Curator Mona Filip leads a tour of Pizandawatc / The One Who Listens / Celui qui écoute, a survey of Anishinaabe/French artist Caroline Monnet’s prolific production.

event title

Pizandawatc / The One Who Listens / Celui qui écoute is a major survey of the multidisciplinary work of Anishinaabe / French artist Caroline Monnet, examining the deep connections between land, language, and cultural transmission. Presenting a range of connected new and existing works,  Pizandawatc  offers a comprehensive view of Monnet’s complex aesthetic vocabulary, polyvalent material dexterity, and cohesive conceptual investigation. Combining the vocabulary of Anishinaabe visual culture with industrial materials, Monnet’s sculptures, mixed media works, videos, and installations expand on the centrality of the land and its resources in Anishinaabe spirituality, history, and resilience.

This event is free and all are welcome.

About the Curator Mona Filip is Curator at the Art Museum at the University of Toronto. Originally from Bucharest, Romania, Filip received her BFA from the Corcoran School of Art, Washington DC, and her MFA from SUNY at Buffalo. Previously Director/Curator of the Koffler Gallery, she led the organization’s visual art program for fifteen years, producing over forty exhibitions and off-site projects. She developed first public gallery shows in Toronto of prominent Canadian artists such as Ghazaleh Avarzamani, Sameer Farooq, Karen Tam, and José Luis Torres, and first Canadian exhibitions of acclaimed international artists Raphaël Zarka (France) and Christian Hidaka (UK), Sigalit Landau (Israel), Esther Shalev-Gerz (France), Isabel Rocamora (UK/Spain), Iara Freiberg (Brazil/Argentina) Adi Nes (Israel), and Joshua Neustein (USA).

U of T producers set to make their Cannes debut with two films

""

Weijie Lai, left, and Elizabeth Wijaya, right, have two films premiering at this year’s Cannes Film Festival (photo by Nick Iwanyshyn)

Published: May 14, 2024

By Chris Hampton

The University of Toronto’s Elizabeth Wijaya  and Weijie Lai  are headed to the French Riviera to see not one, but two films debut at Cannes.

The two scholars – Wijaya is an assistant professor in U of T Mississauga’s department of visual studies, Lai is a Cinema Studies instructor – co-founded the company, E&W Films, that led the production of Mongrel,  which is set to premiére as part of the Director’s Fortnight, an independent section that runs in parallel to theCannes Film Festival and is organized by the French Directors’ Guild.

The film, which marks the feature debut of co-directors Chiang Wei Liang and You Qiao Yin, tells the story of Oom, an undocumented migrant who works as a caregiver in the mountains of rural Taiwan.

Meanwhile, director Trương Minh Quý’s  Việt and Nam will compete in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard category, which is dedicated to non-traditional stories and styles. The film, also produced by E&W, follows two lovers, one from the north and the other from the south, on a mission that explores the dreams and trauma of the southeast Asian country’s children.

“I would say both films this year are heavy, but they have very distinct artistic visions,” Wijaya says. “With everything we work on under E&W Films, we look out for that sense of directorial vision or artistic voice.”

Main character Oom is seen at a hospital dirty and bruised

Wijaya and Lai met in an undergraduate philosophy and film course at the National University of Singapore. They launched E&W Films for practical reasons: they needed somewhere to hold funds while raising money to make Lai’s thesis film project. Later, E&W Films produced a short project for an undergraduate schoolmate: director Kirsten Tan. Next, the pair moved on to produce Tan’s debut feature Pop Aye , which won a Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. Fast forward to today and E&W Films now has more than a dozen productions under its belt.

Wijaya generally defines her roles as development, strategy and co-ordination while Lai is more hands-on, helping facilitate everything from ideation and scripting to fundraising, production, sales and distribution.

Main characters Nam and Việt touch hands standing on the shore of a beach

The couple’s dedication to film media, as well as their teaching and scholarship, has enriched U of T Mississauga’s department of visual studies, where they’ve built the UTM Asian Short Film Collection (accessible to anyone with a U of T library account) and organized the UTM DVS filmmaker-in-residence program, which has welcomed international talents such as Davy Chou, Pimpaka Towira and Anocha Suwichakornpong to campus for workshops, lectures and screenings.

