (ABP) suspension system (shown above). Since then, the brand has been on a tear and it now offers a complete line of high-performance mountain bikes. Next year’s bikes look to be some of the most advanced, refined models yet. Here’s what to expect.

At first glance, the Fuel appears to have changed little, but the bike has been completely redesigned. Front and rear travel has been increased 10mm to 130mm and the suspension's pivot placement and leverage ratios are revised as well to provide more efficient pedaling through the sag range. Trek updated the geometry, too: The chainstays are almost 10mm shorter and the BB sits lower at ride height. Trek also added ISCG 05 tabs and a removable front derailleur mount for a clean look when paired with single front-chainring drivetrains. The frame accommodates both external and RockShox Reverb Stealth-style internal dropper post routing. There’s toptube’s standover height has also been reduced. The 2013 EX comes in two aluminum platforms and three carbon platforms that have different rear triangles—one is made of aluminum alloy, one has aluminum chainstays with carbon seatstays, another is full carbon. Depending on the model, frames weigh between 3.9 pounds and 5.4 pounds.

Trek's 120mm full-suspension 29er receives only minor updates to its components. The Pro and Elite models now come with Fox’s CTD suspension and either Shimano’s Shadow + or SRAM’s Type 2 clutch-driven rear derailleur. Surprisingly, Trek plans on sticking with Fox’s 32 fork instead of the stiffer 34 model. When probed, Trek product managers said that they designed the Rumblefish to be a light, snappy 29er trail bike. A 34, they feel, would significantly change the bike’s character—something that would demand a purpose-built platform. Does that mean Trek has a long travel 29er in the works? The engineers we asked only responded with sly smiles.

The Stache (as in mustache) is an aluminum 29er with a 120mm fork. Trek calls it a “play bike” designed for riders who want an aggressive hardtail. The frame features ISCG mounts, 12x142mm rear thru axle and dropper post routing (for posts with either external or Stealth-style cable routing). Other details include a press-fit BB, post-mount rear brake installations and internal derailleur housing routing. Trek will offer two models, both of which are equipped with a 2x10 drivetrain and Shimano's Shadow + rear derailleur. The higher-end Stache 8 has a Fox 32 Evolution fork with 15QR, Bontrager tubeless-ready rims, Shimano XT rear derailleur, and SLX shifters, front derailleur and brakes. The less expensive Stache 7 has a RockShox Recon fork with 15mm Maxle, Avid Elixir 1 brakes, Bontrager tubeless-ready rims, and Shimano SLX shifters and derailleurs.

Apollo Program

Trek recently created an internal brain trust that it calls Apollo. The group includes Trek employees across a range of fields—from engineering, industrial design, graphics and others departments—who are tasked to re-imagine bike design with few limits placed on following existing conventions or standards. The group recently overhauled the Trek’s two Superfly SL models (the 100mm-travel full-suspension bike and a hardtail) with the goal of building Trek's lightest-ever race bikes. The result was dramatic weight reduction. The 2013 Superfly SL hardtail now boasts a frame weight of 896 grams (2 pounds), 254 grams lighter than the current model. The full-suspension SL 100 now tips the scales at just 1,850 grams (4.1 pounds), 513 grams less than the 2012 model.

Superfly 100 SL

In addition dropping a pound from the frame, Trek also changed several elements of the Superfly 100 to make it faster. Travel on the 29er was reduced by 10mm to 100mm and the suspension was tuned for a firmer feel with a more progressive stroke—similar to Trek’s 26-inch race bike, the Top Fuel. The bike also has internal cable routing that is compatible with most RockShox and Fox shocks with handlebar remotes. Engineers also raised the bottom bracket 5mm for more clearance and slackened the head angle by 1 degree to add stability. The bike’s seat tube also takes a curved shape to increase mud clearance in front of the rear tire. Despite losing a pound, the frame is slightly stiffer than the current model, Trek claims. Complete bike weights start at 21.4 pounds.

