While the setting is dramatic, the atmosphere is positively laissez-faire, so feel free to do whatever you wish. Tour notorious Alcatraz. See predators like the sharks that live in the surrounding waters at the Aquarium of the Bay. Observe the bonsai in the Japanese Tea Garden in emerald-green Golden Gate Park. Waiting to board your cruise ship is so exciting, if you have some time to spare before you board, why not make the most of your time in San Francisco and start your cruise vacation early? In this  San Francisco Cruise Port Guide , I share some ideas of things to do before or after your cruise.

San Francisco Cruise Port

The port of San Francisco is a popular West Coast embarkation port for many cruises out of the United States. Cruise ship itineraries from San Francisco visit Alaska, Hawaii and Mexico, with around 80 cruise calls each year. Some of the largest cruise companies like Princess Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Carnival Cruise Lines, Celebrity Cruises, Oceania Cruises, Holland America Line and Royal Caribbean use the port’s cruise terminals.

The cruise port terminal is located in west end San Francisco between Fisherman’s Wharf and the Bay Bridge at Pier 27, also known as James R. Herman Cruise Terminal (and Pier 35 occasionally).

How to get to the Cruise Port

From San Francisco International Airport, you’re looking at around a 45 minute drive to  Pier 27  on the Embarcadero. Be aware that traffic from San Francisco airport can get pretty busy along this road (especially during rush hour) so make sure you leave plenty of time to arrive. A taxi ride will cost approximately $60-70 but Uber and Lyft operate in San Francisco and are likely to be a cheaper option.

If you are driving to the port, the closest and most affordable long term parking is IMPark on Francisco Road. The  Waterfront Parking Lot  at 80 Francisco Road offers long term cruise passenger parking for $20 per day. There is a short term car park at Pier 27 but this is not available on days when cruise ships are docked.

Rental car services can be found near Fisherman’s Wharf, which is easy walking distance to the San Francisco cruise terminal.

Places to eat near San Francisco cruise port

The first place you will come across near Pier 27 is the Pier 23 Café but be aware that it doesn’t open for breakfast. Fog City is conveniently located across the Embarcadero from Pier 27 and offers some great lunch options including salads, fried chicken and wood-fire pizzas. If you’re in search of a sophisticated setting for a pre-cruise lunch, Hillstone restaurant is located near Pier 33.

If you head to the San Francisco Ferry Building , (6 minute taxi ride), you will have a good choice of places to eat and get coffee. We enjoyed brunch at the Boulettes Larder but there are so many great options here including bagels, doughnuts, Vietnamese and hot sandwiches.

Embarkation

Generally, embarkation at the San Francisco cruise port starts between 11.00am and 1.00pm. Timings will also depend on the cruise line. With new embarkation procedures post-Coronavirus, it will be even more important that cruise passengers stick to allocated embarkation slots.

One of the most spectacular things about cruising from San Francisco is passing under the Golden Gate Bridge. This is a sailaway you cannot afford to miss! Whatever time you embark the ship, make sure you are on the lido deck for the sailaway party. It’s certainly a ‘hold your breath’ moment as the ship sails under the bridge.

Top Things to do near San Francisco Cruise Port

If you have the time, I’d definitely recommend spending a day or two in San Francisco to explore the city’s nearby attractions. We stayed for an extra two nights after our cruise and made the most of our time.

1. Visit Alcatraz

1.25 miles off shore from San Francisco is Alcatraz Island. Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary housed notorious prisoners such as Al Capone, George Celino Barnes (Machine Gun Kelly) and the Frank Morris (who escaped in 1962).

Book your tickets for directly from the official Alcatraz website that includes a boat trip to the island with entry to the buildings. Boats depart from Pier 33 on the hour with return trips running 20 minutes later.

I’d recommend booking for the morning or early afternoon. We made the mistake of taking the 3pm boat to Alcatraz, which meant we had no choice but to take the last boat to San Francisco at 5.40pm. Give yourself plenty of time to explore and speak to the staff, who can provide interesting insights into life on Alcatraz.

We found ourselves quietly trying to imagine what life must have been like as an inmate in Alcatraz. The buildings are left as they were, as if one day they just packed up and left.

2. See the Sea Lions at Pier 39

To see the California Sea Lions, head to Pier 39 in the Fisherman’s Wharf area. They can be found sunbathing in big groups on the docks and draw quite a crowd of onlookers.

It’s thought that the sea lions were initially attracted to the docks because of its plentiful herring and protective environment. They’ve now become ‘sea-lebrities’ of San Francisco.

