Don’t Miss These 21 Types of Entertainment on Cruise Ships (Free, Paid & More)

If you are taking a cruise you may be wondering what there is to do when onboard. Cruise ship entertainment varies a lot by cruise line but some common types are found on many ships.

In this post, we will explore what you are likely to do with your time onboard as well as some hints and tips to make sure that you don’t miss out.

Daily Schedule / Cruise Ship App

Most cruise lines deliver a paper daily schedule to your cabin every evening.

This will tell you what is going on the next day, and where .

Costa cruises app

You can get the same information on your phone by using the cruise line App.

Make sure you check out the schedule, so you can see any entertainment that interests you – remember you might have to book theatre shows in advance on larger ships.

You don’t need to buy the ship’s WiFi to use the App, find out why here:

You Don’t Need to Pay For Wi-Fi To Use a Cruise Line App – Here’s Why

Theatre Shows

Large cruise ships all have purpose-built theatres, and most put on two shows a night to give the guests dining at different times the opportunity to see the show.

Smaller ships, like the Azamara Fleet that don’t have purpose-built theatres will put their shows on in the biggest lounge onboard,

If you sail on Norwegian Cruiseline or Royal Caribbean ships you may get the opportunity to see Broadway-style shows, like Hairspray or Mama Mia.

If you cruise with MSC , their shows have to be tailored to suit an audience who speak multiple different languages.

Their shows tend to have singing, dancing and impressive costumes – but often no real story or theme.

On a traditional cruise line like Cunard, you might get classic concerts or operatic singing.

The shows are organised to suit the cruiselines target audience.

You May Have To Pre-Book Theatre Shows

On larger cruise ships you will have to prebook theatre seats. This can easily be done via the cruise ship’s App.

If you don’t want to use the App, sometimes ships have “Box Offices” where you can book the show, or you can go to Reception.

If you book via the App, you may be able to book shows before you even board the ship – so it is worth checking and downloading the App if possible.

MSC CRUISES THEATRE ENTERTAINMENT

I tend to book to see all the theatre shows as soon as I get onboard, via the App. I can always cancel if my plans change.

Magicians, Comedians, Jugglers And More

As well as theatre shows, there are often magicians, comedians and other entertainers like jugglers or acrobats.

These can normally be found in the theatre, or sometimes in the larger bars onboard.

On P&O’s Arvia, they have acrobatic shows that are held in the central atrium of the ship, which is a large area over many floors. The audience can watch the performers from the circular stair or from many levels.

types of entertainment on cruise ships

On Costa Smeralda, they have similar acrobatic shows in the Colosseum area – also in the central atrium area of the ship.

There was one major drawback to Colosseum shows though. Find out about that, in my full-ship review video here:

I really enjoy going to Trivia quizzes when I cruise. My family and I often take part, we all have different areas of knowledge.

Trivia can be on any number of subjects

  • Anything and everything!
  • Often with different genres – 1980’s, Motown, Rock ‘n’ Roll, 1960s etc
  • Name that landmark etc
  • Films/Movies
  • Harry Potter, Star Wars, Beatles etc
  • We tend to avoid these!

p&o iona trivia in pub

Sometimes you take part in the trivia by yourself or with your party, otherwise, you are invited to get into a larger team.

This is a great way of meeting new people and having some fun!

Prizes include bottles of prosecco, t-shirts, cruise line drinks, etc.

When I cruised to Asia on Spectrum of the Seas, I noticed that Trivia attracted the British, American, Canadian and Australian cruisers.

Cruises from Singapore, Hong Kong and other Asian countries seemed far more interested in Karaoke – something that I would never consider taking part in.

Find out about that interesting Asian Cruise here:

The bigger cruise ships often put on game shows in the theatre for example

  • Deal or No Deal
  • The Price is Right
  • Love and Marriage / Mr & Mrs
  • Wheel of Fortune

Princess cruise ships often have a show called “Voice of the Ocean” which is similar to “The Voice” TV programme. Passengers volunteer to sing and are then judged!

Many games are interactive, you have a box with buttons to press to cast your vote on various things.

When I sailed on Norwegian Prima , I found that you had to pay to play the game show “Deal or No Deal. “

You can buy your game card through the Norwegian App, and they pick people who have bought one to be contestants. If you aren’t picked, you can play along on your phone from your seat in the audience.

Prices include money, onboard credit, free photos, casino credit – and occasionally, free cruises.

types of entertainment on cruise ships

Karaoke is very popular on cruise ships – particularly in Asia, I have discovered.

As well as the normal type of Karaoke, where you choose the song you want to sing, some cruise lines – like Princess have “Karaoke Roulette” where you don’t get to choose. You are told what to sing, based on where the roulette wheel has stopped.

msc world europa karaoke bar

Roller Skating

I was able to go rollerskating onboard MSC’s World Europa.

You had to sign a waiver, and you were lent a helmet and roller skates.

It was free to do and wasn’t very busy.

types of entertainment on cruise ships

Other ships – like some Royal Caribbean ships – also have roller skating or rollerblading rinks.

Ice Skating

Many Royal Caribbean ships have Ice Skating rinks onboard.

You can ice skate free of charge at certain times of the day.

They also use these ice rinks to put on Ice skating shows, which are very impressive – considering they are on a moving ship, and the ice rinks tend to be far smaller than on land.

independence of the seas ice skating rink royal caribbean skaters dancers

Dance Classes

Many ships offer free dance classes – Line Dancing, Zumba, ballroom dancing – all sorts.

The more traditional cruise line Cunard, actually employs “Dance Hosts” so that you can try out the ballroom dancing skills you have learnt, even if you don’t have a partner. Dance Hosts will be available in the ballroom for you to dance with.

Whether you’re an absolute beginner or simply keen to perfect your steps you’ll love the opportunity to join the variety of dance classes on offer. Available on voyages of 7 nights or more, classes are lead by coupled instructors and include ballroom as well as Latin and line dance. And when evening falls, what better way to showcase your new moves than in the chandeliered grandeur of the Queens Room? Cunard

MSC regularly have dance classes held in various bars across their shipwide fleet. Lessons last about 30 minutes, and they teach you a dance to go with one particular song. Adults and children are all welcome to join in.

Movies/Films

Movies are often shown in the main theatre, in individual movie theatres, or on the top deck on large screens.

Princess cruise lines are famous for their “Movies under the stars” – they even serve free popcorn!

princess cruise line cruises cruise ship movies under the stars tv screen popcorn pool

There is often live music going on around the ship, in different bars.

Often there are singers, accompanied by one or more musicians.

Ships may have a “House Bnd.” On P&O’s fleet, they have a house band called Pulse, who’s members vary, but the generic name stays the same.

They often have themed nights, playing Motown, Rock ‘n’ Roll or hits from the 1980s.

Some of these bands are far better than others, it has to be said…

norwegian bliss Q venue country music

Tribute Acts

Many cruise ships have tribute acts – George Michael, The Beatles, U2, Neil Diamond, Dolly Parton – I also saw the “Take That” theatre show, on P&O’s Arvia.

The bands suit their audience – for example, Take That or Madness is suitable on a British Cruise Line, whereas The Beatles are suitable for cruise audiences the world over.

Pool Parties

Many cruse lines have pool parties on the top deck.

The adult only Virgin Voyages take Pool parties to a whole new level

As you approach the pool area, you’ll be struck by the dazzling red LED lighting and the giant inflatable octopus that seemingly reaches its arms around the entire space. The entire area transforms into an undersea fantasy land, creating a magical ambiance that’s perfect for letting loose. Virgin Voyages

They have a resident DJ to provide the music, and cruise ship dancers lead the dancing in and around the pool area.

types of entertainment on cruise ships

Silent Discos

Silent Disco’s are very popular on cruises.

Everyone is given a set of headphones and you can select a number of different channels to listen to different music – for example everyone with red on their headsets might be listening to Dancing Queen by Abba.

This is a great way for guests to enjoy themselves, without creating lots of noise that might disturb other guests elsewhere.

Themed Nights

A themed night on a cruise ship is where guests and staff dress up with a specific theme in mind.

Colour-themed nights are very popular – particularly White Night, which is held on many different cruise lines.

Find out all about themed nights here:

Theme Nights On Cruise Ships (Everything You Need to Know) – Examples

Local Entertainers

Some cruise lines, like Azamara or Princess bring local entertainers in from the ports of call.

We saw some amazing Japanese dancers when cruising with Princess Cruises in Asia.

When we cruised around the British Isles, they bought on guest speaker Pete Best – the original drummer of the Beatles, who was replaced by Ringo Starr in 1962. It was fascinating.

I have seen Spanish Flamenco Dancers, French Folk Dancing – all sorts.

Find out about the entertainment on the smaller ship Azamara Onward here:

Azamara Cruise Review – Food, Ship, Entertainment and More

I have seen all sorts of interesting lecturers on cruise ships.

They normally lecture in the main theatre, with a screen behind them to show slides.

Often the lectures are about the ports of call you are visiting, or just interesting subjects and people.

I have listened to talks about Concorde, The British Royal Family, and Aviation across history.

