15 Best Things to Do in Hudson (MA)

A former manufacturing town with Irish and Portuguese roots, Hudson is a resilient place that has bounced back from a few knocks down the years.

One was a fire that took out 40 buildings in the town center in 1894. Later, the shoe industry, which had been the town’s lifeblood, dwindled after WWII, and then during the Great Recession big employer Intel closed down its semiconductor facility in the town.

And yet for residents and visitors, Hudson is more inviting than ever. This is all down to a transformation that has swept over Main Street, turning it into a culinary destination with innovative businesses, and live music in the air all year.

A multi-use rail trail links downtown Hudson with Marlborough and Maynard, and in the last few years a high-profile military museum has opened on the east side of town.

1. Downtown Hudson

visit hudson ma

Always animated, sociable and fun, Hudson’s central commercial district fits most people’s idea of how a downtown area should be in the 21st century.

On Main Street it’s easy to shop local because there’s such a diversity of thriving businesses, many with original concepts that inspire curiosity.

None of this is by accident, as downtown Hudson’s metamorphosis since the early 2010s was a response to the Great Recession and blows to the town’s economy.

Dozens of events breathe extra life into the town center, like a weekly summer farmers’ market, seasonal pop-up markets, ArtsFest in June, Celebrate Hudson in September, and the weekly Downtown Music Series every Thursday and Saturday evening in summer.

2. American Heritage Museum

visit hudson ma

Fair to say that the Hewlett-Packard engineer, Jacques Littlefield (1949-2009), had a passion for historic military hardware.

Starting in the early 1980s he amassed more than $30 million worth of tanks, howitzers, armored cars, missile launchers and personnel carriers, with the aim of restoring them and presenting them to the public.

This dream was realized posthumously in 2013 when Littlefield’s foundation donated his collection to the Collings Foundation, a non-profit for the preservation and public display of transportation-related history.

The hardware at the American Heritage Museum is grouped by campaign or theater, mostly centered on WWII. So you’ve got the Eastern Front, North Africa, The Italian Campaign, The Battle Of the Bulge, D-Day, The Battle for Berlin, as well as additional zones for the Korean War, Vietnam War, Cold War, Gulf War and the War on Terrorism.

3. Assabet River Rail Trail

visit hudson ma

Bending through downtown Hudson is a multi-use rail trail that has been laid down in phases since 2005 and will eventually connect Marlborough with Acton.

The Assabet River Rail Trail is on the converted railbed of the old Marlborough Branch (completed 1855) of the Fitchburg Railroad.

At the time of writing the trail was practically completed, save for a 3.4-mile section between the South Acton MBTA station and the Maynard–Stow line.

The trail runs unbroken through Hudson from the trailhead on Wilkins Street, and is a safe way to commute between downtown Hudson and downtown Marlborough. If you need bike accessories or servicing, Assabet River Bicycles is right next to the trail downtown.

4. New City Microcreamery

visit hudson ma

You can discover the joys of liquid nitrogen ice cream at this one-of-a-kind shop that was founded in 2015 and has already opened locations in Sudbury and Cambridge.

If you’re wondering about the benefit of liquid nitrogen for ice cream, this super-cold substance creates a smaller ice crystal, giving the ice cream a much smoother texture.

Among the flavors are tried-and-tested classics like chocolate, mint chip, and cookie dough, as well as a range of New City creations, from cannoli to baklava, creme de menthe & chocolate, vanilla bourbon, and creamsicle.

Something that isn’t advertised is that there’s a speakeasy on these premises.

5. Wood Park

visit hudson ma

This delightful little public park is on a stretch of the Assabet River just upstream from downtown Hudson. This makes Wood Park a handy location for community events, held at the Victor Dyer Music Shell.

This goes for the Wood Park Summer Concert series, taking place all summer, with concerts kicking off at 6:30 pm and boasting a wide range of artists and styles.

The series is organized for families, and you’re encouraged to bring snacks, lawn chairs, blankets, and bug spray.

