Capital One Auto Finance Names New President

October 16, 2012 • by Staff • Bookmark +

MCLEAN, Va. — Capital One Auto Finance (COAF) has a new president, the company announced today in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

According to the filing, Kevin Borgmann, COAF’s current president, was promoted to deputy chief risk officer with the departure of Peter Schnall, who is expected to vacate his position on June 1, 2013. Schnall, according to the filing, has agreed to remain with the company in a senior advisory role through April 1, 2014.

“Mr. Schnall’s responsibilities through the remainder of his tenure as chief risk officer will include working closely with Mr. Borgmann on a smooth and effective transition,” read the filing. “Mr. Schnall has agreed to remain with the company in a senior advisory role through April 1, 2014, at his current compensation and benefit levels until his departure.”

Schnall will continue to receive payments for the first two years following his departure, and his non-competition agreement provides payments totaling $5.3 million for an additional three years, according to the SEC filing.

Borgmann will assume his new role on Nov. 1. Replacing him as president of COAF is Sheldon F. “Trip” Hall,” who has been with the company since 1998. He currently serves as senior vice president for COAF.

Capital One names new chief risk officer, general counsel

Capital One Financial in McLean, Va., announced Tuesday a shuffling in its executive ranks.

Sheldon Hall, 41, will become chief risk officer on Aug. 1, the company said in a regulatory filing. Hall, who has been with the credit card giant for two decades, currently leads part of Capital One’s U.S. card business.

The firm’s current chief risk officer, Kevin Borgmann, will move into a new role as a senior adviser to CEO Richard Fairbank and other executives. The company’s plan is for Borgmann, who has been Capital One’s chief risk officer since 2013, to move into his new role on Feb. 1.

Capital One branch

That leaves a six-month gap, and during that period, the chief risk officer job will be filled by John Finneran Jr., who is currently Capital One’s general counsel, the company stated.

Following his stint as chief risk officer, Finneran will also become a senior adviser to Fairbank and other Capital One executives. Meanwhile, the general counsel role will be filled by Matthew Cooper, who joined Capital One in 2009 and has held various senior roles in the company’s legal department.

Capital One said that the decision to name a new chief risk officer was made at Borgmann’s request and is unrelated to either the firm’s financial performance or its risk performance.

“The company has been fully satisfied with Mr. Borgmann’s performance as chief risk officer,” Capital One said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Capital One, which had $361 billion of assets on Sept. 30, is scheduled to report its fourth-quarter earnings on Jan. 23.

“This was not merely a show; it was a happening, a love fest, a sing-along, and a trip down penny lane.” – ( Examiner.com)

“More than just an incredible simulation…the swelling strings and soaring french horn lines gave the live performance a high goose-bump quotient…the crowd stood and bellowed for more.” – ( The Los Angeles Times)

Is travel insurance worth it?

April 30, 2024 | 2 min read

Planning a trip and wondering if you need a travel insurance policy? Keep reading to learn more about travel insurance to decide whether it’s right for you.

Key takeaways

  • Travel insurance can provide financial protection if things go wrong before or during a trip.
  • You might get travel insurance to cover potential losses from trip cancellations or delays, lost baggage or medical issues.
  • Factoring in details specific to your trip and balancing with existing coverage might help you decide whether travel insurance is right for you.

What does travel insurance do?

Travel insurance is a type of specialized protection that might help protect against financial losses from airline delays, medical issues or other unexpected occurrences. Some travel insurance plans focus on specific things, like lost baggage or health care. Others offer a wide range of benefits under a single plan. It’s a good idea to make sure you understand the terms and conditions, because coverage varies.

When might travel insurance be beneficial?

Some of the situations where it can help to have travel insurance include:

Interruptions and cancellations

Trip delay insurance covers food and lodging expenses if you experience an airline delay. Trip cancellation insurance can reimburse your prepaid costs if an illness forces you to cancel entirely.

Baggage issues

Baggage loss coverage can reimburse you if your luggage is lost, stolen, damaged or delayed.

Medical emergencies

Travel health or medical insurance can cover everything from medication to emergency medical evacuation if you become sick or injured when traveling abroad .

When might travel insurance be unnecessary?

There’s no right or wrong time for travel insurance. It depends on your circumstances. But when deciding whether travel insurance is worth it, you can consider things like:

  • Type and length of trip: If the trip’s refundable, you might not need extra protection. And a short or cheap trip might not be worth the cost of coverage.
  • Your existing coverage: Check existing policies and agreements. If you have coverage through your health insurance provider, credit card issuer or card network, you may not need more.

Considering travel insurance in a nutshell

Travel insurance can offer peace of mind if anything goes wrong before or during a trip. But it may not always be worth it. If you’re considering travel insurance coverage, looking at your situation, your trip and the terms and conditions of your existing insurance policies could help you determine whether the benefits outweigh the costs.

