Watertown Storm Program Overview

The watertown storm baseball program is a select / travel program and is available to a limited number of players from ages 8 to 19.  this is a competitive program that requires substantial commitment on the part of players and their parents; playing time is not guaranteed .

  • The goal of the STORM program is to develop players to play at the highest level possible and to ensure a positive and fun environment for your athlete to develop.
  • Players must reside in Watertown or attend a school in Watertown. If you do not meet these criteria, you may contact the WYBA President to determine eligibility
  • Player Evaluations take place in late summer.  Teams are selected and player notifications are mailed within several weeks of the tryout (players selected to a team are required to submit a non-refundable deposit to reserve a roster spot)
  • One or Two Teams per age group depending on the numbers AND evaluations
  • (U8, U9, U10, U11, U12, U13, U14, U16, U17 and U19)
  • Camps and Clinics are made available in November / December as part of the Storm Program FREE of charge.
  • Indoor workouts begin in January/February when we start to build the foundation for a successful season. Players are expected to make the majority of their team's indoor workouts.
  • Teams play 1-3 league games per week vs. teams throughout southeastern Wisconsin from mid-April through the end of July. (50% of the games involve travel to other communities). Teams also play 3-4 weekend tournaments.  Teams play from 25 to 35 games in a season.
  • Travel to other communities is required
  • Time commitment is typically one time a week in January and February twice a week in March and April and 3 times a week, or more, in May, June and July.
  • Parents and players participate and volunteer for the Storm Armageddon Tournament which takes place in June or July depending on Age Group. This is the program's significant fundraising event -- Parents may choose from various responsibilities throughout the weekend. Participation is mandatory for parents.
  • Costs are determined each year, but generally are around $250 plus a $150 volunteer deposit.

Travel Team Information (11 - 16 Year Olds)

Watertown Mayer Little League fields travel teams at the 11-16 year old age levels that play in the Crow River Youth Baseball League.  Each team will play approximately 12-14 league games along with the potential for tournament play on weekends.  Games are on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 6:30 pm.

Tier 1 tournament teams allow players to have travel experience by playing in weekend tournaments.  Teams may play in up to two tournaments and the league tournament.  Additional tournaments, including the State tournament are at the discretion of the team’s coaches and require additional fees beyond the Tier 1 travel fee.

Tier 2 teams allow players to have travel experience by playing in the Crow River Youth Baseball league and the league tournament.

Birth Date Cutoff The birth date cutoff is May 1, 2023.  The team (age level) for which a player is eligible is the same as the player’s age on that date.  At the discretion of the Little League Board a player may play up with his grade level, but a player may not play down on a younger team for any reason.  A copy of the child’s birth certificate must be supplied to the child’s head coach at the first practice or pre-season meeting.

Registration Fees The initial registration fee of $195.00 covers the team’s expenses for participation in league games, umpires, equipment and field maintenance.  The initial registration fee is collected at the time of registration.  If a player is selected to play on a tournament team an additional fee of $80.00 will be payable online to pay the entry fee for tournaments.

Parents will be contacted no later than May 1st with their child’s team placement.  If your child is placed on one of the tier 1 tournament teams, it is expected that your child will pay an additional fee which shall be payable online prior to the beginning of the season or a uniform will not be issued to your child.

Coaches WE NEED COACHES!  Please volunteer to be a head coach or an assistant coach via your registration form.

  • Note: Once you select an Age Division and save your team, you cannot change this yourself. You must contact us to change it.
  • Each year, teams are required to make a new team for the new season which runs (9/1 to 8/31).
  • The 2024 season runs from 9/1/23 to 8/31/24.
  • Whatever the player's physical age is on 8/31 is their playing age for the full season which runs 9/1 to the following 8/31.
  • When you create your new team if you choose to copy over players from the previous year's team it will only copy over players that are age-eligible under the new rules.
  • See full details  HERE.

Class/Strength

PlayFPN uses this information to create tournaments or divisions within a tournament or to assist in pool play scheduling.