Two projects currently in development by E&W Films have also received U of T Mississauga funding: an eco-horror project directed by Gogularaajan Rajendran was awarded the Black, Indigenous, and/or Racialized Scholar Research Grant, and  The Sea is Calm Tonight  by filmmaker Lê Bảo was given seed support by the Research and Scholarly Activity Fund.

The opportunity presented by the Cannes’ platform is enormous, the producers say.

“It's the biggest international market in terms of the number of attendees,” Lai says. “The most number of critics internationally are there. The most number of distributors are there and sales agents and things like that … So if you're there, in theory, more people will watch your film.”

While E&W Films has had a presence at the festival for years, this is the first time its work is set to be screened at Cannes.

“I think I’m excited just to see the first reactions,” Wijaya says.

Lai, too, says he’s looking forward to the experience.

“By the time we get to the world premi ère, you've seen the film so many times that you’re actually bored stiff,” he says. “But for some reason, when you're sitting there with a fresh audience during the world premi ère … the feeling is always different. You feel the energy of the audience, and fingers crossed the energy is good.”

WINNIPEG — Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew is touring an area in the province’s northwest today that has been hit by a large wildfire.

Manitoba premier to tour fire zone as evacuees await word on their future Back to video

Hundreds of people were told to leave Cranberry Portage on the weekend as winds drove the fire close to the community.

Earl Simmons, the province’s wildfire director, says the blaze spread faster than any fire he’s seen.

Some residents are being offered an escorted drive through the fire zone today.

In a social media post, the Rural Municipality of Kelsey says residents who went south to The Pas and wish to relocate north to Flin Flon are being given the opportunity this afternoon.

The municipality says it is not sure how long the state of emergency will last.

YouTuber Goes Viral Rapping Along to Kendrick Lamar's "Not Like Us" Through Streets of Toronto

YouTuber Steezy Kane showed no mercy in the streets of Drake's hometown.

YouTuber Steezy Kane caught folks' attention this week after taking to the streets of Toronto for an impromptu performance of Kendrick Lamar 's "Not Like Us."

The long rivalry between Drake and Kendrick has included attacks on each other's home turf. Parading the anti- Drake track in Toronto, when the "Family Matters" artist reps the 6, is certainly disrespectful, but that didn't stop Kane from putting on a street-stopping performance that shocked passerbys.

X users had a lot to say about Kane's moves and rap chops, as well as his decision to thrown down and destroy his headphones at the 1:30 mark of the video, unsettling some bystanders nearby. Four minutes into the video, a truck driver joins in on the fun, allowing Kane to hop into his ride and continue rapping.

Later in the video, Kane passes out roses to people on the street, asking them to decide between Drake and Kendrick.

As far as I’m concerned, this is the music video https://t.co/bFyLjOarYP — ✨Kei$ha✨ (@GlamazonJay) May 14, 2024
Rap beef in the content era is strange. like this is super cringe and also super hilarious at the same time. uncanny valley shit. this some shit Donald glover would do and pitchfork would like it https://t.co/YCEFSPJ7Kx — Yassify Bey • 🇵🇸 • ☭ (@fwmj) May 14, 2024
The reason this is so dope is because hip hop used to produce this type of reaction. Songs were so ill you didn’t care where you were, you’d spit it out loud. It even is a bridge of connection as the video shows. More hip hop that produces this type of reaction plz 🙏🏽 https://t.co/w4Ooz6QYDb — Chris L Butler ✍🏽 💎🍉 (@CLBpoetry) May 14, 2024

Kane, an Austin native, reacted to the 919K and counting views on the video, writing that he knows "Kendrick [has] seen the video" and promoting his work.

"For any new people here who don’t know who I am, just wanna let y’all know that film/tv is where I’m heading. This YouTube goofy shit is fun for now, but a filmmaker is what I am at my core — don’t forget that," he wrote.

Apparently, Kane has also worked with another one of Drake's friends-turned-foes, The Weeknd, for his Vanity Fair promotional spot last year.

Two tweets from user Steezzz_ discussing their core identity as a filmmaker and hoping Kendrick has seen their video

My greatest accomplishment in life was co-writing this for @theweeknd !! Being in the same room as him was insane -- I still cannot believe this happened. Hopefully more to come soon. pic.twitter.com/lMdOqI2gMo — Steezzz💤 (@steezykane) May 14, 2024

Kansas City Chiefs player faces backlash for graduation speech criticizing working women, calling Pride a 'deadly sin'

Harrison Butker delivered the commencement address at Benedictine College.