  • Government House;
  • Expocentre Exhibition Complex;
  • and other famous sights.

You will learn about the different epochs of the city from the foundation in 1147 till Soviet times of 20 th  century.

Moscow River

Moskva river has the form of a snake and is the main waterway of Moscow, consisting of a cascade of reservoirs. Within the city, Moskva river is 80 km long, 120 m - 200 m wide and up to 14 m deep. The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south.

Bridges in Moscow

Undoubtedly, bridges and embankments are among the most scenic spots and main attractions of Moscow. Plus, they are so romantic.

  • Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge –  Great Stone Bridge –  is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.
  • Patriarshy Bridge  is one of the youngest pedestrian bridges, built in 2004. The bridge connects the iconic Christ the Saviour Cathedral with funky Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's New Year speech to the nation.
  • Borodinsky Bridge,  erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
  • Bagration Bridge  one of the  pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
  • Krymsky Bridge  used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th  century.

Embankments of Moscow

Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from  Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.

  • Pushkinkaya embankment  is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Zeleny theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.
  • Vorobyevskaya embankment  is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
  • Embankment in Kolomenskoye  Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.
  • Taras Shevchenko embankment  is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.
  • Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. In addition, almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park

Moscow river boat trip starts from the pier Klenovy (Maple) Boulevard and provides reat views of Nicholas Perervinsky monastery.

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.

Take a break from the big city hustle in the shady parks and gardens of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve. Don’t miss a wonderful Church of the Ascension and Tsar Alexey’s Palace in Kolomenskoye!

Monasteries and temples

  • Novospassky Monastery
  • Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
  • Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
  • Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
  • Cathedral of Christ the Savior
  • The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
  • The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
  • Novodevichy Convent
  • The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
  • St. Andrew’s church  (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
  • St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.

Best Area of Boston to Stay In (7 Options)

I definitely recommend that families make at least one trip to my home state of Massachusetts and our lovely capital city of Boston. There is so much to do in Boston with kids – including museums, historic attractions, and of course, Fenway Park. It’s got so much history but is also a beautiful city with delicious restaurants, fun shops, and great museums.

If you are planning a trip to Boston, you may be wondering what neighborhoods to stay in around Boston. There are so many options depending on what you plan to do on your trip. Here are my thoughts on the best area of Boston to stay in.

I have stayed in a few hotels in Boston over the years at no cost for review. All opinions are my own. This post contains affiliate links and a purchase/click through one of these links may result in a commission paid to us at no cost to you.

Best Area of Boston to Stay In (Best Boston Neighborhoods)

The seaport district.

The Seaport District is one of Boston’s newest neighborhoods, and so it’s constantly evolving. My son and I stayed at the Element Boston Hotel a few months ago for a complimentary stay and loved the amount of space we had in our room. Families may find more affordable accommodations in the Seaport, and as a bonus, it’s located near the Boston Children’s Museum.

Keep in mind, however, that you’ll need to take cabs to get around the rest of the city, however, since there isn’t much in the way of public transportation in the area. It’s an area that is constantly changing and there are new hotels and restaurants constantly popping up.

If you are taking a cruise out of the Flynn Cruiseport Terminal in Boston, this may be a nice place to stay before or after your cruise. While it won’t necessarily be within walking distance of your hotel, it is pretty close.

Popular hotels in this area include the Westin Seaport , the Seaport Hotel , and the Element Boston .

Cambridge isn’t technically Boston, but it’s located right over the Charles River. There are plenty of great restaurants and shops in the various Cambridge neighborhoods, but it’s definitely less touristy than other areas in and around Boston.

Be sure to visit Harvard University during your Boston family vacation. The Boston Museum of Science is also located right nearby. Even if you stay in Boston, not Cambridge, it’s worth visiting for a day.

It’s so close to Boston, but it’s also got such a different feel. Public transportation on the MBTA red line easily will get you from Boston to Cambridge (and back) so it’s very convenient to visit for the day.

Popular hotels include the Charles Hotel and the Kimpton Marlowe .

Faneuil Hall/North End

Faneuil Hall is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Boston, although the whole area (including Quincy Market) does tend to resemble a shopping mall. Bordered by the Boston waterfront, the Financial District, and the North End (the Italian neighborhood of Boston), it can be one of the best areas to stay in around Boston.

It’s such a central location, making it very convenient. We loved our stay at the Bostonian Hotel, which is within walking distance of many Boston tourist attractions and historic sites, including the Paul Revere House and the Old North Church. In addition, public transportation is easily accessible in this area.