Superfly SL

Like the Superfly 100, the SL hardtail comes in much lighter for 2013, with no reduction in frame stiffness. In fact, Trek claims the headtube is even stiffer than the current model. And because Trek racers requested a smoother ride so they could stay seated in rough terrain, the new frame is more compliant than past versions. To reduce trail-induced chatter, Trek created what it calls a “roll-wrapped” seat-tube. The name refers to the manufacturing process—it’s formed like a carbon handlebar and is bonded into the otherwise complete frame. The post doubles the frame’s vertical compliance, and offers more give than the Scott Scale or Cannondale Flash, Trek says. The redesigned model also features dropouts that accept either thru-axle or standard quick-release rear skewers and post-mount rear brake installations that place the caliper’s forward mounting bolt on the chainstay and the rear post on the seatstay. The bike will make its competition debut at the London Olympics, where it will be raced by Canadian Emily Batty and American Sam Schultz. Complete bike weights start just below 19 pounds.

DRCV Fork Air Volume Adjusters

Trek now offers spacer kits to fine tune the spring curve of its proprietary, Fox-made DRCV (Dual Rate Control Valve) forks. Two options—5cc and 10cc—reduce the air spring to provide a more progressive curve. The kits work with 120mm, 130mm and 150mm Fox 32 forks for 26-inch and 29er wheels.

2013 Trek Mountain bikes actual weights - Stache

Trek introduced their 2013 models with separate and sporadic announcements for road and mountain bikes over the course of the year. Now, we’ve gone hands on with the scale to get actual weights for most of the new models. Included are a few links to past coverage for details along with a few notes based on our observations and quick chats with their demo folks.

Above: Stache – XL – 26lb 3oz (11.74kg)

Each bike is listed as “Model – Size – Weight”. Most have one or two bottle cages on them. Enjoy…

20120826-131819.jpg

Lush SL Alloy – 17.5 – 27lb 3oz (12.32kg)

Bikes are shown in random order, the Lush Carbon is further down. Both bikes are pretty good looking, we’re anxious to see the 29er version when it rolls out. More on the women’s mountain bikes and CrossRip here .

20120826-132023.jpg

Cali SL – 17.5 – 26lb 10oz (12.06kg)

20120826-132108.jpg

Slash – 17.5 – 29lb 13oz (13.58kg)

20120826-132305.jpg

Fuel EX Alloy – 15.5 – 27lb (12.19kg)

Anyone else notice that the Top Fuel is gone from the lineup? It’s absence is Trek’s way of saying the short travel 26″ XC bike is history. Now we wait to see if it comes back in 27.5″/650B form.

20120826-132613.jpg

Remedy 9.8 Carbon – 15.5 – 26lb 15oz (12.29kg)

20120826-132703.jpg

Superfly 100 Elite SL – 19 – 23lb 12oz (10.84kg)

The hardtail Superfly SL wasn’t on hand. One of the reps said they weighed one of these 100s with pedals and seat bag and it was just under 26lbs. Details on both Superfly bikes and the Stache here .

20120826-132903.jpg

Fuel EX Carbon – 19.5 – 26lb 6oz (12.04kg)

20120826-133006.jpg

Rumblefish Pro 29er – 15.5 – 28lb 11oz (13.01kg)

20120826-133046.jpg

Lush Carbon – 15.5 – 24lb 11oz (11.37kg)

20120826-133159.jpg

Lexa SLX Alloy – 52 – 19lb 13oz (9.01kg)

The Lexa is the women’s version of the alloy Domane. I pushed on the saddle hard and it doesn’t have nearly the flex as the carbon model we reviewed . More info on the alloy Domane and 2013 Trek Madone here .

20120826-133710.jpg

Domane WSD Six Series Carbon – 54 – 16lb 3oz (7.34kg)

20120826-133751.jpg

Madone WSD Six Series Carbon – 52 – 15lb 4oz (7.19kg)

For the carbon frames, the Madone and Domane are essentially the same between men’s and WSD (Women’s Specific Design) bikes, but spec changes to accommodate gender differences in reach and anatomy.

