Trek madone 6.9 ssl first look.

trek madone leopard 6.9 ssl

Unveiled immediately prior to the prologue of the 2010 Tour de France, the Trek Madone 6.9 SSL takes Trek’s carbon technology beyond the level reached by its plain 6.9 predecessor, employing a new type of carbon fibre labelled HexSL to shave 100g without any change in the external shaping of the frame and fork.

Exclusive to Trek, HexSL matches the stiffness of high-modulus carbon fibres while offering some four times their strength and twice their elongation, or stetch before failure. This, in turn, allows the Wisconsin manufacture to match the performance figures of the previous frame while using less high-strength fibre, hence the weight saving.

In almost every other respect but for finish, the SSL, which is also offered as the 6.7 SSL model as part of the 6 series SSL range, is indistinguishable from the plain 6.9.  That means, externally, the same internal cable routing, same “ride tuned” seatmast requiring an external seat cap with saddle clamp, same fork blade and tube profiles and same dropouts and, internally, Trek’s BB90 bottom bracket bearing format and the “asymmetric ” steerer tube, which is designed to help absorb road vibration.

The SSL frame is available in seven sizes with 2cm increments from 50cm to 62cm and in two “fits”: H1 and H2. Dialled for most pro riders and for those with exceptional pelvic rotation able to reach low set handlebars, the H1 has a 30mm shorter head tube than the otherwise identical H2 fit.

Equipped with Shimano’s Dura-Ace 7900 groupset, the SSL also wears finishing kit plucked from the Bontrager catalogue and comprising a full house of components wearing the XXX Lite badge. The saddle is Bontrager’s inForm Race X Lite model and tyres are Bontrager R4 clinchers.

Overall weight of the machine with steel axle pedals is 6.2kg. Four colour options including the Onyx Carbon/Silver/Platinum shown are offered from the Trek Project One Select Series at the quoted price, with further Signature Series colour finishes available through the Project One programme at extra cost.

First ride soon.

First Look: 2011 Trek Madone 6.9 SSL

Major changes to 5 Series Madone line, too

Trek's flagship Madone 6 Series range follows in the footsteps of past Madones with a new lightweight 'SSL' variant that's 100g lighter on average - 50g has been taken out of the frame itself, 30g thanks to lighter paint processes, and another 20g courtesy of a standard Cane Creek AER upper headset assembly.

First look: 2011 Cannondale CAAD10 and SuperX

Tour tech: SRAM delivers special Red LTE groups

Claimed weight for a bare 56cm frame is now down to just 815g for the lightest 'nude' paint scheme, bringing Trek well in line with carbon superbikes from other manufacturers.

Trek says the new model makes no sacrifices in overall rigidity or durability however, thanks to a new HexSL carbon fibre that's said to be 10 percent stiffer and stronger than the standard OCLV Red blend.

Consequently, engineers were able to design the SSL with fewer carbon plies, which also imparts a slightly different ride quality while rolling down the road but virtually identical test bench numbers (90Nm/degree at the head tube, according to Trek).

Externally, the new SSL is visually identical to the standard 6 Series, using the same molds and Near Net Molding, StepJoint, asymmetrical steerer, DuoTrap, and BB90 technologies. Likewise, fit and geometry will generally remain the same (more on this later) so current Madone owners who choose to upgrade will be treated to the same dialed-in handling and feel.

Trek will offer the new SSL in two range-topping complete bike models that will replace last year's Madone 6.9 and 6.5 as well as a bare fuselage (frame, fork, headset, seatmast cap). The flagship Madone 6.9 SSL with come with Shimano Dura-Ace 7900 and Bontrager Race XXX Lite carbon clinchers while the second-tier 6.7 SSL will swap in more conventional Race X Lite aluminum wheels.

As before, though, all 6 Series Madone models are also available in Trek's Project One custom program, which allows buyers to choose frame geometry and paint, component models and sizing, and even component colors in many cases. New for '11 are tubular Bontrager wheel options (with color options extended to the top-end models) as well as Shimano Dura-Ace and Ultegra wheel models.

Trek also acknowledged that Project One lead times last year were longer than anticipated with some customers waiting more than 30 days to receive their orders but additional staff should bring that delay down to a more 2-3 weeks.

6 Series technology trickles down to mid-range 5 Series for 2011

Trek's bread-and-butter Madone 5 Series range gets a complete overhaul for 2011, inheriting the same external shaping and most of the features of last year's 6 Series models.

Key changes include the cleaner internal cable routing - with a trick Dura-Ace Di2 option - the optional DuoTrap integrated wireless speed and cadence sensor integrated into the non-driveside chain stay and updated round-profile seatmast cap.