Also near Faneuil Hall and the North End is the Boston waterfront, where you’ll find some popular waterfront hotels like the Boston Harbor Hotel and the Marriott Long Wharf . In the summer, this can be an absolutely beautiful spot to stay in, and it’s convenient to the New England Aquarium and the ferry terminal for the Boston Harbor Islands.

Faneuil Hall is close to both Boston’s North Station and South Station, so if you are coming in by train, it will be a short ride by cab or rideshare. Guests staying in this area will probably find that they won’t need a car for most places they visit because public transportation is a good option.

Even if you aren’t staying in this neighborhood, we definitely recommend that you visit Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market. They are popular, iconic parts of the city.

The Financial District

The Financial District of Boston is a small area of downtown Boston that is lively during the week and quieter on the weekends. Unless you are specifically planning to visit a business in the area, we don’t recommend staying there. While it is a nice environment, you’ll probably find that most of the cafes and shops in the area are only open during working hours, and have limited weekend hours. Other areas of the city mentioned here are more popular tourist destinations and will have more things to do while you are visiting.

Back Bay/Copley

The Back Bay and Copley area are located near a variety of hotels, thanks to the tourists generated by Copley Plaza, Copley Square, Hynes Convention Center, the Boston Public Library, the Boston Public Garden, and Newbury Street. This is a very popular area of the city.

It’s so convenient to public transportation, so you can easily take the T to just about anywhere you’ll want to go. It’s also located along Boylston Street, which is one of the busier roads in Boston and is where the Boston Marathon ends. If you want to be in the center of town, the Back Bay neighborhood is definitely a great option. It’s one of the best neighborhoods in Boston.

This area contains some great luxury and high-end hotels, including the Westin Copley Place , Fairmont Copley Plaza , and the Newbury Hotel . It’s a nice area to walk around and also includes many fantastic restaurants and shops. If you are taking the train, Boston’s Back Bay Station is located in this neighborhood.

The Theater District/Boston Common

Right near the Back Bay/Copley area is the Theater District and adjacent Boston Common/Boston Public Garden. Named for the number of theaters in the area, this is a great place to stay if you want easy access to the Boston Public Garden as well as all of the wonderful live theaters we have in the city.

This area is also near Tufts Medical Center and borders the Chinatown neighborhood. The area surrounding the Boston Common is home to many of the most luxurious hotels in the city, including the Four Seasons Boston and the Ritz-Carlton Boston .

We’d definitely recommend staying on this side of the neighborhood (rather than the theater district), which is also fairly close to the Massachusetts State House, part of the Freedom Trail, Beacon Hill, Charles Street, and the original Cheers bar. You can walk around the area easily and can also take public transportation conveniently located in the area.

Do you have baseball fans in your family? The Fenway neighborhood, which is also located near Boston University, is located right near Fenway Park, which is right in the heart of the city. It’s also not too far from other attractions including the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Northeastern University, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and Wentworth University.

The Fenway/Kenmore Square area is also near the Back Bay, Newbury Street, and the new Time Out Boston Market and is located on public transportation. It’s become a popular part of the city, but isn’t quite as central as the Back Bay area.

Neighboring Suburbs

Some families find that it’s much less expensive to stay in the local suburbs, rather than right in the city. Some options include Natick (home to the Natick Mall – the largest mall in New England), Waltham, Burlington, and Newton. Another hotspot is Somerville, MA, where you’ll be near the Legoland Discovery Center.

These towns/cities may have some public transportation options, but they are definitely less convenient than the city hotels. However, they can definitely be a great option if you are on a budget. I would definitely recommend having a car if you do stay in a suburb.

Getting to Boston For Your Vacation

Boston is a very convenient city to visit, whether you are driving, taking the train, or flying. If you do drive, you may choose to park your car at the hotel and take public transportation around as you sightsee. Parking at some of the more popular attractions can be expensive and tough to find. It’s usually easier to walk or take the T (which is not too difficult to navigate).

Planning on flying? Boston’s Logan International Airport isn’t too far from downtown Boston. While you can definitely rent a car at the airport ( see prices here ), you may not need one, unless you plan to drive beyond the city.

There are also three train stations in Boston. While all offer commuter rail trains to various suburbs, they all also have Amtrak service. North Station, near the Boston Garden, offers the Downeaster, which has service to Maine. South Station and Back Bay station offer the Acela and the Northeast Corridor regional, with service to major Northeast destinations including NYC, Philadelphia, and Washington DC.

Frequently Asked Questions About Boston

It does get cold in the winter, so we recommend visiting in the spring, summer, or fall when it’s more pleasant to walk around the city.

There are lots of great fun family activities in Boston. We especially recommend visiting the Boston Children’s Museum with young children.

Absolutely, and we recommend traveling beyond our capital. Cape Cod is especially popular in the summer months.