  • Note: Once you select a Class/Strength and save your team, you cannot change this yourself. You must contact us to change it.
  • A - Any team considered to be the highest-level competitive travel team regionally. If your team is normally in or should be in contention to win each tournament you enter and you beat the "better" teams in your state, and you have multiple front-line pitchers, then you should consider yourself an "A" team. A small percentage of teams qualify for A.
  • B - Any team considered to be solid but average to above average travel team. If your team is occasionally in or should be in contention to win a tournament you enter and you are competitive with most teams like you in your state, and you have good but not overwhelming pitching, then you should consider yourself a "B" team. The majority of teams qualify for B.
  • C - Any team considered to be an entry-level or novice travel team with kids new to travel softball and lacks the experience and number of skilled players and pitchers to compete with “A” and “B” teams.  Also, any team that typically plays in a local league or town league or a team that might only play in one or two tournaments a year is considered a "C" team. A small percentage of teams qualify for C.
  • FPN reserves the right to adjust your strength based on your results in our events or external events.

This event does not offer Livestreaming.

Pool Play Ranking Criteria

  • Total Number of Wins, followed by
  • Winning Percentage , followed by
  • Average Runs Allowed (total runs allowed / games played), followed by
  • Average Runs Scored (total runs scored / games played), followed by
  • Season Points that are earned prior to the event being played, followed by
  • Date/time the team registered in the system for the season (Ascending).
  • Teams A, B, and C are tied for the Total Number of Wins. No Head-to-Head is used and the system moves to Winning Percentage.
  • Teams A, B, and C are still tied at Winning Percentage. No Head-to-Head is used and the system moves to Average Runs Allowed.
  • Team C allowed an average of 2 runs. Teams A and B are tied allowing an average of 3 runs. Team C is seeded ahead of teams A and B.
  • Since teams A and B are the only 2 teams remaining and are tied at Average Runs Allowed, Head-to-Head is looked at between those two teams only.
  • If teams A and B never played each other, the system moves on to the next criteria in the tiebreaker chain, Average Runs Scored.
  • However, if teams A and B played each other, Head-to-Head is used and the winner of the Head-to-Head game is advanced ahead of the loser of the Head-to-Head game in the final seedings.
  • Teams that move ahead via Head-to-Head are noted in the seeding table with an asterisk.

In the case of teams that play an unequal number of pool games due to a situation such as weather, each criterion is always an average (ex: total runs allowed divided by the number of games played). This is how we can most fairly deal with a situation where the weather does not allow all teams to play the same number of games. However, the first criterion is important as teams with a higher number of wins, but an identical winning percentage, will be placed ahead in the seedings.

In the case where a team plays an extra pool game above the norm due to an uneven number of teams in 3-game pool play, their worst result is removed from the standings. The game will count for the opponent but not for the team that had its result removed. Head-to-head will be nullified for a team whose results were removed.

  • By entering your team into the "Penciled In List", your team is registered but not officially accepted into the event.
  • Other teams that enter and pay, or other teams on the "Penciled In List" that do pay, will jump ahead of the teams on the "Penciled In List".
  • A team on the "Penciled In List" is not counted against the total number of available team slots in an event. Only paid teams are counted against the available team slots in an event.
  • The "Penciled In List" negates the need for a waitlist, as unpaid teams can no longer block a paid entry into an event.
  • To pay later for an event, go to the Team Dashboard and click the Pay button. However, if the event is full with paid teams, you will not be able to pay and enter but you can remain on the "Penciled In List" in case a team drops out. You can also choose to withdraw from the event, by clicking the Withdraw button.
  • Pay Now to guarantee your entry.

What Our Players Say

Baseball Instruction

My son did private lessons with the owner Jack. He started off not even able to field or catch the ball at a consistent rate (he's 8). Jack, in short time, taught him both and hitting as well and my son is now doing amazing! Also Jack knows how to work with younger kids, my son had the best time with him. Jack was able to balance firm instruction with a fun attitude. I can't say enough good things about our experience.

Baseball Lessons

I wanted to share that today Oliver had his best game at the plate in some time, going 2 for 3 with a walk, a line shot home run over the center field fence and a line drive single to left. He is grinning ear to ear and is feeling much better about his summer season. It's obviously no coincidence. His two sessions with Pete have been great for him.

Lilly Jacobsen, Castlewood — The Warrior catcher not only handled Horn's pitches but also went 4-for-10 at the plate with a double.