Some of my favourite lecturers are:

Find out about that amazing cruise here:

When I cruised on P&O’s Arvia they had a new guest lecturer who was supposed to be speaking about the ports of call we were visiting.

Unfortunately, we never got to see her speak, as she would turn up for the early morning lecture, but by the time we arrived for the second lecture of the day, she had begun to feel seasick!

I never felt seasick at all, so she must have been very sensitive to the movement of the ship. I hope she eventually found her “sea legs!”

Some cruise lines replay the lectures on the TV, so you can watch them from the comfort of your own cabin. P&O don’t do this though, so I never saw any of the lectures.

Zip Lines / Flowrider And Other Paid Extras

Some cruise ships have Zip lines, FlowRider surf simulators, Go-kart tracks, and Laser Quest – all are available at an additional charge.

When I sailed onboard Norwegian Prima , I tried the Go Karts.

Instead of having tracks over two decks like other Norwegian ships, the  Norwegian Prima ’s 1,400-foot go-kart track is spread over the ship’s top three decks

See how I got on with that here:

Ropes Courses

Some of the newer MSC ships have ropes courses, that are completely free to use. P&O have similar, smaller ropes courses, but they make a charge.

If you did a similar thing on land in the UK, it would cost you upwards of £18 / $22!

To find out about other free things that MSC offers , read this post next

12 Free Things You Have to Try on MSC Cruises (Tried and Tested!)

msc meraviglia ropes course and waterslides

Slides and Waterparks

Lots of ships have free slides and water parks on the top deck that can keep both adults and children amused for hours.

These are free of charge, although you might have to sign a waiver before you use them.

types of entertainment on cruise ships

The Ultimate Abyss slide on Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas is over ten decks high.

The Venom drop slide on MSC World Europa is over eleven decks – but I found it to be far slower and less scary than the Royal Caribbean version.

Movies and TV Shows

Cruise ships also offer guests the opportunity to catch up on their favorite movies and TV shows. Many ships have movie theaters on board, where guests can watch the latest releases and classics alike. Some ships also offer outdoor movie screenings under the stars. The entertainment on board our fleet is just as revolutionary and carefully crafted as the ships themselves. In fact, we’re changing the future of entertainment at sea—or anywhere else. We believe entertainment should happen 24/7. It should be fresh and unpredictable, surrounding you and delighting you with spaces and experiences never seen before.

Captivating main stage productions leave you talking long after the roar of applause and final bow. Like Feel the Funk, a funky, exciting, and fashionably nostalgic with a modern twist. Or On Broadway, a spectacular musical production that combines the biggest Broadway classics.

Camp at Sea

Welcome to the first and only fully customizable Camp at Sea program. Our schedule of activities changes on every sailing based on the interests of our junior cruisers. We’ve created four fun-filled categories of interest—Art, Recreation, Culinary, and S.T.E.M., and have designed more than 500 activities overall. With such a wealth of programming to work with, our Youth Counselors design daily programming that keeps everyone entertained, engaged, and wanting more. Our Camp at Sea program makes every sailing a brand new experience.

Discover unexpected and award-winning experiences and cruise ship entertainment at every turn, from live music performances that perfectly complement our ships' stunning spaces to unpredictable parties sure to excite all your senses.

Celebrity Activities

From morning until night, there are literally hundreds of different activities happening on a Celebrity cruise ship. The only question is, which ones are perfect for you?

Deal or No Deal

Play the world’s most popular TV game show where contestants play and deal for cash in a high-energy contest of nerves and raw intuition. Everyone in the audience gets to play along and could win up to $1,000. Purchase your entry card pre-cruise and receive 20% off.

* Terms and Conditions

To play, game fees apply and taxes apply. You must have an established folio account to play, must be twenty-one (21) years of age or older, and must be present to win. No limit on number of Deal or No Deal cards, and cards can only be used for the sailing for which they are purchased. Merchandise prizes are not transferable, have no cash value, and may not be used as credit towards the onboard folio account, and no substitution is allowed. Merchandise prizes expire at the conclusion of the voyage. Cash prizes will be automatically applied to your onboard account. Free play prize redeemable at Casino cage. Free cruise prize will be issued via a certificate redeemable available for one sailing up to seven (7) days in a veranda stateroom, for up to two (2) guests, on select sailings only, and does not include air, transfers, hotel, taxes, gratuities, or any other fees applicable to the cruise. Certificate can be redeemed by calling Celebrity Cruises Blue Chip Club at 866-461-7170 or by emailing [email protected]. Any refunds or voided sales must be made prior to the sailing or else they are considered active for that sailing.  We reserve the right to change terms & conditions of the game at any time without previous notice.

EXCITEMENT. ADVENTURE. RELAXATION. FUN.

Cruise Lines today are making waves in the world of cruising by amazing quality and quantity of entertainment. There are so many activities on offer everyday, that a day at sea can be at least as much fun and exhausting as a full day of sightseeing. From rock climbing wall to cooking classes, belly dancing to trivia contests, wine tasting to top-tier Broadway musicals, there is truly something for everyone.

Daytime Happenings

Take a dip in the pool, or just breath in the fresh ocean air reading your favorite book on your own balcony. Are you more up to going to the cinema? No problem! Some of the cruise lines even have a cinema on board, offering movies for adults as well as playing big kid favorites. You are serial shopper? Most cruise ships have a selection of shops on board, offering everything from perfumes to souvenirs, toys to the latest fashion of clothing. If your aim is more to venture into the different cuisines, with the selection of specialty restaurants, you will for sure find dishes that delight you. Cruise ships appeal to all type of guests by offering a wide range of programs and activities covering an array of interests. You can soak up the sun while being taken away by the rhythms of the drum band on the pool deck or participate in comedy shows, some cruise lines even have movie screens by the pool. With the newer and newer mega ships coming out, there is really no end to entertainment on board.

Daily Newsletter

Cruise Lines make it easy for you to follow all the happenings and scheduled activities on board by delivering a daily newsletter to your cabin every day for the next day, so you can plan ahead. This compass gives you all the information you need, from opening hours of different outlets to the timing of the daily theater shows, information on the upcoming ports to sunrise and sunset timings. If you signed up for kids’ club activities, your little one will get a daily newsletter about their happenings as well.

Fitness Center & Spa

Going on a cruise holiday doesn’t mean to stop your routine of exercise. There is a fully equipped fitness Center & Gym available on most of the ships, besides the jogging track up on the deck, providing you with an amazing backdrop to your activities. On newer ships, gyms are even multi-deck with floor to ceiling ocean views and state-of-the-art equipment. You just want to indulge in a massage? With those amazing spa facilities on board most of the ships, surely you will find what you are looking for. You feel like going for a new hair do? There is no better time!

What Type of Entertainment Is on a Cruise Ship?

By Robert Palmer

types of entertainment on cruise ships

Cruise ships offer a variety of entertainment options for their passengers. From the latest in Broadway-style shows to family-friendly activities, there is something for everyone to enjoy. For those looking to relax, there are spas and salons, as well as casinos and lounges. Those looking for a more active experience can take part in rock climbing walls, waterslides, miniature golf courses, and even zip lines.

For those who want to take in the sights while on board, many cruise ships feature observation decks where passengers can enjoy the view. Some ships even offer the opportunity to view a movie under the stars at an outdoor theater or watch live performances from talented musicians and performers.

For those who like to spend time with their friends or family members, there are plenty of activities available on a cruise ship. There are often themed nights that feature special music and other entertainment options such as karaoke and trivia competitions. There are also plenty of opportunities for socializing with other passengers at cocktail hours and dance parties.

Activities for Kids and Teens:

Cruise ships are also great for kids and teens who want something to do during their vacation. There are usually supervised programs designed specifically for them such as scavenger hunts, video game tournaments, arts & crafts classes, sports clinics, and more. What Entertainment Is There On board A Cruise?

17th August 2018

On a cruise ship, entertainment is always guaranteed. Whether it’s for the kids, strictly adults-only or something the whole family can enjoy, there’s always going to be plenty of options to keep everyone happy. On the biggest ones, it’s part and parcel of any cruise line’s offering, up there with lively swimming areas and incredible onboard restaurants.

During your time at sea, you’ll be treated to live theatre, sports, games, music and stand-up comedy whether it’s day or night. In fact, there’s so much to choose from that, even on a 14-day jaunt, you won’t find yourself short on shows and productions to watch.

But no two cruise lines’ entertainment options are the same. And their programs read more like the listings of upcoming Broadway shows compared to what you might be picturing, putting on cruise line-exclusive productions to set themselves apart from each other.

But who offers what? To help you out, we’ve compiled exactly what you can expect entertainment-wise from each of the major cruise line operators below. Be warned: things are about to start getting exciting!

Royal Caribbean Cruises

Anthem of the Seas Ice Skating

Touting itself as having the greatest shows at sea, the line might well be onto something. For one, they’re the only cruise line offering Tony Award-winning Broadway musicals as part of their line-up. But what else is waiting in the wings? Guests can expect to be wowed by original productions, ice skating shows and Aqua Theatre – a combination of high-wire and high drama!