As well as a playground and picnic areas, there’s a footbridge over the river leading to the local Portuguese Club. You can also head down to the water under the bridge to cast a line or launch your kayak.

6. Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge

visit hudson ma

On the rail trail, just past the American Heritage Museum you’ll enter a National Wildlife Refuge , run by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and one of eight refuges that make up the Eastern Massachusetts National Wildlife Refuge Complex.

Laced with ponds, vernal pools and wetlands, this particular refuge has a mantle of pine and hardwood forest, and is a vital stopover for migratory birds in spring and fall.

One of the compelling things about the 2,230-acre property is that it’s on the site of the Fort Devens-Sudbury Training Annex established at speed in 1942, and with some 50 ammunition bunkers from the period cropping up in the woods.

These add a little mystery to a hiking, biking or cross-country skiing trip, while the abundant water attracts kayakers, with a launch and dock along off White Pond Road.

7. Puzzlescape

On the Assabet River Rail Trail, this award-winning escape room attraction is one of a few businesses to have taken up residence in the converted Hudson Mills complex.

Puzzlescape was founded in 2016 and moved to its current location in 2021, and has a playful and cartoonish feel.

The villain at Puzzlescape is “Pepe La Scuzz”, an evil mastermind that you have to foil at the main room, “The Legend of Pepe”, for 2-6 players and with a choose-your-own ending.

A couple of other rooms available when we compiled this list were the horror-themed Something Wicked (2-8 players), and the entry-level Escape the Cape, in which you have to avoid the traffic on the Bourne and Sagamore Bridges (2-6 players).

This room is a fine intro for young puzzle solvers, as children aged 12 and up can take part without parents.

8. Danforth Falls (Danforth Conservation Area)

visit hudson ma

There’s 80 acres of town-owned woodland in the north of Hudson, managed by the local conservation commission.

The property is on the idyllic Danforth Brook, which runs down the east side and is stocked for fishing every spring. From Lincoln Street you can set off on a flat trail along the brook, tracing it back to a waterfall.

This is most impressive after a spell of heavy rain or in spring after the snow melts. The surrounding property also contains the 450-foot summit of Philips Hill, which has a slightly more challenging trail, with steep and rocky sections carrying you to a scenic western overlook.

9. Rail Trail Flatbread Co.

visit hudson ma

In Hudson’s long directory of endearing local businesses there’s the Rail Trail Flatbread Co. , right across Main St from the New City Microcreamery.

This community-oriented and socially conscious flatbread pizza restaurant opened in 2012. The wood-fired, hand-tossed sourdough pizza is the headline here, with a choice of imaginative varieties (gochujang bbq chicken, spanakopita), including plenty of vegan and gluten options.

Poutine, tacos, burgers (including impossible burgers), mac and cheese, and other comfort food favorites are also on the menu, along with no fewer than 20 draft beer taps.

visit hudson ma

The roll call of awesome independent businesses on Main St continues with this craft brewery , with a large, rustic taproom and a beer garden that might catch you by surprise.

Beer-wise, Medusa is known for its hoppy IPAs, and the core brews are Laser Cat (Imperial IPA), LightRunner (Hazy IPA), Lola (IPA) and Duchovni (Czech Pilsner).

These are the stars, but are also just a few of the many beers on draft, whether your taste runs to malty, hoppy or sour.

There’s live music in the taproom on Friday nights, and the brewery has teamed up with local business Taco Gato, which now operates as a permanent, in-house taqueria for the perfect accompaniment.

11. Honey Pot Hill Orchards

visit hudson ma

Moments away in Stow there’s a family-run farm dating back to 1926, welcoming visitors for a range of activities in the growing and harvest seasons.

You can pick your own fruit at Honey Pot Hill Orchards , beginning in July with blueberries, plums and peaches, ramping up to an extended apple season that runs deep into fall.

There are more than 25 apple varieties growing at the farm, and you can check out a detailed picking schedule before you come.

The farm store stocks all of this fresh produce and much more, including jams and jellies, fresh pressed apple cider and baked goods like apple cider donuts.