20120826-134004.jpg

Madone Six Series Carbon – 58 – 16lb 6oz (7.45kg)

20120826-134049.jpg

Domane Six Series Carbon – 58 – 16lb 15oz (7.69kg)

In addition to our review linked above, basic bike info is here . The alloy Domane wasn’t at the demo. Trek Greensboro shop owner Chris said the biggest thing you’d notice on the alloy model is the longer wheelbase and geometry rather than the bump absorption. We’ll be testing this theory out later this fall as well as getting some time on the new Madone. It’s worth pointing out the minimal weight difference between the Domane and Madone bikes here.

Must have just missed you at the demo today! Looks like I’ll be on a SF 100 SL next year…

When you gonna shoot me a line? I still want to help with product testing 🙂

Henry

New Treks require you to turn the bars 190 degrees off center for the wheel to go straight? What a great innovation.

mtb

LOL!!! Yeah, what’s up with the handlebars?

As for weight, they seem pretty heavy, compared to similar bikes from other brands.

Henry

Awesome! Thanks for posting these. And, is the weight accurate for the (pictured) Superfly 100 Elite SL – 19 – 23lb 12oz? If so, that’s impressively lighter than last years! And very light for an XT 29er. Might have just found my next mountain bike!

wigs

mtb = clueless about weights

Kevin

Also worth noting that although there is minimal weight difference between the Madone and Domane 6-series bikes, they have considerable different ride characteristics, and the Madone 6 and 7-series are still made in the States, while all the Domanes are made overseas.

Justin

Exact models would be nice…the component group has a bigger impact than what series the frame is in many cases.

The Dude

The cockpit is turned 90 degrees so they can fit side-by-side in the demo trailer.

Evan

One reason for the extra weight versus competitors is due to the use of Shimano Ultegra groups on the above bikes, which, while having great shift quality and durability, is on the heavy side. I would know, I have a 6 Series SSL with it and getting it to 6.4 kilo’s was difficult.

Why there’s no Remedy alloy to compare like Remedy 9?

MTB = idiot who must not look at weights of the 29ers. What other brands are you talking about? Niner? Santa Cruz? Makes no sense when you make comments that you do not back up with the info?

LG

Hi all, I’m looking for a weight measurement for a 58 ion cx pro. If you have one you can throw on a scale, or have seen this info published somewhere let me know. Thanks

The stock 2013 Fuel EX 8 in 18.5, weighs exactly 29lbs (13.15kg) including the Shimano PD-M540 pedals (352g).

jumpin G Hossiphat

those waits look really heavy when compared to tom waits.

stp

Actually the men’s 6 series madone/domane’s were closer to 9.8lbs when you take off that bike computer, it’s manufactured with depleted uranium.

DJ Crossmax

The Remedy lineup is hands down the best AM rig out there. Having owned both 9E and 9.8 versions I with throw my money at the screen to buy a 650b Remedy. Come on Trek you have loyal customers waiting for this to happen.

Trek 4500 Mountain Bike Review: Is it worth your money?

trek 2013 mountain bikes

Mountain biking is an exhilarating and fulfilling hobby, but let’s be real, it can also be pretty expensive.

Luckily, there are plenty of great budget bikes on the market that don’t compromise on performance. Today, we’re going to take a closer look at one of those bikes – the Trek 4500 Mountain Bike.

So, if you’re in the market for a bike that won’t break the bank but still offers plenty of features and versatility, stick around for this review.

Trek 4500 MTB At A Glance

trek 2013 mountain bikes

Trek 4500 is an amazing hardtail mountain bike from Trek. It provides good riding on technical trails, and the lightweight frame makes it very convenient for beginners.

Trek 4500 inspires confidence on the trail with solid handling and durable components. It sports 26-inch tires and a suspension fork to smooth out bumps and major impacts.