But we know you want to hear more about those Tony Award-winning musicals, right? The  following shows exclusive to these ships:

  • Mamma Mia on Allure of the Seas: The iconic smash hit – at sea for the first time – is a pop treat fit for dancing queens of any age. Who could say to ABBA while sailing between destinations?
  • Cats on Oasis of the Seas: Forget the film from a few years ago, this is the best way to experience Andrew Lloyd Webber’s legendary musical. It’s played in over 20 countries across 250 cities – and now it’s hitting the high seas.
  • Saturday Night Fever on Liberty of the Seas: Get your platforms at the ready, it’s time to strut your stuff. Indulge your inner Travolta with a take on the legendary seventies classic – polyester suit optional, of course!

Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises XBOX Lounge

Another award winner, Celebrity keep it strictly original, with a range of incredible productions created just for the line – and impossible to see anywhere else. Love your live music? Rockumentary brings incredible iconic performances from throughout the ages back to life. Maybe it’s something sensual you’re after? The adults-only Elyria might be for you. Expect temptation, excitement and more – you’ll just have to see for yourself.

As for ship-exclusives, here’s a taste of what else is instore:

  • iHollywood on Summit and Constellation: Experience the glamour of an Oscars Party, soundtracked by the biggest bops from your favourite movies, spanning the 30s right up until the present day.
  • Simply Ballroom on Millennium: Strictly who? No need to bring your own dancing shoes, just sit back and prepare to be amazed by classic ballroom dances through the ages.
  • Topper on Equinox and Eclipse: Like things on the whimsical side? Topper’s steampunk vibes and quirky adventures ticks that box, taking you on a tale of friendship, told from a giant mechanical hat.

Princess Cruises

Whatever your idea of a good time is, Princess’ ships are flush with entertainment options to match. All-ages productions, dance classes, stuff for the kids, top-deck film screenings, stand up sets, magic acts – you name it, Princess probably has it. You’ll can even try your hand at Deal or No Deal and belt out the classics on The Voice.

How about exclusives? Across their fleet, you can find:

  • Rock Opera on Sky Princess and Enchanted Princess: Spanning genres, languages (including American Sign Language) and wardrobes, this combo of fashion, sights and sounds is one that’ll delight all music lovers.
  • Spotlight Bar on Discovery Princess: Set to a soundtrack of modern classics, the regulars of the Spotlight Bar turn their favourite haunt into a dancefloor full of incredible moves. We’ll drink to that!
  • 5-SKIES on Sky Princess and Enchanted Princess: A video game come to life, 5-SKIES follows Gamer 1 as goes on a virtual reality-fuelled adventure across five increasingly tougher levels. The line’s most technologically advanced production!

All of its ships also feature a programme of Broadway-inspired shows, but its exclusive Carousel Productions at Sea shows take place on the following ships:

If it’s number ones you’re after, you’ll find them here, along with these ship-exclusive shows:

What Type Of Evening Entertainment Can I Expect On A Cruise Ship?

' src=

A large part of the cruise experience for many people is not the all you can eat buffet or the exotic ports of call but the evening entertainment. The entertainment you will get onboard the best cruise ships in the world rivals any nocturnal entertainment anywhere. Casinos, cabarets, theatre productions, acrobatic and circus shows, the list is almost endless. In fact, many people choose their cruise on the basis of the evening entertainment available.

, What Type Of Evening Entertainment Can I Expect On A Cruise Ship?

Of all the cruise lines that ply the seven seas,  Royal Caribbean cruises  are generally known to have the most diverse range of evening entertainment. A simple Google search will tell you all you need to know about their fabled entertainment programs and why they are quite rightly regarded as the kings of the cruise ship entertainment sector.

Types Of Evening Entertainment You Can Expect On A Cruise Ship

There are literally dozens of evening entertainment options onboard a cruise with more being added all the time. Please see below for a small selection of activities that are more or less present on every cruise ship.

  • Nightclub  – The ship’s nightclub is a firm favourite of both the young and young at heart cruisers who can boogie the night away until the early hours. Being a cruise ship, they are not bound by local licensing laws and theoretically can keep the music pumping and the drinks flowing until the Captain brings proceedings to a halt. It’s worth bearing in mind that a ship has its own very strict laws regarding behaviour so by all means, have a good time but keep it real!
  • Casino  – Most large cruise ships have a casino facility or run casino nights where you can have a flutter on the game of your choice. Only spend what you can afford to lose – losing the majority of your cruise spending money at the Craps tables on your first night is certainly not recommended!
  • Evening Film Showings  – Many cruise ships have a dedicated area where you can watch the latest releases on the big screen – simply look at the showings in advance, pick your film and away you go!
  • Cabaret and Comedy  – Cruise lines put on a number of shows to appeal to people of all ages. It should be noted that some of the themes and material may be only suitable for adults. This will be clearly stated in onboard publicity.
  • Late Night Suppers  – The ever-popular midnight feast for hungry cruisers is as popular now as it has always been and while not strictly termed as an ‘activity’ or ‘entertainment’, it certainly attracts the crowds!
  • Socializing  – Another activity that is very underrated is speaking to your fellow passengers! Don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation on the sun deck or the bar – you might make a friend for life!

If you are thinking about  booking a cruise holiday  and evening entertainment is important to you, be sure to do your research before you book. Good cruise deal sites will give you the name of the ship and the dates so you can independently research whether they have nocturnal events that you like.

  • Cruise ships: what entertainment is offered to passengers

Important: choosing the right cruise ship

Sport and wellness offers of the cruise ships, edutainment on board the cruise ships, entertainment in the evenings, children on cruise ships, a trip full of fun and memories.

Relax and escape from everyday life: For many people, a trip on a cruise ship is the fulfillment of long-cherished dreams. Cruises deliver great experiences at destinations and at sea.

Regal Princess leaves Fort Lauderdale

In order to find the "right" ship, it is advisable to make comparisons in the run-up to a cruise. Families in particular should know before the start of the trip whether the children traveling with them will be adequately cared for.

The equipment of the cruise ships is very different. However, some things are similar across all ships. A swimming pool is essential and every ship has at least a small fitness center. The range of sports offered by large cruise ships includes a great gym, jogging tracks, climbing walls, mini golf courses, ball courts and sports halls. Not to mention the lavish wellness offerings.

The cruise lines provide accommodation in stylish cabins and gastronomic experiences in their own interest. They want to see their guests again. – There are libraries on many ships. They are not always as big as those of the Queen Mary 2 , which includes several thousand books. Libraries are places of retreat. We find such suitable quiet zones on every ship.

Other offers are presentations, language or fencing courses. The latter is experienced on Cunard ships. If you prefer sports, you can opt for gymnastics, dance courses or yoga. As we can see, hardly any wishes remain unfulfilled during the cruise. Don't forget the shore excursions. Many of the excursions organized by ship or on your own will remain in your memory forever.

Evenings are reserved for onboard restaurants, bars and entertainment. Dinner in the service restaurants is often a very special experience for ship guests. Delicious food and first-class service are unforgettable. After that, a delicious drink is on the program and a conversation with the fellow travelers about the events of the last few hours. Not to forget the stage shows in the on-board theater: It is amazing what quality the performances of the show talents have. And it gets even better: From time to time, guest stars make a few appearances on board the ships.

Celebrity Equinox - Silhouette Dining Room

We also don't want to forget the casinos on the ships: large US and Italian ships impress with their sometimes huge on-board casinos. Table and slot games are available on almost every ship.

Casino of the MSC Preziosa

Children rarely get bored on cruise ships. In addition to the unusual stays on land, medium and large ships have separate play and fun areas for the little ones, the middle age group and teens. Well-trained specialists take exemplary care of the next generation. Little holidaymakers love the children's pool or one of the slides that large, modern ships are equipped with. Safety precautions are strictly observed in the closed children's clubs.

Anyone looking for a special holiday is making the right decision with a cruise. On ships, young and old experience unforgettable holiday experiences. As there are: Shore excursions in previously unknown regions, best gastronomic experiences, excellent entertainment or visits to the casino in the evening. Cruises are an educational and at the same time relaxing form of vacation.

What makes a cruise special? What separates a cruise brand from its competition? While a cruise liner’s destination might always be the main draw for potential customers, there’s nothing about the radiant Caribbean or the shimmering Mediterranean Sea that is exclusive to any one operator, or even the cruise industry in general. So what are the parameters by which customers choose to spend their hard-earned holiday money for the year?

Value for money is essential, of course. Food and facilities play a significant part. But for the big cruise operators, the range of onboard entertainment on offer has become a key differentiator. And as our home-based entertainment options have swelled over the last decade, so too have our expectations. After all, if we can access movies, music, TV, videogames and streamed live events from our living rooms with the flick of a wrist, why shouldn’t we expect a similar variety of diversions on a cruise break that might cost thousands of pounds?