Kids will have a great time seeing the farm animals, and you can solve mazes in fall and take a carefree hayride for a perfect day in the countryside.

12. Ferjulian’s Farm

visit hudson ma

Another long-standing agricultural business, Ferjulian’s Farm is family-owned and operated since 1942. On 70 acres, this is the only working farm in Hudson, and the stand is open from Patriot’s Day in April until early December.

The season opens with flowers in the greenhouse, and there are more than 100 varieties of annuals, as well as perennials, vegetables, herbs and hanging baskets.

The farm stand starts selling produce in June, and everything on offer throughout the season at Ferjulians has been hand-picked and tested for flavor.

July through September there’s a PYO flower-cutting garden, and then around early October is the ten-day Sunflower Festival, with some 30,000 blooms as high as five feet.

13. Hudson Farmers’ Market

visit hudson ma

On Tuesday afternoons, mid-June through September, there’s a farmers’ market in front of the Town Hall, right in the heart of downtown Hudson.

As well as this main market, keep your eyes peeled for pop-up markets earlier and later in the year, in April, May, November and December.

Every week the market’s facebook page publishes a list of attending vendors, as well as the live performer as part of the Market Music series.

On a normal week you can expect vendors for seasonal fresh produce, fresh seafood, pasture-raised meats, honey, spices, jams, breads, and sweet baked goods, along with a small contingent of craft vendors.

14. Art in the Hall

As well as hosting the farmers’ market, Hudson’s 19th-century Chateauesque Town Hall also serves as an art gallery.

Since 2004, the River’s Edge Arts Alliance has curated the Art in the Hall exhibitions, promoting the work of artists in the town.

Featuring work by artists in a whole spectrum of disciplines, these shows typically last for a few months and are refreshed several times a year so there will always be something new to check out. The gallery is open during normal working hours and is fully accessible.

15. ArtsFest Hudson

Hudson has an effervescent arts scene, and the simplest way to get an overview is at this festival on the first Saturday in June.

Like many of the events in a town that has reinvented itself, this is a new-ish tradition, but has truly taken off.

Morning until late in the afternoon there are two stages of family-friendly live performances, with an international roster of music artists, dance groups and more.

At the same time, there will be 50+ arts and crafts booths, showcasing the enormous breadth of Hudson’s creative talent. Smaller festival-goers can take part in activities like facepainting and crafts, while the curtain is raised in the morning with a 5K run.

Top 9 Best Things to Do in Hudson Massachusetts

Our travel recommendations are based on personal experiences and research.

You’ll find plenty of things to do in Hudson MA, a small town a little off the beaten path with a great variety of restaurants, recreational activities, and even an impressive history museum.

Downtown Hudson MA

Hudson, Massachusetts is a small, largely bedroom community west of Boston and east of Worcester along Highway 495. It could easily be overlooked as a sleepy and somewhat dull suburban town, but Hudson has experienced sparks of life over the past few years.

Numerous restaurants have recently opened in Hudson, creating a small but growing culinary scene. Add to that an extensive rail trail for cyclists, runners, and walkers parallel to downtown, a community-focused farmer’s market, independent retail shops, and even an exceptional history museum, and you’ll find plenty of things to do in Hudson MA.

Families will find plenty to do here, too. Spend the afternoon at an escape room, roller skating at the local rink, learning about American history, or riding bikes down the Assabet River Rail Trail. Next, it’s easy to grab a bite at many of the local eateries. But most importantly, don’t forget to finish your outing with some of the best ice cream around at the New City Microcreamery.

9 of the best things to do in Hudson MA

So, without further ado, here are nine of the absolute best things to do in Hudson.

Ride the Assabet River Rail Trail

The assabet river rail trail - among the things to do in Hudson MA

One of the more fun things to do in Hudson MA, is to ride the town’s rail trail. This paved trail, formerly railroad tracks, runs parallel to the heart of the downtown and is only a few blocks away.