It also comes with a Shimano drivetrain, a RockShox Dart 2 fork, and with sturdy double-walled rims, so you can roll over anything with confidence. Also, the hydraulic disc brakes in the later models deliver precise stopping ability.

  • High quality aluminum frame
  • Durable components
  • Reliable brakes and gears
  • Sturdy wheels and tires
  • Complex 3X drivetrain
  • Small 26-inch wheels

Unfortunately, Trek doesn’t make this bike anymore, but there are some really impressive newer models with better designs which are excellent alternatives to the 4500 Trek mountain bike.

I recommend Trek Marlin 5 and Trek Fuel EX 5 as great alternatives, you can scroll down to see our brief review of these bikes.

Trek 4500 Mountain Bike: Features and Specifications

Frame and fork.

Trek 4500 Mountain Bike is the perfect companion for beginner trail riders who want a lightweight and durable bike that can handle mountain trails with ease.

The hardtail aluminum frame makes it an excellent budget bike, with a trail-taming front suspension that absorbs impacts and road noise.

It comes equipped with a RockShox Dart 2 with 100mm travel suspension fork, which might not be the lightest, but it is super strong and very reliable.

trek 2013 mountain bikes

Actually, the Suntour XCM suspension on the Trek 4500 makes it a budget to mid-range bike that packs a punch. And the relatively tight head tube angle that offers flexible handling for easy steering and control, especially during climbs and descents.

With its great budget fork, the Trek 4500 is quite comfortable on longer rides and actually able to handle some riding on technical trails.

From my experience, the Trek 4500 is an excellent choice for beginners who want to hit the trails with confidence and style.

Gears and Brakes

Shimano is well-known for making reliable gears with smooth shifting and easy maintenance. And the Trek 4500 features Shimano components, it has the Shimano Alivio groupset.

With the Trek 4500, you get an incredible range of gearing, from low gears that smoothly take up steep climbs to a good range of high gears for fast descents.

Before this bike model was discontinued, it had many different models, and a few of its features changed with each new release. For instance, the oldest models were fitted with rim brakes, but the later models were upgraded to more reliable and effective hydraulic disc brakes.

These bikes had the Shimano M395, which have excellent stopping power and will stop on a dime even in wet conditions.

Now, whether you’re just starting out on mountain trails or you’re an experienced rider, you can trust the Shimano groupset and hydraulic disc brakes to give you the performance you need to tackle any terrain.

Wheels and Tires

If you’re looking for a mountain bike with excellent handling ability and great acceleration, then the Trek 4500 is a great choice.

4500 Trek is equipped with 26″ wheels, which are smaller than other sizes like 27.5″ or 29″, but they make up for it with their maneuverability, and you can always fit larger tires.

trek 2013 mountain bikes

The wheels are designed to be strong and durable, with 32 spokes and double-walled rims, this means that you can take on any trail without worrying about your wheels getting damaged.

Plus, it comes with Bontrager 26×2.2″ tires that provide great flexibility, but the traction is not so great. Bigger and wider tires on a mountain bike are ideal for providing traction on trails with loose dirt, and they also help to absorb shocks and bumps on the trail.

Thankfully, you can always swap the 26-inches tire on the Trek 4500 for bigger ones. However, even the small tires are not so bad. With those tires, you can actually hit the trails with confidence and take on any challenge that comes your way.

The wheels and tires of the Trek 4500 are a great combination that provides excellent handling, durability, and versatility.

Saddle and Handlebars

A good saddle and adjustable handlebars are crucial components of a mountain bike, as they can greatly impact your riding experience.

With a comfortable saddle, you can ride for long periods without experiencing discomfort, while adjustable handlebars allow you to customize your riding position to suit your preferences and riding style.

For the Trek 4500 though, the comfort of the saddle is highly subjective. Whether you find it comfortable or not depends on how it makes your backside feel. From my experience, not many people find it comfortable, but that’s not an issue because you can always install a better saddle.