Pier 39 is a hub of activity with shops, bars and restaurants so whilst your there, I’d recommend eating at one of the restaurants at the end of the pier.

We enjoyed some of the best chicken wings ever at Hana Zen Sushi and Yakitori Restaurant . It also has some unobstructed views of the Bay so ask if there is a table by the window available when you arrive.

3. Eat Clam Chowder from a Sourdough Bread Bowl

San Francisco is well-known for serving clam chowder in sourdough bread bowls. My advice would be to avoid the shiny Boudin Bakery Cafes and head to the clam chowder and crab stalls on Jefferson Street, at the foot of Taylor Street, in Fisherman’s Wharf. This is a no frills option but it’s the real deal.

4. Ride a Trolley

A historic symbol of San Francisco is the cable cars system that transports passengers up and down the steep hills. One-way fares cost around $7 per person. The California Line that is around an 18 minute walk from the cruise terminal.

This cable car map by  SF To Do  is really useful for planning your trip. If you have time, it’s a great way to travel.

Our hotel was nearest to the Powell/Hyde cable car line and so we opted to get on at Market Street. It was a novel experience as we weren’t quite sure how it worked but you can simply get on and pay the cable car operator.

5. Visit Chinatown and Little Italy

You can easily combine a visit to Chinatown and North Beach (Little Italy) by foot during your time in San Francisco. Both are within a short walk of each other. We opted to take our own route and stop when we came across interesting shops and sights but you can take organised food tours.

Seek out the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory in Ross Alley, where they make up to 10,000 fortune cookies a day!

6. The Crookedest Street in the World

Lombard Street is in fact not the ‘crookedest street in the world’ or San Francisco but is still a great landmark to visit to watch the cars snake from side to side. It has 8 hairpin turns that attracts hundred of drivers each hour.

You can easily incorporate the view of Lombard Street on your visit to North Beach. In all honesty, we accidentally came across it during our walk around Chinatown and Little Italy. If you’re around that area, it’s worth seeing from the lower section, looking upwards.

Final Thoughts

San Francisco is an exciting West Coast cruise port in Northern California that justifies a pre-cruise or post-cruise stay. The city is very accommodating of cruise ship passengers because the cruise ship calls are important to the city’s economy.

Getting in and out of the cruise port is relatively easy. Just leave yourself plenty of time to avoid rushing.

There are a number of events that take place throughout the year. We happened to visit during Fleet Week, which celebrates the Bay Area’s naval tradition and we were fortunate to see the Blue Angels air show. The weekend also coincided with Columbus Day so the streets were extra busy but the parade was a welcome surprise.

I’d advise that you wear comfortable shoes for the inevitable amount of walking that you’ll do. The area can be quite windy so a lightweight jacket or jumper is advisable. As soon as the sun starts to go down, it can get a bit chilly.

Whatever you do, do not miss the sailaway from San Francisco to experience passing under the Golden Gate Bridge!

I have never been on a cruise before. Would love to do it someday. This is such a detailed guide. If I have ever been there, Would definitely visit the Alcatraz prison. 

Great overview of the port and things to do nearby. I had a cruise planned for last summer, my first one, and that unfortunately got cancelled. I am looking forward to when the cruise lines reopen. There also seems like there are so many great things to do nearby. I haven’t made it to San Francisco yet, but I have always wanted to visit Alcatraz Island. I also wouldn’t mind watching the sea lions at Pier 39, my daughter would love that.

An excellent guide for people heading to SF for a cruise. We are locals but so far we haven’t done any cruises from here. Not sure why but the cruises we have done have always been somewhere else. I think someday we will try either a cruise to Alaska or Mexico.

It’s definitely true that people coming here should give themselves a lot of time for transitioning from one place to another. The time from the airport to Pier 27 is usually about 20 minutes or so without traffic but you maybe did it during the rush hour. But always better to be safe than sorry what comes to timings at the Bay Area.

I have not been to San Francisco but now all these interesting things make me tempt to book tickets. I loved the trolley ride, Little Italy and China Town visit. Where Do Cruise Ships Dock In San Francisco?

When it comes to fantastic travel experiences, few things match standing on the deck of a massive cruise ship as it sails underneath the Golden Gate Bridge before docking in everyone’s favorite destination city. If you are lucky enough for that to happen at sunset, it will be an experience that you won’t forget. The short cruise between the bridge and the docking site at The Port of San Francisco at Pier 27 holds its own set of thrills, but the fun really starts once you dock.