Because of its proximity to Hudson’s downtown shops and restaurants, many cyclists spend a few hours riding bikes and then grabbing lunch or ice cream.

The Assabet River Rail Trail in Hudson is currently 5.4 miles long, running through Hudson and the neighboring town of Marlborough.

Serious riders can extend their distance by riding 4 miles on roads and then meeting up with the second half of the trail in the town of Stow. The trail continues from here another 3.4 miles north to the South Acton train station.

Wander around Hudson’s downtown

The Haberdash in downtown Hudson MA

( 77 Main Street ) And further down, you’ll stumble upon  Mullahy’s , an artisan cheese shop with other specialty foods, wine, and beer. ( 162 Main Street ).

Get ice cream at the New City Microcreamery

The outside of the New City Microcreamery in Hudson MA

One of the things you  must  do in Hudson MA, is get some ice cream at the  New City Microcreamery .

This isn’t your standard ice cream parlor. The Microcreamery features an ever-revolving list of some of the most unique (but tasty!) flavors around. Recent examples include Baklava, Saffron Apricot Almond, Ruthless (similar to a Baby Ruth candy bar), and newly conceived classics like Mint Chip (made with natural mint), Bourbon Vanilla, and Chocolate.

What’s distinctive about New City Microcreamery is how they make their ice cream. After a refrigerated ice cream base has steeped for 24 hours, it’s frozen using liquid nitrogen. This unique process creates smaller ice crystals, which result in a smoother, creamier texture. ( 28 Main Street )

Visit the American Heritage Museum

History buffs will want to stop at Hudson’s  American Heritage Museum . This museum, mainly focused on U.S. military conflicts, is home to over 100 rare tanks, military vehicles, and artifacts from World Wars I and II and other American conflicts. It delves into the history of significant conflicts from the Revolutionary War to today.

A visit to the American Heritage Museum includes immersive exhibits and experiences, including the ability to purchase tickets to ride in five of the museum’s tanks.

Hours: open daily from 10 AM to 5 PM except for select holidays. Admission for adults is $20, and for children under 12, $10, with special pricing for seniors, veterans, and active duty service members. ( 568 Main Street )

( 33 Main Street )

A relative newcomer to the dining scene in Hudson is  Wild Hare . Located off Main Street, in The Landing at Hudson Mills, Wild Hare has a relaxed yet modern vibe and features delectable dishes, including some of the best breakfast pastries in the area. ( 43 Broad Street # B102 )

Another casual dining option is  Kith and Kin , an American restaurant with a modern flare, serving brunch on the weekends and lunch and dinner every day. ( 40 Washington Street )

This farm was established in 1923 and has been passed down through four generations of the Ferjulian family. It’s known for its fresh produce, including corn, tomatoes, and pumpkins, grown on-site and sold at the farm stand from June through October.

In addition to produce, Ferjulian’s also offers a variety of homemade baked goods, local honey, and other specialty items. Visitors can also enjoy pick-your-own flower opportunities such as tulip picking in the spring and cutting from the farm’s flower garden beginning in July. Ferjulian’s also hosts an annual sunflower festival. ( 7 Lewis Street )

This story is part of MassLive’s Reporter Road Trip series , which in July visited downtown Hudson.

____________

Over the past decade, the town of Hudson has gone from a place with 40 vacant commercial storefronts to being named the home of America’s best Main Street in 2021, beating out over 200 competitors.

From restaurants, shops and cafés to the over eight-mile bike path connecting it with the city of Marlborough, the downtown center has become a distinctive and pedestrian-friendly place to visit.

There’s no shortage of things to do while visiting Hudson, but if you’re new or haven’t been there in awhile, here are 15 things to consider checking out:

Stop by The Landing and shop for vintage denim and antiques at Knotty Pine Design & Consignment

Knotty Pine Design & Consignment sits on the second floor of a former mill now called The Landing at Hudson Mills , filled with cafés, restaurants, businesses and even churches. The Landing can be its own visit and is situated right off the Assabet River Rail Trail.