And for the handlebars, Trek 4500 comes equipped with Bontrager handlebars, grips, and a stem. Its handlebar’s 31.8mm diameter and 15mm rise give it plenty of space for a comfortable grip when riding.

trek 2013 mountain bikes

These handlebars are quite impressive and provide excellent grip, even in wet or muddy conditions, and helps to absorb shocks and vibrations on the trail.

The bar’s robust design can withstand some abuse while being used on the trail. And the stem has a 10-degree rise, which provides a comfortable riding position while also keeping you in control of your bike.

The stem is also adjustable, allowing you to fine-tune your riding position for maximum comfort and performance.

Size and weight

Trek 4500 comes in a range of sizes to fit different riders, with options ranging from 13″ all the way up to 24″, you’re sure to find the perfect fit for you. The frame sizes are precisely 13.5, 15.5, 17.5, 18.5, 19.5, 21.5, 23.5″

And for the weight, the Trek 4500 is relatively lightweight for a mountain bike, with an average weight of about 30 lbs (13.6 kg). That means it’s easy to handle and maneuver on the trails without being too heavy to carry around when needed.

The maximum weight limit of 275 to 300 lbs is also good, providing plenty of support for a wide range of riders.

Ride quality and performance

The Trek 4500 is an all-around amazing bike. Its comfortable ride and great performance make it an excellent choice for any rider, regardless of skill level.

While it may not be the lightest bike on the market, it has an incredible range of gears, making it very adaptable and easy to conquer a variety of terrain.

Plus, its 26″ wheels provide excellent handling and acceleration, while the Bontrager XR2 26″ tires provide good grip in all kinds of conditions.

One of the best things about the Trek 4500 is its versatility. Whether you’re tackling light, dusty paths or hitting some loose terrain with serious speed, this bike can handle it all.

Its sturdy frame and durable components make it perfect for trail riding, while the adjustable handlebars and comfortable saddle ensure a comfortable ride.

I highly recommend the Trek 4500 for anyone looking for a mid-range bike that delivers outstanding performance at a great price. Its combination of affordability, versatility, and quality makes it an excellent investment for anyone who loves mountain biking.

Best Trek 4500 Mountain Bike Alternatives

As Trek doesn’t make the 4500 mountain bikes anymore, you cannot buy them brand new. But, you will find even better performing Trek mountain bikes with more advanced features and superior build quality.

If you absolutely want a Trek bike, then I recommend the Trek Fuel EX 5 or the Trek Marlin 5 as great alternatives for the Trek 4500. But if you’re willing to try a different brand, then the Schwinn Bonafide is a great choice with a much lower price tag.

Trek Fuel EX 5

trek 2013 mountain bikes

Fuel EX 5 is a very efficient full-suspension trail bike that’s ready to handle the most rugged mountain terrains. It’s built for speed, with a sturdy chassis and supportive front and rear suspension to give you loads of support on both climbs and descents.

The Trek Fuel EX 5 stands out as a high-value, high-performance mountain bike with remarkable adaptability. It’s fitted with a Shimano 1×12 drivetrain, a dropper post for getting low on descents, and hydraulic disc brakes.

As a heavy trail-rider, this bike most likely checks all the boxes on your wishlist for a new bike. It’s a sure-footed bike that delivers better stability and control. And more importantly, it’s a fun bike to ride.

Trek Marlin 5

trek 2013 mountain bikes

Trek Marlin 5 is a trail mountain bike that’s built to gracefully handle daily adventures on rough terrains. It has a lightweight aluminum frame with a 2×8 drivetrain for smooth riding and shifting and powerful hydraulic disc brakes which provide fast and precise stopping.

While the Marlin 5 is made for trail riding, it’s also versatile and can double as a commuter bike. This bike has a stunning frame with internal routing for the brake and shift cables, which can extend the lifespan of your wires by shielding them from the environment.