Cruise ships arriving at the Port of San Francisco dock at the James R. Herman Cruise Terminal at Pier 27, found on The Embarcadero along the city’s waterfront, midway between the famous attraction Fisherman’s Wharf to the northwest and the Bay Bridge to the southeast.

The Cruise Terminal acts as a “ground zero” for passengers arriving for a few days or just overnight. Unlike many cities whose cruise ship docking sites are far from city centers, the Cruise Terminal has the city at its doorstep.

What Is the James R. Herman Cruise Terminal?

Opened in 2014, the James R. Herman Cruise Terminal is a welcoming city entryway for first-timers and experienced cruisers alike. The fantastic views of the Bay Bridge, the city skyline, and Telegraph Hill give visitors a tantalizing hint of what’s to come. From there, passengers are literally steps away from seeing those sites in person.

Attractions Close to Pier 27

Thanks to cabs and ride shares, visitors are within striking distance of many attractions far from the Pier 27 area, like the Golden Gate Bridge and Ocean Beach. But those who prefer to walk will find so much to do and see, there will be no need for a car. For our purposes, we’ll examine sites in the Pier 27 area that are easily reached by foot.

Just a stroll in either direction along the Embarcadero offers an amazing amount of popular attractions, hotels , pubs, and restaurants with magnificent views. Beyond that, it’s a short and scenic stroll to downtown, Fisherman’s Wharf , Oracle Park , Chinatown , and the hugely popular North Beach and South of Market (SOMA) neighborhoods.

The Ferry Building

Less than a mile walk from Pier 27 in the southwestern direction, the Ferry Building is one of the city’s great iconic structures. It’s always alive, with visitors taking in its many specialty shops and eateries or workers rushing to and from the many commuter ferries that dock here.

You can’t miss the 245-foot-tall clock tower and its four clock dials, each 22 feet in diameter, especially at night. The clock tower bells play a version of Westminster Chimes on the hour and half-hour.

Opened in 1898, the Ferry Building acts as the Embarcadero’s central hub. It’s especially popular on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday when it hosts a large farmer’s market that’s become well-known as one of the country’s best, featuring outstanding local farm products and artisan foods and crafts. The Ferry Building farmer’s market hosts 40,000 visitors every week.

Takin’ It to The Streets

Depending on how extended your stay is, it’s always a good idea to hit the streets early, and visitors will find no shortage of coffee shops and brunch spots. Or visit the Ferry Building, where you can grab something quick, sustainable, and locally grown.

Strolling northwest along the Embarcadero is a great way to burn off those calories. Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Wharf are a short walk away, and you can spend hours exploring these two popular tourist destinations.

Along the way, you’ll pass Pier 33, where you can catch a ferry to Alcatraz , while you can board the Blue and Gold Fleet of bay excursion ferries at Pier 47 in the heart of Fisherman’s Wharf. Ghirardelli Square , along with the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park and The Cartoon Art Museum , all reward visitors who make it to Fisherman’s Wharf’s northern end.

Union Square and the Financial District

You can head straight up Market Street into the bustling shopping district at Union Square from the Ferry Building. From there, you can eat your way through Chinatown and the Italian enclave of North Beach, or explore the Financial District where you can take a selfie with the iconic Transamerica Pyramid or shop to your heart’s content at the Embarcadero Center .

Also in the Financial District is the recently opened public rooftop park at the Salesforce Transit Center that offers locals and visitors a peaceful green oasis in the middle of the city. Foodies will find no shortage of restaurants in the downtown area, everything from Michelin-starred fine dining to Mom and Pop burrito shops and everything in between.

Two blocks south of Market Street on Third Street is the magnificent San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), which is an absolute must-visit for art lovers. One block from SFMOMA is the popular Jewish Contemporary Museum and the pretty green space of the Yerba Buena Gardens , which is a great place to relax and mingle with locals.

Southwest and Beyond

Head southwest from Pier 27, and you’ll find even more to experience. Walk bayside along the Embarcadero, and you’ll pass the Exploratorium that’s popular with kids and adults alike, the Ferry Building, Rincon Park and the bow and arrow sculpture known as “ Cupid’s Span ,” the Bay Bridge, and it’s impressive LED light display, South Beach Park and the Harbor Marina , China Basin , Oracle Park (home of the baseball team, the San Francisco Giants ), and the newly opened entertainment and sports venue Chase Center .