A country general store meets an upscale vintage dealer, the Knotty Pine has everything you want — and perhaps a lot of what you don’t need.

Prized vendors include a denim barn with $25 overalls and metal artwork. The store sells Hudson Hives , a local honey producer, and is the only Dixie Bell chalk paint seller in a 15-mile radius.

New England Brick Co. makes up the front of the store with collectible Lego items, including retired Star Wars Lego sets for you to marvel at.

The Landing is also home to Wild Hare , a trendy-vibed café, restaurant and brewery and Good Earth Holistic Kitchen , so after picking up some cool collectibles or antiques you can dine downstairs or grab a latte or beer.

Fly above the ground in an aerial hoop

Just a hop skip and jump away from Knotty Pine Design & Consignment is Earth & Aerial Yoga — but this isn’t just your normal yoga studio.

Walking into the light-filled space, aerial hoops hang down from the ceiling.

Yes, you will be swinging through those. Don’t worry if you have never done it before, instructors are trained to teach anyone of any age or skill level.

You can even learn how to do aerial yoga using yoga hammocks. And if heights scare you, they teach regular yoga too.

With around 25 classes taught per week, the experience of floating and twisting through the air is one you won’t have anywhere else in or near Hudson.

Feel like a kid again, try an escape room

In the same mill building is PuzzlEscape , a combination between puzzles and escape rooms.

Meant for families, couples or even friends, PuzzlEscape is a place to have fun and tease your brain. While most time slots are meant for private groups or couples, the first Friday of every month is public and designed for individuals or small groups to meet new teammates.

The organization offers 60 and 90-minute sessions.

New City Microcreamery

Cool down with liquid-nitrogen ice cream

Right in the center of downtown Hudson is New City Microcreamery , a business that can cool you down with just one lick.

Their ice cream is made using a liquid nitrogen freezing method and uses cream from Mapleline Farm in Hadley.

The cream, according to New City, steeps for 24 hours before it’s added to the mixer along with the negative 300-degree liquid nitrogen making it creamier than your average store-bought ice cream.

Wood Park

Listen to free music outdoors

This summer Hudson is putting on a free concert series . Every other Wednesday night Wood Park will sound with different bands playing. Music starts at 6:30 p.m. and goes generally to 8 p.m.

Thursday morning concerts — at 10:30 a.m. — are geared to a younger audience at Cellucci Park.

The list of performers can be found here .

Downtown Maynard

Unwind by canoeing, kayaking or walking along the Assabet River

One of the main attractions for peace and serenity is the Assabet River. Especially in the summer months, when temperatures can get unbearable without an air conditioner, the Assabet River is the perfect place to canoe, kayak or walk along.

There are several places to put a kayak or canoe both in Hudson and up and down the river in neighboring communities. But one of the easiest places to put in is right in Wood Park .

Take in the breeze and listen to the water crackle.

Assabet River Rail Trail

Bike along the Assabet River Rail Trail

What could be better than biking down a trail and watching the town of Hudson pass you by, listening to birds chirping and watching water flowing?

A beautifully paved portion of the rail trail directly connects Marlborough with Hudson. There’s currently a couple of mile gap in the trail before it picks up again in Stow and takes you through Maynard and Acton. It can be used by anyone from bikers to walkers to runners.

Ferjulian's Farm

Ferjulian’s Farm, the only working farm in Hudson, offers over 100 varieties of flowers to cut in their garden. Ferjulian's Farm

Pick your own flowers at Ferjulian’s Farm

Open usually from July 10 to Oct. 15 or the first frost, Ferjulian’s Farm offers more than 200 varities of flowers to pick from across two acres.

Beyond flowers, the 70-acre family-owned and operated farm also sells fruits and vegetables.

The Speakeasy

Hudson's speakeasy, Less Than Greater Than, is covertly located behind a storefront display for a cobbler shop.