Carnival UK’s head of entertainment Paul Wright is well-placed to comment on the evolution of cruise ship entertainment from the traditional pastimes and hokey talent shows of yesteryear to today’s bewildering range of amusements, large and small, including full-on Broadway musicals, stand-up comedy, celebrity appearances and state-of-the-art casinos and nightclubs. Wright, the lead co-ordinator of passenger leisure time for Carnival brands P&O Cruises and Cunard Line, discusses entertainment as a differentiator, maintaining relationships with performers and the progression of modern trends.

Chris Lo: How has the concept of onboard entertainment evolved in the cruise industry?

Paul Wright: The variety within the entertainment line-up has changed significantly. Accessibility of entertainment generally means expectations have risen for passengers around what should be offered in an entertainment line-up. We also have to ensure we are up-to-date with what’s happening in the entertainment business. Changes in the dining options, for example, can influence changes in entertainment; more freedom dining has meant that the theatre isn’t always the primary choice for passengers so we need to ensure that we have options available across multiple venues at the same time. This is much more of a focus than it was previously when planning the line-up, and a cruise holiday is much more accessible now so we have to be in a position to react quickly to our passenger tastes and what they tell us they like to see.

CL: What do today’s customers expect from a cruise entertainment package?

PW: Our passengers tell us they expect the same quality they can experience at home; entertainment on a cruise ship is no different from any other theatre or live entertainment space. Passengers expect to see variety in the line-up and maybe something new to them. Having venues that travel around the world can really help turn this into a reality as we work with many international agents and performers. There are differences between P&O Cruises and Cunard; for example Cunard carries international passengers so we look for entertainers who can cross language barriers whereas P&O Cruises passengers are predominantly British.

CL: Do you think entertainment is a key differentiating point when potential customers are deciding between cruise holidays?

From virtual balconies to real-time ocean viewing portholes, 360° sky-high viewing platforms and smart TV’s, we profile the very best cruise-tech.

PW: I think entertainment is becoming more of a differentiating point for customers; more and more want to know the line-up before they make the decision of which cruise to take. We have seen this with our Strictly Come Dancing cruises, Music Festivals At Sea and also when we have worked with artistes like Alfie Boe and James Taylor.

CL: Have you found it important to tap into public interest in celebrity through offerings like George Takei’s upcoming appearances on Cunard Line’s Queen Mary 2, or P&O’s ongoing Strictly Come Dancing-themed cruises?

PW: P&O Cruises and Cunard have been working with a wide range of celebrities from all over the world for a long time. It’s a unique opportunity to get up close with them on a ship. Due to the nature of what we do, they are mixing with the passengers the whole time they are on board. We’ve found with the increase in social networking making the experience easy and almost instant to share with family and friends, the fact we have celebrities on board has become much more of a talking point.

CL: When it comes to cruise entertainment, does bigger always mean better?

PW: It’s really important to make sure we have a balanced line-up so our passengers are given choice. With so many venues on each ship, all with different seating arrangements and technical capabilities, we plan each element of the line-up by venue and then take an overview of what the passenger can experience so we can see what’s on offer each day of the cruise. We have, for example, comedy shows which are predominantly one artiste and production shows which have up to 21 people in the same line-up.

CL: What goes into customising facilities like nightclubs and casinos for the cruise ship environment?

PW: Primarily when customising any onboard venue the overarching consideration is around what the passenger will experience in terms of what the venue will look like and what facilities will be made available. Secondly it’s how do we ensure we can support it from a shoreside perspective? When the ships are sailing they don’t have the benefit of being able to get someone out to them like land-based venues in the event of problems, so we try and make everything more robust when we are selecting furnishing, technical elements and then lastly any entertainment element we add into the experience.

CL: Do you keep a close eye on competitors’ entertainment packages to get an up-to-date view of what works and what doesn’t?

PW: We keep an eye on what’s happening generally in the entertainment business so we ensure we are following the trends for our passengers. We keep a close eye on what our passengers are telling us they like, which is our priority.

CL: In terms of attracting and retaining talent, is it important that performers and guest speakers enjoy their time onboard, as well as the passengers?

PW: It’s really important that all our entertainers feel comfortable with their surroundings as it’s integral to their performance. They rely on having a solid professional team to support their performance from the sound and light team to the musicians and cruise staff; [performers] might have just come aboard and they go into a sound check in a venue they have never seen before with a team of people they have never met. The back-of-house areas are as important as the on-stage performance that the passengers see.

CL: How much work goes into building and maintaining relationships with potential entertainment providers or partners?

PW: We try where possible to meet everyone face-to-face in order to build strong working relationships. The team regularly attends showcases, auditions and live performances. We visit industry events like PLASA [Professional Lighting and Sound Association], Leisure Industry Week and we also arrange auditions and visits to the ship with potential providers. It’s as important to maintain existing relationships as it is to find new ones. The industry moves quickly so it’s a vital part of what we do; we attend premiers in London, we are invited up and down the country to see everything from lighting design and choreography to comedy and production shows.

CL: Out of all the entertainment options you provide for P&O and Cunard Line customers, what excites you the most, personally?

PW: I really get excited when I take someone onboard and they see the ship for the first time, especially if it’s a new relationship we are trying to build. Cruise ships in general have better technical capabilities available as standard to an entertainer or producer than land-based venues and it’s generally at that point the creative ideas start to flow.

CL: How are you looking to expand Carnival UK’s entertainment line-up in the future? Is it still possible to innovate in such an established space?

PW: Innovations in the line-up are happening all the time. For example, with [new P&O cruise liner] Britannia joining us next March we have introduced LED technology into the theatre, and we have designed a multi-functional space on the top deck with sports through the day and in the evening it turns into an open-air entertainment space. We introduce new shows into the line-up on average every 18 months. Technology innovations in the way we can deliver entertainment means the experience for the passenger can look and feel very different to what they expect. As far as individual entertainers are concerned we are always looking for new acts to add into our existing line-up.

Cruise Ship Types and Classifications: A Comprehensive Guide

  • December 12, 2023 December 12, 2023

Cruise Ship Types and Classifications: Cruise ships have become a popular choice for vacationers around the world. These massive vessels offer a wide range of amenities and activities for passengers to enjoy while sailing the seas. However, not all cruise ships are created equal. There are different types and classifications of cruise ships that cater to different types of travelers.

One of the most common ways to classify cruise ships is by size . Mega cruise ships are the largest of their kind and can accommodate more than 5,000 passengers on board. These massive vessels offer a resort-like experience with a wide range of dining and entertainment options. On the other hand, smaller cruise ships can provide a more intimate experience for travelers who prefer a quieter and more relaxed atmosphere.

Another way to classify cruise ships is by their destination . Some cruise ships are designed for tropical destinations, while others are designed for colder climates. For example, an Alaskan cruise ship may have a different design and amenities compared to a Caribbean cruise ship. Additionally, some cruise ships are designed for river cruising, allowing passengers to explore inland waterways and smaller ports of call.

Cruise Ship Classifications

Cruise Ship Types

Cruise ships come in different sizes, passenger capacities, crew ratios, and destinations. Understanding the different classifications can help you choose the right ship for your needs.

Cruise ships are classified by their size, which is usually measured in gross tonnage (GT). The larger the ship, the more passengers and amenities it can accommodate. Small ships, on the other hand, are more intimate and can access ports that are off-limits to larger vessels. Here are some common size classifications:

  • Small ships: under 10,000 GT
  • Mid-sized ships: 10,000-50,000 GT
  • Large ships: 50,000-100,000 GT
  • Mega ships: over 100,000 GT

By Passenger Capacity

Cruise ships are also classified by their passenger capacity, which is the maximum number of people that can be accommodated onboard. The larger the ship, the more passengers it can carry. Here are some common classifications by passenger capacity:

  • Small ships: under 500 passengers
  • Mid-sized ships: 500-2,000 passengers
  • Large ships: 2,000-6,000 passengers
  • Mega ships: over 6,000 passengers

By Crew Ratio

Cruise ships are also classified by their crew ratio, which is the number of crew members per passenger. A higher crew ratio means better service and more personalized attention. Here are some common classifications by crew ratio:

  • Luxury ships: 1 crew member per 1-2 passengers
  • Premium ships: 1 crew member per 2-3 passengers
  • Mainstream ships: 1 crew member per 3-4 passengers

By Destination

Cruise ships are also classified by their destination. Some ships are designed for specific regions, such as the Caribbean, Alaska, or the Mediterranean. Others are designed for world cruises or transatlantic voyages. Here are some common classifications by destination:

  • Caribbean ships: designed for warm weather and beach destinations
  • Alaska ships: designed for cold weather and wildlife viewing
  • Mediterranean ships: designed for cultural and historical destinations
  • World cruise ships: designed for long voyages that visit multiple continents

Choosing the Right Cruise

Choosing the Right Cruise

When planning a cruise vacation, choosing the right cruise ship type can be a daunting task. With so many options available, it can be overwhelming to determine which cruise line and ship is the best fit for your travel style and preferences. In this section, we will explore some considerations for selecting a cruise, how to match the cruise type to your travel style, and the benefits of seasonal and thematic cruises.