Along the way, you’ll see creative and quirky displays of public art, dog-friendly green spaces, neighborhood restaurants, and coffee shops. You can also enjoy the expansive views of the San Francisco Bay, which is always busy with boats and massive cargo tankers coming and going from the Port of Oakland just across the bay. The walk along the Embarcadero is entirely flat, which makes it easily accessible to strollers and wheelchairs.

Where Are the Closest Airports?

Some cruise passengers will be flying home after ending their vacations in San Francisco. Fortunately, Pier 27 is close to the city’s two nearest airports. San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is about 14 miles from Pier 27, and Oakland International Airport (OAK) is located approximately 20 miles across the bay. From ride share to taxis to public transportation, visitors have many options for getting to the two airports. Let’s break them down.

• Taxis: Those taking taxis to SFO from Pier 27 can expect to pay upward to $65 for the 20-minute ride (depending on the time of day). Cab fares to OAK can run as high as $85. A tip of 15% is customary, and most taxis will accept credit cards.
• Ride Share: Rideshares are a much cheaper option. UberX charges around $33 for the ride from Pier 27 to SFO, while Lyft charges $32 for the same trip. To Oakland, UberX charges $40-50 while Lyft can run around $48.
• Public Transportation: The cheapest and most convenient way to get to both airports from the city is by BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) commuter subway cars. The fare from the city to SFO is only $9.65, while the fare to Oakland runs $10.20. A one-way ride to both airports is about twenty minutes.

Visitors will find a BART station at the Embarcadero Station at 298 Market Street in the city’s Financial District, a short, 10-minute walk from Pier 27. The 1998-built (as "R Two") Oceania Regatta cruise ship is the fleet's second R-Class boat, with sisterships Nautica, Insignia  and Sirena (Ocean Princess) . Oceania Cruises Regatta ship was drydock refurbished in 2019 (September) as part of the OceaniaNEXT fleet renovation project (2019-2020).

The vessel (IMO number 9156474) is currently Marshall Islands /France- flagged (MMSI 538001664) and registered in Majuro .

History - construction and ownership

Oceania Cruises is a US passenger shipping company and luxury travel brand owned by NCLH-Norwegian (shipowner), Between April 2007 and September 2014, the company (as part of "Prestige Cruise Holdings") was owned by Apollo Management LP - one of the world's largest private investment equity funds. Since September 2014, Oceania and the sister company RSSC-Regent are owned by NCLH - acquired at a total cost of USD 3 billion. Oceania ships offer luxury cruises with relatively shorter itineraries, as well as Around The World voyages up to 180 days in length.

The 700-passenger ship Regatta was built as one of a series of 8 vessels for Renaissance Cruises. The cruise ship ceased operations in late 2001 and became the first of 3 identical vessels launched by Oceania. When Regatta debuted, her smoking policy (or non-smoking policy) was the stiffest in the industry and remained so for 3 years. At the time, there were only two sections onboard in which passengers could smoke: a small place forward of the swimming pool on the starboard side and a small, indoor space at the aft of one of the vessel's lounges. Cruisers caught lighting up on their verandas or in their cabins were politely reminded - once - that this was not available and was then threatened with unceremonious debarkation if continued. This restrictive policy is more general now, and the fact that Oceania cruise ships still have a smoking zone in one of the lounges makes it one of the more liberal cruise lines.

Decks and Cabins

Oceania Regatta staterooms (349 total, in 16 grades) include 62 Suites, 170 Balcony, 89 Oceanview (including 14 single-occupancy) and 28 Inside cabins. Most staterooms (66%) are Balcony and sized 175 ft2 / 16 m2. Most cabin balconies are smaller (sized 45 ft2 / 4 m2).

The largest accommodations are the Owners Suites (620 ft / 58 m2 plus 345 ft2 / 32 m2 terrace).

The boat has 11 decks , of which 9 are passenger-accessible and 5 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Regatta guests take advantage of the flexibility of 4 open-seating dining venues. The Grand Dining Room serves Continental cuisine. it is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Alternative, reservations-required options are Toscana, which offers gourmet Italian food, and the steak house Polo Grill. The buffet restaurant Terraces serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It is transformed into "Tapas on the Terrace" at night for a relaxed atmosphere. All dining venues have bars, and there is no cover charge. In addition, a poolside grill offers hamburgers, sandwiches and salads at lunchtime. There is also a pizzeria in the buffet area. The observation lounge Horizons serves afternoon tea. Room service is available 24 hours.