The kicker for the Kansas City Chiefs is facing backlash after delivering a commencement address that touched on everything from Pride Month to women's roles in the home, abortion and in vitro fertilization.

"It is safe to say that over the years, I have gained quite the reputation for speaking my mind," Harrison Butker said at the start of his address, which he delivered May 11 at Benedictine College, a Catholic liberal arts college in Atchison, Kansas.

Butker, who has sparked controversy in the past for his public stances on religion, LGBTQ topics and abortion, criticized President Joe Biden for his stance as a Catholic who supports abortion rights before turning to speak directly to the women in the graduating class, saying they had been told "the most diabolical lies."

PHOTO: Harrison Butker speaks to the 2024 graduates of Benedictine College, May 11, 2024, in Atchison, Kan.

"Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world," Butker, 28, said. "I can tell you that my beautiful wife Isabelle would be the first to say that her life truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and a mother."

Butker and his wife share two young children. Isabelle Butker has spoken publicly about converting to Catholicism before the couple's 2018 marriage.

"I'm on this stage today and able to be the man I am because I have a wife who leans into her vocation," Butker continued. "I am beyond blessed with the many talents God has given me, but it cannot be overstated that all of my success is made possible because a girl I met in band class, back in middle school, would convert to the faith, become my wife and embrace one of the most important titles of all, homemaker."

Butker added, "I've seen firsthand how much happier someone can be when they disregard the outside noise and move closer and closer to God's will for life. Isabelle's dream of having a career might not have come true, but if you ask her today if she has any regrets on her decision, she would laugh out loud without hesitation and say no."

Parents of LBGTQ+ kids share joy of parenting in their own words

The football player also said men should step up for families, saying, "This absence of men in the home is what plays a large role in the violence we see all around the nation."

"Be unapologetic in your masculinity, fighting against the culture of the emasculation of men," he said, adding that men "set the tone of the culture."

"Do hard things," he added. "Never settle for what is easy."

PHOTO: Harrison Butker, right, celebrates with his children after kicking the go ahead field goal to beat the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII at State Farm Stadium, Feb. 12, 2023, in Glendale, Ariz.

Elsewhere in his 20-minute speech, Butker described Pride month, which typically falls in June and is dedicated to supporting the LGBTQ+ community, as a "deadly sin."

He also referenced popstar Taylor Swift , who is dating his teammate Travis Kelce , by citing some of the lyrics from her song "Bejeweled."

"Tragically, so many priests revolve much of their happiness from the adulation they receive from their parishioners," he said. "And in searching for this, they let their guard down and become overly familiar. This undue familiarity will prove to be problematic every time, because as my teammate's girlfriend says, familiarity breeds contempt."

ABC News has reached out to Butker for comment.

Justice Horn, a former Kansas City commissioner, spoke out in the wake of Butker's comments over the weekend, writing on X , "Harrison Butker doesn't represent Kansas City nor has he ever. Kansas City has always been a place that welcomes, affirms, and embraces our LGBTQ+ community members."

Taylor Swift wears Kansas City Chiefs colors during European Eras tour

Outsports, a media platform that covers the LGBTQ+ community, commented on the fact that Butker included a reference to Swift in his speech, writing on X , "One of the worst parts of this NFL player's awful speech is that he quoted a Taylor Swift song before telling women they should be homemakers and serve their man's career."

Sarah Kate Ellis, president and CEO of GLAAD, an LGBTQ+ organization, also responded to Butker's speech, calling it "inaccurate, ill-informed, and woefully out of step with Americans about Pride, LGBTQ people and women."

"Those with expansive platforms, especially athletes, should use their voices to uplift and expand understanding and acceptance in the world," Ellis said in a statement. "Instead, Butker's remarks undermine experiences not of his own and reveal him to be one who goes against his own team’s commitment to the Kansas City community, and the NFL's standards for respect, inclusion, and diversity across the League.”

Benedictine College, which has around 2,100 undergraduate students, has disabled comments on a YouTube video of Butker's speech.

The college did not respond to ABC News' request for comment on Butker's commencement address.

The NFL told ABC News the organization is "steadfast" in its "commitment to inclusion."

“Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity. His views are not those of the NFL as an organization," Jonathan Beane, the league's chief diversity and inclusion officer, told ABC News in a statement. "The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger.”

The Kansas City Chiefs did not reply to ABC News' request for comment.