It’s the perfect bike for new trail riders and comes in seven frame sizes to fit riders of all heights. Marlin 5 is elegant and comfortable, with a ton of features that are typically reserved for more pricey bikes.

Schwinn Bonafide MTB

Schwinn Bonafide Men and Women Mountain Bike, Front Suspension, 24-Speed, 29-Inch Wheels, 17-Inch Aluminum Frame, Matte Black/Red

The Bonafide MTB is another great bike from Schwinn. It’s a mid-range bike with interesting features and an affordable price tag.

The Schwinn Bonafide MTB gives you a pleasant and reliable riding experience with its aluminum mountain frame and sturdy suspension fork that absorbs bumps and big hits.

As a hardtail mountain bike, it’s designed for the trail with large 29″ knobby tires and durable alloy rims. The alloy rims increase longevity without adding extra weight, while the mechanical disc brakes offer precise stopping on the trail.

The gear shifting is smooth and seamless, thanks to the 24-speed trigger shifters and front and rear derailleurs. This bike is fun and easy to ride, which makes it great for heavy riders.

Finally, is Trek 4500 mountain bike a good buy?

Well, that’s my review of the Trek 4500 Mountain Bike. I hope you found it helpful in making your decision. I know that mountain biking can be an expensive hobby, but the Trek 4500 provides a lot of value for the price.

It’s versatile, sturdy, and has a great set of features that make it a great bike for a variety of riders. So, if you’re looking for a budget-friendly mountain bike that can handle a range of terrain, the Trek 4500 might just be the bike for you.

You likely won’t find a brand-new Trek 4500, but the alternative options included above are really great choices.

Longo Borghini closes spring chapter on the final podium of La Vuelta Femenina

trek 2013 mountain bikes

The Breakdown

After a stellar spring campaign, which included wins at the Tour of Flanders and De Brabantse Pijl, Elisa Longo Borghini waves farewell to the spring from the podium of La Vuelta Femenina. Eight days ago, the Spanish Grand Tour started with a bittersweet team time trial win for Lidl-Trek in Valencia. From there, the peloton had to overcome wind, hills, and more wind before reaching the final finish line in Valdesquí, Madrid.

On the final stage, Brodie Chapman attacked early, acting as a satellite rider for Longo Borghini after the peloton was whittled down on the first-category Puerta de la Moncuera. Then, after a quick descent and ride through the valley, loomed the final climb of La Vuelta – the ascent to the Valdesquí ski resort. The Italian champion started the day placed second overall, but with only a short margin to third placed Riejanne Markus (Visma). When the Red Jersey, Demi Vollering, accelerated with 6km to go, Longo Borghini found herself in difficulty. However, in true ELB-fashion, she never gave up, fighting all the way to the line with her usual steely determination. Unfortunately, she had to concede the runner-up position to Markus by 11 seconds, but still proudly assumed the third spot on the podium with a smile, and a thank you to the Spanish fans.

Elisa’s roundup

“It was a beautiful week in Spain. I have to say that the course was a great one, overall. No stage was easy – we always raced full on! I didn’t come here in my optimal form after the tough Spring campaign I had. The team rode well, but it was a bit unfortunate for us at the beginning because we lost Ellen after the time trial, and then a few days later we lost Gaia, but we kept believing, we kept fighting.

“I was not at my very best level, but I fought hard with my teammates as we did believe until the very end that we could keep the 2nd place. In the end, it wasn’t possible and I finished 3rd. This is sport – sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. But, third place in the Vuelta is not a bad result, hey? Everyone was super supportive, so thank you to my teammates and the staff for their work. It’s sad to lose the second place, but I did my 100%, and what else can I do? You have to smile, it’s still a good result.

“I don’t think I made any mistake. I just gave my 100% and this what I got. I go home now, and I’m still happy. I am in the purple jersey as leader of the UCI Women’s WorldTour, and that means that I have been very consistent during my Spring. I’m satisfied with my first part of the season. Now it’s time to rest, reset and restart thinking of the second part of the season.”