As a result, the 2011 5 Series will drop 150g on average relative to 2010 frames while also getting a 15 percent bump in stiffness.

The StepJoint tube joining technology and asymmetrical steerer tube will remain exclusive to the 6 Series, though, and the 2011 5 Series will also change to Trek's TCT carbon process, meaning that production will also shift from Waterloo, Wisconsin to Asia.

As a result, 5 Series Madones will no longer be offered with Project One options, while last year's 4 Series Madone frame will carry into 2011 unchanged aside from updated paint, graphics, and build kits.

Updated fit options

As before, Trek will offer the entire Madone range in a broad selection of sizes and fit options but with one additional geometry and new naming schemes across the board to eliminate some of the emotional baggage that occasionally accompanied the old monikers - worth noting is that the most upright Project One 6 Series Madone will no longer include a clearcoated 'WSD' decal.

Last year's 'Pro' fit is now called 'H1' and features the shortest head tubes of the range while the 'Performance' fit is again 3cm taller at the head tube. will be available throughout the Madone family.

New for '11 is an 'H3' variant, though, which is similar to last year's WSD geometry but with even slighter shorter reach (by nearly a centimeter) and even taller stack (by 1-5-2cm) than before. Unlike WSD, H3 will be available in a full size spread from 50cm all the way up to 62cm.

2011 bikes that were formerly badged 'WSD' and use the same frame molds as last year will carry over the same geometry but all Trek bikes will eventually transition to the H1-3 scheme as older models are phased out.

Trek will offer the highest-end SSL Madone models exclusively in H1 and H2 fits but standard 6 Series Madones will be available in H1, H2 or H3. Other Madone models will be offered in H2, H3 or WSD fits depending on the model but not in H1.

About those steerer tubes...

We also took the opportunity to ask Trek road and triathlon product manager Tyler Pilger about the recent attention surrounding the company's carbon fibre steerer tubes.

According to Pilger, there is no recall in place for current models though Trek does prescribe fairly stringent guidelines in regards to stem model and clamp torques, saying stems with overly aggressive extension cut-outs and excessive torque can generate too much point stress but properly designed models, bolt tightening, and spacer placement should create no problems.

Even so, Pilger admits that 2011 Madone carbon steerer tubes will feature additional fibre plies in stem clamp areas to better tolerate out-of-spec stems and clamp torques just in case, and weight penalties are said to only be about 15g.

Summary of prices and brief specs for the 2011 Madone line are as follows:

I know right! My prediction is coming true! OCLV 55 will be used in the lower end bikes and I no longer will ahve to drop 3K on a frame not to mention Bontrager coming out with 3 sets of new carbon clinchers whhhaaa hooooo0! One year after the SSLs release they are selling for 4K for full bikes on ebay. What a frign bargain =) Sub 900 gram fame on the 6.9 is unbelievable! My 52cm will be like 850 grams!

Bontrager carbon clinchers When are those 3 new sets of Bontrager carbon clinchers coming out? Any details on them?

yes sir - They will have the 60mm deep clinchers in around 1700 grams; 50mm deep clinchers in around 145--1500grams; and then the low profil at 1340grams which may have a new hub - all carbon all clinchers with sexy graphics. Should be noted that the fairing on the deep dish clinchers are fairly fragile compared to say Zipps but that isnt saying much since the Zipp clinchers are tougher than the Zipp tubulars by ALOT but the reverse is true on Bontragers end. The low profile XXX are tough indeed and very well built but only with a one year warr. I would expect though Bontrager service to be equal to Zipp

Good points there acid. I seem to have very odd body proportions as I have a 120mm, 10 degree flipped down stem with zero spacers on my Trek. You really have to watch the TT length when buying a Trek. Also, the STA is tricky to measure because the seat tube extends slightly in front of the BB. I think the seat tube position gives these bikes their characteristic smoothness, though. I really hope that the new 6.9 frame is stiffer than current offerings, especially the BB area.

madone 6.9 Ad on OLN There was an ad on OLN at 9:14pm during tonights coverage "brought to you by the Madone 6.9". The ad features 3 Pyrenees mountain stage highlites starring Lance. After the video of Lance just crushing the mountains on those 3 stages, the 6.9 appears and the voice overlay says "brought to you by Trek bicycles new Madone SSL 6.9. Sub 900 gram OCLV carbon frame equipped with Bontrager wheelworks and components." I went to the Trek site, but didn't see anything mentioned. I guess it will be available soon?