Considerations for Selecting a Cruise

When selecting a cruise, it is important to consider factors such as the duration of the cruise, the destination, the type of ship, the onboard amenities, and the price. Some cruise lines cater to families with children, while others are geared towards adults. Some ships offer a more casual atmosphere, while others are more formal. The onboard amenities can vary greatly from ship to ship, so it is important to determine what is important to you.

Matching Cruise Type to Travel Style

Matching the cruise type to your travel style is essential for a successful cruise vacation. For example, if you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere, a river cruise may be a better fit than an ocean cruise. If you are interested in exploring a specific region or culture, a themed cruise may be the way to go. For those who enjoy adventure and exploration, an expedition cruise may be the perfect fit.

Seasonal and Thematic Cruises

Seasonal and thematic cruises can offer unique experiences that are not available on other types of cruises. For example, a Christmas market river cruise in Europe can provide a festive holiday experience, while a fall foliage cruise in New England can offer stunning autumn views. Themed cruises can range from culinary cruises to music cruises, and can be a great way to combine your interests with your vacation.

In conclusion, selecting the right cruise ship type is crucial for a successful cruise vacation. By considering factors such as your travel style, onboard amenities, and the type of cruise, you can ensure that your cruise experience is enjoyable and memorable.

FAQs About Cruise Ship Types and Classifications

What distinguishes a mega cruise ship from other types of cruise vessels.

Mega cruise ships are the largest type of cruise vessels, accommodating more than 5,000 passengers onboard. These ships are known for their massive size, luxurious amenities, and wide range of onboard activities. They typically offer multiple restaurants, swimming pools, fitness centers, theaters, and even ice rinks and rock climbing walls. Mega cruise ships are designed to provide passengers with a resort-like experience at sea.

How are cruise ships categorized by size and what are the main classes?

Cruise ships are categorized by size based on their gross tonnage (GT). The main classes of cruise ships are small, mid-sized, and large. Small ships have a GT of less than 25,000 and typically carry fewer than 500 passengers. Mid-sized ships have a GT between 25,000 and 70,000 and carry between 500 and 2,000 passengers. Large ships have a GT of over 70,000 and can carry up to 6,000 passengers.

What are the characteristics that define a premium cruise line compared to contemporary ones?

Premium cruise lines are known for their higher level of service, personalized attention, and luxurious amenities. These lines typically offer more spacious cabins, gourmet dining options, and upscale entertainment. They also tend to have a higher crew-to-passenger ratio, which means that passengers receive more individual attention. Contemporary cruise lines, on the other hand, are more budget-friendly and offer a more casual atmosphere with a wide range of onboard activities.

Can you explain the different levels of cruise ships and what amenities they typically offer?

Cruise ships are typically classified into three levels: budget, mainstream, and luxury. Budget cruises offer basic amenities and are designed for travelers on a tight budget. Mainstream cruises offer a wider range of amenities, including multiple dining options, swimming pools, and entertainment venues. Luxury cruises offer the highest level of service and amenities, including gourmet dining, butler service, and exclusive access to certain areas of the ship.

What types of cruises are specifically tailored for adults and what unique features do they provide?

Adult-only cruises are becoming increasingly popular, and many cruise lines now offer cruises that are specifically tailored for adults. These cruises typically offer a more sophisticated atmosphere, with upscale dining options, wine tastings, and spa services. They may also offer a range of activities that are geared toward adults, such as dance classes, mixology lessons, and art auctions.

types of entertainment on cruise ships

Coolest Cruise Ship Entertainment on Ships Big and Small

I t’s not a surprise that people seek out cruises because they seek entertainment during vacation. Thus, cruise ship entertainment is a significant factor in guest satisfaction and perhaps even why a person books a particular cruise over another.

You can embark on a cruise ship and go to many ports as you sail from destination to destination. Yet aboard a singular ship, you can be entertained in many ways, hopping from an entertainment venue onboard to one ride or another.

Whether bands, comedians, Broadway Shows , or rides – fascinating entertainment has become standard on big cruise lines. They have some of the most awe-inspiring entertainment anywhere, not just at sea! On smaller cruise ships, you can expect local entertainment onboard the ships in the evenings that bring the culture of the place you’re visiting to life.

Cruise Ship Entertainment on Big Ships

Theater on cruise ships.

Live performances are available in spades on cruise ships. Choose from Broadway shows, classical dance or additional productions created specifically for cruise ship audiences.

Broadway Shows on Cruise Ships

If you love musical theater, you’ll be pleased to know that cruise ships offer some of the best of Broadway at sea.

From Jersey Boys to Kinky Boots, to Hairspray, Footloose, and more, well-known shows can be enjoyed on cruise ships across the Royal Caribbean and the Norwegian Cruise Line brands.

Ballet at Sea

Celebrity Cruises has partnered with the American Ballet Theatre to offer performances abroad select ships, bringing classical dance to a broader audience.

Additional Theater on Cruise Ships

Though some shows shown on big cruise ships may not have officially been on Broadway, they’re nonetheless produced at such a level.

Original shows like Magic to Do on Princess cruises, created with famed Broadway superstar Stephen Schwartz, or Disney Crise Line’s Tangled: The Musical , wow audiences. Another Rose , on Virgin Voyages, is an unforgettable experience that combines a dinner party with acrobatics and a doomed love story.

Rides on Cruises

The bar keeps lifting for rides on cruise ships! It seems as time goes on and more ships come to market, who can do rides onboard cruise ships biggest and most creatively is always at stake. In addition, cruise lines outdo themselves – and each other – as technology advances.

Waterslides

Waterslides on steroids seem to be a must on any mega-ship. They may wrap around half a cruise ship deck, like Disney Cruise Line’s AquaMouse on the new ship, Disney Wish, or swirl from one deck down two or three decks below, like on Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas.

FlowRider Simulators

FlowRider simulates what it’s like to go surfing. But don’t worry about fish, coral, and other sea creatures because the current you ride is on water flowing above a manufactured blue “sea.” (You don’t even have to worry about duck-diving as surfers do in the ocean!)

Who says you need to be on terra firma for zip lining? Ditch the jungle zip lines for cruise zip lines!

It’s by no means the same experience (for starters, there’s only one or two lines on ships, not five or seven, and they’re short on most ships), but it’s fun nonetheless. Several Royal Caribbean ships have zip lines, and MSC Cruises has dueling zip lines.

Ride a Roller Coaster at Sea

Carnival Mardi Gras has a roller coaster at sea. Yes, a roller coaster…at sea! Carnival describes BOLT as the “fastest and first” seacoaster. You manage your speed, so you can zip from start to finish or start off a bit slower your first time on the coaster if you please.

Fireworks on the Water

It may not be surprising that a Disney Cruise Line sailing includes a firework show one night!

Fun Activities on Cruise Ships

Norwegian Speedway is the largest race track at sea. You can zip around turns (with a helmet) and race other passengers for a thrilling experience. Ride during the day and at night for two different experiences; neon lights illuminate the track after the sun goes down.

Unique Viewing Decks

Want some wild cruise ship entertainment? Then, consider these revolutionary attractions onboard top cruise lines.

Royal Caribbean’s North Star is a mechanical arm with a pod on the end that takes guests far above the cruise ship’s top deck – and the ocean. 300 Feet above sea level, to be exact. This attraction currently holds the Guinness World Record for the tallest viewing deck on a cruise ship.

Another truly unique experience is Carnival’s SkyRide. This double-track ride allows guests to ride a “bicycle” high in the sky for unparalleled views from above.

Rock Climbing Walls

Anyone who has been rock climbing knows what a great workout it is. So skip the gym and head to a rock climbing wall aboard Royal Caribbean or Norwegian Cruise Line.

Ropes Courses

If you like a challenge in the form of some heights and a balancing act, you’ll love going through ropes courses on cruise ships. Carnival has their SkyCourse , and Norwegian Cruise Line has a three-story ropes course.

Ice Skating Rink

Put on some skates and go on a romantic date (or family outing) aboard Royal Caribbean. This fun sport is the perfect activity for holding hands. If you’ve never tried it, a cruise is an ideal place to cure those cold feet.

Whether or not you want to try it yourself, Royal Caribbean has professional ice skaters onboard for wonderfully entertaining performances at night.

Kids of all ages will have a blast playing laser tag! Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean have exciting and fun laser tag courses (some complete with black lights and others in the open air) where you can try your best to beat the other team.

Movie Theaters and Planetariums

Movie theaters may be a dime a dozen on cruise ships. Most ships have a movie theater either by a pool or a dedicated theater with stadium seating.

However, it’s worth mentioning that Cunard cruise ships have planetariums onboard! That’s right: out-of-this-world, universe-exploring planetariums! Set sail for the stars while you’re sailing on the sea.

Music at Sea

In addition to many cruise lines having lounges where bands play nightly (whether jazz musicians or a guitarist and singer, for instance), some ships have other interesting musical acts.

Norwegian Cruise Line even has dueling pianos, a partnership with Howl at the Moon.

Miniature Golf

If you love a playful round of miniature golf, you’ll love this activity on cruises. It is likely to be a fun activity on board that allows you to get fresh air, but it’ll also provide a little fun competition. Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises, MSC Cruises, and Norwegian Cruise Line offer mini-golf.