Try to find the entrance to Hudson’s speakeasy

Walking down Main Street you’ll notice a window with shoes and a sewing machine, an old-fashioned cobbler shop — if you didn’t know better. Less Than Greater Than is Hudson’s speakeasy run by the same folks who run Rail Trail Flatbread and New City Microcreamery.

With no direct entrance to the shop, customers have to find their way to the cocktail bar where they’ll be served dishes and drinks across a soapstone bar or sit and escape the chaos of the outside world in a dimly-lit dining room.

Downtown Hudson

Buy antiques from England and Ireland to decorate your home

Tucked on the corner of Main Street is Vintage Anthropology , a store where modern decor meets English manner house. As you walk into the store, you’ll stare straight in the eyes of Edison, a taxidermy deer who the owner, Heather Bukovsky, found at a flea market.

The store focuses on providing home decor at an affordable price, selling anything from scrub pine furniture to soy candles to vintage rugs to lighting and artwork. Bukovsky finds her goods at estate sales or by buying anything her interior design clients might not want anymore. The shop also has varied imported pieces from England and Ireland.

While there are taxidermy animals sometimes in the store or leather products, Bukovsky said she focuses on making sure what she buys is environmentally sound, often taking pieces that might be otherwise thrown out and repurposing them.

Down the street from Vintage Anthropology is B. Barton & Company, another antique store that, according to Bukovsky, sells classic and refined antique pieces.

Make your own tea blend at Crosenest Apothecary

Have you ever wanted to become an herbalist but haven’t gotten around to it? Or simply want to play with different teas? Crosenest Apothecary is the perfect place.

The shop is as close as you’ll come to an indoor forest fairy wonderland filled with oriental rugs, wooden pieces and dried goods in glass jars. Plastered on the walls and around the store are over 106 independent artists.

Kinsey Rosene, owner of Crosenest, said she wants everyone to come in and interact with herbalism in a way that feels right for them — even if they don’t identify as a hippie.

One of the unique things you can do in the store is make your own custom tea, blending each tea to create your own original creation. There are also teas available to help with certain conditions such as a sore throat.

Next to Crosenest is the Evergreen Room which opened in January offering apothecary tea and botanically infused cocktails as well as shareable boards filed with local, from-scratch snacks and food.

Visit a new Hudson business and buy a locally-made handbag

Sarah Bertochi Handmade opened in the beginning of April after being an online business for the past six or so years.

While Bertochi said she was afraid of opening up her own brick-and-mortar, she wanted to settle down and sell her own products, such as her screen-printed original wax canvas bags and wellness products.

The store also sells goods from 58 other businesses, with a focus on products that are sustainable and businesses that are diverse, including women-owned businesses.

Grab a wood-fired pizza at Rail Trail Flatbread Co.

Writing about Hudson without mentioning Rail Trail Flatbread Co. would be misleading.

A family-friendly restaurant offering unique spins on food such as burgers, poutine, tacos and mac and cheese, the business has become a staple for Hudson’s downtown.

A good wood-fired pizza is all you need.

If you’re not in the mood for pizza but want some fine outdoor dining, right next door is Welly’s , which arguably has the best outdoor dining patio in town. If neither of those fit your fancy, there are plenty more options with the Horseshoe Pub on South Street or Lalos Mexican Restaurant and Taco Gato on Main. Discover Hudson has a full list here.

While there are many stores that are worth checking out in Hudson, two stores locals rave about are Beyond the Barn Boston — don’t worry, it’s located in Hudson — The Haberdash , Serendipity and Islay’s Terrace Studio and Shop .

Beyond the Barn Boston is a home décor and lifestyle store that also offers design consultations.

Haberdash offers curated, ethically sourced gifts, stationery, small-batch beauty products, handcrafted home products and women’s clothing.

Serendipity is a small gift shop that sells whimsical artwork, handcrafted gifts and jewelry.

Islay’s, which opened last month, is a hybrid shop that focuses on selling books, fiber arts and local and handmade artisan goods. They are the last shop to fill Main Street’s vacant storefronts.

Any of the businesses are worth going to and each are just a walk away.