Jefferson County Dairy Parade to take place Friday on Watertown's Washington Street

Jun. 6—WATERTOWN — Come 7 p.m. Friday, Washington Street in Watertown will be packed full of people celebrating all things dairy for the annual Jefferson County Dairy Parade.

The parade will begin at Watertown High School and proceed down Washington Street before making a left hand turn onto Clinton Street where it'll wrap up.

Jay Matteson, Jefferson County Agriculture coordinator and deputy CEO of Jefferson County Economic Development, said there are 65 entries into the parade, a number that might be the highest in the parade's history.

Eight high school marching bands, including one from Oswego County, will also be taking part in the parade.

Free items will be available during the parade including ice cream samples and milk until supplies run out. The milk will be available at the Stewart's on Washington Street.

Before the parade starts, Northern Blend Chorus will perform beginning at 6:45 p.m. After introductions, the national anthem will be performed and then the parade will begin.

"This is a celebration," Matteson said. "It's a celebration where we bring agriculture and the people of Jefferson County together to celebrate what agriculture is."

Matteson said that agriculture is a $1.7 billion industry throughout Jefferson, Lewis, St. Lawrence and Oswego counties.

"This is our opportunity to highlight all of that in a fun, informal way, and to allow the agriculture community and the public at large to come together for a night of celebration," he said. "It is very important to us."

Dairy is the biggest sector of the agriculture business locally, Matteson said.

Planning for next year's parade will begin in a week or two and requests for closing down roads go out in December. Matteson said it is mostly a six-month process.

"One of the things I enjoy doing the most is producing events," he said. "At 7 p.m. on Friday when I step out onto the road and bring the first entry out onto the road, I can watch down the parade route and see the little kids run up to the side of the street and everybody gets excited."

Matteson said he also enjoys seeing the parade from the broadcast platform once he is done in the parade.

He is urging drivers to not run the barricades, as the last three years people have been cutting through various parades.

"People really need to not do that. Drive around the parade route, it's not that far out of the way," he said. "So that we're not putting anybody in danger."

Roads will begin to close at 6 p.m. Friday.

Those looking for the latest information can check the parade Facebook page.

USA Baseball Reveals 2024 Golden Spikes Award Finalists

CARY, N.C. – Travis Bazzana (Oregon State), Charlie Condon (Georgia), and Hagen Smith (Arkansas) were named finalists for the 2024 Golden Spikes Award presented by Chinook Seedery today by USA Baseball. This year marks the 46th edition of the Golden Spikes Award, which annually honors the top amateur baseball player in the nation who best exhibits exceptional on-field ability and exemplary sportsmanship.

The 46th Golden Spikes Award will be presented on June 22 at 7:00 p.m. ET (6:00 p.m. CT) on ESPN ahead of Game 1 of the College World Series finals.

“It is a tremendous honor to name Travis, Charlie, and Hagen finalists for this year’s Golden Spikes Award,” said USA Baseball CEO/Executive Director Paul Seiler . “By every measure, these three student-athletes exemplify the best of the best of amateur baseball and are extremely deserving of this honor. We are looking forward to naming our forty-sixth winner of the Golden Spikes Award and adding another great player to the storied history of this award.”

One of the top infielders in the nation, Oregon State’s Travis Bazzana has cemented himself in the Beavers’ record book in 2024. Bazzana became Oregon State’s all-time leader in hits and home runs during the campaign, blasting a Pac-12 most 28 homers so far this season. Bazzana currently ranks second in the country in walks (74), on-base percentage (.575), slugging percentage (.937), and OPS (1.512), leading the Pac-12 in all of those categories. The Pac-12 Player of the Year, Bazzana’s .415 batting average is good for fourth-best in the nation and top in the conference, and he also leads the Pac-12 and ranks top 10 in the country in runs (84) and total bases (193). Bazzana has hit multiple home runs in seven games in 2024–including five blasts in a two-game span on May 5 and 6–and has driven in at least three runs on 10 separate occasions. The three-time Pac-12 Player of the Week and Corvallis Regional MVP has also stolen 16 bases for the Beavers this season. Bazzana becomes the fourth Golden Spikes Award finalist from Oregon State, joining Michael Conforto (2014), Adley Rutschman (2019), and Cooper Hjerpe (2022). He is looking to become the second Golden Spikes Award winner in program history, joining Rutschman.