Sports Entertainment

Cruise lines try to have the best onboard sports facilities possible, knowing that many cruise guests enjoy being active. This includes anything from onboard basketball courts, indoor (like on the Disney Wish ) and outdoor (like aboard Princess Cruise Ships), to golf simulators.

They stay on top of the times too! A perfect example of this is the addition of pickleball courts to many cruise ships .

Pickleball Courts on Cruise Ships

One of the newer popular sports activities on cruise ships – and sweeping the nation – is pickleball!

Cruise ships big and small are adding courts to attract people who love the sport or want to try it. AmaWaterways, a river cruise line, has added pickleball courts and big ships, like on Celebrity Cruises or Holland American Line.

Adults-Only Entertainment on Cruises

In addition to cruise ship entertainment available for all ages, adult-only specific entertainment is available on cruise ships.

For example, on many large and small ships, whether ocean or river cruise ships , you’ll be able to gamble in a casino, and on larger vessels, you’ll enjoy adults-only bars and nightclubs day and night.

Cruise Ship Entertainment on Small Ships

These ships typically carry less than 1,000 passengers (often half that or less) and have more limited options yet cater to an older audience. Small cruise ship lines definitely want to entertain their passengers, yet the ports are often the main attraction.

This means that there is undoubtedly onboard cruise ship entertainment, yet absent are rides for thrill seekers that need to one-up other cruise lines.

Musical performances

SeaDream Yacht Club, for example, has an onboard piano bar where you can enjoy some live music as you wind down for the evening.

A Danube River Cruise may present you with local performers, such as a group of German brass horn players while the ship is docked in Bavaria.

Theatrical Performances

Some small cruise ships entertain guests with theatrical performances at night – dance and drama included. For instance, American Queen Voyages, which primarily sails the Great Lakes and American Rivers, has an onboard theater with Broadway-caliber productions.

Another example is Hungarian dancers that come on board to dance to a live band when you sail rivers in Europe .

Crafts and Cooking Demonstrations

Some small ship cruises focus on cooking. Not just the cuisine served in the dining rooms but demonstrations . Scenic has a particular area for this purpose. Look for cruise itineraries with guest chefs of James Beard Award fame or Top Chef celebrity.

Additionally, they may bring craft specialists onboard. Cruisers aboard Emerald Cruises may find themselves painting a pair of clogs when they sail on a river cruise in The Netherlands, doubling as a take-home souvenir.

Will you Book a Cruise Based on Entertainment Options?

If a cruise’s entertainment menu is how you’re choosing to book a cruise, you have some tough decisions to make, given the myriad of options available nowadays. But, no matter your choice, there will never be a lack of things to do on a cruise and the various ways you’ll pass the time while creating lifelong memories!

It’s not a surprise that people seek out cruises because they seek entertainment during vacation. Whether bands, comedians, Broadway Shows, or rides – fascinating entertainment has become standard on big cruise lines. They have some […]

6 things I wish I knew before setting foot on a cruise ship that all first-time cruisers should keep in mind

  • I went on a cruise for the first time on Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas in April 2022.
  • After taking the trip, I think there are some things everyone should know before going on a cruise.
  • Here's what I learned about aspects as varied as how to pick a cabin and where to go for dinner.

Insider Today

Before I took my first cruise in April 2022, I had never even seen a cruise ship.

It was a seven-night voyage on one of the largest cruise ships in the world , Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas . We sailed from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Roatán, Honduras ; Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mexico; and Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas .

While I had a good time, I ultimately decided the cruising lifestyle wasn't for me . But there were some things that would've made my trip a little easier and more comfortable. Here's what I think all first-time cruisers should know before setting sail.

Some cruise ship cabins can be rockier than others, like those situated at the front of the ship.

types of entertainment on cruise ships

Before booking, I wish I'd researched how the location of a cabin can affect the amount of motion you feel while the ship is moving.

My ocean-view stateroom was at the front of the ship, and I didn't expect to feel as much movement in my cabin as I did. But I later learned that ships rock from side to side, so the front and back move more than the middle.

Several seasoned cruisers on the voyage told me that the front of the ship was one of the worst places to feel motion. Higher decks in the middle of the ship felt calmer and more stable.

If you are as prone to motion sickness as I am, I suggest choosing a room in the middle of the ship.

The restaurants included in the cruise rate had all different types of food and were high quality, so splurging on specialty restaurants wasn't necessary.

types of entertainment on cruise ships

One of the most distinctive things about cruising is that most meals, snacks, and drinks are included in the cruise rate.

But on large ships like Wonder of the Seas, more than a dozen restaurants with specialty offerings, like sushi, are not included and incur additional charges, either a one-time fee or by the dish. I paid $40 to $60 for each meal.

I reserved all specialty restaurants before my trip, but I wish I hadn't booked so many once I realized the included restaurants offered a wide range of delicious food to eat.

There was more than one buffet, and the main dining room served a three-course meal with changing menu items each night.

These included options satisfied every craving. One of the best meals I had was in the main dining room.

Since I booked so many specialty restaurants, I didn't have time to try all the buffets or eat in the main dining room more than once. If I had known they'd be so satisfying, I would've saved money and eaten more of the included meals instead.

Formal nights weren't enforced, so don't waste luggage space on nice outfits if you don't want to participate.

I hate dressing formally, but I knew cruises required formal nights , so I brought one nice dress with me. After the first formal night, however, I learned that the dress code wasn't strictly enforced. I noticed people wore a variety of outfits, from evening gowns to T-shirts.

I relaxed my look on the other two formal nights, but the dress felt like a waste of the limited space in my suitcase. If I had known it wasn't necessary to wear, I would've left it at home.

Laundry on board was expensive, so bring a bar of laundry soap to save money.

Since I brought only a  carry-on suitcase , I was hoping to get some laundry done on board, but then I saw the pricing sheet .

I live in New York City, and most apartments I've rented haven't included in-unit laundry. So I'm used to paying for my clothes to be washed. But rather than pricing by weight like local New York laundromats, Royal Caribbean charges for each article of clothing. Each shirt costs $4, and a dress costs $9, while washing just one pair of underwear would be $2.

This would add up fast, I thought, so I didn't get any laundry done on my trip. If I had known the pricing before my trip, I would've brought a bar of laundry soap to hand-wash a few things.

Though it was a Caribbean cruise, I got chilly, so bring some warm clothing.

My favorite times to be on the top decks of the ship were early in the morning and late at night , when there weren't as many crowds. But during those times, there were cold, strong winds, which made me wish I'd brought more than one sweater and pair of pants.

I would've brought a few more pairs of pants and another sweater to keep me warm (instead of the poofy formal dress). Since I didn't, I ended up wearing the same pants and sweater nearly every morning and evening.

I would've brought my own case of water if I knew it was allowed.

To ensure I stayed hydrated throughout my trip, I opted for the water bottle package while booking trip extras like restaurant reservations and excursions. For $16, Royal Caribbean delivered a case of 24 water bottles to my cabin. It seemed expensive for a pack of water, but I thought this was just part of the price of cruising.

Then when I was boarding the ship, I noticed people carrying their own cases of water. That's when I realized that Royal Caribbean allows guests to bring their own nonalcoholic beverages as well as nonperishable snacks.

If I had known this, I would've brought my own water and a few snacks, too.

If I'd known these details before my cruise, I could've prepared to have a better time while saving some money. I hope they help other first-time cruisers.

While I enjoyed parts of my cruise, some of this knowledge could've made my trip much more comfortable. If I ever cruise meet other soon-to-be first-time cruisers, I'll remember what I learned about cabin locations, formal nights, and cool, windy mornings sailing in the Caribbean Sea.

Discovery Princess review

When some think of cruises, a picture of cheesy, matching family T-shirts comes to mind. Perhaps you think of long lines at the buffet and loop-de-loop water slides that never seem to end on the lido deck. For some, this image isn’t relaxing, but not all ships are created equal.

The lovely Discovery Princess , the second newest cruise ship among Princess Cruises’ fleet, is one of the most elegant I’ve voyaged on — and I’ve been on 10+ cruises (read: best cruises I reviewed ). So, you can say I’ve become quite the cruise critic over the years.

While each cruise ship has something unique to offer, I can honestly say my experience setting sail on the Discovery Princess was my favorite cruise yet.

RELATED : Princess unveils its new Sun Princess ship

As part of the itinerary’s Pacific Wine Country Tour for an April 2024 sailing, I embarked from the Los Angeles port in San Pedro, CA and then traveled to San Diego; San Francisco; Astoria, OR; and Victoria and Vancouver, Canada. The best part was experiencing Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley on one of Princess Cruises’ excursions, but more on that later.

To assemble an in-depth review of my experience, I divided this piece into a few sections: who it’s good for, activities and entertainment, food and drink options, excursions and special features. Consider this your all-in-one guide. After all, I did plenty of research myself — a discovery , if you will — via YouTube videos, Discovery Princess Facebook groups and by way of the easy-to-use Princess app. Not to mention, since I’ve cruised on other lines, including Carnival, Celebrity, NCL and Royal Caribbean, you’ll find some comparison notes as well.