The city center of the historic town of Hudson, Massachusetts. Editorial credit: Yingna Cai / Shutterstock.com

  • Hudson, Massachusetts

Located in Middlesex County in the northeastern portion of the  US  state of  Massachusetts , Hudson is a town that comes from humble beginnings. Initially, a mill town specializing in shows, the city has grown immensely with many immigrants from  Canada  and  Europe . It has now become a lively yet tight-knit town that is primarily residential with some industries. That being said, while Hudson may not be a mill town anymore, it has much to do along the banks of the prominent Assabet River.

Geography And Climate Of Hudson

Assabet River in Hudson, Massachusetts

The town of Hudson is split nearly centrally by the Assabet River, which arises from  wetlands in Westborough. Surrounding this, the land within Hudson spans a total area of 30.7 sq. km, out of which more than 97% is land. The remaining 3% is water within the town’s limits that is mostly present within the Assabet River. Hudson stands at an average elevation of 263 ft, much lower than the state average of 500 feet. This is primarily due to the town being surrounded by wetlands that roll down in elevation to the Hudson area.

Similar to most of the northeastern part of the state of Massachusets, Hudson experiences a  humid continental climate . Due to this, the town is faced with freezing cold winters while summers are decently warm. Extremes range from -7 °C in the winter to 27 °C in the summers making it an all-around decent place throughout the year. In addition to this, the town gets lots of sunlight year-round and with often partly cloud-covered. When it comes to precipitation, Hudson receives an average of 49 inches of rain per year, which is significantly more than the national average. This is caused due to the town having a humid continental climate and, in combination with the cold winters, also leads to an impressive average snowfall of 48 inches per year.

Brief History Of Hudson

Historical Town Hall of Hudson, Massachusetts

The town of Hudson initially began in 1698 when John Barnes, a European settler, was granted an acre of plantation in the area. On this land, he built a grist mill, followed by a sawmill, and also bridged the central Assabet River to create a route to Lancaster. This began the steady growth of the region with the introduction of several small mills and industries that belonged to both the local Indians as well as the settlers. By the 1800s, the town had been named Feltonville, with its own pub, general store, forge, and many other prominent buildings. This marked a further boost to development, with a major turning point being the Feltonville railroads which were set up with two train stations in the 1850s. At this point, industries were booming left, right, and center as it grew into a well-known industrial town home to many businesses and firms. While this continued until the late 1900s, nearing the 20th century, business began to drop off with various prominent players moving out and industries shutting down. By the mid-2010s, Hudson had shifted to a residential town with only some remnant industries and local businesses leftover from an impressive industrial era.

The Population And Economy Of Hudson

Scenic view of Main Street of the historical town of Hudson, Massachusetts

As per the latest  Census , the population of Hudson is 20,092 inhabitants. This brings the population density across the town to approximately 674 individuals/sq.km, which is significantly higher than the state average of 346 individuals/sq.km. Surprisingly, based on recent Census estimates, Hudson’s population has supposedly dropped by over 1% in the past year, bringing it to under 20,000.

As far as the population divide is concerned, a dominant 51.7% of individuals are female, with the median age being 37 years old. The town’s racial makeup consists primarily of white individuals who make up 91.7% of the population, followed by Hispanics and Latino at 6.7% and Asians at 3.5%. Apart from this, other races, such as Hawaiians, African Americans, etc., all stand at under 1% of the population of Hudson.

The town’s median household income in 2020 was $96,038, with an average house value of a whopping $370,500. That being said, even with extravagant housing rates, Hudson town only has 4.6% of people living below the poverty line, which is less than most of the United States.

Attractions In Hudson

American heritage museum.

One of the prime attractions in the city of Hudson, the American Heritage Museum is housed in a massive 65,000+ sq. ft facility. The military history museum is located near the border of Stow and Hudson in Massachusets and is home to more than 100 artifacts from various historical wars. Throughout the museum, the pieces range from  British , German, and even Russian in origin, with many being large military vehicles such as the German SU-100 Tank Destroyer.