Georgia’s Charlie Condon set the BBCOR-era home run record with 36 blasts and counting in 2024 en route to being named the SEC Player of the Year. The redshirt sophomore sits atop the national leaderboard in several statistical categories, including home runs, batting average (.445), hits (98), slugging percentage (1.036), total bases (228), and OPS (1.602). Condon leads the SEC and ranks sixth nationally with 82 runs scored and sits in the top three in the conference in doubles (20), on-base percentage (.566), and RBIs (77). He has seven multi-home run games in 2024 and homered in eight consecutive contests from April 26-May 9, which is one home run short of the NCAA record most consecutive games with a longball. Entering the NCAA Super Regional round, Condon is just four homers shy of the SEC single-season record and his 61 career blasts put him in the conference’s top 10 all-time in just his second season. Condon was recently named to the NCAA Athens Regional All-Tournament Team after batting .500 (5-for-10) with a home run, two RBIs, and five walks to help lead the Bulldogs to a Super Regional appearance. He is the fifth all-time Golden Spikes Award finalist from the University of the Georgia and the first since Gordon Beckham in 2008. Condon would be the first Golden Spikes Award winner in Bulldogs’ history.

SEC Pitcher of the Year Hagen Smith was at the forefront of Arkansas’ rotation and atop the national leaderboard all season long in 2024. Smith currently leads the country with a .144 batting average against while striking out a nation-most 17.25 batters per nine innings. His 161 total strikeouts are second-most in the country and best in the SEC, while his 2.04 ERA paced the conference and was fourth-best in the nation. Additionally, Smith owned a 0.89 WHIP in 2024, which ranks second in the conference and fifth in the country. The junior had a 1.35 conference ERA–which was nearly two full runs lower than the next best ERA–and struck out 110 batters in 60.0 innings of conference play, the most in the SEC. The all-time strikeout leader in program history, Smith had 11 games with double-digit strikeouts in 2024, including a 17-punchout game against Oregon State in February. He allowed zero runs in eight of his 16 outings, finishing the season with a 9-2 record. Smith, who was named SEC Pitcher of the Week twice in 2024, becomes the fourth Golden Spikes Award finalist in program history. He would be the third winner in the Hogs’ storied history, joining Andrew Benintendi (2015) and Kevin Kopps (2022).

This year marks the fifth time since 2018 that the SEC has featured multiple Golden Spikes Award finalists. Overall, the SEC boasts 10 Golden Spikes Award winners, the most of any conference in the nation. The Pac-12 has a finalist for the second time in three seasons (Hjerpe in 2022) and is looking for its SEC-tying 10th all-time Golden Spikes Award winner.

LSU’s Dylan Crews is the most recent winner of the Golden Spikes Award, earning the prestigious honor after helping lead the Tigers to a College World Series title in 2023. He joined an elite group of recent winners including Ivan Melendez (2022), Kopps (2021), Rutschman (2019), Andrew Vaughn (2018), Brendan McKay (2017), Kyle Lewis (2016), Benintendi (2015), A.J. Reed (2014), Kris Bryant (2013), Mike Zunino (2012), Trevor Bauer (2011), Bryce Harper (2010), Stephen Strasburg (2009), Buster Posey (2008), and David Price (2007).

Historically, Golden Spikes Award winners have gone on to have tremendous success in the Major Leagues. Of the 45 previous winners, six have earned Rookie of the Year honors, including Lewis in 2020. Additionally, three have won the Cy Young Award, three were named MVP, and 11 have won a World Series championship as a player or manager, combining for 18 championships. Twenty-one previous winners have also been named to at least one All-Star Game roster as a player or manager, combining for 62 total selections.

A final ballot will be sent to the Golden Spikes Award voting body consisting of national baseball media, select professional baseball personnel and USA Baseball staff, and the previous winners of the award, totaling a group of more than 100 voters. From Wednesday, June 5, to Monday, June 10, the voting body will cast their final vote for the Golden Spikes Award winner and fan voting will simultaneously be open on GoldenSpikesAward.com.