Even better, this cruise vacation was with my high school best friend, Veronica, who has never been aboard a cruise ship. It was such a unique experience seeing all that Discovery Princess had to offer with her first-time perspective, which is infused within this review as well.

Who it’s good for

Views from The Sanctuary, Discovery Princess' adults-only retreat.

Most cruise lines are designed for whatever you’d like your vacation to be, whether it’s solo travel, couples traveling, a best friend cruise (I’m representing this demographic here) and family trips. Aboard Discovery Princess, I even saw a 20+ family reunion. The possibilities are endless, and some sailings may yield older or younger demographics depending on the itinerary, length of the cruise and other factors.

Veronica and I are both in our early 20s, and we found the Discovery Princess to cater to an older crowd, as we saw many middle- and senior-aged couples. However, we scouted a handful of young adult couples, just not nearly as many as you’d find on more “ family-friendly ” cruise lines, like Carnival and Royal Caribbean.

However, this isn’t a dealbreaker in the slightest. A cruise is what you make of it, and we enjoyed trying top-of-the-line specialty restaurants, heading to Broadway-production-style shows, booking excursions for each port we docked at and relaxing in the Lotus Spa , the latter being a true R&R highlight. Pro tip: pick up a Miami Vice or your favorite cocktail at one of Discovery’s bars before heading to The Enclave, the spa’s modern, state-of-the-art relaxation centers with a jet pool, two different sauna rooms and heated lounge chairs. You definitely won’t be sorry.

Because Discovery Princess was my first trip with Princess Cruises, I can’t speak if the slightly older clientele is characteristic of the cruise line at large or this specific itinerary. Granted, it was a wine-centric itinerary at the end of April, so I wasn’t expecting to see many passengers younger than 21-years-old on each deck. Additionally, we didn’t sail in peak summertime months when school’s out and more family vacations may take place.

While I certainly remember way more families aboard other cruise lines, that’s not to say Princess isn’t family-friendly. There’s a variety of entertainment options, which you’ll find on the stateroom patter (otherwise known as a printed itinerary) each evening, placed at the foot of your bed by a stateroom attendant. Or, you can follow along on the Princess app.

Activities and entertainment

One of the highlights from the Discovery Princess ship is, without question, the activities and entertainment that I’d say is world-class. I grew up going to theaters, Broadway shows and local productions and it was clear as day that the variety of shows featured well-versed actors, performers, dancers, singers and a legitimate crew to put together the lighting, choreography and the entire setup from start to finish.

If heading to shows isn’t entirely your thing, that’s OK, too; Discovery Princess had a multitude of game shows, comedians, dance and deck parties (sometimes, dance parties on the deck), trivia and more. Below, I ran through some of the activities and entertainment options Veronica and I experienced during our April 2024 sailing:

Production Shows at Princess Theater

Princess Theater

One of the most memorable experiences aboard Discovery Princess was heading to the Production Shows during the eight-day cruise. Show times and type may vary depending on the sailing, though you can expect two Production-level shows. These mimic the vibe exuded on Broadway.

Aboard Discovery, I went to the “Spotlight Bar” show, where the full cast sang radio, sing-along hits in front of a bar scene. The group dances and individual ballads were nothing short of phenomenal. As much as I loved watching the first Production-level show, I adored the “Rock Opera” show, a fusion of 80s rock with opera-style performances. Think: “The Greatest Showman” meets Cyndi Lauper. The costumes, set and overall segue from song to song was unparalleled; I didn’t want it to end.

Additionally, Princess Cruises has two show times for its Production-level shows: one at 7:30 p.m. and another at 9:30 p.m. This works out well, that way you have options to work around your dinner reservations or late-night activities, like the after-hours comedian or DJ.

Aside from Production Shows at Princess Theater, there were two to three other shows performed by soloists Willis White and Nick Petris who paid homage to music icons Lionel Richie and Michael Bublé, respectively. Both were excellent and entertaining. Princess Theater also hosted a magician one night, though we didn’t attend.

Game Shows at Princess Live!

Another sit-back-and-relax moment aboard Discovery was the schedule of game shows from the first to last evening on the cruise. Sometimes, game shows can be corny, but the Princess crew truly knew how to entertain.

Veronica and I attended a few, including “Top, Middle or Bottom” where passengers took turns selecting Jeopardy-style tiles and either passing through to the next column (a checkmark), receiving one of three X-es (a firecracker symbol) or a trivia question (a question mark). It was a pretty suspenseful guessing game and one that kept us pretty entertained.

Another game show we attended one evening was called “Majority Rules,” where we’d answer somewhat controversial questions like, “Who’s the best female singer?” or “What’s the greatest film of all time?” As the name suggests, the majority rules, and each “team” tallies up their points to crown the ultimate victor.

The vibe of the game shows was the perfect after-dinner activity. Many cruisers sat in armchairs with a drink in hand, just relaxing and enjoying the atmosphere. The best part? Most game shows were hosted by the cruise director. Kristoff, if you’re reading this, we love you .

Comedy Shows at Vista Lounge (nicknamed “Laugh Lounge”)

Laugh Lounge

For fans of stand-up comedy, Discovery hosted quite a few comedy shows, divided among three comedians on my particular sailing. These shows were hosted at Vista Lounge, a sophisticated and snazzy venue space, though the backdrop transforms into a brick-style background with a neon “Laugh Lounge” sign in cursive, apropos of the crew’s production team.

Some comedians starred on Comedy Central and popular Late Night shows and had us laughing to no end. Whether it’s your first cruise or you’re a four-times-a-year cruiser, the banter and jokes made about cruising pet peeves is witty, relatable and entertaining.

Most of all, I loved the variety of comedians aboard Discovery. On a previous Carnival cruise, there was only one comedian who, although was great at improv comedy and picking on audience members, didn’t inspire me to see all seven of his shows. The comedians aboard Discovery were proof that live entertainment on this ship is purely unforgettable.

The Dance Competition

Slightly hidden on the itinerary, the Princess Dance Competition allows passengers and crew members to be selected at random in the cruise’s version of “Dancing with the Stars.” Spoiler alert: this was one of my favorite moments from the cruise. I ended up participating, dancing with a crew member from the buffet team and ended up *winning* the whole competition. And yes, I ended up doing a split. There’s something I didn’t think I’d do on a cruise ship…

Other activities and entertainment

Discovery Princess Casino

From regular perusing of the daily itinerary, there are additional activities to enjoy. Discovery ensured that there were enough options to choose from on both sea days and days at port. On some other cruise lines, there was next to nothing to do in the afternoons, so this was a nice touch.

Below, find a sampling of events and activities you may expect to experience aboard Discovery Princess:

  • “Deal or No Deal” show: Similar to Bingo, which was also offered aboard Discovery, game cards for Deal or No Deal were being sold. As an audience member, you have quite a few chances to win the ultimate prize, following along as the show goes on.
  • Casino : Many cruisers enjoy spending time at the casino, whether it be individual slot machines or Blackjack and Roulette tables. I enjoyed spending some time at the Casino, but keep in mind this is only open during times at sea due to port laws and regulations.
  • Fitness classes : Discovery offers a gym-grade fitness center with professional equipment and even pilates, barre, yoga and HIIT classes you can sign up for.
  • Line dancing : On Discovery, there’s a ton of line dancing happening in The Piazza, the main epicenter of the ship. This exists on other cruises I’ve sailed on as well, but this sailing took it to the next level.
  • Afternoon tea : During sea days, Discovery hosted an afternoon tea at 3:00 p.m. in one of the three main dining rooms. Complete with finger sandwiches, teas and handhelds, passengers loved the experience. We skipped it on our cruise only because one of our excursions in Victoria, Canada was having high tea at a mansion.
  • Cocktail experiences : Around 4:45 p.m. or so, Discovery hosted cocktail experiences every few days. This sip-and-learn activity is hosted at one of the main bars and a bartender will walk you through crafting tips, different flavor pairings and, of course, mixing drinks right in front of you.

Food and drink options

An incredible, standout feature aboard Discovery Princess was its wealth of well-varied food and beverage options. If you’ve been on a cruise before, you know you’ll never go hungry, but this ship’s prized dining room service, quality and flair was a step above other cruises I’ve been on.

Main Dining Room

Discovery Princess has three main dining rooms: Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway, all named after locations in Alaska, one of the ship’s most-traveled-to destinations. Each passenger or passenger group will be assigned one of the three main dining rooms to eat at each evening with different times as well. Wonderfully, there was much flexibility at each dining room if you preferred to dine a bit earlier or later than your scheduled time.

Compared to other ships, the food in the main dining rooms was much better and closely on par with the multitude of specialty dining options you’ll find on board. You’ll find at least one formal night (aka, lobster night for seafood fans) where nearly everyone is decked out in cocktail attire to take professional photos and enjoy a delicious menu. Production-level shows are usually this night as well.

Breakfast in the main dining room was also an enjoyable experience, where you can enjoy fresh juices, pastries, fruits and main courses. The menu was smaller than other cruises I’ve been on, but this wasn’t a dealbreaker.