dont count on it before late fall. Besides buying a Trek new these days is like buying a car new form the dealer. You get hosed. As some as you spin off the lot its worth 2-3 thousand dollars less. Find it on ebay in 6 months over the winter for 40% off 5.9SSL 2006 on ebay for 4500$ not to mention production at Trek is fairly slow these days

acid_rider said: Lance had a lot of spacers for a pro-rider, looks like 20mm at least. Never stopped him. 8^) Trek Madone and their 5000-series (and other road bikes they make?) have odd tube lengths, they have short seat tubes and short head tubes and long top tubes. This often results in either a short-ish stem or larger frame or a regular/long-ish stem and a lot of spacers. Unless you have short legs and long upper body and long arms, of course. Given pro-riders typically pick the smallest frame they can fit on they end up with long stems and more spacers than other brands they might ride. Lance used a regular 110mm stem (at least last year he did) on 58cm Madone and what looked like from a photo ~20mm or 25mm of spacers and -5 degree stem. I am sure this made him slooooow 8^). I think if he stayed on (given this years doping scandal) he would have won #8 due to lack of competition. But I digress. Very high percentage of Madone and 5000-series riders I see on the roads have both a lot of spacers and flipped up stems. Myself included! Looks goofy. I have 30mm of spacers and a zero-degree 100mm stem on my 54cm Madone. It does look rather odd but does not seem to slow me (or anyone else) down! Anyone seen Floyd Landis on prologue this year? Aero-Bars much higher than anyone else and he still did ok in ~top 5. I think being "low" is over-rated on flat and hilly roads. Being narrow is more important for aero-dynamics riding at ~50kmh (~25-30mph) and under. Being comfortable is the key. Click to expand...

I don't plan on buying one. I was just passing along some info. It is a nice looking rig though. I am plenty happy with my '05 5.9.

I've bought plenty of Treks off ebay with great luck although I know there are some real scams. I got jacked on an Easton bar last year and some fool bought a pair of carbon wheels from me with his CC and called me up to get his money back since he was out of work. We worked it out fine though

I just read this book on lance armstrong, one line it said he didn't like the madone, also there was a construction error on on of his bikes (wrong size fork installed), plus there was hincapie's fork crash. if trek can't even build their bikes correctly for the pros, I wouldn't feel comfortable buying it. and like Mosovich says, their head tube length is weird, and price is high.

WhiskeyNovember said: One (or even several) examples of build errors on team bikes is hardly indicative of the overall build quality of Trek bicycles. In what way is the head tube length "wierd"? If someone wants a taller head tube, several models of Pilot road bikes are available. As for price, value is relative, but I have yet to find US-built carbon bikes for less money than OCLV bikes....and yes, OCLV carbon is generally more refined than Asian-sourced carbon. Trek Madone 6.9 SSL – RadioShack-Nissan-Trek's 2012 race bike

Stealthy, understated look for new team's first season

Daniel Benson/Cyclingnews

James Huang

trek madone leopard 6.9 ssl

Trek Bicycle Corporation sponsored both Leopard Trek and RadioShack-Nissan last year so it was no surprise when the two teams merged during the off-season to learn that the Wisconsin company would carry on in that role for 2012.

Returning Leopard Trek riders shouldn't have to make any adjustments, as aside from cosmetics, virtually every piece of equipment is carried over from the 2011 season. Anchoring the entire package is Trek's top-end Madone 6.9 SSL frame, dressed in a complete Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 electronic group.

Team bikes also feature a wide array of components from the company's parts and accessories arm, Bontrager, including the new Aeolus wide-profile carbon tubular wheels, handlebars, stems, saddles, and even bar tape. Bontrager also supply the computers, with DuoTrap integrated cadence and speed sensors.

Finishing bits include Schwalbe tires, Cane Creek headsets and Trek BAT bottle cages. The latter is a curious choice in terms of cost – it's one of Trek's least expensive options – but one that makes more sense when you consider the reasonable weight and very secure grip.

Team leader Andy Schleck's bike looks to be largely unchanged from when we profiled it during last year's Tour de France in terms of both the build and positioning. We didn't have a chance to put team bikes on the scales during the 2012 media presentation but we expect weight to be just barely UCI-legal at around 6.86kg.

As before, Trek will offer team replica bikes to the public via their Project One program. Suggested retail price (sans pedals) is US$11,686.48. Check out our image gallery for lots more photos of the team Madones.

Shimano's Dura-Ace Di2 electronic group got a slow start in the pro peloton but has now almost completely supplanted the mechanical version at the top levels of the sport