At the time of its onset, Oceania's management had clear objectives: to offer luxury service without becoming a luxurious cruise line. Oceania Regatta Wiki

Oceania Regatta cruise ship is the line's second vessel of the Renaissance-class along with her fleet mates  Insignia ,  Nautica  and  Sirena (Ocean Princess) . Of this marine vessel class are also the Azamara ships Journey , Pursuit , Quest and Onward .

MS Regatta was ordered and operated as "R-Two" by Renaissance Cruises between 1998-2002. After the company's bankruptcy, R-Two was bought and transferred to Oceania. She sailed as "Insignia" (2002-2003) and as "ms Regatta" (since 2003).

On September 2, 2014, NCLH-Norwegian purchased the company "Prestige Cruise Holdings" (owner of Oceania and RSSC-Regent ) for USD 3,025 billion, thus becoming the official owner of all vessels in both fleets.

Apollo Group provides all Oceania ships with the entire onboard hotel product and services. This includes administration, food staff (preparation and serving), housekeeping staff, also the vessel's provisioning and crewing. Other cruise lines served by Apollo are Thomson UK (Marella Cruises)  and  RSSC-Regent .

The line's owner NCLH-Norwegian received the Government's permission to operate cruises to Cuba from the USA, with three Oceania ships - Marina (starting at the end of 2016), Regatta (starting in 2017) and  Insignia (Nov-Dec 2017). Oceania ships operated a variety of itineraries, including a circumnavigation of Cuba (with stops in ports  Cienfuegos and Havana ) and also visiting Cuba as part of some Panama Canal transition cruises .

Oceania Regatta refurbishment 2019 review

Regatta ship's OceaniaNEXT refurbishment 2019 (September 7-23) in Vancouver Canada resulted in the following changes:

• New public spaces include open-floor design Lobby with Reception Hall (lower level) and Upper Hall (2nd level). They are connected via Grand Staircase (decorated with railings and balustrades) and feature a large crystal chandelier (with hanging pieces of hand-painted glass).
• Grand Dining Room (aft on Deck 5) received new premium dining furniture (leather chairs with metallic bronze threading) and new crystal chandelier.
• Martinis (piano bar lounge on Deck 5) was redesigned, new silver-white marble bar top and walnut paneling were added.
• All staterooms were completely overhauled (redesigned and refurnished) and upgraded with custom-made furniture, polished wood, stone finishes, designer accessories, smart HDTVs (interactive / infotainment system with movies-on-demand and Internet), USB ports, LED lighting.
• All cabin bathrooms were overhauled and received new tiling, surfaces, fixtures, designer accessories, vanities, glass shower enclosures.
• Penthouse-Vista-Owner suite bathrooms were enlarged and upgraded with Carrara marble, onyx and polished granite tops.

Oceania's 2018-2022 drydock projects (ships Insignia, Nautica, Regatta, Sirena) cost the company ~USD 100 million.

Oceania Regatta refurbishment 2016 review

The list of deckplan changes after drydock 2016 refurbishment in Vancouver (April 24 - June 6) included:

• All passenger cabins received new decors, new furnishings and luxury fabrics.
• All cabin bathrooms were upgraded with oversized showers. Owner and Vista suite bathrooms received new vanities (made of onyx and granite).
• Penthouse Suites were remodeled like on Marina-Riviera ships.
• "Horizons" bar lounge (Deck 10) received new colors and furnishings.
• All lounges were renovated with new carpeting, chairs, premium fabrics and upholstery.
• "Martinis" bar lounge (Deck 5) and Lido Pool area (Deck 9) received new furnishings.
• Ship's Spa complex (Deck 9) was remodeled with 2 new steam rooms, while locker rooms were redecorated with new custom-made tiles and mosaics.
• Terrace Cafe (buffet on Deck 9 aft) was redecorated, and Terrace Grill station was added (similar to Marina-Riviera ships).
• Grand Bar (Deck 5) received Barista coffee machines and the amenities was upgraded with complimentary illy coffees and gourmet desserts.
• New deck games (Deck 11) include Shuffleboard and 9-hole Mini-Golf putting green.

Oceania's 2016 drydock projects (ships Nautica, Insignia, Regatta) cost the company ~USD 50 million.

Take Lombard East approximately 1.5 miles and turn left on Van Ness. Turn right on Bay Street, then proceed 1 mile to the Embarcadero. Turn left on Embarcadero for Pier 35 and right on Embarcadero for Pier 27. Traveling From the South - On 280 Northbound, exit at the end of 280 Freeway at King. Continue 3 blocks on King until it turns into Embarcadero. Pier 27 and Pier 35 are approximately 2 miles ahead to the right.