The World Fresh Marketplace

World Fresh Marketplace

The World Fresh Marketplace, otherwise known as the buffet, didn’t have a miles-long line like some other cruises I’ve sailed on. The options were diverse, delicious and perfect for a quick bite. Veronica and I loved the taco bar and pasta station, as well as the fresh fruit counter. Not to mention, the service is one of the best; waitstaff circles around tables to offer you fresh water, juice or soda on trays, making it extra convenient for your overall dining experience.

International Café

Located on Deck 5 next to The Piazza, International Café is a complimentary, luxury-leaning, grab-and-go counter where you’ll find fresh pastries (note: the almond croissants, heated up, are to die for), desserts and handcrafted sandwiches. This is also where you can grab lattes, cappuccinos and other beverages.

Veronica and I dined here nearly every morning before an early excursion because it’s delicious, in a great location and, overall, a quick venue. The service was top-notch and well-loved by passengers; plenty of people aboard grabbed a coffee and sat at one of the tables along The Piazza to enjoy live pianists, vocalists and other entertainment throughout the day and into the evening.

What’s more, the International Café is complimentary. On other cruise lines, each specialty coffee and pastry was an extra charge. This is a testament to Princess Cruises’ affinity for quality-first dining experiences.

Ocean Terrace Sushi Bar

Ocean Terrace Sushi Bar, an incredibly fresh dining locale aboard Discovery Princess.

The love I have for Ocean Terrace Sushi Bar is tenfold. Before dinner on some evenings, Veronica and I would head to this modern counter — located right above and overlooking The Piazza — to enjoy fresh crab, shrimp and spicy tuna rolls that are handmade right in front of our eyes. The quality was some of the best I’ve had. It’s a casual yet spectacular setting. Additional charges may apply depending on what you order.

Gigi’s Pizzeria by Alfredo

Gigi's Pizza by Alfredo

Also one deck above The Piazza, Gigi’s Pizzeria by Alfredo is another sit-down locale where you can enjoy live music surrounding you. This was the first food venue Veronica and I dined at for lunch on embarkation day and we loved the fresh Margherita and veggie pizzas, as well as the salads.

Uniquely, the pizza options are certified authentic Neapolitan pizza, much like its gelato on board (which is located on the same deck as The Piazza, and one of the only cruise ships to boast gelato that’s certified by the Italian government). Pretty iconic, to say the least.

360: An Extraordinary Experience

360: An Extraordinary Experience

If you ask me about the most memorable experience aboard Discovery Princess of them all, it was what’s called 360. This isn’t just any specialty dining venue. For an additional charge per person (about $150 or so), the dining staff will take you through “a journey through tastes, sights, sounds, textures and scents,” per the cruise line.

This seven-course journey is both filling and fantastically put together. Without giving too much away, the meals are inspired by the Mediterranean and, according to the hostess Magdalena, “you won’t find this food anywhere else on board — even at the specialty dining venues.”

This 360 Experience is reserved for 13-year-olds and older, though my group had nobody younger than 21-years-old. For some, the idea of not knowing what you’ll be eating can be somewhat terrifying but rest assured, the team takes any dietary restrictions into account. For instance, Veronica has a shellfish allergy an they made an equally delicious substitute. If you take anything away from this review, book 360 .

The Catch by Rudi

The Catch by Rudi

Veronica and I enjoyed The Catch by Rudi , Discovery’s seafood specialty restaurant. Everything from the service to the presentation was extravagant and this was my favorite specialty restaurant on the ship. It’s a pure celebration of all things ocean.

Typical of other specialty restaurants you’ll find, you’ll choose one appetizer, one main course and one dessert. The cocktails at The Catch by Rudi were some of our favorites. My dish, called the Triple S Platter because it contained salmon, scallops and shrimp, was mouthwatering. There was even a hanging prawn on my plate when our waitress brought it out!

Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria

You can take the girl out of New Jersey, but you can’t take New Jersey out of the girl. From someone who comes from a family making their own sauce each Sunday, Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria was a much-needed dining option in my books. Here, you’ll actually find a five-course meal: an appetizer, a soup or salad, a pasta, an entree and a dessert. In short, come hungry.

The food and cocktails here were incredible and we loved the on-the-house rice balls the waitstaff presented to each table. It was so delicious that we ordered room service from Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria one evening as we watched Discovery sail away from one of our ports. It was heaven .

Sometimes, you just want a comfort meal, like lasagna or lemon chicken. Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria 100% satisfied that craving for both of us, and we enjoyed every minute of our time here.

Crown Grill

Ah, we’ve landed at Discovery’s steakhouse. Ranked one of the best cruise ship steakhouses, per Princess Cruises website, Crown Grill features premium aged beef and fresh seafood items. Its open kitchen design and elegant setting make it a lovely choice. Not to mention, you can have a tasting of all of the sides.

Above all else, you’ll want to experience Crown Grill’s ribeye steak and filet mignon if you’re a lover of chops. The glazes, sauces, whipped butter and specialty salts (yes, you read that correctly) made the experience very upscale.

Shore excursions

Whether you take excursions is entirely based on personal preference. On the Pacific Wine Country Tour aboard Discovery Princess , Veronica and I embarked on the following crew-organized options:

  • San Diego, CA : City Drive & La Jolla Highlights
  • San Francisco, CA : Sonoma Wine Country
  • Astoria, Oregon : Willamette Valley Wine Country
  • Victoria, Canada : High Tea at Pendray Mansion & City Highlights

From experiencing some of the best wine in the Pacific to learning the ins and outs of popular locations like San Francisco and Vancouver Island, we felt each tour was well-organized and worth the added cost. Among all the excursions on this particular voyage, we enjoyed Sonoma Wine Country the most because, after all, who doesn’t want to travel to Napa?

Booking excursions is simple to do so on the Princess app. Or, you can opt to check in regularly with the Shore Excursions desk on Deck 5 near The Piazza to ask any questions you may have. Veronica and I decided to swap our previously booked biking excursion in Oregon to experience more of wine country and the crew staff was able to reprint new tickets as the tour wasn’t fully booked.

If you aren’t able to book your first-choice excursion, I wouldn’t worried. While there aren’t guarantees, Princess will hold you on an organized waitlist. In fact, Veronica and I were on a waitlist for Sonoma Wine Country and luckily joined the tour.

Additionally, every excursion through Princess guarantees your arrival back on the ship as it departs. You’ve likely heard of “cruise horror stories” where certain cruise lines will leave you if you’re not back by the arranged on-board time. Even if an excursion is running a bit late (like mine in Oregon), rest assured the ship will not depart without you. If you opt to journey at a port on your own and you’re late, that may be a different story.

Special features

Without a doubt, Discovery Princess had a catalog of special features that I remember even after my cruise. Below, find them listed:

  • MedallionClass : Instead of a stateroom card that serves as your ID and cabin entry, Discovery operates via a Medallion that’s a bit larger than a quarter and inscribed with your name. Whether you use the included lanyard or opt to buy a Medallion accessory, like a clip, this makes it so much easier to charge extras to your ship account (called your Folio). The Medallion serves as a tracker as well, so the service tends to operate quicker than other ships because of facial recognition, made possible by the photo you took on embarkation day or that you’ve uploaded to your Princess app profile. You can even enter your stateroom hands-free!
  • The Enclave at Lotus Spa : For about $165 per person, you can enjoy unlimited access to The Enclave, the private resort-style room at the Lotus Spa where you’ll find a jet pool, saunas and heated beds. You’ll also have access to the Relaxation Room, a wonderful sanctuary for reading, meditating and enjoying ice water with cucumber or lemon. This made the trip feel a bit more higher-end than what may be offered on some older ships.
  • Larger than usual staterooms : Veronica and I were at a balcony cabin which tends to be larger than interior staterooms. However, when I first entered our balcony cabin, I was blown away by how much space we had. Other cruise lines had extremely small bathrooms, showers and walking space near the beds. The ship’s design — featuring smaller staircase landings and hallways — allows the individual rooms to be a hair larger than most other ships.
  • Smooth embarkation and disembarkation process : Largely in part by the MedallionClass experience, Veronica and I were able to disembark within 30 minutes. I’ve experienced hours upon hours of wait times at other cruise ports and was impressed by the swiftness to enter and leave the ship. Plus, Princess accommodates your preferred time on most occasions, especially if you have a flight booked.
  • Ship size : You won’t feel like you’re at a shopping mall on Discovery. The ship occupies 3,660 guests instead of 8,000 or so I’ve experienced on other ships. This is the ideal size in my opinion and, considering a quite manageable passenger count, there was *so* much to do. You’re receiving the complete cruise experience sans the chaos, which we both appreciated.

The bottom line

Discovery Princess

Everything from the dining experiences to activities and overall service on the Discovery Princess made our voyage extremely memorable. Each step of the way, I felt as if I was on a luxury vacation, even though some experiences — like specialty dining and the Lotus Spa — were additional costs. The Production Shows, endless entertainment and accommodations deserve awards of their own, and I would surely set sail on another Princess Cruise again. Veronica, first-time cruiser, would, too!
